Introduction

It is a known blessing that stories start young. On the playground, as slides become portals shooting into space. In the grocery store, as the tiled floor transforms into bubbling lava. Sprawled out on the grass, as clouds twist into the shapes of dinosaurs.
“Do You See What I See?” crafted by the student authors of 74th Street Elementary, is filled to the brim with this youthful and boundless imagination.
For the second time, 826LA had the pleasure of partnering with 74th Street Elementary School to publish their students, creating the book you hold now. During this year’s partnership, the 1st and 2nd grade classes each wrote the beginning of a story together before branching off individually to continue it, generating their own unique characters, settings, and plots. The 2nd graders, specifically, took on a special mission as Story Detectives to piece together half-eaten clues from a manuscript a dinosaur mistook for a snack.
Surprise, relief, humor, and joy are scattered across every page. In the story written by Ms. BrissetClaxton’s 1st graders, you’ll meet a rainbow-dressed stone, head held high from never losing a game of rock, paper, scissors.
In Lewis A.’s story, you’ll learn of a place that “holds a billion milkways.”
Uncovered by the Clue Makers of Ms. McGhee’s 2nd graders, you’ll receive specific directions to a special headquarters: to the east, down the road, and to the left of the purple octopus.
And in Brielle B.’s writing, you’ll be reminded to persevere after faltering because though her character felt sad that he slipped, “he kept on going on an adventure.”

Jet’s World: The Magical Mountain of Gems, PART
Ms. Brissett-Claxton’s Class
1
Once upon a time, there was a stone who wore a rainbow dress with rainbow high heels. The stone had arms and legs, with hair that was long enough to reach the ground. The stone’s name was Jet. Jet felt happy because she had never lost a game of rock, paper, scissors.
On that day, Jet was playing rock, paper, scissors with her friend Christina. She was playing rock when a portal appeared. This portal was light blue like the sky. The shape of the portal was a circle as big as the Read Aloud counter in Ms. Brissett-Claxton’s classroom, or about the size of a seven-year-old kid.
When Jet got close to the portal, she heard a “shhhhhhh” sound like the ocean and she smelled a hot dog. Little waves moved through the portal like fish swimming through water. Jet shouted, “BRUH.” She started wondering if she would see a dolphin in there…
Jet decided to go through the portal and it started to open slowly. It took 100 hours to open! Because it was taking so long, she decided to sleep outside until it opened. When she could finally go through, she started to feel slime. As the slime cleared, she realized she had stepped into a brand new world.
Someone new was there to greet her…

Their name was Sunshine.
They wore feathers.
They felt happy because she got treats.
Her big dream was to get 1,000 treats.
They were in McDonald’s.
The weather was sunny. All around, there was food. They could hear “Vroom!” from a car.
The new place made them feel scared.

She wore fancy clothing with high heels.
She felt happy because she was a queen all day every day.
Her big dream was to meet Taylor Swift and have a sleepover with her.

They wore a dress that said, “Love.”
They felt happy because they made a new friend.
They were in a concert.
The weather was cold and chilly.
All around, there was a crowd.
They could hear screams of joy because the songs were beautiful.

All around there, there were balloons and birds.

Jet’s World: The Magical Mountain of Gems, part 2
Ms. Brissett-Claxton’s Class
As they explored the portal, they realized they could not get back out because it was blocked by a mountain! The mountain was a hiking mountain made of different gems.
If they touched a pink gem, they got zapped by electricity. If they touched a sky blue gem, it covered everything in glitter. If they touched a yellow gem, they would get the speed of light. If they touched a red gem, it would create fire as hot as lava.
In the end…

They flew because Sunshine is a bird and is a grownup and they flew to the portal.
Sabrina Carpenter said, “I was trapped for 1,000,000 years.”
Ariana Grande said, “I need help.”
They were gonna be friends. They don’t know but got an idea to get out.

They asked Bite to come and make a ladder. Then it took one second to climb the ladder because Bite gave them the yellow gems.

They used the yellow gems to run up the mountain top. They felt happy because they went to go home.

They went to the top and they saw the exit. They did not touch gems. They felt happy because they got to the exit.

