hoy! And welcome to the Seven Daysies, the locals’ guide to Vermont. In our 16th year, we’re setting sail on the SS Daysie for treasures heretofore untold. A record-breaking number of Seven Days readers have picked favorites in food and drink, arts and entertainment, shopping and services, and outdoors and recreation. Hop aboard, and we’ll cruise to the winning results. The Daysies are more than a handy treasure map to what’s great in this state — they’re a celebration of the people and places that make these hills our home. When it comes to farmto-table restaurants, independent retailers and natural wonders, we’re luckier than we can fathom. In this age of Amazon, many locally owned businesses across the country are pushing up daisies. So we’re grateful to live in a place where communities care about indie merchants
— they’re what make our downtowns so distinct. The Daysies are our annual opportunity to say thanks. How did we come to Daysie-crown these victors? First, our readers wrote in their favorites for everything from best ski slope to CBD shop, best food truck to film festival. The Daysies contest captains tallied up the nominations, selecting the top finalists in each category — and, when warranted, dividing them into “inside Chittenden County” and “outside Chittenden County” to allow some farther-flung faves to float to the top. Then we held a final multiple-choice voting round to determine the winners. Exactly 21,861 readers participated this year. That’s more than double the number from 2017! Thanks, Vermont, for rockin’ the vote — and the boat. CAROLYN FOX

We couldn’t help but notice some tasty parallels within this year’s Daysies food results. After 17 years of running a wildly popular food cart on Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace, Hong “The Dumpling Lady” Yu transitioned to a year-round restaurant, Hong’s Chinese Dumplings, last fall. She sold 1,400 of her Daysies-winning dumplings on opening day. Meanwhile, A Single Pebble — Burlington’s longtime Daysies champion for best Chinese restaurant — added a mobile eatery this spring. Chef Chiuho Duval told Seven Days she’s “having fun” cooking grab-and-go Chinese street eats in her new food truck. Best part: The meals-on-wheels keep her in business during disruptive mall construction right across the street. Some of the Daysies parallels were more personal: Take four-time best restaurant winner Hen of the Wood. In addition to turning out nationally recognized locavore cuisine, the
restaurant has become a training ground for some of the state’s most talented and ambitious chefs. Hen’s Stowe venture, Doc Ponds, scored a Daysie this year for its elevated après-ski lunches. Allison Gibson, co-owner of Honey Road (best new restaurant), also hails from Hen — as does Andrew LeStourgeon, chef-owner of Monarch & the Milkweed (best place to get a CBD edible). Despite their close proximity, we doubt any of these fine cooks considers the others competition. As Hen’s Daysie-winning chef Jordan Ware told Seven Days last year, he views his restaurant’s success as a chance to put the whole area on the map as a dining destination. That spirit of working together for the greater good makes Vermont more delicious. From sourcing produce through Burlington Farmers Market vendors to parking side by side at ArtsRiot’s Truck Stop, chefs here collaborate to make the food scene filling — and fulfilling — for all.

Honey Road
Masterful eastern Mediterranean mezze garnered the restaurant two James Beard Award nominations in its first year. Plates include baba ghanoush, braised lamb, grilled octopus and harissa-glazed chicken wings. (156 Church St., Burlington, 497-2145 • honeyroadrestaurant.com)

BEST BURGER OUTSIDE CHITTENDEN COUNTY
WORTHY BURGER Worthy Burger serves up specialty beef patties topped with bacon and smoked Gouda, and ground turkey ones with Korean-style barbecue sauce and kimchi. But the South Royalton restaurant built its reputation on a mix-and-match ordering format that allowed diners to pick a protein and add cheeses, veggies and sauces to their heart’s content, and that option is still available. So when you’re inevitably hit with a craving for a juicy poultry patty with Nordic-style Swiss cheese, habañero-pickled pineapple, caramelized onions and Asian pear slaw, you know where to go. (And this summer brings a Waitsfield location, too!) Don’t forget about the beer list — one of Vermont’s finest — and the beef-tallow fries. They alone are worth the trip.

