Letter From The Editor

Happy Easter

Brighter Outlook This Spring! Offered by: Susan Kline - The Brighton Buzz

As

I usually look back to the prior year’s letter each month for perspective, there was a very solemn tone to April 2020’s outlook. There were more questions than answers and a lot of problems to navigate. It would be an exaggeration to say that all of that dark cloud is gone, but, the sun is shining more brightly Spring 2021 with many more answers to our problems on the way!

We Offer:

Dr. John P. Schmidt, DMD General Family Dentistry

• Routine Cleanings • Same Day Crowns • Dental Implants • Tooth Extractions • Dentures • Clear Correct Braces • Customized Sports Mouthguards • 3D Imaging • Laser Dentistry

This time of year gives us hope and the feeling of rebirth as nature opens up with all its glory and provides a backdrop for us to create a bountiful Spring and Summer. That bounty can take many forms... more time outdoors for various activities: sports, gardening, home projects, family gatherings, relaxation. We can open up our minds and hearts to the things that bring us joy! It’s an exciting thought to expand our lives once again! We’ve gathered an exceptional body of resources in this April issue to assist you in your life’s expansion. Supporting local businesses helps our communities grow and begin to set the stage for a more positive and prosperous 2021. Give those advertisers that fill your needs/wants a call! They’ll be glad to make your Spring brighter!

Happy Spring!

any times, someone that hurts their back will tell me “I dropped my phone and was just picking it up off the floor!” Then I’ll ask them, “Was your phone heavier that day?” Every time you move improperly or your body isn’t ready for the activity, you can hurt the tissues. If this happens too much over time or all at once, you can damage your joints or muscles. After the recent blizzard, our Chiropractic office was full of people coming in for care as their aching backs, knees and shoulders reminded them of their lack of preparedness. Springtime is upon us and many people come out of their winter slumber to begin their warm weather activities. Are you an avid runner, cyclist, golfer, or gardener? Are there children in your house that play sports? Have COVID restrictions limited your usual activities? Prolonged sitting results in deconditioned muscles and joints. Some get short and tight while others get lengthened and weak. Th is creates an imbalance that sets you up to fail. Don’t let this happen to you. Pain is an indicator that something is wrong. Is it because something’s moving too much or because something’s not moving at all? Find out what is causing your pain or keep from getting it in the first place. Find a body worker that will do a proper evaluation and put you on a program to succeed. Brighton has many available to help you such as Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Personal Trainers and Massage Therapists. Please call me if there is anything I can do for you. Thank you and enjoy the sunshine!

How Important is Oral Health Care to your Overall Health?

Visit our website www.theporchshop.com

Offered by: Jennifer Bell - Bell Benefits, LLC

Check out our NEW website

As early as 2600 B.C. oral care has taken

note as something of great importance. That’s right! The early Egyptians show signs of having oral health specialists. But it wasn’t until the 1700s that maintaining good oral health care became much easier. Since then, many medical practitioners have noted strong connections between good oral health and overall health. Referencing an article by The Mayo Clinic, you can get clues about your overall health by looking at your oral health. Your mouth has bacteria -mostly harmless. But keep in mind your mouth is the entry point to your digestive & respiratory tracts. Some of this bacteria can cause disease. Since problems in our mouth can affect the rest of our body, it would seem important to not only do your daily brushing and flossing exercises but also maintain a healthy relationship with your dentist. Many people will avoid the dentist if they do not have dental insurance. There is a fear of extraordinary costs tied to oral care. Without any protection in place, the outcomes can be quite frightening. There are various solutions for solving this issue: traditional dental insurance, discount dental programs, and plans encapsulated inside a Medicare Advantage Plan. Each offers its own specifications for coverage. If you have any questions about the different types of coverage, I have been studying this topic quite heavily over the past few months and would be more than happy to help you. I am just a phone call away, 720-626-6524. Bee a part of The Buzz next month! To advertise, call:

The Value of Performance Training Offered by: Bryan Giger, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Coach

