ummertime visitors to Burlington inevitably turn their eyes to Lake Champlain. Its sparkling waters invite all kinds of aquatic activity and reflect — to stunning effect — candy-colored sunsets. But these deep-blue waves also hold both history and mystery. Looking to dive into their depths? Head to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (lcmm.org). The word “museum” hardly does justice to this hidden gem in Vergennes, less than an hour south of Burlington. From late May to mid-October, it offers dynamic exhibits, classes and activities dedicated to preserving and teaching the history of Lake Champlain and the people and vessels that have plied its waters for centuries.

A visitor could spend hours perusing the fascinating nauticalthemed installations contained in more than a dozen buildings scattered across the museum grounds. Most pay tribute to the modes of travel that have been used on Lake Champlain, from Abenaki Indian canoes and horse-powered ferries to 19th-century steamboats and a 35-foot ice yacht dubbed the Storm King. Built in 1902, the yacht was the fastest form of human transportation in its day, capable of speeds of 120 miles per hour. “The Key to Liberty: The Revolutionary War in the Champlain Valley” exhibit is a must-see for visitors interested in the American Revolution and the decisive naval battles that were fought on Lake Champlain. This permanent display features eyewitness accounts of the 1776 Battle of Valcour Island, including a nine-foot scale model of the gunboat Philadelphia that was sunk by the British Royal Navy — and later raised in 1935 and transported to a Smithsonian museum. The exhibit reflects research that’s under way at the museum all year round. On-site archeologists and researchers are constantly discovering new artifacts to add — such as the cannon that exploded aboard the gunboat New York in 1776. Indeed, Lake Champlain has one of the richest and most unique nautical histories of any body of water in North America. It’s home to more than 300 shipwrecks dating back to the French and Indian War of the mid-18th century, and new wrecks are still being discovered. Because the museum is contracted with the State of Vermont to maintain and oversee these underwater cultural resources, it opens its conservation lab to visitors, allow-

Le musée regroupe plus d’une dizaine d’immeubles, qui recèlent de fascinantes installations nautiques, dont la plupart illustrent les moyens de transport utilisés sur le lac Champlain au fil du temps : canots abénakis, traversiers d’époque, bateaux à vapeur du 19e siècle et un voilier de glace de 10 mètres nommé Storm King. Ce dernier, construit en 1902, pouvait atteindre une vitesse de près de 200 km/ heure – le moyen de transport humain le plus rapide de l’époque. Les visiteurs intéressés par la Révolution américaine et les batailles navales décisives livrées sur le lac Champlain ne doivent surtout pas rater l’exposition permanente The Key to Liberty: The Revolutionary War in the Champlain Valley. Vous pourrez consulter des récits de témoins de la bataille de 1776 à l’île Valcour et admirer un modèle réduit de 2,75 m de la chaloupe canonnière Philadelphia coulée par la Marine royale britannique et ramenée à la surface en 1935, puis transportée à un musée Smithsonian. Cette exposition illustre bien le travail de recherche du musée. Sur place, des archéologues et des chercheurs découvrent constamment de nouveaux artéfacts, comme un canon qui a explosé à bord de la chaloupe canonnière New York en 1776. Le lac Champlain a une histoire navale parmi les plus riches et uniques en Amérique du Nord. Deux importantes expositions sur les naufrages du General Butler et de l’O.J. Walker ont inspiré la construction de la goélette Lois McClure. Conçu à l’origine pour rester amarré au port de Burlington, le Lois McClure s’est avéré un outil de promotion du musée si efficace qu’il effectue dorénavant des excursions jusqu’à Long Island (New York) et à Québec. ing them to witness how artifacts are restored and preserved. Two wreck exhibits that are prominently featured, the General Butler and O.J. Walker, later became the inspiration for building a replica schooner, the Lois McClure. Originally intended as a permanently moored exhibit on Burlington’s waterfront, the Lois McClure was such a successful outreach tool for the museum that it now takes regular excursions as far as Long Island, N.Y., and Québec City. On July 4th weekend, the schooner begins a two-month journey to Buffalo, N.Y., to mark the bicentennial of the Erie Canal construction.

