The Cody Experience

0 6 T he C ody E xperience

Hello! As third-generation owners, our family proudly spans 60 of Camp Cody’s 90 years. This is our life’s work, and we are completely dedicated to everything summer camp is about. As directors, we appreciate the trust you place in us each summer, and we take our responsibility for your camper’s experience very seriously. Accordingly, our primary focus is maintaining a safe and respectful environment that encourages both personal growth and creates an unforgettable summer experience. At Cody, there are numerous opportunities for emotional and social growth. We support campers in expanding their curiosity and natural abilities while developing teamwork and group dynamics. In our nurturing environment, staff members model integrity, empathy and respect. Teaching and practicing the skills of building and maintaining friendships is central to what we do. We emphasize the importance of good character and promote an awareness of personal well-being that translates into positive social experiences. The end result is that our campers gain confidence, self-esteem, independence and resilience. At Cody, campers share a fun, exciting and rewarding experience with great new friends — some of whom they’ll know a lifetime. Countless adults look back on their experience at Cody as one of the best times of their lives and a defining chapter of their youth. Our family looks forward to providing your camper with this life-changing experience! Sincerely,

CAMP CODY DIRECTOR

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The 4 C’s of Cody The Cody philosophy represented in the four C’s of Cody: Community, Caring, Can-Do, and Courage. These values inform our daily experiences.

C O MMUNI T Y

C AR I N G

A sense of connectedness is what makes the Cody experience extraordinary. We take pride in being a small community in which campers are familiar with peers, counselors and staff. Our daily all-camp assemblies bring friendly faces together in celebration of the Cody way.

At Cody, everyone is cared for and everyone is caring. A feeling of togetherness and familiarity with one another means that counselors care for campers on a deeper level, but also that campers look out for one another. Kindness, empathy and caring is at the heart of Camp Cody.

CAN- DO

C O UR AGE

Counselors and staff members always have a positive attitude and are committed to helping campers have the best summer ever. They know what camp is like and will do (and can-do!) anything to ensure that summers at Cody are filled with remarkable experiences.

Being at camp for the summer often takes courage. That’s why we work hard to maintain a safe, inclusive environment where campers are comfortable trying new things. Whether it’s getting up on water skis, forging new friendships or trying new foods, campers can discover themselves at Camp Cody.

BUNK LIFE

Summer Family Coming to camp can be challenging for both families and campers, but remember that Camp Cody is one big family! Here, we want campers to feel right at home. H O M E A W AY F R O M H O M E

At Camp Cody, we strive to make our campers feel as if they were right at home. Our counselors are supportive and work to maintain a harmonious atmosphere within the cabins. As such, these spaces are welcoming, warm and inclusive and cabins are considered a close-knit group of friends that feel like family. CABIN BUDDIES

To ensure a positive cabin experience, campers are placed in cabins where they are bound to thrive. It is important to our staff that campers feel connected to their cabin mates through shared interests, without sacrificing diversity. Campers come from all walks of life. In order to maintain an inclusive atmosphere at Cody, our staff members work hard to plan a cabin family that is as unified as it is diverse.

T H E D AY-T O - D AY

Cabin mates work together to maintain the cabin, do chores, plan fun activities or just hang out during rest hour. Bunk buddies will eat in the Dining Hall side-by-side, compete in color wars together or go on lively outdoor adventures. Through rewarding daily experiences alongside best friends, our goal is to make each cabin feel just like home.

OUR TEAM

Cody Family Philip has dedicated over thirty years of his life to making Camp Cody a world-class summer experience. As Director, he oversees camp operation, builds friendships with families and fosters a nurturing environment for campers to call home. His dedication and enthusiasm make Cody the exciting, well-rounded camp it is today.

Sheri joined the Cody Family in 2001, working alongside Philip (her husband) as Camp Director. With a degree in Business Administration, Sheri brings years of working experience to Cody and oversees the camp and communications yearround. Sheri most enjoys building long-lasting relationships with Cody families.

