“Villa Istrinsky” is located in Istrinsky district, north west of Moscow. Exposure to the south sunlight and west wind protection are the key climate-elements which affects the building’s figure ground alongside with the building lot’s shape. Vastly influenced by the international “modern” architecture era; an open-plan building divided by vertical elements overlooks the side-yard to the south which would expose the building to the south sunlight.

Combination of custom-designed interior elements and technological production with respect to the tight timing and budget lead us to a successfully-managed project with high quality.

Vista Group Office Renovation Project

Scenographic Architecture While the office is designed very functional based, to use the maximum area possible, the architecture is vastly influenced by music. It is a scenographic architecture where the customers are planned to go through a hierarchy of spaces in a way to provoke their curiosity and help them conceive the “world of tea.

Renovation Project Typology: Residential Location: Zaferanieh, Tehran Project’s Link, Clickable

Demolition Diagram

The original 40 years old apartment was excessively ornamented with disordered architectural elements. The challenge of developing an architecture identity started by removing such ornamental elements on the ceiling and walls on one hand and breaking the spaces scale by opening up the inner spaces on the other hand.

Axonometric Perspective; Modified Interior Zaferanieh Renovation project’s main goal was to enhance “living space” quality, by transformation of the existing architecturally-mediocre apartment. Through such process, balancing quality, budge and clients demands was of the dilemmas of construction and design management.

Bar-code Facade The stripe-patterned facade reminds the one-dimensional bar-codes which systematically represent data by varying the widths and spacings of parallel lines. Metaphorically expressing, the building’s stripe-patterned envelope, contains a series of office and bank spaces on one hand and a combination of concepts which has been evolved through the process of design on the other hand. The mentioned concepts are woven to embody the fabric of the building, as a consequence the architecture needs to be looked into in order to be well-conceived.

Modular Facade The modular elements in the facade follow the steel grid and can create different patterns depending on the interior and exterior criteria. The mentioned fragments are compatible with different materials which can be used depending on every specific context.

Material Compatibility

As the bank has different branches in different cities, the grid facade is compatible with diverse construction techniques and materials depending on the contextual parameters.

The 2-story building was redesigned and renovated to host the cafe’. While the irregular-shape of the building made the task very challenging, the project’s planning was done in a way to “regulate” the space in the best possible manner. On the ground floor the steep angle of the building was dedicated to kitchen and staff WC and the more regulated front to the cafe’ entrance. Considering the area limits, the kitchen’s work-flow was designed to use the space the most efficient possible.

Professional Experience

2012 - Intern Architect at AS. Architecture Studio, Paris “AS. Architecture-Studio, was established in Paris in 1973, and later established new branches in Beijing and Shanghai. The studio consists of over 100 architects and it is led under leadership of 12 partner architects. Some very notable projects designed by AS. Architecture-Studio are European Parliament in collaboration with Valente in Strasbourg (1999- 1991), Institute of the Arab World in collaboration with Jean Nouvel, Lezenes and Soria in Paris (1987-1981).

The Green City in Zürich

AS. Architecture Studio, Paris First Prize in The International Competition Mixed-use Office Building Zürich, Switzerland The two blocks of mixed-use offices, are part of a green sustainable town to be built close to Zürich. Inspired by the green Switzerland valley`s, the idea was to continue the existing green path - which was proposed by the master plan - through the building. The paths and greenery in different levels, and “pocket gardens” on the facades helped with the idea of green valley.

Design Development Technical Design Facade Detail Development Form Assessment Making Physical Model Final Presentation Preparation

Interior design based on the furniture setting was one of the design`s targets of the attention. The offices were designed based on three setting types; open office, semiopen office and closed office. Here on this page, one of the several interior proposals is illustrated.

7th Floor Plan

7th Floor

The facades were studied and designed in a way to avoid energy waste. “Pocket gardens” and “shadow boxes” are of the interesting features of the glazing facades. Moreover the facades which are facing the highway are protected by vibrating panels for acoustic reasons. All technical parameters of the projects are studied in tight collaboration with engineers and landscape architects.

Considering the topography, the vertical distribution of functions was one of the very dominant aspects of the project. This feature is notable both in the design of the landscape and each individual building. Diagram on the right: The quality of space and facilities has direct relevance with the floor’s level. So that the quality of the allocated cell is dependant on the level of crime, duration of imprisonment and tenant’s behaviour during the detention.

The courtyards between the penitentiary units.

The in-between open public spaces. One of the concept of the projects was to eliminate the social barrier between the prison and society. To do so, some public spaces are designed as intermediate spaces.

