Greetings to all our Supporters!

Welcome to the Winter edition of the Mewsletter!

I hope everyone has been enjoying the fall weather. I know the kitties here sure are! They enjoyed soaking up the sun during the long, lazy days (for them!) of the summer, and now their activities of chasing bugs and sunbeams has given way to chasing fallen leaves.

We have been busy since our last newsletter.

Our adoptions at both PetsMart stores are going great and we have found forever homes for many, many cats and kittens. We enjoyed spending time at the Sherwood Park store in recognition of PetsMart’s National Adoption Month. You can check out the pictures further on in this newsletter. We had a blast!

Then we moved on to preparation for the Edmonton Cat Fanciers fall show on September 29th and 30th, 2012. That was a lot of fun also, with many of the kitties we brought winning several ribbons which, of course, go along with them to their new homes. It was the Cat Fanciers 50th anniversary so there was quite a celebration! But we will let them tell you more about that in the newsletter.

Two of our volunteers attended the Alberta SPCA conference in October at Fort Edmonton Park.

They found the conference to be very educational and they enjoyed being in a setting with like minded people.

I once again want to thank all of our volunteers, they put so much of themselves into the work that they do for us and I can never express enough my deep appreciation to them all. We wouldn’t be able to do it with out them. We also want to express our very sincere gratitude to Dr. Calin Catarig and staff of the Rosslyn Veterinary Clinic, who provide wonderful care to cats and kittens from the Hervey Foundation. The Rosslyn clinic is truly dedicated to the care of the animals and treats them like family. We also want to thank PetsMart for having our cats and kittens in their adoption centers. Through their efforts, many of our cats and kittens have found wonderful homes. We would also be unable to operate the Foundation without the help of our supporters. It is our volunteers and our supporters that make the Foundation work, and however you help, it means a lot to all of us at the Foundation, especially the cats and kittens in our care.

We hope that you and your families have a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to hearing from you in the New Year.

Our Mission

To care for cats in dire need and give our less fortunate feline friends a warm, loving and caring environment that allows them to live out their lives. To attempt to find loving homes for cats and kittens that come into our care. To promote responsible pet ownership through public education, early spaying and neutering programs and promoting other care programs.

It takes 450 lbs. of dry cat food, 75 cases of canned food and 800 lbs. of litter PER MONTH to take care of the hundreds of stray, abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens that The Hervey Foundation for Cats takes in at their facility each year. Many of these animals find new homes – BUT – many fall into permanent care at our facility.

With costs in excess of $5000 every month the Foundation needs the continued support of the caring public to carry out our mission.

The Foundation was founded by Marjorie Hervey in 1998 to provide care and loving homes for the unwanted, un-cared for and abandoned cats that fall into our society.

She used her family inheritance and more to start and establish The Foundation.Since that time over 3,000 cats and kittens have come into our care and most have found good, loving homes. The balance stay with us to live a quality life.

The Foundation’s prime objective is to offer either a temporary or longterm place of protection for injured, unwanted, homeless and abused cats.

In line with this philosophy is the concept of HOMING - this means that we provide homes for these animals - either a new loving, caring home or permanent home at our facility for the cat to live a Quality Life for the remainder of it’s life.

We provide a means of finding suitable loving and caring homes for these cats.

In addition, we promote and educate the public on the proper treatment of cats all in keeping with the requirements of the Animal Protection Act. Our primary concern is the cats under our care. Great precautions are taken to avoid introducing illness. For example, in the situation involving a typical member of the family our procedures would be as follows: Cats that come into our care are taken to an Accredited Veterinary Clinic where, at the cost of The Foundation, the animal would be examined and Feluk tested, spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, de-wormed, vaccinated with the 4 way combination vaccine and Feline Leukemia and Rabies (if old enough). Its ears would be checked for ear mites and treated.The cat is then transported to our facility . It is placed in isolation for observation for 4 to 5 days. If any symptoms develop that needs attention, then the cat is treated.

Assuming all is well, the cat is placed up for adoption to find it a good home.

