A bicycle factory in Copenhagen

The topic of a vertical factory in the urban context has been chosen out of its up-to-dateness that the population in big cities is constantly increasing and therefore require new solutions on how to deal with the growing demand for living and work places and the reduction of space at the same time. Globalization is a main factor that manufacturer are able to relocate their production to areas with low wages and labor costs, as well as cheap land prices and less taxes.

The Danish capital Copenhagen is considered by many to be the worldwide capital of cycling. In Copenhagen, the infrastructure for cycling is very well developed. Copenhagen residents love cycling, because no matter where you are, and no matter what time of the year it is: almost always you see cyclists in the streetscape

Indeed the situation is changing; wages are rising, the transportation costs get higher and the prices for energy drop in our regions. In addition to that, there is definitely a change in the mind of the consumer happening right now. He emphasizes the importance of locally produced goods. These are all reasons for a local production near to the consumer and his workplace. Ideally we will find a way to bring the factory back in the heart of the city where they have been for a long time. With new ways of clean production and modern work environments, a factory does not have to be a symbol for the old days, but rather an approach on how working and living will go side by side in a modern city of today.

Although cycling is the cheapest means of transport, Copenhageners love their bikes, no matter how high their income. In Copenhagen there are many families in the middle class with children who do not own a car. They ride their bikes to work, take their children to kindergarten and many students go by bike to the university. The bike has a long and rich history and it is hard to imagine a world without bikes There are a variety of known variants, the basic elements have remained the same until today. The bike is a very personal machine, which brings a certain freedom with it. There is a bike for every need and an incredible number of modification options. For this reason, you can put together your very own, very personal bike in the bicycle factory and test it on site.

Interdisciplinary factory planning

The company Kaldewei plans for their factory premises in the city Ahlen a factory extension, as well as a new, representative administration building. The factory extension takes place in the inventory and presents us with some challenges that need to be solved. A sophisticated façade design plays an important role here. At the same time, all processes for making the shower trays, wash basins and bathtubs must function smoothly. The new administration building, on the other hand, will be realized on an open space on Beckumer Strasse and will be the new face of the company, taking on the aspect of corporate architecture. The company site of KALDEWEI is located in Ahlen, a small town in the Westphalian Münsterland. The factory, which has grown over a period of almost 100 years to an area of ​​now 81,000 m², is centrally located in the city of Ahlen. The architectural concept is based on a detailed analysis of the company Kaldewei and the current production site in Ahlen. The peculiarity and challenge is that the entire company property is centrally located in Ahlen, which is rather uncommon for a production site. However, it can be explained by the fact that over the last 100 years a steady growth has taken place and so Kaldewei has grown simultaneously with the place and the existing historical bond was further strengthened.

This integration with the city forms an excellent basis for a good quality in the workplace. The new administrative building takes up the topic of “identity to the outside” and will be implemented on the existing open space east of the historic brick building. The design is based on the requirements of Kaldewei, because it consists of three structures that simultaneously reflect the different levels of expansion. In the first step, a representative new main building is built, which is designed for 200 employees. In its typology it is based on an L-shaped structure. This is arranged on the property so that it opens to the street space and the stock. The result is a public space in front of the building, which can be seen as a connecting element between the areas of Kaldewei itself, but also between Kaldewei and the public space of the city. The expansion of production has a more functional approach and deals with the topic of “growth inwards”, but without losing any of its design aspirations and, above all, with its façade to further address development. The materials used in the structure and façade are limited to steel and glass, thus directly relating to the materials, enamel and glass used in the enameling process at Kaldewei, whose combination is responsible for the unique surface of their products.

Urban masterplan for Haaren

The planning area lies between Praguer Ring and the Worm and covers the area around the street Wurmbenden. The approximately 300,000 m² area includes two separate detached houses from the 1960s, an allotment garden, a small agricultural area, a 35,000 m² glass production facility and various heterogeneous businesses. It can be stated that the planning area does not allow any internal development due to the roads which usually end in dead-end streets and therefore do not have any internal urban planning references. Furthermore, the prominent position on the worm, one of the few flowing waters of Aachen, is paid no attention by the worm-endings. In addition, the area has neither a relation to Haarener city center nor the industrial park Grüner Weg. The planning area stands alone in the urban planning context and forms no apparent connection to the surrounding areas. Objectives of the urban development of the planning area: • To draw the line between Gewerbe Grüner Weg and Wurmbenden. • To link the area of worm ​​ ends with hair more closely. • To create a special traffic-calmed residential area for all user groups. • Adapted to demographic change to create at

tractive living with different types of housing. To found an identity-creating and vitalizing city park in the planning area, which has an impact on the surrounding residential and core areas. The commercial areas on the worm ends form a wedge between hair and the small residential areas in the planning area. Therefore, we decided to relocate the now obsolete trade to the Prague Ring in order to create a clear border between the western industrial estate and the planning area. Furthermore, the development on the Prague ring acts as a protection against the heavy traffic of the Prague ring. On the other side of the plan area is the worm. Topographically, this also acts as a boundary to the planning area. However, since we want to create a connection to the nearby city center of Haaren, we let the adjacent fire department park flow over the worm, so that it comes to the worm end, which is our new collection road.