”Honourable Mentioned by the faculty and unanimous vote of the competition jurors for a compelling design concept reinforced by a convincing design process with unyielding commitment to achieve an innovative design solution.” Atlanta, is one of the cities in the U.S, formed alongside railway. Similar to many other metropolitans, it is shaped of fragmented neighbourhoods, which we looked to as ceramic tiles. These tiles are broken off by physical and psychological boundaries, called frictional borders. Our proposal was targeted at enhancing the tiles (neighbourhoods) to create self-sufficient tiles and in a city scale, to link these tiles to smoothen the frictional borders between them. This strategy was taught to bring segregated elements of the city together to create a harmonious ceramic pattern. The irregular neighbourhood alongside West Marietta St NW is the consequent of fast-pace city sprawl. The neighbourhood consists of industrial and residential buildings, jail, retail, art galleries and many other buildings with different functions scattered around.

The strategy is to utilize positive features of the site along with our proposal to balance negative features as it is demonstrated in the abstractive diagrams. On the diagram on the right, the positive spaces in terms of quality, both the existing and proposed, are illustrated in pulled up spots and pulled down spots stand for negative-existing spaces. Aiming self-sufficiency, the rehabilitation projects, are thought to be repeated in all individual tiles according to their current condition. Finally by easing the accessibility of different tiles, the ultimate aim is to create a harmonious, cohesive community.

Italy, Lambrate, Canegrate A Historic Building Preservation & Interior Design Instructors: Prof. Stefano della Torre, Prof. Gisella Veronese, Prof. Massimiliano Nocchi Palazzo Visconti Castelli, a 18th century palace, is located in Canegrate, a town in northwest of Milan. Originally the palace was owned by Visconti family, one of the most powerful families in Lombardia province. The palace was never built complete as what it was planned to be. Later on in 20th century the building was turned into a warehouse of a fabric factory. In 1930s the abandoned building became occupied by some poor people. Even though the building is quite important to the town and is very rich in artistic features, it is still an old abandoned edifice to be renovated. Before

According to our study on Canegrate, the town lacks a cultural centre. Considering the location and history of the palace, it is proposed to host cultural activities. Some spaces as proposed to be permanent exposition galleries to remind visitors of the history of the building and town. The rental offices and temporary exhibition are planned to provide a part of budget, to maintain the building. Ground Floor Function Layout Preserved Walls Walls to be Demolished Walls to be Built

Elevator as a steel-framed core, the staircase is supported by beams between core and cage.

Inner skin is prefabricated plywood, surrounded by “cage system” and concrete foundation.

The outer reflective glass shell, reflects the environment.

New staircase roles: - Giving new identity to the building. - Providing vertical accessibility with minor demolition. - The reflective envelope reflects the town’s skyline. - Panorama spot on the top overviews the town. - The diversity of forms inside, creates a new space experience for the visitors.

Urban Rehabilitation

Italy, Cormano Safety Oriented Revitalization Instructors: Prof. Clara Cardia, Nathalie Kakpo, Umberto Nicolini, Carolina Cruz This project aimed to study the current urban condition of a small town in north of Milan, and to provide a rehabilitation proposal. The theoretical backbone of this project was based on Jane Jacob’s urban theories, safety researches by the American architect, Oscar Newman and C.Ray Jeffery, the American criminologist. The group of about 50 students was divided to five teams, each team was responsible to study a specific area and an urban issue. Number of pedestrians per 15 minutes

The third is the urban infrastructure, these are the two main highways, the provincial road and the railroad. These infrastructures have such a high impact on the structure of Cormano that they can be seen as dividing barriers. In combination with the pedestrianflows, it becomes clear where the barriers are broken.

The first is the density of the pedestrianflows, which is shown with the colors red, orange and yellow. The shapes indicate accordingly high, medium and low density of the pedestrians. The six pedestrian surveymaps were used as an underlayer to make a general interpretation of the flows. Through the use of this method, the most important “walkways” and “gatherings” become apparent. The second visual are the flowgenerators, these can be divided into two catagories. Normal flowgenerators, such as trainstations, supermarkets, restaurants, bars and other commercial activities, are used mainly throughout the whole day. The second type is spot-flowgenerator, these are religion and educational facilities. These generators are used on specific times of the day and also on specific days of the week. They generate high-density flows but only occasionally.

Interpretation of the Pedestrian Flow In the second phase the information derived from the first phase was progressed and interpreted. COM

There are also two mini cores, one in the north between the railroad and the highway and one in the southwest along the provincial road. The northern mini core does not have a strong connection with the central core, which would have been expected, but with the northwestern core. The southwestern mini core does not have a strong connection with the rest of Cormano. Which points out a certain level of self sustainablity.

