Family & Friendships

My parents decided to bring me to their special place, where they visited growing up. It was Coney Island. Mom told me that she remembered Grandpa and Grandma bringing her there along with my uncles, and they had such a great time. I remember seeing a big Ferris wheel from the window of my parents’ car as we drove. I started to feel as if I was already on the ride. My stomach had butterflies and my head started to hurt, after all that overthinking about the rides. As we walked closer and closer, I could hear the popcorn popping, and the smell of pizza and funnel cake was so intoxicating. I could hear the loud screams of people on the roller coaster when it dropped, but I could also hear the laughter of people playing go fish. I saw little kids, families, couples, and friends all hanging out together. There were so many rides and I wanted to get on all of them!

As I walked in, I saw the first ride I wanted to get on, which was the Tickler. I wanted to get on it all by myself, but the ride was so big, and I could not get on unless there was an adult. Since the cart held five people, I asked my parents, sister, and uncle to get on with me. We sat in a red cart that spins you around and around while it moves up and down. It was my first time on the ride, and they told me, “Just close your eyes and hold your breath.” So, I closed my eyes. I could hear the tracks slowing as we were about to go down. I could hear the rest of my family cheering me on, and I squeezed my mom’s hand. I accidentally opened my eyes when it hit the top. I knew I messed up at that point, and then it dropped. I felt as if I was about to die. I tried to scream, but nothing came out because I was so scared. My heart was beating so fast I couldn’t breathe. It was going so fast and moving up, down, sideways, and any way you can possibly think of. The air was pushing against my face. I was so scared, yet I couldn’t stop laughing. I felt as light as a feather as it dropped, but then it felt like a hundred pounds were laid on me because of the weight pulling me down. As we slowed down and came to a stop, my hair looked as if it got electrocuted. My legs were shaking and I couldn’t walk properly. I had so much fun, Hope Is a Lion | La esparanza es un león

screaming and laughing at the same time. I liked the excitement and how fast my heartbeat raced. So, I went on a couple of more times. I felt more confident every time I went back on. As I was walking away from the ride, I was thinking it really wasn’t that bad.

I went on other rides like Lynn’s Trapeze, the carousel, and the Hand Glider, but the most memorable moment was when my mom shared her special ride with me: the Ferris wheel, also known as The Wonder Wheel. It was so big and tall that you could see the entire park as you reached the top. I saw the whole beach, and the sun was so bright I had to squint to see. It was a little scary because the cart slowly rocked back and forth, but the view was worth it. She squeezed my hand when she felt it rock a little more than usual. You could see the never-ending shoreline and everyone looked like ants.

We spent the rest of the day getting on rides, eating, and walking the boardwalk. Maybe next time I can try the iconic roller coaster known as the Cyclone. Its tracks are still made out of wood!

Mis padres decidieron llevarme a su lugar especial, donde visitaron cuando era niños. Era Coney Island. Mi mama me dijo que se acordaba que Abuelo y Abuela la traían aquí con mis tíos, y que siempre la pasaban bien. Me acuerdo ver una gran rueda de la fortuna desde la ventana del carro mientras manejamos. Sentía como si ya estuviera en la rueda. Sentía mariposas en el estomago y me empezó a doler la cabeza, después de pensar tanto en los juegos.

Mientras nos acercabamos, escuche la canchita estallar, y los olores de pizza y pastel de embudo eran intoxicantes. Escuchaba los gritos de la gente en las montañas rusas mientras caían, pero también la risa de la gente mientras jugaban a pescar. Vi niños, familias, parejas, y amigos juntándose. ¡Habían tantos juegos y quería subirme a todos!