All Hands on Deck

Central to the museum’s mission is keeping alive traditional nautical skills through workshops, classes and trips on the water. About twice a month, the museum operates a 50-passenger vessel called the Escape. Visitors can climb aboard and — without ever donning a scuba suit — explore wrecks along the lake bottom via a live video feed from a remotely operated underwater vehicle. Says museum codirector Joyce Cameron, “You see it really clearly on a big screen, all with a cocktail in hand.” Throughout the summer, visitors can also choose from an à la carte menu of classes. These include daily demonstrations and instruction in traditional glassblowing — once used for making navigational lights, lighthouse lenses, deck lights and prisms. The museum is also home to one of New England’s largest blacksmith shops. About 10 years ago, while building the replica of the gunship Philadelphia, the museum built an 18th-century-style forge. That exhibit proved so popular that, in 2008, a new forge was opened for teaching blacksmithing, metalworking and bronze casting. Visitors can also check out one of the museum’s fleet of 18 rowing gigs, which are available daily for hourlong self-guided trips on the lake, weather permitting. (Register in advance to complete the necessary training and safety check.) Sound like too much to experience in just one day? Museum codirector Erick Tichonuk remembers walking the grounds last summer when he asked a visitor what he thought of the place. “He said, ‘I’m pissed!’ So I asked him what’s wrong,” Tichonuk recalled. “He said, ‘I read somewhere that I should allow two hours at the museum — and I’ve spent two hours in just the first two buildings!’” Not a problem, Tichonuk reassured his guest. A day pass is good for a return visit the following day.

On the Waterfront The museum takes part in the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival July 27 to 30 in Burlington’s Waterfront Park, showcasing classic longboats, canoes, kayaks and dragon-boat demonstrations that commemorate the past, present and future of Lake Champlain. Environ deux fois par mois, le musée invite une cinquantaine de personnes à monter à bord de l’Escape. Les passagers peuvent admirer les épaves sans équipement de plongée : on leur présente des images filmées en direct par un véhicule sous-marin télécommandé. « On voit tout très bien sur grand écran, un cocktail à la main, indique Joyce Cameron, codirectrice du musée. » Pendant l’été, plusieurs cours sont offerts aux visiteurs, notamment des démonstrations quotidiennes de soufflage du verre, utilisé autrefois pour fabriquer des feux de navigation, des lentilles de phares à signaux, des verres de pont et des prismes. Le musée abrite également l’un des plus grands ateliers de forgeron de Nouvelle-Angleterre. Il y a environ 10 ans, pendant la construction de la réplique de la chaloupe canonnière Philadelphia, le musée a reproduit une forge du 18e siècle. L’exposition a connu une telle popularité qu’en 2008, une nouvelle forge a ouvert ses portes, destinée à l’enseignement de l’ouvrage de forge, du travail des métaux et du moulage en bronze. Le musée met aussi à la disposition des visiteurs sa flotte de 18 gigues à rames pour des excursions autonomes d’une heure sur le lac, lorsque le temps le permet. (Inscrivez-vous à l’avance pour suivre la formation nécessaire et effectuer les contrôles de sécurité.) Un programme chargé, vous dites? Erick Tichonuk, codirecteur du musée, a demandé à un visiteur son avis sur les lieux, l’été dernier. « Il m’a dit qu’il était très mécontent, se souvient-il. Je lui ai demandé pourquoi et il m’a répondu qu’il avait lu quelque part de prévoir deux heures pour la visite du musée – or, il avait passé deux heures juste dans les deux premiers édifices! » Erick a rappelé au client que les billets d’entrée sont valides deux jours de suite.

