rriving at this time of year seems like we’ve taken the “scenic route” to the month of December. Winding our way through the varying hills and valleys of 2020, we have all taken different routes than we’re used to in order to navigate the year. It feels somewhat similar to watching an episode of “The Amazing Race” with all the pitfalls along the way. Let’s celebrate the fact we’ve made it to December 2020 and we’re all winners for doing so!

Why Have Your Child Play A Musical Instrument? Offered by: Rich Germaine, Owner, Joyful Noise Music School

U

nlike competitive team sports, students in school band or orchestra can always participate. No one sits on the bench waiting for a chance to play.

Students who participate in school music programs are 52% more likely to go on to college and graduate. According to a recent study conducted by neurologist Dr. Frank Wilson, when a musician plays, he/she uses approximately 90% of the brain. Wilson could find no other activity that uses the brain to this extent. The study had also shown students who took more than 4 years of music and the other arts scored 34 points better on the verbal portion of the SAT than those who took music for less than a year. A recent Rockefeller Foundation study discovered that music students have the highest rate of admittance to medical schools. Music scholarships are also a great source of funding for a college education. When a child succeeds at the diverse tasks required to play an instrument, self-esteem is enhanced. As a student begins to understand the connection between practice and the quality of performance, self-discipline becomes self-enforcing. It may then be a short jump to making a connection between self discipline and performance in life. Students in band or orchestra develop higher cognitive skills and increased ability to analyze and evaluate information. They also learn about teamwork and conflict/resolution skills required for success in the modern workplace while enjoying the healthy, positive activity of band and orchestra with friends.

Bellco Announces New Branch Location To Serve Members In Brighton Offered by: Bellco Credit Union

O

n October 8, Bellco Credit Union celebrated the grand opening of its newest branch location in Brighton. “We have tremendous membership support in the fast-growing Brighton area, so it only made sense to expand our presence and open a new branch to better serve our members who live and work there,” said John Rivera, Bellco’s senior vice president and chief retail officer. The new branch is located at 450 E. Bromley Lane, in the Palizzi Marketplace, near the intersection of Sable Boulevard and Bromley Lane. The branch includes a full-service lobby, open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. As a long time Bellco member, I am excited to have not only the convenience but also the exceptional service provided by Bellco right here in Brighton,” shared Yvette Martinez, Community Concierge for the Brighton Chamber. In celebration of the new branch and in keeping with its commitment to the communities it serves, Bellco is supporting local organizations through donations. During today’s grand opening event, Bellco donated $2,500 to Almost Home, which provides assistance to those in the community that find themselves experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Bellco also made a donation of $1,000 to the Friends of Barr Lake, which provides funds to enhance education, recreation, and conservation at Barr Lake State Park. As part of this support, Bellco is also providing a one-day pass to the park to any existing or new members who opens an account at the Brighton location during the month of October. The pass can be used any day before November 30. Now in its 84th year, Bellco continues to provide the technology solutions members need to manage their money including online and mobile banking, mobile check deposit and phone and video appointments for members who wish to speak with a Bellco financial specialist without going to a branch.

Medicare Supplement CO “Free Pass”??? Offered by: Jennifer Bell - Bell Benefits, LLC

If

you are on Medicare and have a Medicare Supplement, you might have an opportunity to change your plan January 1, 2021 – June 30, 2021. What do I mean by “free pass”? In general, when you have a Medicare Supplement, you can change from plan to plan or insurance carrier to another insurance carrier at any time. The catch is you will have to answer a list of health questions and face the insurance carrier’s underwriting department. This can be a challenge for some. Most people will keep their existing Medicare Supplement once they have it because they like the coverage. One of the disadvantages though is the annual premium increases. As the monthly cost increases over time it can get expensive. When the Plan C and F were no longer available for folks turning 65 on or after January 1, 2020, those who already had the Plan C or F have been faced with a challenge. As people drop out of the Plan C and F, the premium increase percentages for those remaining can be larger year after year. The state of Colorado has created a Special Election Period for certain people January 1, 2021 – June 30, 2021. During this time frame, if you have one of the 3 plans listed below and want to make one of the below plan changes, you can without any health questions. - Plan C to Plan D - High Deductible Plan F to High Deductible Plan G - Plan F to Plan G You can do this with the same company you already have or you can switch to a different company. This can be very confusing so please call me with questions as to why you would stay in your plan or possibly change. 720.626.6524 Bee a part of The Buzz next month! To advertise, call:

Consider These Year-end Financial Moves Offered by: Tim Roberts - Edward Jones

W

e’re nearing the end of 2020 – and for many of us, it will be a relief to turn the calendar page on this challenging year. However, we’ve still got a few weeks left, which means you have time to make some year-end financial moves that may work in your favor.