Toby the Adventure Dog, PART 1
Ms. Collins’ Class
Once upon a time, there was a bulldog puppy who was as big as the book, Oh, Charles. His name was Toby and he wore sweats, a Mickey Mouse shirt, and a black belt. Toby also wore light blue shoes, the color of the planet Uranus. One day, Toby was doing his favorite trick, rolling over. This made him feel excited so he started jumping and running around. While he was running around a portal appeared - gasp!
It was purple, orange, and triangular. At the entrance, there was a bowl of dog food with chocolate ice cream, cheese pizza, and chicken. Toby got close to the bowl of food and heard a “whooooo” sound coming from the portal. It felt cold.
Toby said, “This portal is very cold. Brrrrr!”
When he peeked inside, he saw a dragon, a dinosaur, a cat, and a shark! Then, he saw a tennis ball.
“Ooo, I want to go play with that,” Toby said. When he stepped into the portal to get the tennis ball, it got even colder just like the planet Uranus. All of a sudden, he heard branches cracking. When he turned around to see who it was, no one was there!
“Hello, Toby,” a voice said. Someone new was there to greet him.
Their name was KK.
They wore stitch pants and a stitch shirt.
They felt happy because he saw somebody.
Their big dream was to have a big dog house.
They were in Starbucks.
The weather was hot hot hot and sunny.
All around, there were strawberries.
They could hear coffee and hot chocolate dripping.
This new place made them feel happy.

Their name was Tom.
They wore a suit.
They felt happy because he was happy he did a trick.
Their big dream was to be a hero.
They were in Tatole.
The weather was sunny.

Toby the Adventure Dog, PART 2
Ms. Collins’ Class
They went to find out who was making the noises. They collected a flashlight, a tent, binoculars, and hearing aids (so they could hear things that were far away). They put all this stuff in their backpack with different snacks such as Oreos, Nerds, ice cream, chips, popcorn, cake, fruits, and vegetables.
First, they looked for the noise by following the sounds. It took them to a dark cave - gasp! When they got to the cave, Toby said, “It’s scary…”
All of a sudden, a pile of snow appeared.

They was melting the snow and went to bed. They felt scared because they heard the noise. He went to bed.

They ran. Then the snow melted. They felt happy because they went through.

August the Astronaut and The Lava Portal, PART 1
Mr. Mirabal’s Class
Once upon a time, there was an astronaut named August. August wore super space shoes made out of gold and a space suit made of powers. The power this suit held was the power to turn everything into marshmallows! August had already turned the moon, the sun, their spaceship, their house, and their apples into marshmallows!
One day, August was doing their favorite thing–painting a treehouse– when a portal appeared – gasp! It was a black, purple, and blue rectangle. Around the rectangle was a circle covered in fire.
When August got close to the portal, they heard birds chirping, raccoons screeching, and a dinosaur roaring. It smelled like a garbage can, a dirty ocean, and a little like a turtle.
When August got close to the portal, they said, “I’m a good person. This is going to be easy to get through.”
August walked into the portal and it felt smooth like a carpet and super cold like ice cubes.
On the other side, there was someone new to greet them...

August the Astronaut and The Lava Portal, PART 2
Mr. Mirabal’s Class
As they explored, they had to watch out for the bear traps and lava inside the portal! There was lava in the middle, bear traps down the hall, and a huge circle of lava around the middle lava. When August saw all this lava, they said confidently, “This is going to be easy just like the portal!”
At the other end of the lava, there were ghosts with treasure. The ghosts had a PS5 with a golden controller, gold coins, red diamonds, and money!

part two:
The Story Detectives of Ms. Johnson’s Class
Once upon a time, there was a team of story detectives from Ms. Johnson’s class at 74th Street Elementary School. These detectives were very official. They carried magnifying glasses with them and wore armor made of metal and diamonds. They also took with them a telescope, a microscope, a notepad, a pen, and a metal detector.
Their headquarters was in the ocean. The underwater headquarters was surrounded in glass with sharks, dolphins, and octopi swimming by. Inside, it was filled with notes, computers, pens, grappling hooks, and a submarine.
The detectives had a mystery to solve after Professor Barnacle’s newest book got eaten by the dinosaurs!
The detectives felt proud that they were going on this mission because they didn’t want the dinosaurs to hurt anybody. They were also proud that they survived the dinosaurs.
They waited at their headquarters for their first clue.
Then, the detectives used their character, setting, and dialogue tools to each come up with their own unique story that could have been written in the dinosaur’s snack!
In the crazy life
Amari D. Detective Alias: Dr. Maria
Once upon a time, there was a chocolate and his friend French Fries. And someway they got stuck in candy land. Old pal, French Fries, on the right hand did not look very happy.
And Chocolate was like, “LOOK! IT IS CANDY!”
“Umm, chocolate, I don’t think this is goooooooood.”
Then, they saw the candy land sign. “French Fries, there is ice cream.”
“Like I said, this is not good Chocolate.”
“Look, I think he stole my cookies!”
“Chocolate, just because he is a cookie, I don’t think he stole your cookies,” said French Fries.
“Yes he did.”
“No! He didn’t.”
“Hi. Ummm…who are you? Me? Oh, my name is Cookie.”
“See I told you he stole my cookies!”
“Umm, what cookies?”
“My COOKIES!”
“Let’s just be friends,” said French Fries.
“Okay okay,” said Chocolate.
They walked until they saw a portal.
It was a lot of colors–brown, blue, red, green, orange, purple, black, pink, gray, yellow.
“Wow, so much color!” said Cookie.
When they went through the portal, they felt busy, anxious, and also confident.
Then they went to the real world. In the real world, they got their real body and they got real food.

