Chapter One: Fall 7

Oscillation GFT (Ghost Face Tapia)

Eyes close, soporific effect, images looping in my head, the course replaying itself haunting my dream.

Feeling tired.

Sweat clinging onto my skin, No way to build the aplomb to run or push my body Warming up, feeling weary, need to defecate, the heat is bugging Lining up, looking forward, intimidated by the hills, slowly entering the abyss.

Staying still, legs tingling, waiting in complete silence, Until you hear “On your marks, get set” BAM! The starter pistol goes off.

Feelings of tiredness, anxiousness, and the fear of how this race might unfold suddenly fades to white.

My lungs are tight, air is humid, the three mile war has begun.

Running through a mile of hills, Sensations filling your body, Screaming stop, stop, stop But my mind and pride fighting against those internal noises Keeping me from falling Approaching the second mile mark Releasing a noise of relief Then realizing you still have to two massive hills to climb

Erkhes Zoljargal Fire is a combustion effect that happens when there is a high-temperature chemical reaction. Which also represents “Life.” If the fire is not tended to it eventually burns out, however if one nurtures the flame and attends to it constantly, fire burns brighter than the sun.

This simple but dangerous process demonstrates the action’s consistency. If one never attends to himself, he shall be nothing but ashes.

Consistency can be found getting used on every modern social media platform like how flu thrives in the winter. It became famous without the right path, specifically I was affected by it because influencers would say it’s discipline but in my eyes it was just motivation, and eventually I would burn out without any more fuel to keep on sticking to the activity I’m involved with. It was when I discovered what my mom’s been working on when I truly realized the right path of the term. The thought of being able to live in the USA was a mere dream for me ever since I was able to grasp the adult world. I used to talk to my mom after her day. She would sit me on her lap and we would be on an imaginary airline and fly through the streets of Los Angeles looking at the houses like they were made out of legos, and the skyscrapers that we would sit on and stare off into the dream world.

As time passed the imaginary airline was out of order, and the night talks were barely a thing. But I wasn’t aware of the fact my mother was dedicating 14 years of her life to get a residency for the USA. And I only discovered the truth in 2022 when she announced the news that she had been approved for a green card. I had never felt such a rain of emotion pour onto me. I was sad, excited, emotional, and relieved. Everything just piled on my head for a moment. I became like a zombie with nothing in my head, however one with the biggest smile on my face.

That turning of events has led me to the state I’m in right now. In the span of three years I have gone through a change I had never

imagined a week before the news. I was given an ability to change myself, the imaginary plane became a real one: literally it was Korean Air, the airline that brought me to the states. It wasn’t fun to change my life 180 degrees all of a sudden, nor was the bus drive to my grandmother’s place with eight suitcases. The weird stares my mom, brother and grandmother got from other people still haunt me to this day, but now that I reminisce, it was like a warning to be prepared for the future because now you’re in the foreign world without anybody but your mother, brother and grandmother to support you.

In this present time, the pebbles I’ve gone through were just like a splash of water on my shirt, and the change I’ve been through was not comparable at all. And now the more I think about my mother’s persistent work without giving up, I realize even more that the stuff humans—the stuff I—can achieve is infinite and there is no border that limits our potential.

Erkhes is a normal person trying to reach something he imagines he can’t reach.

Un Nuevo Horizonte Ariana Castillo

I believe in human resilience, in the ability to overcome adversity and transform difficulties into opportunities for growth. My name is Ariana, I’m seventeen years old and I was born and raised in Guatemala. I’ve been in the United States for less than two years and I feel grateful for the opportunities that life gives me.

From a young age life taught me that resilience is fundamental. At four years old after my parents’ divorce in Guatemala, my brother, my mother and I moved in with my grandmother. Only those who grew up with our mothers know how difficult it is for them to play both roles of mother and father, they have to do everything at the same time and yet still make sure that we never lack anything. Thankfully my grandmother was there to help us. She was a fundamental pillar in my life, since she was the one who took care of raising me and my brother while my mother took care of the finances.

At fifteen, I realized the reality of our situation and understood that I had to start helping my mother. I knew I needed a plan, so I decided to start working and stop studying to help her. My job wasn’t the bestpaying, but I worked hard to save what I needed, and above all, I had an experience that left a lasting mark on my life. It made me realize that we were all in the same boat, struggling to get ahead.

Many people motivated me and made me reflect on the fact that everyone in life has personal problems, some more than others, but it never hurts to be kind and empathetic to everyone, since we don’t know what other people are going through. At work, I met several people, like Analy (she was my supervisor). She was seventeen years old when I met her, and the reason she was working was for her one-year-old son. I also met Jenny (a coworker) who had just gotten out of prison and was determined to turn her life around. I met a Venezuelan family who had crossed the Darién Gap, and their goal was to reach the United States. There was Don José (a friend) who

was seventy-four years old and sold candy on the street with his grandson because the boy’s mother had abandoned them. And many more people who were going through difficult times but were doing everything they could to get ahead.

However, the thought of continuing my studies always stayed with me. After eight months of hard work, I managed to save enough money, and my mother helped me process my documents.

Upon arriving in the United States, my homesickness was mixed with strong motivation: I knew I was building a better future. When I first went to high school, I faced challenges such as the language barrier, certain prejudices against Latinos, and a lack of job opportunities, which affected my hopes and confidence. I thought things would always be that way, but I set goals for myself and worked hard to achieve them.

When my mother finally found a job, we moved to Los Angeles, where I realized that all my hard work had paid off. I saw the results of my perseverance and effort, and I understood that if I worked hard to get what I wanted and remained persistent. I could achieve anything I set my mind to; determination was my ally. It made me realize that no one would work harder for me than myself. Without neglecting good grades at school I worked hard with household chores and taking care of my brother. Supporting him with his basic daily needs due to the physical limitations caused by cerebral palsy, making him one hundred percent dependent on me. Overcoming obstacles such as mobility problems,and taking full responsibility for his care. I saved money, and eventually, my mother and I managed to get back on our feet. My family’s strength and the support of close friends were essential in keeping me going.

Over time, you will learn that every challenge is an opportunity to grow and that perseverance and consistent effort can transform any circumstance. My story about this period of my life is a testament to the fact that, with support and determination, even the most difficult obstacles can be overcome, and that leaving everything behind to rebuild a new life, continuing to fight for what you want improves your quality of life thus building resilience.There’s a phrase that has stayed

with me since I left my country and that has made me reflect on every aspect of my life: the only good thing about being down, about having fallen, and about having lost everything is that now the only way is up, to get back on your feet and start winning.

Ariana is a seventeen-year-old Guatemalan who has lived in the United States for less than two years. She is determined to succeed alongside her brother and mother. She is a courageous person who never gives up despite life’s challenges. She demonstrates unwavering determination and unshakeable loyalty, acting selflessly and striving to accept herself and be authentic despite the traditional expectations placed upon women. Most of the time, she strives to be the best version of herself.

A New Beginning Brianna Garcia

I had lived in Mexico since I was one year old with my mom and my sister. I loved living there because of all the wonderful things it had to offer. It was the best time of my life because I learned something new every day. My mom has always been the most important person in my life. She always strived to teach me the value of things and how challenging life can be. She taught me everything I know now: to appreciate everything, no matter how small, and to work hard if I want to achieve anything in life. Even though it was just her and me, and we were a small family, she always made sure I never lacked anything. She gave me love and was present in every moment, and I feel so proud of her.

When I was thirteen, I arrived in Los Angeles. I was never sure I wanted to stay; it wasn’t what I wanted. But in my mind, I always thought something would happen, that I wouldn’t stay, and that it would only be for a few days. But I ended up staying because I realized I could find better opportunities and get a job. I did it mainly for my mother; I didn’t want her to have to keep taking care of me.

Now I wanted to be the one to help her, just as she had always taken care of me. When I arrived, I met my father for the first time. We could never understand each other; we had no communication. He was completely different from my mother. It was like leaving everything good behind and being in a place I didn’t like, but where I knew I had to be.

When I started my last year of middle school, it was a terrible experience. I had a lot of problems; it was a truly awful change. On the first day, everyone was looking at me strangely. Unbeknownst to me, I didn’t encounter people with good intentions; all they knew how to do was make fun of me, tell jokes, and give me nicknames they thought were funny. I didn’t know if it was all a game or if they were really serious about everything they said, but without realizing it, it had a negative impact on my life. I wasn’t the same person I was before; all

my confidence was gone. I found it very difficult to talk to new people.

But in my second year, things started to improve. I met someone who taught me to stop worrying about things I shouldn’t, and to ignore other people’s opinions. I really needed to hear that, and I started focusing on myself, spending my time on something productive. I started working whatever jobs I could find, which helped me a lot. It kept my mind busy and prevented me from dwelling on things that weren’t worth it. I met new people and realized that there are people who truly matter, that I didn’t need anyone, that I could manage on my own, and that God would put good people in my life. I had to keep going, keep striving, and understand why I was here, so that it would all be worth it.

Tomorrow Is A New Day Jose H.

Tomorrow is a new day, not because all the bad things become great, but because we are given another opportunity to try it again or something else new. People every day carry invisible battles while they walk to get home, to school, to work. Trying to balance their dreams with responsibilities. Every big growth comes from reflection, discipline and of course from every failure. Even when motivation fades, consistency builds a better person. Life does not wait for perfect moments, it shapes us through pressure and persistence.

Every small step, effort matters, and every step back teaches us something. What defines us is not how many times we fall, but how we choose to rise and where we are.

Jose H. is a student of Academic Leadership Community. He likes to play and watch soccer, he likes music. He is a person with big dreams and every day tries to go forward with his dreams.

Thee Steadfast Champion Tournament Jose Hernandez Renoj

As the sun dipped behind the trees in Westlake, Los Angeles, turning the sky orange on a Monday afternoon in 2025, I found myself in a tense soccer match against our rivals. After missing a crucial goal, I faced intense mockery from my teammate, “Flash,” but I brushed off the comment, knowing the high-stakes nature of the game against our rivals. Despite the physical and emotional frustration, I felt a sense of camaraderie with my other teammate, “Superman,” who encouraged me to keep pushing.

Ignoring my aching feet and the adrenaline, I locked in as the game reached its climax. When the next pass came, I shot without hesitation, driving the ball into the bottom-left sided corner to secure a last-second redemption. Under a pile of celebrating teammates, I let go of the earlier frustration, knowing this decisive goal was all that mattered in the end.

Jose Renoj is from Central America and is a passionate soccer player.

He has spent years researching and playing soccer, and lives in South LA He is very persistent through challenges, but suffers from being a standard person. He never gives up in the world of professional soccer.

I’m Going to be Successful Because of Hard Work and Dedication Michael Cortez

I believe hard work pays off. I believe this because I have seen many people who have come from nothing and with hard work and dedication they have done better for themselves. For example I saw this one barber called Vicblends and how he came from the struggles and with lots of hard work and dedication he has become a professional barber who has cut up celebrities, rappers, and many more people.

This inspired me because what I have seen him do made me wanna pursue the barber industry. My dream one day is to also become a professional barber because that’s something that I really enjoy doing and I fell in love with the barber industry.

Another example of hard work paying off is when I first started playing volleyball because I wasn’t a good player or a good sport. Now this year I’m putting in the work in the gym and during volleyball practice to get better and get my skill up top for volleyball season this January. Also, when I first started playing volleyball I would always blame people for my mistakes and I would never take accountability for my mistakes. For example I used to never hustle for the ball, and when I did get there I would blame the people around me because I didn’t like taking accountability. Now this upcoming year I have gotten my emotions under control and I know I’m gonna be a better sport when it comes to losing.

I started cutting hair a few months ago, and in the beginning I didn’t really know what I was doing. Then I started watching videos online and I tried my first cut on my little brother and I messed him up very badly, and I felt bad because I didn’t like how it looked. But over time, I have gotten really good at it and now I be cutting up more people— not just my little brothers but all my friends and my cousins. I have also invested more money in myself now that I have gotten better and I’m very grateful to have very supportive parents that support me in achieving my dream of becoming a professional barber The one and only, Michael Cortez.

My life long dream Jessie C.

I always wondered what my life long dream would be. I thought about playing big league baseball, or becoming a musician, or also becoming a doctor but there are really a lot of things I wish to be. Things are really not easy to stay focused on. I honestly just love playing baseball. I really have a huge passion for it and I really wanna go pro and play for any major team but you know it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. So that’s why if that doesn’t work out I will try and be a musician or like to play for any big artist and go on from there, or become a doctor. I don’t know, it really is a dream I had thought about when I was a little kid. But it takes a lot of work and a lot of time which is why I don’t know truly what I really want to be when I grow up. It’s always important to think about what your life long dream is gonna be, because you might never know what you actually want to be. Don’t end up like me where I have a lot of dreams and yet none of them come true, that is why it’s always important to focus on one thing only!