Morphology Map In the next phase by studying the interpretation maps, more detailed maps were derived and some objectives were drawn to be reached by means of strategies. For reaching the strategies, urban interventions were proposed.

Above - Local urban enhancement by rehabilitating the surrounding of west of Cormano. The last phase of the project includes the proposals aiming to improve urban condition in the most critical regions. Our team proposed two main problematic streets and a vast green area on west of Cormano, to be re-purposed and improved.

Architecture Design Studio Italy, Milan, Rho Fiera Mass Housing Estates Rehabilitation Instructors: Prof. Remo Dorigatti

At the time this project was underway, Expo 2015 of Milan was planned to be held by the theme, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. In contrast to the previous expos, 2015 expo was planned to be more humanistic, said professor Stefano Boeri one of the architects in charge of the expo 2015. Every country will have almost the same lot to present one or some of its agricultural productions and these productions can be the means to bring up issues such as the importance of energy in today’s world, revitalization of old agriculture methods and etc. One of the goals of this project was to translate national culture to an abstractive-contemporary architecture. 30%

In order to best represent culture and architecture of t Iran, we chose Rafsanjan, a city located geographically in arid-hot deserts of Kerman Province. Since pistachio is a crucial production of the region, we started studying it. This nut is particularly interesting; firstly it can survive in the sever climate of desert, secondly it has had a very important role in the life of inhabitant’s of Rafsanjan. And lastly, pistachio’s fields are nowadays very good means for desert reclamation.

Step-irrigation

Qanat - A system to convey water to cities innovated by Persians.

Clay-vase Irrigation

The next step after studying the climate and choosing the production was to study more deeply the cultivation procedure and visually codify and interpret some important related issues. Finding and efficiently using water is the key to live in the desert. Here are some innovative irrigation systems in Rafsanjan : Usually 1/4 of the farmlands is dedicated to the sapling trees, 2/4 to the real-productive trees and the remaining to the old trees, over 25 years old. The latter mentioned trees are supposed to be transferred with new trees which are brought up in green houses.

According to Persian legends, the Pistachio nut was one of the “holy foods” brought to the Earth by Adam.

It is said that the Sasanide king ordered to store pistachio in the castles of Khorasan as an energizing edible in case the castles were surrounded by the enemies.

In the cold winter nights farmers put on fires in the fields to prevent the trees from glaciating.

According to Persian legends, the Pistachio nut was one of the “holy foods” brought to the Earth by Adam.

One male tree produces enough pollen for eight to twelve female trees to be fertilized.

The Queen of Sheb, as legend tells, once decreed the pistachio a royal food and she went so far as to forbid peasants from growing it.

Landscape Design Studio

Italy, Milano, Rho Fiera Botanic-urban Space Revitalization Instructors: Prof.Andreas Kipar, Piera Chiupani The area close to the site of the expo 2015 of Milan, is the site of this project. By finding the urban spaces’ problems and potentials, we proposed a strategical urban intervention, to enhance the local city life. This area which is located on the outskirts of Milan, is fragmented to many parcels. We proposed a green space planted by different plants from all over the world which supports the expo 2015 of Milan, and also provides the space to connect the different fragmented residential areas.

The map above illustrates the segregation of the three residential areas. They can be more connect- ed by means of the public space in between them.

The red line indicates the boundary of the public green space and the four green circles, show critical spots which connect the residential neighborhoods to the proposed public green space.

International Workshop MIAW Urban Re-appropriation Instructor: Silja Tillner

Milano International Architectural Workshop (MIAW2010) was a charette held under supervision of eight architects from around the world. The theme of the workshop was Re-appropriation. Half of the workshop was dedicated to the lectures given by the architects, and the rest to the projects done by teams of about 20 students, working under instruction of one of the architects. I was in the team lead by Austrian architect, Silja Tillner, whose well-known projects are her rehabilitation urban projects in Vienna. We started studying Rubattino, an area close to Leonardo da Vinci’s campus of Politecnico di Milano. The aim was to find the problems of the area and propose a strategy to “re-appropriate” it.

Sustainable Tourism in Lota, Chile

Canada, Toronto, IWB (Institute without Boundary Urban Revitalization Instructors: Prof.Andreas Kipar, Piera Chiupani “Working together in international, interdisciplinary teams, 9 groups of students tackled 9 different design problems, all centred around the common theme of developing innovative, sustainable tourist attractions for the city of Lota, a city in Chile which was hit by an earthquake. The results were an incredible array of creative design concepts that ranged from a historic church renovation to the construction of an art-themed boutique hotel on the Plaza de Armas in central Lota.” * Our team was working on a sport centre which was aimed to contribute to Lota’s cultural, urban and financial development. *IWB`s Official Website

Coal Inspiration: Lota is historically a mining town. Considering the importance of coal for the people’s lives in Lota, we found its form inspiring to the stadium’s architecture.

