“H
e’s such a sweet kid.” A mom says to me as she proceeds to tell me how other kids pick on him at school. I hear this often, and it is something I have been hearing for several years. Because somewhere around third or fourth grade, many parents discover that their kind, agreeable child has become the target for other kids’ amusement. Here’s why. Bullies aren’t looking just for weak kids to harass. They’re scanning for the predictable kid. A kind child is wonderfully predictable, he won’t escalate, won’t tell, will apologize for something he didn’t do, and will come home and say school was fine. That isn’t a weakness. It’s a virtue being used against him. Usually what stops this targeting doesn’t require using your hands at all. Head up, eyes forward, an answer given at full volume instead of a mumble. I’ve watched this change of posture and attitude move a kid out of the predictable column in a single semester. Now the harder part, because parents deserve honesty here. “Tell a teacher or adult” is always the right first move, and it is often enough. But we all know a child who did exactly that, and nothing changed. He then starts inventing stomachaches on Sunday night. He now figures that he is on his own, and he has no option but to put up with the verbal and sometimes physical abuse until the end of the school year. Let me be clear.

Words are never a reason to put your hands on someone. Never. Not an insult, not a name. A child who swings because he was called something has already lost, and at my school he’d hear that from me. But no child should be required to stand still and be hurt. Our dojo kun, the code we recite at the end of every class, tells us to refrain from violent behavior. Refrain. Not abstain. That word was chosen with care. We aren’t raising pacifists. We’re raising people who are capable, and who therefore almost never have to prove it. This mindset personifies the old adage that says: “I would rather be a samurai tending his garden than a gardener caught in a battle.”

One last thing, and most parents miss this. Tell your child clearly your expectations. I always defer to the parents’ chosen way of action, but your child must hear it from you. Kids do nothing out of confusion, they honestly don’t know whether they’re allowed to defend themselves or just take it. So say it (if you agree with this posture): “if someone puts their hands on you and you can’t walk away, you may protect yourself, and you will not be in trouble with me. Then you tell me everything.”

It was learning to spend. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many retirees find the shift from building savings to living off them emotionally difficult, even when they’ve planned carefully. Here are five smart strategies that can help you feel more confident about what’s ahead. Give yourself permission to spend conservatively. Your retirement plan likely assumes a certain annual spending amount, with increases each year to account for inflation. All else being equal, the lower those initial withdrawals, the longer your money will last. A financial advisor can help you set up portfolio withdrawals personalized to your goals and situation. Feel free to give yourself permission to spend those amounts, knowing there’s intention behind them. For many retirees, the challenge isn’t math — it’s mindset. After years of being rewarded for saving, spending can feel like doing something wrong. 8/18/26 12:36 PM It can help to reframe withdrawals as a paycheck you’ve already earned. For example, using your monthly distribution to cover travel, hobbies or time with family isn’t indulgent; it’s the purpose of the plan you built. Connecting spending to your values can make it feel more natural and sustainable. Do be sure to review your spending regularly and don’t forget to set aside funds for annual expenses like taxes and insurance. Keep some cash on hand. A general rule of thumb for retirees is to keep about 12 months’ worth of withdrawals in a separate account for spending and another three to five years’ worth in short-term, fixed-income investments. This cushion can allow your stock investments time to recover from a market downturn, reducing the need to sell investments when markets are down. That said, holding too much cash carries its own risk, as your portfolio may not grow fast enough to keep pace with inflation. So, while some cash is good, you’ll also want to remain invested in assets with more growth potential to help your portfolio last through retirement. Review regularly. Retirement can last 25 years or more, and even the bestlaid plans need updating along the way. Review your financial strategy at least once a year or after any major life change. Stay flexible. Even small adjustments to your spending can have a big impact on how long your money lasts. Retirees who hold off on spending increases in years when their portfolio declines are often able to stretch their savings further than those who increase withdrawals each year for inflation regardless of market performance. Making the switch from saving to spending takes both careful planning and a genuine shift in mindset. A financial advisor can help you build out an effective approach to switch from saving to spending, and work with you so you can fully enjoy the retirement you worked so hard to reach.