Robo-factory

There are numerous manufacturing companies out there with a variety of facade metal sheet panels for your building. The Robo-factory gives you the opportunity to create your individualized facade panels. We are even able to manufacture small amounts of metal panel sheets because our production is almost fully automated by using the newest and best technology. Robots play the biggest part in the automation and gives us the possibility to give you competitive prices. The Robo-factory is greenfield factory concept with an emphasis on the optimization of the production process. Therefore I choose a comb structure for the building which can be extended through addition of modules. The module itself plays an important role in the design process. From the module size to the structure everything refers to one another. It is an integral approach. The building appearance consists of metal sheet panels as an element facade. The inside is divided into three zones. The top one is the serving zone, where all the materials are supplied and the dressing rooms for the workers. The middle zone is more of a communication zone with office cubes for research and customer contact. The bottom zone is a production area. The raw material go through different stations where

they get cut, welded, moulded and painted and as a last step packed and stored. The transport system inside the factory is an overhead conveyer system, therefore the floor is free of material and workers can move and also maintain the machines without any danger. Robots play a very important part in this factory. Everything is automated to optimize the production process, the time efficiency and the cost reduction. They also do the heavy and harmful tasks like lifting the heavy panels and painting them while they are exposed to the paint particles. So the collaboration between human and robot can even evolve further with benefits on both sides. Flexibility and Variability are the two keywords that drive this concept in every single aspect. From the small details to overall idea. So the factory is able to produce every kind of form and color of a metal sheet panel and react to changing market situations by just adding more production modules, which can easily attached to the existing architecture because of its simple but effective joint connections. The module size of 14.4 m x 14.4 metres ensures a large pillar free open floor space, therefore various uses are possible. This adaptability makes the factory future ready.

Cascina Cucina

The place At the first inspection of the plan area, I discovered two very exciting places for me, which offer great potential to either work in stock or to design something completely new. On the one hand, there is an old shed hall at the lower end of the upper part of the park. There is currently no direct access to the park and the place seems more like a barrier than a fortification. The other place, which I have selected for my processing, is located near the Cascina Le Vallere, where the park administration is currently located. There are also public events and training sessions. At the same time, however, my chosen property also borders on the Mitsubishi site, which can once again be seen as a sort of barrier to access to the park. The concept My concept is about strengthening the entrances to the park and better linking the two parts of the park. The Urban Park in the north is connected by a new route with the southern, agricultural embossed part and thus gives a completely new feeling to experience the park. The strengthening of the entrances in the south takes place through a conversion of the shed hall to a market hall. The farmers from the region deliver fresh fruit and vegetables and offer visitors a great experience in

a covered and daily, or several times a week, market, in order to strengthen their regional roots. So there is a traceability of the production channels and it is a conscious decision to buy fair food, in which one supports the local farmers. The strengthening of the entrance to the west takes place through a newly planned building called “Cascina Cucina”. It is a cafe and restaurant and also offers the possibility to buy fresh products in small quantities in the own farm shop. It is a place of interaction and also to take a break. Here, city dwellers meet farmers, people who grow their own things in a community garden, and visitors to the park. The façade of the building picks up on the environment and shows with a clearly structured perforated facade to the north, where visitors can enter the building. The west facade, on the other hand, takes a back seat and only occasionally shows openings where they are needed. The East and South façade opens generously to the outside area, on which many chairs and tables of the cafe stand and also an in-house herb garden can be found. Furthermore, the view plays an important role, which one has from the restaurant on the first floor. The eye is deliberately directed either towards the urban park or the other side onto the open field.

Dance Loft

New building of a dance loft with foyer, studio stage, four small dance halls, training rooms and secondary functions as a self-sufficient building block in the immediate vicinity of the Ludwig Forum. The elongated floor plan extends along Jülicher Straße and opens on one side with a representative foyer to the Ludwig Forum. On the other hand, it offers a dancers’ foyer, which acts as a lounge for participants before and after events. The structure of the building follows the basic idea of ​​the house-in-the-house principle, thus creating a circulating traffic zone that not only connects the two inner structures, but also houses the undisguised building services. The technoid style, which is also represented by the open structure, alludes to the original definition of a loft. By inserting the traffic zones in the Vierendeelstützen the design principle is still exaggerated. It provides a clear separation of traffic and residence zones and makes them perceptible through various details in everyday life. Here are different lights, as well as joints in the floor to call. The, formed by lamellae, sunscreen opens a dialogue

between inside and outside. It not only reduces the sun’s rays, but also ensures that the otherwise completely transparent body is preserved from unwanted insights without disturbing the view. The heavily elemented construction means that some parts of the building, including not only the supporting structure but also floor elements, can be delivered prefabricated to the construction site and on-site assembly is simplified. The dance Loft offers various spaces to perform dancing performances, training facilities, break rooms and dressing rooms and cafes as well. So the students can freely move inside the building and get in contact with each other. It is also located near a major bus stop, so visitors will automatically get a glance of the building, so their interest gets awakened. The architecture itself speaks a very clear and simple language, it does not hide its industrial character, in fact the focus is on the visible construction. That contrast between the raw materials and the very fine movements of a dancer get even more emphasized.
