Setting a New Course for Local Journalism
At LAist, everything we do is driven by our public service mission: to bring original, distinctive local reporting and programming to as many people across our region as possible. It has been my honor to lead that mission as president and chief executive of Southern California Public Radio for the past four-anda-half years.
I look ahead to my retirement next year with gratitude for the opportunity to work with talented individuals who bring a commitment and vision that is unlike any I’ve seen in my long career in media. They are making LAist a vital source of local news and a model for public media’s future.
At LAist, we are leading the way by listening to the needs of our audiences and cultivating them where they increasingly are: in the online, always-on world. Here are a few of the steps we’re taking to deepen our relationship with digital readers and listeners and turn them into loyal LAist members.
While radio remains a key platform for us, we’re realigning our staff and adding reporters to extend our online and broadcast coverage on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. We’re building users’ daily news-reading habit with innovations like The Brief and the How To LA newsletter. We’re upping the frequency of popular on-demand shows like The LA Report and How To LA. We’re taking down walls between onair, online, and on-demand content so that readers and listeners can more easily access the excellent journalism we offer across all our platforms.
We’re also fundamentally rethinking how we choose and craft stories. Our new lens on the news is shaped by what Angelenos have told us they need: Stories that help them navigate our complex city; discover new places, connect with neighbors and civic institutions, and effect change in their communities.
Our pride in being a news organization of L.A. and for L.A. drove another sweeping change this year: Uniting our radio and digital operations under one name, LAist. Our rebranding leaves no doubt about who we are, who we serve, and why we tell L.A. stories to the world.
In January we will go public with our Democracy Needs To Be Heard campaign, a critical fundraising effort to ensure we are able to give people the fair, fact-based news and information they need to improve life across our region and keep democracy strong. On behalf of everyone at LAist, thank you for so generously supporting our work as we drive toward becoming Southern California’s indispensable source of local news.
Herb Scannell President and CEOFiscal Year 2023 Highlights
Erin Stone Climate Emergency ReporterLAist is setting a new course for local journalism. We’re challenging traditional notions of what is and isn’t news, deepening our relationship with our audiences, and reaching them whenever and however they want -- on radio, online, and on-demand. As local news organizations contract or disappear and disinformation and misinformation abound, we’re building our future on innovation while upholding journalism’s foundational principles of fairness, accuracy, and commitment to public interest.
We’re Redefining News
Traditionally, news organizations were gatekeepers that decided what the public should know. LAist is leading the charge in public media to change that. We’re taking engaged journalism to a new level by seeking to understand the information needs and habits of the people we’re trying to serve and put those concerns at the center of our decisions about the stories we tell.
To find out what Angelenos need we asked two dozen residents of different races, ethnicities, incomes, and zip codes how they use local news and information and what would help them in their daily lives. We took the most resonant themes from those conversations to create a new framework for LAist content. It consists of four key ideas, or modes:
Discover. Our stories that promote discovery satisfy curiosity about Los Angeles – its history, neighborhoods, and rich diversity of people. For example, introducing Angelenos to new experiences and places powers the popular Cheap Fast Eats guide and stories like Science Reporter Jacob Margolis’ report on Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s first open house in four years, which drew 36,000 people.
Connect. People yearn for meaningful interactions to lessen the social isolation of living in a sprawling metropolis. A splendid example is the Queer LA project, which has built a devoted audience by telling the stories of of L.A.’s LGBTQ+ communities and helping their members engage with others who reflect and validate their experiences.
Navigate. Angelenos need help making sense of the complexities of life in L.A. Two great examples are our massively popular election guide, Voter Game Plan, which helps voters make informed ballot choices, and To Live And Rent In LA, a collection of stories that helps tenants understand crucial matters like eviction rules, rent hike limits, and federal rent subsidies.
Change. Many Angelenos want to contribute to positive changes in their communities but don’t know how to get started. Change stories spotlight solutions, such as Pacoima’s success cooling down hot playgrounds with special asphalt paint and a substitute teacher’s successful effort to revive the music program at L.A.’s Dorsey High School.