THE SPOT ON THE DOCK Queen City residents have long lamented the shortage of true waterfront dining locales. Most “lakefront” eateries are at least a few minutes’ walk from the water’s edge, with views interrupted by buildings or trees. Enter the Spot on the Dock, which last summer took over the former Breakwater Café & Grill location at the King Street Dock and transformed it into a beach-house-style paradise with teak boardwalk floors, low-slung couches, tilted umbrellas and a bar scene — with great tropical cocktails — that’s so lively it borders on raucous on weekend nights. Oh, and the fresh Cobb salads, salmon poke and pork potstickers are worth a visit, too. 1 King St., Burlington, 540-0480 • spotonthedock.com

BEST GELATO/ BEST FOOD CART
SHY GUY GELATO Vermonters aren’t shy about their love of Shy Guy Gelato, an Italian-inspired gelateria with a local twist. Cofounder Paul Sansone (pictured) spent time perfecting his gelatomaking technique in Italy, but he and partner Tim Elliott take their flavor inspiration from the Green Mountain State, developing daily menus based on customer suggestions and farmers market fruits. The Shy Guys first dipped into the ice cream business in 2014; now their kiddie-cup-size Burlington empire includes a cheery blue St. Paul Street storefront and a Church Street cart. If a cup of dark chocolate sorbet, fior di latte, creamy plum or lemongrass Thai basil isn’t enough, not to worry: Shy Guy packs pints to take home. 457 St. Paul St., Burlington, 518-951-0442 • shyguygelato.com

BEST TACO OUTSIDE CHITTENDEN COUNTY
THE MAD TACO Any nonnative Vermonter will tell you that when it comes to good, authentic-style Mexican food, the Green Mountains are no destination. But that broad view overlooks the mad-good eats at the Mad Taco. Co-owners Joey Nagy and Wes Hamilton stuff tortillas with everything from smoked pork shoulder to fried fish to achiote chicken, then top them with salsa verde or kimchi. And it’s all done while keeping food miles to a minimum: Much of the meat and veggies sold across all three locations (including a brand-new Chittenden County spot at the Essex Shoppes & Cinema) hails from Nagy’s 300-acre farm in Fayston. In Middlebury’s historic Marble Works district, Noonie’s serves some of the best and biggest sandwiches around. All of the stackers are made with house-baked bread. (137 Maple St., Middlebury, 388-0014 • nooniesdeli.com)
In its first year in business, Honey Road garnered two James Beard Award nominations — one for best new restaurant in the Northeast and one for the region’s best chef. And that elite culinary foundation isn’t the only one taking note of Cara Chigazola-Tobin and Allison Gibson’s Burlington eatery. The Church Street spot has drawn internationally recognized cookbook authors for special cookthe-book tasting suppers and plucked no fewer than six Daysies nominations from a field of hundreds of local restaurants. Why? The food, which includes elegant but unshowy Mediterranean mezze and sweet-and-savory wings glistening with harissa glaze, is that good. Also: The cheap buckets of Miller High Life are cold, cold, cold, and the service is professional but friendly. Pretty sweet for Honey’s freshman showing!

DRINK SEVEN DAYSIES 2018-19
JEFF DREW
20
Craft drinks of all kinds flow freely in Vermont: beers, wines, meads, juices, ciders, spirits, cocktails, coffees and kombuchas. Did we miss any? They’re all here, and now the challenge many beverage makers face is ensuring that everyone gets to sample these sought-after but often limited-edition liquids. To that end, this year saw several expansions in the state’s sipping scene. The Vermont Brewers Festival on Burlington’s waterfront hit the quartercentury mark last summer and celebrated by adding a Killington offshoot in March. It enabled even more hopheads to taste and toast our famous breweries, such as Prohibition Pig and Hill Farmstead Brewery. Speaking of, Hill was once again named RateBeer’s top brewery in the world last year, and its Edward American pale ale is the favorite among Vermonters.
That beer honors the man who once owned the brewery’s land. Inquiring minds want to know: Is there something in that well water? After years of steady growth — remember when it was just a tiny tasting room in Essex’s Fort Ethan Allen? — Citizen Cider was #excidered to open a fruit processing and storage facility on Burlington’s Flynn Avenue this spring. South Enders got a little applesauced welcoming it to the neighborhood at a lively block-party launch. And just up the street, Burlington’s Soda Plant is undergoing a retro-cool renovation that will bring a slew of bevvie businesses to the erstwhile soda factory. This includes Daysies winner Tomgirl Juice Co. and finalists Shacksbury and Brio Coffeeworks. So, drink up! Vermont has much more on tap.