After graduating from Mercyhurst University with a degree in Sports Business Management, Gui discovered Camp Cody in 2012 and quickly found his passion. In the off-season, Gui assists the Directors in all facets of summer camp operation, including summer staffing, facility operations and camper recruitment.

PROGRESSIVE PROGRAMMING

Grow Your Schedule At Cody, we believe that programs and activities should grow just as the campers do. This way, each child has a unique programming experience tailored to them, their interests, skill levels and goals. We believe in Progressive Programming, which means that no two camper experiences are quite the same and every camper has a different schedule. While each camper will experience activities with their cabin group throughout the day, campers are free to choose what they love. From lanyard-making to cooking, fencing to wakeboarding and everything in between, campers explore what they choose. The customizable, flexible schedules suit individual interests, abilities and goals while matching skill levels and difficulty with a camper’s age. Lesson plans are carefully crafted to ensure that campers excel during their time with us, and our “perfectly packed” schedules still give them time to relax and have fun.

1 6 T he C ody E xperience

A N A G E - A P P R O P R I AT E EXPERIENCE

Because of our dedication to Progressive Programming, Camp Cody is divided into four small camper groups called divisions. Divisions participate in bonding and team-building activities (such as Color Wars) and sit together during our nightly all-camp assemblies. Because of the close-knit nature of these small groups, campers have the opportunity to build strong, meaningful relationships with their peers and their counselors. We believe that the friendships forged are an essential part of being at Camp Cody, making summer camp a rewarding, valuable and fun experience to be cherished for a lifetime.

T he C ody E xperience 1 7

Our Age Groups

Our campers participate in many divisional activities, but at the end of the day, our community gathers for a camp-wide activity that fosters the tight-knit spirit Cody is known for. Bear Hunt, Color Wars and all-camp basketball games keep campers engaged and having a good time.

AGES 7-9

AGES 10-11

Pioneers

Juniors

Pioneers are our youngest campers in the Cody family, and for most, it’s their first time at summer camp! To provide our Pios with the attention that first-time campers need, our counselor-to-camper ratio is higher than in the other divisions.

For some Juniors, it’s their first time away at camp, but they have everything they need to have a great summer at Cody: a cabin full of friends and counselors ready to have fun and embark on new, exciting adventures! THE JUNIOR LIFE

Pios enjoy high-energy activities in their schedules, such as swimming and Wibit, balanced with ample R&R.

Juniors have four electives every day. Our Juniors can choose from wakeboarding, field hockey and yoga to biking, kayaking and more.

FRIENDSHIP & COURAGE

KINDNESS & CONFIDENCE

The character “focus areas” at the forefront of the Pioneer experience are friendship and courage!

Juniors practice kindness and confidence, which aid in the positive development of social skills.

THE PIO WAY

AGES 12-13

AGES 14-15

Inters

Seniors

Inters are the second oldest division, and with that comes both freedom and responsibility. Inters may choose five electives and maintain their packed schedules themselves.

Seniors know the youngest divisions admire them — especially those who grew up in the younger divisions — and just like in high school, being a Senior is coveted.

THE INTER STYLE

THE SENIOR PERSPECTIVE

Inters also have more frequent and longer social events, later bedtimes, and special trips. Many Inters LOVE adventure, which is why we like to explore off-site.

One of the best things about being a Senior is choosing electives and creating an ideal daily schedule. Seniors have the most choice of any division. BELONGING & GRATITUDE

Inters have great integrity and promote helpfulness across camp, fostering a tight-knit community

Seniors help to foster a sense of belonging within the Cody community, practicing gratitude to promote an inclusive environment.

AGES 16-17

COUNSELORS IN TRAINING

Teen Leaders

CITs live in a cabin with other CITs, enabling them to work as a closely-knit team. They enjoy the light-hearted fun of being a camper and are exposed to the responsibilities of becoming a counselor, preparing them early on for leadership at Cody.

