ow that some vestiges of Spring have become more regular attendees in our daily activities, it seems like our positive spirits are beginning to bloom with them. I always feel like there’s so much to celebrate in the month of April!

The coming of Spring, Easter, and my birthday…just to name a few!

To go further into this thinking, one only has to look at the global unrest, millions of people becoming refugees by the day, and needless death tolls mounting at the same time.

We have many, many things for which to be grateful.

I woke up thinking about how I’d fill my grandchildren’s Easter baskets and saw a parallel with how we fill our thoughts every day. Do we stop to show gratitude for all that we have in our lives? Our advantages are many and opportunities abundant with the right mindset. How truly blessed we are!

I

was reading an article the other day that reminded me of the year that my son went through 5+ pairs of glasses. My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was in elementary school and one of the struggles that he had was to constantly push his glasses back up his nose. He did this so forcefully and so often that his glasses would break. I would call the optometrist and tell them, “the glasses broke at the nose crook again”, and because it was within the same year, most were covered under warranty.

Whew! But we did have to pay for a few replacements and we had many discussions that went something like, “can you stop pushing on your glasses so hard?” As well as “just stop breaking them!”

This was 4th grade year, and it was tough. On top of the glasses were the coats left on the playground, in the cafeteria, at a friend’s house, basically anywhere we went. It’s hard to remember when you are in 4th grade and have more important things on your mind, like making it to the next level on your game. My son was capable of good grades because he could read well but his distractibility level was high and he would talk incessantly, which caused many problems in the classroom.

honor of National Look Alike Day (April 20th), I wanted to create an article giving awareness to Medicare Look Alikes.

There are many different categories for this topic and I’d like to focus on one that truly stands out to me in my world as an insurance agent who cares about her clients.

The first Look Alike is the telemarketing Medicare Insurance Agent.

This is a person who cold calls you from anywhere in the world. This person will offer any number of scary, threatening scenarios to entice you to buy an insurance policy from him/her. The person may be offering a completely valid product, but they are not generally taking a full, holistic approach to YOUR needs. He/She is mainly looking for what is best for his/her needs - commission.

Yes, as insurance agents we get paid a commission whenever we write an insurance policy. Call center agents are looking for numbers. They want to sell as many policies as they can.

A good local insurance agent will be your representative. He/She will not only care about making money, he/she will also care about what policy will fit your needs the best and serve you the best. You will not pay any more for a policy you get from a local agent versus one you get over the phone.

Also, beware of the creative commercials that you’ll see with a celebrity who may be someone you have looked up to for years. This person probably doesn’t know much about what they are saying. Again, they are being paid to be a spokesperson. The plan they refer to may be great for you, but it’s important to know all your options and understand what you are enrolling in.

This year there are a few changes to know about: • The child tax credit has increased from $2,000 to $3,000/kids ages 6-17 and $3,600/kids 5 & under. Any Advance Child Tax Credit payments will be reported to you on Letter 6419 from the IRS. • Individuals who received the 3rd Economic impact Payment will receive Letter 6475 from the IRS stating the amount received.

• A Charitable Contribution deduction is available to those who don’t itemize.

The amount is $300 for single filers and up to $600 for joint filers.

• Taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit will have delayed refunds. The IRS holds the refunds until mid-February to protect against identity theft & refund fraud.

• The due date this year is Monday April 18th, 2022. (For those affected by the recent wildfires the due date has been extended to May 16th, 2022.)

So, This is What a Paradigm Shift Looks and Feels Like Offered by: Jan Hepp-Struck, Hepp Realty

It’s hard to believe that we are officially entering year three of a scenario which most of us hadn’t even considered possible two years ago, but that is our reality. Mid-March of 2020—the week that “COVID” and “pandemic” became part of our daily vocabulary and the world as we had come to know it came to a screeching halt.

Suddenly our daily lives were actually occurring in our homes, and we realized that our homes, as they were, didn’t support that reality, or at least not well anyway. “Toddler or pet Zoom bombing” became a common thing and open floor plans became a hindrance, not a benefit. Bedrooms became office or classroom space; closets were overhauled into office alcoves that could disappear at the end of the workday simply by shutting a door. Remote learning and telecommuting, like it or not, became the reality by necessity. So many of us started re-evaluating our priorities and making changes to fit our homes around our new lives—we adapted and moved forward.

Even as things open back up again, many have come to embrace a lot of those changed priorities and adaptations. For many businesses, the question of remote workforce feasibility has been answered, and the momentum of that shift will continue forward. Those who didn’t adapt homes to embrace that notion are now jumping on the bandwagon, or, in some cases, making a more drastic change and relocating to a new somewhere that better suits their life goals because the locational ties to a physical office are gone.

