I am excited about this special issue of 9:36 Magazine GOES PINK! Although my life has not been affected by Breast Cancer, I know so many who have experienced some encounter with this disease. The goal of this issue is to not only honor those who have experienced Breast Cancer in some way, but to educate others by providing facts about this disease that invades the lives of so many families every year. So let’s honor those who did not survive, celebrate those who have survived, and respect those who have taken preventive measures to not be a victim to Breast Cancer!

5 Little Known Breast Cancer Facts 1. Breast cancer doesn’t always come in the form of a lump.

Breast cancer in its earliest stages usually doesn’t have any symptoms.

When symptoms do appear, it’s not always in the form of a lump. Be on the lookout for any of the signs below and report them to your doctor right away.

Lump in your breast Swelling in or around your breast, collarbone or armpit Skin thickening or redness in or around your breast Breast warmth and itching Nipple changes or discharge Breast pain lasting for more than three to four weeks 2. Having a male relative who’s had breast cancer increases your chances.

You may be more likely to get breast cancer if you have a male relative who’s had the disease. This is especially true if it’s a close family member like a father, brother or son. If you fall in this group, talk to your doctor about genetic testing to find out if cancer runs in your family.

3. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce your breast cancer risk.

Being overweight or obese — especially after menopause — may raise your cancer risks. To keep your cancer risk low, avoid weight gain by eating healthy foods and staying active. Stick with a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. And, try to fit in at least 30 minutes of physical activity in your day.

4. You don’t need to learn how to do a self-exam.

Studies show that doing monthly breast self-exams isn’t necessary.

Instead, it’s more important to stay aware of how your breasts look and feel. If you notice changes, report them to your doctor without delay.

This works just as well as doing a formal breast self-exam.

5. Drinking several glasses of alcohol a day can up your breast cancer risk.

Having a glass of wine now and again is not bad for your health. But, drinking several glasses a day can increase your breast cancer risk.

Play it safe by sticking to the recommended serving size. The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends that women have no more than one drink per day and men have no more than two drinks per day.

I was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

What is your title?

I am a 6th grade Language Arts and United States History teacher.

How long have you been in this position?

I have been in my current position for 16 years, and prior to that, I taught 5th grade for three years.

Where do you work?

I work at Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Middle.

Was this what you always wanted to do?

No! I've always loved children, and I've worked with them since high school, but I actually started in Psychology.

What degrees have you earned?

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Gifted and Talented Education.

What awards have you received?

I have been named Teacher of the Year numerous times, I received the Technology Innovation Award for Tuscaloosa City Schools, and the Kathy Perkins Award for Accomplished Teaching. Last year, I received a grant from the Tuscaloosa Education Foundation to provide more comfortable and flexible seating for my students and most recently, I was honored to have the new Elementary Learning Center at the Boys and Girls Club of West Alabama named in my honor.

What's your ultimate goal as an educator?

My ultimate goal as an educator is to empower students to push themselves, academically and personally, further than they ever imagined. I do this by building meaningful relationships, developing their gifts and talents, and creating and teaching authentic lessons.

What has been your most memorable experience?

The most memorable experiences happen long after my students leave my class. It’s when they come back to catch up and share what’s going on in their lives. It's when I get invited to their weddings and baby showers. It's being thanked and appreciated for being a part of their village.

9:36 Magazine caught up with Araya Sunshine Candle Company owner, Yolanda Michelle Knox to take a deeper look into her company.

What products/services do you offer?

We specialize in handmade scented soy vegan candles, wax melts and room/ car deodorizing sprays and car vent clip diffusers. We also offer mobile onsite candle making classes, wholesale and private label products.

When did you decide to start this business?

I started my business in 2020 right before the pandemic.

What inspired you to start?

The business was born out of my desire to help support my grandchildren, who the company is named after. Aryah ( The SHE-EO) and her sister Sunshine who tragically passed away before her 3rd birthday.

How can we find your products and purchase from you?

We are at the Tuscaloosa River Market every Saturday from 7am-12p year round with all of the"FREE SMELLS"! We also have a website www.arayasunshinecandlecompany.com What's next for you?

My next move is to continue to grow my business nationally. We've recently started selling our products in Atlanta and anticipate opening the first Candle Bar in Tuscaloosa in the near future. My vision is to hire more people from disadvantaged areas, teach them a trade and to help other small businesses with growing their business. I'm passionate about reaching and helping others and showing them that your dreams can become a reality if you work hard and like me, trust God to see you through.

