Welcome to this month’s Vintage Register notes! As we read this how is it August already, we may well wonder? The year is romping along, and, as I write this in mid-July, it is already a month since our very successful VR 60 event at Brooklands. (See additional photos. Thank you, kindly Mr. Editor!)
Partly because of the (one year late!) Register anniversary, partly because I like to ponder such things, I have been thinking a lot about ‘origins’ lately. Of course, we all know what MG would become, the world-famous racing and recordbreaking marque epitomised by the ‘MMM’ era, but the following photo will, I am sure, baffle many.
The label written in fountain ink on the photo itself helps, perhaps, explain the situation. ‘MG Sports Body on Chrysler chassis’. ‘What?’ you may well ask. Did MG put sporting bodies on a Chrysler chassis? Well, it appears so, or rather more correctly Morris Garages seems to have…
The answer as to what may be going on here lies in the origins of MG.
William Morris kept Morris Garages separate from Morris Motors and in the twenties not only dealt in cars but motorcycles, not to mention quite a diverse range of makes! American cars, too. As we know, it was through looking to make a greater margin on Morris products that the first Morris Garages specials with attractive alternative coachwork came to be in 1923. However, this photo - although highly reminiscent of the Morris Garages four-seat coachwork (note triangular windscreen brackets) - when I stumbled across it online was, how can I put it, ‘news’ to me!
Dipping into ‘Oxford to Abingdon’ by Robin Barraclough and Phil Jennings as one does, one can read of such well known American makes as Dodge & Hudson passing through the dealership activity of Morris Garages in Oxford… but no mention of Chrysler. Odd. Not being especially a Chrysler aficionado, I did wonder whether the labelling might be wrong; however, sure enough a search on Google for ‘1920s Chrysler wheel centres’ returned photos of the same centre caps and logo on this car.
Can anyone corroborate any of the above?
Circumstantially supportive of this, is the brown card that the photo is glued to. Again, going to our book collection ‘The Complete Guide to MG Collectibles’ by Mike Ellman-Brown shows a hand-produced Morris Garages brochure from 1925, which had photographs mounted in this way with the dark brown card shown, then further attached onto lighter brown pages.
Of course, the clarity of how we see MG now and all it would go on to be, is quite a leap from the evolution of early events as they take place, where the interplay of commercial necessity and profit interact with the personalities involved to ‘organically’ go from one situation to another. It is interesting to think of it like that.
It is also fascinating that from the earliest days Morris Garages was a ‘broad church’ and that that facet remains very much alive in the MG Car Club with all the diverse models from earliest surviving cars to present day; epitomising a story of continuous change and adaptation to different eras of the motor industry. Current times being but the most recent chapter in a still-running story.
I close this month with a photo round-up from Brooklands, celebrating 60 years of how it all started for the Vintage group, and some of the glorious Vintage MGs which came to help mark the occasion.

This month I have no less than two tiny snippets to share with you. I’m rather spoiling you, aren’t I? As I write these notes, England have just lost the footie, so here we are with a little pick-me-up for all those ‘affected’! Anyway, first up is this wonderful photograph of the late great Mike Hawke. father of our current chairman Jeremy, Mike left us way too early back in 2010, but his memory lives on, not least in the form of J2396, number three on the Register, seen here going not so ‘sedately’ at all at the very event we discussed last month, Jeremy was quick to point out. I think it’d be quite the task to find a photo of dear Mike racing his beloved J2 in which he does not hold on to the door; a strikingly characteristic pose. What a wonderful chap he was!
The second snippet comes by way of James Burmester who has recently taken up sprinting, hill climbing and racing a lovely single seater P-type,

