these summer months go by, it seems as if our journeys into our new normal are progressing somewhat similarly to how we adapted to our lives changing with pandemic restrictions. Everyone is dancing to their own music! While our fears of getting a deadly disease have largely abated, the rhythm for our new normal evolution is at a variety of different speeds. Quick,quick, slow is a feeling that permeates our everyday activity pace which accommodates all of our collective journeys into normalcy.

One thing for sure, it’s a wonderful blessing we’re able to go on this journey! As many of our local businesses are more freely open, there looms a problem of hiring staff to serve the additional business. We will be adding a Now Hiring Section to the magazine to list available jobs in our area. Soon, the additional unemployment payments will end and I’m sure our distribution communities will benefit from hiring locally.

ow, another year has flown by, but it was indeed a memorable one! We are grateful that we managed to stay safe and healthy and were able to continue our high standard of service for our existing and new clients. We recently celebrated our 8th Anniversary and look forward to many more years of success and service in this great community.

The family law team has had another productive year and helped many clients navigate a variety of issues and unique challenges that many families faced during the pandemic. We are proud to report that Zack and Carla had an exceptional year. Maintaining client relationships, attending mediation and trying cases over a computer comes with its own challenges and Zack and Carla rose to the occasion-not only did Zack litigate more cases than he would in a typical year, he and Carla were unbelievably successful. We are so proud of the work they do! This year Katie was once again selected as a Top 100 Family Lawyer in the State of Colorado from the American Society of Legal Advocates and was acknowledged as providing exceptional and outstanding client service by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys. She was also recognized as a Thomson Reuters Super Lawyer for 2020. With the hard work and support of her fantastic paralegal, Cindy, Katie maintains an excellent 10 out of 10 AVVO ratingan accomplishment she is very proud of.

The elder law team was busier than ever, partly due to the devastating

realties of COVID-19. The pandemic also got a lot of people thinking about their estate plans (or lack thereof), and Casey and her team have been happy to help many families get their Wills, powers of attorney, and health care documents in place and provide at least a little peace of mind during these uncertain times. While we want people to do their estate planning regardless of a pandemic, this time is a good reminder for all of us to try to get our “ducks in a row” to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Casey was voted “Best in Brighton” and “Best in Aurora” for her probate and estate planning work over the last year, and was very honored to receive the recognition.

Casey and Katie have both continued their community service efforts over the last year.

Casey continues to serve on the Co-Chairperson for Senior Law Day, serve on the Colorado Supreme Court Probate Rules Committee, and as the Co-Chair for the Adams and Broomfield Bar Association’s probate section.

Katie continues to provide pro bono legal services through Metro Volunteer Lawyers and is in her third year of work with the Brighton and Commerce City Police Departments as a volunteer Victim’s Advocate.

We are grateful for the continued support and hard work from our team members—thank you Zack, Cindy, Carla, Dana, Sarah, and Taylor for your dedication to our team, community, and clients. any of us, including me, enjoy meeting people face-to-face. I am such a people person it’s crazy. I love people!!!

Not everyone is though, and I appreciate our differences.

Lately, I have been reflecting on the pros and cons of the COVID-19 time we have been living through. As much as it was a “rug pulled out from under our feet” moment, it allowed a lot of us to look at our daily activities in a different light.

I have always been one to think that the face-to-face appointments were the only way to go. I think this comes from my desire to be around people. One thing that I did learn from forced isolation was that we could actually accomplish a lot over Zoom or the phone. It was such an eye opening experience for me.

I wanted to bring this up this month because as people are getting back into what might feel like a more normal lifestyle, there could be some who are still a little hesitant to go full on. It’s good to be reminded that even with something as complicated as Medicare, we can accomplish a good understanding over the phone or with a virtual video appointment.

If you happen to be the type of person who prefers a phone call or Zoom/ Facetime call versus meeting in person, please know this is completely fine.

You can still understand the Medicare transition through either of these means.