Mientras entraba, vi al primer juego al que me quería subir, y era el Tickler. Quería subirme sola, pero el juego era tan grande, que no me podía subir al menos que vaya con un adulto. Como en el carrito entraban cinco, les pregunté a mis papás, hermana, y tío que se subieran conmigo. Nos sentamos en un carrito rojo que te gira y gira mientras te mueve de arriba a abajo. Como era mi primera vez en el juego, me dijeron, “Solo cierra los ojos y aguanta la respiración.” Así que, cerré los ojos. Escuché la ruedas del carrito bajar la velocidad antes que bajaramos. Escuché al resto de mi familia alentandome, y apreté la mano de mi mamá. De casualidad abrí los ojos mientras estábamos en la cima. Sabía que me había equivocado, y luego caímos. Sentí que me iba a morir. Traté de gritar, pero nada salió porque tenía tanto miedo. Mi corazón latía muy rápido que no podía respirar. Iba tan de prisa y subiendo, bajando, yendo de costado, y de cualquier sentido que pudieras imaginar. El aire empujaba mi cara. Tenía tanto miedo, pero aun así no podía dejar de reirme. Me sentí ligera como una pluma cuando cae, pero luego sentí como cien libras encima mio por el peso que me jalaba. Mientras bajábamos de velocidad y páramos, mi pelo parecía que me habian electrocutado. Mis piernas temblaban y no podía caminar bien. Me diverti tanto, gritando y riendo a la vez. gusto la emoción y lo rápido que latía mi corazón. Así que me subí un par de veces más. Me sentí cada vez más confiada cuando me subia.

Mientras me alejaba de juego, pensé que no fue nada mal.

Me subí a otros juegos como Lynn’s Trapeze, el carrusel, y el Hand Glider, pero el momento más memorable fue cuando mi mamá compartió su juego favorito: La Rueda de la Fortuna. Era tan grande y alto que podías ver todo el parque mientras estabas en la cima. Vi toda la playa, y el sol era tan brillante que tenía que entrecerrar los ojos para ver. Daba un poco de miedo porque el carrito se movía un poco, pero la vista valía la pena. Ella me apretó la mano cuando el carrito se movia mas de lo norma. Se podía ver la orilla sin fin y todos parecían hormigas.

Pasamos el resto del dia subiendonos a juegos, comiendo, y paseando.

Tal vez la próxima vez pueda subirme a la montaña rusa más famosa que se llama el Cyclone. ¡Sus carriles todavía están hechos de madera!

Shake It Off

“Shake It Off” makes me feel shaky and wiggly. It reminds me of dance class, when we do our warm-up. There is a lot of shaking involved.

“Old Town Road” makes me feel excited and happy. It reminds me of a summer day at the beach.

Dear “Shake It Off”, You make me feel cheerful and you brighten up my day. You make me taste cookies in my mouth. You make me feel like I am at the park. You make me think of my dance teacher.

Ok, I figured out this is an alien spaceship. They keep weird animals and have taken my brother. Great! Why ARE we here anyway? Testing?

Enslaving? Wait… What is that? It looks like metal but it is somehow fusing with each other. And what is that pack of glob there?

This, my friend, is the one thing that started it all. The one thing I have to destroy, for the universe to live. This… is Project G-66.

Eso, mi amigo, es lo que empezó todo. La única cosa que tengo que destruir para que el universo viva. Esto… es el Proyecto G-66.

10 Steps to Being Teacher’s Pet A Class Collaboration, ages 9-12 Laugh Out Loud!

1. Look at the smart kid’s answer, and call out their answer first.

2. Begin all your questions with “ruff” or “meow.”

3. Sniff everybody in the halls to make sure they’re doing the right thing.

4. Frame your classmates, so you look like the nicest kid.

5. Take Valentine’s from the best art student, and give the best one to your teacher.

6. Crawl around the school on all fours.

7. Give your teacher a kiss by licking their face.

8. Place your lunch on the floor, and eat it with just your mouth.

9. Wag your tail.

10. Do your classmates a favor and eat their homework.

21 Ways to Pretend You’re Not In Quarantine A Class Collaboration, ages 9-12 Listopia!

1. Go into a Zoom meeting, and put up a virtual background. People will think you’re at the beach!

2. Paint your walls to make it look like you’re outside.

3. Tech geek? Project virtual backgrounds onto your walls.

4. Take your pet kangaroo on a walk.

5. Do TOO much school work.

6. Go outside and build a giant house (make sure it’s bigger than your normal house).

7. Sunbathe on your fire escape.

8. Pretend you’re in the wild! Put up a tent inside of your house, add trees too. But, not too big. Those are for your huge next-door house.