he stole my cookies
Helen C. Detective Alias: Dr. Bercilla
Once upon a time, there was chocolate. He was like excited. The French fries were confused how they were in candy land. They didn’t know where they were. They were happy because there was candy, but they came out of nowhere. There were mountains and there was frosting on the mountains. But they were happy to be there because there was candy and chocolate. Then, they saw the candy land sign.
“French Fries, there is ice cream.”
“Like I said, this is not good, Chocolate.”
“I think he stole my cookies!”
“Chocolate, just because he is a cookie, I don’t think he stole your cookies,” said French Fries.
“Yes he did.”
“No! He didn’t.”
“Hi. Ummm…who are you? Me? Oh my name is Cookie.”
“See, I told you he stole my cookies!”
“Umm, what cookies?”
“My COOKIES!”
“Let’s just be friends,” said French Fries.
“Okay okay,” said Chocolate.
They walked until they saw a portal.
It was a whole lot of colors–brown, blue, red, green, orange, purple, black, pink, gray, yellow.
“Wow, so much color!” said Cookie.
When they went through the portal, they felt busy, anxious, and also confused.
Then they went to the real world.

Larry A.
Detective Alias: Detective Larry
Once upon a time, there was a chocolate and French fries. There was a lot of chocolate in the city! There were neighbors.
The neighbors were people.
The Detective Larry was driving with Navah and saw their neighbors.
“Hi!” said Larry.
Then, Larry and Navah crashed! Then they got split up and Larry survived.
“Hooray!”
After that, I saw! Navah! Safe with her sister, Glory.

Emmanuel C. Detective Alias: Shark Ail
Once upon a time, there was a chocolate named Candy. The French fries was making a plan about how they got there?
The plan was to make the world know them.
Then, the world was full of candy and everything was candy and everyone was candy too.
Messi said, “Everyone can’t talk because everyone is candy.”
Then, Messie made Neymar come back to life and Messi’s react face was crazy when Neymar came back to life.
In the end, the Candy and French Fries were eaten by people. Messi made everyone come back to life.

Once upon a time, there was a chocolate and a French fries. They were talking about how they got there by a portal.
Then, a portal came. Then dinosaurs were on the planet to crush the world. There was a T-Rex, a pterodactyl, and a dino.
The T-Rex said, “Do you want to be my friend, dinos?”
“Sure, wanna go somewhere like the waterpark?”
“Sure T-Rex!”

“How did we get here?” Spongebob said.
“I have a plan first,” Spongebob said.
“We need to get out of here, but how?” Patrick said.
So he went in the ocean and looked up out of the ocean a little bit and saw an ocean tree and he knew that was Bikini Bottom but it took five days walking inside the ocean and then they saw Bikini Bottom and they got to Bikini Bottom.
They were happy in Bikini Bottom and then Spongebob went to the Crusty Crab but the Crusty Crab was closed.
After that, the French fries and chocolate went back home but they forgot they actually lived in the candy
world and then they went to the human world but they saw a shop and they went inside the shop. But then they got eaten!

