INTRODUCTION I was born in Minnesota to a family full of gardeners people who cared deeply about the environment around them. Every spring, when the snow melted and the ground thawed, we returned to the garden. My grandmothers, my mom, and my aunts poured their energy into creating beautiful spaces for our family to enjoy.

Being outside in the garden has always brought me a deep sense of calm. I didn’t have the words for it when I was younger, but now I understand that nature has been a constant in my life - a place to play, express creativity, explore the systems around me, and feel present.

When I moved to Los Angeles and began teaching at Manual Arts High School, I realized that many of my students did not have access to green space or healthy food. I knew this lack of access was putting unfair burdens onto them. I wanted to remove some of the barriers to accessing the content we were studying in Chemistry class and help provide students with what I thought might help improve their physical and mental health.

I started thinking about the role gardens had played in my own life and how spending time in gardens might help my students, and me, feel better physically, mentally, and as a community.

As I worked in the school garden with my students, I began to understand that tending to the land is not only about beauty or harvest. It is about our relationship with all life around us. Caring for the environment nurtures us personally, but it also sustains the larger ecosystems 6

we are part of--the soil, the insects, the water, and the countless forms of life that share the world with us. The garden is a reminder that our well-being and the health of the planet are deeply intertwined.

All people, whether they realize it or not, have a personal and ancestral connection to nature. Our existence is proof that our families once lived in close relationship with the land. Yet many people today feel disconnected from nature simply because they have not had the opportunity to experience that relationship firsthand.

The garden became a place where students could gather, learn, and imagine new possibilities for their communities.

At its heart, Chicas Verdes has always been about what happens when young people are given the space to grow.

In the garden, students discover that they are capable of creating change. They learn that small actions, a seed planted, a meal shared, a space cared for, can ripple outward.

Gardens remind us that growth takes patience, care, and many hands.

And when young people begin to see themselves as part of nature, they start to see their own potential more clearly.

In these pages, you will find their stories: stories of roots, resilience, and the many ways a garden can transform a life.

NATURE’S CYCLE Gardens remind us that nature works in cycles. Food scraps, fallen leaves, and plant trimmings can be turned into compost instead of being thrown away. Over time, compost breaks down into nutrient-rich soil that helps new plants grow.

Harvesting fruits, vegetables, and herbs is one of the most rewarding parts of gardening. Many plants actually produce more food when they are harvested regularly. Picking tomatoes, beans, or herbs encourages the plant to continue growing and producing. Each harvest also tells a story of care and patience. From planting seeds to nurturing plants through the seasons, every fruitand vegetable reflects the time, effort, and dedication that gardeners put into the soil.

Mi Viaje Con Chicas Verdes: Compartiendo La Llave Del Conocimiento Danna T.

Can a teenager motivate its community? My motivation is, and will continue to be, spreading the knowledge I acquire to transform other lives and break patterns. Today, I have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the key to learning and share them with past and future generations.

But it’s not all that simple, I have to earn that key day by day. That is why my conviction is so firm and leads me to appreciate every opportunity for academic and personal growth.

When I arrived in the United States, I realized that many children wanted the same learning key as me, and I joined Chicas Verdes so I could raise my voice and help them.

As the marketing committee leader, during my sophomore year, I created a workshop dedicated to healthy eating awareness from an early age. People in my community were able to learn about the short and long-term benefits of eating a regulated diet through games, podcasts, and posters. In this project I had the opportunity to make the learning and teaching process didactic by promoting teamwork, turning lessons into games, using visuals, including reading and writing that helped me connect ideas and improve participation. In the development of each workshop, I managed to discover the power of influence that our knowledge and voice has on other generations, in addition to improving my creativity and leadership skills. Girls Build awarded me the “most valuable builder” award, thanks to the positive impact the 12

project had on young people and adults. Receiving this award was not only gratifying for me, we all raised our voices that day and valued the space that the school gave us to teach ourselves.

My inspiration is emotional, but very real. It motivates me to show that it doesn’t matter where we come from: education key takes us to more worlds, helps us grow, contributes and opens new paths.

New Beginnings Dylan A.

Starting at a new school during my senior year was a significant change, and I wanted to make the most of the opportunity by getting involved in school activities.

I was browsing through clubs and I decided to join the Gardening Club, and it quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of my school experience. From the beginning, the club was welcoming and friendly, which made adjusting to a new environment much easier. Being part of a group that shared common interests helped me feel connected and engaged within the school community.

As I spent more time in the garden, I developed a genuine appreciation for nature and gardening. Working with plants was calming, and I found peace in planting, watering, and caring for them. Gardening allowed me to slow down and focus on the present moment, making it both enjoyable and rewarding. The club emphasized inclusiveness and teamwork, and everyone was encouraged to participate, ask questions, and learn at their own pace. This supportive environment made the experience even more positive.

Through the Chicas Verdes, I gained valuable knowledge and discovered many new aspects of gardening and sustainability. I learned how much time, patience, and responsibility it takes to grow and maintain healthy plants.

One of the most rewarding parts of the experience was harvesting the crops we grew. Seeing the direct results of my effort and dedication made me feel proud, especially when I was able to eat the food and share it with my family. It was fulfilling to know that something I helped 14

grow could be enjoyed by others.

Receiving an award through the club was a meaningful accomplishment and reflected the growth I experienced throughout the year. Gardening Club helped me build new skills, confidence, and a stronger connection to my school. Overall, the club played an important role in my personal growth by providing a welcoming community, hands-on learning, and a deeper appreciation for nature and sustainability.

LEARNING THROUGH CARE Gardens need consistent care. Watering plants, pulling weeds, and checking on their progress are small tasks that make a big difference over time. When gardeners care for their plants regularly, they help create the conditions for healthy growth.

Students who work in gardens learn responsibility and teamwork. Every task, no matter how small, contributes to the success of the garden. Through these experiences, young people learn that their actions matter.

Taking care of the garden becomes a way of taking care of the community.

Me llamo Valentina, soy de Bogotá-Colombia, tengo 16 años, cumplo años el 18 de Octubre y nací en el 2009; soy una persona muy creativa y me gusta crear cosas nuevas y diferentes. También me encanta bailar y escuchar música como Blessd, Maluma y Karol G. Me gusta conocer personas nuevas porque todos tenemos diferentes historias que contar y me gustaría compartir mi historia con ustedes.

Mi sueño cuando crezca es viajar por todo el mundo, principalmente París, Brasil e Italia. Quiero estudiar una carrera profesional; por el momento me apasionan muchas carreras pero principalmente estoy entre diseño de modas, arquitectura y comunicación social. Aparte de tener una carrera profesional me gustaría hacer cursos de otras cosas para aprender como tocar instrumentos, fotografía, pintura, belleza, manicurista y danza.

Estoy en Chicas Verdes desde Febrero del 2025 y me uní porque tengo una amiga que se llama Danna, que es Colombiana igual que yo, y me habló un poco sobre Chicas Verdes y me pareció interesante, así que decidí unirme. Me quede en Chicas Verdes porque me siento muy cómoda en este espacio - me divierto y puedo ser yo misma haciendo las cosas que me gustan. Siguientemente voy a hablar de cómo ha sido mi crecimiento personal en este año en Chicas Verdes y todo lo que he aprendido.

Aprender sobre las plantas y algunos animales me ha servido para mis clases de Biología, Química y Español.

En Chicas Verdes hemos visto y hablado sobre el tema de la fotosíntesis, ya que es algo importante que debemos saber para el crecimiento de las plantas y sus necesidades. Saber del proceso de la fotosíntesis es importante para poder cuidar nuestras plantas. En la clase de biología y química me ha servido este tema para poder desarrollar mis actividades. Aprender sobre los animales me sirvió en clase de español para un día que jugamos stop y teníamos que poner el nombre de un animal por la inicial de una letra del abecedario. Aparte de todo, fue importante para mí saber sobre varias especies de animales, ya que me ayudó a saber esta información y aprender cosas nuevas. Hacer manualidades y explorar mi creatividad en Chicas Verdes me ha servido para cuando hacemos los proyectos en clase, ya que en su gran mayoría son de manualidades.

La ropa del clóset una vez me ayudó para armar mi disfraz de Halloween para no gastar dinero, ya que en ese entonces no había tanto presupuesto. Así que cogí algunas prendas, las cuales ya la tela estaba un poco desgastada, para hacer una falda de retazos de tela y un corset negro que necesitaba. Con esta ropa pude armar la mayoría de mi disfraz y no tuve que gastar mucho dinero y quedó super guau.

Antes no me gustaba trabajar en equipo, ya que esto para mí es algo complicado. porque no me gusta, y termino haciendo todo yo sola y no dejo que las personas de mi equipo me ayuden. Pero ahora sí me dejó ayudar y escucho las opiniones de los demás. Chicas Verdes también me ha ayudado a socializar un poco, a hablar con otras personas que no conozco, ya que también en este campo se me complica un poco porque a veces soy un poco tímida, pero ya me siento más segura de mí misma 19

para poder hablar con otras personas. Especialmente cuando hacemos los comités y tengo que hablar en voz alta para dar mi opinión. También, ha hecho que mejoré un poco en clase cuando tengo que hacer exposiciones, ya que cuando tengo que hablar para todos en voz alta, me daba algo de pena.

En Chicas Verdes nos apoyan con becas que esto me enseña en parte a administración del dinero para uno saber en qué gastarlo en cosas necesarias y no donde uno va a perder el dinero, y en parte esto también nos enseña que para ganar dinero tenemos que ganarlo con esfuerzo y esto lo hacemos participando los martes y jueves despues de escuela en el jardín o con los mini proyectos que hacemos: cuidar nuestra plantas es un punto fundamental y limpiar el jardín, cuando vamos ayudar a repartir la comida que básicamente es organizarlas en las bolsas y sacar la ropa del closet, cuando vamos a las salidas de Chicas Verdes y participamos las salidas son como de ir a lugares naturales donde podemos aprovechar y ver paisajes también ir a museos y explorarlos o aprender sobre plantas y animales incluso a veces ir ayudar a sembrar plantas en lugares naturales todas esto que hacemos en Chicas Verdes nos sirven tanto para aprender, tener apoyos con becas y nuestras horas comunitarias.

Teniendo también en cuenta mis clases para que cuando esté en estos eventos no bajen mis calificaciones. Este dinero yo lo uso para iniciar un emprendimiento de vender arepas para invertir y tener dinero para comprar mis cosas personales.

El cuidado de las plantas es importante para que mis plantas crezcan y estén bonitas, algunas plantas necesitan más sol y agua para su crecimiento como las 20

girasoles que aman el sol necesitan riego frecuente y sobre todo esta debe ser plantada en tiempos cálidos.

