The First Adaptive Reuse of Industrial Heritage in Taiwan The Pingtung (Heito) Sugar Factory is located southeast of Pingtung city. An 860,000m2 area isolated in the middle of the city, public entry has been forbidden since 1909 until now —causing a huge city development problem. With the buildings destroyed and abandoned for several decades, the sugar factory inside is a mystery to the public.

Site Location Design Site is located on both sides of Snake Creek and is 700 meters from the train station. The 860,000m2 are ideal for urban development for the north population center and south industrial area.

The Taiwan sugar company donated 160,000m2 for public use.

⼗六世紀⼤航海時代時蔗糖為⾼利潤，⼗七世紀荷蘭東印度公司 1630年代因地理位置與氣候在台灣發展糖業。 ⽇本效仿歐美將糖業⼯業化，在台灣建立50多個糖廠，1909年臺灣製糖株式會社阿緱製糖所落成開⼯。糖業活絡了阿 猴/屏東市，從基礎建設到產業發展皆有全盤規劃，為屏東晉⾝為現代化城市墊基。 然⽽過往的規劃造成現今城市的限制，以都市規劃成⾯在此基地形成了重要位置。

1939_1945 / USN bombing raid During World War II, cane sugar was an important cash crop and strategic goods. Sugar had medical purposes, and byproduct alcohol could be used as fuel. Heito Sugar Factory and Heito Airport became the main targets for the Allied attacks.

1977_1994 / Industrial pollution

Because the sugarcane refinery created a large amount of bagasse, a factory was built to transform the waste into paper. The paper factory officially began operations in 1977. When it closed in 1994, the factory had 600 employees and 24-hour operations.

1994_2018 / Abandon and Forgotten In 1994, the paper factory was closed, resulting from the rising protests of environmental pollution. Public entry was forbidden since 1909, and most buildings and buried, so the park remained a mystery to the public for almost a century.

2018_2021 / History uncovered.

It was unknown during the first phase of construction what would be revealed when site excavation started.

The process quickly uncovered existing structures and a new directive to reuse the old structures in the new design.

Waterfront Restoration Originally, Snake Creek had a natural environment.

However, it was engineered into a concrete ditch for industrial wastewater disposal.

Improvements needed to open the waterfront for public activities included water purification systems, grading where seasonal flood occurs, and wetlands for natural restoration.

HEITO 2021/ Factory wasteland as urban park Before uncovering the buried structures, the design was going to be a typical urban waterfront park. The adaptive reuse of structures conserves resources and celebrates its history. The redesign incorporates the existing texture and reuses old structures into a new pavilion.

Structures of the past The design endeavored to recover and identify each remaining structure.

Each building served a specific function in the park, providing a vital look into Heito development history. It tells the story of building the infrastructure and the impact on the city.

The old structures served as a foundation for all pavilions and created a geometric landscape.

Exhibition of past glory The model sculpture made from weathering steel recreates the Taiwan sugar factory. The chimneys are a significant memory for the people of Pingtung, serving as a landmark upon arrival to the city. The structures are a cultural reminder of the powerful accomplishments of its ancestors.

Rebuilding the past also creates collective emotions for past glory.

People can learn and remember about the city from the exhibition installed on the courtyard walls.

Underground Factory The only historical remains surviving are the underground structures. Damage to the remaining wall is feared of future excavation work. “Point Cloud” was used to map and measure inside the cave and render the space and structure behavior.

Uncovered underground factories are a safety risk to the public with over 6m depth from top to ground. A passage of gentle slopes for visitors to walk is created by removing the infill between two structures and creating an inviting courtyard in the center.

Underground Structures are not the same depth. A few sections need a retaining wall for structural reinforcement. The inner courtyard's foundation is designed as a raft base to store stormwater and pump drainage system to prevent future flooding in the area.

The past, present, and future Weathering steel structure is the material identified for new implants.

There are four connection components and one model in the center—the connections function as a transition for time and space and a medium for a separate structure.

Waste Water basin The area had nine water basins of various sizes. Due to site limitations, only six could be preserved. Only the foundations of basins are intact—all structures above the ground are gone. The basins' diameter has three sizes: large 39m, medium 20.5m, and small 6m.

Adventure & Playground The first two circles are smallest of the five but with a deeper slope creating a potential for climbing and exploration.

Rather than a carefully plotted children’s playground, the existing structure provided a spontaneous and inspiring experience.

The slope was extended with an existing structure as a starting point to create a pavilion that can be climbed or used for shade. The structure and materials reference old machinery, a very strong and clearly defined steel structure.

Recreating a functional basin would waste water and be unsafe for visitors.

Instead, we created a deck surrounded with stainless steel to keep water 15cm high. The pathway connects toward the center. A slope upward connects to the surface, creating an illusion of walking on water.

The past, present, and future Research and discovery of the existing structures provided a starting point for the design. Rather than being obsessed with iconic buildings, we modified the existing structures into different functions and created a deductive design process that resulted in new possibilities and successful outcomes.