Here are a few suggestions: • Add to your IRA. For the 2020 tax year, you can put in up to $6,000 to your traditional or Roth IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. If you haven’t reached this limit, consider adding some money. You actually have until April 15, 2021, to contribute to your IRA for 2020, but the sooner you put the money in, the quicker it can go to work for you. Plus, if you have to pay taxes in April, you’ll be less likely to contribute to your IRA then. • Make an extra 401(k) payment. If it’s allowed by your employer, put in a little extra to your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. And if your salary goes up next year, increase your regular contributions.

Financial Advisor

• See your tax advisor. It’s possible that you could improve your tax situation by making some investment-related moves. For example, if you sold some investments whose value has increased, you could incur capital gains taxes. To offset these gains, you could sell other investments that have lost value, assuming these investments are no longer essential to your financial strategy. Your tax advisor can evaluate this type of move, along with others, to determine those that may be appropriate for your situation. • Review your investment mix. As you consider your portfolio, think about the events of these past 12 months and how you responded to them. When COVID-19 hit early in the year, and the financial markets plunged, did you find yourself worrying constantly about the losses you were taking, even though they were just on “paper” at that point? Did you even sell investments to “cut your losses” without waiting for a market recovery? If so, you might want to consult with a financial professional to determine if your investment mix is still appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance, or if you need to make some changes. • Evaluate your need for retirement plan withdrawals. If you are 72 or older, you must start taking withdrawals – technically called required minimum distributions, or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Typically, you must take these RMDs by December 31 every year. However, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Stimulus (CARES) Act suspended, or waived, all RMDs due in 2020. If you’re in this age group, but you don’t need the money, you can let your retirement accounts continue growing on a tax-deferred basis. • Think about the future. Are you saving enough for your children’s college education? Are you still on track toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned? Or have your retirement plans changed as a result of the pandemic? All of these issues can affect your investment strategies, so you’ll want to think carefully about what decisions you may need to make. Looking back – and ahead – can help you make the moves to end 2020 on a positive note and start 2021 on the right foot.

Hard Truths About Driving Under The Influence Offered by: James Colgan, LLC

We

are coming upon the holiday season and this year people will be celebrating the end of a terrible 2020 and hoping for a better 2021. Celebrating means people will drink and, if you decide to drink and drive, it is very important that you understand some hard truths about that decision. If you are pulled over by the police, please cooperate. You are at a disadvantage if you fight the police. Police misconduct needs to be dealt with in a courtroom by an experienced attorney not on the side of a street. However, please understand this. You are not required to give the police evidence that can be used against you in court. You have constitutional rights that you can invoke even in a DUI investigation. Cooperation does not mean you are required give an extensive explanation to the police about what you have been doing. Cooperation does not mean you are required to do voluntary roadside maneuvers (sobriety tests). The police may believe that you were driving under the influence and arrest you. If they have a reasonable belief, the law requires you to submit to a chemical test. Most people have heard of the .08% blood alcohol level. If your blood alcohol level is .08% or higher you will be charged with driving under the influence. However, it is still a crime to drive with a blood alcohol level of .05% or higher or, in some circumstances, .02% or higher. Please call me at 303-990-0621 or e-mail me at James@jpcolganlaw.com so that I can protect your rights if you are arrested for a DUI.