What would you say you are most proud of?

The thing I'm most proud of is my resilience. I suffer with chronic and sometimes debilitating pain due to congenital degenerative scoliosis. My entire lumbar and a portion of my thoracic spine are fused with titanium rods and screws. This has hindered me but it has not stopped me from pushing through to try and reach my goals. My grandchildren will have a company to one day take over and it will sustain them and future generations.

Word of advice for small business owners. Do your due diligence in studying, researching and honing your craft before starting, build you a team that understands and that buys into your vision, be you and don't compare yourself to anyone else and don't stay down when you're knocked down.

ArayaSunshine Candle Company suffered some serious setbacks over the years, but by the grace of God we're still here.

I can't do any of what i do without my husband, Chris. He's my been my cheerleader from day one and I'm so grateful for him. My team: Jasmine, Valerie, Kateria and Tehisha are all instrumental in keeping my dream alive.

Love Thyself

Parental Love: The Sweet and The Strong Our mother and father are the foundation and blueprint for all the relationships we build throughout life.

From an early age, we learn primarily through what we see rather than what we hear. As children, we are visual learners, absorbing the world around us long before we fully comprehend language. Even as infants, it is our sight that develops first, allowing us to take in our surroundings before our mobility is activated. In those early moments, long before we can stand, it is the actions of our parents that shape our understanding of love, trust, and relationships.

A mother’s role is to nurture, to pamper, and to coddle. Her love is a reflection of God’s grace—sweet, soft, and comforting. It’s like a warm, savory essence that surrounds us, gently shaping and molding us. Her love is fluorescent, glowing with compassion and tenderness. She shows us how to navigate the world with care, offering validation and emotional security. As our first teacher, a mother guides us not only through her words but through her actions, giving us our first vision of life’s compassion and kindness.

A father’s love, on the other hand, brings a different texture to our lives. It is strong and firm, offering structure and discipline. His love can be compared to something hot, spicy, and tangy—full of strengthand sometimes challenging. But it’s this constructive fear that shapes us. Not fear in a harmful way, but the kind that makes us want to do right because we know our father is watching. He instills in us a sense of responsibility, a vision of work ethic, hustle, and strength. A father is the protector, the provider, andthrough his actions, we learn what it means to be accountable and resilient.

Together, these two kinds of love—sweet and spicy, comforting and firm—create balance.

The nurturing embrace of a mother, combined with the constructive discipline of a father, teaches us how to move through life with both love and purpose. A healthy parental foundation is essential because it provides a complete vision of life. We see how our parents care for each other, how they communicate, how they support the home equally. This duality is crucial—on one side, the nurturing love that assures us we are protected and cherished, and on the other, the structured love that teaches us strength, accountability, and the importance of making the right choices. This balance is vital for our growth. If we receive love from both parents, we experience how love is expressed in different ways—through softness and compassion, and through strength and discipline.

The way they look at each other, the way they work together, and the way they create a home become our blueprint for how to love, how to work, and how to live.

9:36 In many modern households today, compassion and grace seem to be dwindling. The dynamics of family life have changed significantly, and with these changes come a loss of vulnerability and emotional openness. A large number of households are now single-parent homes, and even in homes where both parents are physically present, one can often feel emotionally absent. This can stem from unhappiness, stress, or the struggles of balancing life’s many demands, but the actions parents display during these times are crucial. Our children are always watching, learning from what they see. As parents, we must recognize that we are constantly teaching our children through our actions. In homes where one parent is absent, it’s easy for walls to form around a child’s emotions. When a mother is overworked, juggling multiple jobs just to provide, or when a father struggles to maintain the household alone, it can be difficult for children to receive the affection and nurturing they need. Even in two-parent households, if the parents lack emotional intelligence or the ability to communicate healthily, that imbalance filters down to the children.

The emotional state of a parent, whether overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply absent, has a profound impact on a child’s ability to express themselves, feel loved, and trust others. The absence of compassion and vulnerability in the home creates a barrier to healthy relationships, stunting emotional growth and leaving children with an incomplete understanding of love, communication, and balance.

It’s essential that we are mindful of how our behaviors affect our children, because they are constantly learning from the examples we set. It’s crucial for parents to be conscious and present in their roles.

