PREFACE

Mixture, Mediator, and the Collective Presence My exploration of the interplay between architecture, landscape, and urbanism was ignited within my hometown of Taiwan. Taiwan's landscape is a mosaic of diverse scales of artificial and natural elements, rendering it an intricate terrain for exploration, particularly from the architectural vantage point. This island has served as a crucible for cultivating in me a profound reverence for the intricate relationship that exists between architecture and its interconnection with society, politics, culture, and, notably, the environment. In this context, I've come to perceive myself as a mediator, endeavoring to harmoniously amalgamate these multifarious elements, diligently seeking cues within this intricate amalgamation with the intent of engendering innovation.

From my perspective, this amalgamation should be construed as an inexorable fusion of historical essence, cultural traditions, and the very soil upon which we tread. Whether this leads to the creation of novel architectural designs or the embrace of innovative approaches, architects are frequently inclined to reference the past. It is paramount to acknowledge that the sole avenue to the authentic preservation and assimilation of historical lessons is through the cultivation of a contemporary architectural perspective. I have coined the term "collective presence" to encapsulate this amalgamation, proffering it as a strategic avenue for contemporary architects to transcend the repercussions of globalization.

Within the Taiwanese milieu, it is not an uncommon occurrence to encounter an urban landscape devoid of meticulous planning, resulting in an environment marked by its disarray. Nevertheless, within this tumultuous milieu, one can discern the effervescent dynamism emanating from a city characterized by ceaseless evolution, rooted in a foundation of layered historical strata. Paradoxically, this dynamism renders it impractical to adhere to the principles of modernism in the pursuit of a 'proper spatial' design. Confronted with the intricate tapestry of modern architectural, urban, and landscape contexts, I am inclined to interpret "collective presence" as an avenue to perpetuate the essence of a locale and its cultural heritage into the future. This is actualized through the establishment of guiding principles, a dialectic exchange with the surrounding environment, and the intrinsic symbiosis between humanity and the spatial context.

My emphasis on public engagement, history, environmental considerations, and the ethical underpinnings of architectural design holds pivotal importance in my architectural philosophy. It ultimately engenders critical architecture, representing the aesthetic ethos of architecture itself. My journey has entailed a relentless pursuit of an equilibrium within this intricate confluence, compelling me to define my distinct architectural principles throughout the course of the diverse projects showcased within this portfolio.

Every project selected here represents a MIXTURE that is essencial for modern architects from my point of view. I repond those mixtures as a mediator with architectural and urban design. _Architectural Succession (file.01) was designed to reach the balance between human and natural needs. As the mixture of artificial and natural facts. _Regionalsim Now: How We Land Genuinely? (file.02) is a post-graduate thesis research project addressing the question of how architects engage with cultural others. Starting from critics on Regionalism and the history of participatory design, the research integrates contemporary ethnographic field methods and modernology documentation established

by Wajiro Kon into architectural field by working with local tribal people and engaging the issue of urban indigenous settlement. _Weather X Weathered (file.03) is an experimental housing project in which I looked back to my inner thoughts systematically as the design discipline, tried to link human sense with exterior climate and presented both structurally and spiritually. _Ground Floor (file.04) is a puzzle game of a set of parallel spaces including a circle within a square scrutinizes the relationship between relative distance and physical interaction: where two intersect without interacting, where rationality coexists with wildness. _Planning of Taoyuan HSR and Art Museum nearby Area (file.05) was an urban planning project assigned from government. As the mixture of design, local people, policies, constructions... and every practical issue contains in urban plan. _After the Monument (file.06) is a cross-discipline community engagement project blending in archaeology, anthroplogy and architecture with the collaboration with a local church in Ithaca. The participatory process has been dedicated to make history roll off the pages into students’ lived experiences.” _KAO - PUÊ (file.07) focused on the living problems in Taiwan's urban area and respond with a modular and tectonic construction system to adapt to exisiting local building types.

Through the strategic placement of vertical structures, a certain degree of flexibility was introduced into the creation of these spaces.

Lightweight constructions fostered activities within the area, enhancing the mobility of loggers amidst the forests.

Humans draw what they need from nature while maintaining a sense of reverence for our Mother Nature. My efforts in logging and mountaineering aim to rectify the imbalanced rapport between humanity and the environment, transforming architecture from a divider into a mediator for the harmonious integration of people and nature.

Throughout history, architecture has consistently existed as an interface between humanity and the natural world.

Over time, conversations have revolved around terms such as ‘transparency’ and ‘blur,’ but I believe it is now time for us to transcend the confines of discussing ‘boundaries’ and instead contemplate how architecture can serve as a “Medium” to blend humanity and the environment.

