WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Durer depicts two major rules when expressing perspective. Firstly, all perpendiculars are required to meet at a single vanishing point. This vanishing point is up to the individual and provides the basis for the sense of depth. This invisible point requires that the projecting lines remain at a constant in travelling from point to base observational plane. This ensures that the image maintains an accurate projection and can be perceived by the eye to represent the 2 dimensional image as a 3 dimensional image in perspective.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Described as a mathematical space, Homogenous space has no set limit, offering field whereby every object is able to relate to each other. It removes the sense of direction, and acts to represent that of position rather than giving each object an individual contextual value.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 By placing the hotel in the coner of my available quad, It added to the effect of an interior within the quad. This reflects Polo’s actions as he progressed through the city.

The long corridor taken from the point of view of Polo contrasts the corner depiction, as Polo enters the ‘airport’ area he becomes outside, evident through the amount of open space in the viewpoint.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

“looking through the same goblets at the same winging navels”. Found in the hotel, the goblet appears to be held out infront of Polo’s face, while staring at barmaids and the scene before him of a happy hotel of his era.

As polo “continues [his] flight”, he exits back to the airport of Trude.

“They” address him, depicted by a fortune teller who is the only individual to have a perceivable face.v

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic practices resemble those that are unable to be reproduced whereas allographic practices are those which are open to reinterpretation and reproduction to further its motif’s. Autographic can be commonly described as an artists direct contact to a canvas in a singular piece whereas Allographic can be associated with theatre practices.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words)

Allen argues that while modern and current architectural practices utilize the efficiency of developable surfaces, the new and upcoming developments should push development even further. Through gaining new techniques through new technologies and ideas, architects can attack the socio-political and rising issues in today’s society.

FINAL DRAWINGS The process of Marco Polo’s travelles through Trude, as evident in the continuous cities title, is placed in an infinite loop (as depicted by the custom spiral symbol). As Marco “will arrive in another trude”, the loop resembles that repeated natured. This is further emphasised in the perspectives. Other than the fortune teller (perspective 2) all the characters faces are blurred. This removes a sense of place as the story describes location as something that has no sense of place other than the sign of the city which would change on each loop through.

Perspective 1 - The Hotel

The notation itself can be clearly depicted through the fine vault lines, highlighting both changes in pace of Marco along with character movements and interactions with eachother and Marco. The size of the mood symbols reflects the intensity of those interactions, for example, the mix of positive and negative moods representing the trading occuring the the market place.