圖書館 位於動線往北校區轉⾓處建築，為⼤ ⾨入⼝端點建築，其巨⼤量體阻隔了 背景⼭勢。

地景強度：天際線、⽣態群、微氣候、⼈⽂ 運動場

入⼝⼤樓/郵局

位於校園南校區正中央，南校區唯⼀⼤ 型開放活動空間，單⼀使⽤⽬的為運動 場。

位置屬於校園入⼝指標建築，建築設計無對 外服務空間，少服務性及活動性設施。

既有餐廳空間：為北校區與南校區交接路 段建築物，並也位於北校區地形抬升與南 校區平地邊緣建築。此建築位於交通及地 形變化的核⼼處，使⽤不像是與學⽣宿舍 區作為聯結。

歷史⽔圳 ⾏經校園內的⽔圳，為歷史空間但現為校 園陰暗處，並⼤部分為加蓋地下管溝處 理，無加蓋為⽔泥護岸。

校園入⼝為非主動線上，位置被周遭 鄰房阻隔，入⼝主要道路為校園內主 要⾞⾏及⼈⾏動線。

步⾏⽣活軸 在校園中創造許多有機的 ⽣活空間，是具有⽣活感 屬於⾏⼈的⼩尺度。

椰林⼤道 沿⽤校園既有的兩排椰林， 搭配街道的尺度與空間重 塑，消解原有校⾨⼝步⾏時 ⼈⾞衝突的緊張感。

翻轉校園軸線

將主要⾞⾏動線移⾄外環，並配合設置 地下停⾞出入⼝，原有校園中的林蔭⼤ 道便可還於⾏⼈。

校園新⽣活圈 原有的校⾨是迎賓並較具紀念性的氛 圍，規劃將⾞⾏移⾄外環後，⼤⾨開始 成為較為輕鬆、近⼈的⽣活廣場。

汽機⾞等待區 通往宿舍區

臨⾺路的部分為防⽌汽機⾞臨停亂象， 設計等待區，⽅便⾞⾏過渡到步⾏的校 園空間。

⽔圳⽣態廣場 Parking Entrance

利⽤既有⽔圳發展校園⽔環境⽣活空 間，讓原有陰暗的負空間成為友善校園 ⽣活的廣場。

劇場展演 新建⼤樓在外部開放空間上留有與周邊 環境對話的空間，相對於地⾯層與綠融 合在⼀起的空間，這是⼀個介於建築到 ⾃然之間的中介空間。

⾞⾏入⼝ 在城市進入到校園的介⾯上期望以⼤片 的綠來塑造空間氛圍，不同於市街的街 道，校園中的⾞⾏空間也是被包覆在⼀ 片綠林中。

不同⾼層的連通道空間 建議未來此區建築設置與 北校區聯通的路徑，建立 不同⾼層的⾏⼈路徑⽅ 式。

配合基地本⾝的地勢，創造多⾯向不同 ⾼程的通道與視覺⽅向。

1F有機量體 地⾯層存在許多既有的植栽與圳道，建 築以最低度⼲擾的姿態介入，保留其既 有豐富的⽣態樣貌。

The elongated structure is enclosed on three sides by a completely closed brick facade. The volume, closed to the east, south and west and open to the north, is the basis for an energy-optimized office building.

The inspiration for the brick facade is the alabaster fold of the Beethoven statue by Max Klinger, which is located in the Leipzig Bilder Museum. Max Klinger created a paradoxical perception here. The viewer sees a seemingly fluent light scarf over the knees of Beethoven and recognizes at the same time that it consists of solid stone t's an rare opportunity to create a side of building without window, in the first attempt we do try to use the double wall system to created window using the gap that create by rotating the bricks, but because budget and structure reason. so the final solution are creating 7 type of brick, each looks like it got rotated for an angle, so without compromise the structure system for a 3 stories building.

Bauhaus Museum Dessau - Critical Arch 355402 The Bauhaus Museum Dessau is located in the city park of DessauRosslau. Our proposal takes the urban block form and redefines the north-east corner of the city park to respect the scale of the historic city. The undulated massing of the museum bends towards the park to become part of the given whole. The continuous roof scape hovers over the city park to enclose and disclose the museum. A museum in and as the city park.

How does one exhibit a school that has heralded incredible innovation? In our search for an architecture of exhibition carrying the spirit of a workshop for innovation we arrived at the fusion of two typologies: workshop and gallery. The arched top-lit museum space, as found in the archetypal Louvre museum, is split into two roof sections. The half arched roof is then mirrored to form an independent structure to be repeated over the whole site providing shelter for all diverse functions. The arched roofs are proportionally scaled to meet all functions.

The roof scape is wrapped by expanding metal sheets, allowing discrete effective light transmission. This translucent envelope diffuses daylight and lights up all interior activity with serenity.

The internal passages are organized as a void pinwheel with an atrium in the center of the museum directing visitors to all public functions.

These interior streets with their axial views reconnect the visitors with the outside, extending the exhibition space towards the open urban context / park.

The museum is split into three platforms that gradually elevate towards the southern part of the site to gradually detach the museum from street traffic and gain serenity. The utility and building service are placed under the elevated platform.
