Lancaster is a vibrant and growing community where residents enjoy the quaintness of friendly neighborhoods that are only a few minutes from world-class entertainment and activities in Downtown Dallas. The City provides great job opportunities, an award-winning school district, as well as top quality award-winning parks and recreational facilities.

In December 2017, the City of Lancaster launched a formal search for the next Fire Chief and received over 41 applicants from 15 states. City Manager Opal Mauldin-Jones implemented a rigorous internal review process which included the current Interim Fire Chief, Police Chief, a representative from the Fire Fighters Association, Human Resources, a retired Fire Chief and an active Fire Chief from an outside community. During the process, the City Manager utilized a panel, questionnaires, interviews, detailed reference and background reviews before narrowing down the applicants and naming Mr. Kenneth L. Johnson as Chief.

Mr. Johnson has over thirty two years of experience in the fire service and served as the Assistant Chief of Operations for Missouri City Fire and Rescue in Missouri City, Texas. Before serving in Missouri City, he dedicated thirty-one years to the city of Dallas promoting through the ranks to the executive appointed position of Deputy Chief.

The Lancaster Civic Leadership Academy is an 8 week program that allows city residents, school district employees, Lancaster business owners and city employees to learn more about the functions of city departments and services.

The Academy is open to all city residents, school district employees, Lancaster business owners and city employees 18 years of age or older.

The Academy is FREE of cost to you!

Participants in the academy must attend 7 of the 9 sessions to receive a certificate and official Civic Leadership Academy polo style shirt. We recognize that our participants may experience conflicts over the course of the Academy Program. However, the city staff works very hard to make sure that participants get a comprehensive picture of the city operations. If more than two sessions are missed, this picture is not complete.

While our citizens use city services every day, rarely do they see what happens “behind the scenes� or have access to information regarding why and how things happen. The Academy is a great way to find out more about how the City of Lancaster is working for you!

Additionally, citizens who are considering or who may consider applying for an appointment to one of our many Boards and Commissions will gain insight into our departments and functions. The Academy offers Lancaster residents an in-depth look into City operations and services.

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is committed to protecting the health and welfare of the communities we serve from mosquitoes and vector-borne disease. Residents experiencing a mosquito problem may call 214-819-2115 to set up a free service request.

Health officials urge the public to take protective measures by utilizing the ‘4D’s’ to reduce the risk of West Nile virus: DEET All Day, Every Day: Whenever you’re outside, use insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

DRESS: Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing outside.

DRAIN: Remove all areas of standing water in and around your home.

DUSK & DAWN: Limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active.

Emergency Preparedness Wireless Emergency Alerts

Are you prepared for an emergency?

Cellular telephone providers and the FCC are cooperating to send wireless emergency alerts (WEA) to your cell phone when warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS).

Emergency Notifications & Outdoor Warning Sirens

You may get a message on your mobile device screen alerting you to hazardous weather. There may be an audio alert as well. When you receive one of these weather alerts pay attention. Check local TV or radio stations or a good weather app for more information at the time of the event.

Keeping Citizens informed.

Emergency alerts sent to mobile devices can include tornadoes, extreme wind, flash floods and dust storms.

What is CodeRed?

CodeRed is an emergency preparedness and notification platform where you can learn about what to do when an emergency situation occurs and sign up for local alerts.

What can CodeRed do for me?

CodeRed allows local officials to connect directly to you via text message, email and voice calls to alert you of hazards in your area like: • • • • • •

These alerts are sent via cell towers within or touching the severe weather polygon as defined by the National Emergency Services (NES). They may not be exactly accurate but will increase awareness when severe weather is near, and provide severe weather warnings to those carrying cell phones with better focus than ever before.

Siren Activation for Emergencies and Outdoor Siren Test The Outdoor Warning Siren System is tested on the first Wednesday of every month in

the early afternoon at approximately 2:00 p.m. depending on inclement weather.

The City’s Outdoor Warning Siren System may be activated for any kind of emergency - not just severe weather. People often have the misconception that the sirens are meant to be heard indoors.

However, the siren system is intended to be heard outdoors. You may not hear it inside or in noisy areas.