We All Need to be Heard Offered by: Colorado Karate Club

I

t is one of my favorite times of the day, my first Karate class is starting to walk into the school, the Pre-Karate Class, our three, four, and five year olds are taking their places on the mat. Before class starts, I come in a few minutes early to talk to the students and learn about their day. They are always very excited to tell me all about it.

Today, the first one to raise his hand was Mark, a lively five year old with sparkling eyes. He excitedly calls out to me: “Sensei, Sensei…”, I turn my attention to him and say, “yes Mark?” He goes on and relates to me the latest game he has been playing on his grandma’s phone, some alien shooting game. He is talking so fast that I have trouble keeping up. Mark’s eyes shine with excitement as he relates how he shot the aliens and how he maneuvered around them.

As I listened to him, I found myself sharing his joy just from his sheer enthusiasm. For some reason that stuck with me, and that evening, after classes, I thought about how happy he was to be heard, and how happy I was to listen.

I also thought about all my daily interactions, and how I feel when someone listens to me intently… or conversely, how I feel when someone doesn’t.

For a child, and actually for adults as well, being listened to builds up their confidence and self esteem, it tells them that what they have to say matters to us, that we value them, and that they are important to us. However, contrary to what most of us believe, listening is not quite that easy, it takes work and practice. So I wanted to share with you a few tips to help us all listen better. I hope you will give them a try.

1. Refrain from giving advice - most people are not asking for advice, they just want to be heard. Giving advice implies judgement, and we all hate to be judged.

2. Stop thinking about what you are going to say next - We all have done that, the person is still talking and we are already thinking about our reply. Stop yourself right there, and simply immerse yourself into what the other person is trying to tell you.

3. Avoid the “Me too” response - Keep the focus on the other person. We always want the world and the conversations to revolve around “me”, but stop yourself from inserting “me” into the conversation. It is about them, so keep it that way.

4. Be sincerely interested in the other person - try to truly understand what they are thinking and feeling as they speak. Dare to care.

Making the effort and taking the time to listen is one of the best gifts we can share with those around us. When someone talks to you, they are telling you that you are important enough to them to share their experiences with you. So take the time today and give someone the gift of your undivided attention. You will both benefit from it.

he storybook marriage was over, Mary had lost her job, and with the extra time at home she discovered her husband’s infidelity. Mary’s father had died seven years ago and left her a substantial inheritance. Not believing that her husband could do such a thing, Mary had simply combined the inheritance with the other family assets. Unfortunately, in the divorce there was no way to determine what the inheritance was, and what was the marital property. Being unable to determine the difference, the judge divided all of the assets between Mary and her unfaithful husband. To add insult to injury, Mary had just lost half of her inheritance.

But the outcome of this case didn’t have to be this way. If Mary’s father had done a thorough estate plan, he would have left the inheritance to Mary in trust.

Mary would control the trust, but the trust would help her keep the inherited assets separate from the marital assets. If Mary used the assets inside the trust for her benefit, but did not draw them out of the trust and spend them, she could have easily identified the inherited assets in the divorce. As a result, the inherited assets would have been her separate property and would not have been divided in the divorce.

Estate planning can and should be more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages that protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in cookie-cutter form-driven estate plans. Individuals should look closely at all of the benefits a properly designed estate plan can provide to them while they are alive, and provide to their families after their death.

ater is the most important nutrient, and most of us are not getting enough. Water helps regulate body temperature, is vital for our circulation and helps with chemical reactions in the body. Our lean body mass is up to 75% water and we cannot survive even a few days without water.

Odds are, if you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. It is important to remember that at higher altitude, moisture evaporates more quickly and you need more water to stay hydrated than you would at sea level. In general, water is the best way to stay hydrated and drinking half your body weight in water daily is a great way to be sure you are getting enough. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, make it a goal to drink 75 ounces of water per day… that’s a lot!!

If you are in extreme heat or doing strenuous activity such as hiking, yard work, weight lifting or running for more than one hour, you will likely need electrolyte replacement as well. It is important to replace potassium, sodium and carbohydrate losses. Good options for this include electrolyte drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, Pedialyte).

