Frances is an editorial intern at Seven Days. A junior at UVM, she has been determined to become a food writer since she read her favorite kids’ book, Bread and Jam for Frances. Our Frances has an enormous appetite for sweets and meats.

Sarah is the Seven Days sales intern. She’s studying public communication and applied design at UVM, and in the last few years she has fallen in love with all things 802.

A: Nope, sorry. Too much alcohol of any kind can depress the body’s systems and numb nerve endings, making a hard-on hard to come by. You’re simply going to have to choose: Do you want to drink to the point where your penis won’t function, or would you prefer to get your rocks off? And remember, heavy drinking over a long period of time can contribute to more serious erectile dysfunction issues — not to mention less attention to detail when it comes to safer sex — so you might want to lay off the jungle juice.

Q: How’s a girl supposed to masturbate in a dorm room with two roommates? One of them is always home, and if I do manage to steal a moment, I can’t finish because I’m too nervous that one of them is going to walk through the door. Help!

— Horny in Harris-Millis A: Two words for you: the shower. That’s where you’ll find some of the only alone time you get during college. Feeling adventurous? Try a waterproof toy from Good Stuff on Church Street. Just make sure it doesn’t buzz too loudly!

Q: Is it cool to bring a boy into the girls’ shower?

Q: I’m an 18-year-old female and I’m still a virgin. I’ve been chatting online with this guy who also got accepted to the same school (we met touring the campus). I told him that I hadn’t had sex yet, and he says he wants to be my first. I’m kind of sick of all this waiting around for “the one.” I just want to do it and get it over with. My only hesitation is that it will hurt. What can he do to make it less painful?

— First-year first-timer A: Are you really sure you want to lose your v-card to this guy?

I’m not saying you have to wait for “the one,” but you should at least wait for someone you really like. You’ve waited this long, why not hold out a little longer for a better experience?

Plus, the more you like the person you’re with, the more turned on you’ll become, and the less uncomfortable your first time will be.

Q: I have what my friends refer to as “whiskey dick.” After partying, I can’t keep it up. Are there certain types of alcohol that won’t cause my willie to wilt?

— Going soft at Spinner Place

A: No. The other women in your dorm have a right to privacy in the bathroom — don’t make them feel uncomfortable by bringing a strange dude to the showers. Plus, someone else is going to have to use that shower after you, and I’m sure she’d rather not share it with his DNA. Q: In high school, I realized that I wanted to live as a male, despite being born female. Right now, I kind of pass. I managed to finagle living off campus, so no stress about the “boy living in a girls’ dorm” issue. I want to be my new self at school, but I assume I’ll have to explain

Cram SeSSion things to people eventually, especially if I end up hooking up with someone. Everyone in my hometown knows my story, so I don’t have a lot of experience with this. What do I say and when do I say it?

What can we do?

A: Do your school documents reflect your male gender and chosen name? If not, I strongly recommend reaching out to your professors before the first day of classes to ensure no gender confusion during roll call. As for revealing your trans identity, do what feels right. Some people want everyone to know, and others prefer to keep their transition to themselves — either way is fine. When hooking up, follow your gut. You’ll get a feeling for whether the person you’re crushing on is queer-friendly. If you think he or she can hang, tell the truth before the lights go off.

Honesty is always the best policy in that situation.

And don’t forget to mark your calendar — the University of Vermont hosts one of the largest trans conferences in the country every fall called Translating Identities (uvm.edu/~tic).

Admission is free and the sessions are fascinating. Plus, you’re likely to find trans-friendly cuties for ferocious flirting.

A: Kudos to you for caring about your girlfriend’s sexual health. Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, are an unfortunate side effect of sex for many women.

They can occur when common bacteria make their way up the urinary tract as a result of the friction caused by intercourse or other heavy petting — and the more you do, the greater the risk.

Your girlfriend should pee before and after sex; it’s a good way to flush out potentially harmful bacteria. And she should always remember to wipe front to back! In addition to drinking lots of water to keep the flow going, she might also consider trying cranberry juice or adding a cranberry supplement to her diet.

For some women, urinary tract infections all but disappear when they switch sexual positions to ones that cause less friction on the urethra (like doggy-style or reverse cowgirl).

