35 years of experience NIRAS’ experience with offshore wind dates back to the very first steps the emerging wind industry made into the sea at Vindeby in Denmark in 1991, where we provided geotechnical advice for the design of the foundations for that pioneering project. Since then we have followed our clients into new and exciting markets internationally and worked with them to realise some of the largest and most complex projects yet delivered. We have lost count of the MW of projects we have advised upon on in one capacity or another but it is certainly more than 50 GW and increasing all the time.

We are multidisciplinary Our team comprises internationally recognised specialists in engineering and the environment.

Working closely together, we advise clients on the identification and evaluation of potential sites and the development of technically and commercially feasible design concepts. We identify and obtain all necessary licences and permits and undertake environmental impact assessment and associated technical studies required to obtain them. Once consented, we work with clients to develop detailed designs and assist with, or manage on their behalf, the construction and installation process. We have developed innovative approaches to the monitoring of operational wind farms, and at the end of their lifespan we advise on decommissioning. We also advise on the design and construction of the essential ancillary infrastructure including ports and harbour facilities for the offshore wind farms.

Permitting and Consenting Obtaining the necessary permits and consents to construct and operate offshore wind farms can be a complex and time consuming task. In some jurisdictions the permits and consents required may be unclear, particularly in places without established offshore industries.

Furthermore, the process of obtaining the necessary permits, consents and licences to operate may be ill-defined.

NIRAS has decades of experience in defining and obtaining the permits, consents required to construct and operate offshore wind farms and their associated infrastructure.

Working closely with clients We work closely with clients to ensure that any mitigation and conditions attached to permits ­and consents are as reasonable, proportionate and relevant as possible.

Once the necessary permits and consents have been obtained we can assist our clients with the implementation and execution of any requirements in the permits, including monitoring requirements.

Worldwide permits and consents Although the legal requirements for the permits and consents required may differ from place to place, we follow established procedures to define the relevant processes and applications required, to undertake consultations, prepare supporting documentation and to prepare and submit applications on behalf of our clients.

Stromar Floating Offshore Wind Farm Stromar is part of the ScotWind program and will see up to 1 GW of floating offshore wind installed off NE Scotland. NIRAS is responsible for Habitats Regulations Appraisal (HRA), including key assessment for marine ornithology and related expert consenting advice to the developer. The NIRAS team is additionally completing assessments relating to protected sites for marine mammals, habitats and migratory fish.

Environmental Impact Assessment

NIRAS has international experience in EIA and ESIA management. Our technical experts also support clients who are managing EIA/ESIA them­selves. We have an exceptional track record of success in EIA and have led or contributed to the assessment of some of the largest projects yet brought forward.

Throughout the EIA/ESIA process we monitor and manage risks to the programme and budget and maintain an active dialogue with the wider project team, including technical specialists.

Mitigation and monitoring plans We work closely with clients to ensure that any mitigation proposed is relevant, proportionate and that is technically and commercially feasible.

Once the application is approved we assist our clients to develop and implement detailed mitigation and monitoring plans effectively and efficiently.

EIA/ESIA in new and emerging markets For projects being delivered in new and emerging markets there may be a requirement

to go beyond the EIA requirements of the local consenting regime. Lenders or funders of projects may have additional requirements and NIRAS is experienced in ESIA required to satisfy international standards such as IFC. Thor Offshore Wind Farm Thor is Denmark’s largest offshore wind project to date and will be powered by 72 14 MW wind turbines.

A multidisciplinary team of NIRAS experts are conducting the environmental impact assessment for the offshore facilities of the 1,000 MW Thor Offshore Wind Farm. Once built, Thor will deliver renewable energy to the equivalent of more than one million homes, making it the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark.

A team of NIRAS experts are preparing the environmental impact assessment (EIA) on behalf of RWE for the offshore facilities of the Thor Offshore Wind Farm, which will be built in the Danish North Sea approximately 22 km off the west coast of Jutland. The EIA documents the impacts relating to the construction, operation and decommissioning of the 1,000 MW wind farm and considers all elements of the offshore installation, including the wind turbines, an offshore substation and the network of submarine cables.

Engineering Services NIRAS offers engineering expertise and design consultancy from the early conceptual phase through to final detailed design. Detailed design of foundations for an offshore wind farm in the Taiwan Strait where conditions are extreme. The strait is frequently affected by typhoons, earthquakes and liquefaction of soil. Heavy rain transports sand from the mountains into the sea, constantly changing the seabed.

In connection with the Carbon Trust programme, NIRAS introduced a damping system in order to reduce fatigue and increase the life span of steel monopoles.

