The Seven Days Guide to the South End Art Hop
T
he South End Art Hop is nothing if not eclectic. The annual celebration of hyperlocal art — which this year runs September 11 to 13 — features outdoor projections and live music on Friday night, haute couture during Saturday’s STRUT! fashion show, and unique handmade wares at the weekend-long outdoor Artist Market. Yet for the 34th edition of the event, the South End Arts + Business Association unites this variety of vibes through a single thematic aesthetic: art nouveau. The movement’s dreamy, languid, organic forms — think the famous entrance to the Paris Métro, Tiffany lamps, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s cabaret posters — marry elegant design with expert craftsmanship. In the late 19th century, the style took hold in all kinds of objects, from hats to door handles. Art is similarly far-reaching in
Burlington’s South End, where craftspeople are at work year-round making murals, sculptures, artisanal jewelry, lamps and even creemees. To guide you through the neighborhood, we sent a squad of flâneurs to explore in true Parisian style and bring you selections of PUBLIC ART to admire (page 21), GALLERIES to visit (page 22), MAKERS to meet (page 22), SHOPS to peruse (page 26), delectables to EAT and DRINK (page 24), and VENUES FOR GREAT MUSIC (page 26) — all in sets of seven, of course. While on our stroll, we stopped for a visit with outgoing SEABA artist-in-residence CYNTHIA CAGLE (page 8) and popped into the SEABA CENTER, Art Hop’s new Pine Street headquarters (page 6). Read on to learn what we found, or use SEABA’s official ART HOP PROGRAM (page 11) to plan your own three-day belle époque. ALICE DODGE

urlington’s arts district got a welcome boost last fall when the South End Arts + Business Association moved back to Pine Street. Before renovations were even complete, the nonprofit behind the South End Art Hop began hosting art exhibiAH8v-artworks090926 1 8/31/26 4:41 PM tions in the old industrial building that previously housed hot-spot restaurant and music venue ArtsRiot. Since then, the new SEABA Center has been pulsing with activity as administrators work to make it a creative anchor for the city’s South End. The 7,000-square-foot space offers an art gallery with free admission; free music on its porch; Christy Mitchell pop-up artists’ markets; and a venue that has hosted bands, benefits, a book fair, wedding parties and campaign events. Still to come: a kitchen to better support caterers and an interactive map in the entryway to point visitors to SEABA members and other nearby businesses. The map, which supports SEABA’s mission to promote the creative and economic vitality of the neighborhood, is available online now. Thu-Fri-Sat 12-5pm To Burlington painter Katharine The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery Montstream, the SEABA Center is “a perfect blend of everything.” It’s inclusive and community-driven, local artists said, 266 Pine Street Suite 105 and offers them a low-barrier opportunity Burlington, VT to show and sell their work while giving everyone a place to see and appreciate art. Char Dworshak, one of Montstream’s daughters. She and Montstream held a joint show at the SEABA Center in May. Montstream recalled exhibiting in the same building, at 400 Pine Street, when SEABA occupied a smaller portion about 15 years ago. In recent years, the venue had sat empty periodically as ArtsRiot closed, reopened and then rebranded for a short run as the District VT. It had been shuttered for about six months when, last fall, SEABA staged its STRUT! fashion show there during Art Hop, its flagship event. That’s when executive director Christy Mitchell recognized a “supercool opportunity” to move the organization from its third-floor office in the nearby Vaults building to a street front with seven times the space. The nonprofit was already curating art shows in nine area buildings, including Mascoma Bank, Speeder & Earl’s Coffee, the Innovation Center of Vermont, and the Maltex Building. But having its own gallery gives SEABA greater freedom to display art that might not be appropriate for those other settings, Mitchell said. “Also, we can hammer as much as [we want] in the walls,” she added. “We can hang things from the ceiling.” Sculptures too fragile to be exhibited in a shared hallway or coffee shop can safely be displayed there. Exhibiting artists don’t have to be SEABA members; submissions occasionally come from out of state. February’s “From Vermont, With
Love” included work by artists from 24 Vermont towns. “By a Thread,” in March, featured pieces by more than 50 New England fiber artists. Some shows have themes: July’s “Pièce de Résistance” displayed work exploring freedom of expression and dissent; “Night Shades,” coming in October, will celebrate dark art. Other exhibitions are less restrictive. August’s “Show Off !” invited SEABA members to display any piece of their choosing. “Creative Competition,” presented twice so far, works the same way, except that it’s open to all artists and they vie for people’s choice awards. Burlington sculptor, painter and muralist Clark Derbes — who has exhibited at SEABA himself — has entered work in that competition from his students at ReSOURCE YouthBuild, a nearby program that awards high school diplomas and trade certifications. The non-juried show offered the teens and young adults the thrill of seeing their work in a gallery. Shows open on the first Friday of the month and close on the last Saturday. First Fridays feature live music, drawing both music lovers and art aficionados. The opening for Montstream and Dworshak’s show featured Cal Humberto and his band. “They just ripped,” Dworshak said, “and they brought this whole crowd of younger people.” The music offerings are a welcome addition to the local scene following the closures of several venues in recent years: Nectar’s, Club Metronome, Despacito and, of course, ArtsRiot. “People are elated to be back in that room,” SEABA Center production manager Luke Awtry said.

