t’s hard to think about Thanksgiving as the summer temperatures still linger and Christmas is already filling store shelves and dressing storefronts. As we rush into the holiday season, in today’s fast-paced world, shopping has never been more convenient with online offerings, rapid delivery and low prices. But, as it does each year, the small businesses and local shop owners that fill our pages remind me of the personalized service and custom one-of-a-kind opportunities just a few minutes from our front doors. The holiday season is a crucial time for many businesses. Events like “Small Business Saturday” remind us to support the shops that keep our communities vibrant. It’s also important that we continue to support all of our businesses large and small throughout the year to ensure that not only they continue to thrive – but, that all of those who are employed by these businesses thrive. This holiday season, consider visiting our local businesses first. Every purchase makes a meaningful difference, helping build a stronger, more connected community for everyone. And, don’t miss the many fun and joyful events and traditions that our community has to offer: 42th Annual Turkey Trot Sat, Nov. 21 (See page 22 for details)

n the morning of every Karate tournament I ever entered, I had butterflies in my stomach. I don’t compete anymore, but this past weekend, there they were again. We had our Fall Karate Tournament at our Westminster dojo, and I was anxious for my students. I wished they could all win, even though that isn’t realistic. But more than anything, I wanted everyone to do their best and grow from the experience. Before the first match, I gathered every group and told them what I tell every competitor: not everyone wins. In a competition, one person wins and one person loses. So when you compete, always aim to win. But how you win matters. Win by the rules, by working hard, by training diligently. Luck should have no part in it. And whether you win or lose, be gracious, kind, and polite. That doesn’t mean you are okay with losing. I, for one, never want to lose… at anything! But nothing excuses acting up when you do. You go back to the drawing board and do better the next time. I’ll call her Sophia. She is a composite of many young competitors I’ve had the privilege to coach, but if you were there last weekend, you probably saw her. Sophia was having a great sparring match. She was quick, focused, and ahead for most of it. I remember thinking, “She is going to win this.” But her opponent never gave up, and in the final moments she came back and won. I saw the disappointment on Sophia’s face. She had worked so hard for this. Then she did something that made me prouder than any trophy could. She walked across the mat, hugged her opponent, and told her, “That was a great match.” That is a champion. Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” hangs in both of our dojos. It reminds our students that the credit doesn’t belong to the critic, but to the one who is actually in the arena, who tries, who sometimes comes up short, and who, if he fails, “at least fails while daring greatly.” There will always be people on the sidelines with an opinion about how it should have been done. Let them talk. They will never know what Sophia now knows: how it feels to give it your best, how it feels to lose, and how to hold your head up high. I competed for almost three decades, and I lost my share of matches. Every one of them taught me something a win never could: humility, resilience, and attention to the small details that decide a close match. And it isn’t only about Karate. Whether it’s a new job, a new business, or that dream you keep putting off, step in. If you shrink from the challenge, you are worse off than if you had tried and failed. If you tried and failed, you did it, and you can do it again, better. As Henry Ford put it, “There is no disgrace in honest failure; there is disgrace in fearing to fail.” You can’t lose from the bleachers, but you can’t win from there either. I wish for every one of you the courage to step into the arena.

Who You’re Going To Call

FINANCIAL FOCUS: Generosity meets strategy with tax-savvy donations Offered by: Forrest Hough - Edward Jones

G

iving to charity feels good, but understanding the tax benefits can benefit both the charity and you. Whether you donate regularly or are planning your first gift, knowing how charitable tax deductions work can help you make informed decisions while supporting causes you care about. Here are things to consider: The basics: Itemizing vs. standard deduction. To benefit from charitable tax deductions, you need to itemize your deductions on your tax return. Everyone automatically receives a standard deduction, which in 2025 is $31,500 for married couples filing jointly or $15,750 for single filers. You’ll only benefit from itemizing if your total deductions, including charitable gifts, exceed these amounts. For many people, charitable donations alone won’t push them over the standard deduction threshold. However, when combined with other deductible expenses like mortgage interest or state and local taxes, itemizing can make financial sense. If you give regularly but don’t usually exceed the standard deduction, consider “stacking” your donations. Instead of donating $5,000 annually, you might donate $15,750 in one year to exceed the itemization threshold, then take the standard deduction in subsequent years. Ensure your donation qualifies. To claim a deduction, you must give to a qualified charitable organization recognized by the IRS. You can verify an organization’s status on the IRS website or ask the charity for their determination letter. Donations to individuals, even those in need, don’t qualify for tax deductions. Additionally, you can’t receive personal benefits in exchange for your donation. If you give $500 to a charity but receive concert tickets worth $200, your deductible amount is only $300. How much can you deduct? The IRS limits charitable deductions based on your adjusted gross income (AGI). For cash donations to public charities, you can typically deduct up to 60% of your AGI. If you donate stocks or other appreciated assets you’ve held for more than a year, the limit is generally 30% of your AGI. If your donation exceeds these limits in a single year, you can carry forward the unused portion for up to five years. What to donate. Think strategically about what you donate. While cash is easiest, donating appreciated stocks can provide additional tax benefits since you avoid paying capital gains taxes on the investment’s growth. Keep good records. Documentation matters. For donations under $250, a canceled check or receipt works fine. Cash donations of $250 or more need written acknowledgment from the charity. For larger non-cash donations of property exceeding $5,000 in value, the IRS requires a qualified written appraisal. Keep these records with your tax documents in case the IRS requests proof. See IRS Publication No. 526 and No. 561 for information on charitable contributions and valuing donated property. The bottom line: Charitable giving may start with your heart, but understanding the tax implications helps you give more effectively. Work with a tax professional and a financial advisor to develop a giving strategy that aligns with both your charitable goals and financial situation. With thoughtful planning, you can maximize both your impact on causes you care about and the tax benefits you receive. 10 Mistakes People Make When Dying Offered by: Dolan & Associates, P.C.