Every sport is dominated by athletes who can sprint, jump, and change direction faster than their opponents. Every collegiate and professional athlete prioritizes their off-season programs which requires a structured plan that improves strength, speed, and agility. It is also extremely important to stay healthy throughout a grueling season with nutrition and injury prevention. A performance coach can assist an athlete with all their needs. As an athlete, it is important to create good habits at an early age. Many players complete their athletic careers without understanding how to move efficiently. They also lack the strength necessary to compete at a high level. A performance coach can assist with each of these qualities and ensure the athlete is ready to compete. Whether you are a middle school athlete preparing for high school sports, or a high school athlete preparing to play at the collegiate level, performance coaching can assist in accomplishing those goals. Significant strength, power, speed, and agility improvements will be made with a performance coach. The fear of injury is always a concern for athletes and if they would miss a portion or even the entirety of their season. Time missed on the field can be a significant loss, whether that athlete is trying to maintain their playing time or move up on the depth chart. Athletic performance training can assist with injury reduction and improve athleticism simultaneously.

Time for Some Financial Spring Cleaning Offered by: Tim Roberts - Edward Jones

Spring is officially here – and for many of us, that means it’s time for some spring cleaning around our homes and yards. But why stop there? This year, why not do some financial spring cleaning, too? You can apply some of the same principles of traditional spring cleaning to your financial environment. Here are a few suggestions: • Clear your vision. Spring brings extra hours of sunshine – and to enjoy them, you’ll want to clean your windows, inside and out. As an investor, you also need to take a clear-eyed view of your situation periodically. Are you on track toward achieving your goals? If not, what moves can you make to get back on the right path? You need to be honest with yourself to see if you’re doing all you can to help make progress toward your objectives. • “De-clutter” your portfolio. As you go about sprucing up your house, you may find that you have a lot of clutter. Do you really need three mops? And are you holding on to those old calendars for any good reason? You’ll probably feel much better about your surroundings when you de-clutter them – and the same may be true of your investment portfolio. For example, do you own several investments that are virtually identical? If so, you might want to consider ways to help diversify your holdings. While diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against losses in a declining market, it might help reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. • Recharge your batteries. When you do your household spring cleaning, you may want to check the batteries on your smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector and other devices. And as part of your financial spring cleaning, you might need to recharge your own investment “batteries,” so to speak. In other words, increase the power you’re providing to your portfolio. You can do this in a few different ways. First, you can increase your contributions to your 401(k) or similar retirement plan every time your salary goes up. You can also try to “max out” on your IRA contributions each year. (For 2020, you can put in up to $6,000 in an IRA, or $7,000 if you’re age 50 or older). Another way to increase your investment voltage is to make sure you’ve got adequate growth potential in your portfolio based on your goals and risk tolerance. • Put your house in order. As part of your spring cleanup, you may want to check for damage on your roof, windows, siding and so on. But you also need to put your financial house in order, especially as it regards to protection. Do you have adequate life insurance? If not, your family could suffer if something were to happen to you. And have you thought about how you could pay for long-term care if you needed it? The average annual cost for a private room in a nursing home is about $100,000, according to the insurance company Genworth. To retain your financial independence – and also to help protect your grown children from possibly having to deal with these costs – you may want to explore some type of long-term care insurance. By doing some spring cleaning around your home, you’ll lighten up your living space. And doing some financial spring cleaning may help you brighten your future. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Jones & Co., L.P. and in California, New Mexico and Massachusetts through Edward Jones Insurance Agency of California, L.L.C.; Edward Jones Insurance Agency of New Mexico, L.L.C.; and Edward Jones Insurance Agency of Massachusetts, L.L.C.

The Heart of Home

ng 40+ Years of Setting Extraordina ry Celebrati s Through World Class Customer Servic Standard e

Offered by: Jan Hepp-Struck, Hepp Realty

T

he kitchen has always been at the very heart of home. It’s where people naturally tend to congregate for family time, holidays and celebrations, craft and homework projects, and for some over the past year, it’s also become the office and/or the classroom. If anything, the past year has heightened the focus on the importance of functionality and appearance of the kitchen as many of us have, out of necessity, also become self-proclaimed foodies and enthusiastic (or not so enthusiastic) home cooks. There’s no denying that it’s a seller’s market right now, but it doesn’t hurt to keep these kitchen design trends in mind if you want to get maximum wow factor and return on investment for your home improvement project dollars when you’re ready to sell. • While design trends are shifting to more defined spaces throughout the rest of the house, open L-shaped kitchens with larger multi-functional islands and seating are a definite yes. • More durable surfaces that hold up to a variety of uses—think quartz rather than granite countertops. • Recessed ceiling lighting, and under counter lighting • Handleless cabinetry • Smart technology • Premium touches like built-in sophisticated wine fridges and filtered waterspouts • Ultra-quiet dishwasher upgrades • Contrasting color palette with a dark accent and lighter neutral or griege backdrop complemented by matte and brushed finishes. • Statement sinks and different shaped tiles that have a visual impact • Induction cooktops—they are more energy-efficient and easier to clean than gas and electric.

