Ivana Šrámková (Šolcová) passed through the school of professor Stanislav Libenský, if we are to name a few personalities who had a significant impact on the development of glass jewellery and Czech glass sculpture. The tuition in the studios of Vladimír Kopecký and Ilja Bílek ran in a similar vein, and therefore these teachers gave the glass scene a number of quality personalities, incl. Lada Semecká, Alena Matějka, Klára Horáčková, Luba Bakičová, Dagmar Petrovická, Irena Czepcová, Eva Nováková and Zuzana Kubelková, who had gained recognition both domestically and abroad. While some of the female artists and glassmakers in the West are capable of openly addressing issues of their gender, search for own identity, criticism of discrimination, men’s sexual aggression, abuse or the problem of domestic violence and deal with motherhood or hormonal determinants of women’s life, incl. menstruation cycle, their Czech colleagues are not dealing with these issues in their art projects (so far?). Czech female glass scene has always been closer to abstraction, i.e. to suppressing the story, although it did not refuse postmodern grotesque and humour.

Czech female glassmakers are put off from dealing with intimate female questions too literally by their personal introvert nature, rather than by conservatism. Another major factor until 1989 was the tacit social agreement that there were much more fundamental issues to thematise than gender balance. Female Czech glassmakers aimed rather to contribute to the emancipation of glassmaking from the borders of socialist realism and the central controlled culture. The personal goal of most of them was to put experiments using glass on a par with fine art, which many have managed to do excellently, even though glass art remains excluded from visual art to this day. And last but not least – feminism is not a very popular term among Czech women and is filled with other content than abroad. As Jiřina Žertová has commented: We did not call ourselves feminists, but we all probably were!

Sklo a jeho rozmanité použití se stalo pro mnoho moderních architektů 20. století nedílnou součástí realizace programu modernistických konceptů bydlení i dalších funkčních typologií. S moderními možnostmi tvarovat sklo do nespočtu technologicky inovativních forem se stala jeho transparence a lesk jedním z dominantních rysů moderní éry architektury a designu. Následujících dvacet méně známých příkladů moderní architektury odkrývá nečekané detaily a překvapivá konstrukční řešení, ve kterých sklo hraje hlavní roli.

Glass in 20th Century Architecture and Interiors

For many modern architects of the 20th century, glass and its diverse applications have become an integral part of the realisation of modernist housing concepts and other functional typologies.

With modern possibilities to shape glass into countless technologically innovative forms, its transparency and shine have become one of the dominant features of the modern era of architecture and design. The following 20 lesser-known examples of modern architecture reveal unexpected details and surprising design solutions in which glass plays the starring role.

Dům Sybolda van Ravesteyna se nachází jen několik málo metrů od známého Domu Rietvelda a Schröderové, který postavil Gerrit Thomas Rietveld v roce 1924. Malý, ale rafinovaný a překvapivý dům holandského architekta byl po rozsáhlé rekonstrukci v loňském roce zpřístupněn veřejnosti. Dobový interiér je vybaven unikátními na míru navrženými vestavěnými prvky. V přízemí domu se nachází jednolitý prostor obývacího pokoje a pracovny, který je rytmizován důmyslným vestavěným nábytkem, jako je i tento konzolový stolek s dynamicky tvarovanými skleněnými policemi, které charakterizují neortodoxní neobarokní styl, tak typický pro Sybolda van Ravesteyna.

Sybold van Ravesteyn's house is located just a few meters from the famous Rietveld Schröder House, built by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1924. The Dutch architect's small but refined and surprising house was opened to the public last year, following extensive renovation. The period interior is equipped with unique tailor-made built-in elements. The ground floor features a compact living room and study room, which is rhythmised by sophisticated built-in furniture, incl. this console table with dynamically shaped glass shelves that characterise the unorthodox neo-baroque style, so typical of Sybold van Ravesteyn.

Historie kulturního centra Gürzenich ve starém městě v Kolíně nad Rýnem sahá až do 15. století. Bývalý palác rodiny Gürzenichů byl využíván ke kulturním účelům již od 19. století. Během druhé světové války byla téměř celá budova zničena bombardováním a následně v letech 1952 až 1955 zcela přestavěna architektem Rudolfem Schwarzem, který na rekonstrukci spolupracoval s Karlem Bandem. Romantické motivy symbolických detailů pohádkového charakteru doplňují návrhy světelného systému v podobě koruny stromu, elegantně tvarované zábradlí či část fasády tvořená abstraktní vitráží zasazenou v betonu.