(Part 3 of 3)

Here is the final segment of the top 10 common mistakes people make when they die. Misunderstand Beneficiary Designations. Beneficiary designations are often used in planning but can have unintended consequences if misused. Beneficiary designations override the instructions left in your will or trust. They also do not allow flexibility for unforeseen changes like a child who predeceases you, which can unintentionally disinherit grandchildren. Failure to Plan for Disability. Another common mistake is failing to plan adequately for a mental disability. Not planning for a possible mental disability can create significant problems for those who will be responsible for taking care of you. Caring for a person with a disability is hard enough. Having to overcome the legal challenges caused by a lack of planning can be overwhelming and also increase the complexity of things following your death. Fail to Discuss Matters with Their Family. Communication is critical to a successful transition upon your disability or death. Failing to openly share information and discuss your plans with your family puts everyone at a disadvantage. Studies have shown there is a 70% chance that you will need care before you die, so have the conversation with your family before it is too late. Sharing openly with your family may be the single largest component in producing a smooth transition upon your disability or death. Don’t let your failed estate planning be the horror story everyone talks about when they get together for coffee. Take the steps necessary to avoid these common mistakes so that things will go smoothly when you die. If you have questions about these issues, you are encouraged to gain more knowledge, by visiting EstatePlansThatWork.com or calling 303-654-0100 to sign up for a no obligation complimentary small group educational workshop. November, A Month to Show Thanks Offered by: John Wilson, B.S., BC-HIS Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center

E

ach November, we celebrate holidays designated for giving thanks. In 1863, during the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the United States instituted Thanksgiving Day, which is now celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November as a federal holiday. Armistice Day, November 11, was initially recognized as a holiday to signify the official end of “The Great War” or World War I, and was celebrated in part as a day of thanksgiving. Later, Veteran’s Day, celebrated on the 11th, was officially recognized as a federal holiday and became a day to remember and celebrate those who have served, or are serving, in the military. November 11th also happens to be the birthdate of my grandfather. My grandmother told me he would refer to hearing aids as a necessary nuisance. His sentiment is shared by many, as nearly everyone with hearing loss would prefer to have their natural hearing back. However, today’s technology has been a blessing for millions of people who would otherwise, to varying degrees, be cut off from society. Hearing loss has an impact on individuals ranging from inconvenience to overwhelming disability. Historically, having a hearing loss often meant a life of poverty and isolation. In Biblical times, those who could not hear and communicate were shunned from society and forced to live a life of poverty begging for alms and the charity of others. Today, hearing technology is available to help individuals with nearly

every type of hearing loss. Research continues to show that treating hearing loss is beneficial to emotional, mental, and physical health. Thanks to modern-day technology, including hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and surgical and medical treatment, those who once would have been completely dependent on charity due to their disability are now able to be self-sufficient. As owner of Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center, I am thankful to have an independent business with access to the best premium hearing aid technology available today. That includes a technology that was introduced just last month, the Omega AI+ family of hearing aids. The technology has incorporated among other things advancements in computer chip production, artificial intelligence for processing, and significant research on the way the human brain process sound to create a technology to replicates how the brain processes sound to improve hearing in noise better than ever before. As always, my family and I are thankful for the continued support of the surrounding community that allows us to serve and work in the community where we live.

ccording to a recent survey by Fidelity, Americans say they plan to have saved an average of more than $1.4 million for retirement. Although reaching $1 million is a very significant milestone, inflation unknowns, rising health care costs and longer lifespans can make $1 million saved for retirement seem inadequate. Retirement saving is less about reaching a specific account balance and more about the income your savings can generate once you stop working. What really matters is whether your savings, combined with other sources like Social Security, can support your lifestyle month after month.