•

Design of monopiles with bolted connections between monopile and transition piece as well as integrated monopiles, where the transition piece is omitted. Both designs are combined with an optimised installation and operation procedure.

A parametric study of various floater concepts has been performed in connection with a 10 MW turbine. The knowledge obtained in the project can be used to consider different floater concepts in early design phase where choice of concept has significant impact on the cost.

NIRAS has been among the very first to provide hydrodynamic loads to a detailed concrete foundation design based on CFD calculations, certified by a leading certification agency. This task focused on verification of the model, extracting only relevant results and inclusion of influence of the irregularity of the waves.

Monopile foundation For more than two–decades NIRAS has developed and designed Monopile and jacket type of foundations for wind turbines. We have participated in several research projects related to offshore energy, in order to investigate and improve the concept into a low cost foundation

for offshore wind turbines. Furthermore, NIRAS has developed and continuously improved the design for related issues such as scour protection systems secondary steel, cathodic protection etc.

Jacket foundation NIRAS has extensive experience developing and designing jacket foundations. We participate in several research projects within the offshore energy sector, in order to investigate and improve the concept into a low cost foundation for offshore wind turbines and as support structure for topsides at marginal oil & gas fields. We have carried out extensive research within the areas of both geotechnical and structural design as well as developing low cost fabrication and installation methods.

Bucket foundation Bucket Foundations are an alternative to the more traditional Monopile foundations. The LEEDCO Windfarm in Lake Erie is a unique wind energy project – the first freshwater wind farm in North America. The Project will use the innovative Mono Bucket as the turbine foundation, a technology that will reduce both costs and

environmental impacts for the offshore wind industry.

Floating foundation Floating wind farms have the potential to significantly increase the sea area available for offshore wind farms, especially in countries with limited shallow waters. Locating wind farms farther offshore can also reduce visual pollution and reach stronger and more consistent winds.

Commercial floating wind turbines are mostly at the early phase of development, with several single turbine prototypes having been installed since 2007.

Secondary Steel Design Solutions Secondary components of a Wind Turbine Foundation typically consists of the platforms (external access- and work platform, and 2 – 4 internal platforms), boat landing and access ladder. Secondary structures are designed to fulfil employer’s requirement, and further following international as well as regional standards. The design is optimised, considering requirements to installation, operation & maintenance, health & safety etc.

NIRAS have a strong experience with detailed design of secondary components, with solutions in steel, aluminum and concrete. During the design and drafting work of secondary components we mainly use Autodesk Inventor® for 3D modelling and ANSYS Mechanical® for verification of structural capacity.

External Platforms Solutions External platforms are most often made as a steel beam solution with grating or steel plates to form the platform floor. Sandwich structures, as seen in ship hulls, or concrete solutions, can also be applied. External platforms must meet different sets of requirements depending on the

selected solution. Size of the laydown area and the elevation of the platform are key factors for design and layout. NIRAS have experience with both concrete- and steel platforms. We have also designed waterline platforms without a laydown area, allowing for multiple access points to the foundations.

Boat landing & Access Systems Varied design of boat landing systems can provide for easy access to the wind turbines. NIRAS have designed many systems over the years allowing for multiple access points to the foundations including traditional two-fender systems allowing the service vessel to land directly up to the shaft of the foundation. Furthermore, we have experience with systems allowing for landing to components installed at the waterline, whether it is an external access platform or an ice cone.

Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm Kriegers Flak is the largest Offshore Wind Farm in Denmark and is located in a low tide area of the Baltic Sea between Denmark, Sweden and Germany. The area has been singled out by the 3 countries for production of renewable energy, placing the offshore windfarm in a 132 km2 area 15-40 km from the shore.

Internal Platforms Internal platforms serve different purposes: working platforms for bolt tensioning, cable hang-off support, air-tightening, components support etc. Typically, three platforms are used for the internal structure: Upper work platform, lower work platform (or switchgear platform) and airtight platform. However, special requirements by the owner may result in other solutions. We have designed internal platforms in different materials i.e. steel, aluminum and fiberglass.

Electrical- and Cable Installation Interface Electrical outfitting’s such as for power supply to davit crane, foghorns, illumination, etc. is typically an integrated part of the secondary structure design. The electrical interface has been managed at NIRAS to govern the best design for the foundations. Furthermore, cable installation scenarios have been analysed to optimize design of cable routing and prepare the internal platforms for cable pull-in. Specifications for cable protection systems to protect the cable in the critical zone from it exits the structure to it is safely trenched into the seabed is also provided.