I Quit Offered by: Willy Strohmeier Colorado Karate Club

I

was about ten years old and had been doing Karate for a few years getting to my green belt. But by now, the sparkle of training had been wearing off. I mean, there’s a lot of repetition, a lot of practicing, and I was bored. I wanted to quit. My dojo was a couple of blocks from my house, so after school my two older brothers and I would get ready by ourselves and go train. My oldest brother was always motivated to go; my second older brother was more like me, so one day him and I decided to stay home and watch the Flintstones rather than go to class. When my dad got home and found us watching TV, he was not amused and applied some foot to rear medicine to us both. My father was very loving, but he was also very strict. When he enrolled us in Karate he told us that we would at least earn our black belt. Quitting was out of the question. So there I went to the dojo each time, grumbling and kicking rocks. But after a while I caught the love of it again and didn’t need to be dragged anymore. As we got older, my brothers and I excelled at Karate, we integrated the Peruvian National team, and traveled the world to many international competitions. Today, Karate is my love, my passion, and my career (after I left Software Engineering to follow my dream). And to think that none of this would have been possible if it had not been for my father putting his foot down (or up, you could say), and laying down the law for me when I was too immature to see things through. Often I hear parents say: “I will not force my child to do anything he/she doesn’t want to do”. But my father said: “I know what is best for my child, and I will have him do what is best for him, even if he doesn’t like it. He will thank me later”. And that has made all the difference in the world for me and my children, as I have also followed my father’s philosophy. Whether it is Karate, College, work, or anything else, too many times, we find it easier to simply quit. Throw in the towel. When things get tough, we quit. I get bored, I quit. Things don’t go as I expected, I quit. Quitting becomes a habit, a way of life, and sadly, if we lack the parent, friend, coach, or teacher to push us to persevere, we leave many things half done. I wonder what achievements are never accomplished, what discoveries are left hidden, what potentials never realized, simply because we quit when the chips were down. As a child, I lacked discipline, but my father was there to supplement my deficiency. He pushed me until I did not need him to do so anymore. My father left us too soon at the age of 59 and I miss him dearly. He showed me some tough, but real love, and for that I am forever grateful.

Retiring at 65 and plan to take Medicare? Turning 65 and on SS? 65 and still working with group health care? Only have original Medicare? Have an HSA? Have you been on disability and soon to receive Medicare?

Each avenue will require unique steps that must happen in sequence to get the coverage you desire in place. You can avoid any pitfalls, missed deadlines or penalties. Put your mind at ease by making an introductory call to ask for direction. Did you decide on your Medicare path a while back? My experience is that many seniors were glad to get through the process and unfortunately, they avoid revisiting their choices. Plans and rates can change over time and your needs also may have evolved. Like many other insurance coverages, it is best to understand your benefits, and options. I can assist in a review of your coverage, let’s talk. If you are on the best plan for you, I will confirm your choice! I encourage you to reach out, I’m available weekly for Medicare Q & A on Tuesdays at 5:00. Catch my Medicare 101 class on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at both 2 and 6 p.m. Mark your calendar for April 20 or May 18. Call or email for Zoom meeting information. Protect Your Family! Offered by: Dolan & Associates, P.C.

Who You’re Going To Call (Part 1 of 6)

E

state planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your family. For example…. Mary had been through so much with Bill’s illness. After almost a year, it had taken him from her. Then came the accident. As Mary turned off the highway she was struck by a young driver. His serious injury seemed to be entirely his own fault, until a lawsuit convinced a jury that Mary’s turn signals were not working properly, shifting legal liability to her. The resulting claim far exceeded her auto insurance limits, and even after the insurance paid $1,000,000 to the injured driver, she was staring at a court judgment of more than $800,000. Her lawyer told her their savings and Bill’s life insurance proceeds were going to be wiped out, and a lien would be placed on the family home. Mary was looking at bankruptcy. Then she learned the good news. Bill and Mary had sought legal advice when they first learned of his illness. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning. He told them to just “put everything in joint tenancy.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Bill’s primary objective was to protect Mary when he died. As Mary was winding up Bill’s affairs, she realized that upon his death, their savings, his life insurance and the home would not come directly to her in her own name, but would be put in trust. Mary would control the trust, but it would protect the assets from legal claims. While he had no idea what claims might arise, Bill’s foresight was now going to really pay off. If you would like to learn more about an estate planning process that is producing great results for families, visit www.EstatePlansThatWork.com to sign up for a complementary educational workshop.