ince 2020, the South End Arts + Business Association has teamed up with Unsworth Properties to offer a yearlong artist residency in the Vaults building on Howard Street. After a competitive application process, the artist-in-residence receives a private, 325-squarefoot studio on the first floor with a garage door and lots of natural light. SEABA will announce this year’s awardee at a Sunday afternoon celebration in the studio, which has previously been home to artists Erin Bundock, Tonya Whitney, Raphaella Brice, Misoo Bang and Nicolei Gupit. For the past year, it has belonged to South Burlington painter and ceramicist Cynthia Cagle, 53. The artist grew up

thought I was going to do. I wanted to focus on plastics in the ocean. And then, in October, everything fell to shit with that idea, because everything happening in our country deeply affected me. When I see
people from my ethnicity and race being kidnapped and killed on the streets, and feeling so helpless and sad and frustrated and angry and scared, I did not have the emotional energy to spend on [the ocean project], and there was no way I was going to do it. Paintings for me are super personal; ceramics are very different. Whatever I’m feeling, I can go in and play with clay, no problem. But painting — I was actually kind of scared. I talked to a lot of different artists and friends around the area, and a lot of them said, “Just paint anything.” So I’m like, OK, I’ll paint a bunch of birds. They make me happy. Frida [Kahlo] came in because I had taken this picture of her dress at an exhibit. And then the ideas started flowing. What do you plan to do next? One thing that I’ve learned from this residency is: I can now accept that, like, I am a working artist. My parents saying, “Go get a real job” — that’s kind of what was ingrained in my head. I got pregnant at 19 — my daughter’s 33 now — so I had to just leave school, forget art, and work to make money and support her. I always worked several jobs.
Bringing it to the present, I now know that art is my job. I can come in here every day, Monday through Friday, and it feels really good. So that’s what I’m excited about. I’m going to be going to S.P.A.C.E. Gallery after this — I have a little studio lined up there. It’s, like, the size of this rug, but it’ll be a great space. Is there anything you think the next resident should know? You don’t have to be stressed about what you wrote on your application. I think that’s really important. If I say I’m gonna do something, I do it, so it was hard for me to let that go. Just use this space to be free in and create. You can take a nap. You want to sit here and stare out the window with a cup of tea? You can do that. This is your own space to do whatever you want in, and you’re free of having to sell things, right? You can just create for yourself, whatever that means. This interview was edited for clarity and length.

Remembering September 11
Art Hop & Rosh Hashanah
As Art Hop begins on September 11, we want to acknowledge those who lost their lives 25 years ago and the ways in which the events of September 11, 2001, forever changed our country and the lives of so many.
For 34 years, Art Hop has brought people together in Burlington to celebrate art, creativity and community over the weekend following Labor Day. This year, Art Hop’s opening day coincides with the beginning of Rosh Hashanah at sundown, with the holiday continuing throughout the weekend. To our friends and neighbors observing Rosh Hashanah, we wish you and your families a sweet, peaceful and meaningful New Year. SEABA ART HOP