When you hear the Outdoor Warning Siren System, you should immediately go inside and tune to local news or radio for additional information so you can make a decision on what actions you should take.

The Outdoor Warning Siren System consists of 20 strategically placed sirens that are activated for one or more of the following conditions: • A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service to affect the City of Lancaster.

• Trained storm spotters have reported a tornado that is in or has the potential to affect the community.

• Destructive winds in excess of 70 mph • Reports of hail larger than 1.25 inches in diameter or larger.

• Other emergencies as directed by appropriate officials.

Before an emergency happens, sit down together and decide how you wil get in contact with each other, where you will go and what you will do in an emergency. Simple Recycling Each year, over 21 billion pounds of clothing go into U.S. landfills - in an effort to combat this growing problem, the City of Lancaster has partnered with Simple Recycling to offer curb-side pick-up of clothing, shoes and small household items.

Simple Recycling is a for-profit recycler committed to offering residents the easiest way to keep usable materials from the landfill. The program is free of charge and simple to use.

Simple Step 1: Place clothing, shoes and home goods into the orange bags provided by Simple Recycling.

Simple Step 2: Place your bags at the curb on your

regular collection day by 7:30 a.m. Simple Recycling materials should be placed beside residents recycling container. DO NOT PLACE SIMPLE RECYCLING BAGS INSIDE OR ON TOP OF TRASH OR RECYCLING CONTAINERS.

Simple Step 3: A Simple Recycling truck will collect the

bags and recycle the items for reuse. Additionally, Simple Recycling will leave behind additional replacement bags for future use upon collection.

Please note, only items placed inside the bags will be collected.

Simple Recycling will not pick up anything left outside of the bag.

The following items will be accepted at the curb by Simple Recycling: • Men, women and children’s clothing • Coats and Jackets • Jewelry • Shoes • Purses • Hats • Toys • Pictures • Mirrors • Blankets • Drapes/Curtains • Pillows • Sleeping Bags • Small Furniture

All of the materials collected are graded and sorted locally based on quality and condition.

Mandatory Microchip

The Lancaster City Council recently approved a citywide mandatory microchipping ordinance requiring all cats and dogs, 4 months and older, to be microchipped. The ordinance aims to reduce the number of loose dogs within the city limits.

The City of Lancaster Code Compliance Division is seeking volunteers to join the Lancaster Eyes and Ears Program (LEEP).

The new ordinance also reduces the existing microchip fee of $25.00 to $15.00 per animal.

Microchip services are provided on a first come first served basis at the Lancaster Animal Shelter, located at 690 E. Main Street, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lancaster Tiger Sharks (Ages 6-adult) The Lancaster Tiger Sharks is a yearly swim team. Swimmers are trained in all competitive strokes and develop endurance and strength. The swim team is a great way to increase fitness, learn valuable skills and make new friends. The Lancaster Tiger Sharks compete locally, regionally, and statewide in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF). New swimmers are welcome. Rolling enrollment.

You will be engaging in exercise programs led by virtual qualified instructors. It’s Fitness on request, a comprehensive group fitness solution that combines pre-recordings of several different classes with live class management software. Free with Annual fitness atrium membership or $5 Drop-in.

This class is designed specifically for those who are new to spinning utilizing interval training.

This means you will sit and stand during the ride. You will alternate between light tension with faster pedaling, which simulates riding on a flat ground, with slower pedaling and higher tension, which simulates riding uphill.

Interval training burns fat and builds muscles.

Camp Gladiator Camp Gladiator is a go at your own pace workout designed for men and women of all ages and abilities. Each workout is different and each week they focus on something different: endurance training, functional movements, interval training, and metabolic conditioning. Camps are four weeks, and each workout session is one hour.

Self-Defense Class for Women

A basic course for women, ages 13 and up, on techniques for personal safety, prevention, and self-defense. Physical techniques are built around gross motor skills to escape and survive an attack, using training and repetition to prepare for possible life situations. This class does discuss those hard topics, e.g. sexual assault, date-rape drugs, etc., with the basics of the legality of self-defense included.
