Finding Your Inner Drive Offered by: Colorado Karate Club
L
ast week, I was watching a group of our students training, their faces showed a combination of joy, strain, and defiance, a good defiance though, the kind you show when faced with a challenge. Seeing this I thought about what really keeps them coming back class after class. One young man, maybe twelve years old, was kicking the punching bag with a determination that lit up the whole dojo. But earlier that day, his mom had shared with me how he sometimes complained about coming to class, saying it was “too hard” or that he’d rather play video games. Yet here he was, pushing through, not for a trophy or a high-five from me, but because something inside him had clicked. It got me reflecting on what true motivation is; what it really means, especially for kids, and how it ties into everything we do here at the dojo. In my years teaching karate, I’ve seen it time and again: the sparkle in a child’s eye when they first start often comes from the fun of it all, the novelty, the friends, earning a new belt. But that’s external stuff, like the thrill of starting a new adventure. True motivation though? That’s different. It’s that inner fire, the personal “why” that drives you to show up, even on the tough days. For kids, it’s about discovering that doing karate isn’t because mom or dad said so, or to impress the instructor, it’s for themselves, for growing stronger in body and mind. I remember my own early days in karate,I wanted to quit because of the constant repetition and difficulty of it all. But my father wouldn’t let me quit; he knew what was best for me, even when I didn’t. Over time, I found my own reason: the satisfaction of mastering a technique, the quiet pride in
pushing past my limits. It wasn’t about belts or tournaments; it was self-development, building discipline to face challenges without complaint, respect for myself by honoring the process, focus to tune out distractions, and the self-confidence from knowing I could overcome anything I set my mind to. That shift from “I have to” to “I want to, for me”, changed everything. For our young students, this is crucial. Kids today face so many pulls, screens, school pressures, friends. But when they find their true motive in karate, magic happens. Take that twelve year old I mentioned: after a few weeks, he said to me, “Sensei, I am practicing at home so I can get faster with my kicks.” Suddenly, he’s not just going through the motions; he’s owning his growth. It builds discipline as they repeat katas, not for praise, but to refine their own skills. They learn respect for themselves and others because they start to value effort and results. They learn to focus on what matters, and their selfconfidence grows when they notice their own progress. And it’s not just the kids though, adults in our classes rediscover this too. Maybe you’re juggling work and family, and karate becomes your space to recharge, not out of obligation, but for personal renewal. The key is asking: Why do I do what I do? If the answer is personal growth, then you’re on the right path. As I wrap up this month’s thoughts, I challenge you: Reflect on your own “why.” For our kids, guiding them to find it prepares them for life beyond the mat. ad actors are constantly evolving their tactics to successfully commit fraud. As we continue to shop online, bad actors find more ways to target our commercial thoughts, creating a scam called Advertisement Fraud. Advertisement Fraud involves bad actors that impersonate reputable companies using fake search engine advertisements. The FBI has issued a warning about these scams due to their increased success in recent years.
How does this fraud work?
The goal of this fraud is to have the individual unknowingly expose sensitive information or to interact with malware via fake software. This starts with bad actors purchasing advertisements, to use later and appear in the internet top search results. When individuals do a search on the internet, they click the link to the fake advertisement in their search results and are taken to an imitation website. Once on the website two things occur: 1. The individual clicks on a link to download software that is malware. 2. The individual exposes their credentials.
Tips for staying safe
There are risks associated with everything we do, and unfortunately, this includes searching the internet. Some best practices for reducing your risks are included below: • Be safe on the internet • Use internet browser address bar to search for the applicable company. • Imitation websites are created to mimic well-known companies, thoroughly review any website before entering any sensitive information. • Utilize an add blocker • Think before you click • Never click a link or open an attachment from any unknown sources. • Hover mouse over URL to review webpage URL and confirm legitimacy • Avoid interacting with high pressure sales • Protect your funds • Do not do business with anyone who asks for money in advance of awarding a prize. • Use a Credit Card to make payments, and do not give direct access to your bank account.
What should I do if I’m a victim of Advertisement Fraud?
1. Stop all communication. If you are in contact with a scammer, cease communication immediately. 2. Report the incident. You can file a complaint with the FTC on their website https://reportfraud.ftc.gov. 3. Protect your identity. Monitor your financial accounts, credit reports, and any other sensitive information for signs of unauthorized access and activity. With most accounts, you can place a fraud alert or a credit freeze to prevent further compromise. 4. Document the incident. Keep any record of communication and documentation related to the scam. This can be extremely useful when reporting the incident and resolving any issues with authorities.