7 Pieces of Public Art in the South End B Y C ECI LI A LUCE
Burlington Earth Clock Is Stonehenge on your bucket list? Burlington has its own version in the South End. The Earth Clock, constructed in 2007, was part of a project called Circles for Peace. Inspired by ancient and Indigenous cultures, the 43.5-foot circle neighboring Blanchard Beach acts as a clock, compass and calendar. Just west of the stones, which weigh up to 20 tons, a panoramic view of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks awaits. If you lose track of time gazing at the mountains, well, you know what to do.
“Inside Out” Once the site of a brush and bristle factory, Dealer.com transformed its Howard Street headquarters and, in 2015, turned its 32-foot-tall twin silos into an unlikely artistic spectacle. Muralist Mary Lacy covered them in colorful geometric abstractions inspired by origami — the kaleidoscopic design has become familiar to those with a Pine Street commute. Officially called “Inside Out,” the artwork is a nod to the digital marketing company’s relationship with the South End community.
Buddha Mural No, you’re not being paranoid: Watchful eyes are peering at you from the intersection of Pine and Locust streets. Ron Hernandez’s redand-yellow mural is a South End icon, yet the meaning is little known. The face, airbrushed on one side of a Burlington Electric Department storage unit in 2004 as a beautification project, actually belongs to Buddha. As the artist told Seven Days in 2011, the eyes — slightly lopsided — convey the Awakened One’s message that “Nothing is perfect, but you do the best you can.”
“File Under So. Co., Waiting for…” Better known as the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet, this art installation has become a beloved South End tourist attraction, though few visitors know its origin story. Artist Bren Alvarez created the sculpture in 2002 to protest the Southern Connector: Each drawer of the cabinet represented a year that the long-stalled road project was up for debate. Before it was moved in 2020 to accommodate the road’s construction, the cabinet stood directly in its path. The renamed Champlain Parkway finally opened this summer.
“Let It Be” Unveiled last September, “Let It Be: A Cautionary Tale of the Pine Street Barge Canal” is a collaborative mural and history lesson in one. Hanging outside BCA Studios, it depicts the industrial canal’s complex history and transformation from a Superfund site to a modern-day community hub. Juniper Creative Arts worked with eight young adults through Burlington City Arts’ Artist Apprenticeship Program to create the mural. As teen Calvin Millham-Berry told Seven Days in 2025, it emphasizes “the healing that can happen when we let nature be.”
“long way home” Artist Kevin Cincotta braved an early July heat wave this summer to create one of the South End’s newest murals. Titled “long way home,” it brings to life quintessential Vermont imagery — mountains, cattle and strawberries — with abstract style and color choices. Pastel pink and forest green are beautiful contrasts to the bold red and orange of the Soda Plant’s exterior. Detour to Haymaker Bun for a coffee and a treat, then take a few steps around the corner to check it out. PHOTOS: LUKE AWTRY, JAMES BUCK, ALICE DODGE, ERIK ESCKILSEN, CECILIA LUCE AND MATTHEW THORSEN
Soda Plant Rocket Ship One of Burlington’s most eccentric hubs, the Soda Plant is a former soda factory now home to artist studios, a coffee roaster, a bakery and even a modern soda lounge. Building owner Steve Conant, who also founded Conant Metal & Light, made sure the décor reflects its quirky vibe. He’s responsible for a few artistic flourishes on-site — most notably, a 6,000-pound rocket ship that sits outside. (Don’t miss his rhinoceros head bursting through the clapboard facing Pine Street, either.) SEVEN DAYS ART HOP GUIDE 2026

208 Flynn Ave. Art has always been at the heart of this building, which many Art Hoppers will remember for centrally located Flynndog gallery. These days, it showcases work by members of the Howard Center Arts Collective, which promotes wellness through art making for adults who have had mental health or substance abuse challenges. Check out a group show during the Hop and twoperson shows year-round.
Head to this artsy industrial space to witness art in action. The custom screen printer, in business since 1981, offers racks of T-shirts, hoodies and prints with spiffy designs, many created in-house. During Art Hop, visitors can try their hand at the presses with a selection of demo stencils; you can even give it a go with your own garment. Scared to get inked? You’re welcome to watch.

