DEAR FRIENDS, We all have fantasies about taking the gloves off and telling someone else exactly how we feel about them.

In two seething rant-arias, and throughout the play in ways large and small, the antagonists in Bad Jews get to do that. It’s ugly, unvarnished, and hilarious.

“I think we often laugh when we recognize something is true,” says playwright Joshua Harmon. Among the truths on offer here: we perform versions of ourselves. Those we’ve grown up around can spot those performances most clearly. Family can bring out our truest selves. And Jewish identity in the modern world is a tricky thing.

Because the play lies right on fault lines in American Judaism and exploits them to full comic effect, Bad Jews is a rare combination: a wicked comic romp and a conversation starter. Apparently it’s a winning formula: Bad Jews, Harmon’s breakout drama, is one of the three most produced plays in America this year.

The production is shepherded by a director who knows how to take the play seriously but not too seriously, and a company of actors—many of whom make their Studio debuts—who aren’t afraid to be ugly and unliked in the service of truth. Truth is the funniest thing around.

TE NO A NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG, ADRIEN-ALICE HANSEL Joshua Harmon’s Bad Jews is a play of opposing viewpoints, of deeply felt convictions. And a play of loud—and long—argument.

This savage comedy unfolds the night after their grandfather’s funeral, as three cousins battle it out over an heirloom—a necklace of a chai, the Hebrew word and symbol for life.

Harmon has created a battle of ideas and birthright, equal parts invective and insight on the many things a single object can come to mean to different people. But while the stakes are real—they couldn’t be higher—Harmon’s mode is comic. Battle-to-the-end, say-what-it-takes, no-blow-too-low comic as the unstoppable force of Super Jew Daphna careens into the immovable object of Nonbeliever Liam, insults and indomitable hair flying.

So who deserves the necklace? Does it go to the True Believer as a symbol of maintaining history and honoring perseverance? Or does it go to the self-declared Bad Jew, who sees it as a symbol of the new beginnings, for his grandfather and himself? Or does honoring Poppy need to take a new form?

There’s only one necklace, and a single winner as these cousins (and a surprise guest) go for the heart and soul of their grandfather’s legacy in this all-out verbal brawl—heartfelt and over-the-top, ridiculous in its extremity but grounded in the deepest beliefs of these very different twentysomethings, each struggling to reflect and magnify the best of what they learned from one remarkable survivor.

IRENE SOFIA LUCIO (Daphna) was recently seen as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion at California Shakespeare Theater. Her other regional theatre credits include Romeo and Juliet and Master Builder at Yale Repertory Theatre, After the Revolution and Golden Gate at Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Amadeus at the Chautauqua Theater Festival. Her New York credits include the Broadway production of Wit with Cynthia Nixon and Off Broadway productions that include: Love and Information at New York Theatre Workshop, We Play for the Gods at the Women’s Project, and Estrella Cruz (the Junkyard Queen) at Ars Nova. Her other credits include Gossip Girl, the film Stranded in Paradise, and the HBO Latino film Casi Casi. Ms. Lucio was a recipient of the Herschel Williams Award for Outstanding Ability in Acting in 2011 and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama Graduate Acting Program. She holds a BA in Comparative Literature and Theater Studies from Princeton University.

ALEX MANDELL (Liam) is making his Studio Theatre debut. Mr. Mandell’s New York credits include Hand to God at MCC, Sleep No More, and the New York premiere of Mary-Kate Olsen is in Love at The Flea Theater. His DC-area work includes Never the Sinner at 1st Stage, which received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Ensemble, and he was most recently seen in Awake and Sing at Olney Theatre Center. Regionally, he has appeared at Powerhouse Theater and Allentown Shakespeare in the Park. Mr. Mandell trained at LAMDA and is a proud graduate of the Boston University School of Theatre.

SARA DABNEY TISDALE (Melody) was recently seen in The T Party at Forum Theatre and Yentl at Theater J. Her other credits include The Minotaur at Rorschach Theatre; A Little Trick at Quotidian Theatre Company; National Smoke Signal Day, Northern Indiana Wildlife Preserve, and The Old Grey Devil at The Source Festival; SubUrbia at LiveArts Charlottesville; The Scarlet Letter with WAMU Public Radio and Lean and Hungry Theater; POP! with Studio 2ndStage; and Pippin at the Edinburgh International Fringe. S ST TI AR JOSHUA HARMON (Playwright)’s play Bad Jews received its world premiere at Roundabout Underground in October 2013. It was the first production to transfer to the Roundabout’s Laura Pels Theatre (Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Award nominations, Best Play). Bad Jews will receive more than a dozen productions around the country this season and had its UK premiere last summer in a critically acclaimed production at Theatre Royal Bath. Mr. Harmon’s other work has been produced and developed by Manhattan Theatre Club, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Hangar Theatre, Ars Nova, and Actor’s Express, where he was the 2010-2011 National New Play Network Playwright-in-Residence. He has received fellowships from MacDowell, Atlantic Center for the Arts, SPACE at Ryder Farm, and the Eudora Welty Foundation. Mr. Harmon recently graduated from the Playwrights Program at Juilliard and is under commission from Roundabout Theatre Company and Lincoln Center Theater.