The cats in our care are not caged but are free to enjoy an home atmosphere. If it clear that a new acquisition could not be adopted for some reason or another, it is made to feel at home, is given a name, and it becomes assimilated into our family.

The Foundation is unique throughout all of Western Canada. The reason is quite simple. No person has the patience and the devotion that Marjorie has for the cats.

Seasonal Safety Reminders for Cats Ahhhh...the holidays. The tempting flavors of Christmas cookies and pumpkin pie, the fresh scent of pine perfuming the air, the twinkle of lights and delicate glass balls, the thundering crash of the tree as kitty tries to climb it.

Yes, the holidays can be a challenge when you have a cat in the family, particularly a rambunctious kitten.

But with a little judicious planning and a healthy application of common sense, you and kitty can not only survive the holidays, but enhance the enjoyment for the whole family.

Here are some dos and don’ts for maintaining the safety of your cat during cold, wintry weather:

Do

Don’t:

• Wrap or shield electric cords to prevent kittens from chewing them. Plastic tubing for this purpose is available from hardware stores.

• Use a sturdy tree stand, preferably with a water container. Anchor your tree with guy wires if necessary.

• Exchew the chemicals sold to keep trees fresh. They may be toxic to cats if they decide to drink from the tree stand reservoir.

• Put non-breakable ornaments at the bottom of the tree. Save the expensive glass/antique ones for the higher branches or hang them high up in a window. Stuffed cotton ornaments are easy and fun to make--make a special, sturdy one for your cat while you’re at it.

• Set aside one room as a “safe room” for your cats to stay when you’re shopping or out to dinner. “Furnish it” with a scratching post, food and water dishes and litter box, along with plenty of toys, so your cats will feel at home, but leave the decorations to other rooms.

• Make sure your cats have collars with identification.

Even indoor cats can escape during the comings and goings of family and guests during this busy season.

• Honk your car horn before starting it on cold mornings.

Cats are irresistibly drawn to the warmth of the engine, and can suffer injuries from the fan belt.

• Keep your clothes dryer closed between uses and check inside each time you use it, for the same reason as above.

• Feed your cat table scraps. Fatty meats, rich gravies and sauces are too rich for cats. If you feel you must share turkey with them, whip up some Turkey Delight. (check out our “Tidbits” section in this Mewsletter.) It can be offered to your fuzzy friends any time of the year as a special treat.

• Give your cats candy, especially chocolate, which can be poisonous to them if fed in quantity, or over a period of time.

• Use tinsel or metallic garland as tree decorations. Cats will eat it, and can suffer dangerous internal blockages as a result.

• For the same reason, do not leave packaging ribbons lying around on the floor or use them as an unsupervised toy. Instead, let Fluffy bat around a rolled-up ball of wrapping paper. She’ll love the crinkly sounds and playtime will be less hazardous.

• Leave cats outdoors on cold nights. Better yet, keep them inside at all times. They’ll be safer all-around and not be subject to health problems caused by exposure.

• Don’t ever leave a cat unattended in a room lit with candles. In any case, keep your candles up high where your cat can’t reach them, and only light them when you’re going to be in the room.

• Unless you have an extremely calm cat, don’t dress him in cute costumes for the season. A few minutes for a photo is plenty long enough, if you feel you must.

• Don’t get a pet as a surprise gift. The holidays are not conducive to introducing a new cat into a home, and the recipient may not share your enthusiasm. If you know for sure your friend or loved one wants a cat, just give them a card with a promise, and accompany them to the shelter to pick out their special “gift” after the holidays.

Cats in Crisis Some Timely Tips to Help Keep Kitty Safe

Y

ou’ve decided where you’re going to go to adopt your new kitty; possibly you’ve already narrowed your selection down to one cat you simply must bring home. You’ve stocked up on essentials from our shopping list, and you’ve prepared kitty’s “safe room.” There’s only one step left before Homecoming Day - Catproofing your home to save wear and tear on the household as well as the new arrival.

The Cat-Proofing Process Get “Down and Dirty” Put on some old clothes and get down on the floor at a cat’s level.