Jessie is a sixteen-year-old Guatemala/Mexican that was raised and born in the US, he lives with his dad who has raised him his whole life and always looks up to him and he wants to achieve something big to make his dad proud.

A Different Path Isaiah Peña

I lived my life thinking that things could just be perfect. But the reality is that nothing is perfect, everyone and everything has flaws. It just depends whether you know what yours are and if you want to change as a person to be better or if you want to stay the same. I noticed my flaws after a while and I started to work on becoming a better version of myself. I can’t say that I fixed all my flaws because I know I am not perfect but I’m working on being the person that I would want to be around or be with. A flaw I have is that I tend to ruin things with people because I think about it too much and I try to control things or people to make it perfect but I have to remember that nothing is perfect. I’m working on this by focusing on what I can control, like focusing on controlling my emotions and trying to word things differently so that I don’t sound controlling.

I also have to be open to hearing what flaws people see that I have so that I can improve myself but I have to see if the flaws people say that I have are actually things I have to fix or if it’s just things people don’t like. It’s difficult trying to change when you’re surrounded by people who judge others instead of judging themselves to improve. I would have to learn to ignore what people have to say about me if it’s negative and see if it’s not worth my energy. But I’m working on it and it’s going well so far but I have some days where I lose sight of my path to my goal.

That’s why it is good to see how much you improved that day or how far you fell so that you have motivation to get back on track. I know there are some people that will say that they are perfect and they don’t have to improve but that’s not true. No one is perfect but that also doesn’t mean you get to use that as an excuse to treat people like trash. One example from my life is when I found out that someone that I was with cheated and said that they weren’t perfect as an excuse to get out of the situation. They decided to act like nothing happened and didn’t apologize for what they did and kept disrespecting me after that. Sometimes you just want to change someone but it’s pointless because people don’t change unless they actually want to.

Then, there’s times where people try to improve themselves but their friends persuade them to go down a different path. A path they don’t want to follow but they are either too worried or lost and don’t know where to start. I am probably wrong because I don’t know people’s reasons for their actions.

Isaiah P. is a person who wants to have a peaceful life or close to peaceful life.

The Truth Yeferson Lorenzo

Is this what I really want in life to stop playing soccer? Wanting something in life can mean many things for people. For me, that something is to accomplish my dreams to be successful. What I really mean by that is to hopefully be able to play on the big stages one day. This sport has me attached and I’m not ready to let go just now. It’s calling me back every single time I try to stop. Maybe it’s a sign who knows?

I’m not going to stop anytime soon. All I need is one chance to prove my worth. Hopefully this new year I will be given a chance to try again at a new club. My goal isn’t just to join a new high competitive club, my goal is to get connected with college coaches and hopefully be able to play college ball. I’m not just talking JUCO—I’m talking NCAA. I know what I’m aiming for isn’t going to come easy. There’s a lot more kids out there working for the same goal/dream as I have. It’s going to be a long run.

The Bike William Gonzalez

Never give up. I remember when I first bought my bike which is an Elite Bandit, a size 29.The frame is white, the rest is black, a fixed gear bike with no brakes and bars cut. I wanted to learn how to wheelie and I practiced everyday. In the street, I would practice and see what mistakes I was making and what I could do to keep improving and I never gave up. Some of the things that I’ve been through with my bike are going out during the day, the afternoon, and while riding alone many things have happened. Like a time I was being chased because someone tried to rob me but even after all that I never stopped and continued to ride. Until I finally was able to do tricks on my bike, I never stopped trying even when I thought I couldn’t and through the fear of trying to get robbed once again. I kept practicing and then I was able to. Now I practice to do more and never stop trying because everything is possible as long as you never give up.

William G. is a sixteen-year-old who likes to go out, ride bikes, and do wheelies. William likes to stay home and sleep and relax and spend time with family.

Tricks On The Bike Gomez

The first time I wanted to do tricks on the bike was when I was eleven years old. I remembered that day when my friends and I went to the park to play soccer, I saw some guys doing tricks on the bike and the way they did the tricks impressed me because they had a fixed/ fixie bike and they were doing tricks like the bunny hop, barnspin, 180-Turnout, and the Keo Spin. In a fixed/fixie bike it doesn’t need that much force to lift it and the wheels have a width of 19mm to 30mm.

After that, I told my friends that one day I would do those tricks and much more. They were laughing but at the same time they told me that I could do it. I didn’t have the right bike to do the tricks, but later my parents bought me a BMX bike and I felt very happy. It is a specialized, compact bicycle designed for racing on dirt tracks or performing freestyle tricks in skateparks and streets. It also has 20-inch wheels, sometimes 24-inch wheels. At first they didn’t like it, and they thought it was an error buying me the bike because I was hurting myself by falling and falling. But once I had my bike I started to practice and practice even though I fell every time. After a month and a half, I learned four tricks like the wheelie where you need to lower the seat, stand on the pedals, and shift your body weight down and back; barspin (it’s a trick where you need to throw the bars at the peak of a jump, catching them with the opposite hand, and leveling the bike);, tailwhips (a trick that requires kicking the frame with the back foot while using arms to swing the handlebars in a tight, circular motion); and bunny hop (you just need to jump obstacles). After I succeeded in the four tricks I felt very happy because I learned those four new tricks. After I showed my friends they were surprised but not at all because they had new bikes and learned tricks too. I was happy because we could go out to the parks and do tricks. Now when my friends and I do tricks on the bike we feel that nothing can stop us from doing it and that’s the only thing we all want to do.

After we went to the parks there were some kids that knew more tricks and we asked them for tips and tricks, they helped us learn some new tricks and how to make them perfectly. We became friends with them and more others who were at the park doing tricks. We made a bike group on Instagram to make plans or go out to the

streets. We also made some new friends from Instagram because they wanted to be part of the group and learn more tricks like we did.

That day my friends and I felt very happy because we would be able to go out with some more people but with caution on the streets. We made plans for a Sunday ride from Crypto Arena to Santa Monica Beach.

After we all made it to Santa Monica we swimmed and played soccer for a bit, then we all just went back home. My parents didn’t like the idea that I was going out too much and riding on the streets but I told them to not be afraid because I was doing it with caution and that nothing will happen to me because we were riding and going out in a group. When my cousins came to my house they were surprised at how much I had advanced with the tricks, and said that they wanted to learn tricks too. I told them to join the group chat on Instagram and asked my aunt for permission for them to go out whenever we had rides from one place to another. After all, I learned that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. This changes my addiction to being on the phone.

He likes to play sports, video games, do tricks on the bike, likes to make money, likes to sleep, likes to play the guitar (he’s not that good), and loves to dance bachata.

Poem for Me Manuel Tzampop

Sometimes I don’t know where I’m going, but I keep walking anyway.

I’m afraid, but I also have strength, even though I don’t always show it.

I’ve been through painful things, but I’m still standing here, because even if we fall a thousand times, I’ll get back up again.

I’m not perfect, don’t try to be, I just want to move forward, step by step, day by day, always looking ahead.

Effort Kills Talent Jonathan V.

When I started the tenth grade I was talking with my friends about what we would do for that year. Last year we said that we would join the basketball team or soccer, but they didn’t want to join the soccer team so our only option was to join basketball. But I didn’t know how to play basketball, so my goal was to learn how to play,but I only had two months to learn. I was willing to learn. I started to watch videos of basketball, go to parks to practice and play, and I asked for advice from my friends. I did exercises for more speed, more conditioning, to jump higher and be stronger. I was like that for two months and then basketball season started. I went to the tryouts. We played and did some moves, and at the end of practice the coach told me that I made the team.

I was so nervous. The first day of practice I didn’t understand the plays but some partners and my friends helped me. With the days I got it. I understood it and I could do it some days after the first game had arrived. I still remember my first game. It was against Hollywood, and on the way there I was so nervous. I was thinking about how I was going to play and if I would mess up. At that moment I thought about everything like how the game would be? If I played badly? If we happened to lose, what would they think about me? I just knew I had to calm down, so I started listening to music to relax. By the time we arrived, I was much calmer. When the game was about to start, I got nervous again. My hands were shaking, I was sweating, I was dizzy, my heart was beating fast, and I was scared. The game went on, and I wasn’t being put into play. I thought I wouldn’t play at all because it was the last quarter and there were only seven minutes left. But then they put me in with those seven minutes remaining. About three minutes passed, and I hadn’t even touched the ball until it finally came to me. But I was so nervous that I made a bad pass. Then the coach called a timeout and talked to the team. I don’t remember exactly what he said to me, but he calmed my nerves and motivated me.

When we went back to play, I stole the ball from the opponent and made an assist to my teammate.

By the end of the game, I ended up with 3 assists. Over time, I played more basketball, and I liked it more and more. I learned to play better, made new friends, and overcame my fears some games after. Now I don’t play for the school team but I go to the parks and practice. After all, I learned that with a lot of effort, you can achieve your goals and dreams, as long as you work hard enough.

I Won It All Joshua Ruiz

t was a cold night and I was hungry. I had spent all my money on my gambling addiction. I decided to call my closest homie David.

“Yo David.”

“What up Von?” “I was wondering if you can send me ten dollars.”

“Again?”

“Yeah sorry, I just been low on money recently but I promise I’ll pay you back like always.”

“Alright then bro, it’s sending.”

“Thanks gang. Later.”

I’m heading towards the nearest store to check out what they got.

As I’m walking I can’t stop thinking about how I lost then that led up to something worse. I start to think what if I just spent these last ten bucks on a quick slot machine, I imagine everything I could gain, the thought starts to eat at me more since I need the money. Eventually my addiction takes control: “IfIlose all my money I don’t get to eat tonight and I can’t complain,” I say to myself. I arrived at the casino. I exchanged my 10 bucks and now I’m at the slot machine.

All the bright colors from the machines give me hope, they are all so colorful and I forget I’m even broke when I start looking at the winning prizes. It’ss so bright and colorful I’m always reminded of the arcades I used to go to as a kid. I’m sitting down at the slot machine, I’m nervous, I feel butterflies in my stomach and it’s not the good ones. I don’t wanna lose this money. I touch the handle, I’m nervous, I push it.

Each box starts spinning, the first box chimes, I get a golden pig and I’m shocked. The adrenaline rush kicks in. The second box chimes.

It’s another golden pig (I gasp). I’m feeling the butterflies and then the last box…. Another golden pig. I scream “HELL YEA!” I see the money go up and I get a nice lil 100. Then I just started wishing I spent my whole life savings on that roll. I leave though and I decide to get a grip and not risk losing this 100. I’m feeling happy so I leave the casino and treat myself to a decent restaurant and get a steak and I send my homie his ten back as promised. I have 30 dollars left so I decide to gamble... Long story short I lose it all, “But it’s alright because it’s just thirty dollars,” I think.

One Month Later My addiction hasn’t gotten any better. I lost my job and I lost my home…. I’m homeless now and my friend David stopped talking to me because I couldn’t turn my life around. It’s a dark night and I’m trying to sleep. I just spent my last dollars begging on the street at the casino. As I’m trying to sleep I notice a rich-looking fellow. He’s wearing a white suit with a black tie. He comes towards my direction and I think nothing of it… just that he’s passing by. To my surprise he told me something. Patrick reaches into his pocket, I give him an eyebrow raised look.

“Hey, you’re that guy from the casino, right?”

“Yeah, why?”

“What’s your first name?”

“Von. And you are?”

“Patrick.”

He pulls out two bands of 100-dollar bills and drops them on me. My mouth drops and my eyes widen. He leaves without saying anything except “Thank you!” as he leaves. He didn’t say a word and just gave me money for no reason. That was weird but I’m not complaining. I’m still so shocked and then there’s only one thing that comes to mind: “The casino” I whisper while looking at the money bricks I’m holding.

“At least $10,000 I’m holding, I must double it.” I made it to the casino.

I go to the roulette game and I’m thinking about what I should bet on. After a good ten minutes go by, I finally decide, black 15. I bet all my money on black 15. I place my bet and then soon the wheel starts

spinning and the ball is moving, passing by my number again and again. The wheel slows down and passes my number, My cheeks are clenched and my hands are together praying I win. The ball stops and it lands on my number “HELL YEA,” I scream, I’m a freaking millionaire now. I’m looking at the payout and it’s $360,000. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Two Months Later It’s been two months since I won that life changing bet and since then I’ve decided to stop gambling and take it as a sign. I’ve invested in a local shop in Miami and now make a good living from it. I’m a millionaire now since I’ve invested my money into these shops and have a wife and two kids.

