Guatemala harvests the best Christmas trees, the Abies Gesto Abies Guatemalensis, popularly known as the fir tree.

This tree is part of the decorations used to decorate houses this season. Its smell, pyramidal shape, and the perfect color of its branches make it a preferred species. It is harvested in nine departments: Huehuetenango, Totonicapán, Chimaltenango, Quiché, Quetzaltenango, Chiquimula, San Marcos, Jalapa, and Zacapa.

Preservation

Since 1997, institutions such as the National Council of Protected Areas (Conap), the National Forest Institute (Inab), the Nature Protection Division of the National Civil Police, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office have been protecting this species.

As part of these actions, the National Strategy for the Conservation of the fir tree 2019-2028 and the Regulation on Management of Plantations and AreasProducing fir tree Seed (Governmental Agreement No. 1982014) regulate the registration of plantations, seed-producing areas, and nurseries, as well as the use and transport of products and by-products of these species.