Busy, busy – we hosted, donated, and volunteered Offered by: Melissa Rippy - Rippy Insurance Agency / Allstate

March was a busy month at the Rippy Agency. We co-hosted a blood drive on my dad’s heavenly birthday, which was March 22nd. We had 20 units of blood donated that will be used to save up to 60 lives. We could not have accomplished the success of our drive without our donors and co-sponsors, Vitalant Blood Donation, Safelite Auto Glass and ServPro of Greater Boulder. Thanks to all of you, we have scheduled two more blood drives for later this year and would love if you could join us on July 19th and again on October 11th. The Bloodmobile will be parked outside of the Rippy Agency from 10-4 and we will have registration available to secure your spot soon. On March 24th, I joined Let Your Light Shine to put together food boxes for members of our community that are experiencing food insecurity. Growing up, my own family was on the receiving end of a food pantry box after my dad, who was a carpenter, fell off a roof and broke his hip, leaving him unable to work for a period of time and five mouths to feed. As an ode to my dad, the Rippy Agency sponsored 78 families with boxes of food that will provide 3-5 days of meals. Let Your Light Shine is a small volunteer run 501©3 non-profit focused on mobile homeless outreach in Adams County. They help to provide resources for those in need and fill the gaps left between shelters, food pantries and other organizations and have a mission to empower individuals and families to move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Comprehensive pediatric hospice and palliative care programs include: • Hospice care, which provides comfort, pain relief and quality-of-life care for children with a terminal diagnosis. • Palliative care, which focuses on providing children relief from the pain and stress of serious illness, regardless of the diagnosis. • Concurrent care, which ensures a family can receive both comfort and curative care for their child at the same time. • Respite care, which provides caregivers short-term relief when day-to-day care for a child with an advanced illness becomes physically and emotionally demanding. • Anticipatory grief counseling, which helps children ages 3-17 who have a loved one facing a life-limiting illness and end-of-life transition. • Counseling for families following the death of a child, which provides fellowship with others experiencing similar losses, including individual and group counseling for a full year after loss. Patients and families benefit most from the care that includes child life specialists, registered nurses, chaplains and social workers, all with extensive experience with children. Staff who work with pediatric patients in hospice and palliative care should be trained by the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium, an education initiative designed to improve palliative care.

On Face mask use

Offered by: Ellen McCormick. MD

M

ore than a year into the Covid 19 Pandemic most families have transitioned to the public health need for mask use by both parents and children when in public places. This doesn’t mean that this action is ever convenient. And it is human nature to rebel against inconvenience, I sometimes think that we humans can tolerate real physical pain more easily than we can stand inconvenience, especially a new inconvenience that is imposed long after the convenient path has become a well worn norm. The new rules immediately seem an unjust imposition and a seizure of ones personal rights. We have walked this path before. In 1955 the Ford motor company first started offering seat belts as an option in their new cars, but buyers did not want them and often requested that the dealers remove them. However, the safety data was and is overwhelming for the benefits to seatbelted passengers when auto accidents occur. Then, in 1958 Saab made seatbelts standard equipment and the rest of the auto industry soon followed suit. Americans were still resistant to seatbelts and usage was poor despite the safety concerns. By the 1980’s the first laws were passed by various states to require usage and were met with extreme resistance. The state representative in Michigan who sponsored such a measure received hate mail comparing him to Hitler. As of August 2020 New Hampshire was the only state without a law for mandatory seatbelt use by adults. The use of child restraint seats in cars was also a fraught journey despite clear evidence for the protection car seats afforded to children during automobile crashes. However, we humans worry most about the welfare of our children and the arguments and supporting data for car seats were received by concerned parents, and soon laws were changed to mandate their use, much to our childrens’ benefit. We face a very similar situation with the need to mask for control of the virus. The data are clear on mask use but implimentation by this standard most certainly threatens our convenience. If you regularly buckle your kids into car seats and require your teens to buckle up or loose driving privileges, congratulations you are being a responsible parent to the benefit of your family and your community. While you’re at it put your mask on as you leave to go shop and tell your kids to also “buckle up their lungs” for the benefit of the whole community. It isn’t convenient but how often in your whole life have you found safety to be an exercise in convenience. And that mask doesn’t hurt a bit, it’s just inconvenient. PLEASE, buckle up, and mask up. This too will pass.