The only thing we can be sure of is that “normal” has lost its predictability and windows of opportunity are opening everywhere we look. If you ever wondered what a societal paradigm shift might look or feel like, this is it. We/ you are living through one.

And if you skip this step, you could face an unpleasant surprise when it’s tax-filing time, because Social Security benefits can indeed add to your taxable income.Here are the details: • If you’re a single filer…If your “combined” income is between $25,000 and $34,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your Social Security benefits. (“Combined” income includes your adjusted gross income, non-taxable interest, and one-half of your annual Social Security benefits.) If your combined income is more than $34,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable.

• If you’re married and file jointly…If you and your spouse have a combined income between $32,000 and $44,000, you may be taxed on up to 50 percent of your benefits. If your combined income is more than $44,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable.

These numbers might seem high, but they don’t mean you’ll lose 50 percent, or 85 percent, of your benefits – they are just the percentages of benefits you may be taxed on, at your personal income tax rate.

To help avoid a big tax bill or an underpayment penalty, you can file Form W-4V with the Social Security Administration and request to have 7, 10, 12 or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. Your tax advisor can help you choose the withholding percentage that’s appropriate for your situation.

The amount of taxes you may need to pay will also depend on when you start taking Social Security. The earlier you take benefits, the smaller your monthly checks, and the smaller the taxes. But taxes should not be a key issue in deciding when you need to begin collecting your payments.

Rather, you should consider other factors, such as your anticipated life expectancy, your employment situation, your spending needs and the benefits for your spouse.

Here’s something else to keep in mind: Because Social Security taxes are based on your overall income, as described above, the amount of money you withdraw during retirement, and where that money comes from, can also affect your tax situation. For example, withdrawals from a traditional IRA are taxable and will increase your adjusted gross income, but withdrawals from a Roth IRA will be tax-free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you’re over 59 -1/2, so this money won’t enter into your taxable income calculations and it won’t increase the tax you owe on your Social Security benefits. Similarly, withdrawals from health savings accounts (HSAs) used for qualified health expenses also won’t count toward your taxable income.

By knowing exactly what to expect from Social Security, including the tax effects, you can more effectively incorporate your benefits into your overall retirement income planning – and the better your plans, the more you’ll be able to enjoy your life as a retiree.

That’s what my teenage daughter complained to me many years ago as I was telling her what I wanted her to do. I don’t remember what the conversation was about, but those words stuck in my mind. Hearing that made me think: “Am I not a good listener already?”, “Should I be even listening to my child, when I -as I figured- already know what is best?”

It was not that day or the next, not even that week or month, but over time, I came to realize that, just like my daughter had accurately noted, I was not a good listener; not with my children, and not even half the time with other people.

Something had to change.

Most of us believe we are great listeners already, but as I shared with my Karate students, listening, just like speaking, is a skill that must be learned, developed, and perfected.

Reading through the book “The Lost Art of Listening” by Michael P. Nichols, PHD. I came to learn many valuable techniques and concepts about listening, the central one being that listening is to make a sincere effort to understand what the other person is thinking and feeling. To be a witness to their experiences and to truly care. I never thought of it before, but active listening does take a lot of work, and practicing it is essential to get better at it.

In a world where conflict seems to spark just about everywhere: at home, at the store, at work, on social media, and even worse between countries, understanding the thoughts and motivations of our counterparts is the first and most important step in mutual cooperation and peaceful coexistence.

While I would like to report that I am now a great listener, I must admit that I am still a work in progress, probably a green-belt (in Karate terms). At least, I realize now, that there is a great need in each one of us to be heard, so I try my best. Now think about those around you who often choose YOU to be a witness to their life experiences, your child, your spouse, a customer, or even a stranger. You have the opportunity to hear them out and when they are done sharing, they may say, “I am glad I talked to you, you get me”. That’s what I wish for you and for myself.

She placed them in her safe deposit box. When her children came to Christmas dinner, she proudly told them that she had met with a lawyer and her estate is “All Taken Care Of”.

Mary took a critical step towards having an estate plan that would help things go more smoothly on her death. However she, like many people, led her kids to believe that because she had some documents upon her death there would be nothing else to do.

Look at it from the perspective of the children. They took their mom at her word, that it’s “All Taken Care Of”, and unfortunately assumed that there was nothing to do upon her death. This is a critical mistake many families make. The reality is that there is a lot to do when a person dies. There are no magic documents that miraculously take care of things.

Someone has to do something at the time of your death, and it’s usually family members.

Most family members don’t know what to do, how to do it, or understand how they should pay for the assistance they need. There is a 100% chance you’re going to die. And, there is a 100% chance that someone will need to do something after your death. If things are going to go smoothly and effectively after your death, you must take steps to prepare your family. Prepare them to know what to do, how to do it, and how to pay for it.