he U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have issued new guidance intended to make it easier for individuals to support children through Trump Accounts. Created under the Working Families Tax Cuts legislation, these tax-advantaged savings accounts are designed to help families build long-term financial resources for children. Revenue Procedure 2026-25 establishes a gift tax reporting safe harbor that removes certain reporting requirements for qualifying contributions made by individual donors. Under the safe harbor, eligible contributions will not be subject to gift tax reporting requirements for the year in which they are made. This relief responds to concerns from taxpayers who wanted to contribute to accounts for family members but were hesitant about taking on additional filing obligations. IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano said the change is intended to reduce administrative burdens for relatives and friends who wish to help fund a child’s future. Families may establish Trump Accounts through the IRS Individual Online Account system. A parent, guardian, or other authorized individual can begin the process by filing Form 4547, Trump Account Election(s). Eligible U.S. citizen children born between 2025 and 2028 may also qualify for a $1,000 federal pilot program contribution when an account is opened, giving families an additional opportunity to start saving early. Treasury and the IRS have also proposed regulations that would permit employers to contribute up to $2,500 annually, tax-free, to Trump Accounts for employees or their dependents through employer-sponsored contribution programs. The proposal includes plan requirements, reporting responsibilities, and nondiscrimination rules designed to make the benefit broadly available rather than favoring highly compensated employees. If finalized, this framework could offer employers a meaningful new benefit while helping families take positive steps toward building long-term savings for their children.

