Announcements Volunteer Fair The Student Affairs office will host a volunteer fair on Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Campus Center Mall.

Voter registration now available online

SoCal residents responsible for ‘Innocence of Muslims’

As of Sept. 19, Californians can register to vote online at www.sos.ca.gov. Currently more than one-quarter of eligible Californians are not registered to vote.

State officials are hoping that the more convenient system will encourage citizens, especially young people, to vote. When a person registers the system searches the DMV database for their information, such as a drivers license or state identification cards. The voter can use an electronic image of their signature to verify the form. Within the first 18 hours of the system being in effect almost 10,000 people registered. Some are concerned that the new system is susceptible to hacking or could crash if too many people register last minute as the Oct. 22 registration deadline approaches.

The three men who were primarily responsible for “Innocence of Muslims,” the anti-Islam film the sparked riots in Egypt, Libya and around the Arab world, are residents of Southern California. Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, a Coptic Christian living in Cerritos, Calif., said that he wrote the script for the film while in federal prison for bank fraud. He also reportedly paid the actors, rented the facilities and hired script consultants, saying that he was making a movie called “Desert Warrior,” and adventure film about ancient Egyptians. Steve Klein, a resident of Hemet, Calif. was a script consultant for the film. He also is a “close friend” of a well-known, anti-Islam cleric. Joseph Nassralla, operator of Media for Christ and resident of Duarte, Calif., who rented out the charity’s offices for the making of the film.

Young immigrants not eligible for health care

Japan plans to be Nuclear-free by 2030’s

Deferred Action has allowed young immigrants who met certain requirements to avoid deportation, but they are not eligible for Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program. Some officials in Washington say that Deferred Action was never meant to make immigrants applicable for government subsidies for health care. The restrictions may also have been a moneysaving policy, considering that subsidies are expected to cost $5,300 per person in 2014. The Pew Research Center estimates the 1.7 million immigrants could apply for Deferred Action.

Low-income immigrants, whose jobs do not provide health benefits, will have to find others ways to pay for health.

The Japanese government has announced its intention of being nuclear-free by the 2030s. Last year’s Fukushima nuclear power complex disaster and forced evacuation of more than 160,000 people brought the dangers of nuclear power to the public eye. Backlash from the reopening of two nuclear power plants has forced the Japanese government to reevaluate their stance on nuclear power. The government has given existing nuclear power plants 40 years of operation before they must shut down and has prohibited the construction of new plants.

Nuclear plants previously made up nearly a third of Japan’s power generation. Business leaders have warned that the decision will raise energy prices for businesses and consumers, as well as increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Media briefed on Prop. 30 CSU and community colleges take efforts to inform students about Proposition 30.

A

statewide media teleconference to educate student journalists on the effects of state budget cuts to public education is scheduled for this afternoon. Initiated by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, the discussion will include analysis of the possible outcomes of the success or failure of Proposition 30, Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax initiative in the Nov. 6 ballot.

Federal law states that it is illegal to use government resources for political campaign. Paige Dorr, the CCCCO’s director of communications, said that the teleconference is a way to inform student journalists without taking a stance in the proposition itself.

“As a government agency the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office cannot take a specific position of support for ballot initiatives nor can we advocate for them.”

“We can, however, let the public know about the implications of the passage or failure of Prop.

30 and Prop. 38,” Dorr said.

The call is scheduled for 3 p.m. and people will be listening in from an estimated 30 different community colleges. Erik Skinner, CCC acting chancellor will be the primary presenter, with

help from, Dan Troy, CCC vice chancellor for college finance and facilities planning and Rich Copenhagen, president of the CCC student senate.

They have invited student editors and reporters and faculty advisers from community college student newspapers to participate. According to a media advisory from the CCCCO, the teleconference call will include discussion about the current state of the community colleges system, results of the fall budget survey and how the passage or failure of Prop. 30 will affect community colleges statewide.

If Prop. 30 fails, CCC will face mid-year budget cuts of $338 million in addition to the $809 million that has been cut since 2008.

CCC is the largest community college system in the nation, but schools are offering nearly 25 percent fewer courses than they were in 2008. Enrollment has also decreased from 2.9 million students during the 2008-09 school year to 2.4 million students this year.

If voters pass Prop. 30 the California Community College system is expected to receive $210 million in additional funding. The money, however is only a portion of the $961 million currently owed to community colleges.

In addition, 165-180 classes could be added to Citrus College’s schedule, according to Susan Keith, board of trustees vice president. Assuming that there are 30 students in each class, that would amount to 6000 new opportunities for students, Although community colleges

stand to benefit from the passage of Prop. 30 they can’t openly promote it. However, they are taking efforts to inform voters, said David Tate, editor-in-chief of the Citrus College Clarion.

“If you read student newspapers around you’ll see editorials that are going behind it, in support of it. You’ll see budget proposals that look drastically different with Prop. 30 passing and failing . . . Schools aren’t explicitly saying that they back Prop. 30, but they all support it,” Tate said.

Meanwhile, California State University officials are taking a bolder approach.

CSU is sending a letter to every applicant stating that the number of students who will be accepted depends on whether or not Prop.

30 passes. It also informs applicants that CSU will not be sending out acceptance or rejection letters until November instead of their usual October dates in 2008.