You’ll spot tempting hazards you may never have noticed from your human point of view.

Protect Valuables Cats are inquisitive and curious (some might say “snoopy”), so you won’t want to leave GreatAunt Pearle’s hand-painted china vase sitting on the coffee table. It will otherwise undoubtedly be the first sacrifice to your new kitty’s exploration.

Breakables Put away any other breakable treasures that are remotely accessible to your cat. Remember that adult cats can, and will, jump onto shelves and counters, so put yourself into the mind of the cat, and look around, and remove anything you value. Cats will get into everything, as the above photo demonstrates.

Other Destroyables Kittens will climb your furniture and drapes. Consider covering cloth furniture with a purchased cover, or even with a blanket or bedspread.

Drapes should be confined to offlimit rooms, or at the least, tied up and out of reach for the time being.

Poisonous Plants Kittens and adult cats love to play with plants - the motion of leaves moving in a draft is irresistable. Unfortunately, part of their play involves biting and tasting - eating some plants can be fatal, so get rid of those, or hang them safely out of reach.

Here is a comprehensive list of plants poisonous to animals.

You might even want to consider artificial plants and flowers as a substitute - just make sure they don’t have easily detachable (and ingestible) berries, small twigs and such.

Hanging blinds cords Kittens will love to bat around cords from hanging blinds, but can also get tangled up in them with disastrous consequences. Either anchor the cords firmly or, better yet, tie them up out of reach.

Electrical & phone cords Kittens’ insatiable curiosity often leads them to one of the most dangerously temptable objects in the house: electric cords. Computers are a particular hazard with their numerous cords dangling temptingly. Invest in a cord management system or tape the cords together and fasten them out of reach. Those that don’t manage easily can be sprayed with Bitter Apple, a very unpleasant tasting, but harmless substance. Do the same with long phone cords.

Small Hazards Rubber bands, paper clips, thumb tacks, broken balloons, Christmas tree tinsel and other small articles are irresistible play objects for kittens, but pose a choking hazard.

Put them away in containers, and leave the tinsel off the tree this year. A good rule of thumb is to put away anything that you would not want a toddler to get his hands —6—

Pest Poisons Remove any ant or roach traps from accessible areas. If your cat will be an indoor-outdoor pet, also scour your yard and remove any left-over ant stakes or snail bait.

The Garage It’s probably better to label the garage “off-limits” to your cat.

Too many poisonous/hazardous materials are stored there. Antifreeze is particularly poisonous and is attractive to animals because of its sweet taste. Make sure that any spilled anti-freeze is cleaned up immediately, and the garage floor thoroughly washed.

Store all caustic and poisonous materials in a closed cabinet.

Outdoor Enclosures for Safe Outside Play Cat lovers who want their cats to enjoy fresh air, greenery, and sunshine, while keeping them safe from traffic, dogs, predators, and those who would harm them, should consider building an outdoor enclosure, either from a kit, from plans, or from your own creativity.

Cats aren’t treated equally as dogs

E

xperts believe that cats and humans have interacted with each other for more than 10,000 years. From their humble beginnings chasing rodents away from our food, cats have vaulted into our homes and hearts as North America’s favorite pet. Unfortunately, despite their popularity, cats aren’t treated to the same veterinary care that we provide our canine friends.

There are more than 90 million cats in North America households and, after reviewing veterinary medical records, experts have concluded that our felines are actually 30% less likely to visit a veterinarian than dogs. What could possibly cause this difference?

Many people believe that a cat’s independent nature and their selfsufficiency mean that they are pretty low maintenance. After all, owners don’t need to walk their cats in a heavy rain or freezing blizzard. So, if cats are so good at taking care of themselves, they must not need a doctor, right?

A Stray’s Plea

Additionally, more than 50% of cat owners report that they have a difficult time transporting their pets or that the last trip to the veterinarian was too stressful for the kitty. Still other owners express concerns about adverse vaccine reactions or costs of treatments and preventive care.

People have historically viewed cats as second class or even unworthy of treatment. This has led to inadequate health care and worse.