Du 27 au 30 juillet, le parc Waterfront de Burlington accueille chaloupes traditionnelles, canots, kayaks et démonstrations de bateau-dragon pour célébrer le passé, le présent et le futur du lac Champlain. Durant cette période de grande industrie, et au cours des 100 années qui allaient suivre, l’extrémité du lac a été comblée, puis aménagée. Ce nouveau secteur riverain bourdonnait d’activité. n the mid-19th century, the waters of Lake Champlain lapped much farther east than they do today — right up to the edge of Burlington’s Battery Street, which was then called Lake Street. At the time, Burlington was the country’s third-largest lumber port. During that period of high industry, and over the next 100 years, the edge of the lake was filled in and developed. The newly created waterfront was a bustling hub of activity. Workers lived in tenements and house boats, and the area was jam-packed with the businesses and infrastructure necessary to feed hungry laborers. That makes the waterfront an apropos meeting spot for Burlington Edible History tours. Running three times a week from mid-June to mid-October, these walks are led by guides including tour cofounders Gail Rosenberg and Elise Guyette — both writers and historians who are past presidents of the Chittenden County Historical Society. Their hair blowing in the breeze, the women wait for tour attendees to gather behind the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain.

Inside, the freshwater aquarium and science center offers an array of exhibits about the history and ecology of the lake — as well as tanks filled with mostly native fish, reptiles and amphibians. The tour begins, and for the next three hours and 15 minutes, participants stroll the city, learning fascinating tidbits about days gone by. For instance, a tunnel underneath Maple Street used a rolling conveyer belt to move huge blocks of ice from the lake to the nearby icehouse. And, during the Great Depression, grocers would trade food for paper IOUs instead of money and then tear up the IOUs so that impoverished customers wouldn’t have to pay. A laminated book of historical photographs brings each story alive: Here is a picture of corn and squash grown by the Abenaki tribe; there is a picture of a German sausage maker who was missing three fingers. Burlington landmarks dot the pages. Although many participants in Burlington’s famed Vermont City Marathon complete the 26.2-mile race in less than three hours, those who are on the Burlington Edible History tour only cover about two miles. That is, in part, because they get to stop and snack. First, there’s a fresh salad in the Waterside Café at ECHO — harking back to the time when farm-to-table was a way of

Then comes a slice of French Canadian meat pie at Penny Cluse Café, which has long reigned as the city’s hottest brunch spot, and a nibble at the elegant Hotel Vermont’s Juniper restaurant. At each of the stops — which together make up a meal — bite-size stories link the food to local history. Part of the fun, say Rosenberg and Guyette, is that the tour is different every day, depending on each guide’s passions and the group’s interests. On rainy days, more time is spent inside, gathered around tables. Sunshine and blue skies, on the other hand, keep the tours mainly outdoors. Burlington Edible History walks are well suited for out-of-towners looking for a fun and engaging way to learn more about the place they’re visiting. But even those who live or work in Burlington can pick up something new. That building you walk by on your way to work? It might have been the city’s first Chinese restaurant. Your friend’s backyard? It might have been a Lebanese family’s subsistence garden. And the tours serve as a good reminder that when we head to a swinging bench by the bike path, visit the boathouse for a sunset cocktail, or stop in at ECHO to check out the starfish and turtles in its tanks, the ground we’re walking on used to be water.

