HOW TO WRITE THE PERFECT ATHLETE SPONSORSHIP LETTER I want to clear something up! It’s the most commonly searched term on Google when it comes to athlete sponsorship and I think people might be missing the mark!

It is: “How Do I Write A Sponsorship Letter?”

WHAT IS A SPONSORSHIP LETTER? Now, the term ‘Sponsorship Letter’ in itself is important to clear up. A sponsorship letter is in my book; the cover letter or the cover email that introduces the sponsorship proposal (find out how to create a winning sponsorship proposal here).

When it comes to your proposal, it could be a video, PDF or printed document, that’s the thing that tells your sponsorship story. It says who you are, what you’re asking for, what you’re offering. And importantly, why you’re choosing this particular company. So that is the thing (the Proposal) that’s introduced by your sponsorship email or letter.

CREATING YOUR SPONSORSHIP LETTER

They may have spent 5 minutes reading that and thought “do you know what I’m busy, I’ve got other things to do!”. So keep it short. If you make it short you are actually showing them how good you are to work with. You’re showing that you can communicate clearly and effectively, that you respect their time, that you have a process and that you understand how sponsorship works.

So it really works in your favour to challenge yourself to keep that short. Two or three paragraphs at the most.

Ideally, the letter/email itself should be really short and sweet! all you’re doing is introducing this proposal. Hopefully, you already know the people that you are connecting with, it’s not just a random email to any old person. And you can really rest assured that if you’ve got your proposal right, all this letter has to do is introduce it.

If you’re someone who hasn’t created a proposal before, it’s worth taking the time and doing it right.

Now, these are busy people, they are getting loads of proposals and what you want them to do is look at yours. So make the cover email really short and sweet.

Make it to the point, make it accurate and respect their time. If you make the mistake of writing a long cover letter/email they may not actually read the proposal!

Or, they might be someone that you’ve spoken to before and you understand that they’re pretty easy going. But this is still a business conversation, so you need to be respectful.

GET A LITTLE CREATIVE So you can go from being very formal to being friendly.

That might be, “Dear Mr. Peterson, thanks so much for taking the time to have a look at my proposal, I’m so excited, I can’t wait to hear back from you. P.S. I hope you love the picture of me summiting Mount Everest. It was the most amazing moment in my life… etc.”

While I haven’t actually summited Everest, I reckon if you’ve done something like that it would be good to throw it in.

What you’re doing is enticing the person to then look at your proposal (find out how to create awesome proposals here) , but you’re not giving it all away.

Now the other way you could do it, we’ve talked about formal, we’ve talked about friendly. What about fun? If you’ve got something creative, if you got that kind of personality, you’re a bit fun, use it! Because you’re showcasing yourself.

To give you an insight, one of the coolest sponsorship cover letters I ever saw, was one that was from an ultrarunner. They get pretty dirty out there on the trails! The email basically said: “Hey I’m an ultra-dirty ultra-runner, can your ultra-washing powder keep me clean on the trails?”. And I’m pretty sure they ended up with sponsorship. So try to judge what the right approach is for you, keep it short and simple.

And remember the purpose of a sponsorship letter is just to introduce the proposal.

So, take the time, do it right, and in our experience, amazing things will happen for you! Sponsorship is all about connecting with opportunity. There are abundant opportunities all around you! So now you just need to connect with them in the right way!

GLENN PAUL (GOLF) Being a sponsored athlete allows me to represent a brand and provide them with additional exposure within my sport. It also provides me with an opportunity to pursue my passion and achieve my goals while being positive role model to people within my local and online communities.

BRODIE GRECO (BBJ) Being a sponsored athlete means I'll have companies supporting my journey around Australia and overseas It helps with the financial burden of competing which runs into the thousands per year.

VIKKI WALLS (TARGET SHOOTING) Being a sponsored athlete means having support from companies through products and funds that make it possible for me to compete. e.g. fundraising and sponsorship has made it possible for me to attend the World Cup last June.

YOLANDA SCHMIDT (MUAY THAI) Being a sponsored athlete means that the value I place on myself is seen by others, the drive I have is seen by others and the willingness to share is seen by others, and they want to be part of my journey.

HOW I BECAME A SPONSORED ATHLETE

I've learned that in order to be a successful postcollegiate athlete it requires your full-time attention and effort. I knew when I was leaving Iowa State that I needed some sponsors to continue my running career.