SERGE SEIDEN (Director) just directed Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing! at Olney Theatre Center. Mr. Seiden is the Producing Director at Studio Theatre, where he has worked since 1990. In 2013 he received the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Director/ Resident Musical for Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris… at MetroStage.

His most recent Studio credits include The Apple Family Plays, The Motherfucker with the Hat, The Golden Dragon, Superior Donuts, In the Red and Brown Water, Grey Gardens, and My Children! My Africa! He also directed Souvenir: A Fantasia on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkins, which received three Helen Hayes Awards and five Helen Hayes Award nominations including Outstanding Director and Outstanding Resident Play; A New Brain, which received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Resident Musical; and Old Wicked Songs, which received seven Helen Hayes nominations, including Outstanding Director. Additional Studio credits include The Long Christmas Ride Home, Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom, Black Milk, The Cripple of Inishmaan, The York Realist, Two Sisters and a Piano, Blue Heart, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, and A Class Act. His theatre for young audiences productions at Adventure Theatre MTC—A Little House Christmas and Charlotte’s Web—were both nominated for Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Production, Theatre for Young Audiences. He has directed several readings for the annual Zeitgeist Festival at the Goethe-Institut and Moth for the National New Play Network. For 17 years Mr. Seiden has been a member of the faculty of the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory, where he trained as an actor and director. Mr. Seiden is a graduate of Swarthmore College. In spring 2015, he will direct Janusz Glowacki’s Hunting Cockroaches at Synetic Theater, featuring Artistic Directors Irina and Paata Tsikurishvili.

LUCIANA STECCONI (Set Designer)’s previous designs for Studio Theatre include The Night Watcher, An Iliad, Lungs, The History of Kisses, Tynan, In the Red and Brown Water, The Year of Magical Thinking, Stoop Stories, Amnesia Curiosa (created and performed by rainpan43), Souvenir, and Lypsinka: The Passion of the Crawford. For Studio 2ndStage, she designed Carrie, Contractions, Astro Boy and the God of Comics, Mojo, Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, 60 Miles to Silver Lake, That Face, A Beautiful View, All That I Will Ever Be, and Crestfall. DANIEL MACLEAN WAGNER (Lighting Designer) served as Resident Lighting Designer at Studio Theatre from 1984-1997, designing more than 50 productions. He recently designed The Apple Family Plays in the Milton Theatre and 4000 Miles in the Mead Theatre. He has designed more than 400 productions at many other theatres, including DC-area theatres Arena Stage, Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre, Round House Theatre, Theatre of the First Amendment, Horizons Theatre, Potomac Theatre Project, Rep Stage, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and Olney Theatre Center. Regionally, his work has been seen at Arden Theatre Company, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Boston Lyric Opera, New Repertory Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, and Portland Stage Company. He is an eight-time recipient of the Helen Hayes Award, for which he has received 28 nominations. Recent designs include Fool for Love, Seminar, and This at Round House Theatre and Freud’s Last Session at Theater J; upcoming productions include The Nutcracker at Round House Theatre and The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore at New Repertory Theatre. Mr. Wagner holds the rank of Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland, where he served as Professor of Lighting Design from 1990-2014 and Director of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies from 2001-2012.

KELSEY HUNT (Costume Designer) is a costume designer based in the DC area. She has designed Carrie: The Musical, Edgar & Annabel, and Skin Tight for Studio 2ndStage.

ADRIEN-ALICE HANSEL (Dramaturg) is Studio Theatre’s Literary Director. At Studio, she has dramaturged the world premieres of Red Speedo, Dirt, Lungs, and The History of Kisses as well as productions of Cock, Moth, Edgar & Annabel, The Apple Family Plays, An Iliad, Invisible Man, Sucker Punch, The Golden Dragon, and The New Electric Ballroom, among others. Prior to joining Studio, she spent eight seasons at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, where she headed the literary department and coordinated project scouting, selection, and development for the Humana Festival of New American Plays. She also served as production dramaturg on roughly 50 new, contemporary, and classic plays

JOSHUA HARMON knew he had a good title when it came to him. Provocative, perhaps, but descriptive and suggestive.

It came on the heels of a “depressingly unmoving” Yom Hashoah service in honor of Holocaust Memorial Day. It was Harmon’s sophomore year of college, and listening to his fellow Millennials attempt to describe their grandparents’ experiences surviving the Holocaust left him feeling both awkward and intrigued.

“The service was strange and sterile, laden with clichés but lacking in genuine feeling.” Shortly thereafter, the title Bad Jews came to his head.

“After the play opened, my grandmother asked me if I would change the title to Good Jews,” Harmon recalls. “I know the title makes people uncomfortable, but I didn’t invent the phrase. It refers to a very particular generation.”

The three cousins of Harmon’s play are all in their twenties, and their extravagant arguments about the ways and whys (and, critically, whether) of contemporary Judaism echoes one of the great questions of Jewish-American identity: To what extent is Judaism a cultural identifier and to what extent is it a religious one? How do you balance assimilation and authenticity? The question is even more distinct among Millennial Jews (those born after 1980), who are more likely than any other generation to identify themselves as Jewish, but having “no religion.” 22% of all American Jews describe themselves as outside the faith, but 32% of Millennial Jews do.