Remember, estate planning is a process of preparation prior to your death. It is not getting a certain type of document. By taking the time to prepare, you can assure that the process will go more smoothly for your family.

he Marshall Fires that ravaged through the neighborhoods of Superior, Louisville and Boulder County in December left 1,084 families without a home and caused more than $513 million dollars in damages. In the aftermath, many homeowners found themselves grossly underinsured to rebuild their home.

Some even found out that their homes were not up to code at the time of the fires, and now that the homes need to be rebuilt, they will need to be compliant with the current building codes, which can be tens of thousands of dollars.

How can you make sure you are fully covered? If you haven’t reviewed your insurance policy with your insurance agency in a while, that would be a good place to start. You’ll want to make sure the replacement cost has kept up with not only the rising value of homes in today’s real estate market, but that it is also commensurate with the increased cost of building materials and labor. You’ll want to make adjustments to the dwelling coverage as needed. If you’ve recently finished a basement, did you remember to tell your insurance agent? If not, this could leave you out of pocket several thousands of dollars for not updating the policy.

Check with your insurance agency to see if you have building codes coverage.

If you don’t, look into the nominal cost for adding it to the policy.

Lastly, make an inventory of your personal property. Without a home inventory, it can be hard to remember everything you have in your home. Make a checklist, take photos of valuables, make a video recording and/or use a smartphone app.

You’ll need to include the type of item, the original price, the year it was purchased and serial numbers or other identifying factors. pringtime brings beautiful blooming flowers, green leafy trees and with that comes allergy season. Seasonal allergies are often seen in the springtime due to the increase of pollen and time spent outdoors. Seasonal allergies can cause symptoms that are similar to cold symptoms, including congestion, runny nose, sneezing, red, itchy, or watery eyes and a scratchy throat. Allergies should not cause fevers, body aches or fatigue.

There are many things you can do to help decrease allergy symptoms. Washing your hands and face or showering after being outside can decrease pollen on the skin. Avoiding wearing shoes inside the house to minimize tracking allergens through the house. Making sure the filters in your home’s air and heating systems are being changed regularly can also be beneficial. Additionally, there are some medications that can help alleviate allergy symptoms.

If you think your child may be experiencing seasonal allergies reach out to their primary care provider. Allergy symptoms can easily be confused with cold and virus symptoms, so their primary care provider can help determine if your child’s symptoms are due to allergies and what will best help alleviate their symptoms.

- Limit screen time before bed. Blue light from screens or even nightlights can cause the brain to think that it’s daytime. Kids should not use or look at screens for at least an hour before bedtime. Have your teens charge their phones outside of their bedroom to avoid the temptation of using them.

- Get enough exercise during the day, especially if it involves spending time outside and being exposed to natural sunlight. But don’t do strenuous physical activity close to bedtime, as this can make it hard to relax.

- Try adding in some soothing and relaxing activities in the evenings, such as a warm bath, reading a book, meditation, quiet music, or writing in a journal. Whatever you choose, it is helpful to have a set nighttime routine. This lets the body know that it’s time to unwind and go to sleep.

Our program focuses on building strong character in our young athletes and having a positive impact on the local community. Rugby is rapidly growing in popularity, especially among football families and coaches that embrace the safe tackling methods taught in Rugby. Our youth league begins with co-ed flag for kids ages 5-8 and co-ed tackle for ages 8 and up; as well as a boys high school team. While we don’t currently have a high school girls team, we’d love to have enough sign up to field a team!

xpectations, perception and reality often don’t align. When I first started researching a career in the hearing healthcare field 15 years ago, I was intrigued by the opportunity to help individuals with hearing loss connect with their family, friends and the world around them. With all the millions of people who had untreated hearing loss, especially among the baby-boomer generation, I figured it would be a great career that would allow me to help others while providing for my family. I expected people would be “knocking down my door” so I could help them hear better.

The reality I experienced when I started seeing patients was different than my expectations. It turned out most people don’t get help with their hearing loss. I was surprised to learn some people with hearing loss don’t want to hear better, while others don’t think they have a hearing problem. Some people do not realize they cannot hear well. Others know they can’t hear well, but are ashamed or embarrassed to admit it, while others just want to wait until it is “bad enough” to get help.

I understand where some of these thoughts come from.

Before I became educated in the field of hearing loss, I thought that hearing loss was simply treated by making everything louder and, like many people, equated hearing loss with complete deafness. I did not understand that in most cases, hearing loss impacts different frequencies or tones different degrees. For many people with hearing loss, they may easily hear certain sounds like the low frequencies found in a train horn, but at the same time they have lost hearing in the high frequencies, making it difficult to understand women or children with higher pitched voices. Therefore,

most people with hearing loss cannot be helped by simply making everything louder. Different sounds need to be amplified at different levels. Fortunately, today’s hearing devices have up to 24 bands that allow us to make frequency specific amplification changes.