CSU trustees have also said that if Prop. 30 fails they will be raising tuition by 5 percent approximately $7500. If, however, Prop. 30 is passed, CSU will rescind a previous tuition hike of 9 percent and reimburse students for the difference.

Community college staff and students and CSU applicants will be waiting for the Nov. 6 results.

Board refutes allegations

In response to claims of meetings violations, the five-member board say they did nothing wrong by awarding the district superintendent a long term-contract.

he Citrus College board of trustees has officially maintained that they engaged in no wrongdoing by rewarding district superintendent/president Geraldine M. Perri a long-term, four-year raise during the entity’s July 17 meeting.

Gil Aguirre, an open-government advocate from San Dimas, believed otherwise. He sent each of the board’s five trustees a letter alleging that they violated several provisions of the Ralph M. Brown Act—California’s version of open meeting laws that govern meeting of public officials.

The most grievous of accusations Aguirre made says the board discussed Perri’s raise during the closed session portion of a June 19 meeting. Aguirre interprets this to be a violation of California Government Code Section 54957, which states “Closed sessions held pursuant to this subdivision shall not include discussion or action on proposed compensation.”

However, the board sent a reply letter to Aguirre saying they were in full compliance with the law.

While the letter does not refute

Aguirre’s claim that Perri’s raise was discussed in closed session, it does say that Aguirre is incorrectly interpreting the wording of the law.

“The board letter” said Aguirre “Fails to recognize that Government Code Section 54957.6 does authorize legislative bodies to meet in closed session . . . with respect to the negotiation of compensation.”

But trustee Edward Ortell, who voted against the raise along with trustee Gary Woods, conceded that transparency had become an issue for the board.

“The larger question is not can these things be done in secret session, but should they be done,” Ortell said, “That’s the public policy question.”

Aguirre also said the demands he makes in his letter stem from that lack of transparency.

“What’s happening is [the board] worked hard to keep things out of the view of the public,” Aguirre said. “I’m not here to tell the voters who they should have on the board, but they should know what their publicly elected officials are doing.”

“The public is being told that [Perri] is making $215,000, but that’s not the case at all, the presi-

dent makes closer to $300,000. By the time you factor in the stipends and the housing allowance and the uncashed sick pay, she may be making over $300,000.”

Trustee Gary Woods, who voted against the raise with Ortell, also expressed concern over the president’s growing paycheck.

“In today’s economy and its uncertainty, I do not believe that it is prudent to award this type of compensation of taxpayer’s money,” Woods said. He also mentioned that Constance Carroll, chancellor of the San Diego Community College District turned down a similar pay raise.

Either way, Aguirre says he believes that he will be prepared to move forward with litigation after meeting with his legal counsel.

Board of trustees president Joanne Montgomery said she had not viewed the response letter yet and could not comment on the issue.

fter a lengthy search, Citrus College has hired a new vice president of student services. Arvid Spor brings with him an optimistic attitude for Citrus’ future along with 13 years of community college experience from his tenure at El Camino College.

Although the role of vice president is a new one for Spor, he is sparing no expense to get Citrus and its students on the track to success. He plans to apply for federal grants that could potentially bring in $1 million by fall 2014.

He also is looking forward to working closely with student government representatives.

“I liked working with the Associated Students,” Spor said.

“What I made a point to do was work with and stand by students at various meetings, so I could show my support in any way possible.”

His goals include improving

student success and completion rates in required courses, facilitating transfer to desired schools and raising the number of students graduating from Citrus with degrees. His focus is on the Student Success Initiative, which requires students to have an educational plan before or within the first year of their college experience.

“The whole thing is geared toward the College Completion Act, how can we increase graduation rates, how can we increase transfer rates and what are the steps we need to take to get there,” Spor said.

Before coming to Citrus in August, Spor was dean of enrollment services and dean of community advancement at El Camino College. He provided leadership at the Compton Center and chaired and co-chaired many committees, including the El Camino College accreditation self-study.

“Dr. Spor is an excellent choice to lead the many programs, departments and offices comprising Citrus College’s Student Services Division,” said Joanne Montgomery, president of the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees. “He brings with him a wealth of experience in community college administration and has a strong leadership background.

We are confident that he will be an asset as the college moves toward the future. ” Spor earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and business from Oregon State University after attending Portland Community College. He was granted a mas-

ter’s degree in counseling from CSU Long Beach and earned his educational doctorate in educational leadership from USC. His dissertation was titled “Persistence Among Low Income Community College Students.”

Geraldine M. Perri, Ph. D., superintendent/president of Citrus College, said in a memo that Spor’s impressive educational and professional background made him the ideal candidate for the job of vice president of student services.

“In this new position, Dr. Spor will manage a variety of college offices and departments that are crucial to providing students with a quality education,” she said.

“His extensive knowledge and experience will be extremely valuable as the college continues to deliver services that help students achieve success, complete college and meet their educational goals.”

Spor has high hopes for Citrus. He said that his mission is

to encourage faculty and students to work together more closely, improve the campus experience for everyone, and actively listen to what students and staff have to say.

“Any place I have ever gone, I find it is always best to listen,” Spor said, “It is important to get to know the place, the people, the students and find out why things are the way they are.”

“I hope that he will be able to understand student needs and delegate issues concerning us in the right way,” said Sarah Regan 20-year-old student, “Especially because he is handling services for the students.”