There were products that I was used to using that I would now have to pay for and frankly I needed money to put food on the table. Nothing was quite exciting for me as getting the first sponsor. It was not Nike or anything flashy, but I was officially a sponsored athlete.

The first company I went after was actually a fish oil company. I did not want money, I wanted the free product. The reason being that fish oil is expensive.

For my athletic success I knew how important it was but paying vast amounts of money for it was no longer an option. Immediately, I started working on a proposal, and I focused on one thing, what I could do for them. I did not make it about me, and how great I was, I made about how good they were and how I could help them be better.

The journey to earn my first sponsor wasn’t easy. Here are 3 steps I took and any athlete can use to earn their first sponsorship.

I HAD TO CLEAN UP MY BRAND

DROP YOUR EGO A lot of athletes approach sponsors like hot shots.

Here is the thing, if you were such a hot shot, sponsors would be knocking at your door begging you to take their money. Sponsors were NOT doing this for me, though I was an Olympian junior year of college, my senior season was not so hot. I was burnt out from the Olympics and from being an NCAA athlete for the be done. Nothing was going to be handed to me.

Before sending in the proposal, I made sure to do one thing that a lot of people forget to do, and that was cleaning up my online brand. Any time you enter a new chapter in life, it is a good idea to go through your social media and clean up what is no longer relevant. Sometimes we post pictures that seemed like a good idea at the time.

"ANY TIME YOU ENTER A NEW CHAPTER IN LIFE, IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO GO THROUGH YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA AND CLEAN UP WHAT IS NO LONGER RELEVANT."

I had to make sure that everything I did and said could be posted on a billboard with my name and not ruin me. I had so many funny and crude things I posted that I had to delete because I knew if any potential sponsor saw it, it would kill the deal right away and I apparently did not want that.

ALL BUSINESS I took the proposal very seriously to become a sponsored athlete. I made sure it was proofread by multiple people. Even had my parent’s business friends give it a look. The goal was to make sure it came off as a sweet deal. That started by offering a certain amount of social media promotion. I also had a blog that got about 5000 visits per week from their target audience. I made sure that everything was done correctly before I handed it into them. The best lesson I got from this is that success lies in the preparation. It comes down to the work that you do when no one is watching, and you really get no credit for your action.

I handed in the proposal knowing I had done everything I could.

I received an email back, and they were thrilled by my proposal. The marketing manager told me that most athletes ask for free stuff, but they offer nothing in return. They were impressed with how professional I was, and how much time I put into the proposal. It showed them how much I cared. I was rewarded with so much free product that I was able to give some to my family and friends. Definitely was not rich, but I was taken care of, I had what I needed. I was officially a sponsored athlete.

Not every proposal I made went smooth like this though. Part of being all business means being prepared to hear no and being resilient when you. The best thing you can do is bounce back and keep trying.

If you keep doing everything you can on your end, you will eventually get the yes that you have been seeking.

7 THINGS I'VE LEARNED ABOUT ATHLETE SPONSORSHIP BY: LORI NEDESCU

T

o be honest, I never thought I’d be able to call myself a sponsored athlete at all. Sponsored athletes were featured in magazines, on professional teams, on cereal boxes, smashing world records and getting Olympic spots, etc. They were to be looked up to; the gold standard for athletic success.

It took me years of competing at the elite level (running & cycling) to stop looking at other athletes as being more deserving of sponsorship and start considering my own potential for sponsorship bids. I went from no sponsors to several individual sponsors to gaining a title sponsor for my cycling team. It took a lot of research, rejection, and hard work to get to this point and here’s a bit about what I’ve learned along the way.

Results Competitive athletes tend to be well, competitive, valued results, placements, and statistics. Separating myself from this mindset was the hardest initial hurdle in my journey for finding sponsors. Don’t get me wrong, I have some great results, but realistically, I can’t lead with those.

Which is okay because as I would go on to learn, most sponsors don’t really care. GASP. I know, I know! But seriously, most sponsors (especially nonathletic related brands/companies) have no idea what xyz event is or what it means to be ranked "x" in the nation in "x" category. Results are nice, they are helpful, but they aren’t everything.