The history of the Gürzenich Cultural Centre in Cologne's old town dates back to the 15th century.

The former palace of the Gürzenich family was used for cultural purposes since the 19th century. During World War Two, almost the entire building was destroyed by bombing and then completely rebuilt from 1952 to 1955 by architect Rudolf Schwarz, who cooperated on the reconstruction with Karel Band.

Romantic motifs of fairy-tale-like symbolic details are complemented by lighting system designs in the form of a tree crown, elegantly shaped railing or a part of the facade formed by abstract vitrage set in concrete.

Obchodní dům Bullock Wilshire v Los Angeles byl navržen činorodou architektonickou kanceláří Johna a Donalda Parkinsonových v roce 1929. Největší pozornost byla věnována především výzdobě spektakulárních interiérů v tehdejším módním stylu art deco. Současně na nich pracovalo několik designérů, včetně Eleanory Lemaire a Jocka Peterse, kteří se postarali o desítky na míru řešených detailů. Doplňovaly tehdy noblesní butikové prostředí, které platilo za nejlepší obchodní dům své éry na západním pobřeží USA. Jeden z nejpřekvapivějších detailů najdete v přízemním oddělení sportovního oblečení.

Artdecové hodiny vyrobené ze skleněných destiček s kubizujícími dekory navrhl Gjura Stojana. Nedávno byly interiéry obchodního domu obnoveny a jeho prostory slouží soukromé právní škole.

The Bullocks Wilshire department store in Los A ­ ngeles was designed by John and Donald Parkinson's creative architectural studio in 1929. Biggest attention was paid to the decoration of spectacular interiors in the then Art Deco fashion. Several designers worked simultaneously on the interiors, incl. Eleanor Lemaire and Jocka Peters, who took care of dozens of custom-tailored details. These have supplemented the noble boutique environment, regarded as the best department store of its era on the US west shore.

One of the most surprising details may be found in the ground floor sportswear department. The Art Deco watch made of glass plates with cubic decors was designed by Gjura Stojana. The department store's interiors have recently been restored and its premises serve a private law school.

Habib Bourguiba byl prvním prezidentem nezávislého Tunisu. V roce 1960 oslovil francouzského architekta Oliviera Clémenta Cacouba, aby pro něj navrhl letní rezidence ve Skanes nedaleko města Monastir. Cacoub vytvořil modernistický palác s působivou perforovanou fasádou a mohutnou zakřivenou střechou. Interiéry moderního paláce si vzali na starosti francouzští dekoratéři Maxime Old, Raphaël a André Leleu, kteří ve svém návrhu propojili eleganci a zdobnost art deca s abstraktním modernismem a vytvořili jeden z nejpůsobivějších interiérů své éry, dodnes kompletně zachovaný. V jedné z ložnic vytvořil kultovní francouzský dekoratér Raphaël unikátní lakovaný toaletní stolek, podepřený prosvícenou plastikou z hutního skla.

Habib Bourguiba was the first president of independent Tunisia. In 1960 he asked French architect O ­ livier Clément Cacoub to design a summer residence for him in Skanes near Monastir. Cacoub created a modernist palace with an impressive perforated facade and a massive curved roof. The interiors of the modern palace were designed by French decorators ­Maxime Old, Raphaël and André Leleu, who combined in their design Art Deco's elegance and ornamentation with abstract modernism and created one of the most impressive interiors of their era, fully preserved to this day. Iconic French decorator Raphaël created a unique lacquered dressing table, backed by a lit glass sculpture, in one of the bedrooms.

Někdy se o něm hovoří jako o marockém Oscarovi Niemeyerovi. Jean-François Zevaco byl nejaktivnější ze zakladatelské generace modernistických architektů v Maroku. Po studiu v Paříži se usadil v Casablance, kde navrhoval luxusní privátní rezidence, školy, garáže, obytné bloky i kanceláře. Vila Rosilio je jednou z jeho prvních realizací, ve které ukazuje svůj zájem o expresivní a dynamickou architekturu.