Not only that, but as small to medium sized predators, cats instinctually hide their illnesses to avoid become dinner for a bigger predator. Owners can often miss the subtle signs that their kitty isn’t feeling well.

The unfortunate result out of all of this is that when veterinarians do see cats, they are often faced with advanced problems that are more costly and difficult to treat. Extensive kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes and even widespread parasites top the list of feline issues. One study published

showed that flea infestations in cats have increased by 12% in the last five years and ear infections are up more than 34%!

One goal is to help owners understand that a visit to the veterinarian is more than just a couple of vaccinations for their cats. A full physical examination done annually by the veterinarian is the first and probably most important thing a pet owner can do for their beloved feline. This exam can often spot early issues before they turn into big, expensive problems.

Additionally, cat owners are urged to have open communication with their veterinarian about which vaccines their pet actually needs and which ones can be avoided. The veterinarian can review the cat’s risk factors and the overall prevalence of specific diseases in the area to make the best recommendation. Although adverse reactions are always a risk, this dialogue can help minimize any potential danger.

Veterinarians are starting to to make their practices more “feline-friendly”. Often, changes to scheduling to create “cat only” days or even a separate waiting area for cats and their owners can help to encourage veterinary visits. After all, no cat wants to be seated next to a big, scary dog!!

THANK YOU PETSMART! We have been successful in the City of Edmonton’s grant application program. So what that means is that now we can take unclaimed strays from The City of Edmonton Animal Care and Control Center, take them for veterinarian services and then they are transported to the PetSmart at 2066 38 Ave to be placed for adoption. This has been working very well, and as a result, it has helped reduce the homeless rate and has offered these cats a second chance of finding their forever home!

We want to thank the City of Edmonton for their grants to us and to PetSmart for providing the adoption center for the cats.

When the cats that we already have at PetSmart are adopted out, then we can bring in more from Animal control.

This leaves room at the sanctuary for the aged, injured and disabled cats.

Hervey adoption updates!

A wonderful update on Spencer, from Lorne!

Spencer is a black cat, whom Lorne adopted from the Foundation.

He rides on Lorne’s back a lot and as you can see is very well cared for. Some of you longtime readers may remember some amazing photos of Lorne and Spencer, and “his” deer from past issues. We LOVE getting updates on kitties who have found their forever homes!

Mathilda is settling in and we’re getting used to her own unique quirks.

The other cats seemed rather surprised at her size but all except our old cat with the broken tail are getting used to her. The old cat doesn’t care for anyone but Dave so her grumpiness is normal! Here are a couple photos of her first night--all the cats seem to like this soft stuffed dog that I brought home from the feed store when Roz and Annie were little.

Cats with white markings Clearly delineated white markings (as opposed to shaded points, like the Siamese) can appear on any color. Just add “and white” to the cat’s basic color to describe the cat. So for example your cat might be a “black and white” or a “cream tabby and white.” Cats with white markings might have larger or smaller areas of white. If you want to describe your cat’s color more precisely, there are different names for the different amounts of white:

Because of Love: a true story

A

brother and sister had made their usual hurried, obligatory pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm was where they had grown up and had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine, which topped the hill behind the farm. Through the years the tree had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside.

The young siblings had fond memories of their childhood here, but the city hustle and bustle added more excitement to their lives, and called them away to a different life.

The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, and getting out to the barn on those frosty mornings was getting harder, but it gave them a reason to get up in the mornings and a reason to live.

They sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day’s end.

Angry, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks “Why do you not at least dispose of ‘The Old One’. She is no longer of use to you. It’s been years since you’ve had foals from her. You should cut corners and save so you can have more for yourselves. How can this old worn out horse bring you anything but expense and work? Why do you keep her anyway?”

The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, scuffed at the barn floor and replied, “ Yes, I could use a pair of new boots”.

His arm slid defensively about the Old One’s neck as he drew her near with gentle caressing he rubbed her softly behind her ears. He replied softly, “We keep her because of love.

Nothing else, just love.”

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

The old couple shook their heads in

sorrow that it had not been a happy visit. A tear fell upon their cheeks.