People engage in various activities in the mountains, from hunting to collecting water, picking fruits, and logging trees for building shelters. We are all born in the lap of nature and nurtured by it. This mutual relationship is underpinned by a delicate balance of supply and demand, with industry playing a vital role in maintaining this equilibrium.

Based on my research, I firmly believe that the process of forest succession unveils the underlying logic of spatial construction.

While the formation of forests may appear haphazard, the distribution of plants and the habitats of animals strictly adhere to hidden rules. Even minor disturbances can delicately alter the state of the forest. This relationship bears a striking resemblance to the dynamics of buildings and space. Just as a wall, a column, or even a chair defines the flow of spaces in its own distinctive manner. I call this a “Stable Balance of Constant Pursuit of Instability.”

Forestry as the Land Digestion System and the Revival of a City The Yilan Dayuanshan forest farm has historical ties to the Taipingshan forest farm, which played a central role in forestry development during the Japanese occupation period.

The transportation between various forestry locations in Dayuanshan used to be facilitated by old forestry railways and ropeways. The Dayuanshan workstation, situated in the heart of the mountains at an altitude of approximately 1200 meters above sea level, served as

In alignment with the Taiwan Forestry Rehabilitation Plan, I endeavored to create a land-digestion system. The forest thinning process requires loggers to transition between different forestry farms every 2-3 years, serving as a tangible manifestation of the interplay between human activities and nature.

The workstation undertakes the entire logging process, encompassing decomposition, storage, and other functions such as unloading wooden sheds, warehouses, log slides, and rainwater collection. By restoring existing structures and creating adaptable spaces, we aimed to fulfill the requirements of both workers and mountaineers.

In 1982, the forest industry was prohibited. After a hiatus of 30 years, the government has initiated plans to revive forestry. The first step involves a process known as “thinning,” where logging is carried out to replace it with trees that offer superior environmental and economic benefits.

Please, Stick to the Schedule in the Mountain In the wilderness, people are compelled to adhere to the schedule dictated by the environment. For my planned two-day mountain trip, I had designated three key spots: the HanXi Indigenous village as our supply depot, the headwaters of Nan'ao North River, and the abandoned Forestry workstation, which includes the ruins of Dayuan school, where we intended to stay overnight.

Our journey began at the HanXi village, where we typically needed to arrive a day in advance of our ascent. This was the only way to ensure that we reached our destination before nightfall. However, a significant challenge we encountered was the absence of suitable public spaces for both climbers and residents in the village.

Water purification plant I opened the water purification plant, so that the purificating process was displayed through the the terrain layering to residents and climbers.

The general module of distance between two trees of artificial forest are 4 meters and 6 meters,and that is also suitable for camping space. The 9 meters water channel sends clear water gentally with gravity. Vertical and over-scale make people keep reverence for natural resources during the water intake process.

Site2. Re-use Water Intake Wooden Bridge Nan'ao North river is a devastated stream. Climbers can usually walk directly on the riverbed. But in the rain season (July - August) , the instantaneous inflow makes water level climb to a maximun of 3 meters.

Using cables and refining structure of the early forest railway track to build the wooden bridge. If it was destroyed by the pouring water, it is not necessary to transport anything from submontane, it can be built again on the spot. With the cables, people can feel the instablility strongly during the process of taking water. I think this as a state of difficulty, danger, and instability in obtaining resources from nature.

Given the inherent challenges of mountain terrain, all transportation activities heavily relied on an oversized logging column system. These columns not only served as central hubs in the forest farm but also held deep spiritual significance.

Dayuan Forestry Workstation

I leveraged this transportation system and reimagined several vertical elements of varying scales, reorganizing them for different purposes to craft distinct spaces.

By strategically placing these vertical elements initially meant for forestry, we added flexibility to create versatile spaces. Lightweight constructions encouraged activities and eased loggers' movements.

Their structural integration into the main collecting column imbued it with structural, spiritual, and symbolic significance.

This thesis addresses a longstanding inquiry concerning the engagement of architects with cultural contexts. The incorporation of ethnographic field methods into architectural practice seeks to transcend the limitations inherent in singular authorial interpretations or loosely focused participatory Processes.

Commencing with an exploration of (critical-) regionalism and participatory design, the focus shifts to the Nan-Jing settlement—an urban indigenous enclave in Taiwan established by the Amis people. Through research and fieldwork conducted in collaboration with local non-profit organizations and tribal groups on-site, the thesis engages ethnographic research to assess the agency of architects and to reassess contemporary perspectives on design.