When I started going after sponsors, I had to explore what else I had to offer and turns out, I have a lot. So, if getting less than stellar results has been holding you back, start thinking outside your athletic achievements; things you do to give back in the athletic community, professional accomplishments, travel, popular (big) races/ events you attend, how many Strava/Twitter/Instagram followers you have, etc, because those are likely more valuable to a potential sponsor.

Be Authentic.

In the age of social media sharing, an authentic voice is what most brands are after. A huge part of my platform @CadenceKitchen is showing a ‘practice what I preach’ approach to lifestyle, nutrition, and training. This means, if I accept a sponsorship, I better be using it and loving it, for real.

Most of the time, I’m reaching out to the company of a product I’ve been buying, eating/using, and yes, tagging for quite some time. More on that in a moment, but overall you need to love the message, brand, products your sponsors put out.

Personally, I’m gluten-free, so any food brand needs to have that option. I cannot take sponsorship from a regular bakery, that would tank my image and the brand’s. I also hate swimming, like seriously terrified of open water, so a pure swimming brand just wouldn’t be a good fit. This might seem like common sense, but it happens all the time; athletes who get sponsored by alcohol who don’t drink or by a

restaurant chain that would never actually eat that food. It makes you look bad, it makes them look bad. .

Work For It

Showing a sponsor, you add value to their brand is key. Seriously, just think of it like a job interview and sell yourself right away. Wow them with all your worthy achievements before they have a chance to say no. Once I learned this method, the process became much more comfortable and friendlier.

I created a lengthy and well-designed PDF package to provide detailed insight into my ask and who they’d be representing. The work doesn’t stop there, once you sign on with a sponsor, you’ll be a full-time representative of them; tagging, posting, eating, wearing, using, blogging, etc… In the end, a sponsorship is a two-way street that benefits both parties, and typically the more you’re given, the more you need to give back.

Keep Trying I went through lots of rejection and harsh responses to my requests before the acceptances started to come in. First, know that whoever you’re reaching out to likely get plenty of asks so do something that sets you apart and go in with a tone of understanding and how you can help them. Make sure you know the brand before contacting them by researching them, using the product, stalking their posts and building them up on your social media months before you reach out. Reaching out to big sports brands is fine, but if you have no portfolio or references to provide, you’re likely wasting your time.

Seek out local brands who need recognition in the community instead. In my experience, local brands are amazing to work with. They’re easy to communicate with, are more flexible, and they need you just as much as you need them. They are the gateway sponsors to bigger, national level brands.

Value yourself Like I mentioned earlier, being sponsored is not a free ride; you’ve got to work for it. However, your sponsor(s) should be working for you too. When I started seeking sponsors, I was in awe that I could get anything, but I quickly learned I had to define my worth; what was acceptable for me to provide in turn for a sponsor. It might be setting the number of posts, blogs, shout outs, if they can use your image or quote you, if you have to use their logo, work an expo event for them, etc…

My sponsors are buying into me, not just the athlete part of me, but my entire image which I’ve worked very hard to build up my credentials, experience, results, and audience reach and that is not traded lightly. Also, be clear on what they will provide you.

They are a platform you can use to grow your image so ask them to repost your pictures or do a spotlight on you. Know the amount of money or product you’re signing on for and when you’re set to receive it. I am not shy about asking to re-negotiate an offer or provide a counteroffer to match my self-worth.

Don't Be A Jerk I’m sure this comes as no surprise, but if you’re a jerk, no one wants to play with you and they certainly do not want to give you money. If you see your sponsor at an expo, go take a photo by the booth and chat with whoever is manning ship. It’s important to take that extra step to say thank you whenever you can.

Unfortunately, negative actions get around much faster than positive ones. I’ve seen a teammate get cut after using a competitive brand’s wheels in a race instead of her own sponsors. Your reputation is vital for gaining future sponsors.

Sometimes You Have To Say NO THANKS There have been many companies that I have turned down offers from because they conflict with a current sponsor because the products or message was too similar or with a proposal that would devalue a current sponsor agreement.

Also, there are times an offer just comes with too many strings attached. Do the math. If it takes too much time, effort or resources to do what they are asking for what they are giving, walk away or renegotiate. With every sponsorship comes more responsibility and work, so try not to spread yourself too thin. It’s important to know when not to be greedy.

Your sponsors become a huge part of facilitating your athletic success, so work hard for them, respect them, thank them, and know you’re special for having them on your side.