The problem with waiting until it is “bad enough” usually means waiting so long that hearing aids are no longer effective. One critical thing to remember is that the hearing aids are designed and programmed to work with whatever is left of a person’s hearing. That includes the ears AND the brain. When a person has hearing loss that is untreated, the brain shrinks. The good news is, wearing hearing aids slows down the rate of brain shrinkage and cognitive decline. Thankfully, more people than ever are aware of the need to treat hearing loss sooner rather than later.

Some hearing aids even have a function that tracks how much auditory stimulation the brain is receiving.

As always, we recommend to protect the hearing you have by using custom earplugs or muffs when engaging in any loud activity. Also, getting a hearing test is the key first step to finding a baseline to track hearing changes over time. If you are having hearing problems, it can be as simple as earwax blocking the canal, or a sign of a much more serious problem. (When we test hearing, we diligently look for “red flags” that may indicate a more serious health problem.) And finally, individuals with hearing loss, even mild hearing loss, benefit now, and in the future by wearing hearing aids as soon as possible. Remember, wearing hearing aids is not like a crutch that leads to weakness and atrophy. Instead, wearing hearing aids is like a treadmill which helps the ear and brain stay strong and active.

Explore Brighton’s past through new History Museum exhibit opening April 1 Offered by: City of Brighton Communications

L

earn about the city’s history at the Brighton History Museum’s new exhibit “Splendid Valley and Brighton: Story of a Place” opening on Friday, April 1. The new exhibit will start with the area’s earliest inhabitants, exploring first the South Platte River Valley through successive waves of newcomers. Throughout the exhibit, visitors can see unique artifacts telling the story over time. Learn how a stopping point for stagecoaches and trains blossomed into the garden spot of the Splendid Valley. Discover how agriculture, immigrants and prosperity combined into today’s Brighton.

There are also many interactive elements in the new exhibit. Use your voice and imagination to influence the future. Children of all ages can touch historical replicas, build their own farmhouse with interlocking bricks or brush away the sands of time in our archaeology discovery table.

At the end of the exhibit, you will have a chance to hang your future vision for Brighton on a large map. Your comments will be viewed by city leaders.

To visit the new exhibit, visit the Brighton History Museum at Historic Brighton City Hall located at 22 S. 4th Avenue, Suite 206.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Starting April 1, the museum will be open Mondays (with a special focus on school-aged visitors for “Kid’s Mondays”), Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.. New expanded hours will be announced for the summer season soon.

lenty of sellers have visited online home valuation sites only to be shocked at the published value of their homes. Most sellers are pleased when the values appear higher than they expected, but many online valuations come in far lower. So, should you use these values to price your home for sale?

These sites provide greater transparency to homebuyers and sellers by making data derived from public records more accessible. They publish what you paid for your home and how much you pay in taxes. But few consumers realize that two homes right next door to each other could have vastly different values.

The property tax base resets for each home every time it’s sold. If you’ve only owned your home for five years, you are likely paying much more in property taxes than your retired neighbors who bought their home 30 years ago. Yet your home may not be “worth” more unless you’ve done some substantial updates and/or additions.

Between tax roll data and listing data, home valuation sites apply their own secret sauce, or algorithm to come up with estimates or approximate values of what homes in a given area are worth. Sometimes the results are spot on but they can also be inaccurate if they include properties not currently on the market. These homes have not been tested by the current marketplace and cannot possibly contribute to recent market values.

There’s no way to quantify subjective information such as how well the home is maintained, curb appeal, interior design, window and yard views, and neighborhood popularity. For these reasons, online valuations should be used only as one of many tools to estimate a home’s value.

Your best approach to choosing a listing price is to ask your Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices network professional for a comparative market analysis, or CMA. They can show you the most recent listing asking prices and sold comparables in your neighborhood.

If your home is estimated for far less on a home valuation site than current comparables, be prepared to argue pricing with buyers who take these numbers as gospel. If they have a real estate agent representing them, the agent can confirm the comparables you show them to help them understand the market a little better.

By the same token, don’t expect to get more for your home if home valuation sites put your home in a higher price bracket. Recent comparables tell the true story of the current market as long as buyers and sellers are using the same search parameters.

Remember, a set of comparables is only a guide to pricing your home, so you can sell your home quickly and for the most money possible in the current market.

Well-known Walk with a Doc Program Comes to Platte Valley A fun, free and safe place to get some steps, learn about health and make new friends

Walk with a Doc is an international non-profit that was started in 2005 in order to improve health through physical activity, strengthen relationships between physicians and patients, and provide access to health information and education. Healthcare providers ditch their white coats in favor of a ball cap and sneakers.

All activity levels welcome! Everyone can walk their own pace and distance.