Beginning Of Track & Field Enrique Hernandez

The first time I went to track and field practice, I stood at the edge of the track wondering if I should even be there. The red track felt wide and intimidating, stretching farther than I expected, and everyone around me seemed confident, like they already knew exactly what they were doing. I watched runners jog past me, adjusting their spikes and talking easily with teammates, while I stood there feeling unsure.

After a moment, I tightened my shoes, took a deep breath, and told myself I would just try it once When practice started, the coach blew the whistle and we took off running. The track felt long, even though it was only a few laps. After a while, my breathing got louder and my chest started to burn. My legs felt tired, and every step took more effort than the last. I started down at the red track and listened to my shoes hitting the ground, telling myself not to stop. Part of me wanted to slow down, but I didn’t want to quit on the first day. As I ran, a teammate passed me and said, “Don’t quit, you’re doing good.” Hearing that helped me keep going.

By the time I finished the lap, I was exhausted, but I felt proud that I didn’t stop Blocks set, I take my stance, The 100 and 200, my first chance.

Each Sprint a push, each lap a gain, Learning my strength, embracing the strain The wind against me, the track beneath, I find my rhythm, I find my speed.

Walking off the track, I realized something had changed. Track wasn’t just about running it was about proving to myself that I could push through discomfort and doubt. That first day transformed the direction of my life by teaching me perseverance and confidence. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to keep showing up, not just for the sport, but for myself. I had learned that I was capable of more than I thought.

Just a high school student that has a passion for running in ALC that made this book, there is nothing much to write about.

All I Have Done Is Enough Mark De Leon

I am not the firstborn child but one trying to live up to the expectations set by the first. My sister is an incredible person that has inspired me in many ways either with her work in advocacy or giving back to the community. I greatly love and respect her, although with expectations to at least match her if not surpass her, I found myself compared to her and noticed my own shortcomings. With her success in aiming for higher education and getting accepted and attending UC Berkeley, I felt an immense burden put on me to do better. We have differing goals and took similar but different steps to attempt to reach them.

My sister pursues a career in public policy whereas I want to pursue a career in STEM, leading to our differing routes. Despite these differing goals I compared every aspect between trying to determine how I could one up her. Such a comparison was demoralizing. I was trying to recreate what she did as it worked for her, but I did things slightly differently and because of it I thought I wouldn’t be able to succeed since I didn’t do things to the level she did. On Saturdays I had an internship to go work at a farm. Considering it was a 40-minute drive to get there, I had to start my day at six. I was working until four, and another 40-minute drive home awaited me. I was exhausted, but then I remembered that I still had another meeting for a program I was a part of. Continuing to keep my working mind on for another two hours until six further tired me, and the realization that I had to go to church that same day also infuriated me as I didn’t have a chance to rest at home. I ate, then had a 20-minute break until I had to be out again from seven to nine. Such a difficult day made me rethink how much I’ve actually been doing. Having to endure these days consistently, I reflected on myself and all the things I’d done. I realised that I had given so much effort and done so much. I looked into my past, seeing all the volunteer hours I had given every program I joined to better my chances for college. Seeing how packed my schedule was showed me that all I had done was enough. I have made my own path and am proud of it. The most important lesson I have learned is to be proud of your own accomplishments and to compare them not to others but

instead to what was available to you and how much effort you put into searching for those opportunities.

‘Macarthur Fall’ Wilmer Tambriz

Macarthur Park stands as an infamous park in Los Angeles, known for its trash-filled paths and homeless population. Growing up around Westlake, I watched countless attempts to renovate this park, but in the end, nothing ever worked out.

This park was my childhood. Before the pandemic, I visited this park weekly because of its active U-10 and U-13 soccer league. Although the field was uneven, I made many friends and memories. One of my favorite moments was losing 11-2. Even though we lost tremendously, I was still ecstatic about scoring and acted like I’d won the World Cup. Slowly, I noticed the park began to change. First, trash piled up around the field. Empty bottles and trash bags became a common occurrence at my practices on weekdays. Tents then began to appear on my walk to this park. On some days, I’d have to skip practice because of my parents’ concern regarding this park’s safety.

One day, I watched a man walk up the hill while carrying a machete. I froze, yet everybody around me continued with their activity. And for the first time, the park didn’t feel like it was for children.

I had hope. I remember a renovation attempt began in 2021. Weeks had passed, and the park finally opened. The walkway was finally cleared of trash; the grass was as green as grasshoppers; and the homeless situation was finally over. Right?

Wrong. Not even two weeks had passed before the park returned to its original form. I lost all hope.

As more years passed, more drastic ‘renovations’ have been put into place, however, they seem to have done more damage than good.

Barricades, for example, meant to allow sidewalks to be accessible by removing street vendors, only harmed the park’s reputation.

Wilmer Tambriz is a student at ALC. His favorite park is Macarthur Park. He loves the people who walk there and hopes everybody visits it for its wonderful greenery and safe scenery.

Sonder Zaihra Micz

Humans are fundamentally curious beings. The act of perspective-taking offers emotional solace, while an interest in personal histories fosters genuine connection, don’t you think?

Sonder is the name of the album I listened to mostly every single day by my “one of one’’ artist, Brent Faiyaz. Seeing the word “sonder” constantly on Spotify finally made me want to get to the bottom of it.

There was a moment when I actually searched it up, and I found out that it was a term used to capture a profound realization: the understanding that every individual passerby has their own life as vivid and complex as yours. The moment I found out about its meaning, I realized that I’m just a girl who is lucky enough to be amazed about how life works—without exception. Having knowledge of the word “sonder” changed me—it shifted my perspective, connecting me more with the people around me, and honoring one another’s existence and stories. This marks the inception of my poem, from the initial spark to its final form.

Sonder Somewhere in the world, it’s yesterday, Where some awake while others sleep.

Some of us may not be on the same page, but I know that all of us are experiencing something that will get the best out of life.

Zaihra Micz, a type of person who recognizes the depth of another person’s existence beyond her limited view. She’s the kind of girl who won’t speak unless spoken to, yet she values exploring and acknowledging one another’s perspectives. She treasures the human experience through stories, feeling as though she lives many lives through others, while remaining on her own.

We’re All to Blame Emiliano Gonzales-Salaz

Imagine yourself in a whole different universe, where humans and ghouls coexist. Similar to our world, this world is divided by fear and survival. They blend into the crowd, and, while they may have human forms, they couldn’t be any more different. Many of these ghouls hide who they are and live double lives just to escape death. Ghouls have no other choice but to live through fear and dread.

Ghouls are misapprehended for evil, in this world they are seen as predatory monsters, but they rather possess empathy, love, companionship. While humans like the CCG can be ruthless and “monstrous” The CCG (Commission Of Counter Ghoul) justifies its brutal actions against the ghouls through legal dehumanization and a “greater good” philosophy and they are killed and exterminated. The worldview is that humans cannot coexist with these ghouls.

Us immigrants are the ghouls and are seen as an issue in today’s society. We are mistreated and treated like “monsters,” we are discriminated against and pointed fingers at just because we want a fair chance at life. There is no humanity in the world anymore, and we are seeing it through immigrants. This is shown all over the news and through social media, countless videos of ICE raids, forcefully making their way into these peoples’ jobs and homes. Officers applying excessive force like pepper spraying, choking and arresting them without a reason.

Disrupting the peace between these communities. Immigrants have not been taught any other way but to live through fear and dread.

You’re wrong. It’s not the world that’s messed up; it’s those of us in it.

Yes, some immigrants walk a path that leaves sorrow in their wake, but just like any other human being, we can choose a different path altogether. We have a lot to learn, both your kind and mine. You can’t point your finger at immigrants or people of color. We’re all to blame.

Another Example of ICE Gabriel Mendoza

Around the United States hundreds of people are getting deported and taken into ice custody everyday. Families are getting separated from each other because of the president and his ice agents. There are over 2.5 million people that Trump’s administration has deported a good part of, those being self deportations. Detention centers everywhere are completely full with innocent people they have taken into custody. Most of the ICE agents are Hispanic, too. More than 50% are Hispanic/Latino that come from immigrant families.

An example that isn’t personal but was in my community was with an ALC student that got deported with her mom outside an immigration office. They were sent back to Guatemala on July 4th, 2024 along with her mother. Another example is someone my dad knows and he said that there was a guy selling flowers in front of his house a while back and they took him. Then about two weeks ago they took the guy that replaced the other one. Another example of ICE in my community is at the Home Depot on Wilshire and Union. They have raided that home depot multiple times trying to take the immigrant people that go there to buy and the people that look for work outside of it.

ICE does not only deport and separate people, they also kill people.

They killed a woman who was thirty-seven years old and was shot and killed by ICE on January 7, 2026.

Gabriel was a kid born and raised in LA. He did not want to write this; he was forced to for a grade.

I wonder if I’ll ever see the eyes that stared at me with so much love again.

I wonder if I’ll get to touch your skin the same way as when you loved me.

I wonder and when I do I wonder if you have forgotten me.

I wonder if all those words you said to me meant anything to you now.

If I see you again will I break down in tears and beg you to come back?

I wonder and wonder but in all my wonders I realize all my hopes and dreams for our future together are nothing but hopes and dreams.

The laughter we both shared that you loved so much will never come again and again, I laugh hoping you’d at least still love the way I laugh.

The memories we shared are nothing but memories and they will never be forgotten or made again.

The love we once shared will always fade and we will become strangers.

The songs we both loved will turn into ones that neither of us knows.

Even then, I try in my own twisted way to not bring myself to message you.

The what-ifs never fail to leave my mind all night.

A Love that Waited Pither P.

I got Dobi when I was five. My mom and I chose his name together, and from that moment on, it felt like we grew up side by side. Honestly, it felt like I’d had him my whole life, like he was there even before I could remember.

Dobi was everything you could ever wish for in a dog. He was smart and independent, but deeply affectionate in the ways that mattered most. When I first started school, I had curly hair, a mini afro I didn’t yet know how to love. There was a teacher who bullied me for it. He would pull my hair, call me names, and make me feel ashamed of something that was part of me. I came home crying almost every day, hating my reflection.

Dobi always knew.

The moment I walked through the door, he would come running, making soft, sad noises, pressing against me like he was trying to hold my heart together. He never failed to comfort me. Not once.

When I changed schools, Dobi began walking me there every morning. He stayed with me until I went inside or met my friends, like it was his responsibility. After school, he would already be waiting, sitting outside, staring at the classroom door. He was never late. When he saw me, his tail would wag like nothing else in the world mattered. On the walk home, I told him everything. I talked to him like he understood me, because somehow it felt like he did.

It was just the three of us, my mom, Dobi, and me. He wasn’t a pet. He was family. When my mom cried, Dobi would whine softly and place his paw on her, as if to say, I’m here. He brought warmth and safety to our quiet home.

Then we left.

I was seven when my mom told me we were going to the beach. I believed her, but something inside me screamed to take Dobi with me. I didn’t know yet that we were moving to the United States, to California, to Los Angeles. When I realized the truth, panic took over. I begged to go back. I said I would be okay with moving if we could just take him. We couldn’t.

The journey took fifteen days. Right after crossing the Rio Grande, we were caught in a fenced farm-like area. My mom and I were nearly separated,kids on one side, adults on the other but we stayed together. Lucky. We slept on the rough ground, mothers curled up on benches or in corners, children near the doors, all of us waiting… waiting for something we didn’t understand. The sun was hot during the day, cold at night, and the quiet of the field made everything feel heavier.

The food was small and bland, enough to survive, but not enough to feel safe. I was scared. Nothing felt like home.

We stayed there for about two months before being released and continuing our journey. Finally, we arrived in Los Angeles on my birthday, September 25th.

Every day, I missed Dobi. I imagined him outside our old door, scratching softly, waiting to be let in the way he always did. I told myself this wouldn’t take long, that we would go back, and I would hug him again. Believing that kept me strong. Detention changed me. I learned that some things, like memories and love, matter more than anything that can be replaced, and that even in places where you feel unwanted, there can still be kindness.

I called my aunt in Guatemala, and she told me Dobi cried too. That broke me every time.

My aunt checked on him. She fed him. She said he slept in front of our door, waiting. He barely ate. He never wagged his tail the same way again. He grew older, sadder, thinner, still loyal to a home that no longer answered him.

One day, she found him sleeping forever.

What hurts the most is knowing he died waiting for me, believing that I would come back. Writing this brings me to tears. I feel guilty. I feel grief.

Dobi taught me the value of memories, how love doesn’t disappear just because time passes or distance grows. Some memories hurt, but they also remind us that we were deeply loved, that we mattered to someone without ever having to prove it. Dobi loved me when I was small, scared, and unsure of myself, and that stayed with me even after he was gone.

Pither has three cats and can’t wait to cuddle with them.

People always assume I’m angry.