here’s no denying this holiday season is, for many, much more challenging than any of us bargained for. While this year will undoubtedly look different from years past, our holiday celebrations can still be meaningful and enjoyable if we look at this as an opportunity to reflect and focus on the positives and possibilities. Author/illustrator Susan Branch says “The most precious gifts, the ones that last the longest, aren’t wrapped or under the tree. They’re the memories of people and places that live in our hearts forever.” Most often, the things that make meaningful traditions and lasting memories require time more than money, and if there’s an upside to the pandemic, sheltering at home has definitely given us more time. So what have you been able to do that you might not have done if “things were normal?” Hopefully you have already, or, if not, you will get creative and find new ways to celebrate. Who knows, you might just find, or create, some new traditions along the way. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells… aaahh Bah Humbug! Offered by: Willy Strohmeier - Colorado Karate Club

Y

eah, that’s me in the weeks before Christmas. My wife thinks I’m a sort of Grinch who doesn’t enjoy the Christmas spirit, and maybe she’s right. Don’t get me wrong, I do like Christmas, I am just annoyed at the constant noise, flashing lights, crazy shopping, and overly poppy cheerfulness of it, which expects me to prance around the snow ringing bells and spreading joy like fairy dust. Not much of a “Silent Night” for my taste. You see, I think that we have come to a huge imbalance between the noise of life, which multiplies during Christmas, and the silence required for reflective thought and prayer. And it is not just around Christmas that we are haunted by noise and flashing lights, but throughout the year, and I am guilty of this as well. We keep the TV on even just for background noise, jump in the car and the radio plays, go for a run, or a bike ride and got headphones strapped to our ears. Our phones ding non-stop with email, texting, and instant messages, or with notifications from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We seem to have become uncomfortable with silence and being alone with ourselves and with our thoughts. At the start of our Karate class, the students line up, sit on their knees (seiza), and the senior student calls for “Mokuso”, which means “to meditate”, it is a moment when we close our eyes and keep silent in order to clear our minds and focus on the upcoming training. This is an inherent part of the class, because we believe that a proper “mokuso” helps greatly to improve a student’s (and the teacher’s) performance in class. In the same manner, I believe that a few minutes of silence at the start of our day can be tremendously helpful for reflection, recollection, and unencumbered thought, especially in preparation for the day ahead. In a busy world, so full of distractions, meetings, chores, and conversations, remember that the most important conversations you may have, are the ones that you will have with yourself in the silence of your mind. I hope you make the time to listen to what you have to say.

Best wishes, and yes, Merry Christmas to you! Willy Strohmeier - Sensei

Who You’re Going To Call

Pie and Grace Offered by: Melissa Rippy - Rippy Insurance Agency / Allstate

ovember marked our seventh year of business in the Brighton community. We are grateful to each of you we have met along this journey and are honored to still be here to help what matters most. One of our favorite parts of being a small business is that we get to know our clients and their families and build relationships with them over the years. Grace Fletcher For the past eight years, we provide pies to our clients and they each get a choice of a pumpkin or apple pie during Thanksgiving. One of my favorite clients in our agency was Grace Fletcher. She would call me at different times throughout the year, sometimes in March or the summertime, just to make sure we were still giving away pie because it was her contribution for her family during the holiday. One year the weather was frigid cold and the roads were icy. Grace said she was too fearful of driving so I hand delivered her pie to her that year so she wouldn’t be without. Grace passed away on November 2nd, 2020. I asked her family here in Brighton if I could dedicate our pie giveaway going forward in Grace’s memory. The family agreed, and we are proud to share our first year of “Pie & Grace.” The COVID-19 Pandemic has made this year trying and uncertain for so many in our community and neighborhoods. Even though your Thanksgiving may look different this year, don’t forget two things – Pie & Grace.