Remember that electrolyte drinks are made to replace losses and are only recommended when needed because they do contain extra sugar that we do not otherwise need.

any dangerous accidents can be avoided by “baby-proofing” your home.

Drowning is the most common cause of accidental death of children in the United States. Pool safety was discussed in the June issue of The Brighton Buzz. For the safety of infants and toddlers, buckets should be stored empty. Young children should always be constantly supervised while taking a bath.

Ingestions and choking on small objects are another type of avoidable accident.

Button batteries are especially dangerous and should be safely stored. Avoid any purchases with small, strong magnets, which can also be especially dangerous if swallowed. Corrosive cleaning products such as toilet bowl cleaners, drain cleaners, and oven cleaners are also especially dangerous, as are laundry detergent pods.

It is best not to have them in the house at all if possible. Medications should be safely stored, out of sight and out of reach, in their original containers. Keep in mind that some children may be able to open “child-resistant” containers. The telephone number of the Poison Control Center is 800-222-1222.

A large amount of research consistently shows that infants are safest sleeping on their backs in a crib or bassinet. Because of the risk of suffocation, the parents’ bed is not a safe place for infants to sleep.

Take precautions to avoid burns. Make sure that you have working fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide and smoke detectors on each floor of the house. Make sure that sleepwear is made with flame-retardant materials. Set the water heater below 120 degrees F. If there are any firearms in the home, they should be stored in a locked case with ammunition locked up in a separate place.

Falls are another common type of childhood injury. Falls from furniture are common in infants. Toddlers and young children are at risk of falling downstairs or out of widows. Securely fastened safety gates, window stops or guards, and furniture corner covers can all reduce injuries. Do not count on a window screen to prevent a fall. Heavy furniture should be secured so that it cannot tip over on a child.

Finally, keep in mind that even with the best precautions, young children still require constant supervision.

or years I have wanted to create videos to help new students expedite the learning of horsemanship and horse behavior. Last spring, the pandemic gave me some down time to put together Part 1 of these lessons. The Horsemanship at Home online class has become a way for students to learn theory to help them understand why things are done the way they are done as well as “how to” reminders they could review before coming to a lesson. Students can review halter tying before they come so when they get here they remember how to tie it on the horse. This enables a student to get the horse out before their lesson so their paid lesson time is spent learning new skills. I was pleasantly surprised at students who purchased and watched Part 1 could move quickly through skills that normally take several lessons.

Part One of these classes go over safety, haltering, grooming, and horse psychology. It will also help a new horse owner get through some of the struggles of horse ownership and help develop the start of a great relationship with their horse. In

the United States of America we celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July. It is a national holiday that serves as a reminder of the birth our great nation. Celebrations of the holiday include family gatherings, parades, rodeos, and of course, fireworks. Many community celebrations in parks and stadiums across the country feature patriotic songs. Along with our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner,” many musical artists perform classic patriotic songs, and over the years new songs have been written and become part of popular culture. These songs remind us of the sacrifice of countless men and women whose blood and lives were lost fighting for and protecting freedom.

One song, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” contains the line “from every mountain top, let freedom ring.” Unfortunately, for many who have protected our freedom, they have been left with a lifetime of ringing in their head or ears. This ringing is known as tinnitus. This may be caused by loud noise exposure from equipment, machines, gunfire or other explosions that damage to the individual’s hearing.

Along with hearing loss, tinnitus is a symptom of multiple other conditions. Hundreds of medications list tinnitus as a potential side effect, including the common medication aspirin.

High blood pressure, nutrient deficiency, stress, traumatic head injuries, and toxicity in the body can all contribute to tinnitus.

The severity of tinnitus can range from a mild intermittent annoyance to a constant overwhelming screech. For some, the

tinnitus can be ignored while for others it impossible to block out. Many healthcare professionals have been taught nothing can be done to treat tinnitus. However, because tinnitus is a symptom of multiple different issues, quite often solving the root problem can alleviate most, if not all of the problem, depending on the cause.