Focus on Closing Your Retirement Income Gap

Many financial professionals recommend that you aim to replace 70%–80% of your preretirement income, though your needs may vary. Retirement income gap refers to the shortfall between the income you expect you’ll need in retirement and the income your savings and other sources (like Social Security) are projected to provide. For example, if you estimate needing $5,000 per month in retirement but your combined income sources are projected to generate $4,000, your retirement income gap would be $1,000 per month. Identifying this gap early allows you to adjust your plan — such as increasing contributions, delaying retirement or revisiting spending assumptions — to help stay on track.

Use a Retirement Needs Calculator

One of the best ways to estimate “how much is enough” is by using a retirement needs calculator. You can find one at https://www. WorthWealthManagement.com/resource-center/calculators. These tools help translate your savings into a projected monthly income and identify potential gaps. Most calculators use a few key assumptions, including:

Let us work our magic in your garden! Weed Spring/Fall Clean Prune Dead head flowers Clean debris Plant + Transplant

• Current age and retirement age • Income and contribution rate • Current savings balance • Expected investment returns • Inflation rate • Estimated Social Security benefits • How long you’ll need income in retirement

By adjusting these inputs, you can see how small changes — like saving 1% more or retiring a year later — can meaningfully impact your future income.

Bringing It All Together Rather than chasing a “magic” number, focus on building a plan that supports your future lifestyle. Regularly reviewing your progress, increasing contributions when possible and using planning tools provided by your plan recordkeeper can help you pursue your goals.

A Season of Gratitude: Giving Thanks by Giving Back Offered by:

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends, reflect on the year, and appreciate the people, opportunities, and experiences that have enriched our lives. It is also a meaningful time to turn gratitude into action by giving back to others. Charitable giving can take many forms. A financial donation to a favorite nonprofit, a contribution to a local food bank, donated clothing or supplies, or simply volunteering your time can make a difference. For small business owners, supporting community organizations can be an especially meaningful way to thank the customers and communities that have supported their success throughout the year. The spirit of giving continues after Thanksgiving with Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2026. This global generosity movement encourages individuals, businesses, and organizations to give back through donations, volunteering, acts of kindness, and community involvement. Consider using Giving Tuesday as an opportunity to support a cause that is meaningful to you or your business. As you consider giving this holiday season, remember that some charitable contributions may also provide tax benefits. Donations to qualified charitable organizations may be deductible for eligible taxpayers, depending on current tax rules and individual circumstances. Proper documentation is essential, so keep receipts, written acknowledgments, and other records related to your contributions. Thanksgiving reminds us that gratitude is not only about recognizing our blessings—it is also about finding ways to share them. Whether you give money, resources, or your time, generosity can strengthen our communities. At Pricewise Business Solutions, we are grateful for the trust our clients place in us throughout the year. If charitable giving is part of your year-end plans, contact us to discuss how your generosity may fit into your overall tax strategy. Happy Thanksgiving from Pricewise Business Solutions!

My Neighbor Loves Her Medicare Plan. Should I Choose It Too?” Offered by: Headwaters Health and Wealth LLC

Your neighbor loves her Medicare plan. Your sister recommends hers. A television commercial sounds irresistible. Social media warns of a “Medicare catastrophe” and urges you to click now. Before reacting, pause. Does the information apply to your coverage—and your healthcare needs? Look past the alarming headlines and seek guidance from trusted, knowledgeable sources. If your insurance company sends a notice that your specific plan is ending, take it seriously. That does not mean Medicare itself is ending. You may have special enrollment and Medigap rights worth exploring. Keep the notice and promptly review your options for coverage beginning January 1, 2027. Even neighbors of the same age can have different needs. One takes two prescriptions; another takes ten. One sees doctors nearby; another relies on specialists across town. One stays home; another spends winters elsewhere. Start with your own doctors, prescriptions, preferred pharmacy, and budget. Ask: • Are my providers in the network, if required? • How are my medications covered? • What might I pay throughout the year? • How would coverage work when I travel? A neighbor’s recommendation can start a conversation. Your circumstances should guide the decision. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period ends December 7 for Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plan changes effective January 1. At Headwaters, we help you understand your choices. Sometimes keeping your plan makes sense. Sometimes a change deserves consideration. Our focus is helping you find a good fit. You don’t need the same plan as someone else. You need coverage that makes sense for you. Call Headwaters at 303-887-8584 for a no-cost, no-obligation review. Lisa Asmussen 303-887-8584 • Lisa@headwatershw.com We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 10 organizations which offer 106 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program(SHIP) to get information on all of your options.