Other Components NIRAS is working closely together with suppliers to ensure the best possible solutions of secondary items implemented. This includes cable protection systems, temporary tents for weather protection of transition piece top, handrails, corrosion systems etc. Solutions for handrails can in steel, aluminum or fiberglass.

Offshore Cable Systems NIRAS provides planning, analysis, design and support during installation of cable systems such as inter-array cables and export cables. The installation studies are based on fully dynamic analysis and gives the client detailed knowledge of allowable sea states for safe operations.

Cable Protection Systems NIRAS has performed several designs for Cable Protection Systems (CPS) for offshore wind farms.

The work has included dynamic cable studies to verify the layout of the system, as well as testing of existing CPS. NIRAS have also designed new steel/polymer/rubber components for reinstatement of centralizers, which have slipped out of the cable pull-in bellmouth.

ClawloksTM The NIRAS ClawloksTM design, has been testing in full scale for demonstration of the installation procedure, including required pull-in force and diver disconnection procedure.

Short CPS Solutions The Cable Protection System comprises of a modular system in half shelf. Therefore, the CPS can be tailored to any requested length and also be installed/adjusted at the cable on the cable lay vessel during installation.

London Array Cable Protection System repair London Array (LA) phase 1 comprises of 175 turbines. A cable protection system (CPS) has been installed to protect the sea cables from the environmental loadings. The CPS consists of several smaller components. The CPS is attached to the foundation by the nose cone centralizer entering the bell-mouth at the J-tubes. In addition, gripper pads have been used to lock the CPS to the cables. NIRAS designed a reinforcement of the system, and provided a full FEA analysis and undertook cable stiffness testing of the system.

ClawloksTM solution for the Chestnut project The ClawloksTM is a robust and simple support and latching system for flexible risers, umbilicals and cables. The system has typically been used on floating production vessels and turret systems, where it provides structural interface between the subsea riser and the I/J-tube.

The connection is diver less and automatic and is established during pull-in of the riser. The cable with the male part and bend stiffener can be disconnected by use of topside operated hydraulic system, or alternatively, by use of ROV with bolt drive system.

The system consists of a female and a male part. The female part is attached to the I/J-tube by welded or flanged connection. The male part supports the bend stiffener. The cable is routed loosely through the male part and bend stiffener. The riser end termination can be locked to the male part during pull-in. Both female and male parts are robust steel assemblies with sufficient material for handling the cable loads, and the assembly has reserve capacity for abrasion and corrosion.

Rønne Harbour, Denmark As an important part of securing a continuously sustainable asset to the community of Bornholm, Port of Rønne is expanding in order to future-proof the port facilities to accommodate port calls from the increasing ship sizes and for the expanding offshore wind trade. Almost 98% of all passenger and transportation of goods to and from Bornholm takes place through the Port of Rønne.

Phase 1 of the expansion comprises of a multipurpose quay and heavy duty load out quay both prepared for a future water depth of 13 metres and approximately 15ha of reclaimed land. The expansion is protected from south by a reventment and for the overall protection of the new harbour basin, a new breakwater has been constructed. As design consultant for the port expansion, NIRAS’ involvement now extends to Phase 2 of the expansion works.

The estimated construction value of this key energy facility is £165 m.

The quay comprises a combi wall of 2.5 m diameter tubular piles and AZ 38-700N sheet piles supported by a 2.5 m diameter anchor wall.

Longer travel distance requires longer weather windows with wind and waves below a certain limit. This reduces the probability to access the wind farm. Trianel Wind Farm, Borkum Evaluation and improvement of existing scour protection Evaluation of the existing scour protection and design of new improved scour protection concept for the substructure at the Trianel offshore wind farm. Scope of work for the delivered services by NIRAS was divided into three steps whereof the two first were followed up by a gate meeting to discuss and make decision for the final phase.

Because the wind farm have been in service since 2011, information about the actual hydrographic conditions could be used to simulate closely how the scouring develops under different conditions, at different times of year.

Based on these simulations, NIRAS proposed a scour protection involving a wide graded single layer of crushed rocks.

Due to the complex design of the structure NIRAS used the CFD analysis to determine the ideal properties of the rocks. The ideal rock material consisted of several rocks sizes where the biggest was heavy enough to stay at the seabed and at the smallest small enough to prevent winnowing.

Decommissioning At the end of their operational life offshore wind farms will need to be decommissioned and this is typically a condition on their licence to operate. Decommissioning is, however, a complex process requiring specialist deconstruction techniques, environmental protection procedures and waste disposal.