INTEGRITY & HELPFULNESS

Seniors may be our oldest camper division at Cody, but the Teen Leadership Program lies ahead of them. This program is comprised of 16-year-old Counselors-in-Training (CITs) and our 17-year-old Junior Counselors (JCs). BECOMING LEADERS

Our Teen Leaders enjoy camp life while learning about work ethic, helpfulness and responsibility. They collaborate with our counselors to offer the best experience to campers. While they’re training to become counselors, CITs and JCs are learning leadership, building confidence and practicing accountability.

JUNIOR COUNSELORS

JCs live in camper cabins, just as counselors do. They act as a counselor’s assistant, but in reality, they work as a team. They help campers stick to their schedules, lend a hand with chores and see to the well-being of their campers. JCs are trained to spot a camper who might be struggling and help ignite meaningful friendships between campers, making Cody a safe and happy environment.

Cody is a great place to develop new skills and practice current ones, so why not take the time to learn or practice an individual activity? The beauty of the individual activities offered at Cody is that many can be enjoyed for the rest of your life. Whether it’s tennis, golf, biking, archery or yoga, they don’t stop once camp ends. While these sports are individual, they’re still very social — so fellow campers can enjoy them together without being part of a formal team.

BRING CHILDHOOD OUTSIDE!

Cody is a technology-free camp. Devices with screens are not allowed because we want campers to bond with each other and excel in their activities. Our camp tradition is built upon shared experiences, and we find that screens distract campers from this connection. But learning is still in! At Cody, campers can be tutored in mathematics, reading and English as a Second Language (ESL). Our tutors are teachers with past tutoring experience and a passion for education. PROGRESSIVE ACADEMICS

Tutors start by examining a camper’s knowledge and skill-level to determine their academic strengths and weaknesses. With that, they design a comprehensive plan for the camper, enabling them to reach their goals while at Cody. Campers get one-on-one attention from tutors and share a classroom with fellow students. Campers are often given assignments that foster group work and collaborative teaching in addition to individual work, creating an open and cohesive learning community.

3 6 P rivate I nstruction

At Cody, we understand the importance of education inside the classroom — even when school is out.

— ESL

We offer math tutoring at all levels of proficiency. Campers take a math course suited to their individual needs — however, our instructors are skilled mathematicians and can tutor campers in any area of math they need or want to pursue. From fundamentals to geometry and algebra, campers can keep up the good work at Cody.

Our tutors will assist campers who have been assigned summer reading by their school. We incorporate writing into our reading program at Cody to give campers a well-rounded skill set in the English language and equip them with the tools for critical thinking and writing. Not only that, campers will develop a passion for the written word.

Learning a language is complex; there are accents to decode, idioms to understand and vocabulary to discover — which is why immersion at Camp Cody is so valuable! Here, we have a team of teachers who speak the languages of our campers so that ESL students can ask questions in their own language to learn English with ease.

RIDING DISCIPLINES

Campers have many disciplines (styles of riding) they can choose from. English/hunter jumper, western, gymkhana, cross country, vaulting, dressage or trail riding … There’s something for everyone! In our Equestrian Program, campers have the opportunity to explore the local woods on horseback, race through barrels, jump fences or perfect their piaffe. Our instructors are certified through the American Association of Horsemanship Safety (or an international equivalent) and are experienced in teaching children. Many of our instructors also hold certifications in their specified area of horseback riding, such as the Dressage Instructor’s certification through the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) or are certified through the American Riding Instructors Association.

RIDING SCHEDULE

Riding lessons are built into campers' schedules as an elective activity. Since our riding stable is located off-campus, those in the riding program will meet at the designated spot on campus to be driven to the equestrian center in our private Cody vans. In addition to riding, campers spend time at the stable learning to care for their horse and maintain their tack. Equestrians have semi-private lessons (two to three students) three times per session for one hour, as well as an additional half hour at the stable grooming, tacking up and spending time with their assigned horse. WHERE WE RIDE

Our program is located near camp on a picturesque 40 acres, with a stable housing 20 horses. The stable has multiple riding rings and miles of trails where riders can enjoy the peaceful nature that surrounds them. The stable is just a short five-minute hop from Cody, so transportation doesn’t take any longer than it does for those in other programs to walk to their activities!