Protester makes an unpopular stand Alyssa Martin

hen religious advocate Paul Mitchell took up his metaphorical orange box and megaphone and came to Citrus College, the views he expressed urged students to take a side and speak out.

Mitchell held a sign with the words “Go to hell” at the top and “Or repent” at the bottom in bright red, print. It also detailed a list of people, who he believes, the Bible condemned as sinners. The opposite side of the sign quoted Romans 6:23, saying “For the wages of sin is death.”

Mitchell proclaimed his views boldly, and Citrus students responded in kind. Those who agreed with his beliefs argued as vehemently as those who opposed them. While Glendora police on site advised students to ignore him, they had trouble doing so due, no doubt, to his choice of contentious words, such as “girlie men,” and “sluts.”

“Does the Bible tell me that when I come out here and proclaim the definitions of sin to a culture and give that culture the answer that I’m going to be received and everybody’s going to like me? Oh no. No; the opposite is true....What the Bible tells me is there’s a good possibility I’m going to get hurt,” Mitchell said.

The president of the Christian Club, John Mendez, began speaking about his idea of “true Christianity” and urged students to attend a Christian Club meeting if

they wanted to hear more.

As the clashing opinions rose to a crescendo, one student did the unexpected: he defended Mitchell.

Nursing major, Will Brown said that everything Mitchell was saying was true and everyone, including himself, needed to ask for forgiveness from God. “Everybody deserves death, after the death you have the love of Christ. I’m depending on grace and mercy...I face hell every day...

Every day I ask for forgiveness,” Brown said.

Whether or not the Citrus College students were changed by Mitchell’s sign and speeches, the sight of so many of their fellow students standing up for what they believe in was cause for lasting inspiration.

Honor society aims to hone student goals The Citrus College Completion Corps plans to help students achieve their academic goals.

tudents are having trouble just being students these days.

The state budget crunches of recent years have resulted in a steady decline of educational programs, classes, and services for continuing and prospective college students.

What has also changed is the graduation rates of community college students. Student attainment for two-year institutions has declined from 39.1 percent in 1994 to just over 26 percent as of 2008. What’s more, only 22 percent of first time community college students receive their bachelor’s degree within five years.

Those depressing statistics are perhaps what prompted President Barack Obama to pledge to increase the population of college graduates by eight million by the year 2020.

At Citrus College, the local chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society decided to study the

situation when they surveyed ENG 99 classes to determine students’ greatest obstacles to learning.

Two of the top three detriments were class availability and finances. The third was time management.

“We as students couldn’t see ourselves saying ‘We’re going to give you another class,’” said Alejandra Morales, president of the Citrus branch of PTK. “But we found we could encourage time management and make completion a priority.”

Thus the Citrus College Completion Corps was born, commonly referred to as the C4.

The mission statement on the Corps’ website states, “Our mission is to have students go beyond just taking classes and instead commit to completing their academic goal[s].”

But instead of setting concrete goals and guidelines for students, the C4 challenges students to take charge of their own academic careers. During the college’s fall 2012 convocation, faculty members and staff signed a C4 pledge to help improve completion rates—fittingly so, as the theme of the annual meeting was “A College of Completion.”

“Community college should

not be a revolving door. It should be a pathway to success,” said PTK adviser and language arts professor Lisa Telesca, who asks what her students’ dreams for the future are on the first day of class.

“In other words, it shouldn’t be a place where students are coming in and taking classes without knowing why.”

“I think that some students don’t know what they want to do, which is fine, because they’re still exploring. But I think it maybe hinders their progress because they don’t have a real objective in mind, so it’s hard to move down the pathway if you don’t know what you want to do.”

In an attempt to focus students on academic goals, the C4 brought their pledge to their booth for students to sign during club rush. Superintendent/president Geraldine M. Perri, Ph.D., signed as well.

Morales says the club is now focusing on operating a lounge where students can go and find mentors to help them with troublesome subjects.

DREAM Act inspires H.O.P.E during Club Rush Sean St. Onge Staff Writer

ope is defined as a “state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one’s life.”

Here at Citrus College, H.O.P.E. (Helping find Opportunities in the Pursuit of Education) seeks to educate people on what being an AB 540 student, commonly known as DREAMers, after the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors). DREAMers are undocumented students who H.O.P.E. hopes to educate on how the DREAM Act affects them.

Imagine yourself as an AB 540 student. You want to drive at the age of sixteen, but can’t because you cannot get a license. Or imag-

ine having recently graduated high school with honors. Applying to college doesn’t even cross your mind because of you do not have a social security number. What do you do next?

Students of this stature are around us daily, dealing with scrutiny and living limited lives.

The core idea of H.O.P.E. is to create a safe environment of both undocumented and documented students to fight for others affected by their legal status. Members also strive to raise awareness to those who are eager to learn about programs and initiatives such as the Dream Act and Deferred Action, as well as scholarships, job opportunities, and outreach programs.

H.O.P.E. and its members are heavily involved in the community. They spread awareness through outreach programs to local high schools such as Azusa and

Gladstone High School. Members encourage other undocumented students to be open and unafraid of labels that have been placed on them. The objectives of the outreach programs are to inspire young students to go to college and eventually have successful lives. The members of H.O.P.E. seek to shed light on the shadows, and infuse hope into those hiding.

