Following a period of sustained development and consolidation at AMAG publications, the LONG BOOKS will bring together a unique selection of projects that establish new paradigms in architecture. With a young and irreverent conceptual graphic language, the 1000 numbered copies of each title of AMAG LONG BOOKS COLLECTION will document works with different scales and formal contexts that extend the boundaries of architectural expression.

THE ARTIFICE WITHIN - THE REPETITION THE ORDER THE PROPORTION The present built work - a manufactoring textile facility in northern Portugal - has been co–authored by Pedro Guedes de Oliveira and André Campos. I have known both architects for some time and Pedro in particular. André nurses a group of third year students next to my unit at the ULP (Lusófona Porto), having own work and also still collaborating with Eduardo Souto de Moura. Pedro also collaborates with Eduardo Souto de Moura and sometime back several built structures by him have caught over time my attention with the same ease that we take a lunch break and sip a glass of wine every so often. I recently follow on the students from André. I like to interact with professional matters with Pedro, I guess since we first met sometime back. In this instance, I had the chance to see graphic material of precise adaptations to new functions: The case of two containers finely crafted to house an abode – if that can be said in this manner! The adaptation of a former rural grain storage facility also into domestic use, without faltering its built essence. In this country it is seldom that we see manufactoring facilities treated with the care and precision their products often display. Such is the case of this manufacturing plant and its complementary program turned into a kind of a kind of classical technological masterpiece, i would suggest, in what rythm, proportion, detailing are concerned. A single double height shell contains in itself the various functions: double height volumes for storage and manufactoring; single height for social facilities, bureaucratic environment and client/guest welcoming. Thus the manufactoring plant requires storage space with double height volumes so that fork lifts can display their abilities to sort out and store goods with ease and speed; the main production space also on a double height volume is surrounded by staff facilities, storage and on an upper level the social rooms and archives for used designed sets. At ground level, the entrance lobby leads to on one of the sides to the bureaucratic wing facing outside and the administration quarter, while on the upper level, the display rooms to cater for client visitors; room for the staff ‘formation’, finance department, etc What strikes me is that this complex is organized in a swift clean manner with reccurence to inteligent artifice.

Two levels of accomodation on a normal height that serve/confront for the more volumous manufactoring storage/working spaces – a kind of inverted ‘F’ with the focus on the tip of the longitudinal branch. If ‘god lies in the details’ according to Mies (the unit and its repetitive ability) and way to say that ’the appearance of the body’ can be in a way referred back to the times of Greek divinities – as per Indra K McEwen in Socrates Ancestor - where they wrap themselves in ‘kosmos’, in order to go dancing, the suggestion is that the ordering of the dance is a reflection of their adornment, or second skin, and vice-versa. When one comes before a well balanced and detailed staircase - as in the entrance lobby of this facility - that usually means the remainder of the attention to design detail endure. The artifice in the very fine detailing of the external skin and of the interior of this manufactoring facility is quite stricking and very well thought out as is exquisite the way technology allowed for an appearance of the body (order) that gives a sense of a plinth and a piano nobile immaculatelly crafted with the same frame with their anchors well aligned with interior ground floor false ceilings and upper roof finish. With this inteligent balancing detailing artifice the built complex gives an impression of smooth kind of diluted order. André and Pedro GdO have achieved through a series of apparently simple choices – a repetitive module of window detail that allows for well proportioned multiplication and the exception (the reception entrance) and a careful choice of interior spanning beams and their cared layout that are even able to accomodate effortlessly the mentioned ‘encased’ staircase. The ‘dividing lines’ a term which I have used time and again and taken from Yehuda Safran’s dictum are rendered possible in these times of the technological curtain walls or massless skins and corresponding interiors because ‘today, a stone facade can made in steel, brick, concrete, silk-screened glass’ (ESdM) And referring back to Maxwell, who belongs in my patrimony of pertinent observations and reasoning of the classic versus the modern …how to sustain values in a valueless world?...(RM) ... ‘...Instead of a fixed, rigid mind operated by a set of preconceived ideas, our uncertain mind is curious, interested, reflective and malleable. Being uncertain is a good thing (RM) This uncertainty that Robert Maxwell hinted at in the early 80’s, the uncertainty of rendering meaning to a delicate curtain wall is only possible through the inteligent contemporary play of function and meaning – repetition and proportion - for As the concept of sin has weakened, the concept of blame has been strengthned (RM)

JOSÉ PAULO DOS SANTOS

With this assertive interventtion very rich in proportion and rythm the architects have proved that only through the exquisite manipulation of detail the artcraft remains present and silent - as good deeds should. ESdM - Eduardo Souto de Moura RM - Robert Maxwell

FÁBRICA EM BARCELOS

BARCELOS, PORTUGAL 2016 - 2022

CLIENT A family textile manufacturing company, leader in the production of outdoor knitwear that relies on the concept of being a design factory, continuously researching new materials, finishes and accessories for some of the most renowned international brands and which is committed to ensuring precision in its methods and speed in its production process. PLACE A vast plot of land, in an area with a steep slope located between the national road 205 and the Cávado river, with surroundings characterised by forests, agricultural land and predominantly textile-based industrial facilities, as well as detached and semi-detached homes, mainly two-storeys-high. A set of adjoined buildings, built in different time periods and with different materials, which have been expanded and altered to accompany the growth and the increase in production of the factory/industrial unit itself make the existing structure not very coherent and unified in terms of architectural language. PROGRAMME -Reorganising and bringing programmatic clarity to the entire factory, meeting the company’s current business needs; -Giving the existing buildings and those to be expanded a modern and uniform image; -Expanding the area for manufacturing support and bringing it closer to its respective textile activity area, both spatially and visually; -Upgrading and enlarging the supporting facilities for employees; -Creating the necessary conditions for the administrative, commercial and customer support areas, given the need and the potential for growth that has been observed, to be able to make use of a larger and more suitable space, with better spatial conditions, namely with regard to the relationship with the external green space, which has gradually been improved;

-The design of a new façade to match the new image of the company; -Defining a new main entrance, on the façade of the building linked to the extension located in the corner next to the main entrance of the grounds - pedestrian and automotive; -Changing the façade of this existing building in order to create better working conditions (thermal and environmental), as well as changing the image of the building so that it becomes the secondary façade, of a more anonymous nature, instead of a second main façade. MATERIALS Metal pillars and beams following a modular rhythm serving as the basis for the whole organisation, compartmentalisation and architectural language of the new building. Concrete slabs for the ground floor, composite profiled steel decking with a concrete topping for the first floor and the roof. Partition walls composed of dry structures that are easy and quick to build, allowing for flexibility in interior organisation. Aluminium frames in a natural anodised finish; glass with solar protection and interior integration of adjustable blinds, which –together with a vertical modular anodised aluminium structure, independent of the whole– characterise the new architectural image of the building. Corrugated aluminium sheets, perforated in the openings, fully covering the outer façade of the existing building, in order to simplify and detract from the architectural image. INTEGRATION A sober architecture with traits and materials that are shared by the existing structures and the neighbouring industrial buildings, that is adapted to the topography and fits within the urban context.

-Reorganising and defining the exterior space, enhancing the existing green areas and managing the access routes– pedestrians, cars and trucks. PROPOSAL -The construction of a new building, attached to the existing building, more specifically to the southern façade, that responds to the programmatic and spatial objectives of the client with regard to the enlargement of the commercial, administrative and client support areas.