The less sweat, fluid and pressure on her pee-hole, the better.

Q: My roommate is always sleeping with different guys and telling me about it — as if I want to know! She’s getting a reputation for being a total slut, and I don’t like being associated with it. How do I tell her to shut it down before she totally ruins her cred?

— Fuming Roomie in Redstone A: You can’t change your roommate’s behavior, but you can request that she not dish about her sexual escapades with you.

The next time she starts telling you about her latest conquest, politely let her know that it makes you uncomfortable. But

— Butt Seriously in Bader Hall A: Anal sex can be an exciting and satisfying sex act for both men and women. However, successful anal sex takes communication, preplanning and respect for one’s partner — none of which your boyfriend is giving to you. If you don’t want to engage in anal, have a talk with him and tell him that you’re not OK with him “venturing south.”

Let him know that if he does it again, you’ll be reconsidering your relationship — and be sure to follow through if he continues to ignore your wishes.

You’re better off hitting up Burlington’s massive public library, which has huge picture windows overlooking College Street, countless study nooks and, of course, free Internet access. When it’s time to stretch your legs, check out one of the cool art exhibits or head to the magazine racks.

A less touristy, but no less interesting, part of the city is the Pine Street thoroughfare. It’s at its hippest and most happening during the South End Art Hop, when more than 500 community artists crawl out of the woodwork to exhibit visual art in funky, repurposed factories and warehouses. You’ll find photography, paintings and leftfield sculptural installations on display during this two-day spectacle — not to mention the work of local designers in the STRUT fashion show. A dress made out of condoms?

saM Mazza’s Corn Maze Looking to get lost for a few hours? Take a break from the books — or the video games, or whatever — and head straight for the cornfields. Vermont is home to a number of labyrinths worthy of a lengthy wander. It’s the perfect way to kill an autumn afternoon. If you feel like driving more than an hour, Danville’s Great Vermont Corn Maze has been voted the second best in the U.S. If not, nearby Colchester boasts three miles of maize that measures seven feet tall. Make sure to fuel up on homemade apple-cider donuts and fruit-filled pastries from the farm store before venturing in; there’s no telling when you’ll get out. Here’s an extracurricular activity you can actually tell Mom and Dad about.

Can’t wait for winter? Before the ski mountains open for business, Burlington’s own Burton Snowboards brings the powder right to the heart of downtown. Queen City Sessions is a grassroots rail jam — a mix of local riders, scaffolding and trucked-in snow, all coming together near City Hall Park. With 15-foot drops and shredders from all over the Northeast, the ordeal is “an East Coast snowboarding family reunion,” according to Snowboarder Magazine. And, thanks to first-come, first-served registration, “Pretty much anyone can sign up,” says Burton events coordinator Aaron Simmers. Watch up-andcoming rail riders throw down — or, heck, join ’em.

Vermont has a reputation for being green, so it’s no surprise that the three Rs — reduce, reuse, recycle — carry over into the work of local crafters. The biannual Queen City Craft Bazaar is the state’s indie craft show, where your favorite Etsy artists sell handmade, eco-friendly items with a spunky vibe. Look for patterned handbags stitched from repurposed jeans or an iPod docking station cut from an old skateboard. Offering everything from trendy accessories to stuffedanimal robots and creepy dolls, the whole craft show is more “bizarre” than “bazaar.”

Good morning, class.

And welcome to Burlingtones 101, your intro course to the dynamic little music scene that is Burlington, Vt. — OK, and parts of Winooski, too. Please take your seats.

Now, I’m sure some of you saw this course on your schedule and thought, Oh, wow. Easy A. I can pretty much sleepwalk through this thing, plagiarize some Wikipedia entries and call it a day. Allow us to disabuse you of that notion.

Sure, you could spend the next four — or five, or nine, whatever — years only listening to Phish or Grace Potter and then boast to your out-of-town friends about what a great music town Burlington is. You’d be kind of a tool with limited horizons. But you could do it.

Or, you could roll up your sleeves and get to work.

We won’t lie to you. To get the most out of the local scene, you’re going to have to make an effort. Your ears will ring. Your legs will ache from dancing on concrete floors. And you will pull all-nighters. Frequently. But we promise, you will get back what you put in, and then some.

