Left Behind

Left Behind by Ava Samuels, age 10

My school was always a safe place, or so I thought. You know that place that’s not home, but in a way it is. So as I was saying, one day, a cloudy misty day stuck to each of the windows like it was hugging them. And even with the windows shut tight, the howl of the wind felt like it was drumming into my ears. As the day slowly crept forward, the mist almost seemed to seep through the windows. Soon the air felt heavy and thick and it stung my skin. Then, it happened with a wide eyed scream! I saw Cooper, shivering as the mist covered him like a thick blanket. Soon, all of them were blanketed in mist, stumbling around. But the mist seemed to seep into them. The first few people had already turned blank-eyed like dead corpses. “What? What’s happening?” I called. The mist only stung me but it really hurt everyone else. They looked like they were looking for something or someone. Me. I stumbled out of the classroom feeling dizzy and sick. I ran down the steps too scared to look behind when I finally busted out of the school. I was covered in sweat. I ran and ran without stopping for anything. I needed to run to get away. Finally I stopped in a crowded, small crack in between 2 buildings. The mist slowly floated over me. I shivered as the mist fell lower and lower until it was 10 feet away. Then, still hovering, it formed into a person– misty, but still there.“Why hello,” he said in a tone one might use to say “good morning.”

“Who, what are you?” I gasped. “Oh me. Why, you don’t need to know. But first I must explain,” he said, waving his hands around.

“What.” I whispered.