the calendar flips to a new year, millions of Americans pledge to improve their financial lives. But without a concrete plan, those well-intentioned resolutions often fade quickly. Financial goals consistently top the list of New Year’s resolutions. A 2025 CFP Board study shows that financial resolutions are prominent, with saving more money (45%) and reducing debt (32%) ranking among the top three goals. Unfortunately, most resolutions don’t last. A 2023 Forbes Health poll found that over half of people give up on resolutions by the fourmonth mark and only 1% make it the full year. The challenge isn’t a lack of desire for change. People may set the same resolution year after year, revealing a disconnect between intentions and action. Or it may be that they try to tackle too many goals at once, or aim higher than is realistic, setting themselves up for disappointment. Set smart financial goals. Before crafting your action plan, consider which financial priorities matter most to you. If you need ideas, here are some areas where you may want focus in 2026: • Regularly review your financial goals and track progress toward meeting them • Increase your 401(k) contributions or max out your IRA and/or HSA contributions • Pay down debt strategically and negotiate lower interest payments • Build an emergency savings fund of six to 12 months • Save more consistently Be specific. Vague resolutions like “save more money” rarely succeed. Instead, it can help to make goals specific and measurable. For example, rather than making a resolution to “start an emergency fund,” commit to a specific goal, such as, “I will put $100 a month into an emergency fund.” This shift from general to specific transforms wishful thinking into actionable steps. When goals are attainable, it’s easier to track progress and stay motivated. Find an accountability partner. Don’t go it alone. Having someone to check in with can help you stay on track. This could be a spouse, friend or family member who shares similar goals. Consider working with a financial advisor who can help you create a realistic plan, monitor your progress and adjust strategies as needed. A professional can provide expertise and accountability, making it easier to stay on track throughout the year. Start small and build momentum. Rather than overhauling your entire financial life all at once, focus on one or two priority areas. Identify where the largest gap exists between your current situation and where you want to be, then concentrate your energy there. Breaking larger goals into smaller, manageable actions makes them less overwhelming and more achievable. Each small win builds confidence and momentum for tackling the next challenge. The new year offers a fresh start and renewed motivation to improve your financial health. With specific goals, a solid action plan and the right support system, this could be the year your financial resolutions finally stick. IRS Moves Toward All-Electronic Refunds: What You Need to Know

The IRS has announced a major update to how tax refunds will be issued. Beginning soon, the agency will phase out paper refund checks, with only limited exceptions. Most taxpayers will now receive their refunds electronically.
Why the Change?
Paper checks are slower, more expensive to process, and carry greater security risks. Moving to electronic payments helps speed up refunds and aligns with a federal directive requiring agencies to reduce paper-based payments.
What Isn’t Changing
You will still file your tax return the same way you always have. This update only affects how refunds are delivered—not how returns are submitted.
How You’ll Receive Your Refund
Direct deposit remains the fastest, safest way to get your money. Since 93 percent of taxpayers already use direct deposit, most people won’t experience any change at all. If you currently receive paper checks, plan to switch to direct deposit when filing your 2025 return. Just enter your bank’s routing and account number on your tax form. Prefer not to use a traditional bank? Many mobile apps and prepaid debit cards offer routing and account numbers that qualify for direct deposit. The IRS may still issue a paper check if you request a waiver due to lack of access to banking or electronic payment tools. However, paper checks take at least six weeks to process, compared to roughly 21 days for electronic refunds.

One of the most common January surprises with Medicare involves prescription drug costs — especially that first refill of the year. Here’s why it happens. Most Medicare Part D plans have an annual deductible. The maximum deductible for 2026 is set by CMS at $615. If your plan includes one, it resets January 1. Until that deductible is met, you may pay more out of pocket for medications — even if you paid very little in December. The deductible may only apply to some tiers of meds depending on your specific coverage. Once the deductible is satisfied, your costs usually settle back into the familiar copays or coinsurance you expect. This is a normal part of how Part D works and does not mean your plan is wrong or that something went wrong with enrollment. A
common question I am asked by individuals after informing them they have hearing loss is “Isn’t there some sort of surgery or medical procedure to fix my hearing?” For the vast majority, there is currently no medical or surgical treatment to fix hearing loss. The major exception is in cases of conductive hearing loss caused by issues within the outer or middle ear. Most commonly we find individuals have a type of hearing loss, known as sensorineural hearing loss that involves the inner ear, which does not currently have a cure. When I first started in the hearing healthcare field 18 years ago, many medical doctors still called this type of hearing loss “nerve deafness” and many told patients nothing could be done to help, and even warned against wearing hearing aids. During that period of my career, we had to work to re-educate these doctors to help them understand that hearing aids could actually significantly help individuals with sensorineural hearing loss. We now know that wearing hearing aids not only helps individuals to hear and communicate better, it also provides significant long-term benefits to brain health. While there is currently no readily available treatments to cure most hearing loss, there is emerging science in the area of stem cell treatments for inner ear damage. Some research studies have already begun and others are planned in the near future. Reviewing the information currently available on these studies has caused me to come up with many
questions that have yet to be answered. A few of the most pertinent ones are, “What will the risks and side effects be,” “Who will be candidates,” “How long until it will be available to the public,” and “How much will it cost?” Since the research is in its infancy, it is possible no treatment will ever actually be available, or it make take decades to fully develop. Even if this treatment does turn out to be effective, all research to date shows that the negative impacts of hearing loss on the auditory system in the brain cannot be reversed. Wearing hearing aids ensures the auditory system is exercised, which includes stimulating the brain. So even if stem cell treatment eventually becomes a universal solution in the future, my thought is that individuals should preserve their auditory system as much as possible by wearing hearing aids to ensure the best long-term outcomes. When it comes to hearing loss, the first step every individual must take is to start out with an examination of the ear canal, followed by a hearing screening. Thanks to a video otoscope, our patient’s get to see exactly what is in their ear canal, including ear wax. (This is the part where I remind readers not to use Q-tips to clean their ears as it can push wax deeper into the canal and possibly lead to damaging the eardrum.) If a hearing screening indicates a hearing loss is present, a comprehensive evaluation can be performed to determine the type of hearing loss and determine if hearing aids or some other treatment is necessary.
