Code Talkers Americas Saviors The Navajo Indians in World War II

Navajos and America The Navajo Indians helped the Americans beat the Japanese In WWII. WWII happened in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s (1939 - 1945). Most of the war for America took place in Hawaii and the pacific ocean. WWII is a war that helped the Navajo Indians earn more respect from most Americans ,The Navajos impacted the war in a very positive way for America, and the Navajos still helped americans out after what they did to most navajo Indians ancestors.

Respect

World War II help the Navajo Indians earn more respect from Americans because of them joining the Marines, Navy, and Army to become code talkers. A code talker is a Navajo Indian who communicated with other men in the USA army ( mostly they communicated with other Navajos.) Then the Navajos translated what the message in navajo to English to tell the Americans.

If the Americans did not have the Navajos they probably would have lost the war. www.archives.gov Says “During World War II, the Japanese could not break the Navajo code used by the Marines.”

Therefore the Navajo Indians earned the respect of most Americans.

radios. Japanese could intercept the radio and listen, and the Japanese understood english. But the Japanese did not know the language of Navajo indians. America made navajos able to sign up so they could be code talkers. Another way they impacted the war was they were extremely athletic because of the work most of them had to do at there clans. Before the war boarding schools were starting to let in Navajo Indians in but most wanted to erase the

wanted them to speak only english.)

The Americans killed the livestock of the Navajo people and burned there crops forcing them to move or stay and die. The reason why this is relevant to the Navajos in the early 1940’s is because they did not hold a grudge on America and some Navajo Indians helped them defeat the Japanese in World War II. This demonstrates Navajos being tolerant of America and them showing compassion for there native land (even if they do not own all of the land.)

Why would Navajos help America?

In 1863-1867 according to http://www.pbs.org “Navajo Indians were forced to relocate to a reservation, which meant more than 10,000 navajos were forced to walk up to 500 miles. In other words it was called the long walk The reason was that the Americans were moving into the Southwest and the Navajo were in the way.”

The Navajos influenced World War II in a big way to help America win because of there native language. The code talkers were the way America could communicate over the radio without the Japanese figuring out the direct translations of America's code, Navajo.

Marine:a member of a body of troops trained to serve on land or at sea, in particular a member of the US Marine Corps.

Banzai: A Japanese battle cry or a form of greeting used to the Japanese emperor.
