Eleni Kaftanzoglou Zographos, circa 1905 Domnika Zographos Malamides in Thessalian costume, circa 1930 Helen Malamides Johnson
ChriSTakiS ZOgraPhOS and hiS deSCendanTS
Christakis Zographos was born in 1820 to a Greek family in what is now Albania. As a young man he moved to Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and very quickly established himself as a successful moneychanger. By the 1860s he had become one of the most important bankers in the Empire and the trusted advisor of the future Sultan Murad V. His varied financial and industrial interests allowed him to build up an enormous private fortune, which he put to good use as the principal backer of numerous Ottoman Greek charitable, educational and cultural initiatives.
After 1877, Zographos divided his time between Paris and Monte Carlo, playing an active role in international finance and providing lavish funding for philanthropic causes until his death in 1898. His children cemented the family’s ties with Greece: all three daughters married prominent politicians and his younger son George served as a cabinet minister and senior public official. In 1901 his elder son Solon married Eleni Kaftanzoglou, the daughter of a renowned Greek architect. They lived for the most part on the family’s vast estate at Lazarina in Thessaly, and it was there that their daughter Domnika was born.
Domnika Zographos was the last member of her family to bear the name which her grandfather had made famous. She and her husband Lyssimachus Malamides, an industrialist with origins in Northern Greece, lived most of their lives in Athens. Their only daughter Helen settled in Chicago in 1952, after her marriage to C. Nicholas Johnson, the GreekAmerican president of the DeMet’s confectionary company known for its specialty Turtles. They in turn had three children, born and brought up in the United States, who recently inherited the magnificent jewelry collection formed by their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Few names in fine jewelry conjure the mystique and prestige of Suzanne Belperron. Through her delicate feminine aesthetic and an intriguing professional journey she managed to emerge as one of the most renowned designers of the 20th century.
Beginning her career with the prestigious firm of René Boivin, Madame Belperron’s personal style began to take shape, showing a preference for flowing sensuous lines and utilizing alternative materials like rock crystal and chalcedony as carved components in her jewels. After leaving Boivin and forming Herz-Belperron with Bernard Herz, Belperron enjoyed the freedom to explore her own design sense more fully. Her work attracted some of the brightest luminaries of her day including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor as well as Elsa Schiaparelli and Diana Vreeland.
Though unsigned, the ring offered here has been reviewed by Belperron, compared to their comprehensive catalogue of design sketches and certified as an authentic work.

The famed founder (1870-1965) of the eponymous cosmetics company, Ms. Rubinstein rose from humble beginnings in Poland to become one of the world’s first self-made female millionaires. Starting her company at a time when women were severely restricted from participation and not able to draw upon a line of bank credit, the formidable entrepreneur first established herself in Australia and quickly expanded to include the United Kingdom and the United States in her growing empire. A lover of beauty in all its forms, Ms. Rubinstein was an avid collector of fine jewelry and amassed an impressive assortment during her lifetime. The jewels that Jean Schlumberger created during his tenure with Tiffany & Co. represent some of the most iconic jewelry design of the 20th century. Known for their whimsical organic motifs and exquisite stone quality, Schlumberger works adorned a veritable who’s who of influential personalities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, the Duchess of Windsor and Jackie Kennedy. The collection represented here includes several rarely encountered vintage examples.
The leaf and vine motif necklace pictured opposite embodies Schlumberger’s love of natural, organic themes. Its beautiful simplicity belies the intricate construction and complex stone setting techniques necessary in its creation.
The “Cooper” bracelet pictured below was first made famous by the original purchased by Mrs. Gary Cooper. This jewel, with its signature overlapping “criss-cross” elements in gold and bold use of diamonds, is a rare early version.
Finally, the exquisite ring featured in Lot 284 displays a beautiful and unusual modified step cut diamond as its center. Faceted in a lozenge or diamond shape form, the stone displays its distinct character within Schlumberger’s familiar criss-cross motif setting executed in platinum.
