The Dust Bowl of the 1930s lasted about a decade. Its primary area of impact was on the southern Plains. The northern Plains were not so badly affected, but nonetheless, the drought, windblown dust and agricultural decline were no strangers to the north.The Dust Bowl and how it affected the lives of many civilians was a dark and discreet time because of the lack of resources, lots of death, and society was changing every day.

The Dust Bowl is an environmental disaster that hit the Midwest in the 1930s. A combination of a severe water shortage and harsh farming techniques created it. Some scientists believe it was the worst drought in North America in 300 years. The lack of rain killed the crops that kept the soil in place. When winds blew, they raised enormous clouds of dust. It deposited mounds of dirt on everything, even covering houses.

One-fourth of the population of the southern Plains left during the Dust Bowl years, including 200,000 to California. More than 86,000 arrived in California from the drought states between June 1935 and September 1936 alone. California residents and authorities did not warmly receive the refugees. Foreseeing this coming trend, in early 1935 the city of Los Angeles formed the Committee on Indigent Alien Transients. Scorn was directed at transients who had no visible means of financial support and whose legal residence was other than California.

The massive dust storms forced farmers out of business. They lost both their livelihoods and their homes. Deflation from the Depression aggravated the plight of Dust Bowl farmers. Prices for the crops they were able to grow fell below subsistence levels. In 1932, the federal government sent aid to the droughtaffected states.

In conclusion, The Dust Bowl was a treacherous storm, which occurred in the 1930's, that affected the midwestern people, for example the farmers, and which taught us new technologies and methods of farming. From that time the people of the Midwest have learned new ways to survive from a treacherous and such deadly disaster. New technologies and farm equipment help farmers with tending to crops if there was another Dust Bowl but massive winds are something that can't be controlled or helped with.