But it’s complicated: The Pew survey found that 83% “Jews of no religion” are proud to be Jewish, but only 42% describe themselves as having a sense of belonging to the Jewish people and 67% are not raising their children Jewish in any way. And the question of “being Jewish” is contested among American Jewry writ large: 73% of US Jews say that remembering the Holocaust is essential to being Jewish, 56% say that working for justice and equality is essential, and—luckily for Harmon and his cheekily titled play— 42% say that having a good sense of humor is essential to being a Jew, good or bad.

JULIANNE MENASSIAN (Stage Manager) is making her Studio Theatre debut. She has stage managed the tours of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and We the People for Theatreworks USA, as well as Christmas with the Calamari Sisters and Cooking with the Calamari Sisters for the 2011 Starquest International Dance Competition. Her local and regional credits include Yentl at Theater J; Titanic at Hangar Theatre; Water by the Spoonful at Lyric Stage Company of Boston; Body Language at Active Theatre; Circle Mirror Transformation, Les Misérables, Shrek the Musical, Once on This Island, Annie Get Your Gun at Weathervane Theatre; and Cooking with the Calamari Sisters at Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. NATHAN NORCROSS (Assistant Director) joins Studio this season as the Artistic Apprentice, serving as the Assistant Director for each Subscription Series production as well as collaborating with the literary department. As a director, Mr. Norcross’ early professional career has spanned a variety of genres and forms—from large-scale musicals to intimate chamber pieces, from developing new plays with living playwrights to developing his own adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Mr. Norcross has worked alongside a number of directors he now counts as valuable mentors, including Mark Lamos, Nicky Martin, Gary Griffin, Bob Moss, and Eric Rosen. He assisted Phylicia Rashad in directing a production of A Raisin in the Sun at the Westport Country Playhouse. Mr. Norcross is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where he earned a BFA in Acting, as well as Florida State University where he recently completed an MFA in Directing.

JACK DOULIN (Casting Director) has been the Casting Director at New York Theatre Workshop since 2000, where his casting work includes Fetch Clay / Make Man; Peter and the Starcatcher; Aftermath; Homebody / Kabul; Caryl Churchill’s Far Away, A Number, and Love and Information; The Beard of Avon (directed by Doug Hughes); and Ivo von Hove’s productions of Hedda Gabler, The Misanthrope, and The Little Foxes. For Soho Rep he has cast Blasted, Elective Affinities, The Ugly One, Uncle Vanya, Jackie Sibblies Drury’s We Are Proud to Present…, A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney, Marie Antoinette, and An Octoroon. Other casting credits in New York include The Persians, Andre Gregory’s productions of Uncle Vanya (with Julianne Moore and Wallace Shawn) and The Master Builder, Edgewise, Creature, Beebo Brinker, Dark Yellow, Living Room in Africa, Orange Flower Water, and The Gin Baby. For Studio Theatre he previously cast Belleville, Cock and The Motherfucker with the Hat. Other regional credits include productions at Long Wharf, Goodman Theatre, Hartford Stage, American Repertory Theatre, Seattle Rep, Pig Iron Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, The Wilma Theater, and Arena Stage. Mr. Doulin’s film casting includes Michael Almereyda’s New Orleans, Mon Amour and Jonathan Demme’s forthcoming film A Master Builder. He was also responsible for the speaking roles in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Le Fille du Regiement. Mr. Doulin teaches at ESPA and in the Drama Division of The Juilliard School.

Studio opens our doors to students and audiences across the region by donating tickets to hundreds of schools, community organizations, and theatres. Our accessibility initiatives have increased the reach of our work, and this production of Choir Boy will reach hundreds of metropolitan DC students through our student matinee program.

WE INVEST IN WRITERS Studio supports new writing from inception to first production: commissioning new work, giving writers time and resources to develop their work, and hosting them in residence during the rehearsal process. This season alone, Studio produced Rachel Bonds’ commission, The Wolfe Twins, and will premiere Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Beth Henley’s Laugh in the spring.

Parking at Studio is easier than it’s ever been with our parking partner—Washington Plaza Hotel.

The hotel’s parking garage is located at 10 Thomas Circle NW, a short walk to your seats at Studio.

TO PARK AT THE WASHINGTON PLAZA HOTEL GARAGE: 1. Drive directly into the garage and park your car (accessible from Vermont Street or Thomas Circle). Payment is not required upon entrance.

2. Walk from the garage up 14th Street to the Theatre (only three blocks up 14th Street).

3. Purchase a parking voucher from Concessions, which opens a half hour before your performance. These parking vouchers are currently priced at a special introductory rate of $13. You may pay with cash, Visa, MasterCard, AmEx or Discover.

4. Upon exiting the garage, present your parking voucher to the garage attendant. (If you did not purchase a parking voucher at the Theatre, or if you misplace it, you will need to pay the garage attendant the standard parking fee of $17.)