T

he traditional approach to estate planning in America is a challenging system, at best. The chance of a successful planning experience is remote if you define “success” as “meeting people’s expectations”. Most people consider the subject of death and dying taboo, and as a result professionals have created a reactive system that has the capability of producing as many problems as it solves. The process usually starts with professional advisors accommodating the individual’s desire to make the process as short as possible (think: trip to the dentist!). Sadly, as long as the experience is short and relatively painless, most “planning” experiences are treated as “successful”. However, this is an extreme disservice to you and your heirs because the heirs often suffer the consequences of this type of planning. Professionals rely on sterile form documents, with little effort to educate individuals about their options and the additional steps necessary to actually produce results. This includes financial advisors who recommend simple document acquisition, as well as attorneys who perpetuate the myth that the documents accomplish everything. In reality, people accomplish the tasks associated with estate planning, and people receive the benefit, or bear the brunt of, the results produced through the planning process. Understanding the steps needed for success, customizing the plan to fit your family, and preparing your family to effectively implement the plan are critical steps to producing a smooth transition upon disability and death. These steps are regularly disregarded in most estate plans because they take more time and effort. There is a better process available for those who take the time to seek it out. If you have questions, I encourage you to gain more knowledge about available estate planning options, by visiting www. EstatePlansThatWork.com to sign up for a complimentary online workshop.

Buying a home can be an overwhelming process. From financing to negotiating to closing, there are a lot of moving pieces that can leave homebuyers bewildered. A real estate agent can help guide you through each step of the buying process, offering sound advice along the way. By working with a professional agent who knows the ins and outs of the real estate industry, you’ll not only end up with a great home, but you’ll also walk away with a great experience. Getting pre-approved by a lender By providing your real estate agent with some basic information about your income, savings, and debt, he or she can assist you in getting pre-approved by a reputable lender. The lender will then go over your financing options, what monthly payment amount you can afford, and what you can expect for down payment requirements and closing costs. Choosing a home For most buyers, choosing a home is an emotional process. An agent can assist you in this process by offering objective information about each property you look at. From local community information like schools and zoning to homespecific details like condition and amenities, an agent can help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Making an offer Once you’ve found the home of your dreams, an agent will research recent comparable sales of similar homes in the area to help determine a fair selling price. Based on those comparable sales, as well as other factors like inspections and repairs, an agent will then help you structure an offer and negotiate to get the very best deal possible. We would love to walk with you on your journey to a new home! Please give us a call and lets grab a cup of coffee for a no hassle, free consultation. Dan & Beth with The Haven Team 303-709-3501.

Staying Healthy During the Holidays Offered by: Rachael Janoso, M.D.- Brighton Pediatrics, P.C.

T

his has been a very stressful year. We are all probably looking forward to spending the holidays with our loved ones. Most holiday traditions involve traveling to see family, making delicious home-cooked meals and treats, and exchanging gifts with our friends and family. Here are some ways to stay healthy this holiday season. Traveling for the holiday season to see our family is a tradition. Consider taking a road trip rather than braving a crowded airport terminal, even if it may take you a few extra days. A fun and safer alternative is having a zoom party with the whole family! If you are traveling by plane, remember to wear masks, wash your hands, and maintain appropriate social distancing. Another holiday staple is baked goods and home-cooked meals. It is still important to make sure you and your kids eat healthy, even during the holiday season, including a variety of fruits, vegetables, and well-balanced portions. Consider trying new recipes, and let your kids help you prepare the meal so they can join in on the fun. Lastly, finding time and motivation to exercise has been very hard this year. Get a jump on your New Year’s resolutions and take a walk outside together as a family if the weather is nice, or maybe go out for a nice bike ride through the neighborhood! Find safe and fun activities to do as a family that get you a little sweaty and get the heart rate up!

Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season! Please visit our website at www.brightonpeds.com

Protect Your Hearing – Introducing SoundGear hearing protection Offered by: John Wilson, B.S., BC-HIS - Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center

W

hile I have met many people who wished they had worn good hearing protection, I have never met anyone who wished they had not. Over the last 13 years I have seen many patients suffering with hearing loss, tinnitus, or both, after being exposed to loud noises in a singular incident. These incidents have included exposure to loud noises from airbag explosions, blasts from firearms, hammering on metal, musical performances, and using power tools in an enclosed space. Others have come in with the same symptoms after years of exposure to loud or moderately loud sounds in settings that include everything from dental offices, to construction, to factories, to hairdressing, to woodworking hobbies, to orchestras, to rock concerts. Just last week a patient called and explained an incident occurred where they were exposed to a loud noise and were now struggling to hear. They had been wearing hearing protection, noise reducing ear muffs, but had taken them off to speak with a family member. After conversing they returned to the area where the loud noise had been happening, which was now quiet, and did not put their hearing protection back on. Immediately upon returning to the area, a loud noise occurred and they instantly realized they had lost a significant amount of hearing. A hearing test confirmed they had suffered significant hearing loss compared to a test just a few months prior. When it comes to noise induced hearing loss, damage is a function of time and intensity. This means extremely loud sounds can do permanent damage in a very short period of time, while sounds that seem safe, if