9. Flood your house and pretend you’re swimming in a lake. Don’t flood your huge house next door, though.

10. Watch old sports games and act like they’re live.

11. Buy a waterfall (for your smaller house) and create an indoor rainy day.

12. Build five to six androids that can play heavy metal music.

13. Flood your big house, buy a tide machine, and create a tide pool.

14. Buy a bunch of legos and recreate LEGOLAND. 15. Build a restaurant.

16. Get a moving walkway that changes directions as you walk. Buy seven to eight androids, and make them walk on it.

17. Make a gym in your large house.

18. Seems like both your houses are getting full. So, you should build a third house!

19. Fill it with stuffed animals.

20. Build anti-gravity slides to connect the three houses.

21. Go to your roof and scream at the top of your lungs until quarantine is over.

I called my mom and I heard a creepy voice say, “She’s not home.”

“Who are you?” No reply.

“Mom!” I called, “Where are you?” Then, my eyes snapped open, and I could smell the pancakes cooking. “Just a dream.”

The next day, I heard the voice say, “She’s not home.”

Again, I asked, “Who are you?” and still got no reply. I went downstairs, but my mom was not there, just blood on the floor.

“Mom!” I called over and over. I was so sad, “What if they come for me?” I ran for the phone, called the police, and told them everything.

When I got a reply, it was from the creepy voice, “You’re next.”

The voice sent me running. I ran to the living room to get my dad, but then I remembered he was found dead, on the bed next to a bloody knife, a week before my mom died.

“Maybe the voice is the one killing them,” I said out loud, for some reason. Then, I heard the voice say, “That’s right,” and everything went black.

And, to be honest, at first it didn’t really occur to me, that in a decade from now, my experience will be a DBQ question on the Global Regents And, they’ll have to write an essay about what they read And luckily, I can keep my pen to myself cause I’ve already seen it.

And some days, I go to sleep, wake up and feel like I’m dreaming I’ve become numb to pandemics, wars, and disasters happening abroad I took my life for granted Forgot how much of a privilege it was to live in America To wake up everyday and have an outside to go to.

The privilege of breathing in air, fresh enough to keep you alive.

Parks have become the staple for adolescents in the community to play And no one ever questioned the park cause it was always there.

School was always there Food was always there We almost always had it good in comparison.

Now that I think about it, it’s really embarrassing We were safe in this bubble But today, we‘re not.

Today, we realize that we are no better than any other country We are no better than any other citizen The virus is coming for the rich and the poor For the hospitals and grocery stores And years from now, children will read about this moment and wonder what it was like for us For the people who lived through a widespread pandemic The pandemic that made the city that never sleeps, Sleep.

Ain’t it funny how we were told that we rely way too much on technology?

Now, technology has become the only thing we can rely on.

Having to code switch between our friends and our professors We slide from Zoom to Zoom like a python Hearts shatter in millions of seniors who will not get to commence Not get to walk down that aisle and get the honorary paper that will let them know their years meant something Them late nights in the library meant something Them student loans meant something Cause in all of this we’ve seemed to have forgotten something that I am hoping is written in them history books.

Before anything else, we are human.

And as scary as this virus is, it knows what it’s doing Reminding us that inside, we are all the same.

We all deserve this thing called life, and if we take it for granted It can be stripped away any second Cause life works in circles.

I guess that’s the roundabout way of saying: one day, we will all be gone.

Some of us fortunate enough to be more than just a statistic in a history book The most famous of us will have a street or a school named in our honor But the most Important won’t be the ones who made billions and prospered It will be the ones who lived everyday with love, It will be the ones who lent the helping hand to those who needed it the most It would be the heroes who didn’t wear capes It will be the ones who went the extra step to save humanity It will be the ones who were asked, “How does it feel to know that you are living in a moment of history?”

Peaceful Island

There we are, on a peaceful island, with beautiful trees that give the whole island life. The houses are way different from New York, because New York has tall buildings full of apartments, while this place is like royalty with different houses on the block. Ocean waves greeting you as you stumble your way up to your villa. Fresh air greets your nose as you find your way to a beautiful spacious place making you feel like you’re in a palace. When you look out the window, trees flourishing with their own swag. The ocean waving its hellos as it accommodates you with a little ocean talent show. The changing color of the skies makes you feel at home and welcomed to Bali.

