My cholesterol has recently increased. I am trying to avoid prescription medication. How can I lower it naturally?
Cholesterol is necessary for many cellular processes in the body, including making new cells and hormones. However, too much cholesterol, especially “bad” cholesterol (known as LDL) in the blood can lead to the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels. This plaque buildup can lead to heart problems, including heart attacks and strokes. Fortunately, you can make lifestyle choices that can help you keep your cholesterol levels in the healthy range:

Eat foods that can help lower LDL cholesterol. Opt for foods like oatmeal, salmon, beans, whole grains, nuts, and high-fiber foods (bananas, peaches, and apples, for example). These foods can help control your cholesterol levels. Stay away from foods that can elevate your cholesterol levels, such as whole-fat dairy products, red meat, margarine, and sugary snacks like store-bought cookies. Reduce saturated fats and eliminate trans fats in your diet.
Exercise regularly. Exercise will help you keep your heart happy and your cholesterol down. Aim for 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise three to four times a week.
Take Supplements. The following are all available without a prescription and have been shown to either lower cholesterol or benefit your heart: soluble fiber like psyllium, phytosterols, berberine, soy protein, red yeast rice, and fish oil.
Calabasas Pharmacy offers cholesterol testing so you can check your numbers and see if the changes you’ve been making are giving you the results you want.

Integrating health and beauty from the inside out

In the heart of Calabasas, Dr. Lori Musto of Musto Medical is redefining patient care with a comprehensive, holistic approach that aims to uncover the root causes of health concerns rather than just managing symptoms. She approaches beauty from a cellular level by integrating regenerative medicine, hormonal health, and advanced biohacking to treat the root causes of aging rather than just its external symptoms.
A cornerstone of her practice is advanced micronutrient testing. Dr. Musto utilizes sophisticated testing methods, such as intracellular nutrient status, to conduct a thorough analysis of a patient’s vitamin and mineral levels.
Key aspects of micronutrient testing— intracellular vs. extracellular levels
Most standard lab tests only measure extracellular (serum) levels, which can fluctuate based on recent diet or hydration levels. Advanced tests, like the panels used by Dr. Musto, offer the most accurate, scientifically proven method of assessing intracellular deficiencies, providing a more accurate, long-term picture of the body’s nutritional status and how efficiently cells use these nutrients, enzymes, minerals, proteins, and cofactors for metabolism. A person’s entire state of health begins with a single cell. The cumulative effect of cellular deficiencies greatly affects health and well-being.

Micronutrient testing typically involves a simple blood draw. The samples are sent to a specialized lab for analysis, and the results provide a detailed report highlighting any deficiencies or imbalances. This report also provides Dr. Musto with a comprehensive analysis of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients within the person’s cells to identify deficiencies, allowing for highly personalized treatment plans involving targeted dietary changes, specific supplements, or other therapies (like IV nutrient therapy) to restore balance and optimize health.
Armed with this knowledge and these insights, Dr. Musto also provides bio-identical hormone replacement therapy that can have a dramatic effect on physical appearance, including weight loss, increased muscle mass, and improved skin elasticity. l

“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”

If there are angels walking among us, they rarely announce themselves. They appear quietly, in the steady rhythm of compassion, in the simple decision to care for something that cannot speak for itself. They show up early in the morning, long before most of the world is awake, feeding animals, cleaning kennels, answering calls, and doing the quiet work that keeps kindness alive.
Alison Eastwood has built her life around that quiet work. Her story is not only about animal rescue. It is a story about love, purpose, and discovering the deeper meaning of a life lived in service to something beyond herself.
There was a moment, Alison recalls, when everything in her life began to shift.

