Mission Founded in 1947, the Waldorf School of Garden City offers an engaging, hands-on, and academically rigorous school curriculum. The Waldorf School of Garden City educates children to meet the world with purpose, gratitude, and respect. Our curriculum, inspired by Rudolf Steiner, progresses in accordance with child development, awakening students to the experience of knowledge, strengthening their sense of moral responsibility, and empowering them to act with courage and conviction. The School’s aim is to graduate a diverse group of people distinguished by the scope and acuity of their minds as well as the depth and integrity of their character.

A National Merit Commended Scholar and former class president, Sheppard worked with faculty and students to develop and implement an academic honor code. An exceptional German student, Sheppard studied abroad in Germany, and earned top marks on the American Association of Teachers of German national exam. At the Waldorf School of Garden City, he designed and built surfboards, was soccer and basketball team captain, and managed the after-school snack stand, raising thousands of dollars for charity. CONCERT PIANIST Shuyi Chen '15 arrived in ninth grade as an international student from China. She left the comforts of home to obtain an education in the U.S. that was rich in the arts and that would nurture her incredible musical talent. A concert pianist, she filled our hallways with beautiful, rich music — a talent which she further nurtured at the Manhattan School of Music on the weekends. In her high school years, Shuyi explored other parts of her artistic self, creating compelling photographic mosaics. She is attending the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford.

In 1946, William Harrer, a Waldorf teacher, decided that it was time to fulfill his long-held dream to begin a summer camp where children would be nurtured by wholesome camp activities and life on a farm, surrounded by woodlands, meadows, streams, and fresh air. He found the perfect spot, Glen Brook Farm in the town of Marlborough in southern New Hampshire. In the shadow of Mount Monadnock, he worked night and day with determination and love to transform this historic 1776 farm into the camp of his dreams. Mr. Harrer dedicated his physical, social, and financial resources to this cause and his dream came true. What began as a summer camp in 1946, serving a handful of campers and grounded in the values of Waldorf education, has evolved over the past 70 years into a vibrant year-round educational facility, serving children, youth, and families from across the United States and other countries as well. *Note: Camp Glen Brook is a year-round educational facility owned and operated by the Waldorf School of Garden City.

CHAIRMAN & CEO, AMERICAN EXPRESS During Mr. Chenault’s tenure, he has been credited with ushering in a period of solid growth at American Express. Recognized by a wide variety of civic, social service, and community organizations for his public service leadership, he was awarded the Phoenix House Public Service Award, the Corporate Responsibility Award from the International Rescue Committee, and the Wall Street Rising Leadership Award, among others.

INTERIOR DESIGNER Winner of the seventh season of HGTV Design Star in July 2012, Ms. Colding was born in New York City and is principal of her own firm. A self-described problem solver, Ms. Colding characterizes her design style as global chic, classic modern, and edited traditional. A former professional modern dancer, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Stanford University.
RACHEL VON ROESCHLAUB '87
MOLECULAR BIOLOGIST, ARTIST Ms. Von Roeschlaub served as a molecular biologist at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, where she participated in cancer research and managed the genome facility. Ms. Von Roeschlaub’s passion for science and art intertwined in 2003 when her whimsical acrylic paintings of biological themes were featured on the covers of leading industry magazines and journals.

TARIK CARNEY '02
UNITED NATIONS Mr. Carney has worked for the United Nations since 2006 in the Department of Management, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the Department of Field Service, and Department of Peacekeeping Operations, respectively. Mr. Carney has studied at Jochi Daigaku and Kokusai Kurisuto Daigaku in Japan, and at Nanjing Daxue in China. He is a graduate of New York University, holding a B.A. in philosophy and Japanese.
RICK SCHUHMANN '77
SENIOR LECTURER, MIT Dr. Schuhmann’s university teaching experience spans civil and environmental engineering, and entrepreneurship and leadership curricula with a focus on sustainability and global collaboration. He is active in international water resource engineering projects, and in supporting U.S. State Department efforts to promote innovative engineering enterprise development in North Africa.
RACHEL LINDSAY '00
AGRICULTURE CONSULTANT Rachel Wyatt Lindsay lives in Nicaragua, where she works as a consultant on community agriculture, fair trade, and food security projects. She came to Nicaragua in 2009 with a Fulbright grant to study innovative ways to join financing and technical assistance to farmers in order to promote more successful sustainable agriculture. A graduate of Wesleyan University, Ms. Lindsay majored in cultural anthropology.
