Elevating Voices Equipping Los Angeles

When I came to Los Angeles almost four years ago, I wrote these words on the back of an envelope: Democracy Needs to Be Heard. Your generous support of Southern California Public Radio during the past fiscal year (July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022) is helping KPCC/ LAist build a more sustainable future for the robust local journalism that elevates the voices of the people in our diverse region and equips them to be active participants in civic life.

Here are a few of the key strategies that are guiding us to that future.

We’re accelerating our movement into a multiplatform digital world, where online news consumers and podcast devotees are as welcome as traditional radio lovers. We’re a national leader in engagement journalism, shaping our distinctive reporting and storytelling with input from curious and caring readers and listeners. We’re lifting up the voices of people from across our diverse region in daily coverage as well as in special projects like our 2022 Voter Game Plan, a prime example of our commitment to providing the independent, factbased coverage that fuels civic life at the grassroots level.

We’re also making significant progress toward our goals of diversifying SCPR’s workforce and the voices we feature in our journalism. We can’t capture the essence of Los Angeles if we don’t reflect it ourselves. Whether on-air, online or on-demand, explaining L.A., championing L.A.’s diverse voices, and telling L.A. stories to the world is what we are all about.

Enclosed is a report that details the impact of your giving during the past year. From all of us at SCPR, thank you for your investment in our journalism. Thank you for the trust you’ve placed in our efforts to help Southern Californians better understand themselves and each other as we navigate these challenging times together.

2022 SCPR Annual Report 1

Fiscal Year 2022 Highlights

Albert Einstein once said the world cannot be changed without changing the way we think. At SCPR we’ve been changing the way we think – about our journalism and storytelling, the communities we serve, and how to grow and diversify our audience for a more sustainable future. That’s why our most substantive newsroom-wide effort this past year has focused on deepening our engagement with KPCC/ LAist readers and listeners.

Through the “Ask a Question” link that accompanies LAist.com stories, we are inviting our audiences into the reporting process, learning what they need to know to navigate the complexities of daily life in our imperfect paradise. “Engaged journalism,” SCPR Chief Content Officer Kristen Muller wrote recently, “is about removing barriers for participation and creating a welcoming space so that more people can have access to the information they need to be their own best advocates.”

THE DECLINE OF LOCAL NEWS OUTLETS OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES HAS COINCIDED WITH A RISE IN DISINFORMATION.

Our intensified focus on the news and information needs of our audiences drove a major shift in our approach to political coverage. We have renamed the politics beat Civics and Democracy to signal what’s ultimately at stake in the crucial enterprise of local news. The decline of local news outlets over the past two decades has coincided with a rise in disinformation, misinformation and government corruption. Our pivot to Civics and Democracy, which we announced on the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, elevates the voices of voters over polls, rallies and candidates’ sound bites. “As we face perhaps the greatest threat to democracy since the Civil War,” Civics and Democracy Correspondent Frank Stoltze said, “I seek to engage with communities and examine the hurdles to becoming involved in the political process.” While we may not cover as many City Hall press conferences, we will continue to hold the powerful to account, as Frank does in The Sheriff, a compelling podcast from LAist Studios that traces Sheriff Alex Villanueva’s perplexing trajectory from progressive candidate to vindictive leader who mocks the reforms he once touted.

Our reframing of the politics beat is evident in the 2022 Voter Game Plan, our most comprehensive and useful local election guide yet. SCPR’s newsroom “made a conscious decision to focus our political coverage less on politicians and more on voters,” explained Civics and Democracy Engagement Producer Brianna Lee. Reader questions helped shape the Voter Game Plan, which hundreds of thousands of Angelenos used to make decisions on the June

2 2022 SCPR Annual Report

primary ballot. It doubled the traffic on LAist.com, in part because voters made return visits to bone up on candidates and issues. The most popular guides concerned the L.A. Superior Court and L.A. County assessor races, not often covered by other news outlets. We published an updated edition of the Voter Game Plan ahead of the November general election.

The voices of a wide range of Angelenos also were prominent in the development of The Adult’s Guide to Going to College in California, produced by KPCC/LAist’s College Pathways team. To ensure the relevance of the information, we solicited questions from readers, who included career changers, people returning to school after a long hiatus, recent immigrants, parents of young children and people with disabilities. We translated the guide into English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese and simplified Chinese and made it available online at LAist.com as well as in print. In all, nearly 25,000 free copies were distributed with help from the Los Angeles County library system.