You’ll find music in Burlington to be of high quality, and remarkably diverse. From rock to country, punk to hiphop, jazz to electronica, reggae to right-wing Christian death metal — OK, we lied about that last one — the Queen City can quench almost any musical thirst.

With that in mind, here is a sampling of what you’ll find around town. When you’re ready, dig deeper. You’ll be glad you did.

»lordsilky.com As they do in any city, music trends come and go in Burlington. We’ve got our share of grungy flannel shirts, patchouli-smelling patchwork skirts and, yeah, maybe some hammer pants (don’t judge) buried in our collective closet. But one scene has remained constant: Local punk and hardcore are the foundation on which the Queen City music scene is built — although you may have to work harder to find it than you used to.

One band worth seeking out — and there are several — is Lord Silky. Composed of four veterans of the local hardcore scene, the band can crush deafening riffs and rip hairpin breakdowns with the best of ’em. But for all their aggro sneer and slobber, they’re actually … well, pretty funny. It’s hardcore without a message. And it rawks.

The five-member DJ collective runs the genre gamut, offering smartly crafted dance mixes that will sate almost any taste — and shake almost any behind.

Maryse Smith & the Rosesmiths represent the best of what Burlington’s vibrant indie-folk scene has to offer.

Which is to say: humble songs, played with lovingly imperfect care, brown-paper bagged in sparse, homespun arrangements that strike at the core of the genre. Smith’s 2010 solo debut, Is Becomes Was, is a local classic. An EP with the full band is planned for fall 2011.

What was once a handful of likeminded artists struggling to get noticed has blossomed into a legitimate local scene boasting a wide variety of DJs, MCs, producers, dancers and artists. In fact, it’s less a scene than it is a community.

Among the next generation of local rhymeslingers is Colby Stiltz. His 2010 debut, Escaping Insanity, showcased a cunningly playful and linguistically acrobatic MC. The album is a tantalizing appetizer, both of the rapper’s own potential and of what you can expect to find in the Burlington hip-hop scene.

»parmaga.net Once upon a time, Burlington was known far and wide as a jam-music mecca. Thank you, Phish. But recent years have seen a seismic shift occur in the scene. Indie rock is quickly becoming the city’s sonic calling card.

The change reflects a larger national trend — for one thing, it’s just hard to do the hippie wiggle dance in skinny jeans. More than that, it’s a numbers game: There’s a lot of great indie music being made in and around Burlington, and Vermont in general. Among the more promising acts are space-rock duo Parmaga, who released a stunning debut EP, Ghost Pops, in early 2011.

Eerie, sparse and melodically gripping, it’s required listening for incoming hipster frosh and discerning indie-rock fans alike.

Sure, you forked over a few thousand dollars for a year’s worth of cafeteria grub,

but sometimes you want to eat something that hasn’t been prepared by a lunch lady. Here are a few suggestions for those special — and not so special — occasions.

I’ve divided my list into five categories: on a date, out with the ’rents, weekend brunch, vegetarian and late night. There are three choices in each, which correspond to the thickness of your wallet.

You can mix and match, too. Perhaps your parents are vegetarians with money to burn. If so, a trip to A Single Pebble may be in order.

I’ve also shared seven of our staff’s favorite dishes in the Burlington area. Sample them one at a time or go on a gut-busting binge. Just don’t miss out on all the local food scene has to offer.

Burlington’s Brooklyn

Winooski isn’t just going in circles anymore

urlington is no Manhattan, but if it were, the tiny, one-square-mile city of Winooski would be its Brooklyn — an adjacent urban burg that’s still a little rough around the edges, and where you can find cheaper places to eat, live and play.

Named after the Abenaki word for wild onion, this former mill town has struggled since its textile industry collapsed in the 1950s. The Onion City has been trying to reinvent itself ever since. Its downtown was razed not once but twice in urban-renewal projects. In the 1970s, city officials suggested covering it with a dome, a whimsical plan that made news all the way to the pages of Time magazine.