She was in her late 30s—a time when many people begin to reflect on where they have been and where they are going. She had spent years working in film and television, navigating the unpredictable rhythm of the entertainment industry, waiting for roles, waiting for the next project, waiting for someone else to decide when the next opportunity might come.
Somewhere in that waiting, she began to ask herself a deeper question: “What is my legacy going to be?” She remembers thinking, “What am I going to do with my life that gives it meaning?” At nearly the same time, another life-changing moment happened in her world. She met the man who would become her husband. “When you know, you know,” Alison says with a warm laugh.
But what she recognized in him was more than love. It was alignment. A shared sense of purpose. When she speaks about that moment, she closes her eyes for a second and takes a slow breath, as if returning to it.
“We shared the same ideas about life,” she says. “We both loved animals. We both wanted to give back. We both wanted to do something meaningful.”
“What is my legacy going to be? What am I going to do with my life that gives it meaning?”
In that moment, the path ahead began to reveal itself. Animals had always been close to Alison’s heart. But as she learned more about the realities of the shelter system—the overcrowding, the neglect, the staggering number of animals euthanized simply because there were not enough homes—her love began to transform into something deeper, a calling.
“I realized there was a huge problem in our shelter system,” says Alison. “And I asked myself—what can I do to be part of the solution?” That question eventually led to the creation of the Eastwood Ranch Foundation, a nonprofit rescue organization dedicated to saving animals from high-kill shelters and finding them safe, loving homes.

What began as an idea has grown into nearly 15 years of tireless work. But Alison is quick to point out that this work did not come easily. “I live out of gratitude,” she says. “I feel incredibly blessed. But this foundation has been built through blood, sweat, and tears.”
Eastwood Ranch is a public 501(c)(3) charity, supported by donations, volunteers, and a community that continues to grow around its mission.
“This is something that came out of my own passion,” Alison explains. “It’s not something that was just handed to me.
“This is something that came out of my own passion.”

I’ve had to knock on a lot of doors, ask for help, and raise the money to keep it going.” And the work is constant.
Every morning begins early at home, where Alison and her husband care for their own lively pack of four dogs and four cats before heading to the rescue to begin the day again.
“Thank God for my husband,” she laughs. “We split the chores.” Feeding, cleaning, walking, training, fundraising, answering calls—the list never really ends. There are medical bills for animals that arrive injured or sick. There are behavioral specialists who help rehabilitate traumatized dogs. There are trainers, volunteers, adoption coordinators, and the daily costs of running a rescue facility.
“It’s a daily grind,” Alison admits. “And most days it’s hard.” Fundraising, in particular, is something that she’s had to learn over time. “There are days where I think I just can’t send one more email asking for help.” But she keeps going because the animals depend on it.
Today, the rescue is supported by a powerful network of volunteers—more than 200 people—who give their time walking dogs, cleaning litter boxes, playing with cats, and simply offering love to animals that may have never known kindness before. “Volunteering is incredibly important,” Alison explains. “When people show up, they’re giving something that matters just as much as money. They’re giving their time. Fostering animals has also become a vital part of the rescue’s mission. Animals that arrive from shelters often carry emotional scars. Many have experienced neglect, abuse, or chaotic environments that leave them frightened and unsure. A foster home gives them a chance to experience what a real home feels like. It also helps us understand their personality so we can find the right forever family.” Alison calls her adoption coordinators “matchmakers,” carefully pairing each animal with the home that will give them the best possible life.
“At its heart,” Alison says, “the rescue is about connection.” For her personally, service has also been a path to healing. Alison explains that being of service to people and to animals has become one of the most important anchors in her life. “When I’m helping someone else, or helping an animal, I’m not stuck in my own head,” she
says. “Connection is what heals us.” And connection, she believes, happens in small moments.
A volunteer walking a dog on a quiet morning. A frightened cat finally learning to trust again. A rescued animal finding a forever home.
Each one creates a ripple of kindness that extends far beyond the rescue walls. Listening to Alison speak, you begin to feel something settle inside you. A calm. A reminder that making a difference does not always require something grand. Sometimes it begins with something simple.
Take a moment.
Take a breath.
Make a call.
Schedule a visit.
Walk a dog. Pet a cat.
Offer a small donation.
Sometimes helping another living being heals something inside us. Alison’s story reminds me of the film It’s a Wonderful Life. But Alison Eastwood is not George Bailey. She is Clarence— the angel who appears quietly, reminding us that kindness matters, that compassion matters, and that the smallest act of service can change the course of a life. And if you listen closely, on a quiet morning at the rescue, you might almost hear it—the soft sound of a bell ringing...because Alison Eastwood has earned her wings.