Los tomates necesitan al menos 6-8 horas de sol al día y un riego de agua frecuente para que crezcan y produzcan frutos. Si la planta de tomate está brotando flores, estas tienen que ser cortadas ya que esto hace que la planta se concentre más en la flor que en el fruto y hay que contar los tallos de la parte inferior. Los calabacines es preferible que tengan pleno sol y tierra húmeda pero estas plantas requieren que estén bien drenadas. Yo le tengo mucho miedo a los bichos y en Chicas Verdes he podido ir superando ese miedo poco a poco; ya los veo y casi no reaccionó, aunque los gusanos son los únicos que aún no soporto. Estar cuidando mi cama, limpiándola y sembrando plantas. He tenido que acostumbrarme a ver estos bichitos; al principio fue difícil acostumbrarme, pero lo logré; poco a poco me fui acostumbrando a estos.

Estas serían todas las cosas que he aprendido y vivido en Chicas Verdes, y cabe aclarar que me siento una persona muy afortunada de que mi escuela tenga este programa que me parece super cool porque tiene muchas buenas cosas que ofrecernos a todos. Aparte de todo, es un lugar donde podemos ser nosotros mismos y salir de nuestra zona de confort, un lugar donde podemos conectar con la naturaleza y, tal vez, si nos sentimos cómodos, hablar de nuestros sentimientos, tanto cuando nos sentimos bien como mal. En conclusión, Chicas Verdes es un lugar donde podemos sentir mucha tranquilidad y paz mental.

Planting Peace and Community Valentina G.

My name is Valentina and I’m from Bogotá, Colombia. I’m 16 years old. My birthday is on October 18 and I was born in 2009. I’m a very creative person and I love coming up with new and unique ideas. I also love dancing and listening to music by artists like Blessd, Maluma, and Karol G. I enjoy meeting new people because we all have different stories to tell, and I’d love to share my story with you.

My dream when I grow up is to travel all over the world, mainly Paris, Brazil, and Italy. I want to pursue a professional career, but at the moment I’m passionate about many fields, particularly fashion design, architecture, and communications. In addition to a professional career, I’d like to take courses in other areas to learn things like playing instruments, photography, painting, beauty, manicure, and dance.

I’ve been with Chicas Verdes since February 2025. I joined because I have a friend named Danna, who is Colombian like me, and she told me a little about Chicas Verdes. It sounded interesting, so I decided to join. I stayed with Chicas Verdes because I feel very comfortable here. I have fun and can be myself while doing the things I love. Next, I’m going to talk about my personal growth this year at Chicas Verdes and everything I’ve learned.

Learning about plants and some animals has helped me in my biology, chemistry, and Spanish classes. At Chicas Verdes, we’ve studied and discussed photosynthesis, since it’s an important concept we need to understand 22

for plant growth and their needs. Understanding the process of photosynthesis is important for taking care of our plants. In biology and chemistry class, this topic has helped me with my assignments. Learning about animals helped me in Spanish class one day when we played a game where we had to name an animal starting with a specific letter of the alphabet. Aside from everything else, it was important for me to learn about various animal species, as it helped me gain this knowledge and learn new things. Doing crafts and exploring my creativity at Chicas Verdes has helped me with our class projects, since most of them involve crafts.

The clothes from the Community Closet once helped me put together my Halloween costume without spending any money, since I didn’t have much of a budget back then. I grabbed a few pieces of clothing, the fabric was already a little worn, to make a patchwork skirt and a black corset that I needed. With these clothes, I was able to put together most of my costume without spending much money, and it turned out super guau.

I used to dislike working in a team, since I find it to be something complicated because I don’t like it, so I’d end up doing everything on my own without letting my team help me. But now I do let them help, and I listen to others’ opinions. Chicas Verdes has also helped me socialize a bit and talk to people I don’t know, since that’s also a bit of a challenge for me because I’m sometimes a little shy, but now I feel more confident talking to others. Especially when we have committee meetings and I have to speak up to share my opinion. It’s also helped me improve a little in class when I have to give presentations, since I used to feel a bit self-conscious when I had to speak out loud in front of everyone.

At Chicas Verdes, they support us with scholarships, which shows me how to manage money so I know how to spend it on necessary things and not on things that are a waste of money. In part, we also learn that to earn money, we have to work hard for it. We do this by participating on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in the garden with the mini-projects we do like taking care of our plants or cleaning the garden, as well as when we help distribute produce, which involves organizing it into bags or taking clothes out of the Community Closet for the event.

When we participate in the Chicas Verdes field trips, we visit natural areas where we can enjoy and observe landscapes, as well as going to museums to explore or learn about plants and animals. Sometimes even helping to plant seeds in natural settings. Everything we do in Chicas Verdes helps us learn, provides support through scholarships, and counts toward our community service hours. I keep my classes in mind so that my grades don’t drop when I’m at these events. I plan to use this money to start a business selling arepas, to invest, and to have money to buy my personal items.

Taking care of plants is important so that my plants grow and look beautiful. Some plants need more sun and water to grow, such as sunflowers, which love the sun and need frequent watering. Above all, they should be planted during warm weather. Tomatoes need at least 6–8 hours of sun a day and frequent watering to grow and produce fruit. If the tomato plant is sprouting flowers, they need to be cut off because this causes the plant to focus more on the flower than on the fruit, and you have to count the stems from the bottom. Zucchini prefer full sun and moist soil, but these plants require well-drained soil. I’m really afraid of bugs and have been able to overcome that fear little by little at Chicas Verdes. Now, when I see them, I 24

hardly react. Though worms are the only ones I still can’t stand. Because of taking care of my garden bed, cleaning it, and planting, I’ve had to get used to seeing these little bugs. At first it was hard to get used to them, but I managed it and, little by little, I got used to them.

These are all the things I’ve learned and experienced at Chicas Verdes. I feel very lucky that my school has this program, which I think is super cool because it has so much to offer all of us. On top of everything else, it’s a place where we can be ourselves and step outside our comfort zone, a place where we can connect with nature and, perhaps, if we feel comfortable, talk about our feelings, whether we’re feeling good or bad. In conclusion, Chicas Verdes is a place where we can feel a deep sense of calm and peace of mind.

CARING FOR THE EARTH When we grow food, we learn how important it is to care for the earth. Healthy soil, clean water, and thriving ecosystems make it possible for gardens and communities to flourish.

Students who spend time in gardens often develop a deeper appreciation for nature.

They begin to see how their actions can protect the environment and support healthier communities.

By caring for the earth today, we help ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to grow, learn, and harvest from the land.

Organic Candles: Small Lights That Are Felt from the Heart Faviela G.

Chicas Verdes is a community of students who learn together like a family. It is a space where environmental education, coexistence, and hands-on projects come together to inspire meaningful change. Not through perfection or complicated ideas, but through simple actions carried out with intention, awareness, and respect for our surroundings. For me, being part of this community has meant learning not only how to care for the environment, but also how to connect with others, grow together, and value shared experiences.

One of the most meaningful activities we experienced was making organic candles using soy wax and natural essential oils. It was our first time doing something like this, and although it seemed simple at first, it quickly became something much deeper than we expected.

The Beginning Of A Different Experience On the day of the activity, the atmosphere was calm and welcoming. There was a special sense of peace, as if everyone was fully present in the moment. We gathered around the table while Miss Lupe began explaining the process step by step. Her way of teaching was clear, patient, and warm. She didn’t just explain what to do; she made sure we understood why each step mattered. As I listened, I felt excited and motivated to take action and learn by doing.

Miss Lupe explained why soy wax is a better option for both the environment and our health. She talked about the importance of working slowly, respecting time, and being mindful throughout the process. Everything felt accessible and meaningful, which made the learning experience feel special.

Aromas That Also Teach One of the most beautiful moments came when Miss Lupe began passing around the essential oils, one by one, inviting us to smell them calmly. Each person took a bottle, brought it close, and breathed deeply. The room filled with silence, soft smiles, and a shared sense of care.

Each aroma awakened something different. Lavender brought an immediate feeling of calm, eucalyptus felt fresh and clean, mint cleared the senses, and citrus scents added energy and joy. Miss Lupe listened attentively to our preferences, explained the benefits of each oil, and appreciated our choices. That moment felt very human and warm. It helped me realize that choosing a scent is also a way of listening to ourselves and caring for our emotions.

Learning With Calm And Intention When we began preparing the candles, everything became even more peaceful. Watching the wax slowly melt felt almost meditative. Time seemed to move more gently, and the atmosphere invited focus and calm.

Personally, I felt deeply connected at that moment. To nature, to the group, and to myself. This experience strengthened my environmental awareness and encouraged me to reflect on my habits and how small 29

choices can create real and positive change.

Reusing Is Also A Form Of Care For the containers, Miss Flores took the time to collect recycled glass jars. She personally searched for them, gathered them, and carefully cleaned each one before bringing them to us. She explained that reusing jars is much more sustainable than buying new ones and that it is also a free and accessible option.

That gesture felt especially meaningful. Knowing that she had taken the time and care to prepare something so simple made the entire experience feel even more thoughtful. Each jar carried its own story, and decorating them with dried flowers and leaves made every candle unique.

Working together strengthened our sense of community.

The space was filled with respect, collaboration, and warmth. It reminded me that caring for the environment can also mean caring for one another.

What A Small Light Can Leave Behind Lighting an organic candle at the end of the activity was a powerful moment. It represented the idea that a small action, when done with intention, can lead to deeper reflection and a desire to live more consciously.

At the end of the activity, I took my candle home. I didn’t just take a nice memory with me; I carried experiences, lessons, and a new way of seeing everyday life. When I lit the candle at home, I remembered every shared moment, every scent, and every conversation. I understood that 30

what we experienced that day would stay with me beyond that space.

I am confident that I will apply these lessons in the future. They inspired me to make more conscious choices and to share what I learned with my family, creating conversations and slowly building greater awareness about caring for both our environment and our health. That candle became a symbol of something just beginning: an intention to live with more attention, respect, and connection to nature.

Bringing The Experience Home For those who would like to experience something similar, making organic candles at home is a simple way to bring calm and warmth into your space. These candles can create a unique and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for sharing moments with family, friends, or for giving as a meaningful gift. In addition to being made with care, they are a healthier option, as they are created with natural materials and free from harmful chemicals.

Below, we share the recipe we used, with the hope that you can recreate this experience and bring a bit of this gentle light into your own home.

Recipe For Making Organic Candles At Home Ingredients • • • •

500 grams of soy wax Two tablespoons of natural essential oil Recycled glass jars, clean and dry Cotton wicks, preferably organic 31

Wooden sticks or clips to hold the wick Dried flowers or leaves for decoration, if desired

PREPARATION 1. Melt the soy wax using a double boiler, stirring gently until fully liquid. Remove it from the heat and allow it to rest for a few minutes so the temperature can slightly decrease.

2. Add the essential oil of your choice and mix carefully.

Place the wick in the center of the jar and secure it so it remains straight. Slowly pour the wax into the jar, leaving a small space at the top.

3. Allow the candle to cool for several hours until fully solid. Finally, trim the excess wick and decorate the jar if desired.