How is it that these young folks do not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts?

So it was, that because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the “Old One”. In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses.

But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back.

He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire’s fury. His wife back from calling for help cradled him in her arms, clinging to each other, they wept at their loss. By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife, exhausted from their grief, huddled together before the barn.

They were speechless as they rose from the cold snow covered ground. They nodded thanks to the firemen as there was nothing anyone could do now.

The old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as his shaking old hands clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana.

Brokenly he whispered, “We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair.

We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared and pray for our beloved most precious gifts that have been taken from us.

And so, he took her by the hand and slowly helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own — 11 —

The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they paused to rest, looking up to the top of the hill the old couple gasped and fell to their knees in amazement at the incredible beauty before them.

Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass.

Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this. They were breathless as the old man held his wife tighter in his arms. Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and mystified, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath continued on next page

the tree, in resplendent glory, a mist hovering over and glowing in the darkness was their Christmas gift.

Shadows glistening in the night light.

Bedded down about the “Old one” close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping cautiously through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about.

The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits.

I

f you are reading this publication, you are more than likely a dyedin-the-wool cat lover. Most of you share your homes with at least one cherished feline - often more. Many of your cats are rescues – those given a second chance at an indoor-only life of comfort, safety and, most importantly, love!

Some of you may already own a registered pedigreed cat. Have you ever wondered which breeds are the most popular? The International Cat Association (TICA) recognizes 55 breeds for championship status. The following are the top five, presented in order of popularity.

The Bengal is a medium to large cat known for its striking, richlycoloured highly contrasted coat of vivid spots or distinctive marbling.

They are descended from cats produced from a breeding between a domestic cat and an Asian Leopard Cat. Today’s Bengals are the result of Bengal-to-Bengal matings only.

The coat is luxurious, soft and short and sometimes displays an iridescent sheen called “glitter”. They are active, inquisitive and love to be up high – in short – very busy. If you are looking for an active cat, this may be the breed for you. They do not always “consent” to be lap-cats, but they most definitely want to be a part of ALL of their owner’s activities!

A much less active breed, the Ragdoll cat is loving and quiet with a laid-back personality. They are said to have originated from a breeding between a solid white longhair female and a seal point mitted male. Further selective breeding has produced the Ragdolls of today in three patterns – solid point (no white), mitted (white feet) and bi-colour (white inverted V on the face and more white on the feet). Despite the long silky-textured hair, they shed very little and the soft coat is easy to maintain. The Rag-

doll is a large sturdy cat that generally gets along well with children as well as other pets, including dogs. A memorable feature of the Ragdoll is their captivating bright blue eyes.

A native North American breed, the Maine Coon Cat is generally accepted as the largest breed and is known as the “gentle giant”. This is a hardy, handsome cat with a rugged, shaggy coat and an impressive bushy tail. The fanciful belief that the breed originated from a mating between a longhair domestic cat and a raccoon is untrue (and biologically impossible). More likely is that they sprang from natural selection of cats brought to North America by the Vikings and early settlers. The “Coon” is an affectionate cat who usually insists on being part of everything its owner does. They are not lap cats (thankfully - due to their large size!), but they do love to be close to their humans – sometimes wrapping their not-unsubstantional bodies around their owner’s heads while they sleep.

The striking Savannah catt is a tall, lean graceful cat with random dark spots. It closely resembles its ancestor, the African Serval – but is a domestic cat. The first Savannah was born in 1986 and the breed was accepted for championship status in 2012 – the newest competitor on the judging table! A distinctive feature of this unique breed is the large, tall ears set right on top of the head. In addition, its hooded eyes provide an exotic look. The Savannah is a very curious, assertive cat – active to the max; they require a great deal of daily interaction. Not lap cats, they are nonetheless very loyal and inquisitive and are known for greeting family at the door, then following them around.

There doesn’t seem to be any middle ground regarding Sphynx cats – one either loves them or hates them. Their human-like antics are perplexing; they can open doors with their toes which are like fingers. They are extremely inquisitive and active; kittens can literally be “bounce off the walls” specialists.