Goldsmiths Connie Coleman and Marie-Josee Lamarche co-own Alchemy, where they also craft their jewelry in an attached workshop. Coleman’s delicate gold reproductions of twigs found on Mount Philo, fashioned into rings and bangles, complement Lamarche’s precious stones in relaxed geometric settings. The gallery also showcases works of functional and fine art by a gaggle of local folks, including Kristian Brevik’s iconic whale-skeleton lamps.
This tiny gallery on the second floor of the Soda Plant, run by photographers Mookie Kristensen and Corey Riddell, showcases some of the most intriguing work you’ll see in Burlington. Drawing on a national network of concept-forward artists and photographers, the pair curate thoughtful solo shows in their 150-square-foot space. Each is accompanied by a zine, which they sell alongside other hard-to-find art publications. Past shows at Extra Special include “Hand Me Down,” Anna McNeary’s deep dive into clothing and fabric waste; Sophie Schwartz’s photographic exploration of online dating; Naomi Moser’s installation of surreal, character-driven videos; and Landon Newton’s immersive, instructional takes on botanical drawing. During Art Hop, look for “Long Hidden Friend,” a solo exhibition by Montpelier artist and University of Vermont art lecturer Micah Wood, who co-organized the debut Vermont Art Book Fair in April. If you miss it during Art Hop, catch the show weekends through October 10.

The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery
Founder and curator Kate Swanson’s gallery in the Karma Bird House showcases an intriguing selection of objects that straddle the line between fine art and home goods. Her shows juxtapose aesthetic approaches to craft, assembling spaces that convey strong vibes, such as that of the spooky New England landscape. During Art Hop, sneak a peek at N by N’s new and expanded space within the building.
Look for the “Space Man” mural toward the back of the Soda Plant, and you’ll find the S.P.A.C.E. (Soda Plant Artist Collective Environment) Gallery. A gargantuan annual members’ show and 12 on-site studios make it many people’s first stop during Art Hop, but it’s also an anchor for Burlington’s First Friday art openings. Return year-round to see thoughtful presentations by some of the South End’s most talented artists.
Despite kilns that can hit 2,050 degrees, AO Glass’ 10,000-square-foot warehouse is one of the coolest places in the South End. The company turns molten glass into everything from tableware to custom installations with major international artists, such as Maya Lin and Christine Sun Kim. Visitors are invited for hands-on classes and, during Art Hop, glassblowing demonstrations. 416 Pine St., aoglass.com

Steve Conant was one of the original movers and shakers behind the Art Hop and the South End’s revitalization. Back in the 1980s, he touted his studio as “the best brass shop in the world.” Today, Conant Metal & Light creates custom fixtures for high-end hotels and residential renos alike. Visit the workshop to see reproduction antique hardware, luminous glass orbs and quirky little lamps.
Soapbox Arts With its polished concrete floor, pristine walls and airy atmosphere, Soapbox Arts is perhaps the only real white-cube art gallery in Burlington. The establishment represents more than two dozen artists — most of them women — whose solo shows offer innovative uses of materials, clear aesthetics and well-articulated ideas. Don’t skip Christina Watka’s hanging gemlike structures, on view through October 10. 266 Pine St., Suite 119, soapboxarts.com

Bruce R. MacDonald’s works of art are difficult to classify but unmistakably his. The largescale abraded metal panels bounce light in different directions, reflecting it off trippy abstract patterns and serene scenes of mountains and lakes. See many of them, as well as works by select artists such as Gordon Auchincloss and Joël Urruty, at HAVOC, which is open during Art Hop and by appointment the rest of year.

Jennifer Kahn
Jennifer Kahn Jewelry Jewelry maker Jennifer Kahn has been Art Hopping for 25 years, including as part of her own wedding festivities in 2013. She showed her work in several different spaces before opening her studio and store on the second floor of the Soda Plant seven years ago. Visitors might recognize her hammered, brassy earrings and pendants with chunky gemstones from boutiques and stylish people’s bodies around the state. The pieces stand out for their ancient vibes, with a timeless feel that’s both elevated and earthy. Stop by to meet Kahn and her brother Jason Steinberg, who has managed the studio since 2020, and see works in progress or commission special items. The studio offers 20 percent off during Art Hop. It’s one of Kahn’s favorite times of year, she said: She likes to watch the South End come to life.

