CULTIVATING OUR VISION
A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear 826ers, As I reflect on this past fiscal year, I am overwhelmed by a deep sense of gratitude. 826LA―our students, staff, volunteers, donors, and the broader community―is defined by resilience. This year brought both meaningful growth and immense challenges, reminding us that the work of nurturing young voices is never linear. Like many nonprofits across the country, we felt the impact of shifting financial realities, including the loss of federal funding that has long supported critical parts of our work. These changes required us to adapt and think creatively about how to sustain our programs. And when we asked for your help, you responded with staggering generosity. Our community rallied, demonstrating its resilience and providing the support needed to close our fiscal year with a balanced budget. While those moments tested 826LA, they also clarified something essential: our mission remains as urgent as ever. In a time when uncertainty feels constant, young people continue to show up with honesty, imagination, and courage. They write about who they are, what they fear, and what they dream is possible. Their voices remind us why this work matters, not just as an educational support, but as an act of hope. As we look ahead, I carry hope borne of gratitude with me, rooted in the brilliance of our students and the stories they are brave enough to tell. Thank you for helping make this work possible. Sincerely, Jaime Balboa
Executive Director

A LETTER FROM 826LA’S BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Serving as Board President this year has been a reminder of both the challenges and the strength that defines 826LA. While the landscape around us continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: our commitment to ensuring every young person has access to free, joyful writing programs. This year affirmed something we’ve always known: when students are given space to write, create, and be heard, incredible things happen. It also reminded me how deeply this work is supported by a community of volunteers, donors, and partners who believe in the importance of uplifting young voices. Together, we’re building a stronger, more sustainable future for the next generation of storytellers. There is so much to feel hopeful about. The creativity of our students, the dedication of our tireless staff, and the strength of our community continue to carry 826LA forward. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for helping make this work possible. Onward, Karen Van Kirk
826LA Board President

NURTURING YOUNG MINDS
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS During the school year, students participate in our Write On! After School (WO!AS) or Tuesday and Thursday Night Tutoring (TNT) at our Echo Park and Mar Vista Writing Labs, where they receive homework help, reading and literacy support, and write stories based on prompts. This year, Write On! After School explored spooky stories in the fall and unlikely heroes in the spring, while TNT invited students to experiment with different genres across a range of themes, giving them freedom to dabble in different ideas and ways of expressing themselves rather than developing one central story.
9
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS Students submit their writing for inclusion in books that 826LA publishes throughout the year. Many 826LA students are also featured in publications including Epistle Literary Magazine, Illustoria, and 826 National’s Anthology. To celebrate
students’ hard work, 826LA unveils their work at book release parties, where students read aloud to thunderous applause from their volunteers, families, and peers.

WHERE WRITERS TAKE ROOT
IN-SCHOOLS AND WRITERS’ ROOMS 826LA brings specially trained volunteers directly into under-resourced public schools across Los Angeles, hosting Writers’ Rooms at Manual Arts High School, Roosevelt High School, and Venice High School, offering one-on-one support for writing projects that help develop students’ skills and confidence. We collaborate closely with educators to design projects that both engage students and address specific curricular needs. At Manual Arts, 826LA partnered with Chicas Verdes (garden club at Manual Arts High School) to create a gardening book filled with family recipes, connecting writing with food, culture, and community. At Venice High, students worked with MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán student club) on a book rooted in resilience, using writing to explore their identities and the experiences that shaped them. At Roosevelt High, 826LA reached nearly 1,000 students through projects ranging from mock interviews to a found-photos workshop in which students explored old yearbook photos. These opportunities give students practical skills while exploring creative ways to tell their stories. STUDENTS: 4,509 PUBLICATIONS: 8

GROWING THROUGH CREATIVITY
WORKSHOPS 826LA’s workshops program connects community teaching artists with students through one-time or multi-session workshops designed to spark creativity and develop writing skills. Our Summer Writers Workshop and monthly Sunday sessions at the Hammer Museum are a fun and enriching way for students to grow as writers. This year’s Summer Writers Workshop focused on mystery and suspense, culminating in a new publication, Something Called a Brick. This year, 826LA expanded access to programming in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles by partnering with the Los Angeles Public Library to bring collaborative workshops to branches across the city.
“Driven by a frenzy fueled by Cheeto withdrawals, I had managed to find the password: QW03KE9JIW02. My mom called it selective application that I could do that, but not solve the square root of 25.” –Theodore I., from the student publication Something Called a Brick

BEYOND OUR GARDEN
FIELD TRIPS During the week, 826LA invites public school teachers to bring their students to our writing labs for a morning of creativity, collaboration, and writing. In just a few hours, students brainstorm, write, edit, and leave with a tangible product, such as a bound book or a polished essay, along with newfound confidence in their storytelling abilities. For classrooms unable to visit our labs, we offer traveling field trips, bringing the 826LA experience directly to the schools. The relationships built through these programs can last well beyond a single field trip. This year, we welcomed a former 826LA student to our staff, who had been in our programs since elementary school and joined our team after completing her college degree. By creating meaningful opportunities for youth, 826LA is able to help shape what’s possible for the next generation.