In this thesis, design is not positioned as the conclusive outcome of the architect’s contribution; rather, it is conceived as a dialogical medium and analytical tool for both the architect and the

community. This approach facilitates envisioning diverse possibilities and understanding their implications. For the community, design as scenario-building serves to pose unanticipated questions and elicit the imagination of alternative scenarios. The designs entailing various scales of urban agriculture proposed at the end of this thesis represents one of the potential futures cultivated through the architect’s engagement and dialogue with the local community.

In essence, the agency of architects in this project lies not in proposing a prescriptive architecture to be built, but rather in bringing their expertise to scrutinize, think expansively, and collaboratively theorize “with” the individuals whom they engage.

WHY ETHNOGRAPHY Ethnography, etymologically derived from “describing (graphing) the people,” transcends its literal meaning to encompass a multifaceted exploration of culture, extending even to the tangible expressions of human civilization, including architectural marvels.

This intricate discipline delves into the intricate fabric of cultural phenomena, adopting the perspective of its subjects. Ethnography thus unfolds as a form of rigorous social inquiry, demanding astute observation and interpretation of participants’ behaviors within

specific social milieus, alongside an exploration of how these individuals construe their own actions.

Contemporary ethnography, in its current manifestation, predominantly hinges on immersive fieldwork, notably when addressing complex issues such as ethnic identities, cultural preservation, and political quandaries. This intensive engagement necessitates an anthropologist’s profound integration into the very essence of the culture under scrutiny, submerging oneself in the daily lives of the people being studied.

REGIONALISM NOW

This symbiotic relationship between researcher and culture is particularly pivotal in the realm of Social and Cultural Architecture, where the centrality of human presence in spatial design is paramount. Ethnography emerges as an indispensable tool within this context, offering architects and designers invaluable insights into crafting designs that resonate with the diverse tapestry of cultural and socioeconomic values inherent to their communities.

MODERNOLOGY DOCUMENTATION 考現學民族筆記 The detailed depiction in modernology drawing is invariably linked to references to external elements and patterns of communities. However, in the past two decades, architectural ethnography has leaned towards focusing on the spatiotemporal characteristics of individual “perceptual worlds” and their relationship with the architectural environment. Tomito architecture have demonstrated both the objective and subjective aspects of public space utilization by illustrating the close relationship between users, behavior, and the environment through their profound project CASACO.

In the project, architects involved in the transformation unfold daily life events in both temporal and spatial dimensions and establish connections. This illustrates the “ecology” of this neighborhood across five stages: historical background, neighborhood formation, project conception, transformation process, and project opening.

Architectural ethnography also continues the techniques of modernology drawing established by Wajiro Kon (18881973), liberating the depicted objects from the confines of the same place, time, and scale in the mapped space. Through

the flow and superimposition of seemingly unrelated elements and objects on the surface, it reflects their underlying relationships, revealing the temporal dimension of architecture.

Amis Housing Transformation: Meet the External Forces The historical documentation of Amis culture was sparse until the early period of Japanese occupation due to the absence of written records by the aboriginal inhabitants.

Notably, it was in the 1930s, during the Japanese colonial era, that scholar Suketaro Chijiwa conducted an investigation into the traditional houses of the Amis.

His findings were presented in the Taiwan Indigenous Survey Report, marking a seminal contribution to the understanding of Amis culture.

The transformation of Amis houses over the past century can be broadly categorized into five phases: original, forced revising, meeting Han culture, attempting to be modern, and identity recall. While additional information and data, such as plans, sections, elevations, and environmental conditions, are required for an in-depth analysis of each phase, this overview highlights the political and social impacts shaping the evolution of Amis housing.

I posit that the selection of species for cultivation in this locale, whether intentional or inadvertent, bears a profound connection to the wild plants traditionally harvested or collected by the community. The transition from gathering wild vegetables to deliberate cultivation is intriguing. This shift not only demands a foundational understanding of the targeted plants but also implies an intention to emulate or recreate the familiar natural environment within this urban context as the community embarks on a new chapter in their collective journey. A comprehensive approach has been devised to outline potential funding sources that the tribal association and the affiliated non-profit organization (NPO) could pursue.

This encompassing strategy includes avenues from both governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Each identified fund corresponds to specific facets of the agricultural development project, facilitating a step-by-step progression. Key areas of support include water infrastructure, soil preparation, transportation, marketing initiatives, and the implementation of soft programs such as education and elderly care.