Not “having a bad day” angry like I woke up and chose violence. Like I’m silently judging everyone’s outfits, their laughs, the way they walk down the hallway like they own the place. Like my face is a warning sign people should read before they get too close.

I didn’t decide to look like this. My face just settles into sharp lines when I’m thinking. My eyebrows naturally rest low, and my eyes don’t do that soft, friendly thing other peoples’ eyes do. I used to practice smiling in the mirror, stretching my lips until my cheeks hurt, but the second I stopped trying, my face would fall right back into its usual shape.

My mom was the first person who said it out loud when I was a kid.

“Why do you always have that look on your face? Your friends wanted to approach you earlier but they got scared by the look on your face.”

She told me one afternoon while she was driving back home from school. Her tone wasn’t cruel. It was simple, like she was telling me my sleeves were too long.

I froze, giving her a questioning look. “What look?”

She continued while her eyes were focused on the road. “Like you’re judging someone from just their looks. You look intimidating, like someone people shouldn’t mess with.

It was supposed to be a compliment, I think. But middle school didn’t translate that strength into something pretty. It translated it into something lonely, especially for girls.

After that, every time someone avoided sitting next to me, my mom’s words played like a repeating broken record I couldn’t skip.

Like you’re judging someone.

Scared by the look on your face.

Like you’re angry.

It followed me around like a shadow, through the cafeteria, through group projects, through the moments when people laughed in clusters and I stood just outside of them like a shadow. It followed me even when I wasn’t doing anything wrong, especially then.

Because doing nothing wrong wasn’t enough. Not when you looked like this.

So I stopped trying.

Not in a dramatic, I-don’t-need-anyone kind of way. More like… a quiet surrender. I told myself it didn’t matter. I told myself friendships were messy, and people were temporary, and I didn’t need to chase something I clearly wasn’t built for.

If people didn’t want to be around me, fine.

I’d be good at something else.

I poured everything into academics because grades didn’t care what my face looked like. Numbers didn’t flinch when I walked in. Essays didn’t whisper to each other or glance away like I was contagious.

My notebook became my safest place. My highlighters were bright and obedient. My planner never made excuses.

By the time I got into middle school, I walked with my shoulders back, my face calm and unreadable, like I was permanently unimpressed by everything. People call it confidence. Teachers called it maturity. My mom called it The Look.

But really, it was a wall.

A wall I built so slowly that I didn’t even notice it going up, brick by brick, every time I got embarrassed, disappointed, ignored, or misunderstood. Every time I learned that being too open meant being too easy to hurt.

I didn’t mean to change. It just happened.

And the worst part?

I missed who I used to be.

Because before all of that, I was outgoing. I was the kind of girl who would compliment your shoes without thinking twice. The kind girl who laughed so loud, the kind to get in trouble for being too curious and energetic. I used to walk into rooms like I belonged there, like the world was a place that wanted me.

Then life got heavier.

And I got quieter.

Most days, I sat alone, not because I wanted to, but because It felt easier than wondering If I belonged. I watched friendships happen around me and told myself I didn’t need them. That I was fine. That I preferred my own space.

Still, I noticed people around me.

Not friends… Not yet.

People I saw often. People I recognized. People I exchanged small smiles or quick hellos with. In my mind, they were acquaintances. That word felt safe. It didn’t require closeness or expectations.

Over time, those acquaintances became familiar. We ended up in the same places. Sitting nearby. Walking in the same direction. Sharing quiet moments without pressure.

Nothing dramatic changed. No big conversations. No sudden connection.

Just time.

Slowly, the wall didn’t feel as necessary. I laughed more without thinking about it. I felt less guarded. I started to look forward to those familiar faces instead of pretending I didn’t notice them.

At some point, I realized that I was no longer alone.

I hadn’t even made an announcement. I hadn’t labeled anything. But I was spending more time with them, and it felt natural. Comfortable.

Safe.

That’s when I understood something important.

I didn’t build my wall to keep everyone out. I built it to protect myself.

And I didn’t need to tear it down all at once.

I just needed to let the right people stand close enough.

Because it was never that I was mean.

Or scary.

Or unapproachable.

It was my face.

And behind it, I was still learning how to belong.

Chapter Three: Spring 57

Robo-leg Yaretzi Ortiz

I always took pride in the fact that I had never broken a bone, however, that did not last very long. It was during my first year of soccer, I was excited to try a new sport and start as goalie. I was positive that it would be a great season and nothing would happen to me. Before I initially joined I had my fears both mentally and physically. Since I knew the only position I was willing to play was goalie I feared that the outcome of the game would be on me and I would let the team down. That was my biggest worry until my second game. During the first half as I was going for the ball, I felt a collision in what I thought was my shinguard against the other player’s leg. I heard a pop and landed on the floor. As I looked down, I no longer saw my ankle in the right spot; it was limp and hanging off my leg. I began to panic, my heart sank and then started to race when I tried to move my ankle and received no response. My mind went blank, my surroundings became blurry but at that moment I saw my mom rush through everyone surrounding me with great worry on her face. As they helped me up, they took me to the car and rushed me to the hospital. I had learned that I dislocated my ankle and broke my tibia and fibula and would be needing surgery where I was given metal plates and screws. Breaking my ankle was one of the worst things I’ve ever been through. This was a time where I was at my absolute lowest, and I am very grateful for all of the support I have gotten from friends and family. However, there are some important people who I haven’t thanked as much as I wanted to.

To Coach Wendy, Thank you for being the #1 person to always check up on me and my healing process. There wasn’t a week that you wouldn’t. You reminded me that healing takes time. You are the person that integrated me back into the team after my injury. You never once made me feel alone even though I felt out of place. Thank you for getting me my ankle brace and thank you for supporting me during this time. I will always be grateful for you and the impact you’ve had on me.

Thank you for being the one person to truly make me laugh and forget about everything. With you, it felt like everything was normal and I could think about something else other than what had happened.

Thank you for rolling me to places I couldn’t walk to, for always reminding me to take my pills, for making me laugh whenever you called me robo-leg, for reminding me that surgery was a good thing despite my fears, helping me see the bright side of things, and for trying to get me flowers even though the hospital didn’t allow it. Without you, my experience would’ve been so much more depressing. Thank you for being my light in the dark.

To Papi, Thank you for pushing me to do things I wasn’t sure I could do. If there was an elevator, you’d encourage me to take the stairs because I “needed to practice.” You’d purposefully park millions of miles away from our destination because I “needed to walk.” You knew that I could do it and you were always there to make sure I was okay.

Because of your encouragement and motivation, I was able to let go of my crutches a lot quicker than expected, and I was able to finally walk and do things I wanted to do. Thank you for getting me a scooter (even though I didn’t get to use it). Thank you for taking me out to eat after my surgery because I “needed to get out of the house.” I never felt helpless or weak around you. Thank you pa, you’re the best.

To Mommy, I’m sorry that instead of spending your birthday at a nice restaurant like we planned, you spent it worrying in the hospital. I’m sorry that the first thing you saw when you arrived at the game was me on the floor. I’m sorry that you had to go to work to take care of those who couldn’t take care of themselves and then come back home to do the same routine for me. I’m sorry that you felt like it should’ve been you instead of me. I’m sorry for not being able to express my gratitude when you were helping me. I’m sorry that all I could do was stare blankly at the wall. I know that I was silent, but all I could think of was: thank you. For helping me shower and wash my hair, for helping me overcome my panic attacks, for dressing me when I couldn’t, for buying me clothes that were comfortable and fit over my cast, for dealing with my frustrations, for always making sure my leg felt okay, for always making sure I didn’t fall, for catching me when I did, for

being the first person I saw when I woke up from surgery. Thank you for being my rock even though you needed one yourself. No amount of thank you’s will ever be enough to express how I feel. You are my everything ma. I love you.

Playing Both Parts Luz Cano

Many people hear stories about mothers having to play both parts for their kids but this time you’re going to hear about a father having to play both parts for his daughter. My mom and dad were the typical divorced parents when I was young. I always felt a need for my dad while being with my mom because when I was with her she wasn’t really there. She would rather go out to parties or hang out with one of her boyfriends. With her I never felt comfortable. Sometimes it just felt like she was a person I just knew. Which started to make me resent her for never being around. I’m also named after my mom. I even started hating when people would call me Yesenia just because it reminded me of her and I just didn’t wanna be reminded of her. But when I would be with my dad he would take me everywhere with him no matter what the one place I didn’t really feel alone or unworthy of someone’s attention.

So you can guess that I moved with my dad permanently, me and dad were basically a duo. We would always be together and I was a daddy’s girl. He bought me everything I wanted. He would still show up for me no matter what even if he was struggling himself. He would always show up to my elementary performance and would always support me in the dreams I had. When I told him I wanted to learn how to do nails he ordered me a whole starter kit the next day and would even let me practice on him when my brothers didn’t want to let me practice on them. When he would get me ready for school he would struggle with my hair and I would tell him I didn’t like it and would do it myself from a very early age and that’s when I started rocking a low ponytail everyday since it was the only easy hairstyle to do. I started learning to do things myself because in a way it would make it easier for my dad. As well in elementary when kids would get lice I had gotten them and me and my dad would go to cvs and go buy lice shampoo and he would put it in my hair and wrap my hair in a plastic bag to let it sit then we would wash it off he would use the comb that came with the packet. As well when I would tell him I needed lashes or lash glue for the next day no matter what time of day it was he would always take me just to make me happy.

My mom never did anything like that for me. Even now sometimes we go months with out speaking to each other and when she remembers she has a daughter she always tells me “you never call me” and I always say “The phone works both ways.” To me in a way I feel like if you have a kid YOU should be the one to call them and make sure they’re okay. But even though my dad does everything for me I still feel a mothers love missing inside of me. But I never let it affect me as much because I have a loving father that would go above and beyond for me and is the only one truly there for me and I will always be grateful to have a father like him.

Thank You Alisson Romero

“Tienes que estudiar para que no andes trabajando así de duro como nosotros.” “You have to study so you don’t end up working hard like us.” My mom and dad would constantly tell me this when I was younger, but I never fully understood what they meant. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to realize its true meaning. They’ve just wanted me to live a different life from the one they had to live.

My parents have been working tirelessly their whole lives. From having to provide for their families in El Salvador, to later providing for their children. Even when I was little, I’d notice how hard my parents worked to take care of my brother and me.

When I was in elementary, my mom worked night shifts and wouldn’t come home until around two in the morning. Despite being exhausted, she would still get up at seven in the morning to make breakfast and take us to school. I know it must’ve been very demanding to take care of two young children while being sleep deprived. And my dad, who has gotten up at around four or five in the morning ever since I can remember. He’s been working as a gardener for around 27 years.

He works very long, grueling hours for six days of the week. I can tell that his job is difficult, as there’s been several times he’s come home with cuts and scrapes that he gets while working. Due to this, he is constantly under a lot of exhaustion and stress. But, he still tries his best to spend time with us.

My mom and dad are truly the most hardworking people I know, who have sacrificed things for their family and never complained about it.

Both of them came to the United States looking for better opportunities. They were scared, and not knowing what to expect, as they used to live in poor and small villages. They never really had the opportunity to study and pursue a higher education, which is why they push me hard to do well in school. They’ve told me stories about their childhoods, how most of the time they’d barely have any food and would have to share the little amounts they had with their entire families.

Hearing those stories has always made me tear up because I realize that is the reason why they make sure we’ve always had food on our

table. That is why they work so hard, to give us things that they were never able to have as children, and so that my brother and I wouldn’t have to suffer the way they did. Words cannot describe how grateful I am for my parents and for everything they have done.

Alisson is an eleventh grade student at the Academic Leadership Community. She is very caring and empathetic towards the people she loves. She wishes to graduate from high school and go to college.

Learning Love Through You Hannah Olguin To My Parents: I’m eternally grateful for everything you both have done for me. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more aware and appreciative of all the small moments that once went unnoticed. Thank you for teaching me to always see the good in people and help those in need. I’m grateful to have you both in my life and for all the sacrifices you have made for me and my siblings.

To Ma: One of the things I admire the most about you is your patience and care, particularly during frustrating moments. You never get mad when I break my phone for the hundredth time. Even though you’ve spent a lot of money replacing them, not once have you ever made me feel guilty. This patience is something you have shown me throughout my life. For instance, that time when my cats scratched your couch, or when they made a mess out of your plants. I know having two cats and four kittens is a lot of work, so I appreciate your dedication to taking care of them while I’m not at home. This same care shows up in multiple ways. When I was younger, you would always take the time to dress me up and try different hairstyles on me, making sure I always looked nice.

I know I rant a lot sometimes, but you’ve always been there to listen to my thoughts, even if I’m not in a good mood. You always manage to make me laugh and put a smile on my face. Thank you for always driving me to the mall and going shopping with me, thank you for taking the time to make a separate meal for me when I’m being picky, and thank you for being someone I can always confide in.