In our Tennis Program, campers enhance their tennis skills with one-on-one coaching and in small groups, getting the best of both worlds! F R O M S TA R T T O F I N E S S E

Cody’s Head Tennis Instructor evaluates each camper’s skill level and builds upon those skills while encouraging a passion for the game of tennis. Campers who have never played before become familiar with the fundamentals, equipment and basic strokes, all while developing fitness, court movement and footwork. Campers learn the parts of the tennis court, rules and regulations for matches and racquet handling skills, including a strong forehand, backhand, volley and overhead serve — from start to finesse! ROCK THE COURT

As campers advance, they will improve their strokes with spins, topspins and slicing while developing approach shots and refining volleys and second serves. Rowing Club combines grace, skill and balance while giving campers a full physical workout on the beautiful Ossipee Lake here in New Hampshire.

Cody offers lessons in Sculling and Sweep Rowing. Sculling is rowing in a single or double shell with two oars. Sweep rowing takes place in a bigger shell (four to eight people) with one oar per person. Campers receive both land training and on-the-water instruction. Beginners learn the basics of rowing, including the necessary equipment, how to carry the boat and oars, the importance of maintaining equipment, proper technique while rowing and water safety issues. PERFECTING THE OAR

Camper will become adept through drills and ample experience on the water. Campers learn rigging to adjust the oars for their body, then perfect the forward stroke. They work on their catch, release, drive, recovery and good body posture. As campers advance, lessons concentrate on balance, technical skill and physical conditioning.

Our golf lessons let campers explore the game in a safe, secure and nurturing environment at Indian Mound Golf Club, a beautiful course just minutes from camp. Instructors evaluate each campers’ level of play by observing their grip, stance, posture, full swing and ability to putt and chip, as well as their perception of the course. Campers are placed in groups based on skill level. GET INTO THE GAME

Beginners are introduced to the basics of golf as well as etiquette, rules, pre-shot routines, scoring and club selection. Intermediate golfers work on improving their swing mechanics and short game — such as how to save strokes by playing off the cart path, pine straw, mulch and side-hill lies. As campers advance, instructors add driving techniques with all woods. MORE THAN JUST A SPORT

While on the course, instructors also discuss handling bunkers, deep rough, over-the-water shots and other specialized shots, while teaching campers to manage their way around the golf course to avoid problems and set up opportunities for better scoring. Campers will learn how the professionals achieve low scores through creativity, strategy and playing the percentage shots around the greens. Campers are always encouraged to internalize their progress and make connections, as well as develop confidence in what they are doing.

Even from a distance, you can hear the Dining Hall roar with laughter during breakfast, lunch and dinnertime. Campers eat family-style with their bunkmates and counselors at every meal and enjoy a large selection of yummy foods that will satisfy even the pickiest campers.

When accidents happen, campers have highlyskilled medical staff to aid them. Our registered nurses live on-site and are always available at a moment’s notice. We also have an on-call doctor who may visit at any time.

MODERN FACILITIES

We source a number of organic ingredients (including beef, chicken, and pork), dairy, eggs and produce from local farmers as often as possible. This way, we support our local community and we are healthier too!

Our newly-built, modern Health Center has all of the latest medical equipment and tools to care for campers who are not feeling 100%. In the unlikely event of a medical emergency, campers will be transported to the Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, just 15 minutes away.

ENDLESS OPTIONS

TICKS, LICE, OH MY!

In addition to the main meals, there is a pastry bar, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals and granola at breakfast. Hungry campers can enjoy healthy snacks, beverages and even some treats around the clock!

We are diligent about tick-checking every night for campers and staff. Should campers find a tick, it will be promptly removed by our nursing staff in the Health Center.