H.O.P.E. president Larissa Angulo has big plans for the club this year, with talks of creating an oncampus resource center for Citrus College AB 540 students.

The resource center would give an outlet for AB 540 students to come for help with DREAM Act or Deferred Action applications.

Another issue plaguing AB 540 students is money. To complete a Deferred Action application costs a student $465. Now, the question for these students comes down to

whether or not to register for classes, or apply for the chance to live without the fear of deportation.

One product of H.O.P.E. is a recently graduated student named Adriana. She was active in Phi Pheta Kappa and the Honors Society, taking an average of 21 units each term for the year she attended Citrus College.

As a result of her legal status, scholarship opportunities were scarce, but with the support of H.O.P.E. and the hope she kept throughout the countless letdowns, she was awarded the Hurtado Scholarship from Santa Clara University.

This full-ride (approximately $150,000 over three years) scholarship, led by Jesuit priests, was intended for low-income, undocumented students that wanted to further their education without being frowned upon by schools.

Adriana is now at her dream school attaining an education that would not have been made possible without support and awareness from organizations like H.O.P.E. The “AB 540 Friendly” sign that the club had last year at the club rush drew her to the organization. The sign was in full force at this year’s event as well.

Angulo wanted to assure studnets that H.O.P.E. is more than a club.

“It’s a family that shares their stories and tries to help each other the best we can,” Angulo said.

“Adriana inspired us to not give up, and she herself gave us hope.”

ozens of clubs gathered around the Campus Center Mall Sept. 19 and 20 in hopes of recruiting new members. Clubs such as Phi Theta Kappa, H.O.P.E, and USGBC approached and introduced themselves to new and returning students to show them what they’re about.

The Inter-Club Council wanted to hold this event to “create new friendships,” as stated a couple of times in their ICC meeting held Sept. 17. The council targets students who want to interact and get involved on campus, in contrast to students just going to school and back home after classes.

This fall semester, the ICC has seen an increase in active clubs compared to last year. This year there are 33 active clubs as opposed to last semester’s 26, representing a 27 percent jump.

“It’s really good to see all these new clubs starting up,” said ICC president Daniel Celebertti. The Global Society, the Swing Club, and the Supernatural Society came to mind.

Celebertti also said he was excited to see the Bruce Lee club and the Veterans Network reactivated. And with 33 active clubs this semester, students not only have more choices, but a greater chance that piques their interests.

The Swing Club, is back after taking 11-year hiatus dating back to 2001. Swing Club president Jeff Slone said that more than 70 people signed up.

“There were various students from the swing dance community that had been [asking] me to start a swing dance club” said Slone.

“Once I inquired about it, I found out that I actually knew the president of the club from 11 years ago (Rick Quitoriano) in the swing club community, and therefore we brought it back.”

An up-and-coming club called United States Green Building Council took a bit of their time to explain what their club was all about and what initiatives they are taking to become a successful group.

Andrea Zapata, vice president of USGBC, said that the club’s purpose was to “raise awareness of the eco-friendly tactics to [construct] buildings in a more sustainable way by ‘recycling’ old demol-

ished materials and use them to build other buildings.”

She also stated the benefits of joining this club would enable students to develop leadership and communication skills which would allow them to interact with others better than before.

There were many other clubs present, all surrounded by curious students who were signing up for the clubs that appealed to them the most. Club booths were not the only attention grabbers present, though.

There was also a Red Cross Blood Drive van present, along with a few food trucks that students were more than happy to check out. KROQ 97.1’s music crew was even present to provide some music.

It was a successful event according to clubs that got many sign-ups and students such as Rebecca Ron, freshman, who had the opportunity to attend the event.

“I like the fact that this is event exists, especially at a community college,” she said. “It’s giving people opportunities to meet other people and create friendships that may last a lifetime.”

wo undefeated, top-five ranked, rival teams met at the Citrus gridiron Sept.

22. Unfortunately for the Owls, they weren’t the ones that left that way.

The #2 state-ranked Mount San Antonio College Mounties (4-0, 1-0 SCFACC) overwhelmed the #14 ranked Owls (3-1, 0-1 SCFACC) 38-14 at Citrus Sept. 22, spearheaded by a relentless attack from the Mounties’ defensive line that left the Owls scoreless for the game’s first three quarters.

To call it a rivalry would be a bit of a misnomer. It’s one in proximity only, as Mount SAC has won 30 of the past 35 matchups between the schools dating back to 1946.

Just ask Citrus head coach Ron Ponciano.

“It hasn’t been much of a rivalry,” Ponciano said. “It’s been ugly the last few times Citrus played Mount SAC.” This one was no prettier, for both sides involved. The Mounties had amassed over 100 yards in penalties by the end of the first half. Meanwhile, the Owls had only gained 77 yards from scrimmage.

and 22 this game,” said Mounties head coach Robert Jastrab, who noted the team only had 12 combined penalties over its first two games. “I can’t believe we’re that [much] worse than the other team.”

What proved to be the difference this time was the quarterbackhungry Mounties’ front seven.

They had a steady diet of sack lunches, finishing with eight on the day—four in each half—totaling 62 yards in losses. Their defense was so dominant, the Owls’ 21 rushing attempts netted -25 yards.