GROWING TOWARD THE FUTURE
COLLEGE AND CAREER ACCESS Our College and Career Access Program is designed to support students in their journey toward higher education and career success. In the fall, students receive one-on-one assistance from volunteers in applying to college. In the spring, students are paired with dedicated volunteers to craft compelling scholarship essays. Our career access initiative offers robust internship programs that provide valuable work, along with resume-building support to help students prepare for future opportunities. This comprehensive support system ensures our students are well-prepared for both academic and professional achievements. STUDENTS: 3,402 VOLUNTEERS: 324

“It made things much easier for me. I was struggling with the flow of my essays, but their feedback helped me learn what steps and changes I needed to make to improve. The best part was being able to work with someone so positive and honest. I received help that will be for the better of my future.” —Francelli B., WRITE YOUR FUTURE STUDENT ATTENDEE 17
SUMMER IN BLOOM
SUMMER PROGRAMS Write On! Summer Camp Our summer writing camp for elementary students is the perfect way to keep their creativity flowing. Running for two weeks in June and July, with a choice of morning or afternoon sessions, the camp features a unique theme each year that sparks imagination and focuses on different forms of writing.
STUDENTS: 79
Barnacle’s Bookworms At 826LA, we believe strong storytellers are also strong readers. Barnacle’s Bookworms is our year-round literacy program designed to help young readers strengthen their reading and comprehension skills while building confidence and book joy through one-on-one support from a reading buddy, engaging literacy activities, storytelling, and hands-on creative projects.
18
While Barnacle’s Bookworms runs all year long, we place a special focus on the summer months, a time when many students are reading less and can benefit from extra support to stay engaged and keep their skills sharp.
VOICES THRIVING
YOUNG AUTHORS PODCAST The 826LA Young Authors Podcast brings student stories to life beyond the page, featuring original work by 826LA’s young writers, read by actors, comedians, and writers like Maria Bamford, Gary Gulman, Mark Evan Jackson, Lauren Weedman, and Jerrika Hinton. Each episode transforms
student storytelling into an immersive listening experience, bringing their words to life in unexpected, heartfelt, and often hilarious ways.
Meet Edna, 826LA Student Writer Edna Garcia-Cruz has been a part of the 826LA community since she was
just 8 years old, growing alongside our programs from Write On! After School, Tuesday and Thursday Night Tutoring, Summer Writers Workshop, and our Writers’ Room at Venice High School.
Over the past decade, she’s contributed to more than ten student publications, with her favorite being Purple Minions, which was featured on the Young Authors Podcast. When she’s not writing, Edna enjoys reading, spending time with friends, and shopping. This fall, she’ll begin the next chapter of her journey at UC Merced, where she plans to study psychology with the goal of becoming a therapist. For Edna, writing has always been about authenticity. Her advice to young writers is simple: “You can express yourself! It doesn’t have to make sense to other people, just you.”

PODCAST STUDENT INTERVIEW
Can you tell us a little about the piece you wrote? I wrote Purple Minions because the deadline was quickly approaching, and I still didn’t have any ideas. My volunteer, Meredith, told me to think of one thing I liked and just write everything that came to mind. That’s how Purple Minions was born. A lot of people were confused by the title, but it made sense to me. Meredith really helped me finish my piece by talking me through ideas I didn’t connect with until we found one I actually loved. We’ve worked together throughout all four years of high school, and I don’t think Purple Minions would exist without her.
What do you hope listeners take away from your piece? I hope listeners feel entertained. I mostly wrote Purple Minions as a joke, and I hope it helps people find little moments of humor in everyday life. I think it’s important to write funny pieces because so much of writing we read in school has to be analyzed so deeply. Sometimes it’s nice to read something that simply makes you happy. 20
What was it like hearing your writing read aloud on the Young Authors Podcast? My first reaction was, “OMG, they actually did it!” I was really happy, but also a little shy knowing that people were hearing my work. Having it online made it feel like, “It’s there!” I’m proud that my piece was chosen for the Young Authors Podcast. Lauren Weedman read my work and did an amazing job and made it even funnier to hear aloud.
Before this program, how did you feel about writing? Has that changed? I didn’t always like writing, but I started enjoying it as I got older. I also became more of a procrastinator, which ultimately made writing Purple Minions more stressful because I had less time to finish it. After being featured on the Young Authors Podcast, I felt more motivated to write and learned more about the kind of stories I enjoy creating. I realized I love writing funnier, cutesy pieces. I even tried a horror writing workshop, but I found that style wasn’t for me because there are so many elements you have to build to make a good horror story.
21
How has this experience changed your confidence as a writer? The experience made me feel a little more prepared and confident when speaking about my writing. I’m still shy, but now I can look back on the podcast interview and use what I learned from that experience. Before, I didn’t always want to read my work aloud at book release parties, but I would push myself to do it, especially with my friend Miranda cheering me on from the audience. After the podcast, reading aloud became easier. At the most recent book release, I even shared a poem I wrote for Miranda called Ten Years of Friendship.
What does being a young author mean to you? Being a young author means being able to express my feelings through writing and share my work with people who may not even know me. When I receive a published book at the end of the year, I feel proud because I accomplished something. I give my books to my mom, and she keeps them on a bookshelf with the ones from me and my siblings. Sometimes I think, “Wow, I’m probably the only published author in this room,” and that makes me feel proud of myself. 826LA has helped me become more confident in my writing and showed me that writing can be more than just school assignments. I’ve learned what kinds of stories I love creating and reading, especially romance and fantasy.

Together, we celebrated the complexity, resilience, and joy of womanhood through the stories only our community can tell.
LA Marathon This year, 826LA hit the streets of Los Angeles for the LA Marathon! Ten incredible runners joined Team 826LA, turning every mile into support for young writers across the city. Together, they raised nearly $20,000 to help unlock the creative power of students through free writing and tutoring programs. 24
Jeni’s Ice Cream We scooped up a sweet new partnership with Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams for 826LA’s very first Ice Cream Social! This event brought the community together for a delicious day of connection while raising funds and awareness for our programs. Corporate partnerships just like this prove that supporting young writers can be creative and a little bit sweet!
Holiday Mart The holidays arrived in style at The Time Travel Mart’s annual Holiday Mart, where the Echo Park Writing Lab became a portal to local creativity! Neighbors, artists, and makers gathered for a festive day filled with special finds, community, and some holiday magic.