Before there were gates, before there were estates, before the land carried the weight of architecture and legacy, there was only soil—open, breathing, waiting. Kasey Walker has spent her life listening to it.
She does not arrive with spectacle. She arrives quietly, walking the perimeter of a property long before anyone else sees its future. She studies the slope beneath her feet, the direction of the wind, the way the light settles across the earth at the end of the day. Because when you are raised by farmers, you understand something most developers never will—that land is not empty. It holds memory. It holds truth. It holds possibility.
Kasey was born into that understanding. Her parents lived by the rhythm of the seasons, their hands shaped by work that could not be rushed. They knew that nothing lasting could be forced, only cultivated. The land provided, but it also demanded patience, humility, and care. Those lessons did not fade when Kasey stepped into the world of development. They became the foundation beneath everything she would build.
Kasey is most proud of the land that would one day become part of Hidden Hills history—a parcel she developed and prepared long before the world recognized its significance. She stood at its beginning, guiding it through the quiet and complex process of entitlement, protecting its integrity. That same property was later acquired by The Weeknd and ultimately sold to Madonna in 2021, continuing its evolution into one of the community’s most recognized estates. For Kasey, the pride is not in the celebrity or the transaction but in knowing she was there at the origin, when it was still only earth and possibility, helping shape the foundation upon which its legacy would rise.

Kasey Walker’s work lives at the threshold between what is and what will be.

In Hidden Hills, five open acres once carried only the sound of horses and wind. The original ranch had belonged to Miley Cyrus, who preserved its equestrian roots during her ownership. Kasey later purchased the property directly from Cyrus, recognizing its long-term potential beneath its aging structures, returning the land to its most elemental state and undertaking the careful process of developing and entitling the parcel for its next chapter. Only after the land had been cleared, protected, and prepared did Kylie Jenner become interested in the property. The two ultimately made the deal. But long before plans existed, it was simply soil beneath Kasey’s boots.
This is where Kasey’s work lives: at the threshold between what is and what will be. She does not see parcels as commodities. She sees responsibility. She understands that what rises on the land will outlast her—that families will gather there, that children will grow there, and that extraordinary lives will unfold atop the decisions made before their arrival.
Kasey is deliberate in choosing the people who stand beside her. Her team is not simply a collection of contractors, engineers, and consultants; they are caretakers of the soil itself. She surrounds herself with those who understand that land must be respected before it is shaped, people who recognize the privilege and responsibility of preparing ground that will hold future lives. Every survey, every approval, every measured decision reflects a shared understanding that they are not just building structures; they are protecting something irreplaceable.
There is a steadiness about Kasey, the kind forged through patience rather than urgency. In an industry defined by scale and speed, she moves with restraint. She trusts instinct over noise. She understands that permanence cannot be rushed.
As a woman shaping terrain defined by force and machinery, Kasey’s strength has never required announcement. She leads through vision, through endurance, through the quiet certainty of someone who knows exactly where she stands. Her authority comes not from claiming the land but from honoring it.
Kasey understands something developers sometimes often forget— that we do not own the earth. We care for it while we can. The soil remembers the open sky. The soil remembers horses running freely. The soil remembers the woman who stood there first and believed in its future. Kasey Walker never left her roots behind—she carried them forward, into every hillside, every risk, every moment, standing alone on land waiting to become something more.
Because legacy does not begin when a home is built. It begins with the quiet force willing to stand on empty ground and see everything it can become. l

In a community that values thoughtful design, elevated wellness, and mindful living, healthcare experiences should feel as purposefully curated as the lifestyles they support. At Oaks Dental Calabasas, dental care has been reimagined as a truly bespoke experience— blending advanced clinical innovation with aesthetic artistry and genuine comfort.
Guiding this philosophy are Dr. Kourosh Keihani and Dr. Tariq Jabaiti, whose collaborative vision merges modern technology mastery with a deeply patient-centered approach.
Dr. Kourosh Keihani and Dr. Tariq Jabaiti earned their degrees from the USC School of Dentistry, where Dr. Jabaiti is an exfaculty professor. They both regularly participate in ongoing training for advanced techniques such as digital smile design, minimally invasive procedures, and full-mouth rehabilitation.
Based on a decade of success at their practice in Beverly Hills, they decided to open Oaks Dental in Calabasas.