“They have a Division I d-line,” said freshman quarterback Bernard Porter. “They came with a lot of pressure, and we couldn’t pick it up like we thought we would.”

The early stages of the game weren’t as lopsided. Both teams seemed nervous and struggled offensively, with each team’s opening drives ending in three-and-outs.

San Antonio got on the board in the middle of the first quarter on a 10-play, 42-yard touchdown drive that culminated on a bootleg pass from Montana to sophomore tight end Spencer Stephens in the flat from seven yards out. The Owls then marched 67 yards on the ensuing drive before facing a fourthand-two from the Mounties’ 8-yard line.

Ponciano opted to go for it, but Porter’s pass to freshman receiver Josh Jones on a slant route was slightly behind the target. Though catchable, the ball bounced off Jones’ shoulder pads before falling incomplete, leaving the Owls empty-handed.

The Mounties broke the game open soon after. Following a Mount SAC drive that was halted on a red zone interception by linebacker Simon Pruitt, Citrus took over at its own 14-yard line.

peatau Mataele spun Porter in a circle, throwing the freshman quarterback backwards so violently for a sack that he also fumbled. Fellow defensive lineman Norman Moimoi scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 53 yards to the house to make it 14-0 Mounties.

Even then, that wasn’t enough.

It looked like Citrus was going to be able to stop the bleeding when cornerback Stace Woodward made the Owls second red

the 13-yard touchdown pass with just three ticks left on the clock, extending the lead to 21-0 at the half.

Remarkably, that was as close as Citrus would come for the remainder of the game. A field goal and another touchdown pushed the Mounties’ lead to 31-0 before Porter linked up with sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Kepley for an 11-yard touchdown.

Porter finished the day 17 of 24 for 155 yards and two touch-

downs. Montana went 14 of 26 for 221 yards, one TD and one interception before being replaced

by Landers, who completed 12 of his 21 passes for 177 yards and two TDs. Ponciano said the defensive prowess of Mount SAC was the driving force behind the loss, but he also questioned the effort level of some of his players.

“We couldn’t push them off the ball. When you’ve got 10 dlinemen rotating in and out, only one local guy, and the rest are from Utah, Hawaii . . . it’s a different deal,” Ponciano said. “But our guys have to compete, and that’s what I’m pissed off about. I expect our local guys to man up and play like they’re going to kick their butt.”

“I don’t think we have that, I didn’t see that. I see a bunch of soft guys,” he continued.

The Owls have a bye next week.

fter her yearlong absence in 2011, sophomore forward Jasmine Williams has returned to the women’s soccer team for the 2012 season.

Williams began her Owl career in 2010, where she started 16 games and scored a programrecord 16 goals. Her efforts led to 1st team All-WSC South honors.

Although she was redshirted for the 2011 season, Williams has returned to the field and is planning on leading the team to many victories.

“There’s a lot more on the line now,” said Williams, who has played soccer since the age of six.

Jasmine Williams, the team’s leading scorer in 2010, is looking to return to form for the 2012 season.

“[I plan to] try to score as many goals as I can, do my job.”

Since her return, head coach Tim Tracey has recognized her ability to take people on and plans to design a system of play that will enhance her abilities.

“She has potential to do many great things and we’re working hard to make her play to that potential,” said Tracey. “We feel she needs to trust her teammates more and that will help her be a more dominant player out on the field.”

Her teammates have welcomed her back on the team, relieved with the help she provides in her position as the forward.

“Last year, I played forward so I was up there by myself. This year I feel like there is more support,” said forward sophomore Jade Vehawn. ”We have support in the back and support in the front.”

So far the ladies soccer team is undefeated in 2012 with a record of 4-0-2.

Their next home game will be Oct. 5 against Bakersfield at 1 p.m.

A

lot of the principles in sports boil down to common sense.

For example, conventional wisdom says that teams on long breaks won’t perform as well when they start playing games again. Hence the reasoning behind preseason games.

Also, conventional wisdom says that teams without a ranking aren’t supposed to beat teams with rankings. Hence the reasoning behind ranking systems.

Oh, and one more thing—sports has a funny way of throwing conventional wisdom out the window. Just ask the Citrus Owls volleyball team (5-3), who were able to thoroughly outclass the then-#13 ranked Fullerton Hornets (4-3) Sept. 19, winning in straight sets 25-23, 25-17 and 25-15 after coming off their longest break of the season. The team was rewarded with a the #19 rank in the latest state coaches poll.

“We had a good week and a half of practice, so we were able to iron out

some of the problems we had,” said Owl head coach Shin Jung.

“Tonight it was all about effort. I know it’s a cliché, but that’s what it takes to win against a good team like Fullerton.”

Not to mention execution. The Owls were potent on both sides of the ball, notching 41 kills to the Hornets’ 29 while managing to contain Fullerton’s star outside hitter Jordyn Hecker, whose 14 kills came off a whopping 47 attempts—over a third of the team’s total.

Sophomore middle blocker Kim Collins, who had a team-high nine blocks, thought that the long layoff actually worked to the Owls’ benefit.

“We’ve been working all throughout practice on not only our middle [blockers], but also our outside [hitting] and passing,” Collins said. “We weren’t focused on just one aspect of our game.”

“Poor timing on those errors gave them that first set . . . and that kind of set the tone for the next two,” said Fullerton head coach Eddie Rapp. “[Volleyball] is a game of momentum.”

