What do you need to do when you turn 65?

hen you turn 65, you have a small window of time to get on Medicare without being penalized financially. If you do not have any other health insurance in place, then you must enroll in Medicare sometime during your initial election period: 7 months total = the 3 months before your 65th birthday month through the end of the 3rd month following your 65th birthday month.

If you have health insurance from an Employer Group Health Plan (EGHP) and your employer has more than 20 employees, chances are you have credible coverage. You should definitely ask your HR department though.

When you have credible coverage, you are not required to go on Medicare.

The credible coverage you have through the EGHP will allow you to delay your Medicare start date without a penalty.

Medicare has two parts, Part A and Part B. Part A is what you pay into while working in the US. It doesn’t cost anything (to those who qualify) once enrolled in Medicare. Generally, I recommend that when you turn 65, you go ahead and enroll in Medicare Part A if you are staying on an EGHP. This helps when you retire and are required to go on Medicare. Adding Part B is pretty easy and the transition to Medicare is simpler because you already have your Medicare number.

In order to do this, you can enroll online through Social Security at www.ssa.gov. You will need to create an account first before you can enroll.

Once you create an account, all of your statements will convert to electronic statements.

ike most people, you may have several financial goals. But can you reach them all?

It would be simple if you had great wealth. But you’ll likely need to rank your goals in terms of their importance to your life and then follow appropriate strategies to achieve them. By doing so, you may end up getting pretty close to covering each of your objectives, in one way or another.

When prioritizing your goals, consider following this process: · Identify goals as “must have” or “nice to have.” Making sure you don’t outlive your resources is a must-have goal, so you need to be as certain as possible of achieving it. On the other hand, a nice-to-have goal might be something like buying a vacation home. If you don’t attain the money needed for this goal, you do have room to compromise, perhaps by scaling down to a smaller home in a different area or just renting a place for a few weeks a year.

Having this flexibility can provide a psychological benefit, too. Since this goal doesn’t have an either-or outcome, you won’t have to feel that you failed if you don’t get the big vacation home – instead, you can still enjoy the results of your investment efforts, even at a more modest scale. · Put “price tags” on your goals. You need to know what your goals will cost.

Even if you can only make an estimate, it’s essential to have some figure in mind. As time goes by, you can always revise your projected costs. To arrive at these price tags, you may want to work with a financial professional who has the tools and technology to create hypothetical illustrations and scenarios. · Follow an appropriate strategy. The nature of your goals and their estimated cost will drive your investment strategy. So, for example, using the must-have goal mentioned above – the need to avoid outliving your money – you’ll want to balance your growth objectives with your comfort with risk, as well as maintain an appropriate withdrawal strategy when you’re retired. However, for a nice-to-have goal, such as your large vacation home, perhaps you don’t need the same urgency – consequently, with part of your portfolio, you might be able to take more risk in hopes of greater returns. And if you fall short, you can always go with Plan B – i.e., the smaller home or the rental experience.

But if your “nice to have” is closer to a “must have” in this area as well, you might want to focus less on achieving greater returns and instead look at ways of adjusting your budget to save more.

If you think you’re not making enough progress toward your desired goal, you may need to make adjustments. hether you believe we are post-pandemic or not, there isn’t any doubt that it’s still impacting the housing market. We are still deep in a seller’s market where it’s not uncommon for a seller to receive multiple offers over the list price as soon as it’s listed. Existing home inventory is low, mortgage rates are fluctuating a bit, but still staying in historic low range, and though new builds are happening, both labor and supply shortages are proving to be obstacles slowing things down a bit.

So, is it really necessary to spend money and effort on home improvements before selling if houses are going so quickly anyway? Well, unfortunately there’s no really simple way to answer that in the current, and somewhat unprecedented, residential real estate landscape. In this current market situation, there are many factors to take into consideration before answering this question, and it truly is a decision that should be discussed with your realtor to make sure you are making the best decision possible for your home and situation.

That said, there are a few things you can, and definitely should do, that don’t involve additional investment.