More Than a Garden The first week of high school felt overwhelming.

Everything was new. New buildings, new teachers, new faces, new expectations. The hallways were loud and fast.

I tried to look confident, but inside I felt nervous and small.

It felt like I was walking through a world that did not yet feel like mine.

One day, someone walked into the classroom with a warm smile and asked, “Who wants to join Chicas Verdes? It’s a gardening club.” It sounded simple. Just plants. Just a club. But something in me felt curious. I thought, why not?

I raised my hand without knowing that a small decision would become one of the most important choices of my high school life.

The first time I went, it felt like stepping into another world.

I went from buildings and concrete to trees and flowers.

From noise to fresh air. From pressure to calm. The space felt open and alive. The wind moved softly. The leaves made quiet sounds. The air felt lighter in my lungs. For the first time that week, I felt like I could breathe.

And that feeling stayed with me.

High school is stressful. There are exams, deadlines, expectations, and days when everything feels heavy. I have cried over a failed test. I have doubted myself. I have felt overwhelmed by the pressure to always do better. But every time I stepped into Chicas Verdes, I felt grounded again.

From 9th to 12th grade, this space became part of my growth. Working with nature taught me patience. Serving the community made me feel proud. Even the smallest actions, watering plants, organizing, cleaning, showing up, felt meaningful. What seems small from the outside feels powerful inside. It makes me feel like I am contributing something real.

But more than the plants, it is the people. We connect across grade levels. We support each other. We grow together. In a school that can sometimes feel overwhelming, Chicas Verdes feels like family.

Now, as I prepare to move into my next stage of life, I understand something clearly. That first “why not” 33

changed me. Chicas Verdes did not just help me relax.

It shaped the person I am becoming. It taught me that growth takes time. That calm is powerful. That small actions matter.

When I leave, I know I will feel that deep nostalgia, that beautiful mix of gratitude and sadness. Not because it is ending, but because it meant something real. Chicas Verdes is not just a memory of high school.

Gardens: Nature’s Quiet Cleaners Robyn T.

While we often think of air as invisible, the plants in our garden are constantly working behind the scenes to filter and purify the air we breathe. The plants in our garden improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis, filtering particles with their leaves and different organic compounds. They also help remove harmful pollutants such as dust, smoke, toxins from the air, and volatile organic compounds that come from everyday items like cleaning products or paint, making the environment healthier. Plants increase humidity by releasing water vapor, which can improve breathing and reduce dryness in the air. Gardens act like natural air filters, creating a fresher and a more balanced atmosphere for people to enjoy. So far it has been a pleasure to hang out with Chicas Verdes even though I have only been here for maybe a few months compared to everyone else who has been here for years. The reason I joined Chicas Verdes was not just for the community service but because I was very interested to see what it had to offer and see if it would interest me. I love how everyone works on the garden making sure it stays organized and clean for the environment. They always find new activities to do throughout the whole day, whether it’s cooking or making smoothies. Regardless of the activity, it is always entertaining for all of us.

My experience being part of the branding committee in Chicas Verdes is through the Community Closet. Knowing how to manage the amount of clothes that people receive and help them choose the clothes to take home makes me feel happy. In the branding committee, I have the role of being an officer which organizes and leads members of the program. We run community closet giveaways once a month. The first time I organized the closet, I didn’t know where to start. I used my organizing strengths to help me with this task. We organized by grouping the items in the closet by color, size, and gender. Here, we create second opportunities for used clothing instead of having them end up in the landfill. Some students repurpose the clothing items to create some unique designs. Some designs require cutting, sewing, screen printing and adding patches and other items.

This community closet really brings people together.

We receive donations from other students, teachers and community members. When it is time to set up the community closet giveaway, students, parents and teachers appreciate what Chicas Verdes is doing with the closet. It’s been rewarding to see the impact we have made. I remember that the first month of the school year, students were not too interested in getting the clothes because it was kind of embarrassing to get second hand clothes. It took some time for the students to get comfortable looking, taking clothes with them and began to appreciate this opportunity. Just like people, clothing and other household items need a second chance. I urge more people to repurpose clothes and other items, giving 36

them a second home.

De Un Club A Una Comunidad Malena G.

Durante mi segundo año, ver la comida que sobraba de las donaciones nos motivó a cambiar Chicas Verdes, un pequeño club de jardinería, y convertirlo en una comunidad más activa. El club tenía pocos miembros y casi no había anuncios en la escuela sobre los eventos.

Muchas bolsas de comida quedaron sin entregarse y había pocos voluntarios. Queríamos que estudiantes, maestros y padres vieran el club como una comunidad, un lugar donde se promueve la vida saludable y la sostenibilidad, donde las familias pueden recibir apoyo y donde las personas pueden aprender y conectarse con la naturaleza. Tomé la iniciativa y, después de una elección, me convertí en la Oficial de Operaciones de Chicas Verdes para ayudar a hacer ese cambio.

Nunca había sido líder antes y tenía miedo de fallar. Pero ese miedo se convirtió en motivación. Invitamos a amigos a unirse y pusimos carteles y volantes por toda la escuela.

También comenzamos a recibir donaciones de ropa para que las familias pudieran encontrar prendas útiles y en buen estado para el día a día. Además, creamos un puesto de comida saludable donde ofrecemos barras de fruta y yogurt con frutas. También hicimos compost con la comida que no se usaba del food giveaway para crear fertilizante para el jardín.

From A Club To A Community Malena G.

During my sophomore year, seeing the food left over from donations motivated us to transform Chicas Verdes from a small gardening club into a more active community.

The club had few members, and there were almost no announcements at school about its events. Many bags of food went unclaimed, and there were few volunteers. We wanted students, teachers, and parents to see the club as a community, a place that promotes healthy living and sustainability, where families can find support, and where people can learn and connect with nature. I took the initiative and, after an election, I became the Operations Officer for Chicas Verdes to help bring about that change.

I had never been a leader before and was afraid of failing.

But that fear turned into motivation. We invited friends to join and put up posters and flyers all over the school. We also started receiving clothing donations so that families could find useful, good-quality clothes for everyday use.

Additionally, we set up a healthy food stand where we offer fruit bars and yogurt with fruit. We also composted the uneaten food from the food giveaway to create fertilizer for the garden.

At the next food distribution event, everything changed.

The number of volunteers increased, and not a single bag of food went to waste. Students, teachers, and parents learned more about healthy habits, and many students wanted to join the club. Since then, the distributions, the garden, and the club’s membership have continued to grow each semester, bringing us closer to the community we envisioned.

Today, Chicas Verdes is much more than just a gardening club. It’s a community where we learn together, help families, and promote a healthy lifestyle. I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just about giving instructions, but about taking action and working with others. Even small actions can make a big difference, and teamwork can turn ideas into reality.

Growing Together Diversity is one of the secrets to a strong garden. Planting a variety of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruits creates a balanced ecosystem where plants can support one another. Some plants even grow better when they are planted side by side, sharing nutrients and helping protect each other from pests.

Flowers are especially important because they attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. These insects help plants produce fruits and seeds, making them an essential part of a thriving garden.

Para mí, el marketing en Chicas Verdes nunca ha sido solo obtener la atención de los estudiantes, sino compartir nuestra historia con la comunidad de una forma honesta y consciente. Desde el inicio entendí que nuestra marca, tanto personal como colectiva, es una herramienta para generar cambio y transformar nuestro entorno. Poco a poco aprendimos juntas que el pensamiento de las generaciones jóvenes y futuras se construye cuando mostramos quiénes somos de verdad. Y cuando, a pesar de las dudas y los retos, seguimos avanzando con cada proyecto. No seguimos tendencias por moda ni mantenemos una imagen superficial; cada acción que tomamos nace de una conexión genuina con nuestra realidad y con las necesidades de nuestra comunidad.

Mi experiencia personal influyó directamente en la creación de estrategias de marketing, ya que siempre supe que cada folleto, podcast o material promocional debía tener un propósito claro y un lenguaje accesible. A través de mi clase de literatura aprendí que un lenguaje excesivamente complejo puede ser contraproducente y distorsionar el mensaje, por lo que prioricé la claridad y la intención en cada iniciativa. El propósito de Chicas Verdes siempre ha sido el cambio y la comunidad: esparcir conciencia, crecer, aprender y equivocarnos juntas.

For me, marketing Chicas Verdes has never been just about grabbing students’ attention, but about sharing our story with the community in an honest and mindful way. From the very beginning, I understood that our brand, both personal and collective, is a tool for driving change and transforming our surroundings. Little by little, we learned together that the minds of young and future generations are built when we show who we really are. And when, despite doubts and obstacles, we keep moving forward with every project. We don’t follow trends just because they’re in style, nor do we maintain a superficial image; every action we take stems from a genuine connection to our reality and the needs of our community.

My personal experience directly influenced the development of marketing strategies, as I always knew that every flyer, podcast, or promotional material needed to have a clear purpose and accessible language.

Through my literature class, I learned that overly complex language can be counterproductive and distort the message, so I prioritized clarity and intention in every initiative. The purpose of Chicas Verdes has always been change and community: to spread awareness, grow, learn, and make mistakes together. We’ve put this vision into action through student-led podcasts, posters, and advertisements for our events, videos, and social media posts, as well as workshops for parents and children led by club members, and announcements promoting our food giveaways, field trips, and community closet events.

From my role as marketing officer, I contributed to the club’s long-term growth by consistently highlighting its strengths through presentations to other students, foundations, and community members. I ensured that all promotional materials maintained a clear identity consistent with Chicas Verdes’ values. The obstacles I faced allowed me to develop a mindful style of leadership, learning to recognize and regulate my emotions to solve problems rationally, lead with empathy, and be mindful of the impact of my words. Rainy Days Franccesca A.

Todos tenemos nuestros días soleados como nuestros días lluviosos. Muchos catalogan los días lluviosos como tristes o malos. Pero tal vez no lo sean. Tal vez representan un reto, un obstáculo necesario para poder seguir adelante. En el caso de Chicas Verdes, quisiera compartir algunos retos que he estado teniendo durante mi estancia en esta comunidad. No necesariamente malos pero sí que me ayudaron a seguir creciendo como persona y como grupo. Para ser honesta, admito que soy de esas personas que huyen del problema y a veces se les hace difícil enfrentar la situación. Como por ejemplo, si algún día no me sentía bien, preferiría irme de ese lugar lo más antes posible porque no tenía la “fuerza” o “mentalidad” como para afrontar esos retos en ese mismo momento. Pero de ahí me fui dando cuenta que eso no era lo que quería para mi, porque era consciente que a veces dejaba de ir a Chicas Verdes por eso. Hoy en día he mejorado en ese aspecto. Ya no me dejo llevar por esos pensamientos momentáneos. Decido quedarme, enfrentar lo que sea necesario y recordar por qué elegí formar parte de esta bella comunidad: el cuidado de la naturaleza y el deseo de crecer, no es solo como persona, sino también como parte de un equipo.