The latest wave of redevelopment, begun in 2004, created the massive roundabout and the student housing and retail storefronts that wrap around its eastern edge. New apartments and luxury condos have sprung up a block away. The new Winooski RiveRWalk1 gives residents a way to stroll along the waterfront. The Community College of veRmont2 brought its home-base campus to town in 2010.

There are still some vacant storefronts along the roundabout, but Winooski feels like it’s finally coming to life. In the spring of 2011, the city’s community partnership unveiled a new hipster-friendly logo3 that embraces the Noosk’s central, circular feature.

And the group gave the Winooski faRmeRs’ maRket4 a facelift, moving it onto the edge of the roundabout and staging it on Sunday afternoons; it happens weekly until the end of October. Over the summer, a group of artists and business owners organized five “pop-up” aRt galleRies5 that remained open for five weeks.

The change has been happening organically, too. Winooski has long been a destination for recent immigrants; a century ago, they came from from Canada, Italy, Ireland and Poland to work in the mills. In the last 30 years, many Bosnian, Vietnamese, Iraqi, Somali and Bhutanese refugees have resettled here. It’s no accident

National online grocery leader MyWeBgrocer30 just bought the cHaMPlain Mill31 and is moving in this fall.

Despite all the new activity, Winooski is still full of old houses that have been subdivided into apartment buildings. That means it’s still a reliable place to find a cheap(er) off-campus apartment close to school.

And you don’t have to look far to find evidence of Winooski’s seedier side. Follow the path that begins at the end of the Riverwalk. The wooded trail brings you to the base of an interstate overpass that’s covered in exquisite graffiti. It’ll make you feel like you’re in a much bigger city. wg

Roadtrips Getting out of Burlington by Carolyn Fox

ermont’s biggest city is a great place to eat, shop and hang out. That is why you came to college here, right? But, as a popular local saying goes, “The best thing about Burlington is that it’s close to Vermont.” We hereby grant you permission to take a study break for these three required roadtrips.

Lake ChampLain isLands There’s nothing tropical about the five island towns that form Vermont’s very own archipelago: the Champlain Islands. South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, Isle La Motte and Alburgh define the strip of land roughly 30 miles long and eight miles wide along the northwest coast of Vermont.

Getting to the islands is easy enough. Take I-89 to exit 17, and hang a right north on Route 2, which takes you through each distinct town. Did we mention it’s an awesome place to bike? In season, of course.

An island day-cation practically screams for some beach bumming.

Sand Bar State Park, known for its shallow water, is at the south end of the causeway that leads to the islands. Alburgh Dunes State Park, way up by Canada, boasts low glacial bluffs that date back to the last ice age.

The dunes are itty-bitty, but the beach is one of Lake Champlain’s longest.

Another weird natural phenomenon: the Chazy Fossil Reef on Isle La Motte. Known as the world’s oldest fossil reef, it formed roughly 480 million years ago in a shallow, tropical sea; plate tectonics dropped it off here. You can view fossilized coral from the trails at Goodsell Ridge Preserve.

If you’d rather wander through grapevines, hit up South Hero’s Snow Farm Vineyard, where you can stroll the grounds and take in live music on Thursday nights from June through September. Twenty-one? Pay a few bucks to sample reds and whites, or an extra-sweet ice wine — one perk of Vermont’s brisk winter temps. Pair that wine with some cheese by heading to Lakes End Cheeses, where Toggenburg dairy goats contribute their milk to soft chèvre and brie. On cheese-making day, you can watch the action through the glass doors of the cheese room.

Into art? Explore the nooks and crannies of Grand Isle Art Works, a funky farmhouse built in 1797 that now displays art and fine crafts made

by Vermont artisans. Head south to Allenholm Farm, where you can pick your own apples in season or snag a homemade fruit pie.

With the state’s highest peak, Mt. Mansfield, and a picturesque, artsy village down below, Stowe makes for a stellar daytrip. Just ask the folks at HGTV, who liked the mountain hamlet so much they built the 2011 Dream Home there.

A good part of the town’s allure is the first-rate skiing and riding at Stowe Mountain Resort. If it’s off season, or if you don’t dig the powder, go for the gondola rides, climbing walls and alpine sliding. Or hit up Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center for year-round entertainment under rustic wooden beams. The 420-seat theater has hosted big acts like the Bacon Brothers (as in, Kevin Bacon) and James Taylor since opening last winter.