Dostie Bros. Frame Shop If you’re looking for Dostie Bros., keep an eye out for a sign boasting “World’s Best Art.” That’s not “World’s Greatest Art,” Alex Dostie was quick to clarify — just some he and his brother, Jeremy, like a lot. This Art Hop marks the 15th anniversary of the custom frame shop, which has become the go-to choice for South End artists. New collectors, take note. 308 Pine St., Suite 101, dostiebrosframeshop.com
Rackk & Ruin Behind the Soda Plant’s iconic rhinoceros sculpture, jewelers Molly Conant, Miki Sakaguchi and Amelia Szosz handcraft classic pieces in precious metals. Alongside a curated selection of vintage clothes, housewares and art by other area makers, their necklaces, bracelets and earrings stand out as sophisticated and subtle — airy elegance that’s equally suited to a wedding or a white T-shirt. 270 Pine St., 2nd floor, rackkandruin.com
Sterling Furniture Works This woodshop’s garage-door entrance always draws the Art Hop crowd. But most of what craftsmen Marc Leone and Noah Burton do — making custom furniture by hand from highquality lumber — isn’t on view. For Art Hop, they build experimental pieces as well as small items such as cutting boards. If you’re looking for a funky angled bookcase or a bar made from exotic wood scraps, stop in. For tamer tables, just ask. 422 Pine St., sterlingfurnitureworks.com

Burlington Farmers Market On Saturdays, a dusty Pine Street parking lot transforms into the agricultural, commercial and social hub of the South End. Local farms sell their fresh produce, of course, but the Burlington Farmers Market is also a great stop for a snack or a meal with a side of people watching. The menu is global, from grass-fed burgers to tamales and pastries to pickles.

Brio keeps much of Vermont caffeinated with its robust wholesale biz. But its Soda Plant coffee bar rewards those who journey to the source with excellent espresso drinks, flashchilled iced coffees and seasonal specials, including a sprinkle-topped Maple Creemee Nitro that made our summer. The space is bright and cheery, just like Brio’s light bulb logo, and stopping by is always a great idea. 266 Pine St., Suite 116, briocoffeeworks.com
Burlington Beer More is more at Burlington Beer. The sprawling taproom offers 20 house brews on draft; staff-curated flights; and cider, wine, kombucha, cocktails and nonalcoholic options for non-beer drinkers. It’s not complicated to sip a hazy double IPA called It’s Complicated Being a Wizard — or its variants, Little Wizard, Dank Wizard, Grove Wizard and Lunar Wizard. They’re all spellbinding. 180 Flynn Ave., burlingtonbeercompany.com
La Reprise A wine bar, restaurant, wine shop and market all at the same time, La Reprise is a place to eat and drink. But as stunning as chef Brian Popov’s pasta, seafood and tomato toast can be, the succinct menu’s greater goal is to make you thirsty. Sip a chilled red on the patio or in the seasonal garden out front, or linger over a perfect pairing in the restaurant — think grilled swordfish with a Corsican rosé, or chicken confit with Côtes du Rhône blanc. Not sure where to start? The shop offers free tastings every Thursday, and owner Ari Sadri and his team can swiftly guide you to something special, like a California pinot noir that hasn’t been available in Vermont in decades. They’ll give you the full story behind the bottle, complete with tasting notes that could be poetry.
This funky brick-walled, industrial-chic space makes for a fun hangout. But the drinks are great, too, from flat whites, Americanos and iced coffees made with Brio beans to golden milk lattes, seasonal lemonade and blackberry matcha. Housemade flavors such as spicy mocha and rose-cardamom jazz things up even more. Pair your beverage with a pastry, or grab breakfast until 1 p.m. 208 Flynn Ave., Suite 3I, nomadcoffeebtv.com