listened to for extended period of time, can do the same amount and type of damage. For example, a singular gunshot in an enclosed space can do similar damage to repeatedly working in a factory for eight hours a day. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has released specifics regarding noise level and exposure times and when hearing protection is required to be worn. Custom hearing protection offers a level of safety that may not be found using over-the-counter options. For many, listed NRR (noise reduction rating) of foam plugs may not be achievable in an individual’s ear given the size and shape of the ear canal. Unless the plugs fit snugly, they will not prevent sound energy from reaching the eardrum. For this reason, I always recommend wearing protective muffs in addition to one-size-fits-some foam plugs. While multiple layers ensure a greater level of protection, muffs are not always suitable. In order for muffs to work, they must completely seal around the ear. Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus center carries multiple brands of hearing protection, including SoundGear. SoundGear comes in multiple styles including solid ear plugs, filtered earplugs, and electronic plugs suitable for everything from dental offices to military applications. Custom filtered and electronic hearing protection allows individuals to hear environmental and speech sounds while protecting hearing. The newly released Phantom now allows the wearer to stay protected, whether they want to speak to others, listen to music or need to speak on the phone, all in a custom rechargeable device.

How can you know you are partnering with high-quality hospice providers? Guidelines on the Hospice Compare website and how it can help Offered by: Dawn Darvalics, PMP, Director of Quality and Education, Care Synergy

T

hree years ago the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched a useful tool, on the www.medicare.gov/hospicecompare website, that can help anyone when choosing a hospice provider. The Hospice Compare website allows you to easily search for hospices by name or location and compare publicly reported data on hospice providers. The data is divided into five categories, including General Information/Level of Care, Conditions, Location of Care, Family Experience of Care and Quality of Care. The first category, General Information/Level of Care, defines the four levels of care covered in the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Offering all levels of care, including Respite and Continuous care, are important in identifying how hospices can appropriately care for patients. Data for the second and third categories — Conditions and Locations of Care — are extracted from Medicare claims to show general characteristics of hospice providers. You can also see the breakdown of where a hospice agency provides most care, such as at home, in an assisted living facility, nursing facility, or inpatient hospice facility. Finally, the last two categories are most important to consider. These show data on quality measures that hospice agencies are now required to submit. The Family Experience of Care data is a subjective measure of the experience of a patient’s primary caregiver. It comes from the Hospice Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) survey. The data shows what percentage of caregivers would rate their hospice a 9 or 10 (on a scale of 1-10) and what percentage would “definitely” recommend the hospice agency to friends and family. The last category of data is Quality of Care. It shows the percentage of patients who received at least one visit from a registered nurse, a physician, a nurse practitioner, or a physician assistant in the last three days of life. Also under the Quality of Care tab, you will find scoring on how well hospices are doing when patients are first admitted. You should expect a good hospice partner to receive high scores on this Quality of Care data. It is essentially a straight-forward measure of whether hospice agencies are completing essential care processes or not. hances are if you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from chronic pain, arthritis, migraine headaches, loss of motor control, depression/ anxiety, or insomnia, CBD may be a safe alternative or addition to other medications that you are currently taking. Over the past several years there has been a mounting body of clinical evidence to suggest that CBD can significantly improve the symptoms related to each of these conditions. CBD is short for cannabidol, an all natural supplement derived from the cannabis plant. Cannabidol along with the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and phytonutrients found in hemp work in concert with our internal Endocannabinoid Receptor System to maintain healthy cellular functions. Unlike its cousin Medical Marijuana, CBD is an all natural non-psychoactive cannabinoid that can improve your overall health but cannot get you “high.” One of the biggest concerns in the medical community has been the lack or regulation or quality control that exists in the market. Numerous patients have reported inconsistent responses to the products that they buy or in more extreme cases serious illness have come from taking impure products. The other issue our patients face has been the lack of medical knowledge by those selling the products. While CBD is generally considered safe there are certain medications that can interact with it and you should always ask if it is safe to take with your normal regiment. At Platte Valley Pharmacy we carry Ananda Professional, an FDA-inspected manufacturer that produces a safe and consistent full spectrum hemp product that you can count on every time. Our specially trained pharmacists can answer the questions that you may have regarding its use and safety in helping you.