Many will have read about the sad death of Keith Bush on June 17. Anne Bush asked The SVW Register to write a few words to be read out (in English and French) at the funeral on June 24, which was livestreamed from France. We also sent 25 photos that were displayed during the ceremony. We reproduce the tribute below.
“Keith Bush was a mainstay in the MG community for many years, certainly from the 1990s. He owned three rare pre-war MG VA models but was also a lifetime classic car enthusiast, expert mechanic and auto-electrician.
Keith and Anne attended many MG events and it was always Keith who would fix cars to keep them going for the event and to get them home. In fact, the joke at the time was that people brought their cars to events to get them serviced! Keith wore his trademark green sweater that he didn’t mind getting grubby, but would scrub up PA0654. The car was built by its previous owner, Tony Miles, who, unfortunately, did not live long enough to enjoy it for long, but James is doing him proud by using it as intended by Tony. And by one Mr Kimber, I dare add! The picture, which I thought too lovely not to share, doesn’t show all that much of the car, but it does show how even these Suffolk crosses are interested in Triple-M motor cars! Being about ready to lamb, they may have been vetting the car for a crib? Until next month, Safety Fast!
well for the evening dinners (and very well for Royal events such as that at Windsor in 2009 in the presence of The Duke of Edinburgh) as can be seen in the photo!
An open bonnet was like a magnet to Keith, but when it came to his own cars he was not always so careful. On one occasion when preparing for an event in France, he was overly generous when filling his axle with oil and wondered why his rear brakes were so poor.
Keith served on the SVW Register Committee in the MG Car Club from 2005 until 2015 and it was after this time that Keith and Anne decided to move to France to enjoy their cars on the empty roads.
Keith designed and assembled a cut-away MG VA engine on a mobile stand, which he presented to the MG Car Club. This is displayed in the Club House and will be a lasting legacy.
Problems posted by people on social media always received a useful response from Keith. In fact he posted one such reply at 6.55pm on June 17, the day he died. Anne notified us at 9.30pm that day that he had died.
He will be sorely missed by those who knew him and received the benefit of his expertise. Our thoughts are with Anne, together with his mother and brother who survive him.
There will be more on this next month, together with a report on last month’s SVW Event in Battle and news about VA Tourer MG5552.

June 21 has come and gone and some of the hopedfor freedom has again been curtailed, with some events now being cancelled yet again. So, let us see what stage four and July 19 bring. £26,000: average value of a historic car. How do you and your T Type fit this profile?
Triumph and MG Weekend.
This event is scheduled to take place at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern on August 13-15. The Tyne Tees Centre is organising the California Cup, an Auto Solo challenge, and Noel Lindford has requested that the T Register enter a team. The T Register won the event in 2017 and a

Staying with the MG & Triumph theme, our traditional Stoneleigh Spares Day, in February, has found a new home at the Telford International Centre which will now take place on Sunday 23 January 2022, after being postponed again from August 22 2021. It will be interesting to see how the new venue shapes up, but we’ll have to wait until next year to find out.

Welcome to the August issue of our regular Y Type notes. I would imagine that by the time you are reading this you will hopefully have spread your wings in your Y. Let us all hope that the decisions made by our leaders don’t end up with further health issues... we will see.
I am always seeking information and notes about what you are doing with your Ys. One matter that was included in the Editorial Section of last month’s Safety Fast! was the need for someone to take over the Y Register Shop that Mike and Sue Silk have run so effectively for the last 12 years. As I write this I am unaware whether any member has responded to their request, so some soul-searching is very necessary. It is certainly the number one priority for your Committee and of course Mike and Sue. If you feel that you can help then please do let us know through either our website or Facebook pages.
I get quite a few phone calls and email inquiries from Y owners and always endeavour to help. Matters of a technical nature I refer to Neil Cairns, our wonderful technical guru, who knows everything about Ys. So any inquiries in this respect then please do contact Neil by email.
I had an email from a Y owner requesting advice about the torque settings for the cylinder head bolts, as he was fitting a new head gasket. Interestingly he mentioned that the relevant information was not in the Y Manual, which is correct. I have a very tatty copy of Blowers Workshop Manual which covers all MGs up to the Z series Magnette. Unfortunately, the section on Ys was incomplete; however the torque settings for a TC XPAG were set at 50lbs per square foot. This I confirmed online and forwarded the information to the inquirer. All part of the service!
I hope to see some of you at Llanerchindda in September which will hopefully be blessed with wonderful weather and of course a whole load of Ys. Should be lot of fun!
The Y Type photo this month is of Alan Chick’s superb MG YB following a regular service. Alan was off for a well-deserved ice cream break after an excellent morning’s work!