When praising Three Penny Taproom’s draft list, we could start with the fact that it numbers nearly two dozen beers — that’s respectable by any standard. Then we could mention how it includes rare brews you won’t find nearly anywhere else. Taps here pretty much always flow with at least one beer from Greensboro’s renowned Hill Farmstead Brewery and White River Junction’s tiny River Roost Brewery — as well as with suds from out-of-state brewers who distribute precious few kegs to Vermont, such as Maine’s Oxbow Brewing and Michigan’s Bell’s Brewery. The selections are ever changing yet always on point, and as delicious as they are uncommon. What more could a beer nerd want? 108 Main St., Montpelier, 223-8277 • threepennytaproom.com

BEST CIDERY (NONALCOHOLIC)/ BEST DOUGHNUTS
COLD HOLLOW CIDER MILL Waterbury Center’s Cold Hollow Cider Mill is famous for its apple-cider doughnuts — Gourmet magazine once ranked them among the top four in the country. The warm, wafting smell of these buttery treats greets visitors to the mill’s front counter. If you’re wondering what makes these doughnuts so divine, head to the vintage 1920s apple press in the back to see where the cider starts. The mill began in 1974 when Eric and Francine Chittenden started selling cider to their friends from their farm at the base of northern Vermont’s Cold Hollow Mountains. Warm or cold, their cider recipe still delights tourists and locals alike, all these years later. 3600 Route 100, Waterbury Center, 800-327-7537 • coldhollow.com

BEST PLACE TO DRINK ALONE
THE ARCHIVES With apologies to “Cheers,” sometimes you want to go where nobody knows your name — or at least where you can have a cocktail or three in relative peace all by your lonesome. It might seem counterintuitive that a lively vintage arcade bar is Seven Days readers’ go-to spot. But while gaming can be a social activity, burning through a roll of quarters on classics like Ms. Pac-Man or NBA Jam is also a fine and time-honored way to zone out. Add a dynamite draft list and hypercreative cocktails, and the Archives single-handedly checks all the boxes for singletons. Ready player one, indeed. 191 College St., Burlington, 448-4333 • thearchivesbar.com

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT SEVEN DAYSIES 2018-19
JEFF DREW
28
Spring and summer in Vermont play out like one long open-air music festival. Autumn ushers in the performing arts season, and stages around the state light up with world-class theater, dance and storytelling. The cold months could be a good excuse to stay home and hibernate, but clubs near and far keep us coming out for karaoke, comedy and trivial pursuits. They say the show must go on. Whatever the weather, Vermont entertainers certainly take that directive to heart. So, who stars in this year’s A&E Daysies awards? The Starline Rhythm Boys, of course. Together, “Big Al” Lemery, Danny Coane and Billy Bratcher earned the title of Vermont’s favorite country group, thanks to their spirited vintage twang and tireless work
ethic — the band’s been busily gigging since 1998. Happy 20th, fellas! The Rusty Nail in Stowe has been around even longer — since 1969, to be exact. After a few rocky years of closing and reopening, the venue reinvented itself last fall with the addition of Tres Amigos restaurant. Live music and Mexican food have proved to be a winning combo platter: The stage nabbed a Daysie for best small live music hot spot. And there are plenty of breakout Daysies performances this year, thanks to the addition of 13 lucky categories. To trumpeter Ray Vega, rapper Jarv, cartoonist Alison Bechdel, comedy troupe Vermont Vaudeville and all the rest: Take a muchdeserved bow. * = New category in 2018

BEST COMEDY TROUPE
VERMONT VAUDEVILLE Buster Keaton, Bob Hope, and Abbott and Costello are among the big-time comics who got their start in vaudeville. The Green Mountain State has its own stars of the variety-show stage with Greensboro’s Vermont Vaudeville. Formed in 2009, this grassroots theater company presents an original show each spring and fall at the Hardwick Town House and embarks on occasional outings around the state. These gut-busting spectaculars have been known to touch on timely topics and include singing, dancing, juggling, storytelling, sword swallowing and plenty of local humor. Cofounders Rose Friedman, Justin Lander, and Maya and Brent McCoy are among the core cast members, along with a costumed character known simply as Gorilla. Anything goes!