ORGANIC, FRESH & LOCAL

We are cautious about the foods we provide and do not offer any common food allergens. Our campus is nut-free and our chef offers fantastic alternatives and a wide array of options for all.

Likewise, untreated lice can quickly become a camp-wide problem during the summer. For everyone’s comfort, we have a strict lice policy: all staff and campers are checked for lice on Opening Day. Should lice or nits be found on a camper, he or she will be professionally treated at camp.

Happy Parents

Sending a child to camp is an act of great trust by parents. Hear from a few families that keep coming back to Cody!

Camp Cody was our nine-year-old son’s first “away” camp. From our initial meeting with the Assistant Director right through the day we picked him up, it was by far the best thing we have been able to do for our son.

My son attended his first session at Camp Cody in 2016. He was excited from the time he learned he was going until the very last day at camp. The atmosphere of genuine caring by the staff is what impressed me most about Camp Cody. I knew from the initial interview between my son and the Program Director that we chose the right camp.

Having spent eight years in the Marine Corps, I have high expectations. Camp Cody did not let me down. The staff members — from senior leaders right down to junior counselors--were some of the most impressive and dedicated I have ever dealt with. They have mastered a great mix of having fun and being able to direct campers where they need to be in a proficient manner.

Camp Cody embraces what the camper wants to take away from the camp experience, and that was important to me as a parent. Never did I feel that my son would be in activities that he wouldn’t enjoy and I was happy that the camp would allow him a chance to experience new things that would challenge his comfort zone. Here, campers spread their wings away from the routines of their daily lives.

Camp Cody is truly a gem. The staff members are so friendly and caring. One of my daughters was quite homesick the first night of her first summer. Her counselor stayed with her and comforted her throughout the night. By the next day, she told us how much she loved camp and how helpful her counselor was. This summer (2016) my other daughter completed her CIT experience. This provided her with new responsibilities that gave her confidence and a feeling of community which Camp Cody inspires. Every fall in our family, the countdown to returning to Camp Cody begins!

I should include a mention of the food choices: my son gave two thumbs up to the menus! Also, the physical state of the camp is beautiful and well-maintained.

Camp Cody really puts campers first, making sure every single child lives their experience to the max … They make your children feel welcomed, just like it is their home. Summer of 2015 was my girls’ best ever and they look forward to many more years to come!

THE STAFF EXPERIENCE

People of Cody

Outstanding staff are what make the Cody Community special: life-long educators, coaches, & role models.

Archery Instructor

Junior Girls Counselor

Summer of 2016 was my 8th year attending this wonderful camp, and it has only gotten better through the years. I now instruct Archery, thanks to the guidance and teachings of many counselors who have attended this camp over the past few years.

Not only have I physically grown up at Cody, but I have also gained so many skills in leadership, responsibility, team work, communication, independence, time management and more through Cody’s CIT & JC program. These programs really gave me a chance to be myself and not be afraid to fail because I had such an amazing team to fall back on.

The best part of Cody is the constant aim to improve itself. Just this year, three new activities and nine new cabins have been added. But with all of these changes and improvements, Camp Cody has never lost its original goal to ensure that campers experience the best summers of their lives. I am proud to have been a camper, CIT, JC and now finally a counselor at this camp. I couldn’t find a better way to spend my summers than right here on Ossipee Lake.

Camp Cody is a great place for children to spend a summer. I have never seen a group of young adults so committed to working with children and helping them learn and achieve goals. While the people at Camp Cody make it a truly special place, the location makes every day a little more magical. Lake Ossipee allows for a great array of water activities and a beautiful backdrop for activities based on land. For good fun, great food and good friends, Cody is the place to go.

During my time at Cody, I have made some of the longest lasting, most meaningful friendships. The two girls who were in my cabin my first year as a camper are now my best friends and counselors by my side and it has been amazing to be able to grow up with each other and celebrate each others’ accomplishments. Cody is my happy place; my sanctuary from my busy life. Here, camp truly feels like home. See you next summer!