Most people who experience tinnitus have hearing loss.

Treating the hearing loss can often lessen or even eliminate tinnitus. Recent studies have shown that those who have it treated sooner experience greater long-term relief. While results vary for each individual, some patients I have personally helped with tinnitus over the years have expressed that when their tinnitus subsided, they experienced other improvements, such as increased focus, decreased fatigue, less irritability, more patience, and improved sleep. The benefits may take time to experience as the tinnitus is interrupted, or may be immediate, such as when a temporary hearing loss is eliminated after removing a blockage of impacted wax.

At Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center we desire to help find relief from tinnitus symptoms. The first step to determining a potential cause of an individual’s tinnitus is a consultation, ear canal examination, and hearing screening. So if you or someone you know suffers from tinnitus, please give us a call. Here are some ideas: · Know your destination.“If you don’t know where you want to go, then it doesn’t matter which path you take.” This bit of wisdom, paraphrased from the classic children’s book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, may be appropriate for, say, hikers exploring a new landscape. But as an investor, it matters a great deal which path you take. If you only dabble in investing, occasionally putting some money into one investment or another, it will be difficult to build a portfolio that’s consistently working in your best interest.

It’s important to create a long-term investment strategy based on where you want to go in life – that is, how long you plan to work, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, and so on. · Match goals with investments. Some investments are designed to achieve certain goals. To illustrate: When you contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, you’re investing for one specific, long-term goal: a comfortable retirement. While you can tap into these accounts for other purposes – though doing so might incur immediate taxes and penalties – they are designed to provide you with income during your retirement years.

Similarly, you may have other investments for other purposes, such as a 529 education savings plan. Here’s the key point: Goals-based investing, by its nature, can help ensure your portfolio is always working on your behalf, in the way you intended. · Invest for growth. Ideally, hard work produces results, and one of the main results you want from your investments is growth – that is, you want your investments to appreciate in value so they can eventually help you meet your goals. But if you are overconcentrated in vehicles such as certificates of deposit (CDs) and government securities, you may end up lowering your growth potential. That’s not to say that CDs and Treasury bills are in some sense “lazy.” They can provide you with income and help you reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. But to achieve most of your goals, you’ll need a reasonable number of growth-oriented investments working for you, with the exact percentage based on your needs and life stages. · Check your progress. How else can you ensure your investments aren’t just taking it easy? By checking up on them. If you follow a buy-and-hold strategy, your portfolio shouldn’t require many changes if it already reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Too much buying and selling could jeopardize your ability to follow a consistent, long-term strategy. However, “buy and hold” doesn’t mean “buy and forget.” By reviewing your portfolio at least once a year, you can determine if your investments are performing as they should. If they’re not working for you as you’d like, you may need to make some changes.

ccording to a new survey from the National Association of REALTORS®, millennials (born between 1981 and 1996, Pew Research), also known as Gen Y and Echo Boomers, are the largest homebuying segment at thirty-seven percent. While millennials have been the largest share of homebuyers since 2014, the survey also found that they are most likely to be first-time homebuyers.

The lingering economic impacts of the Great Recession and the pandemic have caused millennials to delay homeownership. They’ve lived with parents, relatives, or friends for longer than any other modern generation, saving enough for a down payment on a home of their own.

The economy and pandemic have also impacted a larger number of homebuyers (18%) to purchase a home big enough to house multiple generations. Households often include adult siblings, adult children, parents, and/or grandparents. Pooling resources allows family and extended family to save money on housing, quarantine together, share cooking, housekeeping, and maintenance duties, and provide care for children and elders.

While many millennials work from home, they also commute. Deciding where to live depended strongly on the quality of the neighborhood, but also on convenience to get to their workplaces and avoid long commutes.

Fifty-seven percent of millennial homebuyers wanted to be closer to family and friends.

As a seller, what can you expect? Extensive virtual tours are a good idea for your marketing. Put your home in the best possible repair and update it with fresh cheerful paint and new appliances and fixtures wherever possible.