Seek Perfection of Character Offered by: Colorado Karate Club

A

t our Karate school, just as with most Traditional Karate dojos, students recite the Dojo-Kun, or “rules of the training hall,” at the end of class. The Dojo Kun begins with the phrase “Seek Perfection of Character.”

So this past week I asked our newer students what does it mean to “Seek Perfection of Character?” The discussion went as follows: Me: What does it mean to seek perfection of character?

Students: To be good, to do your best, to be kind to others.

Me: Well, those are positive things, but who knows what is Character?

Students: It’s a person… It’s who we are.

Me: Very good, you see, character are the qualities, habits, how we act, and all the little “things” that make us who we are. Now, are these character qualities, these habits, always good?

Students: No, they can be bad too.

Me: That is correct, we can have parts of our character that are good, and some that are not so good, and some that may be bad. But, can we change our character?

Students: Yes! Me: That’s right, we can always get better, and be better. But is this only for Karate?

Students: No. Me: Correct, of course we must get better at Karate, but where else can we get better?

Students: At home… At school… At the grocery store… With our friends…

Me: That’s right, we must try to improve and be a better person everywhere we go. And little by little our character, who we are will be better. That’s what it means to seek perfection of character.

Even as adults, sometimes, we forget that growth does not end when we stop getting taller, or that learning is not finished when we graduate from school. So we like to remind our students of all ages that in the martial arts, and life in general, it is like pushing a cart uphill, we are seldom sitting still, either we are moving forward, or we’re sliding back.

Therefore, having the mentality to always look for ways to do better and to be better, will keep us consistently moving forward. That’s what I wish for our students and for you.

2: Reduce Sleep Apnea, Asthma, and Snoring.

Snoring occurs more often when lying flat because, in this position, the neck puts extra weight on the windpipe causing it to close and to snore. When one’s head is lifted, gravity allows for the weight to be taken off the windpipe, reducing the snoring.

Sleep apnea and asthma are breathing problems that can also be decreased by using an adjustable bed frame to raise the head. Sleeping in a more angled position improves airflow, reducing obstructions from the nasal passages to allow for a healthier, uninterrupted sleep, caused by apnea. Oxygen, that is restricted when lying flat, will be able to flow more freely to decrease the probability of an asthma attack.

3: Reduce Acid Reflux and Heartburn and Improve Digestion.

When lying flat, stomach acids move to the esophagus which leads to the uncomfortable symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. A small inclining of the head has been shown to keep the acid in the stomach and away from the throat. This allows for healthier digestion and better sleep.

4: Arthritis and Pain Arthritis and other painful conditions can be relieved with the use of an adjustable bed frame. Stiff and aching joints can be alleviated by positioning the mattress so weight is taken off problem areas to allow for a more comfortable rest. The adjustable bed can also help with morning stiffness that results from pain issues.

5: Leg Swelling Many people suffer with swollen legs: pregnant women, people who stand all day at work, those afflicted with illness or people suffering from a hurt limb.

state planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in cookie-cutter, form driven estate plans. For example….

Mary and Bill left their son John a substantial inheritance. John had grown up, gotten married, completed college, and had a good job. Then came the accident. As John was rushing to work on a wintery morning, he lost control of his car and crashed into a school bus full of children. Many were hurt. John was sued and found negligent. The resulting claim far exceeded his auto insurance limits, and even after the insurance paid $1,000,000 to those injured, he was staring at a court judgment of more than $3,000,000. His assets would have to go to pay the amount due. John was looking at bankruptcy. Then he learned the good news.

Bill and Mary had sought legal advice before their deaths. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning because their estate was worth less than the estate tax exemption. He told them to put everything in joint tenancy, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals.

Their primary objective was to protect John after their deaths, so Bill and Mary left their assets in trust for John, not directly to him. As a result, John was able to keep his inheritance. While they never thought this would happen to their son, their foresight was now going to pay off.

Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Clearly it was.