Much of our coverage is built on more than one mode. How To LA , the five-day-a-week podcast hosted by Brian De Los Santos, embraces all the modes. The show has helped listeners discover unfamiliar pockets of the city like Angelino Heights, connected them to literary spaces led by Black women, explored how to navigate L.A. without a car, and examined grassroots efforts to address issues like fentanyl addiction. The modes offer a way to serve everyone’s information needs, regardless of race, class, ethnicity or other demographic traits. “It’s saying we’re going to reach Angelenos who want to figure out how to make L.A. work for them,” said LAist Vice President of Community Engagement and Strategic Initiatives Ashley Alvarado
Building the Audience of the Future
Our transformation is most evident in our evolution from KPCC to LAist. Research told us that many Angelenos didn’t know our legacy radio operation, KPCC 89.3, and our newer brands, the LAist.com website and podcasting arm LAist Studios, all belong to the same organization, Southern California Public Radio. As LAist, we’re proclaiming in no uncertain terms that we serve people who love and identify with L.A. – the place and state of mind – and that we tell L.A. stories to the world. Our new name conveys to supporters that their dollars will help all our platforms thrive.
The rebranding reflects a deeper change: We’re knocking down walls across our newsroom to make our content easily accessible, whether audiences come for LAist 89.3 radio broadcasts, LAist.com stories and information or LAist Studios podcasts and other on-demand programs. While radio remains a key platform, we understand what’s vital to a more sustainable future is digital, cross-platform content available whenever audiences want it. That’s why we’re realigning and adding staff to expand our online and broadcast coverage on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. We’re turning more of the compelling conversations on shows like AirTalk With Larry Mantle into stories for LAist.com readers. We’re refocusing the work of LAist Studios to make award-winning podcasts like Imperfect Paradise part of our daily broadcast and online reports. Our mantra is “Anytime, anywhere” because that’s what audiences increasingly expect in an on-demand, online world.
Still Great Journalism and Storytelling
What’s not changing is our commitment to delivering local news that matters. Our newsroom mobilized for timely, insightful reports on California’s extreme winter, including explanations of why cold weather feels colder in L.A. (one of the 10 mostread stories of the year on LAist.com) and the science behind the atmospheric rivers that caused monster storms. We addressed urgent issues for parents and parents-to-be in the education team’s seven-part series on dyslexia and guides to family leave and postpartum health. We provided context for understanding the special place Monterey Park holds in the hearts of immigrant and American-born Chinese after a gunman killed 11 people at one of the city’s ballrooms. We examined the origins, evolution, and enduring appeal of the iconic Barbie doll in The Barbie Tapes, a three-episode podcast hosted by Antonia Cereijido and M.G. Lord
Our in-depth investigations have impact. Immigrant Communities Correspondent Leslie Berestein Rojas’ examination of silicosis, an ancient lung disease affecting a large cluster of mostly Latino countertop cutters in L.A., brought actions by the county Board of Supervisors and California regulators as well as an L.A. Press Club Award. The election of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass spurred a survey that elicited more than 4,300 responses from Angelenos, the majority of whom urged Bass to put homelessness at the top of her agenda. Then we created Promise Tracker, a tool for monitoring Bass’ progress towards her pledge to house 17,000 unhoused residents during her inaugural year in office. Holding power to account also shaped The Sheriff podcast, Civics and Democracy Correspondent Frank Stoltze’s five-episode deep dive into Alex Villanueva’s troubling four years as L.A. County’s top law enforcer.
These efforts reflect LAist’s commitment to helping Southern Californians understand the forces shaping their communities and take part in democracy. Your generosity enables us to reach more readers and listeners and turn them into loyal LAist members as we strive to become an indispensable source for distinctive, fact-based local news and information.
SCPR’s reporters produce original and distinctive coverage from, L.A. street vendors, atmospheric rivers, pregnancy guides and much more.