Ten Facts About the Flu Vaccine Offered by: Carrie Albert-Martin MD

With the first cases of the flu (influenza) virus being reported in Colorado this season, it’s more important than ever to get the vaccine for you and your children. Read on for some quick facts about the vaccine. 1. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months. 2. There are two options for the flu vaccine: the inactivated vaccine, given as a shot, or the live-attenuated vaccine, given as a nasal spray. These are considered equally effective. The nasal spray is approved for children over age 2. 3. This year, the flu vaccine covers four influenza strains: two influenza A and two influenza B strains. Holiday planning during the pandemic Traditionally, the end of the year is filled with holiday celebrations, family gatherings, and good cheer — but the holidays will look a little different this year. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the CDC cautions that holiday gatherings and travel carry a high risk for getting or spreading COVID-19.* That’s why it’s important to celebrate safely this year — and act responsibly to protect yourself and your loved ones. Celebrating with those in your household is the only safe option and the best way to protect yourself and others. But there are still many ways you can show you care this holiday season, even if it’s just over the phone or video chat. Here are 3 questions to consider, so you can reduce the risk of spreading the virus while still connecting with family.

Who will be there?

It’s important to limit the number of people you gather with. The general rule is to stick to people in your household or your “quaranteam” — also known as a quarantine bubble or a pandemic pod. For months, the term quaranteam has been used to describe the social circle you see in person during the pandemic to help you feel supported and connected to others. It’s a way to limit the risk of infection while also maintaining the social connections that benefit our mental health. For example, your quaranteam may include another family, a few select friends, or your neighbors. When you form a quaranteam or quarantine bubble, you make an agreement as a group to only see people within that bubble. It’s OK to set boundaries or tell your friends and family you don’t feel comfortable getting together.

together with your family and you usually stay overnight, you could limit your plans to a physically distanced dinner party instead.

How will you socialize safely?

Getting creative and being flexible with your annual traditions will help keep everyone safe. According to the CDC, gatherings with more preventive measures like wearing a mask, physically distancing, and washing your hands pose less risk than gatherings where fewer or no preventive measures are being implemented.* If you do attend a holiday gathering, you should consider self-isolating for 2 weeks after to protect the health of others. It’s also important to get a flu shot before attending a gathering to help protect yourself and your loved ones. So, whether you’re celebrating with your household or just video chatting with loved ones, think about how to adjust your traditions to lower your risk of getting or spreading COVID-19. Remember to take care of your physical health Where will you spend time, and for how long? as well as your mental health throughout the holiday season. And may your days Indoor gatherings generally pose more risk than outdoor gatherings so, if weather be merry — and healthy and safe. permits, try to stay outdoors. If your celebration is indoors, ventilation with open ............... windows or doors can help lower risk. *“Holiday Celebrations and Small Gatherings,” Centers for Disease Control and Also, shorter gatherings are lower risk. So, for example, if you’re planning to get Prevention, accessed September 21, 2020.

Hectic Holidays Tips to Minimize Stress and Maximize Wellbeing Offered by: Jessica Ahmed - Brighton Acupuncture

T

he holidays are an opportunity to connect with family and friends, take a restful break from work and experience gratitude for our gifts in life, but often we are so stressed out that we can’t fully enjoy ourselves. For this reason, it may be the most important time of year to keep up exercise, diet and wellness routines, but it is also the easiest time to stray from healthy habits. With a little planning, you can indulge without wreaking havoc on your health. Here are a few suggestions: Diet and Exercise: If you love great food as I do, holidays are a time when even more exercise is necessary to maintain your weight (trying to lose weight this time of the year is very challenging!). Sneak in 10-minute bursts of extra exercise throughout the day if you are too busy to extend your current workouts. Fill up on vegetables, water and protein before holiday feasts so that when you inevitably indulge in high-calorie, starchy and fatty foods, you can control your portions.