Spring Into Maintaining a Healthy Weight Offered by: Kelly Fausey, CPNP- Brighton Pediatrics, P.C.

A

s nice weather is approaching and we are starting to prepare for the upcoming summer months, many families are thinking about getting a healthier lifestyle. This is especially important for the pediatric population due the rapid rise of obesity in children. By maintaining a healthy weight during childhood and adolescence it promotes good growth and development into adulthood. Healthy eating habits are a good way to start maintaining a healthy weight for your children. Start with encouraging plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat and nonfat milk/dairy products, lean meats such as fish, poultry and protein sources like lentils and beans. As a family, try to avoid sugary drinks such as soda, pops, juices, Kool-Aid, sweet tea and limit sugar and saturated fats. (CDC. gov). Instead promote plenty of water. As a family, staying active and limiting screen time is also beneficial in maintaining a healthy weight for children. By staying active, children develop bone strength, have a decrease risk for high blood pressure, stress, and anxiety, and boost their self-esteem (CDC.gov.) It is recommended that children are active at least 60 minutes per day and limit screen time (video games/tablets/phone time and TV watching) to 2 hours per day. Encourage family walks or time at the park each day with your children. In addition, getting an adequate amount of sleep helps maintain a healthy body weight for children. It is recommended that school children get at least 10-13 hours of sleep at night and teens 8-10 hours per night (CDC.gov). Enjoy the springtime with your family and working towards maintaining a healthier lifestyle of nutritional eating habits, increased activity, and plenty of sleep to promote a healthy weight for your children.

pring is the time we focus on cleaning our homes and offices, shampoo the rugs, washing the winter dirt off the windows. Why not clear the negative or stagnant energy away as well?! For space Blessing: I will bless the space with incense and/or smudge, then complete with healing waters and herbs. Anointing all doorways and windows with oil to create an energetic barrier to ill will and spirit entities. I will then imbue the space with harmonious energy. Verbal blessings or chanting may be used depending on your preferences. For space Clearing: This is not a diagnosis or paranormal investigation. This is a cleansing and clearing process, removing all negative energies and entities that do not belong in the location. I will employ a variety of techniques in this process. Depending on the size of the space and the type of energy or entity present, I may bring a team of trained associates with me. Energy Clearing will remove the following from the space: • Emotional dross • Elemental disturbances • Spirits (ghosts)

• Closing or sealing of Portals • Demonic influences/entities • Poltergeist

Feng shui options may be discussed as a way of altering the space and it’s contents to bring about a more harmonious or balanced environment.

s American’s are finding other things to spend their money on, other than houses and cars, we will start see how much of this housing inventory strain was caused by lack of supply or was it overexuberant buyers. Inflation looms, the market is beginning to balance as interest rates level out to 3-4% and rate lock will play a part in market in years to come. But with millennials entering the market and attached properties making a come back there are just as many great things happening as unfavorable for buyers. So as we wait for the next stimulus package to roll out we continue to handle sky high demand and wait for the current transformation of our markets again. There is never a sure fire way to know what’s going to happen, but with savings up and forbearance preventing foreclosures till late 2021, the housing market is looking up