To Pa: One of the things I admire the most about you is your encouragement and dedication. You always encourage me to do things even when I don’t think I can. Soccer has always been your passion, and I remember how excited you were when I wanted to join again after quitting in elementary. I’m really grateful for all the time and effort you put into helping me. Thank you for driving me two hours for practice, buying me expensive gear, and training me and my brothers yourself every weekend even though I ended up quitting.

I appreciate how you always work hard to buy me everything I want and need. When I was younger, I remember you would always buy me a new Barbie doll every time we went into a store, just to see me happy. You’ve always shown your love through generosity and care, constantly giving without expecting anything in return. Its never been about how much something costs, but about putting us first. You’ve shown this through small moments, like when you come home from work and bring us a sweet treat because you were thinking of us. No matter how tired you are, you always make time when it comes to family. For instance, when we watch movies together and you end up falling asleep midway. You taught me the importance of showing up for those you love, which is something I’ll always treasure. Thank you for being someone I can look up to and always rely on.

My Running Life Isaac Perez

Running for me has been life-changing. I first started running when I was in middle school. At first I didn’t like running, but I had to for P.E., so I did.

Over time I started getting used to running, and I loved competing. I used to race my friends and see who could finish everything fast. Then in high school I continued running. I only ever ran for P.E. I didn’t run on my own time, it was just for P.E. But then in my sophomore year someone recommended me to join a running sport because I was fast and consistent.

So I decided to join track and field. The first few weeks of practice were hell; it was on another level compared to running in P.E. I could handle it, though, and got used to it. I became better at running than I already was.

My passion and love for running grew even more, and I tried even harder.

I regret not joining track sooner because I could’ve been faster and more experienced.

The first race I was nervous and scared because I was racing against other fast people. They called my heat, and I went on my blocks practice 2 times, then I was ready. The starter asked if everyone was ready and then proceeded to call the race. On your mark, get set, go! Boom, I’m off the blocks and start running. I was first, but then I got hawked down. That’s when I realized I wasn’t focused. Over time I didn’t feel nervous; the races became fun, and the pressure was gone. I joined cross country; I expected it to be way easier than track and field. It was more about endurance and longer distances, like 3-miles or 5k. I was a sprinter, but I had good endurance, so I wasn’t worried about running. The first race I had, it felt like I was running forever; the hills kept coming.

It was a whole different sport and wasn’t the same. I got through it though I got stronger. I felt like cross country was all mental. It depends on how badly you wanted to win or get a new record.That’s what kept me going and now I go running on my own. I sometimes run three or four miles or more. Running has helped me a lot and I plan to continue running for the rest of my life. I didn’t know how good at running I was until I tried.

Isaac is a student athlete who loves running, does cross country and track & field, keeps trying to break his own records, doesn’t give up, and is a very determined person in the future he hopes to be in the military.

Why is Soccer So Popular?

Pedro

Soccer teaches teamwork and preparation for me and my teammates and for other kids so they can learn responsibility, patience, timing and most of all good sportsmanship. It helped me with my team to be ready for the Thanksgiving tournament at Burbank. Me and my teammates reached the finals but we sadly lost the tournament because we didn’t communicate together as a team.

The game fosters deep emotional connections and rivalries uniting communities and nations through shared passion, creating a universal language that breaks down cultural barriers. My experience in soccer is good because I practice almost everyday when I can. I want to be good and great on the field with my teammates. This game makes you emotional because whenever I went to a different tournament in Las Vegas, me and my teammates made it to the finals. We lost the tournament because some of our players were hurt and they couldn’t continue playing.

Soccer is popular because a lot of people around the world play soccer and they enjoy playing with their family. Around the world 240 to 270 million people play soccer in different countries. When I play soccer for my school team and club we go to different schools and soccer fields to play. For example when I was playing for my school team I remembered we went to Hollywood and I sent a kid flying. Soccer changed how I played on the field with my teammates because I have been playing soccer since I was six years old and it has changed me throughout my life. It made me happy.

Becoming Johnny Macario

Growing up I was a very sociable kid who was very loud and talkative.

I wanted to be a vet because I loved animals. I still do love animals however that just is not who I wanna become anymore. I even used to play for this little soccer club at macarthur park mind you now I don’t even like soccer. I feel like as life went on I did a whole 180 on myself.

The person who I am now is nowhere near the kid I used to be. It’s so odd to me how drastically growing up has changed me. For an assignment in fifth grade I once wrote how I hated loud music and how I wanted to be part of the army. Now I love loud music and music means a lot to me. It has helped me out in my darkest moments. Without music who knows what would have become of me. As for joining the Army, the thought of that doesn’t cross my mind at all anymore.

Like during middle school I started to bloom as one would call it. I ended up picking hobbies such as skating, weight lifting, and volleyball. I started to skate because of my older brother. My brother used to skate a lot with his friends in the past, making it look cool to me. But as he grew up he also started to stop. So once he stopped I started because he gave me his skateboard. Sadly nothing ever lasts forever but as I grew up I stopped skating. I’m not saying I don’t like it anymore, just lack of time.

Thankfully I started to love to workout, funny enough the reason for that was my older brother again. As I’m writing this I am starting to realize how much of a bigger impact my older brother had on me than I ever thought. In regards to volleyball I picked it up on my own taking interest in the sport around 8th grade.

High school has been the best and worst time of my life. Where do I even start? I mean my freshman year was a very messy year. It wasn’t the worst because as a freshman I passed all my classes with A’s and I promised myself to keep getting all A’s and that I would only take A’s.

So I really was proud of myself and wanted to keep it up, thankfully I did. The only bad/messy thing that happened that year was a relation-

ship that ended weirdly. Regardless of it I ended up being alone for the rest of my freshman year but I took it as a learning experience and since been trying to better myself. As for my sophomore year I would say it was the worst year. I ended up making so many mistakes and bad choices and I even broke the promise I made to myself. I ended up slacking off and letting my grades drop, making me realize how far I had let myself go. Everything that happened in my sophomore year was bad but even if it was, I’m choosing to take it as a learning experience and to truly learn to never make the same mistake again. I once heard a Rocky Balboa quote:”It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” I feel like that quote has made me think so differently. So I choose to improve and be better. Junior year has been okay overall.

Regardless, I am happy and grateful for all the good people I met in my time at school.

The best thing that happened from changing throughout time is that I got to understand myself, what I like and don’t like. Even with that said as I grow up I wanna try new stuff, put myself out there and make new memories.

Mentality Roldan Gonzalez

I hate that I am always trying to change but I don’t have the right mindset. But having a mentality like the greatest soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo means always working hard through discipline, focus. And why I am saying that Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest soccer player is because of his success everywhere he played. He has won many titles in Spain, England, and Italy. Even in the Champions League he won five UCLs and came out to be top scorer with 140 goals, and what makes him different from others is his mentality. He would be training nonstop, with discipline He would train harder than most of the players, he would stay and practice extra, even after the team session would be over. His success shows that effort does matter more than talent itself. So I try to improve myself by setting goals and staying committed even when I don’t want to, instead of giving up or making mistakes I would use them as motivation or to do better.

Having this mindset means that I can believe in myself, and be able to push past my limits. By being able to follow some examples of Cristiano Ronaldo I can continue growing and becoming a better version of myself and not focusing on others.

It’s Not Too Late Alexander Hernandez

Dreams, oh how many times our dreams have changed over these years. I had a dream to be a soccer player once but… it’s a dream I gave up long ago but there is no need to worry too much. I’ve given up because of how my teammates play. They always hog the ball and only think of scoring for themselves and I gave up on them because everyone else is doing the same except for me. Though it does hurt to leave that dream go, one you were so passionate about but lost through others not able to see opportunities you’ve created. But this isn’t the only dream I should chase, there is always another option, another dream to pursue.

You shouldn’t chase after one dream.

You should always make another.

Though it hurts to lose the old.

There is always another to begin anew.

There is always another to pursue.

There is always a way to find it.

Now I have a dream to become a 2D animator. Seeing how fluid the animations are from others’ creations had got me interested. Animations like Demon Slayer with fluid animations, Bluelock with some explosive scenes, and some fan animations online with exaggerated effects. So I decided to draw a character that I like in a show and it turns out that I have a natural talent for drawing that even my friends were surprised by, because my friends can also draw and know when drawings look good and it was my first time drawing something so complex. They were SO impressed that they started to show everyone in class and some of them wanted to keep my drawing but all of that just made me embarrassed with all the compliments I got for my drawing. Then suddenly I realized that the stage was set and that my future has changed. Now I have a new dream to pursue and one that I can truly achieve.

This new dream of mine has got me intrigued Though it was hard to find.

For My Brother Esmeralda Lacan Dear Brother, I don’t say this enough, but I’m really grateful to call you my brother.

When you get home I get happy because I would rarely see you at home. You were apart from us for a little while, there was someone who would constantly pull you away from us. It was not because I was jealous or not letting you live “happy” but because they were taking you down the wrong path and I was scared that you would forget about us and leave us for someone who wasn’t good for you.

I don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed to feel this close towards you because you are always there for me when I need you. You support me in what I want to achieve, you never judge me in what I want but help me get there. You are the only person I truly trust with my heart, I feel like whenever I’m talking to you I feel heard, I feel like you understand me in so many ways no other person can and you try to help me in your own ways. I’m glad you really are my brother because you’ve given me a lot of things and not only because you buy me stuff I want but because when I need something, you are always there. I remember when we celebrated New Years at church and we were all happy and dancing but once the time hit 12:00 you came to me and hugged me really tight and told me “I’m sorry I wasn’t there enough with you, you helped me a lot getting closer to God and this year. We need to get closer to God, and just know that I’m always here to support you in anything…” You had said more but as soon as you told me I started crying in your arms, that’s the moment I knew you truly did care about me, and that’s when I knew I had you back as a brother so I’m glad you’re able to be here more with us.

I look up to you, I’ve seen you overcome hard obstacles in your life.

When other people fall and give up, you get right back at your feet and overcome those challenges given to you. You don’t give up, instead you find solutions to everything. I’ve seen you grow and change through your actions and I’ve seen you change to a better person.

I’ve learned that no one becomes who they are alone. When I think about the person I am today I don’t just see myself, I see my parents, my siblings, my friends, and one other person who has loved me through my growth. It wasn’t until I began to grow that I started to understand how much of who I am comes from them, every part of my identity has been shaped by people who have walked with me through different stages of my life and I realize now, I am made of shared memories, and lessons passed down from them. For the longest time I never realized how the people around me were shaping who I am today.

Before anyone else had the chance to influence who I would become today, my parents were the first to shape my values and beliefs. “No hagas eso.” “Hechale ganas flaka.” “Ten el futuro que nosotros no tuvimos.” Growing up I never realized how much my parents were doing for me until I got older. My dad, the man of the house, the man who has influenced me through his guidance and examples. The man who I have seen everyday since I was born, goes to work and comes back tired, the man who lost his father but never forgot to be one. He taught me the value of hard work and responsibility by showing up everyday and doing what needed to be done, even if it wasn’t easy.

If my dad was the strength of my family, my mom was the heart. In her own way my mom shaped me just as deeply from always being a major source of comfort and strength in my life to being the head of the house. My mom always showed her love through small but meaningful actions like listening to me when I needed to get something off my chest, reassuring me when I doubted myself, and always putting her family first. Every single day I have admired the strong woman my mom turned out to be even without a mom. From seeing her cook, clean, and emotionally support our family, I have learned pa-

All my life I have watched my parents put our family first even when it meant personal sacrifice, seeing their commitment to me and our family taught me that love may not always be loud but can be shown through effort and patience.

Gracias Ma, Gracias Pa. As important as that foundation is, my growth did not stop there. My little sister influenced how I learned to interact, communicate, and grow alongside someone else, not as a friend but as a partner for life.

For 14 years of my life I was an only child and had never experienced what it felt to have a sibling until my sister was born. I will always remember the first time I held her in my arms feeling so nervous yet so proud of the amount of responsibility placed in my arms. She’s now two and simple moments like holding her, helping feed her, playing with her, or watching her sleep have made me realize how much responsibility and love comes with being an older sibling. As I watch her grow I am reminded that I will someday be someone she looks up to and that fills me with purpose. Although my little sister can’t speak yet she’s taught me that love can exist without words. Mi Ashley, mi luz en la oscuridad, mi hermanita por siempre.

In addition to my family my world became much larger outside of home, as I grew older friendships formed. My friends encouraged me to try new things such as food, sports, places, and even bigger goals. I remember feeling nervous the first time I had stepped into something unfamiliar, but having my friends beside me made me feel secure enough to try. My friends have changed overtime from pre-k all the way to high school and each stage of my life brought new people who left lasting memories. I think about the days we spent together laughing during lunch, studying together before tests we knew we would fail, and supporting each other during stressful moments.