S ohledem na horké severoafrické klima a slunce se architekt snažil vytvořit transparentní architekturu, které v případě vily Rosilio docílil sestavou skleněných výplní v betonové mřížce po povrchu téměř celé fasády.

He is sometimes referred to as Moroccan Oscar Niemeyer. Jean-François Zevaco was the most active of the founding generation of Morocco's modernist architects. After studying in Paris, he settled down in Casablanca, where he designed luxury private residences, schools, garages, residential blocks and offices. Villa Rosilio is one of his first projects in which he showcases his interest in expressive and dynamic architecture. Given the hot North African climate and sun, the architect aimed to create transparent architecture, which, in the case of the Villa Rosilio, was achieved by a set of glass panels in a concrete grid over the surface of almost the entire façade.

Jeden z nejpůsobivějších interiérů skandinávského modernismu naleznete v ospalém městě Eslöv, nedaleko Malmö. Vytvořil ho v roce 1957 architekt Hans Asplund, syn slavnějšího Gunnara Asplunda, zakladatele švédského moderního klasicismu. Hans šel v otcových šlépějích a během padesátých let navrhl celou řadu veřejných budov. Jeho vrcholným dílem je bezesporu kulturní dům v Eslöv, který je koncipován jako otevřený veřejný prostor pro rozmanité sociální a kulturní aktivity. Dodnes je interiér zcela intaktní a ukazuje detailní práci svého tvůrce. Asplund navrhl pro budovu vše na míru, včetně unikátních skleněných svítidel, sezení, zábradlí a dalších prvků. Pracoval především s přírodními materiály.

One of the most impressive Scandinavian modernist interiors may be found in the sleepy city of Eslöv near Malmö. It was created in 1957 by architect Hans Asplund, son of the more famous Gunnar Asplund, founder of Swedish modern classicism. Hans followed his father's footsteps and designed a number of public buildings during the 1950s. His masterpiece is undoubtedly the Eslöv House of Culture, conceived as an open public space for a variety of social and cultural activities. To this day, the interior remains completely intact and showcases its creator's detailed work. Asplund has designed everything for the building, including unique glass lamps, seating, railings and more. He worked primarily with natural materials.

Jemný neoklasicismus a měkké formy poválečného modernismu se setkávají v interiéru radnice kodaňské čtvrti Frederiksberg. V roce 1942 vypracoval její návrh architekt Henning Hansen. Stavbu však nedokončil. Po jeho smrti dohlíželi na realizaci Carl H. Nimb a Helge Holm. Masivní budova skrývá obrovské vnitřní atrium, slavnostní sál, svatební sál a celou řadu dalších kancelářských a oficiálních prostor, všechny doplněné elegantními ozdobnými prvky dokonalého řemeslného provedení. Monumentální skleněné lustry a další svítidla byly navrženy samotným Hansenem ve spolupráci s designérem Carlem Fagerlundem, architektem švédské sklářské společnosti Orrefors, která je také ve své továrně vyrobila.

Fine neoclassicism and soft forms of postwar modernism meet in the interior of the Copenhagen-Frederiksberg City Hall. It was designed by architect Henning Hansen in 1942. Hansen has not completed the project's construction, though. Following his death, the project was supervised by Carl H. Nimb and Helge Holm. The massive building houses a huge inner atrium, a ceremonial hall, a wedding hall and a host of other office and official spaces, all complemented by elegant decorative elements of a perfect craftsmanship. Monumental glass chandeliers and other lighting fixtures were designed by Hansen himself in collaboration with designer Carl Fagerlund, the architect of the Swedish glass company Orrefors, which manufactured them in its factory.

Georges Adilon byl architektem i malířem v jedné osobě. Patřil k poválečné generaci francouzských abstraktních umělců používajících velké formáty a originální performativní malířské techniky. Na konci padesátých let začal v Lyonu a jeho okolí navrhovat domy pro své přátele. Jeho vlastní dům a ateliér v malé vesnici Brindas nedaleko Lyonu byl jeho vůbec prvním architektonickým projektem, ve kterém definoval svou sochařskou senzibilitu. Objekt se skládá z malého bílého krychlového objemu s organicky tvarovanými okny a sochařskými detaily, včetně barevně zasklených oválných oken koupelny. Dům také zahrnuje podzemní ateliér a mnoho kusů nábytku navržených samotným Adilonem.