Next, they saw a big giant broccoli and they killed the broccoli and then a portal came out the ground and then they escaped. But this is how they got out of there. They was just food. A portal just came under them–that’s how they got out the candy world.
Then, the real world started turning to candy. The trees turned cotton, then the animals turned to gummy, and the snowy mountains turned to ice and chocolate bars, then the ocean turned into jello then! The rocks turned into chocolate, then the tree branch turned into candy cane.
Spie Bellamy didn’t know what was happening. But he wanted everything to go back. The world was bad so the detectives went through the portal. Then he saw a big temple but there were guards by the temple.
Then he told the guards, “Um…why can’t I get in the temple?”
The guards said, “The only way to go in the temple is that way. That’s the only way to go.”
Then the detective found a chest. Then he went back to the temple. He put the stuff in the guards. Then he went in. Then he saw a big lollipop, then he defeated the lollipop, then a glass box fell out of the air, and he broke the glass. He got the potion before it went to the ground.
Then the world turned back to normal.
In the end, everything turned back to normal and the animals turned back and the people. Then every people cheered for Spie Bellamy.

Once upon a time, there was a team of story detectives from Ms. McGhee’s class at 74th Street Elementary School. They were on a mission to solve the mystery of the Eaten Story: a book-turnedsnack by the dinosaurs in Professor Barnacle’s timetraveling portal!
In the detectives’ backpacks, they carried magnifying glasses, a compass, a notebook, a clue map, a walkie talkie, and gloves. They wore black suits, brown hats, and brown boots. They called themselves The Clue Makers.
Their headquarters was under the sea. It was located to the east, down the road, and to the left of the purple octopus. It was made of hard stone that no one could break through. It was surrounded by colorful and mysterious coral reefs and it was filled with lots of fish.
They waited by their seaweed flip phone for their first clue…
Then, the detectives used their character, setting, and dialogue tools to each come up with their own unique story that could have been written in the dinosaur’s snack!

Next, they tried again to get out. They were so close, but someone stopped them.
“Stop there,” said the pizza.

The person who stopped them was a big pizza. He had so much topping on him and he didn’t let them go. It was a gate next to him and it was a sign. It said, “Don’t Come! Warning: You Will Never Come Out.”

The house looked like candy, but really good candy, so they ate the house!
The French fry thought that they were going to In-NOut.
Then they found a Candy Forest and they started to camp. The main characters found candy wood to make fire. Then fire came and they could make marshmallows. Then they went to bed. And then in the morning they left the Candy Forest.
As they traveled, they saw a big monster but they ran away.
They heard a scary noise and it was just them two.
“This is different than I thought,” the chocolate bar said.
“I thought we were going to In-N-Out,” French Fry said.
“This isn’t Candy Land. It’s a classroom,” the chocolate bar said.
They knew it was a classroom because there were a lot of students.
And then they came back to the forest but nothing was there. And then they came out of a portal.
The portal felt weird. They were falling six miles per hour.
Someone saved the day. That someone was awesome so the girl saved the day.
The French fry went to In-N-Out and the chocolate bar went to Candy Land. But they missed each other. So they visited each other.

Then, the fries froze him and then he went back to Candy Land. Something was wrong. Cyborg Bluey came and then a black hole spit out candy.
Cyborg Bluey said, “Hi. I’m Bluey. What’s your name?”
The chocolate bar said, “My name is Chocolate Bar.”
“My land isn’t made out of sweets,” Cyborg Bluey said. “It’s made out of mother nature.”

“Sugar. Sugar…” said Sonic. Sonic came from Green Hills where he was battling Dr. Eggman again.

Later in the black hole it was bad because first it got you, then made noise and when it made the noise, it turned to the side and then you might die which is horrible.
And then Jesus came and was like, “Nooo, all the people died.”
If you ate vegetables you were going to get abs which is awesome. If you eat too much Doritos Cheese and chocolate, you’re going to be 389 pounds. If you eat vegetables you might be 189 pounds. If you’re an adult you need to go to the gym because LeBron, Kobe, and Stephen Curry go to the gym and now they have abs and are strong.
“Broccoli says that vegetables are good for you,” Broccoli the black hole said.

Later, Jayce came and said, “What are you doing? They are alive.”
Jayce was big and tall and walking his dog. His dog was named George.
Then Jack got scared. Then Jack jumped and ran. He ran to the other side of Candy Land where they were going to build.
Jacye saved the day by saying, “I’m going to get you. I am a cop.”
“I’m the monster. My name is Jack.”
“What are you doing?” said Nelson.
“I’m so scared,” Eli said.
“I hope he does not eat us,” whispered Nelson.

