CENTRO COORDENADOR DE TRANSPORTES

CHAVES, PORTUGAL 2016 - 2021

The implementation area is located north of the city of Chaves, near the city border, with a direct connection to the A24 highway.

The zone destined to the new Transportation Coordinating Centre is located in an area that is still under development, given that a portion of the Detailed Plan of Fonte do Leite has not yet been executed: to the East, there is an already urbanised and partially completed area, although all the other constructions foreseen in the Plan remain to be finished; to the North, the axis 3 - Via Distribuidora, and to the South, the Flaviense Stadium.

Given these premises and without any major references to draw from, we suggest the creation of a building/ canopy, anonymous, in a metallic structure, that tries to provide an answer to a specific programme; in short, we tried to build a part of the city in which the existing fragments –the stadium, the existing buildings, the structure of the transport centre and the new green space– had meaning and a sense of scale between them.

It was our concern to establish a relationship/dialogue with the existing topography, creating a connection between the various elevations of the land, allowing direct access to the complex from different levels in order to facilitate/respond to the operational outline as envisaged by the developer.

On the basis of the aforementioned conditions, we suggested the creation of a new volume/canopy, which aims to give structure and organisation to the grounds. A rectangular roof in a metal structure containing the entire programme: 7 partially covered embarkation/ disembarkation platforms, a volume in exposed concrete holding 2 offices, sanitary installations and a storage/technical area.

The roof, approximately 65m long, 11m wide and 4.5m high, is supported by a regular and linear structure composed of metallic pillars.

Separate from the metallic structure, we have suggested the creation of a volume clad in bushhammered concrete on the outside and in exposed concrete block on the inside, where the programme is distributed: 2 offices, sanitary installations and a storage/technical area.

The access to the volume is guaranteed by two separate entrances: one that allows access to the office area and another with independent access to the sanitary installations; this option allows the two programmes to be fully autonomous.

The new green space/urban park was designed with the idea of serving not only the Transport Centre but also the city of Chaves.

If that happens, and I would like it to happen, it would mean that the project was functional and successful...