Georges Adilon was both an architect and a painter in one. He belonged to the post-war generation of French abstract artists using large formats and original performative painting techniques. In the late 1950s he began designing houses for his friends in and around Lyon. His own home and studio in the small village of Brindas near Lyon was his very first architectural project in which he defined his sculptural sensitivity. The building consists of small white cubic volume with organically shaped windows and sculptural details, including colour-glazed oval windows in the bathroom. The house also includes an underground studio and many pieces of furniture designed by Adilon himself.

Obytná budova Clarté v Ženevě je jedním z vrcholných děl meziválečné éry architekta Le Corbusiera.

Ve své mašinistické architektuře odráží konstrukční prvky ikonického Maison de Verre v Paříži, který byl ve stejné době postaven Pierrem Chareauem a Bernardem Bijvoetem. Oběma projektům je společné použití skleněných cihel, které se v ženevském domě objevují především na obou schodištích, tvoří plochy jednotlivých schodů a vytvářejí transparentní prostor s dostatkem světla pronikajícího do útrob domu přes osm pater střešním světlíkem.

The Clarté Residential Building in Geneva is one of the highlights of architect Le Corbusier's interwar era. In its machinistic architecture, the object reflects the design elements of the iconic Maison de Verre in Paris, which was built at the same time by Pierre Chareau and Bernard Bijvoet. Both projects share the use of glass bricks, which are featured in the house in Geneva mainly on both staircases, form the surfaces of individual stairs and create a transparent space with plenty of light penetrating the interior of the house over eight floors through a skylight.

Julio Vilamajó byl jedním z nejdůležitějších uruguay­ ských architektů minulého století. Díky jeho kontaktům s Le Corbusierem a dalšími mezinárodními modernisty byl jedním z prvních, kteří v Uruguayi během dvacátých let uvedli moderní styl. I přesto se nevzdal lokální inspirace a jeho stavby představují unikátní syntézu mezinárodního modernismu, art deca a lokálních stavebních tradic i koloniálního stylu.

Dnes je jeho vlastní dům v Montevideu z roku 1930 otevřen veřejnosti. V jeho rekonstruovaných interiérech mohou návštěvníci vidět unikátní detaily, které demonstrují Vilamajův dekoratérský cit. Stropní svítidlo v hlavním obytném prostoru připomíná se svými barevnými skleněnými kuličkami precizně vyrobený šperk. Dekor propojený s funkcionalismem nemá ve své době obdoby.

Julio Vilamajó was one of Uruguay's most important architects of the last century. Thanks to his contacts with Le Corbusier and other international modernists, Vilamajó was one of the first to introduce modern style in Uruguay during the 1920s. Yet he has not given up on local inspiration and his buildings represent a unique synthesis of international modernism, Art Deco and local building traditions and colonial style. Nowadays his own 1930 house in Montevideo is open to the public. In its reconstructed interiors, visitors can see unique details that demonstrate Vilamajó's decorating feel. The ceiling light in the main living area with its colourful glass beads resembles a precisely made jewel. The décor linked to functionalism is unprecedented in its time.

Slavný francouzský malíř Fernand Léger často spolupracoval s architekty na realizaci umění ve veřejném prostoru. Jeho myšlenka syntézy umění v menším měřítku byla uvedena v život společně s architektem amerického původu Paulem Nelsonem v padesátých letech. Nelson, který je známý svým experimentálním návrhem zavěšeného domu a svými rozsáhlými projekty nemocnic, navrhl v roce 1954 ve Sceaux nedaleko Paříže rodinný dům s klenutou betonovou střechou a hrubými kamennými zdmi. Rytmická uliční fasáda je opatřena rozsáhlým oknem, členěným na malé čtverce, které Léger opatřil barevnými sklíčky, a vytvořil tak jemný polychromovaný efekt.

Renowned French painter Fernand Léger often collaborated with architects to realise art in public space. His idea of ​​a small-scale art synthesis was brought to life together with US-born architect Paul Nelson in the 1950s. Nelson, known for his experimental hanging house design and extensive hospital projects, designed a family home in 1954 in Sceaux, near Paris, with an arched concrete roof and rough stone walls. The rhythmic street façade is fitted with a large window, divided into small squares, which Léger filled with coloured slides, creating a subtle polychrome effect.