Our actions, our presence, and our awareness shape the emotional environment in which our children grow. As parents, we must recognize the profound influence we have and the importance of being mindful of the example we set. This means working on any unresolved issues within ourselves that might prevent us from providing the love, compassion, and guidance our children need.

I encourage all parents to take time for reflection—especially when it comes to things that trigger you emotionally. Healing is vital, not just for yourself, but for the well-being of your children. When you heal and allow yourself to be open and vulnerable, you create space for your children to do the same.

Acknowledging where you are in life, taking accountability for your actions, and focusing on love above all else are essential steps to fostering a healthy emotional environment. By being conscious of our actions—whether right or wrong, but striving for what’s right—we not only align ourselves with what God desires, but we also teach our children how to navigate life’s challenges, how to build healthy relationships, and how to be compassionate individuals. Our children learn by watching us, so it’s up to us to ensure they are learning how to love properly and fully.

So, Cherelle I’m so excited to be able to have this conversation with you! I’ve been truly inspired by your journey, not only as a breast cancer survivor but also as a businesswoman, wife, and mother. I’d love to hear more about your experiences and how they’ve shaped you into the incredible person you are today. Let’s start from the beginning. Where are you from, and how has your upbringing influenced the woman and entrepreneur you are today?

I’m from Birmingham, AL. Ensley to be exact. Me seeing my mom and the parents of my friends work so hard is what influenced me. I know that all they wanted was better for us and that’s all I want now.

9:36 What was it like when you first found out you had breast cancer? How did you process that moment?

The first moments of me finding out that I had breast cancer were…scary…sad…confusing. Those are the first words I can think of. I had mixed feelings. I was happy that I finally knew what was wrong with me but sad because of the actual diagnosis. I was afraid to tell anyone or talk to anyone about it.

Could you share a bit about your treatment journey? What were some of the biggest challenges, both physically and spiritually, that you faced during this time?

My treatment was honestly, in my opinion, the best outcome for me. We had found the cancer so early; I didn’t need chemo. As long as I agreed to get my breast completely removed, I didn’t have to worry about radiation either. I felt blessed in a sense because there are many women that don’t have a choice.

Some have to go through so much worse, but God spared me. Getting a mastectomy seemed like the only and best option.

After surviving such a life-altering experience, what motivated you to keep pushing forward? Was there something or someone that kept you grounded and focused on your recovery?

My little family motivates me. I’ve been blessed to have a husband that pushes me every single day to be better and want better. Even when I wanted to look down or feel down, he was there to make sure that I stayed out of my negative thoughts.

Especially when it came to my self-esteem.

My children were watching and that’s the main thing that kept me going. I never wanted them to see me in pain or hurt.

They would help me to the restroom while my husband was at work. Or try to help cook because they just knew I was in pain. It was the way they held me up through every surgery. The cancer wasn’t the first time I had to have a piece of my breast removed. I had had surgeries on my breast before because I suffered from fibro-cystic breast.

Every time, my babies and my husband helped me through it.

Now that you’ve beaten breast cancer, what drives you today? How do you stay motivated and empowered in your everyday life?

Having life. Being alive! I still have my days when life gets the best of me. However, I have been working on my prayer life and my walk with God. That’s what empowers me! I wake up at 5:30 in the morning, and I gotta start with the Lord’s prayer. Like I said I’m still working on my prayer life. But it works for me. My children and husband motivate me to keep going even when I’m tired. I know that they’re watching me. I want them to have so much more in life. While dealing with cancer I vowed that I would work as hard as I could to create something that we could leave to our children. I was tired of just working to live. I wanted to do something different. I felt that I had a second chance to really bring my dreams to fruition.

9:36 You’ve created a beautiful lingerie line, which is so empowering! What inspired you to start a lingerie business after your battle with cancer?

Well, my lingerie line had been out for two years before I had cancer. It was founded in 2019. Right before the pandemic started. It began as a partnership and we wanted to show that all women could be sexy.

Every woman deserves to feel sexy. And it’s okay to make yourself feel that way. We throw girls’ nights and the ladies wear the lingerie or pajama sets. We hype each other up during the entire event and make sure they know they look good! I think the girls’ nights are my favorite part of my business.

How has your journey influenced your relationships with your family?

