The Bone Thief

The Bone Thiefby Maggie Kaye, age 9

Copyright 2022 by Maggie Once upon a time, there was a poor 30-year old who lived in England. Her only companion was a dog. She could barely afford to pay her bills, and she had two meals a day: breakfast and dinner, both of which consisted of raw cabbage. She could barely afford dog food. Her name was Josephina Hubbard, and some people called her mother Hubbard. One day, her dog started barking. So she went to the cupboard to get her dog, Scottie, a bone. But the cupboard was bare! She was shocked. She remembered very vividly that she had placed a few bones in the cupboard earlier. She knew there was a walking fish, though, that lived nearby, that loved bones, so she went to investigate. “Red Herringfish, you stole my bones!” “N—no, I didn’t!” he sputtered. “Please believe me! I—I swear!”“Hmm,” said Ms. Hubbard. “Swear, do you? Still not sure if I should trust you . . .”Then she heard some barking noises. She left the fish immediately. She ended up in front of Scottie. He was barking at another dog that was scarfing down Ms. Hubbard’s lost bones. “Hey!” she yelled at the dog’s owners. “I saved up for those for three months!”“We’re sorry, miss!” said the owner. “Accept our offer of a million bucks?” So Ms. Hubbard moved into a big house, had kids, and had a nice life.