Building the public media audience of the future means expanding our footprint in the digital world. One of our latest forays into that space is How to L.A., a new offering that aims to help Angelenos navigate, discover, connect and affect change. Designed first and foremost as a podcast from LAist Studios, it will soon reach our broadcast audience through a berth on NPR’s Morning Edition on KPCC. It’s also tied to a newsletter and stories on LAist.com that highlight host Brian De Los Santos’ reporting on topics like the future Crenshaw-LAX Metro K line and the new Chinatown farmer’s market. How to L.A. is a great example of SCPR’s multiplatform strategy for attracting new audience members, especially younger digital natives, and achieving our goal of making at least 75% of all marquee content available on-air, online and on-demand.

Above: Our college guides provide valuable information and hard-to-find tips for students of all ages and circumstances.

TOP 10%

LAIST STUDIOS’ WORLD-CLASS PODCASTS RANKED IN THE TOP 10% IN AN EXTREMELY CROWDED PODCAST MARKET OF MORE THAN 4 MILLION SHOWS.

LAist Studios has made great strides in creating podcasts that expand our connection to traditional radio fans while drawing a new generation of listeners who like adventurous and personal storytelling. The robust 2021-22 lineup featured The Academy Museum Podcast, Snooze, WILD, Human/Nature, and two seasons of our longform narrative series Imperfect Paradise, The Forgotten Revolutionary and Home Is Life. We also created COVID in L.A., which showcased AirTalk host Larry Mantle’s interviews with COVID experts on subjects like quarantine requirements and boosters for kids, and Off-Ramp, which reprises some of host John Rabe’s most popular stories about L.A. people, places and ideas in an on-demand format. The LA Report, a twice-daily roundup of top local news, remains our highestperforming podcast. With more than 6.3 million downloads, LAist Studios’ world-class programs rank in the top 10% of an extremely crowded podcast market made up of more than 4 million shows.

Another important advance in our digital transformation is taking place now: We’re building a fully self-service membership management tool for signing up, donating and renewing membership online. It’s part of a broader plan that will include perks such as bonus interviews and other content available only to digital subscribers. These changes will add value for existing members as well as attract new members and keep them engaged in our programming and support.

4 2022 SCPR Annual Report

The heart of SCPR’s operations remains 89.3 KPCC, Southern California’s most listened-to public radio news station. Listeners tune in for the latest on urgent topics like abortion access, wildfires, gas prices and monkeypox. They rely on KPCC for information they won’t find anywhere else, such as Early Childhood Reporter Mariana Dale’s guide to finding a doula and her latest updates on vaccinations for very young children as well as Climate Emergency Reporter Erin Stone’s tips on complying with California’s new composting law. Our investigative journalism cast a spotlight on injustice, such as in Emily Elena Dugdale’s collaboration with ProPublica that exposed the racial profiling of Black teenagers in the Antelope Valley and in Elly Yu and Aaron Mendelson’s hard-hitting examination of the abuse and neglect of incarcerated people in the state’s medical parole program.

Advancing diversity, equity and inclusion remains a central part of SCPR’s agenda. To better reflect the makeup of our region, we are striving to include more Latinx sources in our stories and are making progress toward our goal of 50% Latinx representation. “We want people to feel more included in our coverage and see themselves reflected in ways that relate to their life,” Executive Editor Megan Garvey said.

This year we also published our first annual staff demographics survey, which found that 53% of SCPR employees identify with a race or ethnicity other than white alone, including 28% who identify as Latinx/Hispanic. Our diversity has increased with recent hiring, but the figures show there is more work to be done.

We’re committed to furthering diversity, equity and inclusion in our workplace and our journalism because doing so strengthens our coverage of and connection to the communities we aim to serve. This is crucial not only to SCPR’s success but also to our civic mission. In an era fraught with threats to our democracy we’ve mapped a road toward continued growth and excellence that gives us hope for the future.

SCPR’s reporters produce original and distinctive coverage from vaccinations for our youngest, how-to tips on the new California composting law and much more.