Their approach to dentistry reflects both technical mastery and an artistic sensibility—a balance that makes cosmetic and restorative dentistry a cornerstone of their practice. Specializing in veneers, smile rehabilitation, and implant-supported restorations, Dr. Keihani and Dr. Jabaiti focus on what they believe is essential when designing a smile—results that look natural, balanced, and uniquely suited to each individual.
“A smile should look like it belongs to you,” explains Dr. Keihani.
“Every smile has its own personality. My goal is to enhance it while preserving what makes it authentically yours.”
Another guiding principle at Oaks Dental is a strong emphasis on functional and preventative dentistry, focusing on early diagnosis, structural preservation, and long-term oral health planning.
“Oral health plays a significant role in overall wellness,” notes Dr. Jabaiti. “When we address concerns early, we can often prevent more complex treatment later.”
Beyond providing clinical excellence, their goal is to provide concierge-level service tailored to meet each patient’s needs.
“We don’t offer a one-size-fits-all method,” notes Dr. Jabaiti. “Our patient-focused approach goes above and beyond to understand each patient’s needs.”
The doctors’ synergistic care styles let Oaks Dental offer a full spectrum of services, allowing patients to maintain continuity of care under one familiar roof with a team they trust. Preventative cleaning, Invisalign treatment, crowns and bridges, cosmetic veneers, whitening, dental implants, root canals, and full-mouth restorations are all part of their integrated practice.
Dental implant treatment is one of the dental spa’s most transformative specialties, restoring both aesthetics and function with exceptional stability and longevity. Incorporating digital smile design and advanced 3D imaging, the doctors allow patients to preview treatment outcomes while ensuring exceptional accuracy and comfort throughout every step of the process.
“Implants allow us to rebuild smiles in a way that feels stable and natural,” Dr. Keihani shares. “Seeing the impact on a patient’s confidence and quality of life—how they eat, speak, smile—is the ultimate reward.”
Serving families throughout Calabasas and the surrounding Conejo Valley, Oaks Dental has grown largely through word-of-mouth referrals—a testament to the quality time and personal relationships the doctors prioritize. For Dr. Keihani and Dr. Jabaiti, dentistry extends beyond the procedures. It’s about helping patients maintain confidence, comfort, and health over time. That philosophy ensures that every smile is not just cared for but thoughtfully crafted to last. l

LVUSD 4TH ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

LVUSD’s Battle of the Bands rocked Agoura Hills’ Canyon Club on February 1st. Presented by THE Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools, the high-energy fundraiser was hosted by ALT 98.7’s Ted Stryker and featured celebrity judges Tommy London and Britt Lightning. Led by Event Chair Todd Gillman and Co-Chair Michelle Freedman, the night included a music-themed silent auction to support local schools. Agoura High’s Alien Fingers took home the top prize. Congrats to the entire board of THE Foundation for successfully combining student talent with community philanthropy to benefit all LVUSD schools.

Students in the Oaks Christian Institute of Health Science lived out their school motto, “Minds for Leadership and Hearts for Service,” as part of an incredible health and wellness service trip, led by Institute Director Dr. Bryan Wong. In early second semester, the group partnered with Project Mañana in the Dominican Republic for a medical and dental operative, providing high-quality care to more than 200 adults and children. Alongside physicians, students triaged patients, provided basic care, and shadowed medical professionals to learn proper treatment techniques—gaining real-world insight into global medical needs and the challenges of delivering healthcare in cross-cultural settings.

Hidden Hills marked a milestone with its 30th annual Valentine’s Charity Musicale, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Quorum. Written and directed by Nicole Parker, with musical direction by David Lamoureux, the original production featured 17 songs woven into a witty tale of quarreling HOA committee members racing to stop a celebrity neighbor’s over-the-top party from colliding with the theater’s anniversary gala. The spirited cast delivered lively vocals and plenty of laughs, charming audiences with humor and heart, followed by a celebratory reception honoring 25 years of the community theater’s legacy. The show has grown from a modest fundraiser created by Bonnie and David Frank in 1996 into a beloved tradition, often featuring celebrity residents, including John Stamos, who welcomed audiences this year. In an inspiring testament to Hidden Hills’ generous spirit, nearly $15,000 was raised with 100% of the proceeds shared between the California Department of Education Disaster Relief Fund, Guide Dogs of America, and Habitat for Humanity.