This systematic delineation ensures that resources are strategically allocated to address each stage of establishing the envisioned agricultural future. By securing support from diverse funding sources, the tribal association and the collaborating NPO can holistically approach the project, addressing both tangible aspects, like water infrastructure and soil preparation, and sociocultural components, such as educational and elderly care programs. This comprehensive funding plan is designed to underpin the successful execution of each stage in the development of the agricultural initiative.

"Weather" extends beyond "climate." It's a tangible phenomenon, a descriptor characterized by the temporal and material state changes. This phenomenon exists in the dimensions of space and time, continually felt and experienced. We can also view "weather" as the dynamic bridge between humanity and the environment.

As a medium that operates within the framework of time and space, architecture's reflection and consideration of "weather" are often understated o r e v e n l a c k i n g. A r c h i t e c t u r e h a s b e e n conventionally perceived as a static element or container, yet it cannot be comprehended in isolation from its environment.

In contrast, humans embody a state of perpetual flux and instability. Acknowledging this, I reexamine the intricate interplay between our ontic awareness, the environment, and space. This endeavor seeks to transcend the conventional notion of architecture as a mere framework or "shape" to be observed.

Phase 1.

Images Re-cognition In the initial phase, I arbitrarily selected 300 images without strict criteria. I then paired two related images and, through parallel comparison, restructured them to symbolize the underlying connection between these pairs of images. The objective was to unearth the latent commonality among these groups of images and encapsulate it with a succinct keyword.

EXTREMUM The objective of this phase was to translate the keyword into visible mediums, such as drawings and models.

Rather than focusing on materiality, I aimed to leverage the inherent characteristics of the materials and media to realize the project.

I utilized the keyword "EXTREMUM" to encapsulate the relationships I had identified in those sets of images. It signifies a sudden, dramatic shift in status.

Weather, with its intricate and unpredictable nature, is in constant flux, constituting a perpetual natural cycle.

Within a cloud, water droplets condense onto one another, causing the droplets to grow. When these water droplets get too heavy to stay suspended in the cloud, they fall to Earth as rain.

I put my emphasis on this dynamic phenomenon.

Phase 2.

Translation Model, Material and A Window During Phase 2, my objective was to transform the emotions, experiences, and outcomes from Phase 1 into tangible physical models. In this process of concretization, I developed models from three distinct perspectives: Initiative light, Passive light, and a novel window design. These models aimed to render the concepts from Phase 1 visible, tangible, and comprehensible, with a focus on reinterpreting the window, an element already familiar in our daily lives.

The direct path of light naturally establishes a distinct boundary when the micro-protrusions on the smooth surface obstruct the light.

The shadowed area isn’t uniformly dark because of the varying slopes on the elastic cloth, causing the interaction between shadow and light to gradually fade. The interplay of light and shadow builds up to a critical peak, resulting in an instantaneous and dramatic shift from brightness to darkness. Rainwater Drainage

When it rains, the water descends onto the window and flows through the triangular window frame, collecting in the deep trough of the windowsill. After the rain has ceased, the trough becomes filled with water. If the window is opened, the pulley system is activated, causing it to descend into the water accumulated in the sill.

This causes the water to overflow along the slim part of the trough’s edge. The expelled water droplets fall into a puddle on the ground, generating ripples on the water’s surface. These ripples are also reflected on the wall, creating an enlarged, illuminated reflection akin to the play of light.

In addition to light, I introduced another natural element into this window design water. Building upon the insights gained from the droplet work in Phase 1, I discovered that the visual effect is enhanced when two different mediums intersect. The window system comprises a set of pulleys, a triangular window frame, and a pivotal component, an elongated windowsill with a curved trough.

Experimental Design: A Weather House Livable and praticable architecture to reflect human, environment, time, material and immaterial

Sunlight plays a pivotal role in this conceptualization. In the course of a day, the most pronounced climate sensation typically emerges at dusk.

During sunset, as the sun’s angle tilts, the light undergoes refraction, transforming into a warm red radiance that is both penetrating and evocative.

H o w e v e r, t h e s e p r o f o u n d alterations transpire within the brief span of half an hour.

My emphasis centered on this swift and dramatic transition, as I sought to reestablish the connection between the environment and human perception through the interplay of super- scaled and micro scaled circumstances.

House No. 06 is a set of parallel spaces that are created for three types of users: the keeper, the artist, and the visitor. This puzzle game of a circle within a square scrutinizes the relationship between relative distance and physical interaction: where two intersect without interacting, where rationality coexists with wildness.

The squared house, a 2.5 meter wide linear hallway dedicated for the keeper’s living space and public exhibition space, surrounds the circular house, another 2.5 meter wide serpentine hallway for the artist’s residency. Just as the keeper guards the artist; the calm protects the vibrancy.