Well, I spend more time with my family but I’m also much more driven than I was before. I push myself to do so much more of what I love to do now. Before, I probably would have ignored doing the things that I enjoy. The journey has brought my husband and I closer. I can honestly say we learned to communicate with each other better and work things out together. I do believe my family played a very significant role in my healing. I don’t think I could have been as calm and confident as I was throughout the entire journey without them.

Beyond your family, how did your experience impact your view of self-love and body positivity, and how do you hope to pass that on through your brand?

My experience really made me look within. I was 30 years old and losing both my breast. Of course, I had thought about getting a breast lift or mommy makeover, but I never imagined I would have them removed because I had cancer. I cried a lot silently. When they were initially removed, I had metal in my chest, but you could still tell that they were gone. It made me feel like I was less than a woman. My husband did his best to tell me I still looked good and how beautiful I was, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of losing a part of me. It wasn’t all the time. It was just when I felt bad for feeling bad. Like there were women going through so much worse. I would pray, and eventually I would feel better. I would take time to look in the mirror and tell myself that I was still beautiful. It was a mental battle. Self-love was the only cure, and it made me only want to go harder when it came to my brand. I also wanted to help women, who were going through what I was going through, feel better about themselves. I wanted them to know that they were still beautiful too.

When you’re not working on your lingerie line or producing events for women, what are some of your favorite things to do to relax and enjoy life?

I honestly spend most of my time with my family. I love cooking and having my friends and family over to hang out and have fun. I do love a good time out of town or maybe even a night out for drinks, but I don’t do much. I’m a homebody.

You’re such a busy woman. And your brand is growing. What can we expect to see from you in the future?

My plan for my business is to work on a full line to sell in stores. I also want to do more fashion shows.

So far, I’ve done two and I’d love to get more under my belt. As far my modeling career, I want to work with more people in the fashion industry and walk in more fashion shows tool. I’m focusing on increasing my portfolio. If I work hard enough, the sky is the limit.

MEZLIE PRINCE MY ROCK, MY CONFIDANT, MY BEST FRIEND There's so much that I can say about my grandmother. She was a God-fearing woman with a great spirit, great sense of humor, and an overall great personality. When you needed an ear to listen (just listen) she was that person. My grandmother was my best friend, and it didn't matter how far I worked from her house, I was coming to see her everyday. She loved sitting out on her porch and she looked for me everyday so that we can do just that.

She had a dog named Boo and she loved that dog like it was her youngest child.

At one of my grandmother's doctor's appointments we were told that she had breast cancer. This iterally hit me like a fist, but my grandmother took the news and said BUT GOD. I have always said that she was the strongest woman that I've ever known, and that fact remains. In reality, while I was being strong for her, she was being strong for me and the rest of the family. She eventually had to have her left breast removed. After that, I noticed a difference in her. She still tried to remain herself, but I knew my best friend very well. She didn't want to attend church or go anywhere else anymore. That broke my heart.

Due to her age, she never had chemo or radiation but she was taking medications for the cancer. She was most definitely a fighter with her cancer battle and life itself. My grandmother was called home on January 6, 2015. Although she didn't pass from breast cancer she left this world a fighter and a woman of God. She was the strength and the root of our family tree. She was a loving mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, cousin, and my best friend. We love and miss you so much! Until I'm with you again beautiful angel.

DENISE WILLIAMS My life changed in 2015 when the doctor told me I had cancer, and he recommended that I remove both breasts. I’m the mother of four children (three girls and one boy). I had to go home and tell my children and my family what the doctor said. I felt they took the news fairly well but, after surgery my middle daughter struggled with what I was going through. She was angry. I was angry! I was also depressed, and I suffered with anxiety. I closed myself off from people. I felt different, and less than. I was also going through a divorce, so I would think.

“Who will want me looking like this?” I eventually started to pray more and be patient. I started spending more time with my children and getting out the house. I decided to live the life God granted me because it could have been worst. I lost my breast, but I have lived to see my children give me five grand boys. I now have a new husband that loves every part of me.

Sometimes you have to really lose to win again.

In June 2012 (age 42), I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in my left breast. I was devastated! In August of that same year, I had a Lumpectomy done. I was told that I wasn't grounded properly during surgery and that resulted in an awful burn on my breast. We had to wait a few weeks for the burn to heal before I could start chemo. Chemo started bi-weekly in October 2012. It usually lasted for 4 hours but I was usually sick from it for 2-3 days. Due to the chemo, I lost all my hair. Following chemo was radiation on Monday-Friday for 15-20 minutes per session. I endured 35 treatments which caused burns on my chest.