Restaurace a kabaret Cicada se nachází v ­historickém artdecovém mrakodrapu, který nese název po svém zakladateli Jamesi Oviattovi. V roce 1927 zde Oviatt postavil se svým kolegou obchodní dům Alexander & Oviatt, zaměřený na současnou módu.

Architekti Walker & Eisen spolupracovali na designu budovy s renomovanými francouzskými tvůrci. Dekorativnímu exteriéru i interiéru dominuje především vstupní část se skleněným podsvíceným stropem v diamantovém rastru od architekta Ferdinanda Chanuta. Hlavní hvězdou projektu byl však René Lalique, který osobně osadil některé části prostoru svými ručně vyráběnými skleněnými panely. Dodnes můžeme obdivovat jeho skleněné výtahové panely, vstupní dveře i monumentální lustry v hlavní části interiéru.

The Cicada Restaurant and Cabaret is located in the historic Art Deco skyscraper, named after its founder James Oviatt. In 1927, James Oviatt and his colleague built the Alexander & Oviatt department store, focusing on contemporary fashion. Architects Walker & Eisen collaborated with renowned French designers on the building's design. The decorative exterior and interior are mainly dominated by the entrance area with a glass backlit ceiling in a diamond grid by architect Ferdinand Chanut. However, the project's main star was René Lalique, who personally set some parts of the space with his handmade glass panels. We may still admire his glass lift panels, entrance doors and monumental chandeliers in the main part of the interior.

Modernistické divadlo na Via Manzoni v Miláně navrhl mezi lety 1946 až 1950 architekt Alziro Bergonzo, žák slavného Piera Portaluppiho. Jeho interiér představuje jedinečnou ukázku italské dekorativní moderny poválečné éry. Jednotlivé na míru navržené prvky odkazují k historii italského divadla i k antické eleganci. Nábytek, dekorativní povrchy a skleněná svítidla s výrazným broušeným povrchem vznikly v jednotném kreativním duchu a představují jedinečnou ukázku delikátního italského modernismu, stojícího někde mezi Portaluppim, Mollinem a Pontim.

The modernist theatre at Via Manzoni in Milan was designed by architect Alziro Bergonzo, a student of the famous Pier Portaluppi, between 1946 and 1950.

Its interior represents a unique example of Italian decorative modernity in the postwar era. Individual tailor-made elements refer to the history of Italian theatre, as well as antique elegance. The furniture, decorative surfaces and glass lamps with a distinct cut surface were created in a unified creative spirit and represent a unique example of delicate Italian modernism, somewhere between Portaluppi, Mollin and Ponti.

Vlastní dům britského architekta Briana Housdena působí v poklidné londýnské čtvrti Hampstead jako zjevení. Housden postavil během svého života jen několik málo rezidencí. Většinu svého času věnoval stavbě vlastního domu, který se pro něj stal celoživotním dílem, inspirovaným jeho hrdiny moderní architektury a designu. V padesátých letech měl štěstí se osobně setkat s Gerritem Rietveldem, představitelem radikálního holandského hnutí De Stijl. Jeho myšlenky pak britský architekt propojil s interpretací skleněného domu Pierra Chareaua v Paříži a vše v roce 1965 zabalil do brutalistní betonové skořápky.

Překvapivá architektonická kompozice protínajících se vertikálních i horizontálních objemů a linií je protkaná rozsáhlými plochami skleněných cihel kontrastujícími se surovým betonem.

British architect Brian Housden's own house is a re­velation in the quiet Hampstead district in London.

Housden built only a few residences during his life. He devoted most of his time to building his own house, which became a lifelong work for him, inspired by his heroes of modern architecture and design. In the 1950s, he was lucky to meet Gerrit Rietveld, a representative of the radical Dutch movement De Stijl. The British architect interconnected Rietveld's ideas with an interpretation of Pierre Chareau's glass house in Paris and wrapped everything up in a brutal concrete shell in 1965. The surprising architectural composition of intersecting vertical and horizontal volumes and lines is interwoven with large areas of glass bricks contrasting with raw concrete.