Uno de los mayores retos que enfrentamos como equipo fueron las plagas que invadieron nuestros huertos. Durante el verano/primavera la población de insectos y plagas aumenta en cantidades que se hacen notorios en aquellos períodos, y en nuestro caso no fue una excepción. Un día en Chicas Verdes, estábamos revisando los alrededores del jardín, notamos como 54

algunas plantas se estaban deteriorando y marchitando.

Al principio creíamos que era por el cambio climático, pero nuestros líderes nos dijeron que lo más probable es que era debido a las plagas; en efecto, tiene que ver con el cambio climático pero también por la falta de luz, agua o nutrientes, entonces buscamos varias maneras de deshacernos de las plagas, utilizamos vinagre y cortamos las partes dañadas de las plantas, limpiamos su entorno y así poco a poco veíamos como las plagas iban disminuyendo. Mejorando el cuidado de nuestro jardín pudimos avanzar como grupo y cumplir nuestro propósito en Chicas Verdes.

Esta experiencia fue recordatorio de ser más responsables y disciplinados respecto al cuidado de nuestra comunidad. Comprendimos que formar parte de un equipo no significa solo estar cuando es conveniente, sino sostenerlo incluso cuando atraviesa dificultades.

A partir de esa experiencia, algo cambió. Poco a poco comenzamos a organizarnos mejor, a motivarnos entre nosotros y a recordar por qué habíamos decidido formar parte de este espacio. Incluso invitar a amistades que ahora también forman parte del grupo, aportando nuevas energías y perspectivas, Hoy percibo más entusiasmo y compromiso. Aunque seguimos siendo un equipo pequeño, hemos entendido que el tamaño no define la fuerza de una comunidad, sino la dedicación de quienes siguen aquí.

Si los días lluviosos representan los retos, entonces como equipo hemos aprendido a no temerles. Porque entendimos que el verdadero crecimiento no ocurre solo cuando todo florece, sino cuando decidimos cuidar el jardín incluso en medio de la tormenta.

We all have our sunny days as well as our rainy days.

Many people label rainy days as sad or bad. But maybe they aren’t. Maybe they represent a challenge, a necessary hurdle we must overcome to move forward.

In the case of Chicas Verdes, I’d like to share some challenges I’ve faced during my time in this community.

Not necessarily bad ones, but ones that have helped me continue to grow as a person and as part of a group.

To be honest, I admit that I’m one of those people who runs away from problems and sometimes finds it hard to face a situation. For example, if I didn’t feel well one day, I’d rather leave that place as soon as possible because I didn’t have the “strength” or “state of mind” to tackle those challenges right then and there. But from there, I started to realize that wasn’t what I wanted for myself, because I was aware that sometimes I was skipping Chicas Verdes because of that. Nowadays, I’ve improved in that aspect. I no longer let myself be carried away by those momentary thoughts. I choose to stay, face whatever is necessary, and remember why I decided to be part of this beautiful community: caring for nature and the desire to grow, not just as a person, but also as part of a team.

One of the biggest challenges we faced as a team was the pests that invaded our gardens. During the spring and summer, insect and pest populations surge to levels that become particularly noticeable during those seasons, and our situation was no exception. One day at Chicas Verdes, we were checking the area around the garden and noticed that some plants were deteriorating and wilting.

At first, we thought it was due to climate change, but our leaders told us it was most likely caused by pests. It does indeed have to do with climate change, but it also has to do with a lack of light, water, or nutrients. We then looked for various ways to get rid of the pests: we used vinegar, cut off the damaged parts of the plants, and cleaned up the area around them. Little by little we saw the pests decrease. By improving the care of our garden, we were able to move forward as a group and fulfill our purpose at Chicas Verdes.

This experience served as a reminder to be more responsible and disciplined in caring for our community.

We realized that being part of a team doesn’t just mean showing up when it’s convenient, but rather supporting the garden even when it faces challenges.

After that experience, something changed. Little by little, we began to organize ourselves better, motivate one another, and remember why we had decided to be part of this space. We even began inviting friends who are now part of the group, bringing new energy and perspectives. Today, I notice more enthusiasm and commitment. Although we’re still a small team, we’ve come to understand that size doesn’t define the strength of a community, but rather the dedication of those who remain here.

If rainy days represent challenges, then as a team we have learned not to fear them. Because we understood that true growth doesn’t happen only when everything is blooming, but when we decide to tend the garden even in the middle of a storm.

Lessons from the Garden Gardening teaches us that growth happens in many ways. Plants grow taller, roots grow deeper, and communities grow stronger when people work together to care for shared spaces. Mi nombre es Dulce Boror, tengo 16 años, soy proveniente de Guatemala, vivo en Los Ángeles, California y estoy en 10th grado. A la fecha de hoy, me dedico totalmente a la escuela, clubes, y deportes. Mis gustos varían demasiado, pero aquí están unos de mis hobbies preferidos. Mi deporte favorito es el básquetbol y juego en el equipo feminino de jugadores en Manual Arts; mi género de música preferido es el jazz; me gustan los animales exóticos y los tatuajes de moda; me encanta probar nuevos platos, explorar nuevos lugares, experimentar nuevas sensaciones. También, me encanta conocer nuevas personas y por supuesto la jardinería y naturaleza.

En Chicas Verdes he conocido un grupo de personas quienes han formado un lugar importante en mi corazón; nunca más tendré una experiencia comparable tan linda como la que me dieron con su calidez. Antes de conocerlos estaba pasando por muchos momentos difíciles, y cosas tan simples como ver las plantas me daba paz. Una de las cosas que llevó mi interés a gran escala en las plantas fue de pequeñas experiencias cuando era una niña y plantaba en mi jardín semillas que brotaban, creciendo rápidamente. Mis padres solían verme y decir que tenía una buena mano. Acciones como estas hicieron que mi interés creciera, pero se viera detenido por situaciones de la vida.

Hasta el año 2025, cuando retomé mi interés al conocer a Chicas Verdes y a mis queridas Miss Lupe y Flores, las cuales fueron un rayito de sol en mi vida, doy gracias a Dios por todas estas buenas experiencias que opacan las 60

My name is Dulce Boror. I’m 16 years old, originally from Guatemala, and I live in Los Angeles, California. I’m currently a 10th grader. At the moment, I’m fully focused on school, clubs, and sports. My tastes vary a lot, but here are some of my favorite hobbies. My favorite sport is basketball, and I play on the girls’ team at Manual Arts.

My favorite genre of music is jazz. I love exotic animals and trendy tattoos. I love trying new foods, exploring new places, and experiencing new sensations. I also love meeting new people and, of course, gardening and nature.

At Chicas Verdes, I met a group of people who have earned a special place in my heart; I will never again have an experience as wonderful as the one they gave me with their warmth. Before meeting them, I was going through a lot of moments that were difficult, and simple things like looking at plants brought me peace. One of the things that sparked my deep interest in plants was a series of small experiences I had as a child, when I would plant seeds in my garden that would sprout and grow quickly. My parents used to watch me and say I had a green thumb.

Actions like these made my interest grow, but it was put on hold by life’s circumstances.

It wasn’t until 2025, when I reignited my interest by meeting Chicas Verdes and my dear Miss Lupe and Flores, who were a ray of sunshine in my life, that I gave thanks to God for all these good experiences that overshadow the bad ones. It will continue to be a part of my life through my senior year of high school, and I hope 62

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado qué sucede en el jardín de la escuela cuando nadie lo está visitando? Para muchas personas puede parecer solo un espacio con plantas, pero para mí se convirtió en un lugar donde aprendí algo muy importante: que la “sustentabilidad no se aprende de memoria”, se aprende con las manos en la tierra. Gracias a Chicas Verdes, entendí que cuidar el planeta no es algo lejano, sino algo que se vive todos los días.

Vivir en la ciudad puede ser agotador. Pasamos gran parte del tiempo ocupados, encerrados en salones y rodeados de ruido. El jardín se volvió un espacio diferente para mi, un lugar donde todavía se puede conectar con la naturaleza, respirar con más calma y reflexionar. Estar ahí me hizo más consciente de la importancia de cuidar el medio ambiente, no solo por el jardín, sino porque es algo que nos beneficia a todos.

De hecho en mi persona al inicio no sabía mucho sobre la sustentabilidad ni pensaba que fuera algo para mí. Venir de muy lejos y adaptar me a mi nueva vida escolar se sentía difícil. Aun así, decidí unirme al club porque quería cumplir mis metas y encontrar un espacio donde pudiera crecer. Con el tiempo, al participar en las juntas y trabajar en el jardín, entendí que la sustentabilidad no es algo complicado ni exclusivo de expertos. Empieza con hábitos simples, constancia y compromiso, incluso cuando las cosas no son fáciles.

Una de las prácticas más importantes que realizamos es el sistema de compostaje de la escuela. En cada 66

reunión se nos recuerda separar la basura orgánica, como restos de frutas y verduras, en lugar de tirarla a la basura normal. Antes, yo no pensaba en eso y simplemente tiraba los restos sin conciencia. Ahora entiendo que esos residuos no son basura, sino recursos orgánicos que pueden regresar a la tierra y nutrir nuevas plantas. Usar correctamente los botes de composta ayudan a que se tenga un buen proceso y que tenga una buena calidad de nutrientes que ayuden a las plantas a crecer de manera sana y fuertes donde no se puede tirar plástico ni metal porque arruinaria el proceso. Solo se colocan restos de comida, hojas secas y otros materiales orgánicos. Con el tiempo, esos desechos se convertirán en tierra orgánica que brinda un ahorro de productos exportados y a utilizarlo en todo el jardín llena de nutrientes que luego se utiliza en el jardín.

La sustentabilidad también se refleja en el cuidado de las áreas de plantación del jardín. Cada grupo es responsable de dos camas, pero el jardín funciona como un solo sistema. Si una cama se descuida, pueden aparecer plagas que afectan a las demás. Por eso, cuando alguien no puede asistir, los demás ayudan. Donde se da inicio el trabajo en equipo necesaria para que el espacio se mantenga vivo.

Para cuidar mejor el ambiente y ahorrar agua, seguimos listas de lo que se puede sembrar en cada temporada y retiramos las plantas cuando su ciclo ya terminó. Esto nos enseña a respetar los tiempos de la naturaleza y a no desperdiciar recursos. También usamos el agua con cuidado, regando solo lo necesario y utilizando pocas mangueras. Son decisiones pequeñas, pero con un impacto real a largo plazo.

En mis años en el club recuerdo que el mes de febrero del 2025 vivimos una experiencia especial relacionada con la sustentabilidad. Recibimos la visita de Ms. Leah, parte del programa Intersectional Environmentalist, quien nos donó un comedero para aves. Lo armamos juntos como equipo, enfrentando retos como lograr que tuviera un buen equilibrio. Desde entonces, en cada reunión vemos aves como colibríes y palomas visitando el jardín.

