state planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your family.

Most of these protections are ignored in cookie-cutter, form-driven estate plans. For example….

Mary and Bill were good parents, and their son John turned out to be a great person but a poor money manager. John grew up, married, completed college, and had a good job. But John spent every dime he earned, often before he ever earned it. John had to have the latest things, and thought using a credit card to get them was a better approach than saving for them. If John got a dollar, he spent two.

Bill and Mary sought legal advice before their deaths. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning because their estate was less than the estate tax exemption. She told them to designate John as the beneficiary on all the assets, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice and sought advice from a counselingoriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals.

Their primary objective was to protect John from squandering his inheritance after their deaths. Therefore, Bill and Mary left their assets in trust for John, not directly to him. As a result, John had the help he needed to use his inheritance wisely. They designed a system to help John learn how to properly manage his inheritance so it could support him for the rest of his life. Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Clearly it was.

IRS Freezes Refunds Over Missing Bank Information Offered by:

B

eginning with the 2026 filing season for 2025 tax returns, the IRS has changed how it handles refunds when direct deposit information is missing or incorrect. Instead of automatically issuing a paper refund check, the IRS will freeze the refund and send a CP53E notice requesting updated banking information.

For most taxpayers, this isn’t a big deal. Ninety-three percent of all taxpayers already receive their refunds by direct deposit. But some 5.6 million American households don’t have a checking or savings account.

This transition to direct deposit is proving difficult for them.

Taxpayers who receive a CP53E notice have 30 days to provide or correct their bank account information through their IRS online account.

This may require creating an account and completing identity verification through ID.me. Once the correct banking information is provided, the IRS will release the refund by direct deposit.

If no action is taken within 30 days, the IRS will generally issue a paper refund check after approximately six weeks, potentially delaying receipt of the refund by up to ten weeks. Refunds delayed more than 45 days may qualify for interest payments from the IRS. Taxpayers without bank accounts, internet access, or those who prefer not to provide banking information may call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and request that a paper refund check be issued.

To avoid delays, taxpayers should ensure that the routing and account numbers on their tax returns are accurate and that the bank account name matches the name shown on the tax return.

s a karate instructor, I get to watch students grow in ways that go far beyond punches, kicks, and belts. Every once in a while, a student reminds me exactly why we do what we do at Colorado Karate Club.

This is a story about perseverance.

Evan is the younger of two brothers who train at our school. His older brother, Ian, has always seemed to have a natural ability for karate. Both boys started around the same time, but Ian moved ahead quickly and earned his brown belt several months ago.

Evan’s journey was different.

Being younger, he struggled more. The movements did not come as easily, and while his brother advanced, Evan began to fall behind. He failed one evaluation, then another, then another.

Some days, I wondered if he might give up.

But recently, something changed. It was as if a switch flipped inside him. He started to believe in himself. His effort changed. His focus changed. His attitude changed.

In class, Evan began working harder than I had ever seen. His face would turn red from effort. Sweat would drip down his forehead. He pushed himself through every drill, every stance, every technique. I was silently proud of him.

Not because he had already reached his goal, but because he had found something much more important: work ethic. He had found the courage to keep trying even when the outcome was uncertain. That is a lesson many people never learn.

As rank testing approached, I could tell Evan was nervous. I was nervous too. I wanted him to succeed, but nothing was guaranteed. He would have to earn it.

During his evaluation, he started strong. Then, somewhere in the middle, I saw doubt begin to creep in. Sometimes doubt tries to rob us of the very things we have worked so hard to earn.

As Evan walked by me, flushed and sweating, I quietly told him, “Evan, this is your brown belt. Let’s go. Do your best.” He looked at me but said nothing. Then he went back out and nailed it.

Everything we had worked on for months came together. His movements were sharp, strong, and focused. At that moment, he was not the younger brother trying to catch up. He was a martial artist who had learned to fight through doubt.

When I announced that Evan had earned his brown belt, I kept my face calm, but inside I was filled with pride and joy. The real victory was not the belt. The real victory was that Evan had conquered himself.

He chose not to quit. He chose to work. He chose to earn it. And as his instructor, I could not be prouder.

etting married is a major decision that comes with a financial to-do list that’s arguably more important than choosing a venue or a cake. Talking openly about money can help set you and your partner up for a stronger future.

What financial conversations should I have with my fiancé?

Head into your marriage with honest conversations about money, including these four topics: 1. Discuss how your families handled finances when you were young, whether you’re a spender or saver and what debt you’re willing to take on.

2. Share how much you each earn, spend and save. Discuss assets and debts, including mortgages, student or auto loans and credit card balances; your partner’s debt can become joint debt after marriage.