Reflective Facets: The facade of the building is designed in a way to remind the coal form and on the other hand to reflect the town and the plaza in front of the stadium. As the crowd approaches the stadium people can see their reflection in the facade.

Community Engagement: Since the stadium is surrounded by long wall, the walls where planned to partially contain commercial banners and the rest would be used as graffiti frescoes drew by youth, whereas graffiti is very common in Lota.

Inspiring Colors: Lota’s colorful architecture is very inspiring and is reflected in the stadium’s architecture by colorful fabrics as the second skin of the facade, underneath the transparent, glass facade.

Changing Metropolitan Spaces

ANCB New Approaches to Urban Agriculture Instructors: Prof.Andreas Kipar, Prof. Andrea Rolando, Prof. Fabrizio Leoni, Piera Chiuippani, Giorgio Limonta “Urban growth has marginalized agriculture in the metropolitan context. Recently, however, the attention of planning, urban and landscape design has been drawn to the specific typology of “urban agriculture” and it’s economic, spatial, ecological and social roles — especially in Berlin with it’s abundance of open space. This workshop aims at exploring a new way to deal with uncertain space, using agriculture as a means to rehabilitate urban landscape. The study area is the Landschaftspark Herzberge.” * The master plan has divided the whole site to five areas. Our team was supposed to work on the area on the south of Landschaftspark Herzberge, which currently houses the children’s hospital. This area was planned to be designed as a Co-housing community.” * * Official Website of ANCB

A co-housing community, is a type of social community composed of private homes supplemented by shared facilities. The community is planned, owned and managed by the residents, who also share activities which may include cooking, dining, child care, gardening, and governance of the community.

Co-housing Grid

Co-housing Area

By means of the existing building, axis of the street which can create the green space’s path and an imaginative grid as the guideline, the spaces were defined.

Our proposal consists of three main elements : - The hospital building which hosts cubic elements which are supposed to be used as residential units of co-housing. - New residential unites which are supposed to provide the inhabitants with social facilities and private houses. - The green space which is designed in a way to smooth- en the limit between the green and the building.

New residential units open the building to the greenery. Both residential units and green natural stripes follow the guideline grid. The greenery is supposed to climb the building in some parts to vanish the strong border between the building and the greenery.

Bird eye View of The Children Hospital The master plan of Landschaftspark Herzberge proposes the demolition of children hospital in oder to construct a new building to house the co-housing community, however we proposed a re-purposed program not to demolish the building. In the above schematic view, the white cubic forms stand for the added elements which would be designed to change the image of the building and house the private spaces.

View from the Entrance toward North The open space which surrounded the building is the gateway to the north of Landschaftspark Herzberge. The visitors pass through a path surrounded by green stripes, to direct the visitors to the heart of the park, through a collaboration with one of the other teams we took the advantage of a tall landmark which is located in the middle of the park. The landmark is expected to attract the visitors to pass all the way to it. The landmark could be seen above, in the background in gray.

After The Project

Spain, Barcelona, Ciutat Meridiana Mass Housing Estates Rehabilitation Instructors: Prof. Marc Brossa From 1945 to 1965 new urbanizing development started in many European cities. Planned housing estates and spontaneous marginal urbanization development could be recognized during this period. This unprecedented phenomena had negative impacts on the periphery of many European cities, which remain until today. The second edition of Eco-rehabilitation workshop faced the challenge of revitalization of three of the most remarkable episodes of mass housing estates in Barcelona’s metropolitan area: Ciutat Meridiana, Bon Pastor and Polígon Sud-Oest del Besòs. Our team was working on a rehabilitation project on Ciutat Meridiana or Font Magues housing estate, which is one of the mass housing estates built between 1950’s and 1970’s in Barcelona, with the aim of providing new dwellings to the large immigrant population and thus attempt to eradicate the shanties. Ciutat Meridiana was built on 1964 on private sector investment, in a valley located on northeastern fringe between Barcelona and Montcada Reixac. This area has previously been planned to host a cemetery. Nowadays the quality of life in this area is quite poor due to the topography, weather and soil condition. But It’s location as a gateway to Barcelona and the national park of Barcelona, right beside conjunction of north-south and west-east highways, is a positive potentials which could be employed to rehabilitate the area.