There goes Maya, getting ready with the morning sunshine. Ready to go out and explore the world she has landed to. She first goes to the beachwalk shopping centre because it has different clothes that are expensive and would make her look royal. And different malls next to each other with beautiful restaurants, their aromas floating around the area as she walks. It is also surrounded by the whole acre of trees, bringing the whole mall to life and is enjoyable to be around. Another place she went is the Ujung Water Palace.

When she reached it, she was amazed. The building was between a volcano and the sea, surrounded by beautiful flowers and bridges, with classy sculptures that make you feel connected to the place. She could hear different calls of nature wanting to reach out to her as if they were long gone spirits. She was amazed as the wind began to circle in motion, covering her with a strong breeze that made her feel she was in a tornado. When she finally left, she came upon a restaurant named The Bridges. When She walked in, the aroma flooded her nose, blocking her sense of smell. She was blown away that she had got a seat by the ocean. And once again, the ocean wasn’t dispassionate and it put on a show for her as she waited for her food. People dressed in silky clothes bowed to her while they served her meal. Their smiles constantly filled the room with laughter and that made her feel more Hope Is a Lion | La esparanza es un león

at home and welcomed. She tried the Chevre Beetroot Brulee. As the piece of food entered the hall of her mouth, she could feel the slimy caramel that melted inside her mouth and made her taste bud tremble.

She was excited to wash the food as she purchased a cool cocktail that she knew, while making the food in her stomach settle.

As she was walking back to her villa, she stopped and stared at the gazing eyes that made Maya a little sleepy. She decided to sit outside her villa and stare into the sky that made her eyes gaze like shooting stars. She was lying on the steps of her villa when she started to feel homesick. She didn’t know whether it was the food she ate or if it was an actual emotion that she couldn’t come across. But, she had realized it was an emotional homesickness. Being away to a place where it was peaceful and relaxing felt good to her, but that made her miss the loud cars that honked past her apartment and her neighbours who greeted her every morning before going home.

She waved at the ocean hoping to get a response from it, as she felt a connection towards it. The ocean signaled her a short wave, and to Maya, that meant the ocean was telling her she will adapt very quickly. She felt better, and she decided to go to her villa and lay her head down, and think of the amazing sites she had seen today. Maya stormed off in her dreams not knowing that she had fallen asleep while crying.

She woke up and went to her curtains, and opened them up as the bright sunlight made a way to her room. She stretched her arms out tirelessly, ready to start a new day.

Allá estábamos, en una isla pacífica, con árboles hermosos que dan vida a la isla entera. Las casas son súper diferentes de las en Nueva York, porque Nueva York tiene edificios altos llenos de apartamentos, mientras este lugar es como realeza, con casas diferentes en cada cuadra. Las olas del océano te saludan mientras subes a tu villa. El aire fresco saluda tu nariz mientras encuentras una vía a un lugar hermoso y amplio, que te hace sentir como si estuvieras en un palacio. Cuando miras por la ventana, árboles florecen con su propia onda. El océano te saludo mientras te invita a un espectáculo de talento. Los colores del cielo cambiando te hacen sentir en casa y bienvenida a Bali.

Ahí va Maya, ordenándose con el sol de la mañana. Lista para salir y explorar el mundo donde se ha encontrado. Primero, ella va al centro comercial de la playa porque tiene ropa diferente que es cara y la hará parecer real. The Old Cherry Tree

The most beautiful thing I can see right now is the old cherry tree in our backyard. Although not blossoming right now, it is tall and sturdy with big teardrop leaves pointing down as if reaching for the ground. As I look up at it, I can see my birdhouse—the one I made when I was little.

My Love That’s Burning

I wake up to the tense heat burning me, the sweat dripping down my body I get up to see myself in a burning mansion on fire I sit, watching the place burn limb to limb, ash to ash, I sit patiently on a staircase watching everything fall down with me in it.

From the outside, all you see is smoke and light which the fire brings, but inside fire flames become bigger, sparks from it fly around the air, flames become bigger second by second, I get up and walk around to see everything or what’s left of it.

I walk and walk remembering all memories of me and my love pictures into ashes, clothes burnt, I cry, walking, leaving every memory behind, I cry thinking if things could be different, I cry blaming myself.