The breed originated from a hairless kitten born to a black and white domestic SH in Ontario in 1966. Selective breeding in various parts of North America produced the present day Sphynx. They have been accepted for championship competition for over 20 years. They are truly lap cats, who desire to be right beside their owners at all times – partly to stay warm. They are not truly hairless; fine down covers much of their skin and they feel “suede-like”. They can become oily, due to the lack of fur and require regular bathing to maintain their cleanliness. Contrary to popular thought, they are not hypo-allergenic – a prospective owner is advised to check for sensitivity prior to purchasing a Sphynx.

Edmonton Cat Fanciers’ September 2012 Show

B

uoyed by the overwhelming show of support from exhibitors and spectators at our March 2012, the Edmonton Cat Fanciers Club decided to go ahead and observe its 50th Anniversary in proper fashion at a fall show.

The celebrations included a large display including 2 triptychs – one that had been assembled for our 40th Anniversary (by Barb Hallett) and one for the 50th Anniversary (by Gail Borowski) as well as a number of albums containing photos from shows and events over the past 25 years. Many folks took time to look over these items and reminisce at cats and people from the “old days”.

We had also re-printed in large format some photos of the Saturday afternoon Judges “in action” twenty or so years ago. These were presented to them as souvenirs from the show and were on display while they completed their judging.

were ceremonially cut by Judges Yvonne Patrick and Lindajean Grillo and served to anyone in attendance.

Once again we offered Exhibitors the opportunity to support the Club financially and the adoptable cats/kittens as well. It has been noted in other shows, that cats competing and winning ribbons often attract more attention to those that are available for adoption. This show five generous Exhibitors contributed to the cause, so that six cats from The Hervey Foundation for Cats were fully sponsored in competition.

They competed and they WON – every single cat obtained at least one win – some of them many, many wins! One lucky kitty was adopted into a “forever home” and left Sunday to start his new life.

Thank you most sincerely to those who sponsored shelter cats.

A varied display of goods by our many vendors enticed both exhibitors and spectators to part with their money. In addition, Club Members had arranged a very appealing raffle table with many wonderful prizes.

The number of cats at the show was lower than in years past, but the competition was fierce and many new “Supreme Grands” were achieved. Congratulations to all.

An unexpected surprise came our way on Sunday when we had a visit from Ann Marie Macdonald

and Perrine Kennedy of the CelticCat Club in Dublin, Ireland.

They had produced the first TICA show in Ireland in April 2012 and were interested to see how a

CelticCat club members - Perrine Kennedy and Ann Marie Macdonald from Ireland

North American show looked. We were honoured to have them visit us and talk to the Judges as well as a number of breeders present.

DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair... must try this on their bed.

DAY 762 - Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep depriving, incessant pleas for food at ungodly hours of the night.

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was... Hmmm. Not working according to plan...

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are.

For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture.

This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called â&#x20AC;&#x153;shampoo.â&#x20AC;? What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call â&#x20AC;&#x153;beer.â&#x20AC;? More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of â&#x20AC;&#x153;allergies.â&#x20AC;?Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are lunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The Bird on the other hand has got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful tongue (something akin to mole speak), and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time.

REMEMBERING Miko, My Mom’s Blue Eyed Boy I got my love of animals from my Mom. She has always been an amazing Mother in addition to having a house full of “fur-babies’.

She liked to joke that she had five children at home - all from different fathers!

In one of the 2010 issues of the Mewsletter, I shared pictures of my Mom’s “zoo”. Her four cats: Sutekh, Miko, Buttons and Ronnie & Max the dog.

Miko was a rescue cat, who from the day he was adopted 2 years ago made himself at home at my Mom’s place.

Beautiful blue eyes, white fur and pink ears. He had a funny way of wallking with his head slightly cocked as if he could hear you (he was born deaf.)

Always ready to play hide and seek, jumping out at you when he wanted to play, yet he was a cuddler who loved to sleep beside you on the pillow.

Miko passed away very unexpectedly on September 18, 2012. He was only 10 years old. He was in my Moms arms, being loved until the end.