The three users enter through a single corner, from there, their journey begins to diverge.

The visitor is attracted into a narrow aisle and follows the lead of the curved wall that guides them to an area of tranquility. The water act as the threshold between the visitor’s path and the exterior exhibition wall, forcing the visitors to appreciate the mural art from a curated distance. The curved nature of the path allows the visitors journey to be

constantly full of unexpectedness.

The keeper lives in the same geometrical dimension as the visitors, where their circulation paths mirror their daily activities and duties - guarding the estate. The access to the rooftop allows the keeper to watch over the whole architecture and the surrounding areas.

Finally, the circle house and the central garden are private only to the artist. The interconnectedness of the interior and exterior programs shadows a reverberating oscillating “landscape” - a productive ground that aims to stimulate creative pursuits. The narrow spaces are interrupted with large openings into the garden, connecting daily routines, sleeping areas, kitchen, and studio spaces, to the performative playground.

In the future, the urban development of Qingpu will integrate with the ongoing plan for the Taoyuan International Airport City and the commercial core adjacent area. This combined vision will leverage the area’s abundant hydrological resources and incorporate art and culture-related pavilions into the planned space. As a result, Qingpu will transform into a dynamic modern urban center, blending business, shopping, art, culture, and residential elements.

The public environment within the planned area will be designed to create a spatial texture that seamlessly weaves together business, shopping, art, culture, with a contemporary and international perspective. In response to the diverse needs of businesses, shopping, art, culture, and residential areas, the commercial streets within the planned area should be thoughtfully categorized into distinct types, including shopping streets, cultural boutique trails, quality lifestyle shops, and more.

Furthermore, the project area boasts numerous river channels, ponds, and public green spaces. These natural waterfronts and greens are not only key focal points but also potential assets of Qingpu. They have the capacity to cultivate a stronger connection between the public and the environment, creating spaces that are intimately linked to nature. The banks of streams, ecological ponds, green expanses, and grassy ditches have been thoughtfully designed to shape an ecologically conscious and modern green city.

In addition to preserving the existing environment, the waterfront areas offer an opportunity to cultivate a range of activities that allow people to live closely with the water. The vicinity of the museum will evolve into a multifaceted urban hub that encompasses various aspects of a well-structured and livable living environment. It will feature clearly delineated shopping avenues, green pathways for daily life, a modern public transportation system, and a comprehensive network for pedestrians and cyclists.

Below the MRT A19 station and below the elevated MRT in the art gallery area, it becomes a pedestrian walking area that combines the S slow lane.

The space beneath the bridge under the elevated MRT on South High-speed Rail Road will be designated as a waiting, resting, and transit area for buses to embark and disembark. With durable paving, public seating, nighttime illumination, and some arboreal elements, this underpass will aesthetically merge with the available lane on the north side and become an integral part of the public area, harmonizing with the sidewalk on the north side. This extension enhances the urban open space's overall texture.

The spare lane on the northwest side can also serve as a temporary pedestrian zone when collaborating with the art museum to host large-scale events. This allows the event crowds to disperse and find respite in this area.

Additionally, the space beneath the bridge under the elevated MRT can be repurposed for under-bridge lighting installations and art craft displays, or transformed into a performance plaza for street performers. This transforms it 立體聯通系統（ into a highly artistic and vibrant space, particularly during the evening hours. to Mall 往華泰名品店

First Touch: Redesign of Wen-De Street Corner Plaza Taking inspiration from the facade design of the Taoyuan Museum of Art Vision Hall by Riken Yamamoto Architects and JOE SHIH ARCHITECTS, the building's exterior features a checkerboard-style division system. It consists of a clean and graceful white backdrop with discrete architectural elements and square glass windows.

We've incorporated this one-dimensional aesthetic into the concept of plaza paving design, employing a checkerboard-like segmentation system for the ground tiles. Using 30x30 cm tiles in natural, white, and gray shades, complemented by color-changing accents, we aim to evoke an elegant and balanced atmosphere.

This design highlights the architectural aesthetics of the pavilion and anticipates the future development of the surrounding area.

The project is centered on the history of the St. James AME Zion Church, which is thought to be the oldest standing church in Ithaca. The church played an important role in the Underground Railroad for local abolitionists and hosted leaders of the movement such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass.

In conversation with Rev. Terrance A. King, who is the current pastor of St. James, we learned that many of the memories of this place are carried as oral histories by members of the congregation, yet few people in the local community are even aware of the history. There is an imperative to share these stories more broadly to gain support for the hard work of maintaining the church as a living monument. With our project, we seek to shine a light on the history of the Underground Railroad in Ithaca by exploring and mapping its physical markers with elementary students. In the words of Pastor King, “We want to make history roll off the pages into students’ lived experiences.”