B
efore living in two of the largest cities in America and being very successful working for multiple national companies, and long before opening Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center, I was a small-town kid. Prior to moving to Fort Lupton during my freshman year of high school, I grew up mostly in small rural towns in Utah and Wyoming. Entertainment as a kid revolved around animals, nature, rodeo, some sports and community activities. The first competition I ever won was sheep riding when I was 4 years old, back before they gave everyone a participation trophy. My sisters competed in rodeo, 4-H and Future Farmers of America. Moving to Colorado was a bit of a culture shock as the world moved faster and there were so many more cars, people, and things to do. After moving to Colorado one activity I looked forward to every year was the Adams County Fair. The fair was the last big event before summer ended and school and football season started. Everything from the carnival rides to the entertainment was exciting. Seeing the livestock, 4-H exhibits and all the ribbons and awards was fun and fascinating. Now, several decades later I still go to the fair, but the experience is much different, partly because of my stage of life, and partly because the fair has become much smaller than it once was. For a period of time, I took my children and rode the carnival rides with them. But as they grew, and as motion sickness became more disruptive, I became more of a spectator. Then last year the fair took on a whole new meaning as my daughter joined 4-H and entered her first project into the fair. This year my son joined her at the 4-H club and they both
entered projects which led to a new and exciting experience for me. On the first day of the fair, I hurriedly left the office early so we could go as a family to see how the judging of their projects went. We were all nervous and excited with anticipation as we walked into the Waymire Dome and saw all the different displays. I looked at the many projects with a newfound understanding and admiration of the work and effort involved knowing what it took for my kids to complete their projects. We quickly made our way to each child’s project and found both of them had numerous ribbons. My daughter jumped with joy when she saw her awards that included a ribbon indicating she had won Grand Champion for her leather work, while my son won Reserve Grand Champion for his project on how music is good for people. His self-directed project included him going to two assisted-living facilities in Brighton where he played the guitar and sang for the residents. The experience of seeing the reactions of both my children as they were recognized for their exceptional hard work is one of the happiest experiences of my life. It reminded me of why I made the sacrifice to leave a very successful job and create Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center. As we celebrate our ninth anniversary this month, we want to once again say thank you for all your support for the past nine years. Whether you came in for a hearing screening or comprehensive hearing or tinnitus evaluation, to have wax removed, to purchase hearing protection or hearing aids, or to have your hearing aids cleaned or repaired, your choice to support us makes a real difference to us and to our community. summer winds down, Medicare beneficiaries should keep an eye on their mailbox for one of the most important documents they’ll receive all year, the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). This is required to be delivered by September 30 and is sent by your current Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan. It outlines any changes that will take effect in 2027 starting January 1. Even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s important to remember that plans can change from year to year. It’s tempting to set Medicare mail aside with the rest of the seasonal paperwork, but the ANOC deserves your attention. Changes to your plan could affect your healthcare costs, your access to doctors and hospitals, or whether your medications are still covered affordably. This document explains what’s changing with your Medicare plan, but it’s just as important to consider what’s changed for you. Next month, we’ll look at the health and lifestyle changes that can help determine whether your current coverage is still the right fit. Reality Check on Your Retirement Savings Offered by T. Lloyd Worth, Worth Wealth Management
Whether you’re 23 or 35, it’s important to know whether you are saving enough for your retirement. There is no time like the present to ensure you are allocating enough funds to your retirement account. With folks routinely living into their 80s and 90s, it’s more important than ever to ensure your money lasts your lifetime. Millennials have the advantage of time. You can benefit from compounding and the long-term trends that can make a real difference over the course of several decades. A good savings target is 15% of your income. That’s a very general target, and in many cases, it’s too conservative. That can be a real challenge if you are also saving for a house and/or paying off student loans. The important point is to make a commitment to your retirement savings by contributing a consistent amount with each paycheck (or if you are self-employed, every invoice). The absolute percentage is secondary; more important is to set a goal and stick to it. How will your lifestyle change? In retirement, you may no longer be drawing a salary, although many folks take up some form of selfemployment that brings in an income. It’s up to you whether earnings will be part of your retirement plan. If not, your retirement savings should be robust enough to supplement your Social Security without sacrificing your lifestyle. You can check your projected Social Security payments on the Social Security Administration’s website (www.ssa.gov). Time may heal all wounds. Millennials may have unpleasant memories of the Great Recession and the family turmoil it could have caused. A conservative attitude toward risk isn’t surprising given those circumstances, but sticking to overly conservative investments has its own risks, such as not keeping up with inflation. You have time to recover from the inevitable ups and downs of the markets, which means you might want to consider adding some aggressive investments to your retirement account. Figure out how long your savings will last. To get a reasonably accurate figure, you should derive your annual “burn rate.” That’s the amount of savings you’ll need to live on each year. You then see whether it will last for your estimated life expectancy, which you can check with any number of online calculators. If the answer is no, you’ll have to increase the amount you save now and/or cut back on your retirement plans. Your retirement finances are not set in stone. You have options at any age. Embracing the Whole Child From Infancy Through Adolescence
preparation of Medicare AEP next month, here are a few things you can start to think about. During this time, Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, you are able to (1) leave a Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan and possibly go to a Medicare Supplement instead, (2) switch to a different MA Plan, or (3) change/add a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. If you decide to make a change, the new plan will be effective Jan. 1. In 2026, we saw a shift in the way MA plans offered coverage. Many of the plans reduced the added benefits which includes Dental and Vision coverage, OTC benefits, or the grocery benefit. Many of the MA plans also increased their out-of-pocket limits and copays in the plan. If you experienced this shift, be sure to keep your eyes on any plan changes for 2027. The changes will not publish until Oct. 1 but MA plan members will receive their Annual Notice of Changes soon. If you have thought about changing from a MA plan to a Medicare Supplement/Medigap plan, this is the time to investigate that option as well. You will have to answer a list of medical underwriting questions to be accepted in the Medigap plan. If you have a medical need that requires ongoing medical treatment, you will likely not be able to enroll in a Medigap plan. Also, if you have any recent major medical events such as cancer, stroke, heart conditions, kidney problems, liver issues, or chronic breathing problems, you will not be able to make the switch. There are certain loopholes in Medicare that do allow you to switch from a MA plan to a Medigap without underwriting. For example, if you move outside of your MA plan’s service area, or if your MA plan leaves the area, you will have a Guaranteed Issue right into a Medicare Supplement. There are many others so never hesitate to ask. I always recommend checking your plan’s new coverage to be sure it will be beneficial for you the following year. It can be as simple as a quick phone call or email to your Medicare Insurance agent. he Front Range real estate market seems to present a contradiction. Home sales are down, mortgage rates are substantially higher, affordability is challenging, homes are taking longer to sell, and price reductions are common. So why haven’t home prices fallen significantly? The answer comes down to supply and demand. We have fewer buyers, but we also have fewer homeowners willing to sell. At the end of July, detached homes in the Denver Metro area had just under three months of inventory. The median price was $660,000, up 1.54 percent from a year ago. Condos and townhomes tell a different story, with nearly 5.7 months of inventory and a median price of $380,000, down 2.56 percent. Higher mortgage rates haven’t just affected buyers. Millions of homeowners purchased or refinanced when rates were around 2.5 to 3.5 percent. They may want a larger home, want to downsize, or simply want something different, but selling means giving up that mortgage and replacing it with one at a substantially higher rate. For many homeowners, the numbers don’t make sense. They aren’t necessarily happy with their current house. They are happy with their current mortgage. Buyers have also become more selective. A home in a desirable location that is updated, shows well, and is priced correctly can still sell quickly. Homes with deferred maintenance, dated finishes, poor presentation, an awkward floor plan, or even a slightly high price can sit much longer. We’re seeing plenty of price reductions, but that doesn’t necessarily mean home values are declining. If a seller lists a home for $700,000 when its market value is closer to $650,000 and eventually reduces it to $650,000, the home’s value didn’t decline by $50,000. The asking price did. The market rejected the original price. Today’s market is slower, and condition, location, presentation and pricing matter much more. But fewer sales do not automatically mean lower prices. Supply matters. Demand matters. What really matters is the relationship between the two. The market hasn’t stopped working. It has simply become much more selective.