Between my bald head and my burns, I felt so unattractive.

But God is amazing!

After all the treatment, I am cancer free! For 6 years, I was required to have 2 mammograms a year and take medications. Now I take no meds and I have mammograms and blood work done once a year.

I've been in remission for 12 years now and I'm feeling just fine.

I owe it all to GOD! I am a Breast Cancer Survivor!!!

CONNIE HOLLIE

When Connie Hollie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, she didn't know what the future held. Connie’s journey began in 2005 when she noticed a lump in her breast during a self-exam. “During a self-breast examination in 2005, I noticed a small lump in my breast. I immediately told my doctor. After the examination and a mammogram, the results were benign. One hurdle I thought was behind me forever, until I found another lump in my breast in 2013,” said Connie. About 8 years later, Connie noticed another lump in her breast. At first, she decided to ignore it because she believed it would be another benign result. “I was still in denial not knowing something serious was going on with my breast,” said Connie. About a year later, Connie’s aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. She then decided to take the leap and get tested once again. Only this time, the results were positive. “My thoughts immediately went to my family and my fear of leaving them alone. First, I broke the news to my husband, then my children and finally the rest of my family,” said Connie. Connie said she was initially worried about the future and the possibility of not being able to watch her grandchildren grow up. But that was not her fate.

Now, Connie is almost 10 years free of cancer and she said she credits God for healing her body.

“I laugh, I love, and I live another day to share my story and the goodness of Jesus Christ.”

JOHNETTA DAVIS KNOX On November 22, 2011, I got the worst news of my life. I had been diagnosed with HER2 Breast Cancer. I had no family member that had ever been diagnosed at that time. I had a mammogram at the end of April 2011 and my test results came back normal. Several months later I felt a lump in my upper left breast. I thought it was a cyst because those would occur often. My doctor would drain my cyst in her office but this time she couldn't. She wanted me to go to a specialist and when I arrived, he assured me that he believed there was nothing to be worried about. Little did we know, it couldn't be removed. He did a biopsy, and the results came back cancerous. My doctor told me that he wanted me to hurry up and go to whoever I wanted to because it was very aggressive.

I told him he was the one! I was scheduled 18 rounds of chemotherapy starting in December 2011 and ending in April 2012. On May 17, 2012, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and after recovering I had reconstructed surgery followed by 28 rounds of radiation. The road got tough but giving up wasn't an option. I had a 10 year old daughter and elderly parents that I had to fight to be with. I put it in God's hands and with the best support team ever, I MADE IT!! I’M A SURVIVOR!!!

MARY A. HENRY In 1996, my life was forever changed when my mother, Mary A. Henry, passed away from breast cancer at the age of 36. I was only 12 years old.

The journey began in August 1995, when my mom confided in me about a lump under her arm, asking me to keep it a secret. As time went on, misdiagnoses delayed critical treatment, and her health rapidly declined. Eventually, the devastating news came at the end of April 1996: my mom had Stage 4 breast cancer and was given six months to live. Despite her worsening condition, my mother tried to shield my brother and I from the severity of her illness. She displayed remarkable strength and resilience through surgeries, chemotherapy, and emotional turbulence. She remained loving. Even though my brother struggled to cope and started distancing himself. I found myself becoming rebellious and confused. In the summer of ’96 while vacationing with cousins up north, I was called back to be by my mother's side.

By November 1996, my mom’s condition had worsened. In her final moments, my mother was surrounded by family. As she began to take her last breaths, I sat on the dresser across from her watching her chest rise and fall. Losing her at such a pivotal age left me grappling with profound grief for 17 years and dealing with a missing piece of my heart. The strength and love that my mom had shown during her most difficult time became a guide in my life as I navigated the challenges of growing up without her, my best friend. The bond we shared throughout the years and in those final months shaped me into the person I would become. It taught me resilience and the importance of holding on to love through life's hardest moments.

“A Day for Black Poets”

by Kevil Tice I understand that I can’t possibly know EVERYTHING....but.....How in the world did I not know about Black Poetry Day? Seriously! This is a real day that I have never even heard of, until now, at the young age of forty AND five! I’ve been a poet for at least 30 of these years. Don’t ask how I found this out, because you should know by now that I never remember how or why I fell in The Rabbit Hole. I just kinda end up in one.