Ještě před svým návratem do Španělska získal katalánský architekt Antoni Bonet Castellana, který prožil dvě dekády svého života v Argentině, jednu ze svých nejdůležitějších zakázek. Jednalo se o výstavbu velkého rodinného domu pro rodinu Gomisů. Tzv. Casa Gomis nebo La Ricarda se pro autora stala obrovskou výzvou k vybudování velkorysé rezidence jako komplexního uměleckého díla. Tato jednopatrová vila byla svým architektem navržena do posledního detailu včetně zahradní architektury i drobných vestavěných detailů. Jedním z hlavních prvků celé architektury jsou kromě série valených kleneb také zdi sestavené z betonových dílců s barevnými skleněnými čočkami, které v interiéru vytváří barevnou hru světel a stínů.

Prior to his return to Spain, Catalan architect Antoni Bonet Castellana, who spent two decades of his life in Argentina, won one of his most important orders – for the construction of a large family house for the Gomis family. The so-called Casa Gomis or La Ricarda became a huge challenge for the author asked to build a generous residence as a complex work of art.

The single-storey villa was designed by its architect to the last detail, including garden architecture and small built-in details. In addition to a series of barrel vaults, one of the main elements of the entire architectural design is walls made of concrete panels with coloured glass lenses, which create a colourful play of lights and shadows in the interior.

Poslední mistrovské dílo gurua americké organické architektury Bruce Goffa, rezidence Al Struckus, je zároveň jedním z jeho několika málo kalifornských projektů. Dům byl navržen pro leteckého inženýra Ala Struckuse, který si našel příhodný pozemek ve Woodland Hills v Los Angeles. Vysoký válcový objem stavby je dynamizován trojicí futuristických oken, připomínajících průzory futuristické kosmické rakety i čistou krásu přírodního světa, který byl pro Goffa hlavním zdrojem inspirace. Vstupní masivní dveře na centrálním otočném pantu Goff dekoroval kruhovou abstraktní vitráží ve stylu typickém pro jeho vysoce individualizované rodinné domy, které stavěl především v americké Oklahomě.

Bruce Goff's last masterpiece of American organic architecture, Al Struckus, is also one of his few pro­ jects in California. The house was designed for aerospace engineer Al Struckus, who found a convenient piece of land in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. The building's high cylindrical volume is dynamized by three futuristic windows, reminiscent of the futuristic space rocket windows and the pure beauty of the natural world, which was the main source of inspiration for Goff. Goff decorated the massive entrance door on the central hinge with a circular abstract vitrage in a style typical of his highly individualised family houses, which he built primarily in Oklahoma.

Dům Sheats-Goldstein neboli Rezidence S-G představuje nejikoničtější dílo amerického architekta Johna Lautnera a jeden z domů, které nejvíce charakterizují hollywoodský sen. Původně vznikl pro Helen Taylor a Paula Henryho Sheatsovy. Jeho nakloněná betonová střecha, která je perforována skleněnými čočkami, volně přechází do exteriéru a zakrývá sousední bazén. V roce 1972 zakoupil nemovitost extravagantní podnikatel a milovník architektury James Goldstein, který nechal Lautnera dokončit a rozšířit jeho původní design bez jakéhokoliv finančního omezení. Pomyslným vrcholem celého domu je rohová Goldsteinova ložnice definovaná skleněnými stěnami, které se dají po stisknutí tlačítka jednoduše automaticky otevřít a zase zavřít. Obě skleněné desky se setkají přesně v rohu stavby a zapadají do sebe bez jakéhokoliv rámu.

The Sheats-Goldstein House, or S-G Residence, is the most iconic work of American architect John ­Lautner and one of the houses that characterise the Hollywood dream the most. The house was originally created for Helen Taylor and Paul Henry Sheats. Its inclined concrete roof, which is perforated with glass lenses, freely enters the exterior and covers the adjacent pool. In 1972, the property was bought by James Goldstein, an extravagant entrepreneur and architecture lover, who allowed Lautner to finish and expand his original design without any financial limits. The imaginary culmination of the whole house is the corner Goldstein bedroom, defined by glass walls, which can be opened and closed automatically by touching a button. Both glass plates meet exactly in the corner of the building and fit in each other without any frame.