Scout Coffee and homemade ice cream in the same place? Sign us up. The third location of this local biz set up shop in the South End in 2022. Like its other cafés, this plant-filled space uses a rotating roster of roasters from Vermont and around the country, sourcing from BIPOC-, queer- and women-owned businesses. And where else can you get a scoop of gochujang chile crisp ice cream? 696 Pine St., scoutvt.com
Speeder & Earl’s Coffee The South End has run on Speeder’s Blend since the family-owned café opened on Pine Street in 1993 — six years before “third-wave coffee” was a thing. More than 30 years on, the cozy café’s drinks are still big, and the coffee’s still affordable: Think $3 for a 20ounce cup of drip and $14.99 for a full pound of maple French roast beans. 412 Pine St., speederandearls.com
Great Harvest Bread This bakery and café has been bumping in the South End since before the South End was cool — 2003, to be exact. Some customers come for a free taste of the day’s specialty bread and leave with a loaf. Others, enticed by the yeasty smell wafting out the door, might grab a strawberry hand pie, a latte made with La Colombe Coffee Roasters beans or a sandwich stacked high on whole-grain slices. 382 Pine St., greatharvestburlington.com
Haymaker Bun A onetime James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Bakery, Haymaker is known nationwide for decadent brioche buns. Grab a cinnamon roll-inspired O.G. or one of the creative rotating flavors, such as Suns Out Buns Out, with strawberry and pistachio. Not feeling sweet? Creemee-doughnut sandwich
Mr. Creemee Mr. Creemee’s sherbet-colored ice cream parlor on Pine Street is bright enough to feel like summer, even if it’s colder than a creemee outside. Open year-round as of last fall in the longtime Myer’s Bagels spot, it’s a much-needed expansion for the downtown Little Gordo Creemee Stand. Mr. Creemee has all the Little Gordo hits: scoops, swirls, shakes and Wizards featuring ice cream made from scratch with Monument Farms dairy. There are new additions, too — housemade pastries, including doughnuts, and espresso drinks using Vivid Coffee beans. Everything can be ordered à la mode, but the ultimate combo is Mr. Creemee’s doughnut sandwich: a fluffy yet structurally thoughtful cinnamon-sugar doughnut sliced in half and stuffed with a creemee swirl. Enjoy one at the sprinkle-flecked counter, or head out back to the Pinery for Barge Canal views. 377 Pine St., mrcreemee.com
Lake Champlain Chocolates The flagship location of this family-owned chocolate biz got a chic update in 2023, making it even more of a destination for all things sweet. Stock up on factory seconds or visit the expanded café for specialty treats, a “life-altering” hot chocolate or a scoop of housemade ice cream. If you’re in it for more than a quick hit of theobromine (the milder relative of caffeine found in cacao), book a guided chocolate tasting. 750 Pine St., lakechamplainchocolates.com
Majestic Majestic is named for the car rental biz that previously occupied its rotary-adjacent space, but it’s an apt way to describe the cool restaurant’s lobster spaghetti, too. The vibe is casual enough for a weeknight meal — the only time Majestic was open until recently, when the team added Saturday service. Grab a dairy cow tartare and a Big Dumb Salad and watch the cars whirl by. 616 S. Willard St., instagram.com/majestic_vt
Pizza 44 In a building shared with Queen City Brewery, you’ll find pizza to please all palates. Go for a wood-fired New York-style pie or a cast iron-baked thick-crust pizza — a fusion of Sicilian and Chicago deep dish. Tim’s Pepperoni pie is completely covered with tiny cupping pepperoni (the best kind), while Doug’s Marvelous Maple has a Vermonty twist: cheddar, bacon, apple, arugula and maple drizzle. 703 Pine Street, burlington.pizza44vt.com

We’re thrilled to open our season with the delightful French-Dominican jazz singer Cyrille Aimée and her quartet, fresh from selling out an entire week’s residency at Birdland . A masterful interpreter of Hot Club style, standards, and contemporary jazz, this tri-lingual, smoky-voiced chanteuse is a dazzling performer who can hold an audience in the palm of her hand . With style, panache, humor, and charm, Cyrille is a joyful jazz artiste .