The team is now looking to build off of that momentum following their victory on the road against a Ventura team still looking for their first win (0-8) Sept. 21. They cruised to a 25-11, 25-12, 25-15 victory, but Jung was quick to point out that he didn’t put too much stock in the win.

“They have a new coach, [Jon Roberts] and he wasn’t able to recruit his players, so he was stuck with the player they handed to him,” Jung said. “I feel for him because my first year was the same way.”

Jung said he was more focused on the next game against Moorpark.

“As far as Moorpark is concerned, this is the first time they’ve been ranked below the top 10 in the state in quite a few years,” he said. “But I know my team is going to play, so everything is on the line again.”

The Owls host the Raiders Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.

Breaking the chain

The now-closed Cafe Cola once provided a tasty alternative to tiresome fast food.

I

n an attempt to provide a solution for the value menu monotony inflicted upon most students by fast food empires, I set out to review local, independently owned Cafe Cola, conveniently located just down the street in Azusa.

What started as a standard restaurant review is now unfortunately serving as sort of a farewell review (for now). Since my last visit to the burger joint, it has been shut down by L.A. County officials, due to what the owners claim was landlord negligence.

Since the falling out, the brains behind Cafe Cola are on a quest to find investors and a new location,

preferably in neighboring Azusa, where they established their fan base.

So until then, allow me to describe the food and the type of restaurant you can expect to enjoy once Cafe Cola is back up and running.

Their concept was to keep food simple and delicious. Cafe Cola used fresh, unprocessed ingredients—so fresh in fact, they didn’t depend on the use of freezers or microwaves.

At their previous location, they used a large board that explained how the ordering process worked.

Their “menu” only consisted of a handful of options. I started with their 1/4 lb. slider, which was constructed with a seasoned, ground chuck patty. The patty was then grilled to a medium temperature and adorned with an array of various cheeses, toppings and sauces of your choosing.

That’s not a typo. When you

placed an order, you were actually encouraged to further personalize your meal—at no extra cost. With over half a dozen cheeses from Swiss to Gorgonzola; tasty toppings varying from caramelized onions and sundried tomatoes; to sautéed mushrooms and of course thick-cut bacon; not to mention over a dozen sauces ranging from Sriracha to A1, the myriad of flavor combinations seemed endless.

When I wasn’t in the mood for a burger, I tried the Michael Walsh.

Named after the notable yelper who helped put Cafe Cola on the map, this sandwich combined the best of both worlds. Tender rib eye was paired with grilled chicken and adorned with succulent bacon, then stuffed inside doughy French bread delivered fresh daily from the famed Porto’s Bakery in Glendale. Personal choices of cheeses & toppings made it a slice of definitive Americana at its best.

Lastly, lets talk sides. In the

case of Cafe Cola, there was only one -- fries. After trying the hand cut, golden fried, perfectly seasoned wedges, it was easy to understand why one side was all they needed. For fry lovers with a serious hunger, they fed your wild side with their famous Zombie Fries.

They started by building a bed of seasoned wedges, followed by an assortment of chesses, topped with bacon and finished with more than just a drizzle of ranch dressing and teriyaki sauce. Along with all of the individualized options, this diet-shattering dish not only left you stuffed, but also looking forward to your next mouthwatering visit.

Besides the high quality meat, fresh bread and crisp veggies that contributed in making Cafe Cola a spot on any foodie’s must-try map, the atmosphere was an added bonus. This is probably why they have a 5/5 star rating with 195+ reviews on Yelp.com. Their friendly

staff, headed by cousins Romel and Adiss, effortlessly made me feel a part of their family, and were sincerely interested in my dining experience. The cousins say they wanted to make sure that customers understood that what they were trying to accomplish was to be recognized as a “movement.”

On many levels they succeeded.

Perhaps the movement was to provide people with better tasting, unprocessed, fresh food. Or a movement to make you feel like the valued customer you are and refer to you by name instead of “Order #27.” It’s for these reasons that I am confident that they’ll be back in business in no time.

The Sanamluang Cafe is located at 1648 Indian Hill Blvd in Pomona.

ravel about half a mile south of the 10 Freeway on Indian Hill Boulevard in Pomona, there is a small Thai food restaurant called Sanamluang Cafe.

Located at 1648 Indian Hill Blvd. in Pomona, the cafe is known for its exotic cuisine. The items I tried off the restaurant’s menu were the Thai beef jerky, Thai salad, grilled beef salad, and the pad Thai noodle.

The restaurant is clean and organized with the hosts offering me a friendly greeting as I walked in the door. It is not long until the host of the restaurant realizes when customer arrives. There were a lot of people dining inside, unusual given that it was 9 p.m. on a Tuesday.

The four plates I sampled were extremely satisfying.

Their Thai beef jerky ($7), an appetizer, was certainly a delight.

It is sliced beef deeply fried with a side of homemade Jaw (pro-

nounced gee-ow) sauce. It had a lemony, vinegary taste with a blend of spices and seeds. The dipping sauce made the beef taste like it was marinated.

The Thai salad ($6), served with boiled eggs is the least expensive salad on the menu. The chicken covered with lemon juice was irresistible and the purple onion nicely complemented the flavor of the green lettuce salad.