Bernhard Hoetger byl sochař, malíř a architekt v jedné osobě, který se zařadil v meziválečných letech mezi přední německé expresionisty. V roce 1929 ho oslovil prosperující kavárník Ludwig Roselius, aby společně s etnografem Hermanem Wirthem realizovali etnografický institut Atlantis. Jeho cílem bylo podpořit Wirthovu myšlenku o tom, že bájná Atlantida se nachází na dně Severního moře a byla před mnoha lety obývána germánskými kmeny, a to ještě před tím, než se jejich učení rozšířilo do Mezopotámie a Egypta. I přes tuto bizarní filozofii je dům Atlantis fascinujícím dílem architektury a designu, ve kterém se všechny umělecké disciplíny prolínají. Jejich vrcholem je bezesporu tzv. Modrá síň, která se nachází v posledním patře. Její zaklenutý strop je prosklen modrými a bezbarvými skleněnými cihlami, které jsou poskládány do abstraktní dekorativní mozaiky.

Bernhard Hoetger was a sculptor, painter and architect in one who ranked among the leading German expressionists in the interwar years. In 1929, he was approached by the prosperous coffee maker L ­ udwig Roselius to implement the Atlantis Ethnographic Institute together with ethnographer Herman Wirth.

His aim was to support Wirth's idea that the mythical Atlantis was at the bottom of the North Sea and was inhabited by Germanic tribes many years ago, even before their teachings spread to Mesopotamia and Egypt. Despite this bizarre philosophy, the Atlantis House is a fascinating work of architecture and design, in which all artistic disciplines blend together.

Their peak is undoubtedly the Blue Hall, located on the top floor. Its vaulted ceiling is glazed with blue and colourless glass bricks, which are stacked in an abstract decorative mosaic.

Luigi Moretti je kontroverzní a zároveň velmi důležitou postavou italské architektury. Před válkou spolupracoval s fašistickým režimem a postavil několik vynikajících racionalistických staveb. Po válce se mu však podařilo osvobodit se od kontroverzní minulosti a stal se jedním z nejaktivnějších římských architektů. V roce 1949 navrhl kultovní obytnou budovu Il Girasole (Slunečnice), která je považována za jeden z prvních příkladů postmodernismu. Její dramaticky koncipovaná fasáda je rozdělena na dvě části, mezi nimiž je postaveno schodiště. Moretti jej vybavil transparentním skleněným zábradlím, jehož konce jsou organicky rozvlněné v elegantní křivce vytvářející poetický prvek.

Luigi Moretti is a controversial and simultaneously very important figure in Italian architecture. Before the war he worked with the Fascist regime and built several excellent rationalist buildings. After the war, however, he managed to free himself from the controversial past and became one of the most active Roman architects. In 1949 he designed the iconic Il Girasole (Sunflower) residential building, regarded as one of the first examples of postmodernism. Its dramatically conceived facade is divided into two parts with a staircase between them. Moretti fitted it with a transparent glass railing, the ends of which are organically ripped in an elegant curve creating a poetic element.

V roce 1934 oslovil syn slavného belgického průmyslníka Eduarda Empaina Louis švýcarského architekta Michela Polaka, aby pro něj v Bruselu vybudoval luxusní rezidenci. Výsledkem byla Villa Empain, jeden z nejoriginálnějších domů z období art deca v Evropě.

Polak byl inspirován francouzským stylem třicátých let a vytvořil své největší mistrovské dílo s luxusními geometrickými interiérovými dekoracemi a mramorovými texturami. Strop v jídelně je dílem francouzského designéra a výtvarníka Maxe Ingranda, který na několika panelech vytvořil leptané a malované výjevy hvězdné oblohy. Od roku 2010 patří vila Boghossianově nadaci a je přístupná veřejnosti jako umělecká galerie.

In 1934, the son of the famous Belgian industrialist Eduard Empain Louis contacted Swiss architect Michel Polak and asked him to build a luxury residence for him in Brussels. The result was the Empain Villa, one of the most original Art Deco houses in Europe. Inspired by the French style of the 1930s, Polak created his greatest masterpiece with luxurious geometric interior decorations and marble textures. The ceiling in the dining room is the work of French designer and artist Max Ingrand, who created etched and painted scenes of the starry sky on several panels. Since 2010 the villa has been owned by the ­Boghossian Foundation and is open to the public as an art gallery.