Our Summer has been filled with car shows, community events and more. Andrea and I enjoyed the return of Ye Olde Auto Club’s 12th Annual Car Show where they had over 100 cars. I even took my 1954 Ford Customline to the show to join the fun. We are looking forward to Holy Rollers Charity Car Show in Broomfield on August 21st. They are expecting over 200 cars! WOW! Staying healthy and cool in the heat of summer can be a challenge!

Sleeping properly in summer is one of the most difficult adjustments for us to make, here are some great options backed by PhD sleep expert Dr. Matthew Walker.

• Keep your bedroom as cool as you possibly can at night. The body must cool to settle into REM sleep so the fewer blankets the better. Also, as odd as it sounds, a hot bath/shower right before bed can trigger your body to set its cooling systems into motion at just the right time for a healthy 8 hours of rest!

• Avoid large meals or heavy drinks before bed.

• Lastly, and this may be a hard one for some of you, try to avoid electronic light in the hours before you want to catch Z’s. The dimmer the lights on both your phone and in your bedroom, the easier it is for your body to wind down. (Look for the blue light filter setting on your phone!)

Relax the body and mind before bed. Ten minutes of mindful relaxation or “meditation” before bed has been proven to drastically improve quality of sleep and dreams to boot! If you’re like me, you might find these tips helpful!

1) Lay in a comfortable position. Relax your eyes. (Open or closed is fine) 2) Inhale and as you release your breath, let both your feet relax their tension.

3) Inhale again and as you exhale, let your ankles and calves relax their tension.

4) Work your way up the entire body until you reach the top of your head. By the time you reach your face, you will likely feel a comfy buzz all over!

5) The process can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. It’s up to you. Don’t forget it always helps to smile!

Preparing for School and Sports

his coming school year many children and teens are excited for a return to in person learning and playing their favorite sports. Many schools and sports teams require an up to date physical or annual wellness exam. Wellness exams include routine vaccines, continued growth monitoring, evaluation for participation in sports and routine screenings such as development, hearing, vision, and mental health screenings.

Schedule sports physicals early for student athletes to avoid the last-minute rush and ensure they are ready to play when the season begins. Kindergarteners and 6th graders are often due for routine vaccines to keep them up to date. In addition to routine vaccines, students 12 and older are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. Annual physicals are a perfect opportunity to discuss the vaccine with your student’s primary care provider. Physicals also allow students who need medications at school to get refills and updated paperwork for school.

It would also be helpful if this young person is trained to handle choking in small children, and basic first aid, and will not engage in problem behaviors like allowing friends over, looking through drawers or closets, or getting distracted by talking on the phone or texting. To say the least, it’s an impressive list. And one that should be applied to any teen who wishes to be a sitter. Fortunately there are such young adults, so if you have teenagers, talk with your 12-14 year old about babysitting. 12-14 years is the minimum age range recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for babysitting toddlers and young kids.

Emergencies can arise in any home, and grade school age kids should not have to manage them, only experienced older teens should be entrusted with the care of infants. If your older teen is just such a responsible individual, babysitting can be an excellent first job experience and gives real world experience in the responsibility of parenthood. And finally, if you grew up changing diapers and feeding your baby sibling, now you can use your life skills to fund your car or cell phone! Maturity beckons!

Does Hearing Loss Cause Alzheimer’s Disease?

S

ince starting to work in the hearing industry 14 years ago many things have changed in terms of technology used to treat hearing loss. Most of the advancements we use today were in their infancy or unheard of a decade and a half ago. During that time, we also gained greater knowledge and understanding of the negative consequences that occur when hearing loss goes untreated.

Almost everyone knows someone who suffers from dementia. Those who care for a family member with dementia have stories of situations ranging from humorous to humiliating to heartbreaking.

Dementia robs individuals of their mental capacity to perform everyday tasks and for some, eventually takes their life.

Dementia and hearing loss typically effect the lives of people in the same age ranges. Because of this, many of our patients and their family members ask something along the lines of, “Does hearing loss cause Alzheimer’s Disease?” This question comes as a result of the relationships that do in fact exist between Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, and hearing loss. The short answer is definitively “no, hearing loss does not cause Alzheimer’s Disease.” So what IS the connection?