Love local art? (If you’re reading this guide, we have a hunch the answer is yes.) Then you’ll dig Thirty-odd, a gift shop that aptly features the works of about 30 local artists, from textiles to prints to Vermont-themed souvenirs. Owner Moe O’Hara, aka Recycle Moe, is an artist herself who fashions notebooks from old children’s books and coin purses from cassette tapes. Find her wares for sale alongside darkly funny magnets featuring Martha Hulls “cute and deadly art,” botanical stained glass by Root Studio (Carrie Root) and adorably “scary monsters” by Big Girl Company (Gretchen Verplanck). Quirky finds are hidden around every corner. Thirty-odd’s September juried show, “Unlikely Pairs,” strives to “defy expectations and cause friction.” Color us 30 different shades of intrigued.
When Rough Francis guitarist Julian Hackney took over the reins of Speaking Volumes’ record shop earlier this year, his goal was to elevate what was already a fixture in the Queen City’s vinyl scene. The punk rocker and Young at Heart ginger beer founder has been busy revitalizing a store that is packed full of used and new vinyl, plus stereo and audio equipment. No matter the genre, no matter how obscure, Speaking Volumes carries it — the shop is a true record-lover’s oasis. Swing by for occasional performances, or catch staff showing off the store’s immense vinyl collection while deejaying at other South End spots, like Doma Bar. 7 Marble Ave., instagram.com/ speakingvolumesrecords

Burlington Vintage Market Held every summer Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Burlington Vintage Market is one big treasure trove for vintage clothes. The Lamp Shop As Liz Segal and Andy Arp looked for lighting options for their first home in 2000, a unique opportunity arose: His family was selling the contents of a “fabulously funky” lighting shop in New York. Instead of buying a few fixtures, the couple acquired the whole inventory, and the Lamp Shop was born. Today, it offers an eclectic collection, from chandeliers to desk lamps and everything in between. 424 Pine St., shopthelamp.com

Railyard Apothecary Herbal justice and regional ecology collide at Railyard Apothecary, the South End’s own herbalism co-op. Your nose will thank you when you enter: Lavender, citrus and sage greet you with their soothing scents, available in dry herbs from small, local organic farms as well as tinctures, powders, teas and body products. Sign up for a class or consultation to learn how plant medicine can boost health. 28 Howard St., Suite 101-A, railyardapothecary.com

Doma Bar Combining top-shelf Puerto Rican-inspired cocktails and a luxurious sound system pumping out a deep collection of vinyl, Doma Bar opened in the South End last fall. Between the casually cool vibe, the tasty snack menu, delicious alcoholic (and NA) concoctions, and a rotating cast of sound selectors, Doma is a must-stop destination for Art Hop — and the rest of the year, too. 388 Pine St., Unit 2, doma.bar

South End Get Down • The Pinery Once warm weather hits in Vermont, a Friday-night block party in the South End kicks off with a bang. Known as the South End Get Down, it features 18-plus food vendors, full access to the Pinery beer garden, the scene’s best DJs, and fashion and art for sale. Best of all? This family- and dog-friendly event is completely free. The South End Get Down (Fridays from May 15 to September 11, 5-9 p.m., getdownvt.com) and the Pinery (Thursdays and Fridays, 5-9 p.m., and Saturdays, noon-9 p.m., weather permitting, thepineryvt.com) are both at 377 Pine St.
SEABA Center For many years, ArtsRiot was the epicenter of Art Hop. When the venue changed hands and then closed, it left a void for live music in the neighborhood. Fortunately, in addition to organizing Art Hop, the fine folks at the South End Arts + Business Association took over the space in 2025 and are working hard to return it to its former glory (see page xx). Look for plenty of music during Art Hop, both on the porch and inside the club, as well as the STRUT! fashion show. 400 Pine St., seaba.com
Switchback Brewing Switchback has long been a fixture of both the South End scene and Art Hop, but it became even more vital when it opened its beer garden and smokehouse in 2025. Alongside its award-winning beer, the brewery now serves up housesmoked Southern-style barbecue and frequent live performances from local acts. 160 Flynn Ave., switchbackvt.com
the great-great-grandson of the founder of Burlington’s Venetian Beverages, the club — appropriately housed in the Soda Plant — carries on a legacy over a century old. Whether it’s a solo blues piano performance, a hot-house jazz singer, a murder mystery dinner or standup comedy, the spot offers impeccable vibes. 266 Pine St., venetiansodalounge.com
Zero Gravity Beer Hall Zero Gravity has come a long way since it first opened in the downtown American Flatbread in 2004. Now with a production facility and taproom on Pine Street, the brewery is a South End hot spot. It plays host to bands and DJs throughout Art Hop, all while serving up a full menu of craft brews, burgers, bratwursts and more.