The project evolved in conversation with Rev. Terrance King and Nick Sledziona of the St. James AME Zion Church, Archaeologist Samantha Sanft of the archaeological department, AAP faculty members Professor Maria Gonzalez Pendas, Suzanne Lettieri, and Peter Robinson, as well as Professor Gerard Aching, founder of the Underground Railroad Research Project.

Based on these conversations, we found that many individuals are engaged in documenting different aspects of the history of the underground railroad at St. James and that there was an opportunity to present the incredible work being carried out by others in a new way. Our proposal sought to integrate findings from the archaeological digs and the ever-growing historical archive of St.James into an educational medium that could support the storytelling capacity of Pastor Rev. King and the St. James Congregation.

AFTER THE MONUMENT . UNEARTHING THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

The final deliverable ultimately became an exhibition model for the storage and display of artifacts unearthed during archaeological digs initiated in 2021 by faculty from the Cornell Institute of Archaeology & Materials Studies (CIAMS) in collaboration with Rev. King.

Thus far, these digs have yielded over 2,000 artifacts related to daily practices at the site of the old parsonage adjacent to the church, such as: cooking (pieces of ceramic plates, animal bones, fruit seeds); play (toys); adornment (buttons, cuff link, beads); faith (pieces of stained glass); and resilience (building materials) which together tell a story about the St. James community since the days of the Underground Railroad. Upon the conclusion of the dig, CIAMS will return these cataloged artifacts to the St. James congregation so they may continue to share their history in years to come. Therefore the first function of our exhibition model was to create a vessel for the storage and display of important artifacts and documents related to the history of the church.

The buildings on the model include the church, the new parsonage, and two adjacent residential buildings. Not only is St. James the largest element of the model but also the most detailed in order to emphasize its importance and unique architectural character.

All other elements are simplified as much as possible in deference to the church.

Based on the scanned digital model of the church produced by Cyark, the physical model is designed to be as accurate as possible given the constraints of the chosen scale and materials used. Stone patterns, siding, and other details from the facade of the church like the rose window were etched into the model using a laser cutter. In contrast to the exterior, the interior of the model was not intended to accurately represent the church but instead to serve as an exhibition space for objects relevant to the congregation today. The interior is painted a rich red color in reference to the carpet in the sanctuary of the church.

Demonstration at St.James AME Zion Church In late May, we extended invitations to the congregation, faculty members, classmates, and a photographer to join us for the model presentation. However, due to the timing of Rev. King’s imminent departure for South Africa and the coinciding Memorial Day in 2023, we regretfully couldn’t directly engage with the congregation.

Nonetheless, the presence of Rev. King and Nick Sledziona generated an atmosphere of excitement among those who were able to attend.

We thoughtfully arranged food and refreshments to accompany a relaxed presentation of the project in the garden adjacent to the church.

Subsequently, we transitioned into the church for a presentation led by Nick, the church historian, showcasing the historical archive he had diligently compiled over the years.

As we had envisioned, this open demonstration and ensuing discussions triggered a flurry of questions and ideas from individuals representing diverse backgrounds and knowledge. It is our fervent hope that this humble gathering has laid the groundwork for a multitude of future conversations within the community. Just a fortnight later, the model assumed a central role during the Juneteenth celebration at St. James, where Nick guided numerous visitors on a tour of the church, culminating in a gathering around the model. One of these tours included a visit by the mayor and the chief of the fire department.

This model is poised to serve a similar purpose in the upcoming fall celebration marking the 190th anniversary of St. James. It will act as a backdrop against which the congregation can share the many significant stories with the broader community.

KAO - PUÊ is a Taiwanese saying for a custom rooted in our sociable nature; it stands for hangouts, making friends, and spending time together. We hope our new construction process of making a home would add to the KAO - PUÊ tradition and become a festival that is worth celebrating. Therefore, the Modular Home we proposed comes with a simple construction method that allows residents a lot easier to join the assemble process together.

In Taiwan, the high-density population has shaped the problems of unaffordable housing prices and insufficient space, making "extension home" a unique building type.

From this premise, the modular house must be constructed most economically, but also solve the problem of lacking living spaces. By dismantling the house into the most lightweight structure, the components can be transpor ted to any site within a small truck and assembled easily.

We select 4 common housing types in Taiwan as a demonstration, including Long street houses, Cour tyard houses, Walk-up apar tments, and High-rise Housing. The prevailing of Modular Home can not only ameliorate current space problems but create new living possibilities. The urban landscape will therefore be reshaped.