Mitchell fronts Purple: A Tribute to Prince, for which he enlists some of the finest musical talent in the area as his backing band. Together, they bring to life sizzling renditions of the artist’s megahits, such as “Purple Rain,” “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Little Red Corvette.” Not only does Mitchell embody Prince’s onstage charisma, he’s got the pipes to back it up. churchstreetdjs.com/craigmitchell

KATE POND “It wasn’t my real choice to be a sculptor,” says Burlington artist Kate Pond in the pilot episode of Vermont PBS’ “The Frog Hollow Green Mountain Artisans.” “It’s something that I think just came naturally to me.” Raised in Vermont, Pond has followed her creative instincts to forge a career that now spans nearly five decades and multiple mediums, from monumental works of Corten steel to breezy, joyful art kites. Her longtime fascination with light, nature and the cosmos may be best embodied by what Pond has described as her “life’s work”: the World Sculpture Project. That initiative has brought sculptural sundials and accompanying time capsules to sites across the globe. If you’re ready to connect to time and space closer to home, head to Pond’s “Come Light, Visit Me” at Champlain College.

SHOPPING SEVEN DAYSIES 2017-18
Across the country, retail is under siege. While Americans may be buying more than ever before, they increasingly do so with a few clicks of the mouse — and our bricks-and-mortar businesses are taking the hit. We saw that battle play out close to home when longtime Daysies finalist Onion River Sports turned off its lights in Montpelier at the end of 2017, citing financial difficulties after 43 years in business. But the sad chapter turned into an unlikely success story: The community rallied, contributing to an Indiegogo campaign that allowed former employees to reopen the retail outlet as Onion River Outdoors a mere five months later. Needless to say, the rebranded biz made it to the Daysies finals for best outdoor outfitter — though it couldn’t quite top the votes for perennial winner Outdoor Gear Exchange. That Burlington biz had a banner year of its own, expanding into the former Panera Bread space on the Church Street Marketplace. Nothing like blowing national competition out of the water. Next time you’re looking to shop ’til you drop, consider doing so IRL. The Daysies faves that follow — from Salaam to Skirack, Ecco to Earl’s Cyclery & Fitness — have our backs covered. Let’s make sure we’ve got theirs.

BEST MEN’S SHOE STORE
LENNY’S SHOE & APPAREL Lenny’s official slogan is “We fit you right,” but it could just as easily be “Well-heeled and plenty of sole.” Since 1990, the family-owned and -operated stores in Williston, St. Albans, Barre and Plattsburgh, N.Y., have been go-to destinations for fellas’ footwear ranging from sandals to sneakers and slippers to muck boots. Then, in 2011, Lenny’s employees took to the streets of central Vermont and handed out free sweatshirts and pairs of Carhartt pants to flood victims of Tropical Storm Irene. Not surprisingly, they’ve been a Daysies “shoe-in” for best men’s shoe store for four years running. Living in Vermont ain’t always easy. Ever searched for cell service in Strafford? Bid on a home in Burlington? Sacrificed six months of the year to a single season: winter? But Vermonters take perverse pride in toughing it out — and know that the benefits far outweigh the bothers of living here. Besides, when the going gets rough, they know who to call. Consider this section of the Daysies your yellow pages to the state’s outstanding professional services. When you do decide to buy that house in Burlington, you can seek out the experts: real estate agent Jessica Bridge, mortgage broker New England Federal Credit Union and moving company Grunts Move Junk, for example. And when you settle into your home and inevitably adopt a puppy — Vermont is the top pet-owning state in America — you can head to the Humane Society of Chittenden County, followed in quick succession by the Green Mountain Animal Hospital and Doggie Styles Salon. Whatever you need — your tires changed or that old suit tailored; a Laundromat or five-star lodging — the businesses that follow will treat you right.