Off the slopes, the Stowe Recreation Path makes it easy to get outside, with 5.5 miles of paved greenway for biking, skating and jogging — or maybe just picnicking by the swimming hole. You can spend time on a different kind of green (the AstroTurf variety) while teeing off at Stowe Golf Park, an 18-hole minigolf course.

Stowe also has a great little downtown for shopping, the kind of tourist activity your visiting parents will love. While you’re there, duck into West Branch Gallery & Sculpture Park, an indoor and outdoor space for contemporary art, or Helen Day Art Center, both of which are open yearround. Just outside Stowe is Ziemke Glassblowing Studio, where artist Glenn Ziemke transforms molten glass into colorful vases and bowls before your eyes.

For a quick bite, get a sugar buzz at Laughing Moon Chocolates — it hosts free chocolate-dipping demos every day at 2 p.m. Find hand-thrown specialty pizza at Piecasso Pizzeria & Lounge, which also has live music.

Speaking of food, you can eat your way in or out of town, too. The short drive through Waterbury right off the exit takes you past the Ben & Jerry’s Factory, the Cabot Annex Store and Cold Hollow Cider Mill. In downtown Waterbury, look for The Alchemist Pub and Brewery, serving gastropub fare and handcrafted brews in a funky atmosphere.

Just two hours from Burlington, Montréal offers college students something they can’t find in Vermont: a drinking age of 18. But La Belle Ville’s bars are the least of its attractions. The cultural capital of Québec is your ticket to cosmopolitan sights and entertainment, and it’s just one passport away. Yes, you need to remember your passport to get there — or, more accurately, to get home.

The big city attracts some big-name musicians to performing-arts venues such as Place des Arts de Montréal and Parc Jean-Drapeau. The latter sits on two islands in the middle of the St. Lawrence River and is the site of the massive, annual Osheaga Music and Arts Festival. It’s also home to the Biosphère, an environmental education center and feat of spherical architecture, and La Ronde, Québec’s largest amusement park.

The Montréal Olympic Tower Observatory offers a stunning panorama.

Completed a decade after the 1976 Summer Olympics, it transports visitors via funicular 500 feet over the city. Just a stone’s throw away sits the Montréal Biodôme, which recreates unique ecosystems from North and South America.

Winter got you down? Warm up in the humid tropical rainforest. The Montréal Botanical Garden is a living museum of 22,000 plant species, which can be viewed in some 30 thematic gardens. The intricate Chinese Garden is inspired by the lush horticulture of the Ming Dynasty.

Another place to soak up some culture: the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, aka the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts.

The big fall exhibit, “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” embraces haute couture.

Come springtime, “Lyonel Feininger: From Manhattan to the Bauhaus” is a revealing retrospective of the German American painter and caricaturist.

Any good traveler knows to follow the locals. The Atwater and Jean-Talon markets — stocked with big, beautiful fruits and veggies, cheeses, and gourmet foods from around the world — are great for shopping and people watching. The main thoroughfares of St. Catherine and St-Laurent are dotted with trendy shops and restaurants — you’ll find Ethiopian, Polish and other world cuisines that have yet to arrive in Vermont.

And don’t forget to sample poutine — the signature Québécois dish of French fries, cheese curds and gravy. wg

Take a Hike Five treks to get you out of the library and into the woods

by Tyler Machado Moving to Vermont and never going on a hike is like moving to Malibu and never going to the beach. It just doesn’t make much sense.

Whether you’re a nature newbie or an experienced backpacker, you’ll find plenty of trails to try in the Green Mountain State. Here are five of my favorites, all within an hour’s drive of Burlington.

STROLL 1 LEISURELY Niquette Bay State Park, Colchester

GettinG there: Take Interstate 89 north to Exit 17, then take Route 2 west for about a mile. Turn left onto Raymond Road, and follow that to the end, the Niquette Bay parking lot.