KAO - PUÊ offers a chance for "Modular Home" to be no longer just an industrialized product, but also a place for people to share memories.

With the proposal of the Modular unit, resident can not only expand the living space, but also improve the construction efficiency and diversify the use of the space according to any situation. The space on the roof matches the characteristics of the street house. Different ways to use the public space on the roof can be developed according to the amount of street houses, which liberates the original inward living space to become a new living style, more public and more creative.

The Taiwanese courtyard house is generally formed by multiple generations of families enclosing from three directions, and the courtyard becomes a public area for communication.

Through additional construction, the old houses are provided with water space and multi-functional living rooms that were previously lacking. As the number of occupants changes, new residential units can be built from the two wings. By removing the roof between the modular house and the old house to introduce light, each family will form its own public corridor space. With the changes in the family structure, both new and original spaces can be easily transformed to fit different usages and it will also be a chance to redefine the traditional thinking about the Taiwanese courtyard house.

TYPE 04 : HIGH-RISE HOUSING Hanging Publicness : Against the excrescence of harsh urban development.

Taiwan's high-rise residential buildings are facing the problems of insufficient public space and limited quality of the private area.

The modular units readjust the living space of high-rise houses. It is added to the existing building in a way of external hanging, creating the possibility of a greener façade, expanding the private realm as well as new open spaces, which provides the emotional connection of the neighborhood that modern urbanites have long forgotten.

PUBLICATION Weather X Weathered 7 Houses 7 Ideas 7 Images 7 Drawings _CO-EDITOR The book "Towards a Critical Practice" serves as a comprehensive record of studio reviews and exhibitions. It encapsulates a central challenge that has persisted for decades within architectural education worldwide: how to bridge the divide between academia and practice in the field of architecture.

We have employed a uniform format for each architectural proposal, idea, image, and essay, deliberately balancing the proportions. This approach underscores our commitment to a design process rooted in a single, meticulously refined idea born from the designer's profound understanding.

We consider this publication format as the sole means to seamlessly merge the distinctive design process with the overarching questions that have been explored throughout the entire duration of the studio term and exhibition.

Design Amusement Park - Research Report and Project Review _EDITOR In this research about places for amusement in modern urban area, we focused on 4 sectors of entertainment: History, Policy, Program and Typology. After months of observation, discussion and analysis, we provided narrative architecture and urban proposals based on the research.

APPENDIX. 01 / PUBLICATION

We seperated the content into two books, one for research(Black) and one for architecture ideas(White). The research book contains diagrams and illustrations about the history and typology of modern entertainment, including theme parks like Corney island, festivals like Universal Expo, vacation resorts, gambling, virtual reality...,and so on. On top of that, we analysised more than 200 selected cases with on-site observation.

As the group leader, I organized the format and visual plan for this publication and organized the content offered by every participant. We explored and redefined the human activities and places for amuement in this modern era.

PRODUCT DESIGN Designing Resilience in Asia (DRIA) is an International Research Programme focused on urban and architectural resilience, which was inaugurated in June 2014. This initiative is led by the School of Design and Environment (SDE) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and is executed in partnership with the Department of Architecture at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwan, marking its first occurrence in 2019.

The core objective of DRIA is to stimulate and nurture indepth research and discussions concerning inventive concepts and proposals for enhancing the resilience of Asian cities in response to the environmental challenges brought about by climate change. This initiative brings together research, education, and capacity-building endeavors, with a specific emphasis on translating research findings into practical urban and architectural design solutions and innovative

This critique delves into the perspectives of both educational institutions and architectural firms regarding architectural practice. It questions whether architecture education serves as an ivory tower to escape the real world or merely functions as a training ground for acquiring practical skills.

The relationship between theory and practice often appears to be polarized within the realm of architecture.

This raises the question of how both sides can expand their conceptualization of architecture. If architects exclusively build for pragmatic purposes and colleges solely focus on theoretical constructs, it becomes crucial to explore avenues that bridge the gap between these practical and theoretical dimensions of the field.

Hence, this exhibition is titled "Research and Construction, Academy X Workstation." The deliberate absence of the term "office" emphasizes our aim to draw closer to research and work. The subtitle, "Toward a Critical Practice," should not be interpreted as a critique or inactivity. Instead, it signifies a vital component of the broader context.

The fundamental essence of architectural practice revolves around the pursuit of architecture's foundational principles.