Inflation is About to Go UP.. and the Fed Will Allow It… They actually have no choice. It’s a mathematical equation. Powell spoke about getting in front of increased inflation saying that “inflation is set to increase, but likely temporary. And if we see inflation rise, we will be patient.” Okay Powell, you inquisitive man you. When we look at inflation, we look at month over month and year over year. Lately there has been a steady, very muted inflation level of .2 to .3% month over month for an annual number of 1.4%. It’s been in this same range since August 2020. But remember what happened in March and April 2020. Inflation dropped -.1% in March and -.4% in April. These negative numbers will affect us this March and April in two ways. First, the annual comparison will jump up. When you compare a .3% gain to a .2% gain last year it’s muted. when you compare a .3% gain to a -.4% loss.. it’s significant. Second, when those two negative numbers become older, the “unadjusted 12 month average” inflation will jump. Remember 2nd grade math when we look at averages, we take all 12 numbers added together and divide by 12. Those deep numbers kept the average low. when they roll off, the average will jump up. The Fed is expecting the inflation number to go well above 2% temporarily. Inflation is the arch enemy of bonds! Why? Because bonds are a fixed income product. When the price of goods go up, the fixed income you are receiving goes down relative to those costs. The market takes that into account and now has to discount the price of those existing bonds. When the price is discounted (goes down), the associated yield (what we think of as rates) goes up. That’s why inflation makes for an unhappy mortgage broker. So, when is the best time to buy… Now and take advantage of the interest rates before they raise anymore. Spring Forward Natural Wellness Tips to Keep You Healthy this Season Offered by: Jessica Ahmed - Brighton Acupuncture

H

appy spring to the greater Brighton community! Although in Colorado we can often look forward to snow well into April (or May!), March 20th marks the official first day of spring. Many of us look forward to the warmth, sunshine and new growth of the season, but some of us also dread the allergies, injuries from increased physical activity, and arthritis or fibromyalgia flare-ups aggravated by the fluctuating weather. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine benefit the immune system and help alleviate the sneezing, runny nose and foggy head of allergies, as well as prevent and treat various types of pain. Here are a few other recommendations to help keep you healthy this season: Diet: In Chinese medicine the liver is associated with the spring season, so now is a good time to focus on gently cleansing through your diet. I recommend eating plenty of fresh vegetables, especially greens, as well as sour foods, such as lemon squeezed in your water. If you have allergies, try limiting dairy and wheat and notice if your symptoms improve. Movement: Warmer weather creates a great opportunity for increased physical activity. Make it fun by going outside for a walk, hike or bike ride. Stretching is especially encouraged and will help you avoid injuries. Boost your Immune System: Limit your sugar intake and focus on stressreduction. Try a daily multivitamin, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and zinc. Chinese herbs, such as Huang Qi (Astragulus) and Dong Chong Xia Cao (Cordyceps) are also helpful. Homeopathy: These gentle and effective medicines are available in most health food stores. Some common homeopathics for spring hay fever are Allium cepa, Euphrasia officianalis and Histaminum.

We accept Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs).

North American Wonders:

venture off the beaten path this summer

any of the world’s natural wonders exist practically in your backyard. If you want to have a truly unique travel adventure, you would be wise to consider a trip to a destination off of the beaten path. Regardless of the time of year that you want to visit, here are seven of the most underrated travel destinations in North America to consider for your next trip.

1 - New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is back better than ever since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Take a haunted ghost tour, explore the live music offerings on Bourbon Street, visit spectacular cathedrals, and more. It is no secret that the Crescent City loves a good party with Mardi Gras and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival leading the way. The star of New Orleans is still its food scene. From crawfish to beignets to shrimp and grits, you are going to want to leave plenty of time in your dining itinerary to explore all of the culinary delights of New Orleans.

2 - Glacier National Park, Montana

Although Glacier National Park is often overlooked in favor of the more popular Yellowstone National Park, this gem deserves consideration for your next trip. Outdoor recreational enthusiasts will appreciate the vast options, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping, fishing, and more. Visit during the off-season so you will enjoy fewer crowds and more room to roam and find your adventure.

3 - Zihuatanejo, Mexico

While most tourists flock to the popular destinations of Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas, savvy travelers love the quieter vibe of Zihuatanejo. This seaside town is located in the state of Guerrero along the Pacific Coast of Mexico. A host of stunning beaches, a lively arts scene, and welcoming people and culture make this a great place to immerse yourself in the beauty of Mexico. Spend your day fishing with locals, taking a sunset horse ride on the beach, or noshing on authentic Mexican food finished with a flight of tequila.

4 - Victoria, British Columbia

The capital city of British Columbia is in a world of its own. Many travelers come to British Columbia to see Vancouver or Whistler without taking the time to stop in

By: Staff AccuWeather Victoria. This lovely waterfront city will make you feel as if you have been transported to a European city. Popular activities include a stroll through the gorgeous Butchart Gardens, high tea at the Fairmont Empress, and getting lost in the magic of this picturesque city.