Esto nos demostró que nuestras acciones contribuyen a crear un espacio más vivo y equilibrado, apoyando la polinización y la biodiversidad.

Además del trabajo físico, el jardín se convirtió en un espacio para conectar con la naturaleza. Plantar sin guantes, tocar la tierra y ver crecer las plantas me ayudó a sentirme más presente y tranquila. Destacando que la sustentabilidad aporta paz mental luego de un día de largas horas de estudio.

Las habilidades como ser organizado, creativo y responsable son útiles durante los food giveaways y parent workshops, donde tenemos que incentivar tener una alimentación más sana y demostrar que se tiene aún el apoyo de conseguir alimento no procesado.

Unirme a Chicas Verdes también fue una forma de mantenerme comprometida con mis objetivos personales y académicos. A través del club aprendí la importancia de la constancia, el compromiso y el servicio a la comunidad.

Más allá de cumplir los requisitos para poder graduarme, lo que realmente me llenó de alegría es haber sido parte de un espacio que cuida el presente y piensa en el futuro.

Chicas Verdes no es solamente un club de jardinería; es un lugar donde puedes dejar una huella positiva para las 68

Have you ever wondered what happens in the school garden when no one is visiting it? For many people, it may seem like just a space with plants, but for me, it became a place where I learned something very important: that sustainability isn’t something you learn by heart, you learn it with your hands in the soil. Thanks to Chicas Verdes, I understood that caring for the planet isn’t something foreign, but something we experience every day.

Living in the city can be draining. As students, we spend much of our time busy, cooped up in classrooms, and surrounded by noise. The garden became a different kind of space for me, a place where you can still connect with nature, breathe more calmly, and reflect. Being there made me more aware of the importance of caring for the environment, not just for the garden, but because we all benefit from it.

To be honest, at first I did not know much about sustainability, nor did I think it was something for me.

Coming from far away and adjusting to my new school life felt difficult. Even so, I decided to join the club because I wanted to achieve my goals and find a place where I could grow. Over time, by participating in meetings and working in the garden, I realized that sustainability is not complicated or something only experts can do. It starts with simple habits, consistency, and commitment, even when things are not easy.

One of the most important practices we do is the school’s composting system. At every meeting, we’re reminded to 70

separate organic waste, like fruit and vegetable scraps, instead of throwing it in the regular trash. Before, I didn’t think about that and just threw the scraps away without a second thought. Now I understand that these scraps aren’t trash, but organic resources that can return to the soil and nourish new plants. Using the compost bins correctly helps ensure a successful decomposition process and create high-quality nutrients that help plants grow healthy and strong. Plastic or metal cannot be added because they would ruin the process. Only food scraps, dry leaves, and other organic materials should be placed inside. Over time, this waste will turn into organic soil, which provides savings on the purchase of imported products and, when used throughout the garden, fills the soil with nutrients that are then utilized in the garden.

Sustainability is also reflected in how we care for the garden’s planting areas. Each group is responsible for two raised beds, but the garden functions as a single system.

If one bed is neglected, pests can appear that affect the other beds. That’s why, when someone can’t attend, the others step in to help. This is where teambuilding necessary to keep the space alive begins.

To better care for the environment and conserve water, we follow lists of what can be planted in each season and remove plants once their cycle has ended. This teaches us to respect nature’s rhythms and not to waste resources. We also use water carefully, watering only what is necessary and using a few hoses. These are small decisions, but they have a real long-term impact.

In my years in the club, I remember that in February 2025 we had a special experience related to sustainability.

We were visited by Ms. Leah, part of the Intersectional 71

Environmentalist program, who donated a bird feeder to us. We put it together as a team, facing challenges like getting it to balance properly. Since then, at every meeting we see birds like hummingbirds and pigeons visiting the garden. This showed us that our actions help create a more vibrant and balanced space, supporting pollination and biodiversity.

In addition to the physical work, the garden turned into a space to connect with nature. Planting without gloves, touching the soil, and watching the plants grow helped me feel more present and at peace. It’s worth noting that sustainability allows for peace of mind after a long day of school.

Skills like being organized, creative, and responsible are useful during food giveaways and parent workshops, where we need to encourage healthier eating and demonstrate that there is still support available for obtaining unprocessed food.

Joining Chicas Verdes was also a way to stay committed to my personal and academic goals. Through the club, I learned the importance of perseverance, commitment, and community service. Beyond meeting the requirements to graduate, what truly filled me with joy was being part of a space that cares for the present and thinks about the future.

Chicas Verdes isn’t just a gardening club; it’s a place where you can leave a positive mark for the next generation.

Seeds of Potential Every garden begins with a seed. At first, a seed may look small and simple, but inside it holds the potential for something incredible. With the right conditions, soil, water, sunlight, and care a seed slowly begins to grow.

Young people are much the same.

When students are given support, encouragement, and opportunities to learn, their potential begins to unfold. Just like seeds in a garden, growth takes time, patience, and nurturing.

In the garden, we learn that every seed deserves the chance to grow. When we care for our gardens and for one another, we help create the conditions where everyone can thrive.

I love nature, but I never had access to a garden outside of school until the day I joined Chicas Verdes.

All I knew was that there was a garden and it required real responsibility and effort to maintain it. The girls in Chicas Verdes are really hard working, determined, and committed to serving their community. I had no idea how much work they had to put into it for the garden to flourish. I am going to go back to when I joined Chicas Verdes. It was a struggle to be an effective leader and I had an experience with Chicas that helped me step out of my comfort zone. A lot of us as leaders can be born with talent and skills but very few of us are not honest about having a weakness in their leadership. I am not talking about the kind of weakness you know you have and work on but I am talking about the kind of weakness that you don’t realize until someone else points this out to you. I am thankful for Chicas Verdes because I was challenged and transformed. I loved the idea of having a leadership role but I never actually knew that being a leader comes with responsibility and commitment. It was easy for me to say yes from a surface level but I had to actually learn how to rely on others and be a team player. I didn’t just have a leadership position, I developed a leadership lifestyle.

In 2024, I was the Branding Operations Officer of Chicas Verdes and my job was to help build the brand of the non-profit organization. I was in charge of designing logos, clothes, and merchandise to represent and promote a strong foundation for Chicas Verdes. I enjoyed designing the clothes with a vision but I lacked discipline and consistency to actually make my visions and goals 76

a reality. I was afraid of bugs and getting my hands dirty.

My only focus was fashion and the title of being a leader.

Let’s be honest, a lot of us are still and are like that which isn’t right. I was challenged, corrected, and led by Ms. Lupe’s humility. One day, I met with Ms. Lupe and she said to me that I am a great leader with great visions but I need to step up and choose quality over quantity.

I didn’t mention beforehand how I was overloaded with tasks from other responsibilities I had agreed to be a part of. I seriously was involved in every club and event!

I was always productive and busy but not effective in my leadership. I looked like a leader that was doing it all and accomplishing great things, but I knew there was an imbalance in other areas of my leadership. After Ms. Lupe and I had that conversation, I thought deeply about those words. Many leaders today want to accomplish so many things but we are trying to accomplish too much at once instead of working towards one project or club at a time.

Sometimes we as leaders don’t recognize that too much productivity without a balance can lead us to emotional stress and it can lead you to choose between prioritizing one responsibility over another. An example of this is when I was doing good in modeling and cheering, but in Chicas Verdes I was leaving my responsibilities on my committee. Over time, I had started making better decisions that benefited my leadership and benefitted the Chicas Verdes members. I remember so clearly choosing to communicate my flaws as a leader to the Chicas Verdes members. I took the time to set up different questions and topics to make sure I arranged meetings for members to feel comfortable and seen. I learned to listen to others’ ideas while giving selfless feedback. I started asking questions to the branding committee to meet around everyone’s schedule so we could start working towards 77

the mission and vision for Chicas. I learned how to not take committee for granted but I valued the importance of community and fellowship. The most important thing I have learned as a leader is to continue to lead others with integrity and diligence.

My 3 Years In Chicas Verdes Martin C.T.

When I came to Manual Arts in my 9th grade year, I didn’t know aboutChicas until my sister talked about the after school program. I was a little nervous when she brought me. I got to know everyone and made some friends that were seniors. I remember them telling me that it’s so fun to be here because of the activities that they do, like the garden cleanup events and gardening. Also the food giveaways to people and students. It was fun to help my community members so they don’t need to spend money on groceries.

When my sister graduated, I was feeling sad because she was the one who helped me join Chicas Verdes. She told me that I should not leave chicas until I graduated from Manual Arts and Chicas Verdes people were happy when I decided to stay in the program. I remember when I was in 10th grade, I was the only boy in the program, but that didn’t stop me from going just to listen. I started learning how to plant some vegetables and fruits like strawberries, oranges, and limes. I had my own bed to plant them and it was fun to feel the plants when you are planting them and I learned how to dig without killing the plant. I remember when they showed me how to transplant half of the plant.

To maintain my bed,I have to clean my bed each month and water it so it doesn’t dry out. I remember doing compost cleanup and putting trash in such as bananas when they go bad to make fertilizer to keep the plants strong. It’s super fun to be in Chicas Verdes because they show you how to help the community and take care of plants.

Caring For The Garden Watering is one of the most important ways to care for a garden. Instead of watering lightly every day, gardeners try to water deeply so roots grow stronger and reach further into the soil. Early morning is often the best time to water because plants can absorb moisture before the heat of the day.

Mulch acts like a protective blanket for the garden. A layer of straw, leaves, or wood chips helps the soil hold moisture, keeps roots cool, and slows the growth of weeds.

When soil is protected, plants are better able to thrive.

Spending time observing the garden helps gardeners understand what their plants need. Sometimes leaves tell us a plant needs water, more sunlight, or more space to grow. By paying attention to these small signs, gardeners learn how to care for their plants more effectively.

Mis manos sudaban y el corazón me latía con fuerza.

Caminaba por los pasillos de la escuela sin reconocer nada a mi alrededor. Todo era extraño, ajeno, un país distinto, los susurros me envolvían como un eco constante, y la ansiedad me consumía poco a poco. Sentía que no pertenecía a ese lugar, como si mi presencia fuera un error, algo dentro de mi se desmoronaba en silencio, solo quería volver a lo conocido, a la vida que tenía antes de llegar aquí, a un lugar donde no tuviera que aprender a respirar de nuevo.

Recuerdo que un día, en noveno grado, mis ojos se detuvieron en un poster pegado en la pared. Decía Chicas Verdes. Estaba escrito en español algo simple pero profundamente significativo para mí en ese momento. Debajo, en inglés, se leía gardening club. No sabía exactamente qué significaba eso ni qué hacía un club así, pero eso no me detuvo, en medio del miedo y la confusión sentí curiosidad algo en ese nombre me hizo acercarme, a comenzar a aceptar mi nueva realidad, a imaginar un espacio distinto, un lugar donde quizá podría empezar a sentirme en que pertenecía. Hoy, en mi cuarto año, sigo aquí. Chicas Verdes es el club que me vio crecer como persona, que fue testigo de mis cambios y me ayudó a fortalecer mis habilidades de liderazgo. Ya no lo veo como un lugar donde tengo que trabajar, sino como parte de mi comunidad, fue ahí donde creé memorias, amistades y conocimiento que me acompañarán toda la vida.