The grilled beef salad ($6) beat out the Thai salad as the best dish that night. It was dressed with lime juice, onions and a mixture of green vegetables, garnished with mint leaves and lettuce. The beef was tender on the inside, and the lime juice at the bottom of the bowl with onions was mouthwatering, though spicy.

The pad Thai noodle ($6) is for all noodle lovers. This dish made with shrimp, chicken, and peanuts was a little crunchy, but no single ingredient overpowered the others.

The zesty flavored seasoned chicken and shrimp satisfied my hunger, as it easily can feed two people.

And although the food was great, good taste does not overshadow good customer service.

The cafe’s food servers frequently checked the details. My glass was quickly filled with water as soon as it was emptied. They also inquired about the quality of the food.

Sanamluang Cafe definitely catered to its customers and made them feel at home. The music over the speakers also creates a relaxing ambience.

With food at affordable prices and great customer service, it is no wonder so many people dine there late in the evening. A person does not need to travel far to Thailand to eat authentic Thai Food—just exit and drive south for half a mile on Indian Hill Boulevard to get a delicious sample. They open at 10 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. daily.

Editor’s corner: Blown call

F

or 20 out of its 24 hours, Monday Sept. 24 was a regular day.

I have to mention I’m as addicted to sports as my mother is to “Dancing with the Stars.” Ask either one of us, and we’ll tell you the other is beyond saving.

So I was thankful that the Clarion staff finished the first round of proofing pages for Issue #3 at a reasonable hour. That meant I could catch last minutes of the Seattle-Green Bay Monday night game on my way home, thanks to wireless tethering and public transportation.

It’s no surprise that I’m done with the thank-you’s. To make a long story short, Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate (great name) was incorrectly awarded a touchdown by replacement officials, snatching a 12-14 Packer defeat from the jaws of what should’ve been a 12-7 victory.

After the Internet recovered from a three-hour Twitter bomb strafe run, I thought about how much that terrible call reminded me of Citrus College’s predicament regarding superintendent/ president Geraldine Perri’s raise.

Much like the National Football League’s decision to take a hard-line approach to negotiations with the referees union, the Citrus College Board of Trustees was determined to award Perri a raise. The actions of both would generate ripple effects that almost everybody could see coming—except for the parties making the decisions.

The board of trustees shouldn’t be surprised that Gil Aguirre is contemplating filing litigation against the college, just as the NFL can’t be surprised that using inferior ingredients resulted in an inferior product.

Nine out of 10 people spoke out against the raise July 17, yet it still went through in a 3-2 vote.

Then trustee Patricia Rasmussen said that the matter had already been discussed in closed session when trustee Edward Ortell began to express reservations, prompting Aguirre to demand the raise be rescinded due what he saw as a violation of the law.

One month later, the board says they did no wrong, and it looks like the matter will be settled in court. If the board truly believes they followed proper procedure, they have every right to do so. But if they’re wrong, I would hope they would take a lesson from the NFL, and fix this mess before it gets worse.

Celebration of books we hate to let go

ear Editor Did you know that some books may not be included in a curriculum or available for students to read? Or that some online information may be included as well?

This is because challenges— formal, written complaints made by individuals or groups about books—can result in their removal from library shelves or school curriculum. According to the American Library Association, almost three out of four challenges are to material in schools or school libraries and one out of four are material in public libraries.

Most of these challenges go unreported to the community, so most people are unaware that there are materials they may not

be able to read or see.

It is thanks to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents and students that most challenges are unsuccessful and reading materials like “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” “Slaughterhouse Five,” the “Harry Potter” series and Phyllis Reynolds Naylor’s “Alice” series, remain available.

The most challenged and/or restricted reading materials have been books for children; however, challenges are not simply an expression of a point of view. On the contrary, they are an attempt to remove materials from public use, thereby restricting the access of others.

Even if the motivation to ban or challenge a book is well intentioned, the outcome is detrimen-

tal. Censorship denies our freedom as individuals to choose and think for ourselves. As our freedoms in this country come under scrutiny, we need to be aware of this important right as Americans and be prepared to defend it.

The ALA’s Library Bill of Rights, Article 3 says, “Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.” We here at Hayden Memorial Library at Citrus College strive to live up to that responsibility for our students, staff and faculty by offering a widely diverse library collection.

In support of the right to choose books freely for ourselves and others, the library is promoting Banned Books Week from

Sept. 30-Oct. 6. We commemorate the most basic freedom in a democratic society—the freedom to read—and encourage all of us not to take this freedom for granted.

Being too early is being right on time

ear Editor, In reference to your opinion piece regarding Early Alert “How early is too early?” Sept. 12: The majority of students who received Early Alert letters at the end of their second week of the semester were students not showing up to class and/or not turning in the first assignments of the semester. In fact, 375 students were identified as showing academic difficulties by Friday, Sept. 7.

While the successful track record of our Early Alert program deserves all the attention it can get,

perhaps the author’s focus on faculty not knowing their students, or students not having any accountability, in their first two weeks of college is a bit misguided.

The main areas of concern identified by professors were missing assignments, excessive absences and poor test/quiz scores.

Instructors were able to recommend—early in the semester—participation in at least one of the following Early Alert workshops: Goal Setting, Time Management, Study Skills, Test Taking, Note Taking, Memory, and Math.

(There were about 290 recom-

mendations in total.)