Acupuncture: Increased holiday stress can lead to irritability, anxiety, moodiness, digestive disorders, tense muscles and pain. Acupuncture helps you better deal with stress by calming the nervous system, reducing muscular tension and triggering the release of endorphins, your body’s painkilling and stress-reducing hormones. Cultivate Gratitude: Take a moment to be thankful for someone or something in your life. Even during the most difficult times, we can access a little contentment through gratitude, so try writing down five things for which you are grateful each day for a week. Consider expressing this gratitude in your community by volunteering, or simply finding opportunities to express kindness and compassion in your everyday life.

Seventy-nine acres of significant farmland and water preserved in Historic Splendid Valley Offered by: Anneli Berube, Ag Innovation Specialist

T

he City of Brighton and Adams County, with the expertise of The Conservation Fund, have successfully preserved 79 acres of prime farmland in Historic Splendid Valley, the vibrant agricultural area south of Brighton and within the Greater Denver Metropolitan area. This partnership, along with grants from the Adams County Open Space Sales Tax program and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), have enabled a conservation easement to be placed on this property to allow farming to continue while ensuring the land will not be subdivided or developed. The farmland is located south of Brighton along 144th Avenue and Sable Boulevard, adjacent to other preserved farms to the north and west. The preservation of this area furthers the mission of Historic Splendid Valley to protect one of the state’s last remaining areas of urban agricultural land with available water rights to ensure that food production can continue for the benefit of the local community and the region. “This is a story of local community pride in a city with such rich agricultural heritage,” said Greg Mills, Mayor of the City of Brighton. “This is a critical piece of the area’s identity and will now be preserved for future generations to come.” “The Historic Splendid Valley project benefits Colorado’s local food security, agricultural heritage and water conservation. It protects resources in an area identified as the single best place left in the greater Denver Metro area for growing, processing and distributing local food crops, as well as water rights from one of Colorado’s oldest ditches,” said Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenberg. “Thanks to the foresight and commitment of the Morimitsu family, the prime soils and water essential to farming this land are being preserved, helping sustain one of Colorado’s most established agricultural operations.” “Preserving these local farmland properties provides many immediate and long-term benefits to our community,” said Emma Pinter, Adams County Commissioner and Board Chair. “The fresh fruits and vegetables grown on these farms are distributed locally and regionally, including supplying our local food bank and pantries, and help sustain the history and heritage of the area, while supporting our local economy.” The Conservation Fund, a national environmental nonprofit focused on conserving land and water in ways that make both environmental and economic sense, acquired the property when it came up for sale and brought the multiple partners together for an outcome that benefits the community and the local food economy. Grants awarded to this project from Adams County and GOCO were combined to complete the conservation easement permanently protecting the property’s irreplaceable soils, water rights, and open space resources. More than 80 percent of Adams County residents recently voted to make the County’s Open Space Sales Tax program permanent, showing the popularity of this critical funding source for preserving important open space and agricultural lands and creating, improving and maintaining parks, trails and recreation facilities. “With stiff competition from developers for these farmlands and water rights on Brighton’s edge, the urgency and threats are as high here as anywhere in the State,” said Christine Quinlan of The Conservation Fund. “Adding the Morimitsu family’s historic farm to the conservation effort in Historic Splendid Valley boosts the community’s economy and retains its agricultural heritage.” “We’re proud to invest Colorado Lottery proceeds in the conservation of farmland for the production of local crops as well as a scenic buffer of land for people in cars and on bikes cruising by to enjoy,” said GOCO Executive Director Chris Castilian. “And we’re especially grateful to the Morimitsu family who made the permanent protection of the land possible.”

