DESIRE LINES - ODE TO PAUSE STORY BOARDING The competition for the RIBA sketch looked at addressing how the future of cities will look after the pandemic. Our group deign process looked into how there are many different method about how a final objective can be achieved. hence the name desire and through the final sketch we attempted to depict these different pause spaces created of the public and how the public realm grows over time and becomes bigger then the private spaces allowing for more community activities and shared spaces.

IDEATION PROCESS

We looked in to a varisty of methods for illustrating the final sketch. One of out main sources of inspiration was solar punk. it displays the more positive outlook into the future. During the pandemic, while there were many negatives towards humans, wildlife begun to come out of hiding and slowly uses spaces that were once their homeland. this idea of nature and humans interacting homogeneously is carried through in our ideas and the future should also look into achieving this balance rather then overshadowing wildlife.

SKETCH NARRATIVE ‘The moment as something old is dying before something new has been born’ – Anonymous In the past as populations grew, we saw a transition from natural to concrete jungles. Mass construction has altered landscapes and threatened biodiversity. During the pandemic, we saw how the lack of human intervention allowed nature to co-exist momentarily. The imbalance between the environment and structures caused us to imagined a space where more importance is given to places of pause in consideration of the natural environment. This process has inspired the rebirth of cities, where in the biodiversity and wildlife are given the opportunity to co-exist. Our main inspiration for our work is based on solar-punk, which is the complete opposite of cyberpunk, wherein cyberpunk would look at the negative aspects of the future such as continuing climate change and pollution. Solar-punk looks at the more positive future where nature completely takes over and governs how we live. These pause places are evident in these outdoor functions such as the elevated parks, outdoor theatres, cafes and bridges etc. Most of the buildings in the forefront is being built upon trees and nature and not vice versa, which shows how we start building around nature instead of destroying it for our convivence. The same is evident in the developed buildings in the background, which has hollow empty spaces that allows nature to pop out and surrounding the structure. We also included a section to show that this pause is evident in our daily lives as well, how ecological dominance becomes a normal and more sustainable way of life. Future designs will require to aim for everything to coexist and evolve independently in multiple environments and work towards a more long-lasting sustainable future.

The site is very accessible by many modes of public transport from the metro to the water-way method: abra. Useres can take the metro and walk, or ther eis even the option of taking the bus. Useres from across the creek would have to use the abra and then walk to wards the site throuht the spice souk. These mode of transports can be accouted for in the design in the way the access to the site is designed.

The busy neighborhood is home to many different sources of smell and noise.

There is a lack of green spaces in the area. it is very densely populated with parking lots serving as the only open spaces.

Mapping the tourist paths, their routes were very inefficient with the tourist passing through the spice souk twice. This allows for the opportunity to design new patterns and routes making use of the creek front to draw in the tourist and residents.

Most shop owners do not live in the area. they also have family in Duabi. The Al Ras area is only their place of work . They don not spend alot of time in the area otherwise.

Al Ras has a male majority demographic. Many are labourers that work in the souk. they also live in the area. majority of the population in his area are Muslims and live sharing with other people. With the area is home to the workers there are a variety of users of the site from all over Dubai and the world (tourist).

FOOD AND BEVERAGE STAFF The F&B industry was selected as the main user group for the design due to the upcoming Deira enrichment project.

There would be a need for staff to live in close proximity to their work place. This housing could be a hub for these workers as they work part time and temp and the industry usually has a high turn over rate. Many of similar skilled people in the area would be beneficial for job hunting and resource sharing.

The upcoming project along the creek will bring in a whole new demographic into Al Ras, the neighborhood will have to change and adapt to accommodate the needs of the new residents. This brings along the idea of gentrification where the characteristics of this rich community will be forever changed.

The building styles give a more wealthy and contemporary feel however in doing so, the people in the surrounding area will slowly start to be relocated. In this project i look at how we can use the development of the deira enrichment to feed into the design process in terms of users and functions and accommodate the needs that the project my not be able to meet for a particular group of people

Through the site pattern mapping, the fact that people moved around the site rather then through the site was observed.

This lead to a neglected central sikka. The roads around the site act as edges however Baniyas road act as a major edged preventing people accessing the creek.

Treehouse, a co-living complex in Seoul built by architecture firm Bo-Daa, is a stack of micro-apartments surrounded by a planted atrium in a triangular concrete block. Located in the heart of Ganganam Korea, within a densely populated community. The Community is not forced but coaxed: each unit is designed for a single person with private bath and kitchenette, and residents only share amenities where larger scale and community make for a better experience.

Facing east the morning sun lights up the the central atrium. Most units are oriented towards the north to make use of maximum natural light.

Rooms facing south get shade from other exisiting building and are located on the lower floors of the structure.

CREATE AN AFFINITY WITH THE CREEK

Mapping neglected sikka as an opportunity as an access

As the previous studies had strong edges, a rotation along the central axis was used to allow multiple views and break the monotonous edge along the elevation

From the prior mapping the the mass was pushed toward the south of the site to leave ample north area for outdoor spaces

The final conceptual massing idea combined the previous ideas and rotated the axis as well and divided the spaces. The form flows along the site and rotates along the north to make more northern terrace spaces

The experimentation with the types of spaces was then done with the semi private spaces on the upper floors as shared areas. The private was in the central elevation to allow view and act as a barriers between functions.

This is one iteration of the final massing , voids have been cut into the mass to act as terrace spaces. in the sectional view this also creates an interesting displacement, more functional outdoor spaces.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE DEVELOPMENT To connect the people to the creek a pedestrian bridge was designed that cuts through the mass of the building and continuous over banyans road. to overcome the height restriction the bring is raised 2.5m and the road is dropped 2.5 m to along large trucks to pass.

Along the bring courts and more functional public spaces can be designed. with wide brings it can be used as needed during the season for exhibition, events, pop up markets.

As the ramp was designed to break the mass at the mezzanine , rather then physically wrapping the ramp around the building the idea of the ramp was continued through the building as a break in the building massing at various levels creating voids and outdoor spaces .