Chocolate ate some of French Fries and for snack, French Fries ate some of Chocolate. But here’s the sad part. Chocolate went to the desert and melted and French Fries couldn’t help. But his food got rotten so he got rotten so he died.
Then the angels came and prayed for Chocolate and French Fries and then they woke up and French Fries was happy because he was at his world and Chocolate was sad so he wished he went to Candy Land by himself and both of them was so happy.
And then they were sucked into a big hole but they were at a school.
Chocolate was very worried. “Oh no,” he said very sadly.

The detectives had a mystery to solve after Professor Barnacle’s newest book got eaten by the dinosaurs! At their headquarters, the detectives waited for their first clue…

But the fries said, “Ahhhhhhhh!” They needed to run away from the Godzilla and go somewhere safe from the Godzilla and rest their little legs!
Then they found a chocolate river and they rested their legs and drank the chocolate and strawberry milk and fell asleep and they woke up. Chocolate ate all the chocolate river and fries ate all the strawberry milk.
“Oooooooh ooooooh. I am full and big,” Chocolate said. “Why did you do that?”
“I am sad,” said Chocolate.
Finally, they got out of Candy Land and they knocked out Godzilla the Alligator. They went to the outer space in a parachute. They ate the stars and the moon. They came home to Candy Land and ate all the candy. And got trapped in a candy trap.
In the candy trap, they went to sleep because they were full and big.
In the end, they finally worked together and they got along together. They became friends with Godzilla.

Mission
826LA is dedicated to unlocking and cultivating the creative power of writing for students ages 6 to 18, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.
How we advance our mission: A nonprofit organization, our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
With this in mind, we provide after-school tutoring in all subjects, evening and weekend workshops, in-school programs, field trips, college access, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.
All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s ability to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their own voice.
Core Values
826LA values joy in the service of achieving educational goals. Our community norms value diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. We therefore prioritize partnerships with Title 1 Schools, engagement with historically marginalized populations, and training and deploying community-based volunteers in support of our mission. As a teaching approach, we value creativity, authenticity, empathy, and lively, rigorous, and student-centered writing education. As an educational enrichment organization, we value supporting teachers, principals, and other school staff in the pursuit of excellence.
After-School Writing Programs
Mondays through Thursdays, students attend 826LA for afterschool writing programs. Students participate in community building activities, work on homework or reading with trained tutors, and of course, write! Students submit their writing for inclusion in chapbooks, which 826LA publishes twice a year. To celebrate students’ hard work, 826LA unveils these chapbooks at book release parties, where students read their work to thunderous applause from their volunteers, families, and peers.
Field Trips
During the week, 826LA invites teachers and their students to our writing labs to participate in a morning of collaboration, creativity, and writing. Whether Storytelling & Bookmaking, WellWishing & Poetry, Choose Your Own Adventure, or Memoir, field trips at 826LA support teacher curriculum and student learning by offering a safe space for students to be their most imaginative and to work on their writing skills. In a few short hours, students brainstorm, write, edit their work, and leave with something tangible—a bound book—as well as a renewed confidence in their ability to tell their stories.
In-Schools Programs & Writers’ Rooms
Because not all students can come to us, 826LA brings specially trained volunteer tutors into classrooms throughout Los Angeles. There, volunteers provide one-on-one or small group assistance with writing projects. 826LA works with teachers to craft all projects, which are designed to engage students while targeting curricular needs. In addition to visiting twenty schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District each year, 826LA has additional sites within Manual Arts High School, Roosevelt High School, and Venice High School called The 826LA Writers’ Rooms.
Workshops
826LA’s workshops bring students together with artists, writers, and professionals for creative collaboration. Whether the subject is journalism or preparing for the zombie apocalypse, our workshops foster student creativity while strengthening writing skills. This program includes two long running partnerships with Paramount Pictures and the Hammer Museum.

It is a known blessing that stories start young. On the playground, as slides become portals shooting into space. In the grocery store, as the tiled floor transforms into bubbling lava. Sprawled out on the grass, as clouds twist into the shapes of dinosaurs.
Crafted by the student authors of 74th Street Elementary, “Do You See What I See?” is filled to the brim with this youthful and boundless imagination.
For the second time, 826LA had the pleasure of partnering with 74th Street Elementary School to publish their students, creating the book you hold now. During this year’s partnership, the 1st and 2nd grade classes each wrote the beginning of a story together before branching off individually to continue it, generating their own unique characters, settings, and plots. The 2nd graders, specifically, took on a special mission as Story Detectives to piece together halfeaten clues from a manuscript a dinosaur mistook for a snack.