Baseball is America’s favorite pastime, and it’s easy to see why at a Vermont Lake Monsters game. Home games are held at historic Centennial Field — opened in 1906, it’s the oldest active ballpark in the country. These days, the small stadium draws nearly 100,000 fans each summer to watch the state’s minor-league baseball team go to bat. Champlain Valley Fair _ IN SEASON • EN SAISON + Summer, like all good things, must come to an end. But it goes out with a bang at the Champlain Valley Fair, held in nearby Essex Junction. The 10-day festival is a mix of cotton-candy fun, carny curiosities and agricultural amusements. From the Ferris wheel to the 4-H shows to the fried dough, the state’s largest fair draws in folks by the thousands. urlington City Arts curates art exhibits in three areas of the airport: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1 through 8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to look around! In June, the Skyway features Jim Westphalen’s photographic narratives about the decay of rural America’s built landscape. Mareva Millarc’s bold abstract paintings, allowing for personal interpretation and blurred realities, are on view in the Gates. And Charlie Bluett’s contemporary colorfield paintings, evoking “America’s vast and varied environments,” appear by the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! Starting in July, the “Faces of the Family Room” exhibit appears in the Skyway. In it, Steve Mann’s portraits celebrate the diverse families who make use of the programs at Burlington’s Janet S. Munt Family Room. Greg Danford’s landscape photography appears in the Gates, providing a peek into his decades of world travel. (“I have always believed that the best investment you can make in your photography is plane tickets,” he writes.) Finally, Mary Hill’s abstract paintings and textile designs — which she calls “an adventure into the unknown” — are mounted by the escalator. All of these artists live or have spent time in Vermont. itting in the cab of a 60-ton “super-sweeper” snowplow nicknamed Tango Six, Gerry Carey recalled the day he was hired at Burlington International Airport 41 years ago. A friend on his softball team told him about a job on the airfield grounds crew and arranged for Carey to meet with a manager. “I came in Monday morning,” Carey remembered. “He said, ‘When can you start?’” Carey bid farewell to his construction job and started at GERRY CAREY BTV that very day. He’s plowed mountains of snow — more than 100 inches some winters — and, in the summer, mowed hundreds of acres of grass. In between those tasks, Carey builds cabinets, counters, signs and more for the terminal, and helps with airport remodeling projects. The airport has grown over Carey’s tenure; he remembers the time before Jetways, when arriving passengers always had to disembark down a stairway onto the tarmac. And before the parking garage was built, the airport lot would fill up — cars would have to park on the side of the airfield. “We’d run out of space, especially around Thanksgiving,” Carey recalled. His work ethic is legendary. No one on the 12-person grounds crew has more endurance in a snowplow or more determination to tackle almost any job, said Matt Harding, airport facilities foreman: “He always opts for the harder job. You got a choice of painting the walls or breaking concrete, he’ll do the concrete — and he’s running circles around some of these young guys.” BTV gave Carey an informal exit interview in advance of his upcoming retirement.

Un ami de son équipe de balle molle lui avait parlé d’un emploi dans l’équipe au sol du terrain d’aviation et avait organisé un entretien avec un directeur. « Le lundi matin où je suis arrivé, se souvient Gerry, il m’a demandé quand je pouvais commencer. » C’est ce jour-là que Gerry a abandonné son emploi dans le domaine de la construction et qu’il a commencé à travailler à BTV. C’était le début de sa carrière d’opérateur d’équipement lourd et de menuisier au plus important aéroport du Vermont. Pendant 40 ans, les habitants de Burlington en ont vu des avions atterrir et décoller sur la piste principale. Durant cette période, Gerry, lui, a enlevé beaucoup de neige – plus de 2,5 m certains hivers – et l’été, il a en tondu, du gazon! Il a aussi construit des classeurs, des comptoirs et des panneaux destinés au terminal, et a participé à des projets de rénovation de l’aéroport. L’aéroport a évolué depuis l’arrivée de Gerry. Il se souvient d’une époque, avant Jetways, où les passagers à l’arrivée devaient descendre un escalier dans l’aire de trafic. Et avant la construction du garage, lorsque le stationnement de l’aéroport se remplissait, il fallait garer les voitures le long du terrain d’aviation. « On manquait de place, se rappelle Gerry, surtout vers la fin de semaine de l’Action de grâces. » L’éthique professionnelle de Gerry est connue de tous. Personne au sein de son équipe de 12 membres n’a plus d’endurance que lui aux commandes du chasse-neige ou plus de détermination à relever presque n’importe quel défi. Voici ce que Matt Harding, contremaître des installations aéroportuaires, a à dire sur Gerry : « Il choisit toujours la tâche la plus dure. Entre peindre un mur et percer le béton, il opte pour le béton – et il en sait souvent beaucoup plus que les jeunes sur le sujet. » BTV a eu un entretien de départ informel avec Gerry, qui compte partir à la retraite plus tard cette année.

Quel conseil donneriez-vous aux jeunes qui commencent leur carrière? Faites toujours ce que vous avez à faire de votre mieux et si vous n’aimez pas votre travail, démissionnez et faites autre chose.

You plan to retire later this year. What’s your advice to young people starting their careers? Whatever you do, give it 100 percent. Do your job. If you don’t like your job, get out of it. Do something else.

