Write Your Own Monument Proposal

About the Program

This book contains writing from 826michigan’s New Monuments virtual field trip program. During this program, students explore what a monument is and can be, dreaming up new possibilities for local ways to honor heroes and specialties, from the playful (coney dogs and magical creatures) to the serious (activists and abolitionists). In collaboration with 826michigan volunteers, students envision and draw these new possibilities, and then write about why they think their new monuments should be built. This project is based on the work by student writers at our sister chapter 826 New Orleans and their publication Courageous, Eccentric, Diverse: New Monuments for New Orleans.

A monument to Families & Teachers

Group 1

Families and teachers deserve a monument for many reasons. They’re special because they’re nice. They give us stuff. They love us. They make us happy. They’re responsible and respectful. At home with our families, we can be comfortable, be happy, and have fun. Sometimes, we play video games and go outside. Teachers help us learn. When we’re at school, we feel happy. It’s fun. Sometimes, we feel stressed or bored. When we feel stressed, sometimes we want to throw a desk, but our teachers can help when we feel that way. They’re our heroes.

Group 2

She teaches us math. She takes care of us when we need help. Also she is always lovely, kind, and she makes sure you feel better when you are sad. Our monument to Ms. Bruzzano will be a statue of her made out of clay. She could be standing with a thumbs up with one hand and a peace sign with the other. It will be right by the school or on top of the school. In front of the school where everyone can see it.

We could add everyone’s name on the roof so people could know who has gone to the school. So people know who she has helped. Group 3

Pets, dogs, cats, grandmothers, mothers, brothers, sisters, babies, cousins, aunties, and me! All of us matter. Families love us. They care about us. They take care of us. Because they matter to us, we should make a monument to our family. Our monument could be made from a chalkboard. We will write “we love our families.” We will draw all of us on the chalkboard. Our families are the best. When people see our monument, they will be happy. They will think it is nice. They will feel great. The monument will inspire people to be kind.