Before answering that question, it is important to understand that we hear with our brain. The ear and auditory system is a system designed to get sound energy into the brain where it is processed and interpreted. The auditory system, including the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear, auditory

nerve and brain must all work correctly for hearing to take place.

Dementia is a syndrome that occurs when something causes the brain to malfunction, and typically shrink, and has multiple different causes.

Dementia may be caused by everything from a stroke to traumatic brain injury. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease.

Individuals with Alzheimer’s may experience a loss of matter in the region of the brain responsible for hearing and processing sound. When this occurs, the individual will experience hearing loss.

However, when a person has hearing loss, it does not, cannot, and will not ever cause Alzheimer’s disease.

On the other hand, hearing loss is strongly correlated with a greater risk of developing dementia.

When the area of the brain that receives and processes sound energy receives less due to temporary or permanent hearing loss, that area will typically shrink. The more severe the hearing loss, the higher the likelihood an individual will experience brain shrinkage and cognitive decline and thus, dementia.

So the connection is that both Alzheimer’s disease and hearing loss contribute to dementia, but hearing loss does not cause Alzheimer’s.

Fortunately, research shows that when individuals receive treatment for hearing loss, brain shrinkage and cognitive decline slow. The best way to treat hearing loss is to constantly wear hearing aids that are custom programmed for the specific hearing deficit the person is experiencing.

Brighton residents encouraged to take new community survey Offered by: City of Brighton Communications

T

he City of Brighton is launching The National Community Survey (NCS) through Polco NRC (National Research Center) to get resident input on a wide range of community issues, from crime and safety and employment opportunities to overall quality of life. Residents are encouraged to take the community survey to help provide feedback to plan for Brighton’s future. Starting in July, 2,700 households began receiving surveys in the mail asking them to participate, and their responses will be weighted and analyzed for the survey results. Following the return of the mailed surveys, an online version of the same survey will be available for the rest of the community to complete in August. More information will be sent out on the online survey when it becomes open.

Residents will be asked to provide their zip code to confirm where they live (this allows the City to be sure of no duplicate participants and to see which general area of the city respondents live in). Responses will remain anonymous and personal information will be securely stored on Polco.

Once results are in, they will be analyzed by Polco NRC and then presented to City Council. Public feedback from the survey will help Council and City staff to identify areas needing improvement, and ultimately, impact

decision-making for City projects and initiatives.

“This survey is a great way to get a pulse of the community,” said Jane Bais DiSessa, Brighton City Manager. “It’s important we do this every couple of years to help align the priorities of Council and City staff with that of the community. We are looking forward to seeing the results from this survey.”

This is the second time the City of Brighton has worked with NRC to conduct a community survey, the last time being in 2014. NRC and Polco have since merged. Polco NRC has worked with 500-plus cities across the United States, including many in Colorado like Commerce City, Broomfield and Westminster, which help to serve as benchmark cities to Brighton. The National Community Survey, in partnership with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), is currently the gold standard in community assessments. This benchmarking survey will provide a comprehensive and accurate picture of livability and resident perspectives about local government services, policies and management.

he Richard Lambert Foundation Charity Golf Classic, a fundraiser presented by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Innovative Real Estate, raises donations to provide free support programs and services to children and adults. This year, the tournament collected $52,343 that will go toward the Grief Center’s services providing support, education, and resources to the bereaved on coping with and navigating through the emotions experienced after the loss of a loved one.

This sold-out tournament hosted close to 150 players at the Todd Creek Golf Course in Thornton, Colorado. Innovative Real Estate’s very own Tabatha Ratliff was awarded the Women’s Longest Drive, while Scott Johnson won the putting contest.

“Funding from this event will provide nearly 600 sessions to children and adults who are learning to live without their loved ones physical presence,” said Susan Chavez, founder and executive director of the Richard Lambert Foundation. “There is no timeline on grief. This support allows individuals to not have to carry their pain alone or silently.”