I walk out that mansion, firefighters run in, pushing, trying to see anyone in there and trying to stop the fire.

I look back telling myself it’s for the best When really, I only said this so I wouldn’t be hurt people run to see what happened, they see me, my clothes burned, my mascara messy, holding the key and me and my love pictures.

I black the world out longing for him, everything was live, he should have seen I guess he didn’t care, he didn’t love me the way I love him, time to start a new life without my love.

But soon, the parents will realize that the kids are learning even more, and then they’ll like it. The school will have classes in video game designing and cooking.

There will also be rooms with resources, like books and computers so that kids can teach themselves. Since the school is a gaming school, the outside will have a lot of colors and pictures of gaming. There’ll be a big room for gaming with big comfortable chairs for us to sit in.

The school will have a zoo in it, with little animals, like small ducks and ponies. The zoo will have a tiny section that has lady bugs, spiders, and ants. Pictures of animals will also be in the school.

Our block will have robot restaurants where robots will clean up and cook the food. The robots can make any food you want, even donuts with ketchup.

Pero, pronto, los padres se darán cuenta de que los niños están aprendiendo aun más, así que la van a gustar. La escuela tendrá clases de diseño de videojuegos y cocinar en la escuela. También habrá cuartos con recursos como libros y computadoras para que los niños puedan enseñarse a sí mismos. Ya que la escuela es una escuela de videojuegos, las paredes afuera tendrán muchísimos colores y imágenes de juegos. Habrá un cuarto grande para videojuegos con sillones grandes y cómodos donde vamos a sentarnos. La escuela tendrá un zoológico con animalitos como patos pequeños y caballitos.

El zoológico tendrá una sección chiquita donde habrá mariquitas, arañas y hormigas. Fotos de animales también estarán en la escuela.

Nuestra cuadra tendrá restaurantes con robots donde los robots limpian y cocinan la comida. Los robots pueden cocinar toda la comida que quieras, hasta donas con ketchup.

It killed thousands of people, but it suddenly stopped. Who knows how? I have six siblings: Blue, Karen, Emma, Jazmine, Hailary, Payton, and me. We are septuplets. We all use the name: Hazel Ozborn. Our dad made watches for us. All people have them. It shows if we are a single child or if we have siblings. Our dad activated them to say that we are an only child. We all look alike, so it is easy. I just hope we never get caught.

My Imagination

My favorite place is my imagination, because it’s where I go to escape from the world around me. In my imagination, I am on a beach that is always surrounded by a beautiful sunset. The ocean is as clear as a crystal ball, and as blue as the sky on a summer day. The sand is as white and soft as a blanket. The palm trees on the beach have the most calming sound when they are swayed by the summer breeze. The beach is always relaxing and free of violence and danger. It smells of fresh ocean breeze and of tropical plants. It is almost “perfect.”

But, there are times when even my imagination can’t help the stress of the outside disappear, and sometimes it ends up making my dream place a nightmare. Instead of the relaxing sunset on nice calm water, there’s just a plain night sky as dark as the pupils in a person’s eyes, with no stars, just plain darkness. There are all these loud distractions about my parents and their problems that, instead of calming me down, add more commotion in my brain. And the noises make it hard to feel safe in this place. It made me realize that I couldn’t escape my problems in the real world, even if I tried.

Mi sitio favorito es mi imaginación, porque es donde voy para escaparme del mundo alrededor de mí. En mi imaginación, estoy en una playa que siempre está rodeada de un bonito atardecer. El océano es transparente como una bola de cristal, y tan azul como el cielo de un día de verano. La arena es tan blanca y suave como una manta.

Las palmeras en la playa tienen el sonido más calmante cuando se mecen con la brisa de verano. La playa siempre es relajante y libre de violencia y peligro. Huele a fresca brisa del mar y plantas tropicales.

Casi es “perfecta.”

Pero, hay veces que mi imaginación no puede ayudar a hacer desaparecer el estrés de fuera, y algunas veces acaba haciendo que mi sueño sea una pesadilla. En lugar del atardecer relajante en agua buena y calmante, hay solo un cielo nocturno corriente tan oscuro como las pupilas en los ojos de una persona, sin estrellas, solo una oscuridad corriente. Hay todas estas distracciones ruidosas sobre mis padres y sus problemas que, en vez de calmarme, añaden más conmoción en mi cerebro. Y los ruidos hacen difícil sentirse segura en este lugar. Me hizo darme cuenta de que no puedo escapar mis problemas en el mundo real, incluso si lo intentara.