3. Align on a budget as a couple that reflects the life you want to build – where you’ll live; what you’ll spend on housing, travel and hobbies; and how often you’ll review your finances together.

4. Talk through your goals. Make separate lists of short-, medium- and longterm financial dreams and compare them. You’ll likely find some common ground, and where you don’t, look for ways to compromise. A financial advisor can help.

Should I ask for a prenup?

What financial tasks should we complete after getting married?

Once you’re married, these six tasks deserve attention.

1. Take advantage of the special enrollment period, which typically lasts 30 days after getting married, to update employer benefits such as health insurance. Revisit retirement plan contributions if your combined income has grown.

2. Review insurance coverage. Combining homeowners or renters, auto and umbrella policies can often reduce costs. Make sure you have enough life insurance.

3. Update beneficiaries on insurance policies, retirement plans, investment accounts, bank accounts and real estate.

4. If you change your name, order multiple copies of your marriage certificate.

You’ll need them to update your Social Security card, financial accounts, and employer and medical records.

5. Update your W-4 withholding to reflect your new marital status and ask a tax professional whether filing jointly or separately makes more sense.

6. Work with an attorney to create or update your will, medical directive, and financial and health care powers of attorney. Your estate plan should reflect your new life together.

W

hen I was a kid, two of my favorite things were globes of the world and coins. I loved learning about different countries and cultures around the world and helping my mom count her tips from waitressing at the end of the day. My favorite coin was the 1976 Bicentennial quarter with the drummer on the back. Though I am too young to remember the Bicentennial celebration, I have always loved celebrating Independence Day on the Fourth of July and remembering what it represents. This month the United States of America is celebrating the semiquincentennial or the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The United States is also hosting the majority of the 2026 FIFA World Cup soccer games in cities across the country.

With these two major events coinciding, many news reports and videos have shown individuals from around the world sharing their experiences visiting cities across the United States. People from many foreign countries have expressed how much they enjoyed their experience and their surprise as to how much better the United States and its citizens are compared to how they are portrayed in the news and media of their home country. Among other things they have shared how much they loved the food, how kind and friendly the people are, and how many more options there are for shopping and eating compared to where they come from.

Hearing these experiences reminded me of stories my wife has shared from the time when she volunteered to work as an interpreter for Russian speaking refugees who fled to the United States from Armenia and Azerbaijan after the fall of the Soviet Union. One experience in particular was when the people she was helping walked into a grocery store and were overwhelmed by the number of available items in the store. For the first time in their lives they had options to choose from. Living in the Soviet Union they had never been given a choice of what type of bread or what flavor of jam to buy, if there was even any available.

With so many of the world’s citizens exclaiming their enjoyment, I have been reminded of many individuals I’ve met in both my personal and business life who have come to the United States to build a better life in a land that provided opportunities their home country could not, or would not, provide. Now I would like to share some tidbits of people and their stories, many who fled due to war or other turmoil. There are people all around us who have amazing stories to share about why they are so grateful for this country.

There are my neighbors including one from Ghana whose father was killed in Liberia in the 1980s by the rebel warlord Charles Taylor. Then there is a couple from Ukraine, one whose family fled when the Soviet Union first fell, and the other whose family became refugees at the time

A New GLP-1 Weight Loss Option for Medicare Beneficiaries

New GLP-1 Weight-loss Coverage

any Medicare beneficiaries have been surprised to learn that while GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy® and Zepbound® can be highly effective for weight loss, Medicare has traditionally not covered these meds when prescribed only for obesity. A new program brings changes to that.

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program will allow eligible Medicare beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications used for weight management for just $50 per month for a 30-day supply. The program is currently scheduled to continue through December 31, 2027. To qualify, you must be enrolled in Medicare and have prescription drug coverage through either a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

In general, eligibility includes individuals with a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with certain weight-related health conditions. Your healthcare provider will determine whether you meet the clinical requirements and submit the necessary authorization.

It is important to understand that this program is intended for people seeking treatment for obesity or excess body weight. Medicare beneficiaries who are already receiving GLP-1 medications through Medicare Part D for other approved conditions—such as Type 2 diabetes, certain cardiovascular conditions, or obstructive sleep apnea—are generally not eligible to receive those same medications through the GLP-1 Bridge Program.

This distinction is important because the Bridge Program is designed to expand access for individuals whose weight-loss medications have not previously been covered under Medicare.

[Continued from page 22] of the recent Russia-Ukraine war. During my college days I met a woman from Iran whose family converted to Christianity in the late 1970s and fled to the United States in the early 1980s.