À presque 70 ans, vous pouvez toujours soulever un sac de 35 kg de ciment. Quel est votre secret? Je me tiens en forme, tout simplement. Je n’ai pas vraiment de problème de santé, sauf quelques douleurs à droite à gauche. J’ai ralenti le rythme, mais pas trop. À la maison aussi je me tiens physiquement occupé.

You’re almost 70, but you can still carry an 80-pound bag of cement. How do you do it? I just always kept in shape, I believe. I don’t have any real physical problems besides a few aches and pains. I’ve slowed down a little bit, but not that much. I don’t sit around at home when I’m home. I do a lot of physical work.

Vous travaillez de 7 à 15 h et revenez parfois pour un quart de nuit lorsqu’il y a une forte tempête. Comment refaitesvous le plein? Déneiger me procure un sentiment de satisfaction, de travail accompli. Durant une tempête, il faut aller moins vite qu’un jour où il fait beau, et on s’assure que tout le monde reste en contact. Il fait bon voir la piste dégagée et sèche, pour assurer la sécurité des atterrissages.

You work 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and sometimes come back for overnight shifts in big storms. How do you power through? I love to plow snow. It’s just getting it done. You have to slow down. You can’t go as fast as you would on a clear day. You take your time and make sure everybody is on the radio, in contact. It’s a good feeling to see the runway bare and dry, so people will have the safe landing.

Quel type de précipitations est le plus difficile à gérer? La pluie verglaçante, qui nous oblige à répandre un produit chimique et à utiliser les grattes et les balayeuses inférieures; on doit ensuite attendre un peu. La neige ne pose pas vraiment de problème, pas comme la glace ou la neige très mouillée.

What’s the toughest kind of precipitation to deal with? Freezing rain, where we have to put down a chemical and use the underbody scrapers and sweepers, then let it sit for a while. Snow is not really a problem. It’s the ice and the slush.

Vous avez assisté à quelques accidents, dont ce Boeing 727 qui a échoué dans un banc de neige dans les années 1980. Personne n’a été blessé, mais ça n’a pas dû être facile de le sortir de là! Nous avons environ deux heures à le retourner. L’avion n’a pas été endommagé et il a finalement pu repartir. Le pilote est arrivé trop vite sur la voie de circulation; il y a un virage prononcé à la fin. Il n’a pas ralenti, l’avion a glissé, raté le virage et terminé sa course dans le banc de neige. Nous avons déneigé autour de l’appareil et un remorqueur l’a tiré de là.

You’ve seen a few mishaps. Tell me about the 727 that slid into a snowbank back in the 1980s. No one was hurt, but it must have been quite the job to get it out. It took maybe two hours to get it turned around. There was no damage; it eventually did fly out. It was too fast on the taxiway — there’s a sharp turn at the end. [The pilot] didn’t slow down. He just slid on the ice and didn’t make the turn and went off the taxiway. We plowed around it, and then they had to use a tug to pull it out.

Avez-vous vu des personnes célèbres au fil des ans? Ray Charles, Art Garfunkel, Céline Dion, à qui j’ai demandé un autographe, Lucille Ball, Ronald Reagan. J’ai discuté avec Ray Charles; ma belle-mère était à l’aéroport ce jour-là. Elle lui a dit qu’elle était heureuse de le voir et il lui a répondu que lui aussi, ce qui est assez drôle étant donné qu’il était aveugle.

What’s your favorite plane? I like to watch the F-16s come in from the [Vermont Air National Guard] — that’s my favorite. I’m kind of anxious to see the F-35s when they come in. I like the Air Guard planes. Why? Because they are fast, and they are exciting to watch.

Quel est votre avion préféré? J’aime regarder les F-16 qui arrivent de la Garde nationale aérienne du Vermont, ce sont mes préférés. Les F-35, aussi. En fait, j’aime bien les avions de la Garde aérienne. Ils sont rapides et offrent un spectacle captivant.

Did you ever imagine when you were young that you would do one job for 41 years? No, I didn’t. But it turned out to be a great job, and it’s going to be really hard for me to retire.

L’auriez-vous cru, lorsque vous étiez plus jeune, que vous occuperiez le même emploi durant 41 ans? Non, mais j’aime beaucoup mon travail et je redoute le moment de partir à la retraite.