Black Poetry Day started around 1985 with a purpose of honoring the works of African American writers, more specifically, poets. Since then, it has been celebrated on October 17th each year. This day was set aside to pay homage to the countless literary contributions of African American poets.

Get this, the date October 17th was selected because of a brilliant man by the name of Jupiter Hammon.

Brace yourself! It was at this moment, I slipped into level two of The Rabbit Hole.

Mr. Hammon has been affectionately called the “Father of African American Literature” because in 1761 he became the first published African American poet in the United States. This is not to be confused with Phillis Wheatley being the first African American to publish an entire book of poetry in 1773.

Born on October 17, 1711, in Long Island, Hammon was the son of slaves at a place called Lloyd Manor. We now know this place as Lloyd Harbor, New York. Of course, records of his life are scarce because of the time period, but I was able to find enough to get a decent visual of who he was. At age 50....yes I said 50....Mr. Hammon became the definition of “it’s never too late,” when his first poem, “An Evening Thought. Salvation by Christ, with Penetential [sic] Cries:,” was published. Then, at the age of 68, he published his second piece, “An Address to Miss Phillis Wheatley.” Before his passing, he had successfully published 4 works of prose and 4 poetry pieces. At any age, that is a huge accomplishment, however at his age and during that time....BEYOND HUGE! The life and legacy of Jupiter Hammon is why Black Poetry Day is so important. We should all celebrate Mr. Hammon and the many others who have followed in his footsteps. Even though Black Poetry Day is celebrated all over the United States, Oregon is the ONLY STATE that has it marked as a state holiday.

Where are you from?

I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, spent 8 years in Lexington, Ky, and then I went to school in Marion, Al. I have resided in Tuscaloosa, Al since 1993.

What led you to writing your first play?

And what makes you keep creating?

I have always had an active imagination and been a lover of words. I came up in very humble beginnings, so in order to cope with the mundaneness of my reality, I would escape my life and enter the world of others by reading. Through doing so, a very creative mind was awakened. In 2012, I had a close friend ask me what was the one thing that I can do from sunup to sundown without getting paid for it. He said whatever that is, that’s your passion. Focus on that and find your way. For me, that was easy, writing. I’ve been going hard ever since.

The biggest challenges that I’ve faced is getting the support that I know I deserve. My cast member and I work extremely hard to perfect our productions. We spend countless hours and dollars. To look out in the audience, and it’s not a full house, is very disheartening.

What's next for you?

I want to continue to write in any capacity that I can. I have a few more plays in me, but my goals are to publish my second book in 2025 and two books a year over the next few years. Also, I plan to see my work on a grander stage. Maybe on TV or in the movies.

I’m also interested in motivational speaking and would love the opportunity to go wherever I can to speak to the youth and women across the country.

“Empowered by Prevention: A PREvivor’s Journey” Crystal Lassiter

Routine breast exams are something many of us are told to do, but we often don’t imagine the day when we feel something unexpected. For me, that moment came when I discovered a mass during one of my routine self-checks. The wave of anxiety was immediate, followed by a thousand “what ifs” racing through my mind.

Though it was scary, it was also a wake-up call. It reminded me of the importance of paying attention to my body, trusting my instincts, and taking charge of my health.

After two fine needle aspirations, we noticed that each time, the number of masses multiplied. The initial plan to “watch and see” turned into a situation where almost 70% of my tissue was impacted by masses. Although we believed them to be benign, reality began to set in: there was too much converge to really know the truth.

After a number of follow-up tests and consultations with specialists, I had to face a difficult but crucial decision: to move forward with a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy and total reconstruction. Though my doctors provided me with information and options, the decision was ultimately mine to make. I learned quickly that making choices about your health is deeply personal, and there’s no right or wrong—just what feels best for you. I spent the next few months prepping and praying, undergoing tests to monitor for mutations. From mastectomy to reconstruction, my attitude and faith remained rooted in the fact that not everyone is fortunate enough to be coined a PREvivor.

Clean margins and clear results reinforced my confidence in the decision I’d made to be proactive.

9:36 This was not a decision I made lightly. For a long time, I didn’t tell many people. I needed to process it on my own terms, without the well-intended but often overwhelming opinions of others. While I didn’t want to burden my loved ones with my fears and uncertainties, I also knew that I was not alone on this journey. When I was ready, I shared the news with a small group of close family and friends, and I am incredibly grateful for the support I received.