Our second event this year was the Somerset weekend, a whistle-stop tour taking in the Haynes Motor Museum, other visitor attractions and scenic drives. The crammed schedule was superbly organised by Rosie Jones and Paul Batho, and rather than compress Paul’s excellent account into
GOOD NEWS – the MGA SouthWest event is going ahead on Sunday August 22 when we will be joining the Club’s South West Centre at East Somerset Railway, Cranmore for a picnic and hopefully steam train rides. Starting time is 10.00am onwards at Cranmore, BA4 4QP.
Sad to report but MGA Day on August 1 has been cancelled. You may have seen this from the website or the e-newsletter and you may be wondering why, because this event would have been after July 19, when restrictions will have been lifted. The Register had been working with the National Trust (NT) for over a year on organising this event but with only about five weeks to go we received a call from the NT advising us that a policy change, with regard to Events, was to be implemented by the NT with immediate effect and that this may influence our decision as to whether to proceed with MGA Day as planned. This was followed up with a further call from the NT the next day, confirming the space available here I thought you’d probably prefer to read the full piece on magnette.org Also on the website you’ll find a new article by the indefatigable Roger England, describing the process of fitting his ZA with a Maniflow LCB exhaust system, which is now available as a special order kit. A number of Magnettes including mine have previously had custom exhausts made and fitted by Maniflow, requiring a visit to their facilities in Salisbury (not really a hardship admittedly), but Roger is very pleased with their kit and I’m sure it will be popular.
Somerset Tour – Haynes Museum
There’s still just time to mention our upcoming Yorkshire weekend (August 7-8) which starts at the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway near Skipton on the Saturday. If you haven’t already booked for the Cream Tea or Fish & Chip special trains it may be too late now, but you can still enjoy the spectacular Yorkshire Dales from a steam train, as well as the workshops/ engine sheds, other local attractions, and reserved parking on Embsay station forecourt. Please contact John Beesley (077925 43043) if you’re planning to attend. On Sunday August 8 we’re once again at the Harrogate MG Club Show in Pateley Bridge, only about 15 miles through the Dales from Embsay, where the Register concours will be judged (NTG Trophy). No camping at the showground this year, but other accommodation is available locally.
Lastly, John Shorten asked me to mention that while he’s still very happy to deal with enquiries by phone (01603 872436) for repair panels and various other parts, he’s had problems recently identifying the names and numbers of callers from their voice messages. John doesn’t have email, so if you do leave a phone message, he requests that you please make sure to speak slowly and clearly!

that the only way the NT would be prepared to proceed with any event (such as MGA Day) was if the Car Club involved pays the NT the sum of £500 as ‘rent’ for the parking area. The thinking behind this was explained as that by renting the space, the NT would be absolved of all anti-covid measure responsibilities, which would then pass to the Club. Thus we would also be expected to conduct our own anti-Covid risk assessment and to implement all measures such as social distancing, one way systems etc.
At the time of writing the NT are yet to post their post-July 19 visitors protocol and it will be of interest to see how many anti-Covid measures remain, including the necessity for risk assessments, which could shine a light on whether the NT’s policy change was simply a cynical move to raise money or a genuine attempt to deal with Covid issues despite their continuation being very much in doubt (and timetabled to end) when the policy was adopted.
Naturally, the MGA Register Committee has decided that we were not prepared to proceed on this basis, which is a great shame considering all the MGA Day events that have been successfully held at NT locations in the past.
To add insult to injury the NT also informed us that in future (2022 onwards), a charge of £10 per car will be levied on all future classic car events at several NT locations in the Buckinghamshire/ Warwickshire area and that NT members would also be expected to pay this surcharge.
The Register has used National Trust properties for MGA Day over the last 50 years but in future will look at alternative venues where we can visit without a fee.
Finally some period ‘Eye Candy’. Alastair Chisholm from Banchory, Aberdeenshire, sent me photos of his 1600. MKII fitted with the Derrington Cross Flow Head, matching rocker cover, tubular exhausts and 1 3/4” SUs. Nothing wrong with the MGA layout as standard but for me this has a wow factor!

There has been much talk of E10 fuel and possible Issues. Our own Vic Young says: I checked the fuel lines on the Green CGT and removed the fuel pump connections. All looked ok until I removed the braid, and that was all that was holding the pipe together! So I remade the pipe in 5/16” copper pipe with only a short fuel pipe connecting the butted copper pipes, remade the pipe connecting the two carbs together using 1/4” copper pipe, then covered with rubber pipe to insulate. I can supply tee piece with copper pipe if needed.
If you need any help like this Vic is always happy to assist. 01737 551141, or 07831 701028.