Estos cuatro años estuve lleno de conocimiento no solo 82

descubrí que el jardín podía ser una solución real a la falta de comida saludable, si no también un refugio, al estar rodeada de naturaleza ver la tierra en mis manos ver las semillas brotar, y ser parte del cuidado de la plantas, aprendí sobre siembra, fue difícil pero con paciencia y responsabilidad puede aportar al jardín y ser parte de ello. Poder ver como crecían nuestros frutos desde cero, me enseñó que comer natural no solamente era posible, sino también es hermoso educativo y bueno para el planeta. El jardín se convirtió en un espacio donde no solo crecían las plantas sino también mi persona y cuando antes me sentía perdida con chicas verdes encontré mi lugar y mi sentido de pertenencia.

Con el tiempo, aprendí más, me envolví más, y mi conocimiento aumentó, así que tome la iniciativa y me postule para ser officer en el comité de food access. Ser parte de este comité me hizo entender que el acceso a comida es una necesidad básica y un acto de cuidado hacia los demás. Al participar en los Food giveaway fue una de las experiencias más significativas.

My hands were sweaty and my heart was pounding. I walked through the school hallways without recognizing anything around me. Everything was strange, unfamiliar, a different world. Whispers surrounded me like a constant echo, and anxiety was slowly consuming me. I felt like I didn’t belong there, as if my presence were a mistake.

Something inside me was silently crumbling. I just wanted to return to the familiar, to the life I had before I arrived here, to a place where I wouldn’t have to learn to breathe all over again.

I remember one day, in ninth grade, my eyes fell on a poster stuck to the wall. It said Chicas Verdes. Written in Spanish were words that were simple yet deeply meaningful to me at that moment. Below, in English, it read “gardening club.” I didn’t know exactly what that meant or what a club like that did, but that didn’t stop me.

Amid the fear and confusion, I felt curious. Something about that name drew me in, helped me begin to accept my new reality, and imagine a different space, a place where maybe I could start to feel like I belonged. Today, in my senior year, I’m still here. Chicas Verdes is the club that saw me grow as a person, that witnessed my changes, and helped me strengthen my leadership skills. I no longer see it as a place where I have to work, but as part of my community. It was there that I created memories, friendships, and knowledge that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

These past four years, I’ve been filled with so much knowledge. I discovered not only that a garden could be a 84

real solution to the lack of healthy food, but also a refuge.

Being surrounded by nature, seeing the soil in my hands, watching the seeds sprout, and taking care of the plants, I learned about planting. It was difficult, but with patience and responsibility, I was able to contribute to the garden and become a part of it. Watching our produce grow from scratch taught me that eating natural foods wasn’t just possible, but also beautiful, educational, and good for the planet. The garden became a space where not only plants grew but I grew as a person too, and when I used to feel lost with Chicas Verdes, I found my place and my sense of belonging.

Over time, I learned more, got more involved, and my knowledge grew, so I took the initiative and ran for an officer position on the food access committee. Being part of this committee made me understand that access to food is a basic need and an act of care toward others.

Participating in the food giveaways was one of the most meaningful experiences.

Strong Roots, Strong Gardens Healthy gardens begin with healthy soil. Soil is more than just dirt, it is full of nutrients and tiny living organisms that help plants grow strong. When gardeners add compost, leaves, and other organic materials to the soil, they create a rich foundation that supports plant life. Feeding the soil helps the soil feed the plants Gardening also teaches patience. Seeds take time to sprout, roots grow quietly beneath the surface, and plants slowly reach toward the sun. Even when we cannot see immediate changes, growth is happening. With sunlight, water, and care, small seeds transform into vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

A thriving garden is a team effort between nature and people. Plants rely on sunlight for energy and water to stay strong, while 86

beneficial insects like bees and ladybugs help pollinate flowers and protect crops.

When we observe our gardens, care for the soil, and welcome nature’s helpers, we create spaces where plants and people can grow together.

Para mí, el marketing en Chicas Verdes nunca ha sido solo obtener la atención de los estudiantes, sino compartir nuestra historia con la comunidad de una forma honesta y consciente. Desde el inicio entendí que nuestra marca, tanto personal como colectiva, es una herramienta para generar cambio y transformar nuestro entorno. Poco a poco aprendimos juntas que el pensamiento de las generaciones jóvenes y futuras se construye cuando mostramos quiénes somos de verdad. Y cuando, a pesar de las dudas y los retos, seguimos avanzando con cada proyecto. No seguimos tendencias por moda ni mantenemos una imagen superficial; cada acción que tomamos nace de una conexión genuina con nuestra realidad y con las necesidades de nuestra comunidad.

Mi experiencia personal influyó directamente en la creación de estrategias de marketing, ya que siempre supe que cada folleto, podcast o material promocional debía tener un propósito claro y un lenguaje accesible. A través de mi clase de literatura aprendí que un lenguaje excesivamente complejo puede ser contraproducente y distorsionar el mensaje, por lo que prioricé la claridad y la intención en cada iniciativa. El propósito de Chicas Verdes siempre ha sido el cambio y la comunidad: esparcir conciencia, crecer, aprender y equivocarnos juntas.

Hemos llevado esta visión a la acción mediante podcasts liderados por estudiantes, carteles y vallas publicitarias que anuncian nuestros eventos, videos y publicaciones en redes sociales, talleres para padres y niños guiados por miembros del club, y anuncios que promueven nuestros food giveaways, field trips y community closet events.

For me, marketing Chicas Verdes has never been just about grabbing students’ attention, but about sharing our story with the community in an honest and mindful way. From the very beginning, I understood that our brand, both personal and collective, is a tool for driving change and transforming our surroundings. Little by little, we learned together that the minds of young and future generations are built when we show who we really are. And when, despite doubts and obstacles, we keep moving forward with every project. We don’t follow trends just because they’re in style, nor do we maintain a superficial image; every action we take stems from a genuine connection to our reality and the needs of our community.

My personal experience directly influenced the development of marketing strategies, as I always knew that every flyer, podcast, or promotional material needed to have a clear purpose and accessible language.

Through my literature class, I learned that overly complex language can be counterproductive and distort the message, so I prioritized clarity and intention in every initiative. The purpose of Chicas Verdes has always been change and community: to spread awareness, grow, learn, and make mistakes together. We’ve put this vision into action through student-led podcasts, posters, and advertisements for our events, videos, and social media posts, as well as workshops for parents and children led by club members, and announcements promoting our food giveaways, field trips, and community closet events.

From my role as marketing officer, I contributed to the club’s long-term growth by consistently highlighting its strengths through presentations to other students, foundations, and community members. I ensured that all promotional materials maintained a clear identity consistent with Chicas Verdes’ values. The obstacles I faced allowed me to develop a mindful style of leadership, learning to recognize and regulate my emotions to solve problems rationally, lead with empathy, and be mindful of the impact of my words. En Chicas Verdes, el crecimiento no ocurre solo en la tierra. Ocurre en cada persona que forma parte del proyecto. Cada planta que se cuida es también una lección compartida, cada jornada de trabajo es una oportunidad para aprender a convivir, escuchar y construir un equipo. Entre risas, ideas nuevas e innovaciones compartidas, el jardín se transforma en un lugar seguro.

Crecer junto a otros ha enseñado que el crecimiento personal no siempre es un camino individual, sino un proceso colectivo, donde apoyarse, equivocarse y avanzar acompañados se vuelve parte del aprendizaje.

Aquí en nuestro jardín, Chicas Verdes, no solo florecen semillas, sino que también florecen personas, vínculos y versiones más fuertes de quienes somos.

Como en el jardín, cada proceso necesita más de una mano para florecer. Recuerdo el día que llegué a Chicas Verdes, un 14 de octubre del 2025. Era un día soleado, tranquilo y encantador. Recuerdo que aquella vez que entré a ese jardín fue un sentimiento muy bonito, conocí al grupo de Chicas Verdes. Ese mismo día había una reunión en un salón, así que fuimos directamente para allá. Nos dieron la introducción de un paseo a Ballona Wetlands, que sinceramente no tenía idea de que esos lugares tan hermosos existían acá en Los Ángeles.

Además, pude cruzar palabras con otros compañeros en ese momento y también conocer a nuevas personas allí. De ahí todos nos fuimos al jardín, antes de salir del salón me dieron mi libreta para mi estadía en este espacio verde y de comunidad bonita. Me dieron un mini recorrido por las camas, los espacios, la casita verde que 94

es donde se almacenan las plantas, semillas, materiales para jardinería e incluso carteles para decorar tus camas.

El primer día me asignaron una cama, en la cama ya habían algunos frutos: romero y maracuyá. Habia un arbol muy grande de Maracuya y lo que me indicó Ms. Lupe fue que yo cuidaria de aquel fruto para que en cierta temporada brotara. De igual manera me presento a Mrs. Flores quien me ayudó a seleccionar las semillas que eran compatibles con los frutos que ya estaban plantados en la cama. Recuerdo haber plantado tres elotes, tres cebollas y dos sandías. En el momento que plante las semillas, de repente sentí que algo andaba mal. Sentí unas cosquillas por mis piernas, resulta que se había escapado un nido de hormigas por los agujeros que había en la cama. Felizmente no tenía muchas en mis piernas pero mis zapatos casi terminan siendo devorados, así que en ese momento llame a Ms. Lupe, y le comente lo que estaba pasando. Ms. Lupe estaba sorprendida de igual manera pero ella tenía la solución para reducir esa población de hormigas: un vasito con vinagre. Dejé el vaso con vinagre reposando durante ese día, no podía hacer mucho en mi cama debido a que estaba todo repleta de hormigas. Pienso que mi bienvenida fue algo auténtica y extraordinaria, siempre recordaré como el primer día casi me atacan las hormigas. Cada vez que iba a Chicas Verdes le regaba agua para que mis plantitas siguieran creciendo. Un dato curioso es que al lado de mi cama había una planta o flor que atraía a muchas abejas, al principio me había sorprendido pero de ahí me acostumbre y les agarre cariño, mientras no les hicieras nada ellas tampoco. Cabe resaltar que para ese entonces era temporada de verano, aún, por lo cual sus visitas eran más constantes de lo normal.