The path to this decision was not just about the discovery of masses. It was about understanding the power of self-advocacy and the need to prioritize my long-term health. Testing and follow-up care are essential, but so is trusting yourself to make the choices that feel right for you. I had to advocate for myself, ask hard questions, and navigate complex emotions. In doing so, I realized that being proactive is not about living in fear—it's about empowering yourself with the knowledge and options to prevent future risks.

I also learned that it’s okay to not have everything figured out right away. Deciding to undergo a prophylactic procedure is a profound and personal choice, one that requires reflection, courage, and trust in yourself. Even though I didn’t share my plans widely, I felt immense gratitude for being able to access this preventative care, knowing that it could make a significant difference in my future health. Having such an amazing support system made all the difference. My family and friends were a lifeline, providing comfort and encouragement, even when I wasn’t ready to talk about everything.

For anyone facing a similar decision, my hope is that my story encourages you to listen to your body, trust your instincts, and advocate for the care that’s best for you. Health decisions are personal, but you don’t have to make them alone. There’s power in taking control of your future and gratitude in recognizing the support systems that lift you up along the way.

I am thankful beyond words for the opportunity to take this preventative step, and for the love and strength of those who’ve stood by me. This journey has shown me that while we may not always be able to predict what’s ahead, we can face it with the support of others and the knowledge that we are making the best choices for ourselves.

Now on the healing side of reconstruction, I have felt the unmistakable hand of God guiding and healing me in ways I never imagined. His presence has been a constant source of strength, comforting me in moments of fear and uncertainty. I believe deeply that God is at work, not only healing my body but also renewing my spirit. Through my support system—family, friends, coworkers, and even the medical team —I’ve seen His love in action, reminding me that faith is not something we walk alone. Each kind word, and every prayer, has been a reminder that He uses those around us to reinforce His promise, lifting me up when I’ve felt weak and filling me with the peace that surpasses understanding. In every step, I know God’s hand is there, healing and guiding me toward wholeness.

What’s your name and how old are you?

Hi, my name is Kyla Terrell, and I am 13 years old.

What school do you attend?

I am an 8th grader at Eastwood Middle School.

What is your most valued accomplishments?

My most valued accomplishment would be writing a book at the early age of 12 and publishing at the age of 13.

What awards have you received?

I have received numerous awards for Student of the Month and A/B honor roll.

What is the main inspiration behind you book Screams Town?

I was inspired by many of my favorite horror movies and a manifestation that some of my favorite actors will someday read my book and I will be able to meet them.

What are your plans after high school?

After high school I'm going to be an actress and an author who publishes her own books.

Who or what inspires you to be who you are?

Ariana Greenblatt is one of my favorite actresses that inspires me. Sometimes, I think of my favorite actors or actresses, and I sculpt them into characters in my mind.

Sports Madness

College Football Mania

The most exciting time of the year is FINALLY here: FOOTBALL SEASON and I am so deliriously happy about it! We are only a few games in, and we have already had the privilege of watching some amazing match-ups in college football. Let’s talk about five of the most physical, exciting, nail biting, and thrilling games so far. #5 Alabama vs South Florida (week 2) The unranked South Florida Bulls didn’t seem too concerned that the Crimson Tide were favored to win by 30 points. I’m sure they felt like they were facing giants, but they used it as motivation to play a relatively complete game, by hanging in there, 13-14 going into the fourth quarter. And then the tide began to turn…

Alabama’s offense, led by quarterback Jalen Milroe, began to explode, scoring 21 unanswered points until the clock hit 00:00 with the final score being 42-16. #4 Oklahoma vs Auburn (week 4) This one will go down in history as one of the game’s that got away for the Auburn Tigers.

Auburn’s defense held Oklahoma to less than 30 yards and just two touchdowns. Auburn had possession of the ball longer. They had the momentum the entire game. They outplayed Oklahoma in all facets but blew it on a Sooner turnover in the fourth quarter that they could not take advantage of. Auburn blew an 11 point lead in the 4th quarter. A missed field goal, an interception, two unsuccessful drives were all keys factors that led to another Auburn loss. They were so close, yet so far away. #3 Kentucky vs Ole Miss (week 4) How in the world did the Kentucky Wildcats defeat The #6 Ole Miss Rebels 20-17? Kentucky’s defense forced fumbles, turnovers, and numerous 3 and outs which enabled them to take the lead with 2:25 left in the game on an Ole Miss fumble. But there was still enough time in the game for Ole Miss to win. They had to get in field goal range though. After an overturned call, Ole Miss attempted a 48 yard field goal that did not go in, and Kentucky was able to hold on to win against a team ranked in the nation’s top 6. Lane Kiffin was quoted as saying, “The game comes down at the end with us having a chance to win in every phase and we didn’t do it.

