The title of "Chosen Undead" is a reference to a prophecy concerning the end of the Age of Fire.
It states that at the very end of the Age of Fire, an undead champion will appear and undertake the pilgrimage to ring the Bells of Awakening in "the Land of Ancient Lords," Lordran.
The Chosen Undead is a human, and thus, a descendant of the Furtive Pygmy, one of the original Lords who claimed the Dark Soul.
Upon arriving in Lordran, the Giant Crow drops the Chosen Undead in Firelink Shrine, which acts as a hub for the player for the rest of the story.
After hearing the location of the Bells of Awakening from the Crestfallen Warrior, the Chosen Undead sets out on their journey.
Various characters can be encountered throughout Lordran, such as Solaire of Astora, a charismatic warrior seeking "his own sun"; the treacherous knight Lautrec of Carim; and Siegmeyer of Catarina, an absent-minded knight who frequently finds himself in danger.
On a rooftop in the Undead Parish, the player slays the Bell Gargoyles and manages to ring one of the bells. Later on, the player makes their way deep into the infested swamps of Blighttown.
There, the player defeats the Chaos Witch Quelaag and rings the other bell. After ringing both bells, the gate to Sen's Fortress is opened.
Solaire of Astora
Solaire of Astora is a character who appears in Dark Souls. He is an exceptionally skilled warrior who purposefully became Undead so he could visit Lordran in his quest to find a sun of his own.
He has become a fan favourite among the Dark Souls community due to his jovial attitude and memorable dialogue.
Depending on the player's actions in Lost Izalith, Solaire will either be available for help as a summon against the final boss, or his descent into madness and despair will force the player to kill him.
The player first meets him after defeating the Taurus Demon in Undead Burg; after exiting the tower, before turning left and running across the bridge where the Hellkite Dragon lurks, instead turn right to find him gazing at the sun; he is immediately distinguishable by the painted sun emblem across his chest, his green pauldrons, and his red feather.
The player typically last encounters Solaire in Lost Izalith, where he has gone insane and hostile upon donning a Sunlight Maggot, which he considers to be his "Sun".
However, if the player opens a shortcut and kills the Maggot beforehand, Solaire retains his sanity and can be summoned for the final boss.
Solaire's legacy is remembered in both Drangleic and Lothric. In Drangleic, the image of a "hero of yore" was painted onto the Sunlight Parma, an item given to the Bearer of the Curse for offering Sunlight Medals to the Heirs of the Sun.
Siegmeyer of Catarina
Siegmeyer of Catarina is a A knight swearing allegiance to an unidentified order of warriors, Siegmeyer of Catarina is an Undead adventurer who dons the Catarina Set and wields the Zweihander to seek danger in Lordran.
As the player progresses through Sen's Fortress, Siegmeyer will visit Anor Londo, where he rewards the player with a Tiny Being's Ring if they dispatch the Silver Knights in the adjacent room.
Afterwards, he will reward the player with Emit Force in Firelink Shrine, if he is told that the player was responsible for opening the gate at Sen's Fortress.
When met in Blighttown, he rewards the player with the Pierce Shield if given 3 Purple Moss Clumps. Siegmeyer does not normally rely on others for help. His self-determination is drained as the player solves each predicament he comes across.
In an effort to regain his pride, Siegmeyer offers to help the player by sacrificing himself in Lost Izalith, to dispatch some Chaos Eaters in the poisonous pits.
The outcome depends on the player's actions:
Siegmeyer's wife had recently died, but apparently he was out adventuring and unaware of her death.
Siegmeyer appears to be an adherent of Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, but judging from his miracle, he may not be in the Way of White.
Gwyn, Lord of Cinder
Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight and Cinder, also known as Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, the Great Lord, or simply as Lord Gwyn is the final boss in Dark Souls and one of the original four Lords who helped defeat the dragons.
Lord Gwyn wears an impressive set of royal drapes, with gold bands on his arms, and a crown atop his head.
On his feet are what appear to be a form of moccasins and anklets, and he wields a greatsword imbued with the power of light and of the First Flame, which he uses to adequate effect.
His face is that of an aged man with calm eyes, and he has an impressively long, grey beard and hair of the same nature.
When the Chosen Undead fights Gwyn in the Kiln of the First Flame, Gwyn appears to be Hollow, evident by his haggard appearance, charred skin and missing eyes.
olaire retains his sanity and can be summoned for the final boss.
After the advent of fire, Gwyn discovered a Lord Soul along with the Furtive Pygmy, Gravelord Nito, and the Witch of Izalith; he was surrounded by knights when he found the Lord Soul and was dressed in regalia, so it is possible that he may have been a king before obtaining it.
His soul allowed him to manipulate light, and generate a subtance called lightning.
The Lord allied with Seath the Scaleless and amassed army, and with their power granted by their souls, challenged the Everlasting Dragon for dominion of the World.