“When you hire me, you get me: local knowledge, direct representation, and a focused strategy from start to finish.”
David Watkins has built his real estate practice in Calabasas and Hidden Hills the same way he built his life here, through consistency, accountability, and deep local knowledge. A longtime Calabasas resident, David raised his daughters in the community and watched them move through the Las Virgenes Unified School District. That firsthand experience gives him a clear understanding of the neighborhoods, schools, and lifestyle that influence home values throughout the 91302 market.
For more than 25 years, David has advised buyers and sellers through multiple real estate cycles in Calabasas and Hidden Hills. His approach focuses on the details that determine the outcome of a sale, including pricing strategy, property positioning, buyer demand, and the timing of when a home comes to market. Understanding those nuances is where hyper local market knowledge becomes critical to achieving a strong result. In an industry increasingly built around large teams, David provides direct, principal-led representation by design. Clients work directly with him from the initial strategy discussion through negotiations and closing. In Hidden Hills, horses outnumber streetlights and neighbors greet each other on winding trails. In December 1986, Cindy and Steve Bond found a home here when their daughter Ashlee was only 18 months old. Their son arrived a few years later, and they immersed themselves in the community’s unique blend of privacy and creative energy. Cindy is grateful for the sanctuary provided and the relationships they developed with industry neighbors who supported her in the arts. During her successful career as CEO and founder of Mission Pictures International, Cindy produced, marketed, financed, and sold over 200 film and television projects that have touched millions of viewers worldwide.

“I’ve never taken Hidden Hills for granted for a moment,” says Cindy. “You can write, produce, market, and distribute a movie and never leave the gates. Yet it also gives you space to breathe, walk, think, and create.”
The balance between reflection and ambition has defined Cindy’s life and career, which began far from the glamour of Hollywood. She was an only child raised in Sacramento by her grandparents. She found refuge in classic films that she watched with her grandmother, a huge movie buff. They immersed themselves in Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals and great epics like Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments
At first, filmmaking wasn’t the plan. After a few years of college, Cindy was on track to become a professional golfer while also modeling and studying acting in Los Angeles. It was in acting class that she discovered that her true passion was

storytelling, just not in front of the camera. She felt so comfortable when she got behind the camera that she knew that’s where she belonged.
Producing inspirational movies that are rooted in hope, forgiveness, and redemption resulted in Cindy becoming a part of a small group of modern pioneers of the faith-based film movement of the 1990s. Using an internal checklist as her guide, Cindy gravitates towards true stories with a worldview that offers both meaning and an entertaining escape. Emotional authenticity is essential, and she knows that when she cares deeply about the characters, the audience will too. Cindy explains that she never focuses on the degradation of the human condition. After the credits roll, she wants people to leave the movie theater feeling uplifted, hopeful, and inspired.
Cindy was called to make a series of music-driven movies based on iconic songs of faith. The most recent, I Can Only Imagine 2 , playing in theaters nationwide, follows the next chapter in singer Bart Millard’s life after he wrote the best-selling Christian single of all time. Even though he is at the height of his success and living the dream touring sold-out arenas with the Christian rock band MercyMe, he battles the pressures of fame, fatherhood, illness, and his past. New band member Tim Timmons offers guidance that helps Bart better manage his life. The sequel to the 2018 hit
movie I Can Only Imagine is the heartfelt true story behind the second hit by MercyMe. It balances grief with gratitude, reminding audiences that even in life’s darkest storms, all can be well with one’s soul.
I Can Only Imagine 2 is the perfect blend of laughter and tears—in line with Cindy’s calling of producing tales in which good triumphs over evil during the hills and valleys of life. Her mission goes beyond entertainment to remind people we are not alone. She calls herself a “media missionary,” driven by a desire to create stories that uplift and heal the human spirit. Her film Redeeming Love (2022) is based on the novel by Francine Rivers and tackles human trafficking and redemption. After its release through Universal Pictures, Cindy helped launch The Redeeming Love Sanctuary, a nonprofit foundation that provides grants to organizations that help trafficked survivors.
Equally passionate about encouraging women to pursue careers in film, Cindy asserts that there’s much opportunity since they make the majority of media decisions in households. There aren’t enough women directing, writing, or producing movies so she shares some advice: Boldly take steps forward. Learn everything you can both creatively and financially. Build relationships. And tell stories you are passionate about.