Our Block of the Future

Our block of the future is a place of opportunity, where mansions cost $1 and bikes cost $0.01. The school on the block has classes in Drama (with stuffed animals), Edible Art Class, Chemistry, Skittles Math, Ice Cream Making, Fried Chicken Making, and Baking. The school is called Pet School because the school has pets that kids can get for free, like dogs and puppies, kitties, goldfish, and cat goldfish.

Our block offers vaccines in the form of lollipops to keep everyone safe from COVID-19. There are race cars parked on the block that anybody can drive. Everyone likes our block because there is something for everybody.

Our Block of the Future

Our block leads to creativity because you can create any kind of mask you want. It is a safe block to be on, because you can buy or make masks, and because the restaurants are spread out.

On our block of the future, there is a school named The M.A.V. School.

It has classes in art, music, science, yoga, gym, and chemistry, and there is an electronic station called “The Laboratory.” There is nap time called “Sleepy Cloud.” There is also “Choice Time” and “Play Time”.

The Pastel Wonder Park has an outdoor space, games, a zoo, and a pool. The entrance is beautiful.

May 1, 2025 It is May 1st, 2025. Everything is different. Yes, we’re surprisingly alive.

We’ve all survived. The air is gray and the sky is a dirty brown-black color. The factories are working harder. The labs are coming up with many things: medication and cures for all the bad things, like sadness, disease, and madness. Now, scientists have cut down trees, taken away water, and killed off the bees. The flowers are dead. The future is sad and dangerous. There are no more presidents or governments. The people have overthrown them. There’s no grass. Dry dirt has replaced it with tall buildings that cover every corner. There is no more gender. We are just humans trying to survive this dry, barren wasteland. Pollution and global warming have melted the icebergs. The animals are dying.

The scientists are making “people,” people who are being born from a lab. The government says the “people born from a lab” will soon overpopulate and take over, when humans finish. The people born from a lab are normal people taken from their homes, programmed to obey every order they are forced to do. We’re gonna be okay.

A los laboratorios se les ocurren muchas cosas: medicación y curas para todas las cosas malas, como la tristeza, la enfermedad, y la locura. Ahora, los científicos han cortado árboles, han quitado el agua, y matado a las abejas. Las flores están muertas. El futuro es triste y peligroso. No hay más presidentes o gobiernos. Las personas los han derrocado.

No hay césped. La suciedad seca ha remplazado los edificios altos que cubren cada esquina. No hay más género. Solo somos humanos intentando sobrevivir en este yermo seco, árido. La contaminación y el calentamiento global han derretido los icebergs. Los animales están muriendo. Los científicos están creando “personas,” personas que están naciendo en un lab. El gobierno dice que la “personas nacidas en un lab” pronto van a sobrepoblar y tomar control, cuando los humanos acaben. Las personas nacidas en un lab son personas normales sacadas de sus casas, programadas a obedecer a cada orden a la cual están forzadas. Nosotros vamos a estar bien.

The sight Pasta saw is too unbearable to even imagine. Banana (her arch nemesis) has put up a sign saying, “New Menu! Much Better Than Across the Street!” She stormed into My Food Will Make You Go Bananas and pushed her way to Banana.

“You copycat! I had the idea first!” she screamed at him.

“It is a free country, darling,” Banana said smugly. Pasta stormed out of the restaurant with smoke coming out of her ears.

La vista que vi era demasiado insoportable de imaginar. Plátano (Su archinémesis) ha colgado un cartel diciendo, “¡Nuevo Menú! ¡Mucho Mejor que El del Otro Lado de la Calle!” Ella irrumpí en Mi Comida Te Hará Volver Loco y empujé hasta llegar a Plátano. “¡Tú imitador! ¡Yo tuve la idea antes!” ella le grité.

“Es un país libre, tesoro,” Plátano dijo con suficiencia. Ella salí enfadada del restaurante con humo saliendo de sus orejas.