Hopefully, these students will heed the advice of their professors and attend class, complete homework, and subsequently pass their quizzes and tests. Informing them that these are areas of concern early in the semester can make all the difference in students’ earning a passing grade, getting proper assistance, or, if appropriate, dropping a class if necessary.

The point of Early Alert is to identify at-risk students early enough in the semester to offer effective solutions to academic weaknesses. The earlier the identi-

fication the better, in order to give students time to change their behavior. Early Alert is aptly named.

Are we really looking for a “Later Alert” program?! That would not serve our students in the way they deserve, and would not contribute to student success in the way Early Alert has, and will continue to do.

More can be done with a kind gesture

ear Editor, In response to your editorial dated Sept. 12, I wanted to respond about this important topic. You are correct in writing that we can always do more; suicide prevention is a collaborative effort that involves everyone, including our student leaders.

Suicide prevention involves a joining of efforts and strategies to help decrease the numbers suicides each year by collaboration ideas that can help those in need of intervention. You suggested listing information on the Student Health Center that instructs others on how they can help, and I believe it is a good idea that can pro-

vide some useful tools and ideas that may in fact reach out and help save a life.

Having said this, on a college campus of this size statistically, one student each year takes his or her own life. The job of helping someone, especially a troubled young person on a college campus to make a different choice other than suicide is everyone’s responsibility, including faculty, staff, friends, family members, students and student leadership. One way this can be done is to reach out to persons who may be troubled.

Try asking someone who is alone to sit with you. Offer a kind word. Smile and say “hello.” Often, all someone need is a friendly

face or a kind gesture to change the direction of their intentions.

Many times we forget that our comments to others can affect them beyond our intentions. If we all make a commitment to spend less time criticizing, making fun of people, and instead decide to reach out and say “hi,” it can go a long way to dissolve feelings of loneliness or discomfort, which can heavily contribute to making the final decision to end one’s life.

You have challenged the Student Health Center to do more.

We accept that challenge but we also make one in turn—we make a challenge to the Citrus community to join in our efforts to help save a life. Take the QPR training, or just

an extra minute to ask a student if they need help. If they do, refer them to talk to someone. Ask if you can make a call on their behalf; don’t let someone walk away when they appear troubled. Learn to recognize the language of hopelessness, learn to identify the predictors of suicide, and go the extra step it can make a difference.

Under the same moon Overcast skies bring disappointing cancellation of International Observe the Moon Night

aturday night proved to be a disappointment to lunar enthusiasts of all ages who had hoped to participate in International Observe the Moon Night on the lawn south of the Math Administration building. Unfortunately for dozens who came in vain, the overcast sky prompted Denise Kaisler to cancel the event.

“We are sorry, but due to the cloud cover overhead we will have to cancel our viewing tonight,” said Kaisler.

Jackie Peraltza, a student in David Kary’s astronomy class brought her family to get a good look at the moon. Her daughter, Jessie Morales, who proudly gave her age as 5 1/2, said “Yeah, because I never saw it before.”

Peraltza said she came to the event, hoping to learn. “I’ve never seen the moon through a telescope,” she added.

Douglas Brooks, also brought his son, Jordan, who wanted to get a look at the moon through binoculars. Astronomy journalist Scott Lewis, who helped to coordinate the event, accommodated him with high-powered binoculars. Jordan was excited to see the moon so close, but disappointed he could not look through a telescope.

“It would have been nice to actually apply what we’ve been reading,” said Christine Garland, another student in Kary’s astron-

omy class. She also mentioned her class is currently studying the phases of the moon Saturday night, it was in its waxing gibbous phase.

NASA hosts first InOMN In 2010, the first InOMN was hosted by National Aeronautics and Space Administration to raise awareness about the scientific importance of the moon, Earth’s nearest celestial neighbor. The event was created to keep the public current with scientific discoveries such as what causes an eclipse of the moon, or why it doesn’t fall down.

The InOMN team consists of science educators and moon enthusiasts from educational facilities, business and many non-profit government organizations around the world.

The event is meant to celebrate the celestial body that has influenced the ebb and flow of life since the beginning of time.

Examining the moon encourages the study of how the solar system formed or how to plan future human mission to the lunar surface.

Viewing the Moon from Earth How we see the moon with our naked eye, or even through binoc-

ulars, is interpreted many ways by various cultures around the world.

Depending on the vantage point of the viewer, its many craters, mountains and cliffs, lunar rilles and flat plains create patters and optical illusions. What many North Americans have nicknamed “the man in the moon,” others in China perceive as the silhouette of a rabbit, known as the companion to the mythological Moon Goddess, Chang’e.

Those interested in doing their own lunar observation need neither a telescope nor binoculars to view the moon’s many craters.

They are some of the easiest features to examine, even though the moon is 238,857 miles away from the earth. For example, Tycho crater on the moon’s southern hemisphere is visible even to the naked eye. It is the brightest spot on the moon, but a telescope easily reveals it to be a crater.

What can not be observed by the naked eye is that the temperature at the celestial body’s surface ranges from 93°C at night in its polar regions to 111°C in daytime equatorial regions. The length of a day is equivalent to 27.3 earth days.

Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. “We will be asking InOMN hosts around the world to do the same.”

The attendees that did briefly stay, gathered and winked with a thumbs up and shouted with pride “Here’s to you, Neil!”