“It’s okay.” “You got that.” I am grateful for the friends I have met, who continue to support me and shape who I am. Through the shared experiences, laughter, and support I’ve found comfort in knowing I’m not alone and they’ve taught me the importance of trust and loyalty.

Among all the relationships that shaped me, one taught me the true meaning of vulnerability, patience, and growth. Someone important changed how I viewed myself, he helped me see my worth during moments that I had doubted myself. I remember times I felt overwhelmed and unsure of myself and he never failed to remind me, “Setbacks are signs of improvement,” helping me believe my struggles and mistakes did not define me. He showed me patience and understanding didn’t just come from words but also came through actions. He listened to me when I needed to talk and stood by me when I felt lost. He taught me that I was worthy of love simply by being me. With him I could understand what it felt to not be so self-centered, and with him I have learned how to grow without losing who l am. Being with him reminded me that my feelings and opinions mattered and all I ever needed was patience. He showed me that being so vulnerable wasn’t something to fear after all, and that loving myself was just as important as loving someone else.

When you go to school, the items you will need to have will be: notebook, backpack, eraser, and arguably the most important. A pencil.

Entering elementary school I was always prepared with the utensils I needed for school. That was until the 3rd grade. My writing was always on point and I never made any grammar errors nor wrong use of punctuations with the use of my pencil. Every hand raised by me was a world full of confidence. I felt like I was on top of the world because of my utensils helping me for school. Especially my pencil.

After school I would run straight home with my pencil and keep using it when I had arrived.

Although some days my pencil was on point and unique, there would be days where I couldn’t find it. It would have rolled away some days but eventually would return. That was until one day going into 3rd grade I had lost my pencil but it was different this time. This time I never found it.

I entered 3rd grade nevertheless with a trusty pen because of my lost pencil. When I arrived I would look around and see everyone have a pencil except for me. I was the only one with a pen. Since then I would get in trouble because of my usage of pen for all my assignments.

My teachers would say how I am not allowed to use a pen for any of my assignments or use it in general because it’s erasable. I would be lying if I said I don’t get in trouble for writing with a pen now. At first I was disagreeing with them because my philosophy is that it still gave me a way to write and do my work. Until I would slowly realize I’d make mistakes and anger myself with not being able to fix it because of the non useless ink.

Being the only individual in the room with only a pen made me feel so out of place. I would progressively lose the confidence I once had. I felt as if I had committed a sin and paid the price for it. As days would pass by, I would slowly realize how angry I would get and only show anger towards everything. Continuously becoming short tempered.

Although it was anger I was only projecting, it wasn’t anger I was feeling. It was the loneliness I felt and the embarrassment it was to be the only one with a pen. Some days my pen would be busy so I wouldn’t have anything to write with and I couldn’t do anything about it, my pencil was gone. My pen would always work hard for me while I couldn’t do anything about it. I would sometimes ponder how it would be if I still had a pencil so my pen wouldn’t overwork themselves.

When I would be home I’d ask my mom, “When will my pencil come back?” or if she’ll ever find my pencil. She’d tell me that it’s time to stop depending on my pencil when that was one of my most valuable items I had ever had.

As much as I wanted to tell my mom she was wrong, I waited seconds that would then turn into minutes, hours, days, and months of waiting. Until the most heart-tearing-to-pieces of an assignment was announced by my teacher. My teacher had announced that we will be making a card for our pencils the following day. My heart sank to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. After school I ran at lightning speed to my sister crying like a waterfall, telling her how I’m scared and sad about being the only one with a pen and not a pencil. She would proceed to tell me the most basic thing to say but would later find out that it’ll help me overcome my fear and sadness. The next day I told my teacher the same words my sister told me to say. “I don’t have a pencil but only a pen.” “Well make the card for your pen because they also are your pencil and pen in one,” my teacher said. She proceeded to say “I also grew up without a pencil and only a pen but it still felt the same as every other pencil in the world.”

Right there and then I realized I wasn’t lonely. I wasn’t the only one with just a pen. I also then realized that it will be okay with just my pen next to me and I shouldn’t be embarrassed by it. With no pencil. As years would pass by, I found out that I wasn’t the only one in that position and everyone who is should also know they aren’t by themselves.

My pen was always there for me nevertheless. No matter the occasion. Whether it be my school dance on two hours of rest. My pen would still manage to attend. Or it be me having trouble with math, my pen would try to help me figure it out. Sometimes we will both be learning something at the same time. My pen sacrificed so much for me and my family. They never stopped working just to satisfy my hunger and stay put in warm new clothes. My pen still managed to be present.

If you ask me, I wouldn’t switch my pen for the world. I love my pen and forever will. My pen is everything in one and wouldn’t want to grow up any differently. My philosophy is now different. You don’t need a pencil and a pen to have a good life. As long as you have either one, you’ll be perfectly fine. Thank you mom!

During the time he is writing this book, he is in the second semester of his junior year in high school. He has “basic” hobbies that he does when not writing this book. They play baseball, study, spend time with family and friends, and watch fantasy movies.

Briseida Elias Our TV is special. After spending years mounted to the same dark corner of our living room, it’s become family. Our TV has heard the head-splitting roars that come from flushed red faces boiling with anger. Listening in on our household arguments ranging from financial disputes to emotional conflict. But it also witnesses the calm and tranquil atmosphere present during an ordinary day. The low - hummmmmmm - coming from the refrigerator, the casual, “How was your day?” Our TV feels everything. Feeling the domestic ambiance of a loving family and the warmth that it comes with. Our TV takes in the devastating news our country is currently in, broadcasting the pleas and cries made by families being torn apart, spreading the arrogant words of our incompetent president. “I’m not a dictator.” he says, but he’s the one stripping America’s Citizens of affordable healthcare, using that money towards ICE whose current goal seems to be destroying families. Even so, our TV keeps playing the diverting but hilarious shows we’ve known to make our stomachs hurt from laughter, experiencing just how quick emotions can shift from desperation and fear to obliviousness. Our TV continues to experience the negative that comes with the positive, and that makes it family. Our TV is special.

A Journey of Faith Alexis Guox

Some people think that believing in God and being able to go to heaven means you must go to church and participate in your community but honestly, I don’t think you have to do all that in order to be accepted by Christ. I myself am not Christian nor am I baptized but I 100% believe in God which has significantly changed my life. Each night, I pray and thank him for the blessed days he has provided me with which has taught me to be more grateful and not take anything for granted as anything could happen in life.

Whenever I’m struggling with anything, I always come to him and talk to him to seek guidance. For instance, whenever I struggle with declining grades, I make sure to pray to him because school can make me stressed at times which can start to become harmful. As a result, other things in my life could potentially begin to stress me out even more as well so praying helps me receive clarity and strength to be able to move forward and overcome these obstacles.

And honestly, I do believe that whenever you need guidance, you should always seek God because blessings have happened to me.

By “blessings”, I don’t mean miracles but more so as in good things that happen. Some examples would be being able to spend time with family during holidays/events, eating good food, receiving top-notch grades, being able to wake up everyday, being healthy, etc. I call even little things “blessings” because I know people can have it worse which is why I’m grateful to be able to experience all of it.

But some people just pray to him whenever they’re struggling and don’t thank him for the great things they have received afterwards and to be honest, I think that’s just wrong. Of course they won’t get punished or anything of that nature, but I just believe it’s important to be thankful for what happens because not everyone has the same opportunities as others.

I’ve learned that in order to be connected with God, you must build an actual relationship with him and not just “use” him in a selfish way. Al-

though I’m not super religious like many others, believing in him with all my faith has inspired me to believe that the true connection comes from your heart as that’s how you can actually connect with him.

Alexis is a calm and creative person whose hobbies are spending time with family, hanging out with friends, being in bed and as well as eating food he enjoys. One thing he prioritizes in life is to always have peace and balance because he hates how harmful stress can be.

To my parents, my grandmother, and my siblings: First of all, I thank God, who sustains me, fills every aspect of my life, and is always with me. One of the experiences I had with Him was the process I went through to get to know Him. At first, I didn’t want to know about Him; I refused to go to church, but I went through many bad things while I was away from Him. One day I went to church, tired of everything that was happening to me, and that’s when I realized that I couldn’t live without God and that He gave His life for me, and my purpose was to be an instrument for Him. I am also grateful to my mother for all her support. Mom, I love you very much. I am proud of all the effort you make for us, for knowing how to face things and not give up. And to my grandmother, who has been like my second mother, for taking care of me from the very first minute of my life,To my rebellious little brother, whom I love very much and who changed my life from the day I found out my mom was pregnant, I cried because I was going to stop being the spoiled one, but then I accepted it and understood that you were a blessing, and now you’re the best thing that could have happened to me, even though we fight every day.

Listening to music is an important part of my life. Being able to listen to people’s stories in a short amount of time, and the way their lyrics are in rhythm with the beat, makes it so interesting. Every little detail in the song matters, like the BPM, the way they talk, the message they’re trying to convey. I believe you can learn many things about someone from the songs they like. Whenever I listen to new music, I always pay attention to the instrumentals first. Then, on the second listen, I would focus on the lyrics and try to figure out the meaning, then gradually figure out the bigger picture. The five songs that mean something to me and helped me to understand how things are in the world are “Don’t Cry” by J DILLA, “Not Much” by Hit-Boy & The Alchemist (feat. Boldy James), “Walk in Faith” by Hit-Boy & The Alchemist, “Keep My Spirit Alive (PT.2)” by Kanye West (feat. KayCyy, Westside Gunn & Conway the Machine), and “Welcome to the States” by Benny the Butcher.

“Don’t Cry” by J DILLA: J Dilla, also known as James Dewitt Yanecy, was a producer and rapper. He was diagnosed with Lupus and Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP). Yanecy’s final album is called Donuts. Don’t Cry samples a song called “I Can’t Stand (To See You Cry).” This song was specifically made for his mother, Ma Dukes.

The song tells her not to cry when he passes away due to his diagnosis. This song means a lot to me because it shows how much he loved his mother, and how he was still looking after her even during his final days. It showed me what real love looks like. This song is an emotional roller coaster. The song is so good that it makes you feel happy, which was his point, so that his mother wouldn’t feel sad. When you know the meaning of the song while listening to it, it makes you feel differently.

“Not Much” by Hit-Boy & The Alchemist (feat. Boldy James): This song made me realize that being successful doesn’t fix everything you’ve been through. One of the most interesting lyrics in this song is “mix

victory with the trauma.” This tells me that if you win something or are successful, it won’t fully get rid of your bad experience, but it will just be there next to it. This lyric made me realize why many successful people say they still feel empty. When I would hear successful people saying they feel empty, I wouldn’t be able to understand because if I had the money and success, I would be happy. But that wouldn’t be the case since I didn’t experience what they had to deal with. Later on in the song, Boldy James says, “Was stuck in the hood way longer than I was rich.” This helped me to understand the earlier lyrics and helped me to better grasp why people still feel empty even though they have many things. It’s because the trauma had more time to settle in than the rewards they received later in life.

“Walk In Faith” byHit-Boy & The Alchemist: One of my favorite lines in this song was by The Alchemist, where he says, “everything you see started from as a thought ‘til it got put in action”. This means a lot to me because I always want to do something, but then I second-guess myself and don’t do it. For example, when a teacher asks a question, and I know the answer, but I don’t want to answer it due to the fear of being wrong. The Alchemist later says, “You don’t need to know how to build a rocket to understand the science”. I would only answer the questions the teacher asked when I knew it one hundred percent.

This lyric made me understand that you don’t have to understand everything perfectly to take action, and knowing what you know is sometimes enough.

“Keep My Spirit Alive (Pt. 2)” by Kanye West (feat. KayCyy, Westside Gunn & Conway the Machine): This song is on Kanye West’s album Donda, which is named after his mother, who passed away in 2007.

The song starts with KayCyy saying, “You can take it all, but the lord on my side, The Spirit won’t die”. This talks about how you can take away possessions from someone, but not someone they have faith in. Hearing this made me think about how I would react if I let go of my possessions; would I still be able to have fun? When KayCyy says “but the Lord is on my side,” it made me realize that having faith and connections with family, friends, pets, or anyone is more important than my possessions. Later on in the song, Conway the Machine talks about the aftermath when he got shot in the head, neck, and shoulder in 2012, which left him with Bell’s Palsy. Conway says, “Doctor said I wouldn’t walk no more, now I stand, Then I ran, here I am, machine.”

This is probably my favorite lyric of all time, because of the message.