Designing Resilience In Asia 2019 International competition and symposium JULY, 2019 _ORGANIZING TEAM. CURATOR. CO-EDITOR Each year, the event conference selects a specific site from the Rockefeller Foundation’s list of 100 Resilient Cities as the focus of the design competition. This competition attracts more than 500 passionate students specializing in architecture, planning, urban design, landscape, and building science from across the globe.

As the hosting institution, we view this as an opportunity to facilitate collaboration between academic institutions and practical firms. Our primary goal is to deepen our understanding of resilient design and bridge the divide between academia and practice. This initiative enables us to expand the impact of the international program by incorporating new researchers, partners, and ideas, leading to the development of applied research projects, consultations, workshops, courses, publications, exhibitions, and symposiums.

Every thesis design is the first step into the real world.

As the curator, I believe that the value of thesis project exhibition is not only the revealing of the outcome but more the continuous reflection and dialogue. So that we tried to use only one material(metal waterpipe) to build up every shelf, handle, and frame that we need in the exhibition, making every element homogenized to show the pure spirit of the projects.

The students embark on their journey by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the base's keywords.

They proceed to spell out these keywords, fostering a collaborative atmosphere to delve into the meticulous aspects of quilting. This collaborative approach aims to enrich their understanding and enhance their ability to produce detailed graphics, labels, maps, and formulations associated with these fundamental keywords.

SI-CON, at its core, revolves around the fundamental principles of basic knowledge, intellectual acumen, and creative processes. It serves as a training ground for resilient students, equipping them with the skills to intricately depict and replicate complex sculptures, themes, and photos. The demanding nature of this environment challenges students to learn, adapt, and master intricate and multifaceted techniques, akin to unraveling the intricacies of complex magic.

In concert with the students, we embarked on a mission to craft a tangible apparatus that facilitates site observation and recording. Guided by specific keywords, this device, essentially a filter, is custom-designed to align with each set of keywords. It operates by assimilating sensory inputs from the five senses, incorporating psychological elements, and considering societal factors, creating a comprehensive framework that encompasses a wide range of sensory impressions.

WAY TO SCHOOL Urban Thinking Lectures and Cake Workshop for Junior High Students in Taoyuan July-Oct, 2021 _CURATORIAL MANAGER. LECTURER

• Urban Imagination • Public Space • Social Engagement • Knowledge Popularization In the heart of Taoyuan city, there exists a multitude of challenges related to urban human transportation, particularly for students who traverse precarious paths to reach their schools.

In response to this, we undertook a proactive approach by organizing workshops designed to engage both teachers and students. These workshops encouraged participants to reevaluate the urban environment and road infrastructure surrounding schools in Taoyuan. The aim was to explore new possibilities for the traffic network in proximity to the school area.

During these workshops, students were provided with various edible materials and tasked with decorating cakes inspired by the streets around their schools. This hands-on exercise served as a representation of their ideal school route, prompting them to contemplate environmental enhancements and the future development of our cities.

APPENDIX. 04 / SYMPOSIUM

I view these activities as a form of social engagement. Through a combination of lectures and interactive workshops, we not only empowered children to observe the world around them but also cultivated their awareness of public spaces.

Additionally, we encouraged them to express their opinions and fostered essential critical thinking skills that extend beyond the confines of traditional schoolwork.

The symposium was meticulously crafted to address fundamental questions concerning the practice of architecture, which encompasses research. It aimed to delineate, first and foremost, the concept of research within our discipline, explore the diverse methodologies and forms that research can assume, and underscore how it significantly informs the practice of design, especially within the context of architectural firms.

Furthermore, the symposium delved into the evolving landscape where practice extends beyond the creation of concrete designs to offer architectural services in a broader sense.

Our distinguished panel of speakers, all actively engaged in practices that encompass a spectrum of research forms, was thoughtfully selected by the students. Importantly, they are Cornell alumni, whose work epitomizes international exemplars of design research and engagement, showcasing various facets of research in practice.

The overarching goal of this project is to envision the campus as a living embodiment of future smart lifestyles. In our quest to make this vision a reality, we honed in on three specific areas within the campus, with a special emphasis on addressing the issue of energy waste.

To bring our vision to life, we leveraged the remarkable qualities of Epaper, a cuttingedge material known for its flexibility and adaptable form, all while consuming minimal electricity. Through a carefully designed modularity system, we transformed the material into a customizable façade. This dynamic façade features a collaged matrices pattern that can display a myriad of information and graphics, making it both visually engaging and informative.

Moreover, we took an innovative step by connecting the installation to the school's database. This integration allows us to access and showcase real-time environmental and energy consumption data, thereby transforming this installation into a tangible gateway to sustainable and intelligent living.