Beyond disappointing.”

9:36 #2 Colorado Buffalo vs Baylor Bears (week 3) “Come with me Hail Mary, run, quick see. What do we have here now…” (Hail Mary, Tupac Shakur, 1996).

At the last play of regulation, Shedeur Sanders let the football fly and LaJohntay Wester caught the 43 yard Hail Mary in the end zone taking the game into overtime and the fans went CRAZY! Colorado scored first In overtime but the icing on the cake came when The Travis Hunter forced a fumble at the goal line with the ball rolling out of the end zone defeating the Bears 38-31.

Shedeur Sanders, who has been in Heisman conversation, threw for 25-41, 341 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Travis Hunter did an outstanding job on both sides of the ball. #1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs Georgia Bulldogs (week 4) Everyone anticipated that this was going to be an epic rematch of the SEC Championship to remember. The Tide was the team that broke Georgia’s 28 regular SEC winning streak and eliminated their chance to make it to the playoffs last year, so Georgia came to Tuscaloosa with a chip on their shoulder. Even still, The Crimson Tide went into this game as the underdog but The Tide would not be denied; quickly jumping to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, up 28-0 in thesecond quarter, and 30-7 at halftime. Jalen Milroe was unstoppable going 27-33 of completion and 374 yards.

Ryan Williams, the 17 year old phenomenon, had 6 receptions and 177 yards, that included 1 remarkable pass that he had to juggle to catch, managing to hold on to and gain several yards showcasing his amazing athleticism. But it was far from over. Georgia came back after halftime, made all the adjustments, and fought back one play at a time to chip away at Alabama’s lead. Carson Beck clearly stepped into a phone booth, put on his superman cape, and gave his team every opportunity to get back into the game. With 2:31 seconds left in the game, Beck threw a 67 yard touchdown to Dillion Bell and they took the lead 34-33 shocking everyone who watched on in disbelief. 30 seconds later, on the very next play, Milroe threw a deep ball down the sideline to Ryan Williams once again. He spun out of a tackle and out ran the Georgia safety to a 75 yard touchdown to give the Tide a 39-34 lead and then a 41-34 lead after a 2-point conversion. But there was still time….2:18 to be exact. After true freshman Zabien Brown picked off Carson Beck in the endzone with 43 seconds left…GAME OVER. And as Bama fans all over the world love to say: ROLL TIDE! Epic finish!

What categorizes someone as a good/bad parent?

Betty Parents being unselfish enough to sacrifice time, energy, and effort so they can teach their children to be contributing members of society.

Michael What makes you a good parent is the impact you have on your children. When they mess up, do you encourage them to make better decisions or do you belittle them and make them feel like they are a failure? When they achieve something, do you celebrate their accomplishments or do you make their success about you? Do you show up in a loving, caring, and nurturing way? Or do you live your life and let them get in where they fit in? Do they know that you’ll have their backs no matter what or are you another one of life’s obstacles that your children have to navigate? Providing for a child isn’t only financial. In fact, I’ll argue that finances is the least important factor in raising children who know that they are loved, adored, and cared for!

Jay Sacrificing my life/time. For the betterment of my child. There was a time that I didn’t know that. I thank God I chose strong women that were able to cover for me when I had no sense. They kept my kids close to God. They did homework. They stayed up late when they were sick. I had no clue what it was to be a father. Maybe cause I never saw one. Maybe not. Our Bible teaches us to TRAIN a child. Not watch them grow up. Not raise them. BUT TRAIN THEM. How could I train them when I was chasing a fantasy? The pride that I felt when they made A’s and B’s didn’t even belong to me.

When or if they fell below grade level (not saying they did) the shame or anger that I felt then should have been intensified by 100 because it was my fault due to lack of nurturing, guidance and most importantly time. So to the parents that feel any of what I said just know… IT AINT OVER BABY!! WE CAN CHANGE!! OUR KIDS NEED US NOW MORE THAN EVER!!