Conway did what was believed to be impossible. When I hear this, I

think about when I’m about to race, I usually believe that I can’t do it, and what if I didn’t put enough effort in. If I put the work in like how Conway did to recover, I shouldn’t worry because nothing is impossible.

“Welcome to The States” by Benny The Butcher: Benny released this song to talk about the shooting that happened at Tops Friendly Markets in 2022 in his hometown of Buffalo. He starts the song off with “Welcome to the States, where we dyin’ of our skin color and race.” I recently found this song, and my first thought was what’s been happening with ICE. There have been many incidents with ICE where they are most likely to target people with darker skin tones and accents without real probable cause. Many U.S. citizens might be scared to go outside because they might get harassed by ICE just because of their skin color, which they can’t control or do anything about. The next line, Benny says, “Ideologies formed of hate, now the grocery stores ain’t safe.” When Benny says that, this emphasizes the fact that because people are scared to even go outside, like a grocery store, which is supposed to be a place to get food and feel safe, not a place to be cautious and scared of being hurt. Benny also says, “‘Cause the suits that vote on these laws don’t deal with our challenges.” He says the lawmakers often make laws for people without actually experiencing them, which I believe is a bad thing. I say this because lawmakers might just make a law just to get it over with, and not to actually fix the root of the problem. When I first heard this, it immediately clicked on why many people who aren’t being affected by ICE believe ICE is doing a great thing. They just believe what they want to see, such as that ICE is only going after criminals. If they experienced what people had to endure, they would know that isn’t the case. After listening to this song, it made it clear that you should listen to the people who have been affected by these issues, not just what you see.

The story is about the school change I experienced last year. I was studying at a school in East Los Angeles, and I had to move to a new school because I moved to a different area. They placed me in a new school in downtown Los Angeles. The school is nice and big, just like the other one. What I like most is that it’s closer to my house, but I had already gotten used to the old school; all my friends and acquaintances were there. But this one is fine too. The good thing is that I also met new people, and I’m going to finish high school, and I’ll do it at the new school. I also hope that everything will be easier for the rest of the year. When I used to go to the old school, I would take the train and the bus with a friend. It took me about an hour to get there, but it was fun because we would hang out afterward. The only bad thing was that sometimes we would get into trouble because of him, but it didn’t matter. I had some issues with another classmate—specifically because of his girlfriend. But ultimately, it didn’t matter, because I feel good at this new school—even if I don’t have any close friends here (since there aren’t really any *friends* around, just acquaintances).

When I was in 7th grade I had friends who skateboarded every time we got out of school; they would go to a park to skate. They asked me if I wanted to go but I didn’t have a skateboard. So I decided to buy a skateboard that was a design of a panther and try learning tricks on it. A few weeks ago they asked me again if I wanted to skate with them. I told them that I bought a skateboard so I started to hang out with them.They taught me how to use the skateboard. They told me to have my right leg on the skateboard and left leg on the ground.

I was getting comfortable using it. I went to a small park to practice my skill on the skateboard, do some ollies or kickflips. Then the next day I went to hang out with my friends. We went to get pizza and after that we went to go skate. It was a fun day.

5) Tuesday After a dreadful Monday, a regular, mundane Tuesday is all I expect.

On Tuesdays I am still mourning my weekend, however the thought slowly moves into the back of my mind where it disappears for 2 days. I brace myself for a week full of schoolwork, practice, and house chores. Tuesday sets the tone for the week. A good day full of great work means a great week is up ahead, but, if my tuesday is grim and sluggish, fog surrounds the days ahead.

4) Thursday After working for most of the week the fog begins to clear. The weekend is two days away and Friday is on its way. Thursday can still be a relatively slow day. With my most demanding classes being on Thursday, namely AP physics, the day can take a toll on me. The only redeeming quality of Thursday is the anticipation of Friday.

3) Sunday Sunday is good but not great. After going to sleep late on Saturday night, I wake up at around ten or eleven AM feeling rested and carefree, afterall I have nothing to do but relax. Sunday feels amazing up until about four PM when I realize that I need to wake up early and go to school tomorrow. The simple realization that Saturday night is in the past, and I only have 6 hours left before I need to be in bed ready for Monday.

2) Friday There is no greater feeling than almost being at the end of a goal and reaping the rewards of your hard work. Friday arrives and I make sure to take advantage of the day. Any extra work that should be done over the weekend is finished at school in order to free up the rest of the day. After school ends it feels as if the shackles on my ankles have been unlocked, I exit the school premises and I am greeted by the warm, bright yellow California sun. After a whole boring week it

feels as if I have emerged from a dark dusty basement where I was held captive. The rest of the day is mine and I am free to do whatever I want.

1) Saturday SATURDAY IS THE GOAT. There is absolutely nothing to do which I don’t like. Go out to dinner, spend the day in, it doesn’t matter, because on a saturday, I do whatever I want to do and that’s it.

Exploring the World With Hopes and Dreams Isaias Ayala

Exploring the world is not just about going from one place to another, it’s a chance to hope and dream. As I enter new places, I start dreaming of who I could become braver, more curious, and more accepting of change. Hope is born in these moments, by the idea that there is always more to find.

Dreaming is a natural outcome of exploration. Seeing new cultures, new places, and new ways of living changes the way I think about my future that will one day come. The world is big, but somehow intimate, and my dreams will grow with the world. dreaming of things I never considered before, inspired by the people I meet and the stories hearing along the way.

As I hope to explore the world, I learn that hope and dreams are not places that I arrive at, they are companions that go with me, changing with me, shaped by every experience and every lesson. In my exploration of the world, I hope to learn that dreaming of new things is not running away from reality but understanding it more deeply and believing that something better is always possible.

Isaias is just a chill guy that wishes the best for everyone and wishes to explore what the world has to offer.

Things I Do When I’m Bored Francisca M.

The first thing I do when I am bored at home or anywhere is playing volleyball. I love playing volleyball and spending time with friends while playing. I feel like volleyball helps me distract myself instead of being at home on my phone doing nothing. I would rather go have fun and joke around with my friends playing volleyball. Playing this sport helps me relax and get away from problems I have at home or at school or anywhere. Volleyball is one of my sports that has helped me with my physical and mental state. I remember when my friends and I would play together and we would drop the ball and end up laughing with each other all the time. My friends always help me when I’m having a bad day. They always find a way to make me laugh and forget why I was mad or sad.

Another thing I do when I am bored is drawing. I love drawing so much. I have learned how to draw in many ways like using charcoal, finger painting, paint, pencil, shadow drawing, etc. I really enjoy drawing flowers or little drawings. I like going on youtube and just drawing big flowers or drawing little figures. I’ve painted some little landscapes to show how I feel or just an imaginary space I like to be in. I’ve been noticing lately that I really love drawing mountains with trees and the sky like something you would find only somewhere out of this world.

Drawing has helped me a lot with my mental state because it helps me draw out when I feel sad, mad, or happy. It helps me relax and soothe my mind instead of being stuck on the phone all day long.

A third thing I do for fun or when I am bored is reading books while listening to music. I really like reading books because I feel like it helps me relax my brain and helps me just drift away from sound around me. I feel like listening to music while reading books helps me relax in a certain way. It helps me just focus on what I am reading and just soothes me as well. A book I have read that has really caught my attention is named, “Girl in Pieces” by Kathleen Glasgow. This book really opens my mind and is very interesting to read. This book is

mainly about healing and wanting to become small. Another book I have read is “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” by Rick Riordan. This book I find very adventurous and exciting. I’ve seen the movie and read the books which are very fun to read.

Last but not least, something I do for fun is cook food with my mom. I really like cooking with my mom because it shows our bond and how we have a good connection together. I really like cooking because it’s very interesting how my mom cooks and how recipes have different tastes. I am getting better at cooking day by day because I mostly cook now when my mom isn’t around to cook. I remember when I was cooking beans on the stove and I kind of forgot to add water and ended up burning the beans. It was very bad because I got scolded for not paying attention while cooking but from there on I learned to be patient and pay attention to what I am doing instead of wandering off. I’m glad I took the opportunity to learn how to cook rather than not learning because there are very few people who know how to cook.

The Smashing Machine Neftali M.

Films are something I really like and are also something I would like to pursue when I grow up.

My favorite film of 2025 was The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and came out on October 3, 2025. It’s a film based on a documentary that came out in 2002 under the same name.

I saw The Smashing Machine with my friends a couple of weeks after it came out. I heard so many good things about the film but I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it because it was starring The Rock. Recently I haven’t heard too many good things about him as an actor based off of his most recent films, so I didn’t really have too high of an expectation of it being good. The film was two hours long, and I enjoyed every minute of it .

The Smashing Machine was about a UFC fighter, Mark Kerr, and it was based heavily off the documentary. The film was about his time as a MMA fighter and his struggles with addiction to opioids, and how it affected him to the point of hospitalization. It affected his career, him, and especially his relationship with his girlfriend Dawn Staples played

by Emily blunt.his addictions ultimately leads him to rehab, when he returns he wants to be better than he was before, but he wants to do it right this time, I really like this film because of how it shows a weak side of him where he shows emotions, how he feels, how it affects him, there’s a scene in the movie of him just crying after ending up in the hospital.

He knows that what he was doing wasn’t right but it helped him feel better and not feel pain. I feel like this is a very common thing that people experience. Doing something that isn’t good for you or holding onto things to feel good even if it doesn’t help you in any way or it being bad for you. This scene in the movie was really good, as well as the music.

The cinematography in the movie was amazing. A scene I especially like is a scene where they are at a fair, there’s a ride that Dawn wants to ride but Mark doesn’t, and we see both of their sides, Dawn on the ride, and Mark just watching. It shows how different they both are, and it’s one of the early scenes showing how incompatible they are, that it doesn’t matter how much they love each other, it most likely would never work out. Dawn’s a very fun and adventurous person while Mark doesn’t take risks and plays it safe.

Even though it’s a recent film I really enjoyed it and it is one of my top favorite movies. If you are someone who enjoys dramatic action movies I would recommend to watch it, and even if you’re not I think this movie is worth watching at least once.

Top Five Things I Do When I’m Bored 1. Listening to Music • Music is something people really love, as its melodies help some of us concentrate and keep us calm. I listen to it when I’m bored because the music makes me want to stand up and actually do stuff around the house. Music is like an energizer boost that hypnotizes me away from my laziness and boredom.

While listening to music it’s like time passes by quickly, feeling like I’m the flash finishing my chores speeding through them.

For me, one song that makes me feel energized is called “Liars and Players” by Asal. This song makes me feel like I’m at a party since it’s an upbeat song.

2.Reading • Mangas are the only books that I finish in one or two days and like to read. Ever since the library organized their manga in the corner I go there to find new series to read after finishing a recent series. Hopefully by the end of my senior year I have at least finished 15 series or more. It’s funny to me that we have to read manga starting from right to left, although it does help “enhance cognitive flexibility.” One of the mangas I am reading right now that I really enjoy is “Cirque Du Freak” by Darren Shan. This is about a boy who transforms into a half vampire and joins a circus with “freaks.” It means that there are a bunch of strange creatures that we don’t usually see. This manga is like wind flipping the pages meaning that the story is good enough to keep reading.

3. Playing Games • I love playing games, especially Roblox. It’s more fun when playing with friends. Sometimes there are times where some friends don’t have time to play so being alone is pretty boring.

I usually play Flee The Facility in roblox where the game is basically freeze tag. There is a beast which is the tagger but this

character has a hammer to hit people with it. Once a person is hit theyŕe suppsode to rope them and put the other person in a tube. The others who aren’t the beast must take the person out the tube so they don’t freeze while also trying to hack computers. Once they hack the computers they must open the exit and escape before the beast freezes all of them. It’s pretty exciting because you never know when the beast will appear or get you, the anticipation builds up excitement.

4. Roller Sports • Ever since I found out that roller sports is a thing, I found it very interesting, so whenever I have the chance I would always practice new roller sports. Maybe in the future I can become a professional and compete in the Olympics or any competition. It’s a new thing I can learn and believe that learning how to do this sport can help in the future. I believe that the first roller sport I ever learned is the bicycle. It was fun because it was my dad who taught me how to ride one and it was one of the happiest memories I have with my dad. We would always go down to the parking lot and practice every day after he comes back from work. It’s a very memorable childhood memory I had.

5. Youtube • I really love to watch youtube since there are some videos about horror or “scary things caught on camera.” This is funny to watch when I’m bored because it makes me laugh when I see that some of the videos might be edited to look like there is something scary happening. Even in the mornings while being half asleep I tend to watch these videos to wake me up. When I keep watching these videos, more keep appearing in my recommended videos which I don’t really like. I might search up new videos to watch but I don’t know what it will be yet, maybe baking videos so I could learn it as a hobby. These new hobbies will probably get rid of my boredom I have everyday and I can’t wait to try new things in the future.