About the farm

Prior to this land being homesteaded, it was used by indigenous Arapaho and Cheyenne people who would camp near the South Platte River while following buffalo herds across the plains. The farmland was homesteaded in 1879 by Richard and Olive Talbot both of whom constructed many of the structures on the property. After leasing the land from the Talbots for six years, Suekichi “George” and Toi Morimitsu purchased it in 1939. The Morimitsu family owned the property for the next 80 years. George and Toi raised 12 children on the farm. They grew vegetables like onions, corn and beans to sell to the local pickling company, Kuners. Members of the Morimitsu family recall stories of the kids hoeing the rows of crops on their way to and from Pleasant Plains School on 144th Avenue and Potomac Street, including a trip back and forth for lunch each day. The family’s long tenure on the property saw them through World War II, in which three of the Morimitsu sons fought, while the second son, Kiyoshi, stayed home to tend to the farm. When George passed away in 1963, operations were turned over to his son Hayato, who went by Henry. Henry and his wife Taeko farmed the property, continuing to grow a variety of vegetables until Henry retired in 1986. They also raised three children on the farm. Following Henry’s retirement the property was leased to Petrocco Farms, which still farms it to this day. “Our family is honored to be given the opportunity to leave a legacy in Historic Splendid Valley. It was a long and sometimes difficult process to bring all parties together to sell our farm to The Conservation Fund, but in the end we feel that it was worth the work to see this prime farmland preserved for the benefit of future generations,” shared Amy Bokn, daughter of Henry Morimitsu. With the conservation easement in place, the parcel was recently purchased by Petrocco Farms, a local farm with deep roots in the area. The Petrocco family has been farming since the early 1900s and in Splendid Valley since 1960. Headquartered near Brighton, today their operation comprises over 3,000 acres in Adams and Weld Counties. Petrocco grows a variety of vegetables, from cabbage and onions to leafy greens and sweet corn. These crops are largely distributed from the Petrocco Farms processing facility, located approximately one mile as the crow flies from the Morimitsu Farm property. This abundant variety of vegetables can be found in many of Colorado’s largest food chains and food service outlets. The farm also donates thousands of pounds of produce to food banks throughout Colorado, including Food Bank of the Rockies and Colorado Care & Share, and to local events like Welby Days and Mt. Carmel Summer Festival. “As farmers, we are the stewards of this land,” said Dave Petrocco, Sr. “We take great pride in our growing practices and the vegetables we grow. Preserving this farm, which is central to our operation, helps ensure that high quality food can continue to be grown in this area for many years to come.” Visit us online at: www.TheBrightonBuzz.com

5 Tips for Buying New Home in a Fast Moving Market Offered by: Scott and Lora Nordby - Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices

T

he Denver metro real estate market hasn’t had any signs of slowing this year. Earlier in the year, when most of the state was under a stay-at-home order, demand continued to grow. This resulted in a fast-moving summer and autumn for real estate that has continued into the last few months. Next year is set up to continue this trend, so if you’re considering buying a new home, check out these tips before you start home shopping.

Know Your Limits

It’s important to get pre-approved and consider what monthly payment you’re comfortable with, so you can stay in the range that meets your budget before you begin looking at homes.

CLOSING EACH TRANSACTION

Wiggle Room

Consider looking at homes on the lower end of your budget. This gives you wiggle room to make quick counter offers in a bidding war.

The 80/20 Rule

627 East Bridge Street • Brighton, CO 80601

If you look at a home that meets 80% of your requirements, make an offer. When homes are only staying on the market for days and not weeks, it’s important that you be quick to get your offer on the table. Remember, someone else looked at the home yesterday that you want to make a decision on tomorrow.

The Letter NYSE: FNF

www.heritagetco.com

In a hot market, some real estate professionals will help you write “The Buyers Letter”. This short and sweet note to the sellers helps them put a story with the offer, which can set you apart from other bidders. Lean on your REALTOR® for help with this, as there are thing’s you’ll want to emphasize and things to avoid saying.

Get a Champ in Your Corner

When houses are bought and sold quickly, it’s important to work with someone who knows the market, knows the neighborhood, and is invested in helping you reach your real estate goals. Be sure to work with a REALTOR® who is full-time, so they are available to negotiate on your behalf when you find a house that you’re ready to make an offer on! If you’re ready to buy a new home, call us at 303-905-8850. We can make sure you know the process, have all your questions answered, and are set up to find the home of your dreams.