5 - Quebec City, Quebec

This quintessential French-Canadian city is truly a magical destination. The centerpiece of Quebec City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site’s 17th century Old Town. Other activities include a visit to the historic Notre Dame de la Victoire, a church built in 1642 to commemorate a battle with the British. The Chateau Frontenac is a fabulous place to sip a cocktail while taking in the sweeping views of lower St. Lawrence and the Ile d’Orleans. Although it is always a wonderful time to visit Quebec City, the area is particularly enchanting when covered under a blanket of snow in the winter.

6 - San Luis Obispo, California

There is no shortage of amazing coastal cities in California. San Luis Obispo offers visitors relaxed energy along with magnificent scenery. Because it was once a Spanish mission town, San Luis Obispo boasts a rich history partnered with colorful architecture. The city features one of the best farmer’s markets in the state, giving you the chance to sample the many fresh food offerings that call California home. The bustling downtown area features museums, local art galleries, and charming boutique stores.

7 - St. Augustine, Florida

Billing itself as the oldest city in America, St. Augustine oozes charm around every corner. The Old World ambiance is present in abundance, making you feel as if you have stepped through the doors to Spain. Historical sites to visit include the 1672 Castillo de San Marcos and the Plaza de la Constitución. Less than 10 minutes from the city center, you will find soft and sandy beaches that beckon you to come in and enjoy the water. Steeped in history, natural scenic beauty, stunning architecture, and Florida sunshine, you can’t go wrong with a visit to St. Augustine. The climates of these seven destinations are all incredibly varied and dependent on the time of year that you travel. For the best experience, be sure to stay in tune with the local forecast. This will prepare you for all of the elements.

Insurance Accepted Self Pay Discounts Offered Financing Available Independent, Multi-line Dealer

Up to $1000 Trade-in Value for a pair of Hearing Aids

Does any of this Sound Familiar? Offered by: John Wilson, B.S., BC-HIS - Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center

Individuals typically do not get hearing aids when they first become aware of their hearing loss. Most people wait about a decade to get hearing aids. While more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of treating hearing loss as soon as possible, many only act after a significant period of time. For some, the motivation to act often comes from witnessing a loved one struggle after putting off getting help. Many act after an embarrassing or dangerous situation occurs. Others finally are repeatedly pestered and chastised by family members before deciding to get help. Here are a few objections to getting hearing aids I have heard countless times over the past 13-plus years. “I don’t want to wear hearing aids, because if I do, I will become dependent on them.” If you have enough hearing loss to need amplification, you are already missing more than you realize. A very common comment I hear when a person first gets hearing aids is “I had no idea what I was missing.” When someone becomes aware of the things that are happening around them that they were oblivious to due to a lack of hearing, they realize their need for hearing help. Patients often express their annoyance at hearing sounds they may have not heard for years or decades. This can be a sign that someone has waited too long to get help and will take more time and fine tuning to get used to things. “I tried hearing aids and they just made the background noise louder.” Hearing in noise is a skill that must be developed and used, or will be lost. Many people who have had hearing loss for a significant time lose the ability to hear and understand in noise. For many that means wearing a hearing aid that has significant background noise management to help overcome that deficiency. For those with normal hearing, filtering out unwanted sounds is a normal part of everyday life and something that the brain can be very good

at. For others, the variability in hearing loss at different frequencies necessitates using hearing devices with more fine-tuning capability. A proper hearing aid fitting general requires multiple visits and time depending on the type and severity of hearing loss and how long a person waits to get help. “I tried hearing aids and I still cannot understand my spouse.” Working with patients that have been married for up to 75 years or more, I have found that hearing is only one component of healthy communication. Sometimes hearing is the problem. Sometimes other issues including ineffective communication habits play a major role. While hearing loss is a significant contributing factor too many miscommunications, other problems can arise. Once the spouse of man scheduled an appointment without telling him and simply brought him to the appointment. Neither was very happy to be in my office. After the test I explained that the was no hearing loss. When I discussed the situation with the couple it came to light that the husband simply did not pay attention and the wife never took time to verify what he thought he heard. “My hearing is not bad enough yet.” I will do something when it is bad enough. This is VERY common and one of the hardest things to watch happen. Prior to opening in Brighton, I spent almost a decade in another office. I was able to see many people and see how their hearing loss changed over time. What I saw was a fulfillment of what I had read and studied as part of my professional training. The sooner a person has their hearing loss treated, the better their longterm outcome. Treating hearing loss slows down the rate of diminished hearing and cognition that accompanies hearing loss. In my experience, even when hearing loss remains the same after a number of years, 100% of the time, individuals who waited to treat their hearing loss suffered from decreased speech recognition and ability to hear in noise.