Fee: $3 entrance fee until Labor Day weekend; free afterward BrinG: Light sneakers, sunscreen, a towel Like walking through the woods, but want to avoid the knee-punishing inclines of Vermont’s mountains? Amble around the natural lakeside oasis of Niquette Bay State Park. The park includes 3.5 miles of walking trails through a surprisingly remote forest. There are some small hills and cliffs, but, like much of the Champlain Valley, the park is downright flat by Vermont standards.

The best part? All trails end at Niquette Bay on Lake Champlain. Thrill seekers can jump from the park’s 60-foot cliffs.

If you’re into something more sedate, spread a towel or blanket on one of the smooth, waterside rock faces. It’s like the beach, except you won’t get sand in your shorts.

EASY 2 PRETTY Mt. Philo State Park, Charlotte GettinG there: Take Route 7 south to Charlotte, then a left onto State Park Road. The park entrance is directly ahead, about half a mile from the intersection.

Fee: $3 entrance fee until October 12; free afterward BrinG: A picnic lunch, binoculars In all honesty, the closest “mountain” to Burlington isn’t actually much of a mountain. But if you’re looking for a quick yet slightly challenging hike not far from campus, Philo is hard to beat. If you’re in halfway decent shape, you can complete the moderately pitched ascent in less than an hour, which leaves plenty of time to take in the views. From the top of Mt. Philo, you can see Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks to the west and the Green Mountains to the east. One glimpse of these stunning vistas, and you’ll understand why this is a popular spot for weddings. I’m betting most brides and grooms drive up the Mt. Philo road — which you can do, too, during the summer months. If you’re into that kind of thing.

EASY 3 ALSO Silver Lake/Falls of Lana Trails, Middlebury GettinG there: Take Route 7 south. About seven miles south of Middlebury, take Route 53 south. The trailhead is behind a long, skinny parking lot on the left side of the road, just south of Branbury State Park.

Fee: Free BrinG: A camera, perhaps a tent Some parts of this state are not just naturally beautiful but straight-up Middle Earth-like. The Falls of Lana in Middlebury is one such Tolkienesque paradise. Here you’ll climb a few switchbacks alongside a bubbling brook until you find a majestic, 100-foot waterfall. Once you’ve popped your eyes back in their sockets, you can climb farther to the quiet, placid Silver Lake, home to a campground and picnic area. If you want to go farther still, these paths hook up with miles of trails in the enormous Moosamaloo National Recreation Area. But you don’t have to travel far to enjoy this quiet slice of heaven — especially if you’re a Midd kid.

BIT MORE 4 ACHALLENGING

Snake Mountain, Addison

GettinG there: Take Route 7 south to Route 22A south. Follow 22A for 10.4 miles, then take a left on Willmarth Road, then another left on Mountain Road. Park in the lot on the left side of the road. The trail starts across the road behind a gate.

Fee: Free BrinG: A sturdy pair of trail shoes, a map If you wish Mt. Philo were a little more challenging, a little more remote and a lot less crowded, Snake Mountain is the place for you. Finding the roadside trailhead requires some keen navigational skills, but the lesstrampled-upon trail is worth the effort.

The summit of Snake Mountain is long and winding (like a snake, get it?), but the best views are from a cliff on the mountain’s northeastern face. Work up the nerve to look down, and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Champlain Valley. Tip: Do this hike at the peak of the fall foliage season for maximum “wow” factor.

5 HARD Mt. Mansfield, via Underhill State Park, Jericho GettinG there: Many trails lead to the top of Mt. Mansfield. To find this one, take Route 15 east to Underhill, then hang a right at the fork onto River Road. Continue through Underhill Center and turn right onto Mountain Road. Stay on this road until you enter Underhill State Park, where the trailhead is located.

Fee: $3 until October 19; free afterward BrinG: Lots of layers, including waterproof ones Mt. Mansfield is Vermont’s highest peak, and it’s big enough that you can approach it from any direction. Its east-facing slopes host the Stowe Mountain Resort, home to some of the most challenging skiing in the East. But for the best hike that’s closest to the colleges, head to Underhill State Park in Jericho. From there you can take the Sunset Ridge trail to Mansfield’s “chin.” But be prepared to climb some steep slopes on your way up, and make sure you’ve packed appropriately.