Then there are those impacted by World War II. I became friends with two different German women, one who fled the Russians as they brutally attacked the Eastern front, and another who was raised as one of the Hitler Youth and whose family’s property was confiscated and used as a military outpost, first by the Nazis and later by the Americans. I’ve met multiple men who fought on opposite sides including a man who fought in the German army and a British Royal Air Force pilot who flew a Mosquito in combat against the Germans. On my wall at home in a picture box hangs an origami doll made and gifted to me by a woman from Japan who lost her hearing as a young girl, working for 2 hours every morning before school in a factory manufacturing silk thread for Imperial Japanese Army uniforms.

I befriended a number of Hungarians who fled during the 1956 revolution, including a couple who met each other in a drugstore in Denver after they immigrated. I also knew a Hungarian man who initially stayed during that revolution and later became a Soviet military officer until he finally risked his life and the lives of his family escaping from the Soviet Union in the early 1970s, defecting first to Brazil then finally reaching America.

I’ve spoken with multiple POWs and concentration camp survivors. These include a man who as a young teenager was forced by the Soviets to work in uranium mines in Russia before escaping and making his way to the USA. I’ve had conversations with military

personnel captured by the Germans including a Two-Star Polish General, as well as a woman who as a young girl was imprisoned and brutalized by the Nazis along with her family because her newspaper reporter father opposed Hitler. I was brought to tears when I shook a man’s hand and saw with my own eyes a tattoo of numbers on his forearm. He was a young boy in a concentration camp and was the only member of his family to survive. Then there was the man who with broken English shared how he had been in the South Vietnamese army and survived, barely, 5 years in a reeducation camp after the communists took over.

Others from Vietnam I have known include a farmer who was nearly 60 years old when he and his daughter narrowly escaped Vietnam on a fishing boat as well as members of the Hmong community who became refugees in America because they had aided the US and South Vietnamese during the war. For many years, Vietnamese immigrants remembered the time they finally made it to America so fondly that they incorporated the year their family arrived in the United States into their restaurant names. All of these people became American citizens.

Finally, I want to honor my wife’s grandfathers, one who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, the other who lost his leg on the beach at Normandy; my uncle who I am named after who was killed in Vietnam; and my father-in-law who survived Vietnam, along with all the other men and women who have served to protect the freedom and liberty we enjoy. I am grateful for this country which allowed the child of a welder and a waitress, the step-son of a truck driver and a cake decorator, to establish a successful, independent hearing aid business.

lection season in the United States is a time of profound civic engagement; however, bad actors will take advantage of the Election Season to try and defraud individuals or seek personal information. They will use email, text messages, phone calls, and social media avenues to target their victims.

For example, in January Primary voters in New Hampshire received robotic calls impersonating Joe Biden using an AI-generated voice and spreading misinformation. Election Season Scams can cause these misinterpretations, loss of funds, and loss of sensitive information. Protect yourself, your family and friends from these scams this election season.

Examples of Election Season Scams: There are several methods bad actors may utilize during election season to create deceiving contents for victims and lure them to provide sensitive information. Here are some examples of election season scams.

Donation Scams: Illegitimate donation requests crafted to take advantage of generosity that lead to potential financial fraud.

Voter Registration Scams: Fake voter registration websites designed to capture personal information or sometimes payment for updating your voter registration information.

Fake Surveys: Bad actors will create realistic looking surveys asking for voter preferences, personal information, and/or payment information.

Election Season Scams will be as convincing as ever this year, here are some ways to identify them: • Identify Phishing Email Red Flags. Think twice before interacting with any email requesting sensitive or financial information. Legitimate organizations will not ask for this information via email or phone.

• Verify Sources. If you receive any communication claiming to be an election professional, verify its legitimacy by navigating to the official website or contact a verified phone number.

• Avoid Urgent Requests. Scammers will often use intimidation or urgency to bait victims into making a rushed decision, not in their best interest. We recommend you take your time, thoroughly evaluate requests and never be pressured into making a decision.

• Secure Personal Information. Be cautious about oversharing any personal or sensitive information.

• Educate Yourself About Cyber-Threats. Stay informed on the latest scams and cyber-threats used by fraudsters. More awareness allows you mitigate risks and attacks.

What Should I Do If I May Be a Victim of an Election Season Scam?

1. Stop All Communication. If you are in contact with a scammer, hang up the call and reach out to the intended caller from your end. Once in touch, verify their identity by asking several questions.

2. Report the Incident. You can file a complaint with the FTC on their website. You can also report the incident to CISA. 3. Protect Your Identity. Monitor your financial accounts, credit reports, and any other sensitive information for signs of unauthorized access and activity.

With most accounts, you can place a fraud alert or a credit freeze to prevent further compromise.

4. Document the Incident. Keep any record of communication and documentation related to the scam. This can be extremely useful when reporting the incident and resolving any issues with authorities.