Too often, going to the gym means sweating it out in front of mirrors under fluorescent lighting — and that’s not exactly everyone’s idea of a good time. The spinning masters at REV Indoor Cycling have the solution: dark classrooms, no mirrors and upbeat music for a workout on a weighted indoor bike. The combo makes for empowering exercise that is both incredibly sweaty and incredibly fun. In the words of founder Sarah DeGray, “I no longer exercise to punish myself, I exercise because I love myself. I find daily inspiration in the heart and hard work of all who REV.” Hop on and see where this set of wheels takes you. 10 Farrell St., South Burlington, 497-2737 • revindoor.com

Haskell, who has years of experience as a dog trainer and American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen evaluator, eschews choke chains, shock collars, whips, rolled-up newspapers and other “corrective” training tools. Instead, she and fellow trainer Cassie Lamothe use only positive reinforcement techniques to convince your canine to comply with commands. Whether you’re prepping your pooch for international agility competitions or just trying to get your Pekingese to stop pooping on your Persian rug, the kind folks at Show Me the Biscuit can walk you through the process. “Follow the locals.” It’s the ultimate travel commandment, and it appears that Vermont’s nearly 13 million annual tourists are heeding the wisdom. Every year, visitors from around the world head here to ski down our slopes, hike up our mountains, swim in our lakes and check out our recreational attractions. In other words, they’re doing as we do. That’s because Vermont’s great outdoors are hard for anyone to resist. Whether we’re milking Brown Swiss cows at Shelburne Farms, spinning our wheels along the Burlington Bike Path or angling for fish at Lake Willoughby, Mother Nature is always calling. And you gotta pick up when Mom calls. It can be tough choosing favorites in this Daysies section: Isn’t there room in our lives for more than one lake? You bet. So start with the fantastic winners presented here, then work your way through the finalists, too. From sailing tours to science museums, trampoline parks to teddy-bear factories, you’ll broaden your horizons and have one helluva bucket list.

TRAPP FAMILY LODGE At the famed Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, the hills are alive with the sound of music, sure — but also with the huffing and puffing of healthy folks getting in some serious cardio. The luxury mountain getaway’s 2,500 scenic acres include 28 miles of groomed crosscountry skiing trails and 62 miles of ungroomed trails. The resort’s ski center, which opened in 1968, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year — in addition to its ninth consecutive Daysies award. After a good day on the trails, we suggest toasting with Austrian-style lagers at the von Trapp Brewing Bierhall Restaurant. 700 Trapp Hill Rd., Stowe • 253-8511 • trappfamily.com

BEST DAY HIKE
CAMEL’S HUMP We’re not exactly sure what Ira Allen was drinking — er, thinking — when he coined the term “Camel’s Rump” in reference to Vermont’s most distinctive peak in 1798. And, frankly, even the more sanitized Camel’s Hump, as the mountain became known in 1830, makes us question whether Allen had ever actually seen a camel. Though it really doesn’t resemble a camel, like, at all, the highest undeveloped Green Mountain peak — and third tallest mountain in the state overall — is among Vermont’s natural treasures. From the popular Huntington side, you can hike to the top and back by lunch. More adventurous climbers can take the longer, steeper route on the Duxbury side. 879-6565 • vtstateparks.com
BEST PLACE TO BIKE

BEST INDOOR CHILDREN’S PLAY SPACE
ECHO LEAHY CENTER FOR LAKE CHAMPLAIN Parents: When you visit public places with your child, do you find yourself repeating the phrase “Don’t touch that!” ad nauseam? At the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in Burlington, kiddos are free to get hands-on with interactive exhibits focused on fostering appreciation for the natural environment. Little tykes learn about science using open-ended play scenarios in Champ Lane; teens and adults shape watersheds using an augmented-reality sandbox in the Action Lab; and folks of all ages can view more than 70 species of fish, reptiles and amphibians, and catch educational flicks in the Northfield Savings Bank 3D Theater. More than 100 exhibits, some rotating, make for a fresh experience every visit. 1 College St., Burlington • 864-1848 • echovermont.org