Hidden Hills is a treasure, says Cindy. She takes daily walks with her beloved husband, Steve, whom she’s been married to for more than four decades. Widely known from starring on General Hospital, Steve remains her creative partner, side by side with her through everything. Their daughter, Ashlee, began training in their backyard arena at age 3, leading her to start competing at age 6 and resulting in her going for the gold as a show jumper in the Paris and Tokyo Olympics.
“It’s humbling,” Cindy says. “We’re so blessed to live here. That gratitude fuels everything I do.”
Today, Ashlee is married to Roy, is mother to Scottie, and is working towards qualifying to compete in her third Olympics in Los Angeles. The Bond family includes three generations who love the equestrian landscape and soaking in the peace of the artistic community.
At home, Cindy is the friendly neighbor who walks the trails, the devoted wife, the grandmother, and the mother—always primed for the next story. From a young girl watching movies with her grandmother to an accomplished executive responsible for entertaining millions with features that bring goodness into the world, Cindy Bond’s journey reflects deep purpose and perseverance. Movies may have a hold on her heart, but family and faith remain the center of her world. l

Stunts Unlimited members were on deck when the attack of December 7th, 1941, was recreated for Pearl Harbor (2001).

If you hear a mysterious crashing noise coming from the house next door, it may just be your neighbor, the stuntperson, practicing a fall.
Hollywood’s unsung heroes—the men and women who risk injury for on-screen thrills—live all around us, with the film and TV industry’s most elite action-performer organization, Stunts Unlimited (SU), headquartered in Calabasas.
Stunts Unlimited began in 1970 and quickly established an excellent reputation for safety and professional execution of exciting and risky stunt work.
From Burt Reynolds’ early classic favorites Gator, Smokey and the Bandit, and Hooper to Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible franchise, Stunts Unlimited has been leading the way at every stage.
Tradition, trust, and family ties run deep at the association, with two stunt people with the last names of Barnett, Picerni, Epper, and Howell; three from the Gill family; and four with the surname of Gilbert.

Stunts Unlimited members handled the action for (top to bottom): Lethal Weapon 4, The Day After Tomorrow, Captain America, and falling out of a plane in Iron Man 3.

Flying vehicles are a specialty of Stunts Unlimited. Top: A Hummer H1 goes airborne in Torque. Middle: Debbie Evans doubles for Carrie Ann Moss’s Trinity character in The Matrix Reloaded. Below: A full-size school bus does a complete flip in Terminator: Genisys.

The group separated itself from other stunt organizations early on with a commitment to training and safety led by the three co-founders: Hal Needham, Glen Wilder, and Ronnie Rondell. Needham led the way by holding training sessions on weekends for stunts involving cars, motorcycles, horses, high falls, burns, and more. This resulted in a handpicked group of stunt professionals who could do everything and do it well. They practiced and innovated new ways to bring action to the screen, and with all the bumps, bruises and sprains, a new level of professionalism was born.
Their stellar innovations include mounting a custom-designed cannon inside a car to produce multiple rolls during a planned crash, a nitrogen-charged pneumatic device that pulls a stuntperson across a room when hit by something, and an air ram that a performer can step on to go flying through the air in a predictable and controlled manner.
“I’ve only been knocked out nine times,” says longtime SU member Jack Gill. “When you hit 15 or 20 knockouts, it’s time to retire. I’ve broken my back twice, my neck once, and I’ve got pins in various limbs. I love this business, and it hasn’t killed me yet.”
They’ve worked on thousands of movies and shows—and whether falling 10 stories, flying a car through the air, engaging in fistfights galore, or being set on fire, it’s all just another day at the office for the men and women of Stunts Unlimited.

Jimmy Roberts of Stunts Unlimited was one of the motorcycle stunt riders chasing Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
Brian Rooney Brian Rooney is proud to serve as a historian and archivist for the Calabasas Library. He is the author of the bestselling local history book Three Magical Miles, now in its 5th edition, and is an awardwinning documentarian for his film on the historic 20th Century Fox movie ranch.