Mi cariño por la comunidad de Chicas Verdes tuvo un 95

rol muy importante en mi vida, tanto en mi crecimiento personal como social. Muy aparte de la enseñanza en el jardín que es algo nuevo e increíble que aprendí a lo largo de estos meses; también conocí a personas asombrosas en esta bella comunidad. Para mi, Chicas Verdes no es solo un proyecto que consiste en cumplir con las tareas solicitadas, el cuidado del jardín, o con el hecho de asistir a las reuniones para obtener horas comunitarias. La verdadera conexión y sentimiento que esta comunidad me generó podría decirse que es algo inefable. Como mencioné anteriormente, este gran aprecio y admiración que siento por esta comunidad verde no se limita a solo un grupo de personas, sino que representa una experiencia colectiva. Cada persona que forma parte del jardín me ha brindado la sensación de pertenecer a un lugar donde es posible expresarse libremente, convivir, aprender disciplina y comprender el verdadero valor del trabajo en equipo. A través de dinámicas, juegos colaborativos y experiencias compartidas, el grupo se vuelve más cercano, más humano y más unido.

Cada reunión, cada atardecer, es una experiencia nueva.

Aun recuerdo aquel paseo que fuimos todos a Ballona Wetlands, éramos una gran multitud, todos estudiantes con ansias de salir del colegio pero por supuesto de conocer y aprender de los humedales. Aquella vez había invitado a una amiga que no era parte de esta comunidad pero aun así, ella decidió acompañarme y hasta el día de hoy ella recuerda aquel día como una salida para volver a conectar con la naturaleza. Sin duda alguna diría que ese paseo sigue teniendo un gran impacto en mis recuerdos junto a Chicas Verdes. Las memorias y momentos nunca se olvidan, la construcción de esta bella comunidad cada vez trasciende más y más. No solo por los Giveaways donde nos reunimos para brindar los mejores productos 96

In Chicas Verdes, growth doesn’t happen only in the soil.

It happens in every person who is part of the project.

Every plant we care for is also a shared lesson, and every workday is an opportunity to learn to live together, listen, and build a team. Between laughter, new ideas, and shared innovations, the garden becomes a safe space. Growing alongside others has taught us that personal growth is not always an individual journey, but a collective process, where supporting one another, making mistakes, and moving forward together becomes part of the learning experience. Here in our garden, with Chicas Verdes, not only do seeds bloom, but people, connections, and stronger versions of who we are blossom.

Just like in the garden, every process needs more than one hand to flourish. I remember the day I arrived at Chicas Verdes, October 14, 2025. It was a sunny, peaceful, and lovely day. I remember that the moment I stepped into that garden, it was a beautiful feeling to meet the Chicas Verdes group for the first time. That same day there was a meeting in a room, so we went straight there. They gave us an introduction to a trip to Ballona Wetlands. I honestly had no idea such beautiful places existed here in Los Angeles. Plus, I was able to chat with other members at that time and also meet new people there.

From there, we all went to the garden. Before leaving the classroom, they gave me a notebook for my time in this beautiful green community space. They gave me a quick tour of the garden beds, the different areas, and the little 98

green house where they store plants, seeds, gardening supplies, and even signs to decorate your garden beds.

On the first day, they assigned me a garden bed. There were already some plants in the bed: rosemary and passion fruit. There was a very large passion fruit tree and what Ms. Lupe instructed me to do was to take care of the plant so it would bear fruit during a certain season.

She also introduced me to Ms. Flores, who helped me select seeds that were compatible with the plants already growing in the bed. I remember planting three corn plants, three onions, and two watermelons. The moment I planted the seeds, I suddenly felt that something was wrong. I felt a tickling sensation on my legs. It turned out that a colony of ants had escaped through the holes in the garden bed.

Luckily, there weren’t many on my legs, but my shoes were almost devoured, so I called Ms. Lupe and told her what was happening. Ms. Lupe was just as surprised, but she had the solution to reduce the ant population: a small cup of vinegar. I left the glass of vinegar sitting out for the rest of the day. I couldn’t do much in bed because it was swarming with ants. I think my welcome was pretty authentic and extraordinary. I’ll always remember how the ants almost attacked me on the first day. Every time I went to Chicas Verdes, I’d water my little plants so they’d keep growing. An interesting fact is that next to my bed there was a plant or flower that attracted many bees. At first, I was surprised, but then I got used to them and grew fond of them. As long as you didn’t bother them, they wouldn’t bother you either. It’s worth noting that it was still summer at the time, so the bees were visited more often than normal.

My love for the Chicas Verdes community played a very important role in my life, both in my personal and social growth. Aside from the gardening lessons, which were 99

something new and incredible that I learned over these months, I also met amazing people in this beautiful community. For me, Chicas Verdes isn’t just a project that involves completing assigned tasks, tending the garden, or attending meetings to earn community service hours.

The genuine connection and sense of belonging this community fostered in me, you could say, is indescribable.

As I mentioned earlier, the deep appreciation and admiration I feel for this green community isn’t limited to just a group of people, but represents a collective experience. Every person who is part of the garden has given me a sense of belonging to a place where it’s possible to express oneself freely, live together, learn discipline, and understand the true value of teamwork.

Through group activities, collaborative games, and shared experiences, the group grows closer, more human, and more united.

Every meeting, every sunset, is a new experience. I still remember that trip we all took to Ballona Wetlands.

We were a large crowd, all students eager to get out of school but, of course, to explore and learn about the wetlands. At that time, I had invited a friend who wasn’t part of this community, but she decided to come along anyway, and to this day she remembers that day as an opportunity to reconnect with nature. Without a doubt, I would say that this field trip continues to have a profound impact on my memories with Chicas Verdes.

The memories and moments are never forgotten, and the foundation of this beautiful community transcends more and more. Not only because of the giveaways where we come together to offer the best products or clothing to others, but also because of the collective spirit that every member of Chicas Verdes embodies. Thanks to them, the unforgettable experiences, the gatherings, and the shared 100

My Voice Has Made An Impact Dairreon B.

Growing up, I always wanted to use my voice to lead others. My first time public speaking was in 2022. I was 14 years old when I spoke at my great grandmother’s funeral.

I had written her a poem, inspired to touch my family and her other beloved ones’ hearts about the importance of not taking our life for granted.The morning of the funeral I had planned on bringing a written version of my poem.

By the time I got in, I realized I had forgotten my paper version. It was my turn to be the poet and everyone was already looking at me and expecting me to say something.

I was nervous for a quick second about not having my written version. I decided to just speak my truth with a serious urgency of emotion and it brought me confidence.

After I spoke my lines everyone was stunned and complimented me after the service. From that moment, I just felt good about using my voice and my confidence was rising.

Years later in 2025, the program manager of Chicas Verdes nominated me to be the guest speaker at the Youtube theater for the Girls Build summit with an audience of 6,000 people.

On the day of the event, I got really nervous once I got on the bus. Reality started hitting me. On the bus ride I had a lot of support and encouragement to give this speech. I was still pretty nervous the moment that I got off the bus and I saw so many school buses pulling in the stadium.

I knew that from that moment I was given a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a positive impact on others lives.

I was given a wrist band and led by security to the backstage vip room. I went over my script for my speech.

One of my tasks was to welcome Diana Simmons, a young woman in her STEM career. There were other guest speakers and celebrities ranging from The Sparks athletes, high school students to newscasters. I had the opportunity to meet Ashley Mcmackey backstage, the ABC 7 news caster, as she was setting up her ringlight to film. I casually went up to her and complimented her. It was a beautiful experience, not because of her influence, but her openness and easy going personality. We talked about life growing up and different career pathways.

Eventually, other speakers who were also high school students from other schools were about to speak and I cheered them on and asked if I could pray for them and everyone was happy and felt uplifted. I watched the teens go on from the backstage TV and I felt so encouraged seeing and hearing them speak with so much confidence.

After about 20 minutes of speeches, it was my turn to go on stage.

I knew the moment I was led by the stage manager to the stage that I was going to make it and do big things in life. It was a surreal moment. I had to wait patiently for another guest speaker to introduce me while I was in the dark by the stage waiting to walk out once I heard my welcome. Students from my high school were in the crowd supporting me and so were the members of Chicas Verdes. I walked on the stage nervous but with humility and humbleness. Before I spoke, I looked at the crowd of thousands of students, I mostly saw young girls and I remember feeling my confidence grow because it was wild to think I would have such a massive opportunity to 103

speak in front of a large crowd. I spoke with confidence, seeing how much love and support I got when I was on the stage. I knew I was prepared for this moment so chose my words carefully to upbuild the audience for about 2 minutes. After I had finished, I walked off the stage feeling like I accomplished my biggest dream and made amazing connections and ever-lasting experiences that have played a huge role in my leadership today. This was an honor and blessing from God himself. Thanks to Chicas Verdes, I was able to be myself and also discover the deeper parts of my voice as a leader.

From Learning to Leading: My Journey Toward Community Impact Melissa C., Alumni As a first-generation college student deeply committed to both academic growth and community involvement, I am focused on building a meaningful and successful career path. My academic journey has allowed me to explore not only science, but also informed the responsibility I feel to serve others, which Chicas Verdes provided me with many opportunities to do so. I am passionate about learning skills that will prepare me for future professional opportunities while empowering me to give back to my community in impactful and lasting ways.

Throughout my academic and leadership experiences, I have continued to apply essential skills that have shaped my confidence and growth, including public speaking, effective communication, strategic planning, organization, and the ability to execute tasks successfully.

The skills have been instrumental in helping me navigate challenging environments, collaborate with diverse groups, and take on leadership roles with confidence.

They have strengthened my ability to clearly express ideas, manage responsibilities efficiently, and remain adaptable skills that continue to support my academic success and personal development.

One of the biggest impacts that Chicas Verdes had on me was the many opportunities it provided for both personal and professional growth. One experience that truly changed my life was speaking in front of more than 6,000 people. This opportunity opened many doors for me and helped me realize that I can achieve anything I put my mind into. Through Chicas, I also learned valuable 109

information about the environment and how it affects our daily lives, especially our health and what we put into our bodies. Because of Chicas Verdes, I was able to grow as a person and make a positive impact in other people’s lives. Now, I am a student at the University of California, Riverside, where I am pursuing a degree in Biology.

The advice I would give to current students is to step out of your comfort zone and do what makes you happiest.

Take time to engage with nature, as it can help clear your mind and lower stress levels. Make an effort to learn about the environment and work to change habits that have a negative impact on it. Most importantly, share what you learn with others so together you can create a positive and lasting impact on your community and the environment.

Learning Rooted in the Garden Andy R., Alumni

When people think of high school clubs, we often imagine something casual, a space to spend time after school.

For me, Chicas Verdes was never just a place to talk with friends. It became one of the most formative educational experiences of my life, particularly through my role as Administrator of the Food Access Committee.

In South Los Angeles, conversations about sustainability cannot be separated from conversations about access.

I came to understand this deeply because I had experienced a different relationship with food growing up in a small countryside town in southern Honduras, where fresh produce was consistently on our table due to my family’s involvement in agriculture. After moving to the United States, I entered neighborhoods where corner stores were more common than grocery stores. Attending an under-resourced high school in South LA, I began to notice the absence of green spaces I had once taken for granted. Fresh food insecurity was no longer abstract; it became both personal and structural.