The History of Brunch A

s is the case with many culinary traditions, the origins are a bit hazy. Some food historians think that the meal has its roots in England’s hunt breakfasts—lavish multi-course meals that featured a smorgasbord of goodies such as chicken livers, eggs, meats, bacon, fresh fruit and sweets. Others posit that Sunday brunch derives from the practice of Catholics fasting before mass and then sitting down for a large midday meal. And then there are those who look to New York’s abundance of dining spots when it comes to tracing the origins of classic brunch dishes from eggs Benedict to bagels and lox. What does seem certain is that the word “brunch”—that playful blend of “breakfast” and “lunch”—first appeared in print in an 1895 Hunter’s Weekly article. In “Brunch: A Plea,” British author Guy Beringer suggested an alternative to the heavy, post-church Sunday meals in favor of lighter fare served late in the morning. ‘’Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting,’’ Beringer says. ‘’It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.’’ But wherever the initial spark of genius came from, the tradition definitely seems to have caught on in the United States in the 1930s, supposedly because Hollywood stars making transcontinental train trips frequently stopped off in Chicago to enjoy a late morning meal. It was a meal championed by hotels since most restaurants were closed on Sundays and, with church attendance flagging after World War II, people were looking for a new social outlet that also let them sleep in a bit. Restaurants soon hopped on the bandwagon and began offering the decadent spreads of food and signature morning cocktails, such as Bloody Marys, Bellinis and Mimosas. orn into an entrepreneurial family, Scott Nordby learned early on the importance of honesty, integrity, dedication, and loyalty, both in his role as a successful REALTOR® and in life overall. These are also the principles around which Scott and his wife, Lora, operate their firm, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Innovative Real Estate, which is why the pair is being named the recipients of RISMedia’s 2020 National Homeownership Award. Sponsored by Quicken Loans®, RISMedia’s National Homeownership Award is bestowed Scott and Lora Nordby upon members of the real estate Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices community who continuously Innovative Real Estate demonstrate extraordinary contributions toward increasing homeownership and building better communities. Pair named as recipients of RISMedia’s 2020 National Homeownership Award

Scott started out by working in his family’s construction and development business in Washington state. Lora was previously a real estate agent, working as a paralegal. They met in 1999 while Scott was teaching a class and the pair married in 2002. In 2003, the Nordby’s founded Innovative Real Estate in the Denver metro area and joined the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices franchise in 2017. Today, the firm is home to nearly 200 agents in four offices serving Colorado’s Front Range. Scott says his partnership with Lora is the “perfect combination.” “I’m always focused on driving growth and supporting agents. She’s all about creating processes and systems, and keeping everything running in the same direction,” he explains. Throughout their business success, Scott and Lora have adhered to a strong belief in faith, family, balance, and contribution. “We started Innovative Real Estate because we wanted to build a company where agents could be successful selling real estate while living amazing lives at home,” says Scott. “We focus on mindset first, skillset second, and activities third. We believe in creating win-win collaboration— with the end result always being to serve the client in the best way possible.” With this philosophy at their company’s core, it’s no surprise that Scott, Lora, and their agent peers, prioritize community involvement—whether it be volunteering with church, schools, and sports organizations, or orchestrating public focused events within the offices. “We have always believed that when you get really plugged into your community, you also get to connect with others you might have never met otherwise. We truly enjoy meeting new people while connecting with those we already know,” says Lora. “Real estate is about relationship, not sales.” Scott adds, “We believe that we live our priorities, so what we are doing in life, shows what we are dedicated to.” Over the years, Scott, Lora, and their agents have supported an array of community and charitable efforts over the years, some of which are Habitat for Humanity, Almost Home, A Precious Child, The Sunshine Kids, and Brighton Shares the Harvest. So, when it comes to sharing advice with other real estate professionals seeking to become more involved in their communities, the Nordbys’ message is simple: “Find something that speaks to you, that you are motivated by, and give it your all.” On that note: Some of our amazing Brokers in our Brighton office will be hosting a free Mother’s Day Event.