This is a girl who gets bored really easily, although the thing she is doing seems pretty fun to others. She likes reading manga, trying new roller sports, drawing, and playing rhythm games.

The brightest highlights in life are memories that come and go like quick flashes. Everyone has their own special moments in their lives.

Some people just look forward to what’s ahead while others like to soak in on what has gone by. These memories can be so cherished that it gives you a desperate feeling of nostalgia wanting to experience said moments again and again. My golden hour moments always have me thinking that I want these specific memories that I keep reminiscing to have lasted longer. One of these memories for me has to be when I get to be anywhere outside. The feeling of the wind, the feeling of the sun mimicking a warm blanket from the sun rays. Being able to analyze my surroundings, being able to explore these places with the right people.

When I get to go to a place that is an open field or even the beach I like to look around well. One memory I like to keep revisiting is when I went on a hike near the beach. That was one of my brightest highlights because when I think about the road trip I think about the mountains that I passed by seeing such an open space gives me a breather from being surrounded by a busy, overwhelming city. I like to imagine that I can hear everything so clearly when I’m in an open area. Being able to see the flowers that grow at any corner, seeing how smoothly trees move, and the way birds sing, at a place not a lot of people are at.

Sometimes these memories that I have come when I’m even listening to music or just simply zoning out. Another memory I always come back to is when I went on a road trip to Bakersfield to see friends and hang out at a river. I always like coming back to that moment. It’s something that I would like to live over and over again. The feeling of nostalgia of being with the right people and place. From experiencing this I learned that the most painful feeling is nostalgia.

The Final Surge Anikah Anchuelo

I believe in the notion that once the heart stops beating, the human brain will continue to stay conscious for seven minutes to replay your best and most important memories. This is due to the lack of oxygen which conducts high frequency electric surges into areas responsible for holding memories. As for the belief that, “your life will flash before your eyes,” I am a person that is convinced of this phenomenon. I know that my seven minutes will assemble them, the people I have loved and the people who have loved me the most. I will be able to recall their lessons, their love, their voices, all the comfort I need before fading from earth.

The first minute will present my father. The way his arms opened as I ran to him when he unexpectedly showed up to pick me up from school. The way I jumped into his arms after a hard day of being told to act unlike myself, to keep quiet, to stop being a bother. His words exclaimed, “I love you,” before we ended the conversation. The times when I couldn’t hold back my tears as he began saying, “ano ba nangyari?”The highfives we gave each other as he landed another corny joke. The thirty-minute car ride back to our apartment after dropping off my mom at work every friday, sitting down in a heated seat inside that van we named “blue” while we sang along to “Linger” by the Cranberries. I will remember the sacrifices he made for the family, working more hours than he rested, accepting any demanding job he could get, going back and forth from shift to shift, numerous tiring days and nights away from my mom. I will hear his tired yawns while I read books to him through our landline. “Bye Aika I have to go now, I’ll see you soon.”

The line will click.

My mom will come into the room, my second minute has come. She will neatly lay down my clothes for school the next morning. I will hear her say, “kumain ka na ta” while my stomach rumbles. My mother didn’t show much of her struggles, I very rarely saw her shed a tear. She is the type to love with actions rather than with words. I will recall the efforts she made for our school events, my hair white with baby powder as I wore her lensless glasses and grandma dress for the 100th day of school, the hairstyles she would create for crazy hair day, the ugly

sweaters she made for our yearly christmas dance. I will feel the heaviness lifted off my chest after seeing her in the crowd with her camera out as I received my awards. I will see the smile on her face as I clashed my cymbals together to create a “BANG” for my middle school culmination. I will see her big smile that lit up with every joke my dad cracked as she lightly slapped his shoulder. I will see her lethargic face as she comes home from work, and without complaints, she will still put a pan on the stove to make my siblings and I dinner. My mom will softly put the plates on the table as the smell of savory adobo filled the house.

She will sit next to me on the table My eldest sister, Gwen, my ate, as her knee sits close to her chest while the other dangles down. The way of sitting that I adapted to, the girl I copied and learned from. My mind will make out the wisdom that she enlightened me with. I can reminisce about the dark nights when she taught me checker plays from the chest board our dad gifted us with, her face illuminated from the small candle we kept. My ate, who kept me safe and nourished with her love and care. I saw right through her, the struggles she faced, the hurt she kept. I looked up to her like a second mother, I was too young to understand that she was just a kid as well. I will hear her voice shouting from the other room, “AIKAAAA COME HERE PLEASE!!” I will recall the stories she explained when my sister and I couldn’t fall asleep, “before you guys were born…”, “do you guys remember…”, “you guys weren’t here yet but…”. She often says the regrets she’s made throughout her life, “learn from me aika” I hear her voice echo as my third minute comes to an end.

While her voice fades I begin to hear a deep voice.

My kuya. My brother, Jan, always reminded me of a rock, tough and stable. The moments I’ve had with him are always the ones I kept safe because I didn’t have much of it at all. I remember counting, just counting in my head at night staring at our popcorn ceiling. My brother and I would count till one of us fell asleep. It kept me from panicking at the new environment we had in America when everything around us was so unfamiliar. I will be able to hear his voice, loud and in tune while we sing on our karaoke machine. I always thought he had the best voice in the family, it was quite clear actually, it was like no other. The way he smiled when I was able to acknowledge the references he thought no one would get. I remember the first day he moved to college, approximately 5 and a half hours away. While getting ready for school that exact same day, I found myself tearing up praying to God to keep him safe throughout his time there. And

he was kept safe because he’s a rock, unbreakable, independent, My fourth minute.

By this time, the surges will begin to weaken and I will see the most unique face Julia, my ate Jules, the most stubborn girl I know. Unlike no other, she had a unique way of showing her character. I’d like to say I know her the best. Only two years apart, when I had no one she was my someone. I can remember the days we fought, argued, and were so unbelievably angry at each other but, still, she was my accomplice. My mind will showcase those two girls running down the empty streets at 5 in the morning for a 7-Eleven iced coffee. “Aika are you still awake?”

I remember the exchanges of gossip and side quests we would go on while we ran errands for our mom. Our relationship seemed different from others. She knew the way to console me without having to agree with me in every way. She trained me to be stronger, independent, and to follow my head sometimes instead of just my heart. I will see her smile as the fifth minute comes to an end.

But that smile, it seemed familiar.

The smile fades into my littlest sister, Nina, the girl that reminds me of everyone in my family combined. I’ll be able to see her goofy smile that emerges before we bursted out laughing as my seconds pass. I can hear her screaming, “AIKA can we play!!”, as she grabs her ipad and big letters pop up on the screen displaying “roblox”. Her ways of communicating showcases myself, her inability to stop words from spilling out.

Her ways of keeping the family humble with her straightforward honesty. I can see every wacky pose she set forth as the picture clicked. Her extremely small fingers that could not even wrap around my finger and her small teeny tiny ears poking out of her head that were as small as my palm. The blessing we got from God, the miracle, my sixth minute.

And there, the last 60 seconds, I would like to believe that I will feel nothing but peace. As the memories begin to fade and my body becomes more relaxed, I will be unafraid. As I am surrounded by the people I love, and the people who loved me the most. The dreamlike memories float away, the electric surges slowly come to a stop but my heart will still swell with the love they’ve filled it with.

Las Sonrisas Que Cargo Kate Garcia-Mora

I’ve always observed how quickly someone’s facial expressions can change, just the way a look of worry can shift into a smile. This can be read but at a young age, this can become unseen. I grew up watching the smiles on my family’s faces when I accomplish something. These smiles are what I carry. It’s what I learned that hard work pays off. The work I put in can change their feelings with pride.

I saw tiredness in my dad’s eyes, the long sighs when his job wasn’t pulling through. I wanted to help him, but there wasn’t much I could really do. “Es que ya estoy cansado, mija,” he would say, these words would sink my heart. I knew he would pull through no matter how exhausted he felt. He would get home after being in the sun during the hot summer days and always greet me as soon as he comes through the door. Hiding the tiredness in his colored eyes. But this shifted, his smile lit up and changed with the look of happiness when telling him that I got a certificate for high honors. “Siguele echando ganas mija”.

I saw worry in my mom’s eyes, the selfless gestures she made without hesitation. Each and every sacrifice like giving up her last dollars just so she could see me and my little brother smile. Her endless stresses but my mommy still promised, “Voy a hacer todo lo posible para ustedes”. My mom would do anything for me and my siblings. All I wanted was to be able to repay her. Until I was able to change this with the look when telling her that I got a high score in my test. “Estoy bien orgullosa de ti mija,” she told me, and I got the feeling that I finally gave her something back.

I saw anxiousness in my older brother’s eyes, his unseen struggles.

His avoidance and built up emotions could have been avoided. His silence shifts away from us but when the opportunity came to talk to him, I took it. “I’m sorry Katie, I’ve been busy,” he’d say. Little did he know those conversations were some of the best moments of my childhood. The countless replays in my head of those moments are what I can remember him by. But yet I wanted to help him the most I could, reassure that he had me. And then his look changed with

the look of excitement when telling him I got a medal for my grades.

“Good job Katie.”

The look of concern in my sister’s eyes, the endless struggles to give the best of herself for me and my little brother. How grateful I am to have her, my sister. As I grew up my older sister has given me everything I’ve ever needed whether it’s just advice. The simple words I can hear for anyone else, hers mean more to me. She’s the one I go to when I can’t do things on my own. No matter the situation she never fails to put me and my little brother first: “I want to give you the life I wasn’t able to live.” I wouldn’t be who I am today without her. She’s been the light in every tunnel, the hope in every dark place I’ve faced.

I never knew how to return that kind of love until her look changed when telling her that I passed all my classes. “I’m so proud of you”.

The look of annoyance in my little brother’s eyes, his need to voice every opinion, ”Kate I need help with something,” as much as these were little things like the endless questions if his fit goes “hard” or what should I say when he gets stuck with his words. No matter if it helped or not, I’ll always be there for my little brother. Initially I didn’t know how to understand his intense emotions but I learned that being there mattered the most. And when reassuring that he has me, it changed with his expression when telling him that I’ll be there for him.

“Thank you sister.”

It was never something I was taught but it’s something I work for. The realization that I can accomplish something not just for me but for my family. As this became a struggle of voicing my own needs, working for these accomplishments became my approach to thank them for being all I needed in life. They’ve taught me so much without any words being said. Their face gestures, the smiles I get to see when finally accomplishing something for them. They shaped me into the habit to work hard, into someone who works not only to succeed but to give back. Their endless emotions and gestures have said more than enough. My gratitude for this endless love proved to me that I can do more.

Kate tries her hardest to make her family proud and be the best person to her friends and peers. She enjoys listening to music and learning new things about people. Her majestic chihuahua and fluffy yorkie bring her comfort. She loves to eat her moms and sisters food the most but never forgets about Canes.

quality writing education and is empowered to express themselves creatively through writing. We envision a Los Angeles where every teacher is supported in their writing-based educational objectives.

Mission: 826LA is dedicated to unlocking and cultivating the creative power of writing for students ages 6 to 18, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

How we advance our mission: A nonprofit organization, our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

Programs After-School Writing Programs Mondays through Thursdays, students attend 826LA for after-school writing programs. Students participate in community building activities, work on homework or reading with trained tutors, and of course, write! Students submit their writing for inclusion in chapbooks, which 826LA publishes twice a year. To celebrate students’ hard work, 826LA unveils these chapbooks at book release parties, where students read their work to thunderous applause from their volunteers, families, and peers.

Field Trips During the week, 826LA invites teachers and their students to our writing labs to participate in a morning of collaboration, creativity, and writing.

Whether Storytelling & Bookmaking, Well-Wishing & Poetry, Choose Your Own Adventure, or Memoir, field trips at 826LA support teacher curriculum and student learning by offering a safe space for students to be their most imaginative and to work on their writing skills. In a few short hours, students brainstorm, write, edit their work, and leave with something tangible—a bound book—as well as a renewed confidence in their ability to tell their stories.

In-Schools Programs & Writers’ Rooms Because not all students can come to us, 826LA brings specially trained volunteer tutors into classrooms throughout Los Angeles. There, volunteers provide one-on-one or small group assistance with writing projects. 826LA works with teachers to craft all projects, which are designed to engage students while targeting curricular needs. In addition to visiting twenty schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District each year, 826LA has additional sites within Manual Arts High School, Roosevelt High School, and Venice High School called The 826LA Writers’ Rooms.

Workshops 826LA’s workshops bring students together with artists, writers, and professionals for creative collaboration. Whether the subject is journalism or preparing for the zombie apocalypse, our workshops foster student creativity while strengthening writing skills. This program includes two long running partnerships with Paramount Pictures and the Hammer Museum.