With the Covid shackles falling away it is looking like our planned programme can go ahead pretty much as normal and our regions can open up again. Many have already been holding pub meets outside but can now move inside again if they wish. Look out for all the regional events starting to appear on their various Facebook pages. We hope that you really enjoyed the great gathering at Gaydon on July 24 and there will be more on that in the next issue of Safety Fast! and several pages in the latest (slightly delayed so we can get the full MGF25 report in) issue of FasTForward.
Under Canvas
Looking ahead, we have the camping weekend at the England’s Rose pub in the heart of the Chilterns on August 20-22. A relaxed weekend under canvas with fellow MGFers enjoying the hospitality of this great pub and the lovely countryside surrounding – plus some typically Thames Valley banter and the odd silly game.

Terry Secker also sent in a photo, published below – this one brightens things up!
Hoping we will be back to some sort of normal soon. We have booked an hotel for our Xmas gathering on November 20, at Hatton Court near Upton St Leonards in Gloucestershire. The cost is £165 for the Saturday night including an Xmas meal, bed and breakfast (we have options for Friday/ Sunday if required). Numbers are limited – please email Mike for further details including how to book.

Locked up North
Up next we head to Malton in Yorkshire for the MGF & TF GO! (North) event held at the interesting venue of Eden Camp. It’s a WW2 Prisoner of War camp with some fascinating exhibitions in all the remining PoW huts and it has a large car park which can fit over 100 MGFs and TFs to gleam in the Yorkshire sunshine. This builds on the same event last held here in 2018 and we thank John Prewer for the organisation. There will be some spot prizes and special displays of modified and monogram cars plus a timeline (if we can manage it!). Check out the MGFRegister. org website for details and links of how to book.
The Chain Gang
Then we have the National weekend based at the Chain Bridge Hotel in Llangollen on September 17-20. You might still be able to get a place on that one if you email Ian at events@mgfregister.org Minds to boot, I am sure Alice will be there as well, but who is she? Once again, email Mr Wright at events@mgfregister.org for booking info etc.
I wonder what we’ll be getting up to in 2022? We’re keeping that under our hats at the moment (meaning they’ll think of something soon – Ed) but you can expect a full year of national and regional events, just like the old days!

Alice is back
Finally we have our end of term Christmas bash at the Cricklade House Hotel & Spa in Wiltshire on December 4-5. All the usual festive stuff and a fundraiser for Young

Events
Having been planning events behind the scenes for months, it was good to finally get back out on the road again. On Saturday July 3 a small number of Zeds visited Cowfold in West Sussex for their Fete and Car Show where they mingled with a host of other classic vehicles. On Saturday July 10 we attended our first ‘official’ show of 2021, the BMC Leyland Day held at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon. Despite the recent unseasonal weather, the day remained dry and we were able to enjoy all the vehicles on display from the earliest BMC/BL cars right up to the latest MG models. The Register was represented by our newest committee members, Jamie Day our Social Media representative, Will Dunlop who has taken on the position of Scottish Representative and Rob Johns who has taken up the mantle as Events Co-ordinator. We were extremely fortunate to have an amazing range of Zeds attend which made a very colourful and eyecatching display. Among them were Rosemarie Feltoe with her Trophy Yellow Mk1 ZR, Lisa Marie Broker with her Monogram Mk2 ZR in Twilight, Steve Ward with his Monogram Lagoon Mk1 ZS saloon, Danny Featherstone with his Mk2 Pearl Black ZS saloon, Neil Jay with his Solar Red Mk1 ZT press car, and Jake Wilson with his Trophy Blue Mk1 ZT-T. A big thank you to all those who attended.
There will be a full report on the Racing Championships from Donington Park on July 17-18 and from Gaydon where we attended the 25th anniversary of the launch of the MGF on Saturday July 24 in next month’s Register update.
Kimber House Open Day
As we were unable to hold any events during the first half of this year. We have organised another one of our successful open days at Kimber House on Saturday October 2. The arrangements for the day are still very much at the planning stage but the format will be similar to before, with a guest speaker and buffet lunch. There will be a 20th anniversary theme to the proceedings. Further details will be announced in due course.