The Freedom to Keep Doing the Things You Love Offered by: Harmony in Motion

Ask yourself a simple question: If your balance, strength, and mobility improved over the next six months, what would you do more of? Would you travel more? Spend more time with your grandchildren? Feel more confident working in the yard, enjoying a walk around the neighborhood, or simply moving through everyday life with greater ease? Most adults aren’t trying to become athletes. They simply want the freedom to continue doing the things they enjoy. As we age, many people begin to notice subtle changes. Stairs feel a little more challenging. Standing up from the floor takes more effort. Balance becomes less certain. Activities that once felt routine require more thought and caution. The good news is that growing older does not automatically mean giving up the activities you love. Maintaining strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility can help support an active and independent lifestyle for years to come. Often, small improvements in movement create meaningful improvements in confidence, comfort, and quality of life. At Harmony in Motion, sessions are designed specifically for adults who want to remain active, independent, and engaged in their daily lives. Using a combination of functional movement, personalized fitness instruction, and Pilates-based techniques, each program is tailored to the individual’s goals, abilities, and lifestyle. Whether the goal is to improve balance, move more comfortably, build strength, reduce the fear of falling, or simply maintain the ability to enjoy life’s everyday activities, the focus is always the same: helping people move with greater confidence and freedom. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is continuing to do the things you love. Have you reviewed your Medicare plan changes for 2027? Offered by:

W

e are in full swing of the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). If you haven’t had a chance to review our Medicare plan changes for 2027, you will want to do that by Dec. 7. Why is AEP so important? Insurance companies reevaluate their Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan designs each year and make changes to those plans effective January 1 of the following year. Some of the plan changes could include increased copays, decreased added benefits, network changes, and even leaving the area all together. During AEP, you will want to look over your plan’s Annual Notice of Changes to see how your plan will differ in 2027. You should make sure your medications will be covered and your medical providers are still in network. If everything looks okay, you don’t have to do anything. You can stay on your plan. If you see a change that you are not too comfortable with, you can look at other options and enroll in a different plan. If your Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan is leaving the area, you have a special opportunity. You can enroll in certain Medigap options with no medical underwriting. This is HUGE! If you have been on a MA plan and have thought about going to Medigap BUT your health didn’t allow you to pass the medical underwriting that comes with a new Medigap, this situation gives you the chance. Remember, only certain Medigap plan options are available in this scenario so please consult an insurance professional for help with this. If your MA plan is leaving the area, you can also choose another MA plan. You do not have to switch to a Medigap plan. I am here to help. If you have questions, please call to arrange a time to go over your thoughts. 720-665-6015 call/text

Don’t be a Turkey - Play Sudoku! S

udoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game. If you play Sudoku daily, you will soon start to see improvements in your concentration and overall brain power. Start a game today and make it a part of your daily brain workout! The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3×3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9×9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if: • Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3×3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 Level: EASY

Many buyers save carefully for a down payment and still get surprised by the cash needed to close. Sellers have numbers to plan for, too, especially when the proceeds from one home will fund the next.

What’s included Closing costs are the fees and expenses that come with finalizing a sale, including lender fees, title services, closing fees, and recording fees. Buyers also typically prepay homeowners insurance and fund an escrow account for future property taxes and insurance. Those aren’t fees for services. They’re the cost of owning the home, collected in advance.

Who pays what

Sometimes a seller agrees to contribute toward a buyer’s costs. Buyers should ask whether that fits their offer and loan. Sellers should ask how it changes what they take home.

Both sides generally pay closing costs, and the split depends on the purchase contract, the loan, and the services used. Buyers often cover loanrelated expenses such as lender and appraisal fees. Sellers may pay for title insurance, closing fees, and agent compensation, which is negotiable and set in a written agreement. In Colorado, the contract spells out who pays which charges.

What Are Closing Costs and Who Pays Them?

Buyers: Expect a Loan Estimate from your lender within three business days of applying. Ask your lender to walk you through the estimated “cash to close,” which is your down payment plus closing costs, minus earnest money already paid and any credits. The Closing Disclosure arrives at least three business days before closing, which leaves time to compare it with your estimate and ask questions. Sellers: Ask for an estimated net proceeds statement showing what remains after the mortgage payoff and selling expenses. That number matters most when you’re budgeting for your next home. The down payment is only one number. Closing costs, credits, and what’s left after a payoff all shape what a move really takes. Your Forever Agent® with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Colorado Real Estate can help you work through those figures early, so you can make decisions with a clearer picture of the costs.