Through Chicas Verdes, planting and maintaining the school garden, creating watering and weeding schedules, and organizing workshops on gardening, cooking, and food access education, I began to understand that food access is not simply about charity. It is about empowerment. The act of growing food, teaching others how to cultivate it, and distributing it with intention reframed sustainability as community resilience.

Chicas Verdes also taught me that leadership requires 111

both empathy and structure. It demanded discipline, balancing my academic workload while helping set up the community closet and monthly produce giveaways in the Senior Quad. It meant coordinating with partners like Anthem, determining how much produce to put in each bag, tracking attendance, and staying after school to break down tables and clean up. After every event, we required reflection on what worked, what did not, and how we could improve. Through that process, I learned that effective leadership is not symbolic; it is operational.

To be a Chicas Verdes student meant building systems where people feel seen, heard, and supported. It meant creating space for students who might not usually speak up and recognizing that in underrepresented schools, many students carry responsibilities beyond academics.

Leadership must account for that reality. Chicas Verdes fundamentally changed how I see education. In a school system that was often systematically under-resourced, the Food Access Committee became a space of applied learning through data tracking, event planning, public speaking, community health education, and collaborative problem-solving. It demonstrated that students in South LA are not lacking in ambition or intelligence; we often navigate structural barriers while still striving to serve our communities.

Now, as a USC student just a few blocks away from the Chicas Verdes Garden, I still think about those produce giveaways and what they represented. They taught me that health begins long before a hospital visit. It begins with access to nutritious food, education, and community infrastructure. The seeds we planted in that school garden were literal, but they were also symbolic. They planted in me a lasting commitment to equity, public health, and 112

leadership rooted in service.

Chicas Verdes did not just teach me about sustainability.

It taught me about responsibility to my peers, to my community, and to the systems that shape our lives, and most importantly, it taught me that outgrowing a place does not mean outgrowing the duty to serve it.

Planting The Seeds Of Learning Lourdes H., Alumni

Being part of Chicas Verdes has been a very meaningful experience for me. This community focuses on caring for plants, respecting nature, and supporting our community.

Through this organization, I learned that taking care of the environment is not only a responsibility, but also a way to show love and respect for the world around us.

One of the most important things I learned in Chicas Verdes was the importance of connecting with nature. By working with plants and learning about them, I was able to better understand how nature is part of our daily lives.

Being close to plants, taking care of them, and watching them grow can also bring a sense of peace and help us appreciate our surroundings more.

In addition to caring for the environment, Chicas Verdes also focuses on helping people. As part of our activities, we prepared and distributed bags of food for families from Manual Arts High School. This experience taught me the value of solidarity, teamwork, and the importance of supporting those who need help. Knowing that our efforts could help other families make our work even more meaningful.

Even though I am now an alumni, Chicas Verdes is still an important part of me. Even if I am no longer participating in the same way, I still carry that curiosity and desire to keep learning more about nature and how we can take better care of our planet. The lessons and experiences I had in this program left a lasting impact on me and continue to inspire me.

Teach students how to plant seeds, how to care for soil, how to grow food.

But gardens have a way of teaching everyone who steps into them.

Over time, I watched students become leaders… finding confidence in their voices, in their ideas, in their ability to care for something bigger than themselves.

And somewhere along the way, I realized I was growing too.

The patience we practice in the garden, the responsibility we carry for the land, the community we build together… these lessons belong to all of us.

Long before this school stood here, this land grew beans under the California sun.

Today it grows something just as important.

Young people learning who they are and who they can become.

This book holds the stories of that growth.

And I am grateful that my roots have grown alongside theirs.

I was born and raised in South Central, Los Angeles, just a few blocks from the garden and school where it all began and now flourishes with amazing opportunities.

Back when I was a student at Manual Arts High School, the garden was abandoned. I had never stepped foot inside because no one tended to it, and it felt like a space forgotten by everyone. In my world, I never had the opportunity to fully explore my connection to nature until I went looking for it as a young adult.

After graduating in 2016, I moved roughly 200 miles away to the small town of Merced for university. The change was immediate and striking. I had never lived surrounded by so much green space. The air felt lighter, the environment calmer, and nature was suddenly something I could experience every day instead of something I only saw in passing. Growing up in the city, I became used to a landscape of concrete, traffic, and pollution. Access to nature was limited, and green spaces were few and far between. Arriving in Merced felt like stepping into an entirely different world, one where the natural environment was not hidden but all around me. As I began exploring the outdoors like walking through parks, noticing the plants, and feeling the quiet of open space, I discovered a deep sense of beauty and peace. It was a feeling that stayed with me, and one I quickly realized I would never grow tired of. That experience sparked a lasting curiosity and passion for nature that continues to shape the way I see the world today.

When 2020 hit, everything changed. Plans vanished overnight, and the future felt uncertain for everyone. The pandemic didn’t just shift my life, it shifted the world.

After Merced, I thought I’d move somewhere new, maybe upstate or even out of state. Instead, life led me back home to Los Angeles, right in the middle of lockdown.

Surrounded by isolation, I felt small, almost helpless, watching the world struggle with challenges that seemed beyond my control.

It was during that uncertain time that I came across Chicas Verdes, a club at Manual Arts High School that I had followed on social media for a few years. One day, I saw a post on instagram asking for volunteers to help with a weekly produce giveaway. Something inside me stirred. I wasn’t entirely sure how it worked, but I decided to show up one Wednesday anyway.

Little did I know that a single decision would end up changing everything.

I still remember my first shift volunteering. The sense of community I felt was overwhelming in the best way possible. It was the very thing I had been searching for during such an isolating time. And finding it in the neighborhood I once left behind made it even more meaningful. Week after week, I helped hand out fresh fruits and vegetables to families who needed them most, while the world seemed to pause. The long walkup and drive-thru lines became a lifeline for many in my community. But in many ways, they became a lifeline for me too. Eventually, when I found a job, I had only one request, I needed Wednesdays off. I wanted to continue showing up to volunteer in my community. What started as something small by simply offering my time with 118

no expectation in return, quickly became something much bigger;something that grounded me. I began to understand the deeper impact of what Chicas Verdes was doing. It wasn’t just about distributing food, it was about restoring dignity, creating access, and building community.

I knew it was something I wanted to continue being a part of.

A pivotal figure in my journey is Bari Applebaum, our Executive Director. When I first met her, she was a Chemistry and Health teacher at Manual Arts, but she was so much more than that, she was an inspiration.

She deeply believed in empowering young people to recognize their connection to nature, their communities, and themselves. From the beginning, I felt that belief in the way she showed up, and over time, I found myself growing through her encouragement and support.

As the weeks passed, we continued distributing bags of fresh produce, our bond grew stronger. What started as simple acts of service began to feel like something much bigger. As schools reopened, our weekly giveaways could no longer take place in the parking lot. Where some might have seen an ending, Bari saw an opportunity.

She envisioned something greater, transforming Chicas Verdes into a program that could reach more students and create lasting impact. She had already begun that work, bringing her students into the garden space that once sat abandoned at Manual Arts, guiding them as they cultivated, restored, and cared for it. But the question became: how could this grow into something even more?

How could we build a program that any young person could access? One that would empower them, no matter where they come from, to care for their communities and the earth?

When she offered me a role in building that vision, I didn’t hesitate. Seeing the curriculum she had created, I felt inspired and deeply aligned with the mission. I remember saying, “Let’s do it,” and meaning it with my whole heart. What began as an idea has now grown into something we are incredibly proud of. Today, we reach hundreds of students and families each year. We are now partnering with nine schools and different communities to design, build, and sustain gardens that serve as outdoor classrooms, sources of food, and spaces of connection.

Through a focus on environmental justice and healthy practices, students begin to understand their role in caring for the planet and their communities.

Returning to Manual Arts after many years and helping nurture young people’s connection to nature truly feels like a full-circle moment I could have never imagined. The garden that was once overlooked and abandoned is now a thriving, living classroom. It holds the roots of this entire journey. It’s the place where it all began. It was our first, our “baby,” the space where we learned, made mistakes, and kept growing anyway. Every lesson, every challenge, and every small success in that garden helped shape what Chicas Verdes has become today. A safe and vibrant space where students learn to care for the earth and for one another, while also creating ideas that uplift and strengthen their community.

Every time I connect with a student or hear their story, I see a reflection of my younger self. While I didn’t have the opportunity to fully explore my relationship with nature at their age, it means everything to me to now create that opportunity for them. To witness their growth, their curiosity, and their sense of pride reminds me why this work matters.

Mission: 826LA is dedicated to unlocking and cultivating the creative power of writing for students ages 6 to 18, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

How we advance our mission: A nonprofit organization, our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind, we provide after-school tutoring in all subjects, evening and weekend workshops, in-school programs, field trips, college access, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.

Tutoring From Monday to Thursday, students attend 826LA for free individual tutoring in all subjects. Students receive homework help and write stories based on prompts. Students submit their writing for inclusion in chapbooks, which 826LA publishes throughout the year. To celebrate students’ hard work, 826LA unveils these chapbooks at book release parties, where students read their work to thunderous applause from their volunteers, families, and peers.

Write On! After School (WO!AS) Monday through Thursday, we offer after-school tutoring to our younger students ages 5 to 11. Students work one-on-one with trained volunteers to receive homework and writing support.

TNT Tutoring On Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings, we offer after-school tutoring to our teen students. Students work with volunteers on homework, writing, and college preparedness.

In-Schools and Writers’ Rooms Because not all students can come to one of 826LA’s writing labs, 826LA brings specially trained volunteers into under-resourced public schools. The volunteers provide one-on-one assistance with writing projects. 826LA works with teachers to craft projects designed to engage students while targeting curricular issues. In addition to visiting many schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District each year, 826LA hosts Writers’ Rooms at Manual Arts High School, Roosevelt High School, and Venice High School.

Workshops 826LA’s Workshops bring students together with artists, writers, and professionals for creative collaboration and development. Whether the subject is flash fiction, playwriting, or preparing for the AI singularity, our workshops foster creativity while strengthening writing skills. This includes our Summer Writers Workshop and monthly Sunday workshops at the Hammer Museum.

Whether the subject is flash fiction, playwriting, or preparing for the AI singularity, our workshops foster creativity while strengthening writing skills. This includes our Summer Writers Workshop and monthly Sunday workshops at the Hammer Museum.

College and Career Access Programs Our College and Career Access Program is designed to support students in their journey toward higher education and career success. The program culminates in two major events each year. In the Fall, the emphasis shifts to college applications, where students receive one-on-one assistance from specially trained volunteers to enhance their application writing. In the Spring, the emphasis shifts to scholarship applications, where again students are paired with dedicated volunteers to craft compelling scholarship essays.

Additionally, our career access initiative offers robust internship programs, providing valuable work experience for many high school students. This comprehensive support system ensures our students are well-prepared for both academic and professional achievements.