The weather can change quickly, especially as you get closer to the summit. What starts as T-shirt weather at the bottom can very well become a sleet storm when you cross above the treeline. But if you make it to the top on a sunny day, the views can’t be beat in Vermont. wg

You’re going to college in Vermont because you like it here, presumably — the snow sports, the idyllic summers on Lake Champlain, the environmentally and socially conscious vibe. So, why leave when you graduate?

Vermont weathered the economic downturn better than many places around the country, which means there are jobs here — Burlington’s unemployment rate is the lowest of any metro area east of the Mississippi.

And Vermont is home to all kinds of interesting and innovative businesses. Some of them, such as Burton Snowboards, are connected to the things you love about living here.

But if you want to work at one of these cool local companies, you have to, well, work at it. We interviewed a few recent Vermont grads to find out how they got their jobs. They all agreed on at least two things: Internships are key, and it’s best to start your search as soon as possible.

Why does he work at Dealer.com?

Kaye likes the laid-back atmosphere. “Prior to Dealer.com, I was a help-desk administrator at a credit union in Montpelier,” he says. “I wanted to move back to Burlington and get to a more relaxed work environment where I didn’t have to wear a tie every day.” The company’s amazing perks — including free guitar classes for employees, a company gym and on-site massages — probably don’t hurt, either.

Why did he stay in Vermont?

“I knew I wanted to stay here because I really like the people. And it’s a nice atmosphere for a small town. If you’re bored in Burlington, I feel like that’s your fault!

“I could go to Boston or New York and they’d pay me more, but I’d be a lot less happy. Go where you’re comfortable.”

Advice for current college students?

“Start applying for jobs early. I started looking in August of senior year and I had a job offer by October. If you wait until the end of the school year, you’ll be competing with a lot more applicants.”

How she got her job: Suarez moved to New York after graduating, but she returned to Vermont to take a job at the state’s second-largest daily newspaper. “I sent 120 résumés all over the country,” she explains. “The Rutland Herald and ESPN were the only people I heard back from.” Returning here wasn’t part of her plan, but she says it was “the best decision, really.

It was so much better than getting some job in New York where I wouldn’t be writing every day.”

What does she write?

“A lot of municipal stories and court stuff. And the feel-good feature stories. I did a story on a lady who turned 100, which was kind of cool …

I’ve also become an unofficial reporter for our arts section.”

Advice for current college students?

“Start looking for a job early. The jobs are there, it just might take some time. And have a good core of friends that will keep your hopes up and keep you happy.”

“If you have a well-thought-out idea, go for it! In Vermont there are plenty of niches that still need to be filled. Use the skills and resources you already have and find a business partner or two. You will be constantly challenged and will grow as a professional exponentially. Channel any fear or excitement into productivity.”

Advice for current college students?

“Keep your options open. Keep an open mind.

You’ll never know what you’ll find yourself liking in a job.” Want a career in web design? “I would strongly recommend that you brush up on HTML and CSS, at least,” he suggests. “Nowadays, a lot of companies are looking for designers who are also developer hybrids.”

Hinesburg’s 837-acre town forest is loaded with steep climbs and tricky trails for even the most rugged wilderness buffs.

This 5.5-mile paved path follows the West Branch of the Little River past picnic areas and swimming holes.

The Stowe Community Church sits at the southern end; the northern terminus is near Topnotch Resort and Spa.

This 12-mile trail, which includes the Burlington Bike Path, runs along Lake Champlain from Oakledge Park all the way to the Colchester causeway — a narrow, old railbed that extends three miles into the lake, with water on both sides. In the summer, a bike ferry connects riders to the Champlain Islands. Unfortunately, severe spring flooding damaged this trail, and the bike ferry was discontinued. Check the Local Motion website for updates on repairs.

Tectonically, Burlington is sandwiched between the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains. The Long Trail runs the length of the latter. Assuming you’re not here for backpacking, find a few doable day trips in “Take a Hike” on page 44.

king of the hill: If you’re a serious snowsports enthusiast, you can’t spend four years here without hitting the slopes of Stowe Mountain Resort. Even skiers and riders accustomed to more expansive, Western resorts will appreciate Stowe’s rugged terrain. Look for student deals as soon as you get to school; a regular-price lift ticket costs almost as much as a credit hour.
