The Bloom of a New City: Spring’s Urban Renaissance
Dear Residents,
As the holiday season comes to an end, we set our sights on the promise of a new year and the arrival of spring. We are witnessing the bloom of a new and improved Temple City, experiencing an urban renaissance. Our City is undergoing a major transformation through capital projects that are reshaping our community.
Signs of progression and development can be seen throughout the City, from the revitalization of our downtown through the Las Tunas Streetscape Project to essential street repairs, major park upgrades, and the development of new parks to come. We’re reconstructing Temple City to better serve our residents and visitors. Our vision is to create a community where families feel safe, businesses thrive, and opportunity is within reach for all.
A key factor in this transformation has been our commitment to collaboration. The future of Temple City is being shaped not only by City plans but by the voices of our residents. We’re ensuring that the City’s growth is guided by the voice of our community through community meetings, public forums, and outreach efforts.
There is growing excitement in the air as we watch our City evolve. Renewed energy, thoughtful planning, and strategic investment are improving the way we come together as a community.
Thank you for being a part of the process - let’s continue building a City that inspires, includes, and endures!
Cordially,
Bryan Cook City Manager

Park Updates

LIVE OAK PARK
The Rocket Returns
Temple City’s park upgrade has landed in Live Oak Park with the rocket-themed playground. The final design was a collaborative effort of community input, a nod to the city’s history, and visionary design. The creative expertise, led by SWA Group, helped put together a design that creates a generational bridge between Temple City’s past and its future.
The playground features six distinct play zones, three seating areas, seven independent shade structures, and a relocated fitness zone along the Live Oak Park walking path. Each zone incorporates a space-theme with dynamically designed safety surfacing. At the heart of the playground stands a four-level rocket with an attached control tower and space station. Surrounding this centerpiece are a variety of imaginative play areas including a comet zone with a group spinner, blue giant zone designed for smaller children, meteor shower and rover zone featuring sculpted mounds for climbing and exploration, solar system zone with orbit-inspired spinners, and red planet zone featuring themed swing sets.
The shade structures are thoughtfully positioned to provide comfortable canopies over the entire playground to ensure maximum usability throughout the day. This innovative design reflects Temple City’s commitment to creating safe spaces that inspire imagination while fostering a strong sense of community.

TEMPLE CITY PARK Bamboo Forest
The new Bamboo Forest theme was thoughtfully chosen to complement the existing features of Temple City Park, creating a calm, nature-inspired space that blends seamlessly into the park’s environment. This design evokes a sense of tranquility while enhancing the overall play experience for families and children.
As part of the park’s upgrade, a landscape buffer now provides both visual and physical separation from the adjacent north parking lot, further enhancing the park’s serene atmosphere. The main playground structure features a net climber, slide, spinner and overhead climber. Swings and sensory panels are included in the project with a custom designed safety surfacing complementing the theme. The renovation also includes a refreshed picnic shelter and updated LED lighting. Every color and material was selected to reflect the natural aesthetic of both the playground and surrounding park environment. The City’s ongoing commitment to improving public spaces offers an environment where people can feel connected, safe, and inspired.
Sereno Open Space Project
Temple City is gearing up for something special with a new open space project expected to be completed later this year. The Sereno Open Space Project, located in the southwest portion of the City, is uniquely situated at a corner lot within a residential neighborhood and creates an opportunity for a creative use of public space. The project’s design is the result of a collaborative effort involving residents, City leaders, and landscape architects from SWA Group. Once completed, the space will serve as a welcoming community gathering area, enriching the quality of life for residents and stakeholders in our local communities.

Las Tunas Streetscape Project

Temple City’s Downtown District is undergoing a vibrant transformation through the ambitious Las Tunas Streetscape Project . Long considered the heart of the City, Las Tunas Drive has served as a lively commercial corridor— home to shops, restaurants, and community events. Now, the City is breathing new life into this iconic street, encouraging more visitors to experience the Downtown District.
As one of Temple City’s two major commercial arterials, Las Tunas Drive has always held the potential to be something greater. With the Streetscape Project, the City is capitalizing off that potential. The City’s goal is to create a downtown that prioritizes pedestrians, enhances aesthetics, and fuels small business vitality. In essence, this project is a bold reinvention centered on community.
The Public Works, Community Development and Planning Staff collaborated closely, to ensure the improvements reflect the needs and spirit of the community. The effort to improve the community was led by City Council and its Ad Hoc Committee.
A range of upgrades was curated to make improvements to the City, including entry welcome signs featuring the City’s camellia logo, sleek metal banner poles, colorful vinyl banners, blade signs and fresh awnings to adorn the storefronts of our local businesses. LED lighting has replaced outdated fixtures, creating a safer and more inviting atmosphere at night. New street signs, potted landscaping, and café-style seating encourage people to linger and enjoy their surroundings.
Utility Box Art
The Temple City Utility Box Beautification program, facilitated by 11:11 Projects, is beautifying the neighborhood by creating art within the City’s existing infrastructure. The project prioritized a call for local artists to help transform the ordinary utility boxes into community landmarks that celebrate the City’s unique character. Local artists were commissioned to paint 26 utility boxes as part of the City’s Greater Las Tunas Drive Streetscape Project.
Beyond the major upgrades, it’s the finer details that add charm. Pavement leveling ensures safer and smoother pathways. A major part of the City’s effort was to help set Temple City apart from its neighbors by adding improvements that will help reinforce what makes Temple City unique. When possible the project sought to build on the colors from the City’s logo. For instance, street lights and traffic signals were painted black. The new pots and plants will feature colors from the city logo. Even the banners, blade signs and awnings will help reinforce the City’s brand. Brand-new trash cans and benches offer both utility and style, inviting visitors to take a moment to relax.
One of the standout features is the Utility Box Art Project, which transforms once-plain utility boxes into vibrant works of public art. Different from surrounding cities, Temple City’s program relied on more than 20 artists, creating a whimsical sense of discovery as walkers see new and fresh expressions of art and Temple City. The artists also teamed up with art students from Temple City High School who helped paint the boxes while learning about a career in art. This initiative not only beautifies the space but also offered local artists a platform to showcase their creativity.
With the Las Tunas Streetscape Project well underway, Temple City is proving that a city’s downtown can be both functional and inspiring. Through thoughtful design and community collaboration, Las Tunas Drive is becoming the vibrant, welcoming heart that Temple City deserves.

Street Rehabilitation

Temple City has been making a continuous effort to enhance infrastructure and road safety through the Street Pavement Rehabilitation Project. Partnering with Onyx Paving Company, the City remains committed to maintaining safe street conditions, which is a critical asset to this community. This initiative marks a significant investment in the city’s streetscape, bringing smoother, safer roads to everyone who lives, works, and commutes through the city.
A preliminary evaluation was made to identify and prioritize streets most in need of maintenance, forming the basis of a Street Resurfacing Map. The street repair consists of
cold milling existing pavement – removing worn asphalt to make way for a fresh new surface. These upgrades not only improve ride quality but also enhance traffic flow, visibility, and overall safety for all road users, including drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
While major repaving activities took place from July through September of last year, the City continues to perform ongoing quality assurance. Temple City’s commitment to maintaining safe, reliable infrastructure helps make it a great place to live, work and play.
With these improvements, the road ahead is looking smoother than ever.