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT With ups, there are some downs…In 2010 at the age of 15, race car driver Bryce began having heart palpitations and fainting symptoms while sitting in a high school classroom. That night, Bryce was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) and Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT). Bryce underwent two catheter ablation procedures to get him back to 100%.

Unfortunately, the return to racing would not come quickly. The medical treatment and cost would sidetrack Bryce’s progression for the next 7 years. With the support and love from his family and friends, Bryce continued to work during the downtime to make a full return in 2017. Driven: The Bryce Cornet Story is a film about Bryce’s current racing journey as well as his journey of perseverance and grit to accomplish his goals when an obstacle came into view. Writing down your thoughts is like stretching for the brain. When it’s feeling a little stiff or tired, you need to spend some time opening it up to ensure it doesn’t get tight. Just like you warm up and cool down your muscles around training to avoid injury, you have to apply the same strategy if you want to keep your mind healthy.

Taking the same holistic approach, we now look at what else sponsorship can offer you! How can it support your other life ambitions, interests and passions? How can it support your professional or educational goals?

SECRET #2 – IDENTIFY WHAT AWESOME VALUE YOU CAN OFFER TO SPONSORS

By thinking outside the square, you will identify other area’s that can benefit from the types of sponsorship you choose….and the kind of value that is exchanged!

The most important aspect of sponsorship is creating a mutually beneficial relationship, which means that you need to give sponsors commercial benefits that drive customers in their direction…….and to be blunt, increase their profits!

Being great at your sport just isn’t enough….and what you will begin to see is that your results on the sporting field actually don’t play that big a part in your role as a sponsored athlete

Perhaps you want to improve your public speaking skills and they will be able to give you opportunities to practise….or even provide training for you!

Maybe social media is an area you would like to pursue a career in, well, being a sponsored athlete is a great platform to hone your skills….especially if the company that sponsors you is willing to let you be actively involved in their social media activities!

SPONSORS ARE INTERESTED IN WHAT YOU CAN OFFER IN RETURN FOR THEIR INVESTMENT IN YOU….GET CREATIVE!

SUPERSECRET #1- They might even give you some work experience…..hey, it could even lead to a career with them! We have seen this happen many times. But importantly, you’ll get to become part of the company and people will get to know you (and hopefully like you! Of course they will! ) and this really helps develop and improve the chances of a longer term, valuable relationship with this sponsor.

Things like an increased audience through media, a target market reach through your social media channels, and direct promotion of products through your participation in events are all BENEFICIAL to your sponsors…..there is, in fact, no limit on the benefits you can offer!

SUPERSECRET #2–The best way to figure out what you can offer to sponsors? Research them, see what they are doing (and trying to achieve) and figure out ways to contribute to that!

Help them achieve their goals

3 SECRETS TO BECOMING A SPONSORED ATHLETE Here’s how to approach this very important part of seeking sponsorship: Identify your professional skills: public speaking, entertaining, coaching, inhouse training/workshops Identify personal skills: Are you good at communicating, have you overcome adversity, do you have skills that have helped you achieve your goals?

Identify your network /audience opportunities: Who is your audience, What do they like, How do they spend their money, what do they value, what influence can/do you have on them Think about what content you can provide for your sponsors’ marketing and communication activities: Can you write great blogs, take great pictures, create fun or inspiring videos? The most important thing…….look beyond sport………it’s about BUSINESS.

SECRET #3 – TAKE TIME RESEARCHING AND REALLY UNDERSTANDING YOUR POTENTIAL SPONSORS The More Your Research The More Success You Will Have This allows us to understand more about their values, previous or current sponsorships they are engaged in, their social responsibility activities, and important to know what they want out of a sponsorship relationship and how we can be of benefit to them. MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT WHO YOU APPROACH FOR SPONSORSHIP BASED ON KNOWLEDGE NOT JUST A WANT! Find out about their business activities both internal (with their staff) and external (marketing, events, other sponsorships etc.)

SUPERSECRET TIP #3 – Then, it’s time to make initial contact (or follow up contact if you already know them) and ask the potential sponsor what they might be looking for out of sponsorship…and whether they are open to receiving a proposal! This is NOT the pitch…this is JUST asking questions!

You MAY find they are not right for you at this stage….and that is absolutely fine! This part of the process can save you sending proposals to the wrong companies!
