This ‘mini-project” was to design the interior of the part of the first floor of our own Marvin Hall to create a state-of-the art, technology and productionbased studio suite. The area in concern is approximately 3200 sq.ft. which includes three studios and an alcove space in between the Marvin Shop, three faculty offices, Marvin Shop and the adjacent hallway.

The main focus of this design project is to reconfigure these space to create a new type of studio suite that incorporates a variety of audio-visual technology and to create a student-oriented production/maker-space.

The space aims to explore the utility of studio engagement through its material and spacial selection.

It provides users with a spaced emphasized by its classical Marvin elements in contrast to industrial characteristics.

The Lotus chair should comfortably enable a multitude of seating options. Following unique and beautifully crafted elements which celebrates the form of the user. The lotus chair aims to excite and invoke a want to interact with the chair with the hopes of spreading the many benefits of Lotus seating position.

The Lotus Chair, from initial phase, was centered around design meant to create a comfortable option for those who enjoy sitting in lotus position, while enabling a multitude of seating options.

After concept drawings and parti model, many measurements and calculations were made to create a comfortable and sturdy seating experience.

The model was then sent to the CNC where its components were cut out of ¾” Mulberry hardwood sheets.

Each piece was machine and hand sanded to ensure a smooth finish.

Many pieces needed to be bent into shape.

This was done by either soaking and gluing thin layers of plywood or cutting shallow channels which allow for the wood to flex.

After sanding and finishes, the chair was hand upholstered with removable cushions made of polyurethane.

2D Pattern Exploration My goal is to create a cafe which celebrates the forms and expressions of French BeauxArt architecture through the expressive and dynamic forms of parametric design.

This space should invoke social and cultural motifs which can be observed through things such as materials, patterns, form, and furniture.

Our Purpose of the exploration was to ground a cafe design on the research of Pattern design observable and inspired by the KC Union Station. The space should seat near 100 people and incorporate features such as innovative dividers and Kiosks all inspired by explored pattern design and Piazza design.

In this part of ideation, four patterns were created using inspiration from french beaux-art ornamentation. The patterns were then repeated on a 9x9 pattern grid. This step allows for observation of the pattern and the and negative space created.

Finally, the 3x3 pattern was then modified using lines and shapes created from the patterned grid. In the final stages of parti model, a single pattern was manipulated into a shape which depicts the motion or motif expressed in the modified pattern.

Thus, a 3d form is created in which pattern lines become the structure of a space which embraces the motif of the modified pattern. These spaces were then studied for their natural lighting and grouping qualities.

In French, the term beaux-arts (BOZE-ar) translates to fine arts or beautiful arts. The Beaux-Arts “style” originated from France, based on ideas taught at the legendary L’École des Beaux Arts (The School of Fine Arts), one of the oldest and most esteemed schools of architecture and design in Paris.

The period spanning the late 19th century and turn of the 20th century was a time of great industrial growth throughout the world. French ideas of beauty were brought to the United States by American architects fortunate enough to have studied at the only internationally known school of architecture, L’École des Beaux Arts.

In this project, we were instructed to build on campus temporary housing for guest speakers and professors could stay while in town.

In the beginning stages of the project, we were told to design a single pod that can be easily manufactured which could comfortably house someone while staying at ku. I started out by finding inspiration for the project as a whole.

The inspiration I drew from was terrariums, and the idea of a suitable yet visually elegant system of organic matter.

The form of a terrarium is mostly glass with framing holding it all together. This brought me to the idea of making a space which wraps a terrarium like a room. Initially I wanted the glass portion to be a relaxing space, however with the exceedingly small living requirements, which proved to be impossible. This created a new problem of my design which was ho I would combine function, relaxation, and productiveness.

For this project, we were instructed to design a space inspired by a religion of choice. This religion would then be researched and studied for its history, art, and relevant architecture.

After selecting Rastafari as my religion of interest, I researched important vocabulary and ideas relating to the Rastafari religion. These words were used as inspiration for abstract water color compositions based on the extensive research completed for the religious terminologies.

In this step of conceptualization, 3D parti models were created to express the religious terminologies in a spacious object. These models were studied for their spacious and lighting qualities.

A finalized 3d model was made to study lighting qualities of the space. This model was a exploration of form and space crated for a beach pavilion which aimed to bring people together in a comfortable sculptural space which took inspiration from the Akete ceremonial drum used in Rastafarian grounding rituals.

REO HOUSE

My goal in the REO House is to design a space in which reflection, expression, and organization can limitlessly fulfilled and explored through the implementation of smart home technology systems and seamless natural design.

Our objective was to design a sustainable home for a city lot which also seeks to address a current social challenge.

The home should promote environmental sustainability, social sustainability, and economic sustainability. The home should respond to its surrounding environment and its users by applying principles of sustainability and human factors.
